Senegal is located in the western part of the Africa continent. It is limited in the West by the Atlantic Ocean, in the North by Mauritania, in the East by Mali and in the South by bissau Guinea and the Republic of Guinea. Its southern region of Casamance shares a border with the Republic of The Gambia.

Senegal has the required assets for a blooming tourism industry. It is only five hours away from Western Europe and about seven hours away from the East Coast of the United States. Besides it is a sunny country claiming more than 3000 hours of sunshine yearly. All forms of tourism can be experienced in Senegal seaside resorts (leisure, aquatic sports, horseback riding, discovery and more), cultural tourism, bird watching, sport tourism (hunting, scuba diving), ecotourism, historic museums, gorgeous natural sites, six major game parks and reserves, diversified fauna and flora to name a few.

Despite various influences (Western influence due to a long French presence in West Africa, Middle Eastern influence due to a tradition of multiple exchanges with North Africa and Arab Countries), Senegal has its own brand of exotic music, food and customs that gives it the right dash of spice.

Its weather is tropical, hot and humid: the rainy season (May to November) can sometimes bring in some strong southeast winds. The dry season (Decmber to April) is dominated by hot, dry, humid and harmattan winds. Senegal is home to some of the most photographed beaches in the world. The reefs and cays of the coast are heaven for divers, holding out the promise of such extraordinary sightings of the underworld.

Dakar, the melting pot capital city, is one of the busiest cruise ship ports in Africa and boasts an exciting restaurant and club scene, as well as duty-free shopping.

Politically, Senegal is a republic with a presidency; the president is elected every five years as of 2001, previously being seven years, by adult votes. The current president is Macky Sall, elected in March 2012.

your trust あなたを信頼し

T

rust is one of the main fields that determines the limits of human beings, it is essential for our psychological stability. We all need to trust someone otherwise we would cut off from the outside world, keeping secret our worries, concerns and feelings. We would end up not being able to express ourselves and share with others. We would worry too much and the state of incomprehension thus created would freeze our hearts in an endless wave of loneliness.

Trust is a required factor to keep harmonious relationship alive with social acquaintances or family siblings. This feeling is sometimes difficult to channel even if it’s very deep. It allows us to share affection, love, hope, joy and sorrow, concerns and projects, desires and feelings.

Trust encourages exchange of confidences. It is an indispensable link between people who meet each other. It is even more tangible in social and professional life as for business relationships or simply with neighbours. If there is one field in which trust is fundamental, it’s concerning family: between husband and wife, between parent and child. Each other and must be able to communicate without fear. It means true love. In today’s world, it’s getting more and more difficult to trust people in general. One’s interests are put first to the detriment of others.

A striking example, the case of Japanese people; from my perspective as a foreigner, I am always amazed by the trust they give to each other. An excellent barometer of trust would be to analyse behaviour between people of foreign origins whose different cultures may influence their relationships. If some exceptions are felt transcending all cultural barriers, it means that trust rules.

The gamble paid off!

In Japan, being a foreigner fluent in Japanese, sometimes the presence of a Japanese is needed to solve a problem. For example, if a foreigner has got an appointment with Japanese people to talk about business or more simply to rent a house, it is more likely to get the trust of his Japanese interlocutor if another Japanese person is present than going alone or with another foreigner. It’s not racism! It’s just a matter of trust, but sometimes it is misunderstood and often misinterpreted by us foreigners in Japan.

But sadly, the situation is different when it comes to negotiations between Africans. We are in Japan: “An African has got an appointment with another African concerning business. It is more likely to gain the trust of his African interlocutor if he comes with a Japanese or a non-African person”. It is not racism from the interlocutor but rather a complex and a lack of confidence.

(Why him and not me?) It is pure and simple jealousy, often misunderstood by non-Africans, who sometimes claim to anyone who want to listen that “African people don’t like working together”…

This criticism is not only addressed to Africans in Africa, but also to Africans in the Diaspora: here in Asia, Europe, United States, Caribbean etc. ...

Why do Africans do not trust each other?

The fragility of this act (Trust) is not the only reason, is this a specific African harm? We are claiming every day that Africa must unite, but how can we manage this African Union if we don’t trust each other? What if the Diaspora (Farafina) would be taken as an example? After all, the new president of Senegal has just promoted the musician Yousou Ndour as Minister of Culture and Tourism! In that case, it’s not only a matter of trust ...

頼は人間の限界を決定づける主な分野の1つです。 そしてそれは精神の安定にとって極 めて重要です。私たちは皆誰かを信頼しなくてはなりません。 さもなければ私たちは心配 事、不安や感情を隠し、外部の世界から切り離されてしまうでしょう。 自分自身を表現する ことなく、他人と分かち合うこともなく終わってしまうでしょう。私たちは心配しすぎてしまう でしょうし、理解できない状態は終わりのない寂しさの波の中で私たちの心を凍らせるでしょう。 信頼は知人や家族との友好関係を保つのに必要な要因です。信頼により愛情、希望、楽しみ、悲しみ、心 配事、計画、欲望など感情を分け合うことができます。信頼によって、互いに秘密を打ち明けさせたりもし ます。 それは出会う人々の間の不可欠な絆です。 それは仕事上の関係や単にご近所との社会的、職業的 な生活においてはもっと具体的でさえあります。 もし信頼が欠かせない1つの分野があるとしたら、それは夫と妻、親と子など、家族です。 それぞれが恐れ ることなしにコミュニケーションできなければなりません。 それが真実の愛を意味します。現代の世界で は、一般的に人々を信頼するのがどんどん難しくなってきています。他人に迷惑をかけてまで自分の興味 を第一に置くのです。

顕著な例、 日本人の場合：外国人の私にとって、いつも日本人のお互いに対する信頼にびっくりさせられ ます。異なる文化により、関係に影響を及ぼす可能性のある外国の人々との間での行動を分析すること が信頼についての完璧なバロメーターになるでしょう。 もし文化的な壁を乗り越えるいくつかの例外が感 じられたら、それは信頼が勝ったということになります。賭けは成功です！ 日本において、 日本語が堪能な外国人でも時々問題を解決するのに日本人の存在が必要なことがありま す。例えば、 もし外国人が日本人とビジネスの話をするのに、 もしくは単純に家を借りるのに約束をしてい たとして、一人もしくは他の外国人と行くよりも、 日本人と一緒に行くと信頼を得やすい傾向にあります。 これは人種差別ではありません！これは単に信頼の問題なのです。 しかしこれはよく私たち日本にいる外 国人により誤解されます。 しかし悲しいことにこれがアフリカ人同士の交渉となると状況が変わって来ます。私たちは日本にいま す：”あるアフリカ人が他のアフリカ人とビジネスについての約束をしました。 そして日本人やアフリカ人 以外の人と一緒に行くと相手の信頼を得やすいのです。” これは人種差別ではありません。むしろコンプレックスと自信の無さによるものです。 （なぜ彼で私ではな いのでしょう？） これは純粋で単純なジェラシーです。”アフリカ人はアフリカ人同士一緒に働きたがらな い”とアフリカ人ではない人々にしばしば誤解されています...この批判はアフリカに住むアフリカ人だけ に向けられたものではなく、離散したアジア、 ヨーロッパ、 アメリカ、 カリブなどのアフリカ人にも向けられ ているのです。 なぜアフリカ人はお互いを信頼しないのでしょうか？ この行動（信頼）の壊れやすさだけが理由ではありません。 これはアフリカ特有の悪影響なのでしょうか？ 私たちは毎日、 アフリカは団結しなければならないと主張しています。 しかし、 もしお互いを信頼できな いのであればどうやってアフリカを団結していけるのでしょうか？セネガルの新大統領はミュージシャン のユッス・ンドゥールを文化観光大臣にしました！この場合、単なる信頼の問題ではないですが...

in Kanamura Although April showers are annoying, one day you will open the window of your house, and a subtle light, a gentle breeze and a pure blue sky will show you that spring has arrived. Each one has its own way to adapt to spring season which represents as well pollens, buds and reproduction. The person that you know best can transform himself into a stranger, wearing the famous white mask, dark glasses and a hat to fight against pollen since he is allergic to Mother Nature, but hopefully not to you. The new quiz game starts as usual: but who is this person? Do not make friends at that time; you may not be able to find them afterwards. Yet the sober colours of clothes and white masks will disappear after the start of one of the best shows in the world: sakura blooming. Gradually the cherry blossoms open, from pale pink to pure white, shimmering light. They penetrate the spectators senses, abandoned to the joy of watching an extreme beauty that hurts.

Parks around castles are full of sakura but the precious shinadare-sakura identified and classified in several books, is an ancient tree that causes major pilgrimages. This tree, similar to a weeping willow, is carried by a very high trunk, extending its branches over several meters of width; and do not let himself be easily captured by the camera.

Pollen, buds and reproduction! Except cherry blossoms, what do I see standing out on the horizon? On April 1st is celebrated the Kanamura matsuri in a Shinto temple in Kawasaki Kanayama. At the entrance of the temple, three carts -the famous mikoshis- are on hold. # 7 Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE 8

貴重なしだれ桜は古くからの木であり、 お参りする理由にもなっています。 シ

ダレヤナギに似たこの木はとても太い幹を持ち、 その枝を何メートルも広 げています。 その為カメラで撮るのは容易ではありません。

花粉、新芽、繁殖の季節！桜以外に、地平線上に何が際立っているのが見え

るでしょうか？4月1日、川崎の金山神社でかなまら祭が催されました。神社

の入り口には3つの有名な神輿が待っています。１年中隠されたままになっ

ているそれらがこの日そのベールをはがします：神輿には3つの大きな男

根像が立っています。 ピンクの物、金属でできている黒い物、 もっと古風な木 製の物があり、 この祭の歴史と伝統、 そして私たちの心を捉えるセックスの

ミステリーを際立たせます。 プロの写真家や観光客が見ている中、 この神

輿の行列は正午頃の予定です。 この儀式は不真面目な物ではありません。 午前10時に、祭壇への奉献の前に神主は聖なる火を灯します。人々は安

産、商売繁盛、夫婦和合、性病除けを願い、喜んで祝福を受けます。他の祭

壇の前では幼い子どもたちが着物を着て踊っています。彼らの歩みは遅く、

その動きは優雅です。神社の周りにはたくさんの屋台があり、 おみやげで溢 れ返っています。小さいまたは大きいペニスの形をしたキーホルダーやお

きていますね。私も欲しいです！”と人々が言っているのを聞いてもあなたは 驚かないでしょう。 その口調はとても自然で、 この様な発見をしたことを笑

い始めるでしょう。幸せ、 フレンドリーな笑い、良い気分は再現します。宗教 的に束縛されているわけではないのですから。

笑いは治療薬と言えます。性は日本では神聖な物です。 もし神輿が空を

飛ぶことができたら、 インドの大仏にぶつかり、 スーダンのハルツームの

Al-Kabirモスクの前に着陸し、パリのシャンゼリゼに向け再度離陸します。

そしてこれら3つの主要な宗教の女性たちはそれぞれの国でこの儀式を行

うことができるのです。

もしフランスでこの祭が祝われるとしたら、川崎にいたたくさんの観光客や

プロの写真家たちはこの3つの男根像を追いかけて行くでしょうか？セック

スについて話すことについては、はい！しかしそれを見せることについては、 ありえません！ ！生殖についてのテーマはほとんどの国では野蛮であると考

えます。 そのテーマについては十分に洗練されておらず、世界の偉大な宗

教によって説かれる良い教育に貢献することはできません。 日本を離れな

ければ、 これら神輿に私たちはワクワクします。私たちはこの様な発見をし、 川崎を去りました。美しい天真爛漫さをありがとう、 日本！

What remains hidden during the rest of the year is unveiled only that day: three large phalluses standing on the charts, one pink, a black one made of metal and a more archaic one in wood, emphasize the age and tradition of the ceremony and the mystery of sex which still fascinates us. Under the eyes of professional photographers and tourists around the mikoshis, the procession is scheduled around noon; the ceremony will not be less solemn.

At 10 am, the Shinto priest lights the sacred fire before the consecration of the altar, the public is happy to receive blessings and the protection of births, the protection of business, couple’s harmony and action against transmission of sexual diseases. In front of another altar, young children are dancing wearing kimonos. Their steps are slow and their movements are graceful. Around the temples there are many booths filled with souvenirs, key chains or lucky charms with the shape of small or large penis carved in many kinds of materials and for the joy of ladies some sweets with very realistic shapes are supposed to encourage births according to the kanji written on the packaging. When these sweets are brought to the mouth, the scene causes much amusement among the Japanese public contrasting to the attitude of foreigners much more skeptical about the good taste of the joke –but finally everybody enjoys posing in front of the camera. After few hours, you won’t be surprised to hear people saying: “Oh this one is so beautiful and well done. I want it!” The tone is so natural that people will start to laugh after making such a discovery. Happiness, friendly laughter, good spirit are reappearing since they are not prisoners of any religious constraints.

ulia is an artist who connects with people, transcending cultures and languages.

She has lived and studied in North America, Central America, Europe, and Japan and developed her own style of communicating with people and expressing herself through her art. The cultural and intellectual stimulations she has received through her extensive exposure to cross-cultural environments since her early age, has all come together and matured into her artistic realisation of attracting and charming hearts of many who come into contact with her paintings. Artistically, she has gone through stages of development from complicated symbolism to the present simplicity of lines and colours featuring her signature floral designs, for which she is well known for.

What role does the artist have in society?

Artist have different roles, but if there is a common denominator, it would be the power to touch and move people’s heart transcending all borders.

Explain your work in 5 words LOVE, PEACE, FUN, POWER, SPARKLING What art do you most identify with?

What work do you most enjoy doing?

I enjoy coloring the most.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

Powerful, full of life and love, the designs would look great on kimono fabric, the designs have a Japanese feel to it, it reminds me of Picaso, it feels like a Dali painting...

What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?

I have so many of them! As a child, I used to have a collection of crayons. One morning I wanted to color and opened my box of crayons, just to find it empty ! I looked for all my crayons for the next 2-3 days. I decided to step into the garden to clear my head just to find out our dog had eaten all of them. I must say, the garden looked very colorful.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I have worked as a Customer Service Rep., translator, administrative assistant and worked many part-time jobs.

What do you dislike about your work?

When my creativity is block.

What is your dream project?

To be asked to do a mural commemorating peace.

Never thought about it... Nobody.

Name something you love, and why.

I love to travel, because I get to see the colors of that country.

uring the 5th edition of the African Festival Yokohama, we sensed a burst of solidarity for some people and the opportunity for a massive reunion for others; which suggested that people won’t miss an appointment where they will experience an intense moment, united by the same passion.

Regarding the organization and the program of music for the 5th Edition which was excellent, so congratulations are addressed to Mr. Koffi Mateyi Edwin and his team: -what a masterstroke! Bravo!

First day: Once I arrived at the welcoming desk of the festival venue, I tried to contact the organizer of the event Mr. Koffi. # 7 Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE 14

フェスティバル会場に到着するとす ぐ、受付で私はこのイベントの主催 者であるKoffi氏とお会いしようとし ました。受付の方に話すと、 とても 優しく少し待つ様にと言われまし た。 そしてすぐにKoffi氏が現れまし た。概要説明を終えるとすぐに、彼 は私にプロの記者用バッジをくれ ました。 このバッジにより私は自由 に動き回って、写真を撮ったり、 ア ーティストたちにインタビューをし たり、バックステージに入ったりす ることができました。 3階に行くと、 オリエンタルなダンス ショーをやっていました 。3人の美 しい日本人女性によるベリーダン スでした。本当に目の保養でした！ 全てのショーは大きなステージで 行われました。 ショーが終わると すぐにフライドチキンの素晴らし い香りにつられ、私は食べ物のコ ーナーに移動しました！そこには たくさんのブースがありました：O Village –カメルーンレストラン、 タンザニアとガーナの売店もあり ました。 私はグリルしたチキンを味わうと、 次は2階へ行きました。 アンゴラ、 ガ ーナ、マダガスカル、 レソト、マリ、エ ジプト、モロッコなどたくさんの大 使館が展示をしていました。 それぞ れのブースは工芸品、マスク、 アフ リカの布、 ジュエリー、楽器、 アクセ サリー、 コーヒーそして各国の観光 の宣伝のパンフレットでいっぱい でした。 その中でアンゴラは目立っ ており、 そのプレゼンテーションは 金賞をもらってもよい程でした。 と ても魅力的な手工芸品のセレクシ

ョンでした。

マサイのブースで私はいくつかカシューを素早く食べると、3階へ戻りま した。Akwabaのショーを見逃すことはできません。彼らはこのフェスティ バルの常連の参加者で、彼らの歌の歌詞は暗記しています。 2日目：

土曜日、 もし雪も降ったのなら4つの季節全てを1日で体験した様な日 でした！朝はとても晴れていましたが、午後は雨が降り、夜には凍えるほ ど寒くなりました！悪天候にも関わらず、 たくさんの人々がこのイベントを 訪れました。 何も私がこの日のコンサート、特にMr. Rayのコンサート に参加するのを妨げることはできません。 ラインアップは魅力的でした。 ジャンベを演奏する日本人グループ”Africanjapone all starz”、セネガ ルのAssane Diabayeは自国の仲間たちと演奏しました：Omarはジャン ベ、Ousmane Diedhiouはバラフォンを演奏しました。

I talked to the front desk clerk who asked me very kindly to wait a moment, shortly after Mr. Koffi appeared. Once the presentations were finished, he gave me a Press badge. This badge allowed me to move freely, take pictures, interview artists, and access to the backstage etc...

I headed to the 3rd floor and found myself facing an oriental dance show: a belly dance performed by three beautiful Japanese women, a real treat for the eyes! All the shows took place on the big stage. As soon as the shows ended, I walked to the food corner, attracted by the wonderful smell of fried chicken! Many booths: O Village - Cameroon restaurant, Tanzanian and Ghanaian kiosks as well. I enjoyed my grilled chicken and went back to the second floor. Many Embassies were represented including Angola, Ghana, Madagascar, Lesotho, Mali, Egypt and Morocco. Their stalls were filled with many kinds of craftwork, masks, African fabrics, jewellry, musical instruments, accessories and coffee as well as flyers and pamphlets for the promotion of tourism in each of these countries. Angola, however, stood out and could’ve won the gold award for its presentation. The recipe: a touch of professionalism, a sense of warmth and a selection of very attractive artworks. My visit ended at the Masai booth where I ate a few cashews quickly before going back to the 3rd floor.

I couldn’t miss the show of Akwaba; -a regular participant of the festival and who the public sing-along with, knowing by heart the lyrics of the songs.

Second day: On Saturday, we almost had the range of four seasons in one day if snow had also fallen. The morning was very sunny, the afternoon was rainy and it was finally freezing cold in the evening! Despite the weather conditions, many people came to the event and luckily for them, the events were held in doors.

Nothing could have prevented me from attending the concerts, especially Mr. Ray, an African music lover. The line up was appealing with “Africanjapone all starz” a djembe Japanese group, followed by the Senegalese Assane Diabaye backed by his fellow countrymen: Omar playing djembe and Ousmane Diedhiou playing balafont...

3日目： いつも時間を追いかけ、 日頃よくそれに圧倒されます。私はその日遅刻し ました。10.40に会場に着き、私が1番であったと気付いた時にはどれだ け驚いたでしょう！ なぜだと思いますか？”Tam Tam Tchokue”のショーをどうやって見逃 すことができるでしょうか？彼らは4人のドラマーと1人のアメリカのダン サーから成るコンゴのTradi-modernグループです。 そのパフォーマンス は、前の週末に開催された相模原での第２回アフリカヘリテイジフェステ ィバルの際に感じたのと同様、 とても良い印象を私に残しました。 “Tam Tam Tchokue”のショーは驚くべきそして楽しい物でした。例えば 芸術的な独創性が欠けるとか、同じ音楽、 ダンスやドレスのスタイルを繰 り返す傾向にあるとか、 日本をベースとしているアフリカ人のミュージシ ャンについて人々が持っている一般的な固定観念とは完璧に反する物で した。良い評価をします！”Tam Tam Tchokue”はアフリカの伝統的な音 楽をカジュアルな服装でナイキのキャップを被って演奏するのは難しい と分かっていました。 彼らはアフリカの伝統的なダンス集団に似た衣装を仕立てました。本当 の伝統的な衣装と比べると、私個人的としては正確に言うと正しいスタイ ルではないと思いますが、彼らの意図は分かります。 完璧な振り付けとリズムが目と耳を楽しませてくれました。彼らは観客を 立たせようとしました。 その音楽は踊る人々の心をとらえ、エレキギターが トムトムの早いビートと歌い手の声と調和した時にクライマックスを迎え ました。 そして観客がステージに登った時、素晴らしいエネルギーが部屋 いっぱいになりました。人々は無意識に自由に踊ることができましたが、 フェスティバル期間のほんのひと時でしたので、短い時間であったのがと ても残念でした。 それから私はワークショップルームに立ち寄りました。 そこではKoffi Edwen氏がガーナの都会のダンスであるアゾントダンスの実演をしてい ました。最後に、私はメインステージに戻りました。 そしてついに”Nyama Kante & Jelidon”という、 ギニアの歌姫である美しいNyama Kanteと彼 女のバンドが登場しました。 このギニアの歌姫はそのカリスマ性を少し も失っていません。彼女はミュージシャンたちと一生懸命に働くプロのア ーティストです。 そしてステージの前にはマイクや音をチェックしたり、全 ての細かなことに目を光らせます。 だからこそ観客と彼女のファンたちは 心から彼女を応援するのです。 それを証拠に室内を見ると、 たくさんの 人でいっぱいでした！皆が彼女のパフォーマンスを待っていました。歌姫 Nyama Kanteと彼女のバンドを。 記者用バッジのおかげで私は一番前の席に行くことができ、彼女の最高 のパフォーマンスを一瞬たりとも見逃すことはありませんでした。彼女の 着ていたパールをあしらった、彼女の国の色を表した光輝くドレスが、彼 女の存在感は倍増させていました。 そしてそれは私にバマコでの日曜日 を思い出させました。 Nyama Kanteはいつも楽しく機嫌が良く、西アフリカの真の歌姫は彼女 のみがその秘密を知る、エネルギーに溢れた女性です。 Nyamaがステージに立つと、例え司会者がショーの時間を縮めようとし たとしても、何も誰も彼女を邪魔することはできません。司会者が何度も 彼女のパフォーマンスを止めようとしましたが、彼女が観客たちとの間に 築いた美しいラブストーリーの間に入り込むことはできませんでした。 こ の歌姫の魔法は来年予定されているコートジボアールのアビジャンでの 彼女のコンサートツアーに観客たちを旅立たせてしまうでしょう。 そうで す！日本人のミュージシャンで構成された彼女のバンドと一緒に定期的 にアフリカでパフォーマンスすることを任命された彼女は唯一のアフリカ 人のアーティストです：彼女は真の日本でのアフリカ文化の大使です。 最後に、 この第5回目のアフリカンフェスティバルよこはまは人々の期待 に応え、音楽、 そして様々なブースでの展示を成功させました。 このフェス ティバルはすぐに終わってしまいました。 しかし良いことは永遠には続か ないということを受け入れなくてはなりません！ # 7 Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE 15

Third day: Third day: Always running after time and often overwhelmed by my workload on normal days, I was late that day too, arriving at 10.40AM, so how surprised I was when I realised that I was among the first to show up at the festival venue! …guess why?

How could I miss the show of “Tam Tam Tchokue”? A Tradimodern group from Democratic Republic of Congo with four drummers and one American dancer. The performance of this band left me with the same very good impression that I had during the previous weekend in another festival “2nd Edition of the African Heritage Festival” in Sagamihara. “Tam Tam Tchokue” did a surprising and pleasant show. It is a perfect example to oppose to common stereotypes that people have about African musicians based in Japan, i.e. a lack of artistic creativity and a tendency to repeat the same musical, dance and dress styles. Rated Good!

“Tam Tam Tchokue” understood that it’s hard to play traditional African music wearing casual clothes and a Nike cap on the head. They ordered outfits tailored specially for them similar to traditional African dance companies.

Compared with real traditional attire, I personally think it is not exactly the right style but the intention was there.

Pleasure for eyes and ears thanks to the choreography and rhythms executed perfectly. They managed to make the audience stand up, the music was taking over the dancers, and the climax was reached when the electric guitar was combined with speed tom -tom beat and the voice of the singers. An enormous pool of energy filled the room when the audience climbed on stage. Too bad it only lasted a short time since it was the only moment of the Festival when the public was able to dance spontaneously and freely.

Then I stepped quickly into the workshop room where Mr. Koffi Edwen was doing a small demonstration of Azondo dance, an urban dance from Ghana, finally I went back to the main stage.

Then finally appeared the Guinean diva, the beautiful Nyama Kante and her band called “Nyama Kante & Jelidon”.

The Guinean diva has lost none of her charisma, she is a professional artist who works hard with her musicians and watches over every detail before going on stage, checking the microphone, sound etc.. # 7 Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE 16

This is the reason why the audience and her fans support her so sincerely. The proof was given when you were looking at the room completely full of people! Everybody was waiting for her performance, the diva Nyama Kante and her band. Thanks to my Press access badge I was able to reach the first seats, a significant privilege that allowed me to not miss a single moment of her superb performance.

Her presence, doubled by the effect of her glittering dress embroidered in pearls showing the colors of her country reminded me a Sunday in Bamako.

Nyama Kante is a woman who is always fun to be around and in good spirits, a true diva from West Africa, only she knows the secret source of her energy. When Nyama is on stage, nothing and no one can even interrupt her, even if the anchorwoman tried to shorten the length of her show.

The MC’s several attempts to stop her performance couldn’t come between the beautiful love story she keeps alive with her audience. The magic of this diva would probably bring that audience to travel with her in her tour in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire scheduled for next year. Yes! She is the only African artist installed in Japan that performs in Africa regularly with her band composed entirely of Japanese musicians: she is a true ambassador of African culture in Japan. In conclusion, the 5th edition of this program was a total success on the musical part and the exhibitions presented in different booths lived up to the public expectations. In my opinion, the shows ended too soon, but we have to accept that good things can’t last forever! !

f we had to give a prize based on democratic changeover of political choices, we should have granted Senegalese artists. As witness the mega concert held on Tuesday, April 5 organized to celebrate the inauguration of the new President of Senegal, at the University Anta Diop in Dakar, by the charismatic Youssou N’Dour, who has just been appointed Minister of Culture and Tourism of Senegal. This huge show brought together members of the civic movement “Y’en a marre” (- it’s enough) like Awadie, Tiken Jah Fakoli from Ivory Coast, Omar Pene and many others. Those musicians wanted to congratulate their fellow countrymen for their courage and wisdom that prevailed during the electoral period and also send a strong message to the new President who took oath on Monday, April 4, saying the same words that his predecessor used 12 years ago: “In front of God and the Senegalese nation, I swear to faithfully fullfill my duties as President of the Republic, to follow and comply with the clauses of the Constitution, to respect the institutions, to defend the integrity of the country and to spare no effort to build an African Unity”; solemnly declared his Excellency Mr. Macky Sall, new President of Senegal, his right hand raised accompanied by a round of applause from the assistance.

Indeed, those are the same Senegalese young people who ended forty years of socialist government in 2000 by electing Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, said bitterly one member. “It is we, young people who changed the system. As rappers, we encouraged people to vote. We elected Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, the now former president of Senegal! “, explained Thiat, one of the members of Keur Gui band, who joined the committee “Y’en a marre”. This civic movement has been created last January by the band Keur Gui, from Kaolack - central Senegal, to evict whom they had elected 12 years ago.

Anyway… In 12 years, Mr. Abdoulaye Wade has achieved what his predecessors could not do in 30 years. Only for those great results, the Senegalese can be thankful.

The fourth President of the Republic of Senegal is not a newcomer in politics in his country. He climbed all levels: Deputy Director of Senegal oil company, Interior Minister, Prime Minister and head of the previous government, President of the National Assembly before moving to the opposition. We should also notice two meaningful additional aspects. His wife Faye Marieme Sall is the first Senegalese woman to hold the office of First Lady. His predecessors were mostly accompanied by First Ladies from Europe.

He is also the first President of Senegal that has not experienced colonisation. Wish him good luck to the President of Senegal! We hope he will meet the expectations of Senegalese youth people who have placed their trust in himself.

私の人生は子どもの頃から常に音楽に囲まれてきました。 とても若い頃 からパフォーマンスをし、それが人生の一部になりました。私の父と母は 歌手です。私の兄弟姉妹もミュージシャンです。私には7人の兄弟姉妹が いますが、皆ミュージシャン、打楽器奏者、歌手です。

According to your profile, you were born in a family of griots Tell us abit about it.

I was surrounded by music all my life, since I was a kid perfoming at the very young age became a part of my life. My father and mother are singers. My brothers and sisters are musicians.I have seven brothers and sisters all musicians,percussionist and singers In 1998 ,, you were a member of the “shinomeu “ dance company. How was that experience?

That was a wonderful experience , as a lead drummer player of the company I believe I helped a lot of dancers to perform at the highest level with my music.

Tell us a little bit about Senegal, your country.

Well, all I say is Senegal is a wonderful, peaceful and a colorful, a country filled with music.

As an artist and a member of the senegalese diapora, how do you feel about the appointment of your fellow artist Youssou N’dour as the minister of culture and tourism by the newly elected president ?

Well, Youssou N’dour has always been a hero for us. A very talented Mbalax singer with enormous opportunties and power. For us it’s quite natural to see him becoming an important figure in our home country. He already accomplished a lot by himsef for Senegal accross the africa and the world.

His appointment shows the interest that the new president has to Senegalese artists.

Any advice to Senegalese or african artist in Japan?

Be inspired. We are musician heart and soul. Still we have to be inspired and by different music, such as jazz , soul , R&b , house or even Rock, African music is the roots of all music.

As an African musician , we should evolve more to continue to inspire the world.

How many cd’s have you released since you started your career? six so far , including the featuring Omar gaindefall.

Do you easily trust people ?

No, but when I trust somebody I really do till the end.

What would you say to those who say africans people don’t like to work together?

I ‘ m cool with all africans. but it is sad to say this but it is true most of african people do not trust each other, but youknow, that`s the way god created us...lol...

Any project or up coming events you would like to share with our readers ?

I’m working on a project right now. what I would like to say is I always wanted people to feel the power and the harmony of the djembe.With my group the Afro Bege , I’m really enjoying the experience and hope to create more music to let the japanese people to get to know us better.

n our last issue, we talked about African marriage. So in this one, I want to explore the Japanese one . As we do live here and do our best to adjust to a culture that differs from our own. I allowed myself to know a little bit more about the relationships between a Japanese couples.

I guess in order to have a good relationship with the people we are living with, we have to make an effort to get to know the culture and to get it right.

回の号では私たちはアフリカの結婚についてお話しまし た。 ですので、今回は日本の結婚について調査したいと思 います。私たちはここに住み、私たちの文化とは異なる文化に適 応する様に全力を尽くしていますので、 日本人カップルの間での 恋愛関係についてもう少し知ってみたいと思います。私たちが住 むこの国の人々との良い関係を築く為、その文化を知る努力を し、それを正しく理解する必要があると私は思います。

これは年齢35歳もしくはそれ以上の私の友人たちから学んだこ とです。私は愛無しで結婚することがまだあるということを知りま した。 そして“見合い”について初めて聞きました。 またもう一つア フリカと日本の共通点です（文化的に言うと）。恋愛結婚は多くの 場合には離婚に終わるので、恋愛結婚よりもお見合い結婚の方 がいいと言う人もいます。友人たちとの会話を通して、子どもたち が8歳やそれ以上になるまで親と同じベッドで寝ている家族が いることも分かりました。正直言って、私は両親と一緒に寝た最 後の夜を思い出すことができません！！！！！夜遅くに帰宅する忙 しい父親たちで、ベッドで寝ている他の家族を邪魔しない様に カウチで寝る人もいます。子どもたちと同じベッドで寝ることは良 い愛情の印だと思います。 そして遅く帰宅した時に邪魔しない様 にしようとするのは敬意の印だと思います。 もう１つ友人たちか ら学んだ言葉は“川”です。 これは両親が子どもと同じベッドで寝 る際に、子どもを真ん中に寝かせる様子を指します。 ああ！そうで す！１つの漢字はたくさんの意味を持っています！！！！そして親 子で一緒にシャワーを浴びる家族もいます。家族の一体感の良 い印ではありませんか？？？私は感謝すべきことだと思います。 国際結婚の場合はどうでしょう？？彼らは川の字に寝るのでしょ うか？うーん、 どうでしょう！！！読者の皆様、 これだから私は、私た ちは美しい世界に住んでいると言うのです。私たちの違いは私 たち皆を特別な物にするのです。違い無しにはつまらない世界 に生きることになります！！！！そうです、私たちはそれぞれの文化 にお互いに感謝し、理解し、尊重することを学ばなくてはなりま せん。 もしそれができれば...私たちは素晴らしい世界に住むこと になるでしょう！！！！どこにいようとも！！！！ # 7 Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE 22

This is one of the things I came to learn from my fellow Japanese friends age between 35+. I learnt that it is still possible to get married without love and this was the very first time that I heard about “miai”. A Japanese word for arranged marriage, one more thing that Africans and Japanese have in common (culturally speaking).

According to some of them, an arranged marriage is much better than a marriage based on love because in those ones, most end up with a divorce. Through my conversation with my friends, I came to learn that some families’ parent’s still share their beds with their children till the age of 8 or even older. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I spent the night with my parents! For isogashii fathers, who comes home very late to avoid disturbing the family, he’d prefer to sleep on the couch and leave the rest of the family on the bed. Sharing a bed with a child or the children to me, is as a good sign of affection. Not disturbing other members of the family when returning home late from work, to me, is a sign of thoughtfulness and respect. Another new word I learnt from my friend is the “kawa “(which means river).

They said kawa in this context is when parents share their bed and place the kid in the middle. Oh yes! one kanji can mean so many things! And some parent still take showers with their kids. Isn’t that a good sign of togetherness in a family? I see these things as qualities to appreciate. what about mixed or international marriages? do they do the kawa too? Uuuhmm I wonder! Dear readers, this is why I say we are living in a beautiful world. Our differences are what makes each and everyone of us special. Without these differences, we would be living in a boring world! Yes, we have to learn to appreciate, understand and respect one another’s culture, if we can do that, we will be living in a fantastic world! No matter where we are!!!

Après avoir payé les 100 euros, ils vont dans la chambre et font l’amour dans toutes les positions pendant 2 heures puis Claude s’en va.

David rentre vers 18h00 et demande : - Est-ce que Claude est venu cet après-midi ?

Choquée, Jessica répond : - Oui, il est passé quelques minutes.

- Et est-ce qu’il t’a donné 100 euros ?

(Elle pense: “Zut, il est au courant !”)
