Readressing the Space, terrain and culture

Bhavnagar is a coastal city on the eastern coast of Saurashtra, situated about 198 km from Gandhinagar, the state capital of Gujarat. Bhavnagar is renowned for its rich religious and cultural heritage, thriving industries, and vibrant wildlife. They have a proclivity for art and culture which is also evident from the several artists. The typical standard bay of the building reveals both Hindu, European and Saracenic motifs.

The project is about rejuvenating the local culture of art through architecture. The program is to design a space for a performing center by reviving the existing amphitheater and a large auditorium. The site is 52,000 Sq. m. The design is an approach to create mixed-use developments to reinforce compactness and multi-functionality, making more efficient use of land and helping to regenerate urban spaces. This opens the space up to local people and a wider cross-section of society, instead of catering only to people-oriented to classical art and supporters. Existing vegetation and undulated terrains gave the amazing gesture to site, for creating different levels and spaces.

The site was located near LM pharmacy college, Ahmedabad, India. It consisted of a 2500 sq.m. area with lush green surroundings with scattered institutional buildings. The project aimed to overcome the limitation of the natural material and its building techniques. The genuine character of natural materials was also demonstrated along with how they harmonize with the environment and blend in. Given material ‘Natural clay’, was an organic earthen material. As it is a substitute for the ground, the design can be raised and integrated down to the earth. By considering roof structures, spaces can be designed as a component of the landscape. When working with the ground, water direction becomes the main issue, thus the design advises modulating the earth by taking it into account. Different outdoor and indoor environments that accommodate various activities have been created using various plinth modulations. Openings of the modules have been created in a way that they can be used as a large shaded sitting and peeping out for children. With the aid of landscape development, several activities were connected. A big circular roof was supported by a substantial load-bearing retaining wall that was built underground. The walls and roof further merged into the ground section of the activity.

Urban Segregation and Urban Form

The purpose of the urban land revision project was to create smaller breathing spaces among the densely populated areas by developing the lakefront and mosques as community gathering green spaces. The value of land as a resource rises as a city expands, outpacing the value of the livelihoods that depend on it. The project was a component of a broader planning initiative covering an area of 1.2 sq. km, which aimed to improve and revitalize the Ahmedabad neighborhood that was previously bustling with business. The master plan’s approach fosters interaction while putting a focus on wise land use, to bridge the class and religious gaps. The objective is to maintain Bapunagar’s distinctive street character while creating a pedestrian connection to the neighborhood. Concern level is also raised by minimal road maintenance and simple traffic flow. Plot and functional divides should be made in a way that enhances the context and preserves the spirit of the current characters.

To allow for individual design, the site was further divided into plots. The result served as a threshold that combined areas with three distinct characteristics and functions, including public places, small shops, and warehouses. Street characteristics aid in defining the character of space volumes that mimicked the existing architectural typologies to create recognizable subtleties in modern places.

The movement aspect intends to create an environment concerning the built form and is the first attribute to be seen and stepped through by the people. It also presents the composition of different elements that define the character of space through movement. The thesis will analyze the case of institution building in Ahmedabad, Gujarat; evolving from the independence of India. The thesis describes the influence of architecture which shapes human movement through choreographing sequential spaces. As this task demands a comprehensive study of the movement pattern of a person through built space, hence the case is analyzed frame by frame. From there It highlights the factors responsible for a person’s movement that generates the pattern; how they are drawn towards or diverted from or walk through a particular space by mapping the human movement and by interviewing people. The study will guide through an intricate procedure or a maze of aspects that encourage people to move in a particular pattern and its effect. From this research and inferential analysis of the case example, the study will further help to understand the guidance of tangible and intangible architectural attributes for sequential choreography of movement.

Thesis Inclination:

The research inclined towards derive connection between Architecture and Spatial Movement of the user. To curate the connection, research question formed which supports by the findings and the conclusion.

What are the aspects of architecture that encourage people to move in a particular manner in space; and how is heritage playing an important role in this?

Intensity of pause

The ashram has developed with time. Many architects have worked upon different part of the ashram according to Gandhi’s philosophy and its context. So, the Ashram structure has changed over the time.

In book written by Paul Cobley in 2009, he mentioned that “Narration is not just about the three-dimension expression of space but ‘Time’ adds a fourth dimension to its experience. Because the narrative is human relation in time.”

Conclusion

Architecture has the ability to mold the perception of the user. It can be achieved by choreographing the movement in the different spaces in a building.

Elaborate spatial organization and appropriate articulation of the spatial frames are the key to a rich experience of a building. Every kind of spatial organization imparts certain kinds of experiences which are embedded in the movement patterns within the space.

By addressing each spatial frame individually and meticulously, each space gets its own unique prominence. Thereby, the movement through a passage no longer becomes a servient factor for reaching the programmatic spaces.

It is the multiplicity and the juxtaposition of different tangible and intangible elements that shapes the layering of the spatial frames and turns helps in determining the number of pauses and the time spent while moving through them.

The project called for a building that existed for 30 years and needed rejuvenation. The government’s proposal includes education of children from lower socioeconomic status and propagating space and activities for the growth and betterment of the community living around as the increased population density led to encroachment of community spaces. It leads to creating a space that might not be as opulent as those at other elite schools, but are nonetheless fascinating and conducive to learning and institute communal activities. The school will accommodate students of elementary standards. The site is situated in the dense residential fabric, the busy neighborhood of Ahmedabad. The school covers roughly 1500 sq. mt of ground cover. The idea here is that a school should be as playful as a mind of a child. The idea was to understand and employ various details and techniques that ultimately lead to enhanced spatial experiences in the building. All the details have a specific purpose of ultimately converting the initial concept of minimal and nature-oriented design.

Metaslum

- Evolo Skyscraper

Bengaluru, being the fifth largest metropolis in India, still has a significant part of its population living in slums. The action being taken by the Sir M Vishwesvaraya Prizee government in India has been certainly important in raising the poorer’s quality of life. However, many aspects related to the slum dwellers’ way of life have not been looked upon. The Meta Slum is a response that provides a better infrastructure for the jhuggi inhabitants, respecting their origins. They would be even included in the construction of the building, according to their skills, augmenting the feeling of the property. The project thinks beyond giving people a home, it carries their lifestyle and predicts the future, allowing incremental modifications and urban expansion. Commercial interaction, colors and traditional materials are essential prerogatives of the project.
