A Moose for Jessica In 1987 in Shrewsbury, Vermont, a young moose appeared on the property of Larry Carrara. The juvenile moose came back the next day, and the day after that, showing specific affection for Jessica, a Hereford Cow with an adorable little white face.

Josh the moose stayed in the vicinity of Larry’s property for 76 days. Soon the story was picked up by national media, being extensively covered in the New York Times, attracting crowds of thousands of people to catch a glimpse of the love stricken moose and ambivalent cow. At one point, local authorities counted a crowd of 4,000 people on the property. Suddenly, on January 7, 1987, Larry noticed that Josh had lost one of his antlers, a common winter development that can reduce a male’s drive to mate. Larry predicted he would soon leave, and he did. Months later in May, Larry noticed a moose standing near the pasture, but couldn’t get close enough to confirm if it was Josh. However, we would like to think it was. Jessica the beautiful Hereford, passed away at the age of 23 in 2003.
