Today marks the culmination of the hard work and dedication you have invested toward your Rutgers–Camden work in the classroom and in the community. As you step across the Commencement stage, you are joining a distinguished network of more than 58,000 alumni, whose Rutgers degrees have empowered them to achieve their dreams.
This year is particularly special for me, as I began my tenure as Chancellor in 2021—the same year many of you embarked on your academic journey here. Together, we have faced challenges, celebrated achievements, and grown in ways we could have never imagined. Your resilience and determination have been truly inspiring.
Whether you choose to continue your education, embark upon your professional career, or take some time to explore the world around you, know that the Rutgers–Camden community remains committed to your success. Mickalene Thomas
Mickalene Thomas is a celebrated multidisciplinary artist best known for her vibrant, rhinestone-adorned portraits of Black women. Her bold practice—spanning painting, photography, collage, video, and installation—explores the complexities of Black female identity, beauty, and empowerment within the context of the Western art historical canon and the African Diaspora. Drawing on sources ranging from art history to popular culture, Thomas reclaims and reimagines spaces where Black women have historically been excluded or misrepresented.
Beyond her studio practice, Thomas is a Tony-nominated co-producer, educator, curator, and mentor dedicated to uplifting emerging artists and diversifying the art world. She curates exhibitions around the globe, often spotlighting underrepresented voices and challenging dominant narratives in contemporary art. In 2023, she made history as the first Black queer femme artist to have a scholarship endowed in her name at the Yale University School of Art—her alma mater—cementing her influence not only as an artist but as a changemaker in arts education. Thomas’s work is featured in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian, reflecting her powerful contribution to shaping contemporary visual culture.

Aaron Chang
President, Jefferson Health–East Region
Aaron Chang, FACHE, is the President of Jefferson Health – East Region, bringing vast experience from the academic, nonprofit, and private sectors. Since joining Jefferson in 2023, he has been dedicated to advancing community health and driving strategic growth in New Jersey.
In his role, Chang oversees the operations and vision for Jefferson’s three acute care hospitals in Cherry Hill, Stratford, and Washington Township—each recognized among the top 10 hospitals in New Jersey by U.S. News & World Report and awarded prestigious “A” grades by the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Report. Under his leadership, Jefferson Health has made significant investments to improve patient access and enhance care throughout South Jersey, including the development of state-of-the-art medical oncology and radiation oncology suites at the Cherry Hill campus and a modern multi-specialty outpatient center in Washington Township.
Prior to Jefferson, Chang served as President of Sisters of Charity Hospitals and Central Market Leader at Catholic Health in New York, where he spearheaded various initiatives, such as the opening of a Chemical Dependency Treatment Center to address the opioid epidemic, earning state recognition for emergency preparedness during the COVID-19 pandemic, and launching the hospital’s first Inclusion and Belonging committee.
His career also includes leadership roles at CommonSpirit Health, where he served as Market Chief Operating Officer for St. John’s Hospitals, and at UHS-Palmdale Regional Medical Center, where he was Associate Administrator.
A recipient of the American College of Healthcare Executives Regent Award, Modern Healthcare Top 25 Emerging Leader Award, and ROI-NJ Healthcare Influencer Award, Chang strives to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those he serves. As a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, he is deeply committed to industry leadership and innovation. He also actively contributes to the community as a board member for the New Jersey Hospital Association, Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey, Camden Coalition, and Jefferson Health Foundation – New Jersey.
Chang holds a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science, with an emphasis in Biochemistry, from the University of California, Davis, and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration from California State University, East Bay.
A native of California, Chang now resides in Moorestown, NJ, with his wife and two daughters.

Amy B. Mansue has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Inspira Health since August 2020. With nearly 40 years of experience in the health care industry, Amy has built a distinguished career, spanning leadership roles in both the public service space and within prominent New Jersey hospitals and health systems.
Throughout her career, she has remained deeply committed to strengthening the health care workforce. In recognition of the vital role nurses play in delivering outstanding patient care, Amy has led initiatives focused on workforce development and professional growth. Additionally, she has led Inspira Health in building a culture where team members feel respected, supported, and empowered to succeed.
Amy holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social welfare from The University of Alabama.

Jacquelyn A. Suárez RLAW'15
Commissioner, Department of Community Affairs
Jacquelyn A. Suárez, J.D., RLAW'15 was named Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) on September 18, 2023, making her the first Hispanic commissioner to lead the DCA. Commissioner Suárez is committed to the Department’s ongoing mission to provide residents, local governments, businesses, and community development organizations with financial support, administrative guidance, and technical assistance to help improve the quality of life for New Jersey families.
As Commissioner of one of the State's largest departments, she is responsible for a $1.485 billion operational budget and oversees more than 1000 employees. Commissioner Suárez spearheads a variety of departmental initiatives, including ending veteran homelessness in NJ, expanding shared services, developing homeownership opportunities, and creating a pipeline for public sector employment. Before her appointment as Commissioner, Suárez served as the Director of the Division of Local Government Services since 2021.
Commissioner Suárez leads the Department with a focus on three core pillars: Data-Driven Decision Making, Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships, and Solutions-Focused Approaches to Managing Challenges. These guiding principles have empowered the Department to address policy challenges more effectively, resulting in improved outcomes. Under her leadership, DCA has allocated over $100 million through the Affordable Housing Trust Fund to develop affordable housing statewide. She has positioned the Department as a leader in providing innovative data tools that empower stakeholders to leverage data for insights, decision-making, and research.
Commissioner Suárez has also prioritized addressing wealth disparities by expanding programs to build generational wealth through homeownership.
Commissioner Suárez is a New Jersey native who earned her Juris Doctor from Rutgers School of Law in Camden and her bachelor’s degree in communications, legal institutions, economics, and government from American University in Washington, D.C. She is a member of both the New Jersey and New York bar associations. She is also a member of the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey.

Founder and CEO of A Breeze of Hope Foundation
Brisa De Angulo, J.D., RLAW'12 is founder and CEO of A Breeze of Hope Foundation. Additionally, Brisa is co-founder of the Brave Movement Global and the Movimiento de Valientes Latin America, sister movements that seek to end child sexual violence and improve and promote legislation that protects the best interests of children. Brisa is a member of the Lancet Commission on Violence Against Women and Children, one of the most rigorous and prestigious academic journals in the world. Brisa is also a member of the leadership council of the Global Women's Institute at George Washington University, and is part of the To Zero coalition against child sexual violence.
As a lawyer, psychologist, and human rights activist, she dedicates her life to improving access to justice and healing for survivors of childhood sexual violence. Brisa, herself a survivor, uses her story and expertise to elevate survivor voices, provide effective and trauma-centered direct services, and drive forward public policy and legislation that safeguards children and ensures their access to justice and healing.
With 18 years of experience working with survivors, and 22 years working with early childhood development, Brisa’s insights have created a remarkably effective set of interventions. Her center for child survivors of sexual violence in Cochabamba, Bolivia implements these interventions on a daily basis, serving more than 500 children every year.
Additionally, Brisa is the petitioner and key witness in Caso De Angulo vs Bolivia, a landmark case before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. The High Court’s 2023 ruling in her case sets new standards for legislation pertaining to sexual violence, government responses to child survivors, and State responsibility to train all personnel at the national level who work with child survivors. The case is binding on 25 Countries in Latin America and impacts over 180 million children.
As the Court noted in its judgement, “Brisa is a person more profoundly concerned with attaining protection and guarantees of non-repetition for the countless children presently drowning than with her own suffering.” The judges further emphasized Brisa’s courage in refusing all monetary reparations and settlement attempts from the State in favor of her demands for concrete action to protect all girls and boys everywhere.
During the past year, Brisa has led A Breeze of Hope’s expansion into Colombia, Honduras, Argentina, Chile, and Peru. Brisa and her team are mobilizing local attorneys and professionals to increase legislative and policy protections for child victims.

The wearing of the academic dress dates back to the early days of the oldest universities in the world. In the American Council on Education’s book titled American Universities and Colleges, it is suggested the “Gowns may have been counted necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head...”
Throughout the years, European universities have continued to show great diversity in their academic dress. American universities, on the other hand, when they decided to adopt academic dress, immediately established a code of regulations which today is followed by almost all American institutions. The establishment of this code has made it possible to distinguish the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees and at the same time recognize the university which has given them the degree.
Gowns: Bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. Master’s gown, worn open or closed, has oblong sleeves, the front part of which frequently is cut away at the elbow. Doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. It is worn open or closed. Cotton, poplin, or similar material is used for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and rayon or silk ribbed material is used for the doctor’s degree.
Hoods: The hoods vary in sizes: 48 inches for the doctor’s degree, 42 inches for the master’s, and 36 inches for the bachelor’s. All hoods are lined in silk in the academic color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. If the institution has more than one color, the colors are shown in divisions using chevrons. The binding or edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in the color designating the subject in which the degree was granted.

The color or colors of the lining of the hood for the nine colonial colleges are: scarlet, Rutgers; crimson, Harvard; green-gold-silver, William and Mary; blue, Yale; red-blue, Pennsylvania; orangeblack, Princeton; light blue-white, Columbia; brown, Brown; and green-white, Dartmouth.
Caps: Black mortarboards or soft hats are worn for all degrees. The gold tassel signifies a doctorate.
