his issue is dedicated to my favorite place, the Adirondacks, a 6 million acre park owned by both private individuals and the State of NY. It is a mountainous region, with a myriad of interconnected lakes and streams flowing through it. Forests of balsam, pine and white birch are home to bobcats, bears, and deer. This is my place of inspiration. To properly represent such a majestic place, I have made this a triple-issue. It is a hobby of mine to paint “en plein air”. I have included several nature studies that I have done in the past 3 years. For those of you who enjoy my collage work, I have included the first 10 spreads from a journal I have done called “Don’t Forget Black & White.” I also take a secret pleasure in painting on trees out in the woods. There are some photos of this tree art. Did I mention photographs? There is a photography section, too! I bring a bit of everything to you this time in the TRUNK.

On the next several pages are some of my nature studies. I do these on location and the idea here is to paint or draw from life, so I usually do not add or subtract elements from the scene as I work. Included in the Trunk are some examples done in summer and fall.

• Dr. Suess trees, watercolor, pen & ink painted from a photograph i did this during a sad moment of my life. i was very depressed and inward. i was staying in a hotel at the time, devoid of any scenery or signs of the earth. i took out a photo i happened to have with me and created this in 2 very late night sessions, staring at the picture instead of a tv.

• facing page ivanhoe, watercolor this painting was done on location while on a camping trip. the lake was loaded with salamanders. near the campsite was this strange burial area of glass jars, rusty cans, and rotted wood which i assume was the remnants of an old settlement. in this pile was this unusual canning jar embossed with the word “ivanhoe”. i caught the salamanders and kept them in this jar as i painted.
• pine with birds, watercolor, pen & ink this was my very first attempt at watercolor combined with pen and ink. this tree had hardly any live matter. but yet, the birds chose this tree as a perch. on the next page is a digitized version of this painting, using the watercolor scan and a couple of lake photographs.
• 3 pines in the wind, horseshoe lake watercolor this is the most recent watercolor in this group. I did this in july 2002, when we were on vacation.
