Storied 86th Street Nathan’s to Close This Weekend, Marking End of Era in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights

After more than four decades on 86th Street, the storied Nathan’s Famous franchise on the Bay Ridge/ Dyker Heights border will serve its last meals on Sun., Jan. 6.

The nearly 20,000-squarefoot property, 650 86th Street, has been a Nathan’s since the late ‘70s, before which it was a fast food burger chain named Wetson’s and prior to that, Mitchell’s Drive-In. It also includes an Arthur Treacher’s, which specializes in fast food fish and chips, and which will close this weekend, too.

The eateries’ closing will mark the end of an era in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights.

“The only place to go for a hotdog in Brooklyn is Nathan’s,” said Lisa Farruggio-Marino, a local resident and teacher at P.S. 180 who

occasionally shared a lunch with friends at the local chain. “The convenience of it being on 86th Street was great since going to Coney Island in the winter isn’t always ‘fun’ to do.

“I’m sorry it’s closing,” she added.

Ted General, a local historian and columnist for this paper, called the eatery “legendary.”

“Coincidentally, the closing will also mark the end of the last drive-thru restaurant in the Bay Ridge/ Dyker Heights area,” he said.

The space was sold in late October to “660 86 LLC,” according to the sale’s Acquisition of Assets, with sources connecting that to Efthimios Zisimopoulos, a.k.a. Tim Ziss, of Allied Properties.

“Ziss,” a source told this paper amidst the sale, “has been buying up whatever’s big and becomes available in Bay Ridge for quite some time.”

However, an unofficial, proposed rendering of a three-floor shopping space making its rounds on social media also raised eyebrows.

Either way, locals maintain, the sale reflects the end of an important chapter in southern Brooklyn history. One Facebook user responded to news of the closing date with a line from a classic Joni Mitchell song: “They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot.”

A sign on the business’ front doors thanked patrons for “40 years of friendship and great memories.”

Warmer Temperatures Help Coney Island Polar Bears Welcome in the New Year

cause can be enjoyed in many locations throughout the country, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the oldest winter bathing organization in the U.S. The seasoned members of the Polar Bear Club enjoy swimming in the Atlantic every Sunday from November to April.

There was no fee for swimmers or observers, although there was a suggested $25 donation to benefit local Coney Island organizations including the New York Aquarium, the Alliance for Coney Island, Coney Island USA, the Coney Island History Project, and other local arts and history organizations. All participants

Thankfully, this year’s Polar Bear Plunge was decidedly warmer than last year’s frigid swim. In fact, the temperature was a balmy 59° after last year’s frosty 37° and the water was a veritable sauna compared to 2018’s icy 17° temps.

Come Take a Winter Stroll Through Williamsburg’s Domino Park

Here’s a sweet way to start 2019: Stroll around the scenic new park that surrounds the landmarked Domino Sugar Refinery.

Brooklyn’s expected to have a significant stretch of 40-plusdegree weather, which is a treat this time of year.

Warmish temps make a walk on the East River’s shoreline sound like great fun.

Six-acre Domino Park will keep your eyeballs engaged.

The park’s got a quarter-mile-long shoreline expanse with an esplanade alongside it.

This waterfront walkway offers great views of the Empire State Building and the rest of Midtown’s iconic skyline. You can see the World Trade Center, too.

Williamsburg Let’s see now, Williamsburg.

"Burg," we know, means a town or village.

But who was the "William" who gave this neighborhood — once a town — his name?

To begin, this area was originally bought from the local Indians by the Dutch West India Company in 1638 and became part of the town of Boswijck.

After the English took New Netherland in 1664, the name of the town was Anglicized to Bushwick; the townspeople generally called it Bushwick Shore.

It was a rural area until in 1810 a real-estate speculator, Richard Woodhull, acquired 13 acres in the area where there was a ferry service from what is today Metropolitan Avenue to Corlear’s Hook in Manhattan. He named the area after Col. Jonathan Williams, a U.S. engineer who had originally surveyed the site.

It was incorporated as the Village of Williamsburgh within the town of Bushwick in 1827.

Williamsburg rapidly expanded during the first half of the 19th century and separated itself from Bushwick.

The population in the area continued to grow until, in 1855, Williams-

burg was annexed along with the town of Bushwick by what was then became the City of Brooklyn — and the “h” in the name was dropped.

The construction of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1903 opened up the area to immigrants seeking to get out of the tenements of the Lower East Side in Manhattan.

Today, its neighbors are Greenpoint, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick and, farther east, Ridgewood in Queens.

Interestingly, 27 of the streets in Williamsburg are named with the last names of signers of the Declaration of Independence.

WILLIAMSBURG HISTORY

Williamsburg was originally part of the Dutch town of Boswijck (Bushwick). Dutch, French and Scandinavian farmers settled in the area with their African slaves in the late 1600s and the land remained rural until 1802 when Richard Woodhull envisioned a residential area for Manhattan workers.

Woodhull began a ferry service from what is today Metropolitan Avenue to Corlear’s Hook in Manhattan and purchased 13 acres around the landing, naming it Williamsburgh after Col. Jonathan Williams, who had originally surveyed the site.

His service lacked interest though and Woodhull went bankrupt in 1811. David Dunham then tried his luck with a steam ferry that became largely successful. Industry soon poured into the neighborhood in the form of distilleries and sugar refineries along the shore.

Some of the largest firms in America, including Pfizer Pharmaceutical and what is today the Domino Sugar Refineries, were all launched in Williamsburg during the mid-1800s.

Population grew so large that the neighborhood was chartered as a city in 1852 before it was annexed by the City of Brooklyn in 1855.

The face of Williamsburg changed in 1903 when the Williamsburg Bridge opened and Eastern European immigrants left the crowded Lower East Side of Manhattan to come to Brooklyn. Sixstory tenements were built and brownstones and wood frame houses were turned into multiple dwellings. By 1917, the population had more than doubled and the area had the most densely populated blocks in Brooklyn.

Jewish immigrants fleeing Nazism settled in what is today called Southside but after a large Latin American influence, the section of the neighborhood is now referred to as Los Sures. The Northside, filled with a mix of artists and young professionals, was separated from the rest of Williamsburg when the BrooklynQueens Expressway was built in 1957.

It’s part of the developer’s Domino Sugar Refinery residential, office and retail megadevelopment.

James Corner Field Operations designed Domino Park, which opened in June. Brooklyn artist Mark Reigelman designed its playground equipment, which looks like a miniature version of an old-fashioned sugar refinery.

The place to go for a bird’s eye view of the park is up a staircase to an elevated walkway made of salvaged bits of refinery equipment. Two Trees culled the equipment from Domino factories it demolished to make way for new buildings such as 260 Kent Ave., which is rising skyward.

The Walentas family’s company of course left the landmarked Havemeyers & Elder Filter, Pan & Finishing House standing.

The American round-archstyle refinery at 292-314 Kent Ave. was constructed in the early 1880s.

DONOFRIO INC. The cover of the Eagle’s special Consolidation Number from Jan. 2, 1898 idealizes the creation of the five boroughs.

ON JAN. 1, 1898, the independent City of Brooklyn ceased to exist, and New York City as we know it was born.

The idea of consolidation had been around for decades, but with the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 it seemed inevitable.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle was an early and strong opponent of consolidation, writing in 1871, “The only argument on which this plea can be defended is that New York needs in her government the kind of men Brooklyn already has entrusted with the management of her own affairs. Our municipal matters are run at least three hundred per cent cheaper than those of New York, allowing for all the disproportion of population.”

But by the late 1890s, Brooklyn’s independent status was a lost cause.

On New Year’s Eve 1897, six former mayors attended a reception at Brooklyn’s City Hall. Also present was Frederick Wurster, the last mayor of the City of Brooklyn, whose office was abolished at the stroke of midnight.

On Jan. 2, 1898, the Eagle published a special “Consolidation Number” devoted to the birth of the new city and remembrances of the old one.

“The City of Brooklyn may have passed away,” the Eagle reported, “but that civic pride which characterized it was inspired by the reception that took place in the mayor’s office. It cropped out on every side, and though the tremendous assemblage at the City Hall could hardly have been said to have been merry, it was patriotic and ready to appreciate everything that was said in favor of the city that was loved and the borough that would be loved just as the city had been.

“It was in truth a family gathering and the six mayors who were there to meet the thousands of Brooklynites who wished to see them were greeted like old friends, and appropriate or inappropriate as it may seem, there were tears in the eyes of some of the old Brooklynites who grasped the hand extended to them. Yet it was by no means a wake that took place, for the sentiment of everyone present was that the pride that characterized the proceedings should be an incentive to make this borough the greatest in the great municipality that was born when the City Hall bell tolled the hour of midnight.”

“Under the law passed by the Legislature in May, 1895, the barber shops in the City of Brooklyn closed their doors on Sunday. For the last few days those shops which had remained shut on the first day of the week have posted up notices conspicuously that on and after January 1 their places of business will be open on Sunday.

“At the time of the passage of the law New York City and Saratoga were for some reason exempted from its provisions. Now that Brooklyn is to become a borough of the Greater New York the law is to be construed as covering the territory within the greater city and all barber shops will again open their doors on Sunday.”

ON JAN. 3, 1944, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “With a series of terrific blasts which rocked the entire metropolitan area, a United States destroyer blew apart and sank early this morning a few miles off the shore of the Rockaways. Latest Navy Department reports said at least 170 survivors had been accounted for out of a crew of at least 200. The Navy, refusing to divulge the name of the ship pending notification of next of kin of the missing, released the following official description: ‘The ship had anchored in her position (given as six miles northeast of Sandy Hook) at 0330 (3:30 a.m.) and was making ready to move out at 0700 (7 a.m.). There was a terrific explosion. There was no indication of the cause. All communications on the ship were disrupted. The mast toppled. The bridge buckled and collapsed, and one man said that he saw the barrel of the forward 5-inch gun whirling through the air. Many men were blown overside into the water by the blast. There was no disorder and firefighting parties were organized.” The USS Turner was commissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1943.

More than 130 sailors were killed during its destruction.  ON THIS DAY IN 1846, the Eagle reported, “Texas — A State in Full. — The Resolutions for the admission of Texas into the Union; the act to extend the laws of the Union over the state of Texas; and the act to establish a collection district in the state of Texas, and for other purposes, have been duly signed and transmitted by the president of the United States to the president of Texas, by Capt. Todd, of the Texan Navy.”

The Colonel’s death came as a shock to the people of Oyster Bay, as friends knew that he was about the house the greater part of yesterday, reading and doing some writing ... ast weekend’s revelation that funds raised by the New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators on its “Caucus Weekend” held in Albany annually were being mismanaged is likely to grow into a full-blown scandal.

Here’s why: The Association, a 501(C4) charitable organization, raises money from sponsors for scholarships for minority youth.

Sponsorships, mostly from corporations, can run as high as $50,000. The sponsorships, in being provided to a charitable organization, are not covered by the state election law, which allows the corporate sponsors, under the umbrella of funding educational scholarships, to make what would otherwise be an excessive political contribution.

If the funding actually went to scholarships, it would be fine. Unfortunately,

as the New York Post’s investigation showed, for the past two years there has been no record of scholarships being awarded. In the two years previous to those, only six percent of the money raised went to scholarships.

It appears almost all the funding -- including the significant corporate funding -- was going to throw the legislators, all of whom are Democratic, a big weekend party. There were some forums and panels, but mostly the “Caucus Weekend” was just a big, multi-day party in which large groups, including lobbyists, could mingle in a setting they paid to produce.

The investigation claims, among other things, that $6,000 was paid one year for transportation, $3,000 for a Sunday preacher, plus concerts and parties that literally cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

There are only a few possibilities for the funds

raised: All of the $500,000 raised was eaten up by the event, some of the money is sitting somewhere unaccounted for, or it disappeared. What is certain is the primary purpose of the donations -- scholarships -- never happened. Worse yet are the answers or lack of answers New York State legislators offered.

Since legislators are involved, both the Senate and Assembly legislative ethics committees as well as the Joint Committee on Public Ethics (JCOPE) should look into the matter.

Make no mistake about it -- this is a big deal. Public concern about the legislature, governor and former attorney general with respect to ethics, as well as possible criminal activity, has been a dominating aspect of the news for at least the past eight years.
