Eyewitness News was the first to report that a donor has stepped forward to help save ten-year-old Khadijah Sabir’s life.

When it was learned that a donor had finally been found, the District 21 Community Education Council posted a two-word reaction on Facebook. “Great news!” the message read.

There had been an all-out effort to find a donor, according to CEC 21 officials. The CEC sent out notices to all of its 40 schools asking potential donors to step forward. The CEC covers schools in Coney Island, Gravesend and parts of Bensonhurst.

Officials at Khadijah’s school, P.S. 177, also joined the search for a donor, reaching out to parents of students to see if anyone would be willing to be tested to determine if they were a match.

In her message on the National Kidney Registry’s website, Khadijah wrote that she is grateful for the love and care she is getting from her family and her doctors. “They all are so good to me and do everything they can to make my life a bit easy,” she wrote.

Treyger is also seeking $28 million to hire additional social workers for public schools. “The New York City school system has 1.1 million students. There are 5,500 school safety agents. But there are only 1,300 social workers and only 550 school psychologists,” he said.

Social workers are crucial, according to Treyger. “They

are licensed. They are skilled.

They know what they’re doing. They know how to navigate the bureaucracy. It’s not a job for a consultant. Social workers can provide direct services to children who have been through trauma, like children living in the shelter system. Living in a shelter can be traumatic,” he said.

Treyger vowed to continue to fight for pay parity for educators working in community based organizations that provide pre-kindergarten classes

under the mayor’s Pre-K for All program.

Teachers in community based organizations make less than their public school counterparts, according to Treyger, who is pushing to have $89 million put into the city budget to bring parity.

Without it, community based organizations will continue to have a hard time retaining instructors, he said.

“Teachers leave to go elsewhere to make more money,” he added.

Mr. Rose goes to Washington: The first 100 days

The classic Jimmy Stewart movie about an idealistic young man who goes to Washington to make a difference in the Senate seems to mirror the path freshman U.S. Rep. Max Rose has taken during his first 100 days in Congress.

Rose, a Democrat, sailed into office on a blue wave of change with a fervent following of young and passionate volunteers who helped him unseat incumbent GOP U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan.

The 32-year-old veteran, who represents the 11th Congressional District, which includes parts of southern Brooklyn and all of Staten Island, has experienced a great deal in a short time. He served as an active duty officer in Afghanistan from 2012-2013 and earned a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge.

Rose is Ranger-qualified and continues to serve in the Guard. He currently serves on the House Committees on Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security, and is chairperson of the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence.

Rose recently took the time

to sit down with this paper to answer some questions about his first impressions of serving in the nation’s capital, what he has accomplished and what he hopes to accomplish going forward.

Q: First of all, congratulations on your first 100 days in office. Is it everything you thought it would be?

Rose: That and more.

Privilege is an overused term, but this is truly a great privilege.

It’s an extraordinary honor and it’s one that you can’t take lightly. It’s a great joy to be able to represent 100,000 people and to be their voice in Congress and to advance the ball forward. I couldn’t ask for anything else.

Q: Tell me about the significance of the first bill you passed allowing construction of the East Shore Seawall on Staten Island? Why did this take precedence?

Rose: Six years after Superstorm Sandy, the seawall wasn’t even started yet. The money was there but it got tied up in bureaucracy and all the while people were literally and figuratively staring out at the seas that decimated their homes, and they hadn’t seen

any construction started.

And so we put everything we had, taking the baton from Dan Donovan in terms of getting this last piece of bureaucratic red tape eliminated. I hope, and I know, that when we break ground on this seawall and as we continue to build it, we’re also going to see real estate value increase; we’re going to see flood insurance bills go down. And people are going to know how government can get it right.

The bill was signed by the president. There haven’t been instances of a freshman getting a bill signed by the president.

This wasn’t just the House, it was signed by the president.

Q: You are the first member from New York City to chair the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Intelligence and Counterterrorism. Tell me about the initiative to increase Homeland Security funding for counterterrorism programs and your bipartisan effort to build support and educate new members of Congress on the importance of fully and permanently funding the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund?

Rose: Let’s start with the Victim Compensation Fund.

lem. We’re doing everything we can to have Congress resoundingly pass this, and then have the Senate pass it as well, and then have the president sign it.

At one point or another Congress has got to get something done. They can’t get

locked up and tied up in questions of cost, bureaucracy and legality. We have to get this done and in the right way.

Lawmakers demand Verrazzano toll discount for Brooklyn drivers

State Sen. Andrew Gounardes announced he is introducing legislation to give Brooklyn motorists who frequently travel over the VerrazzanoNarrows Bridge the same discount that Staten Islanders enjoy, calling the recently imposed $19 toll “highway robbery.”

Under Gounardes’ proposal, Brooklyn residents who drive over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge 10 times or more a month will pay $5.50 per trip with E-ZPass, the same rate Staten Islanders pay.

“We have so many people who have to cross that bridge every single day,” Gounardes said at a press conference held in Bay Ridge’s John Paul Jones Park at the foot of the bridge Tuesday morning. Many Brooklyn residents work or go to school on Staten Island and many have relatives who live in that borough, he said.

At $19, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is the most expensive crossing in the U.S. The new toll went into effect on March 31. The previous toll was $17.

The bridge operates via a one-way toll system. Drivers pay traveling to Staten Island. Motorists traveling toward Brooklyn drive into the borough for free.

Gounardes, a Democrat who represents Bay Ridge and several other Southwest Brooklyn neighborhoods, is the main sponsor of the legislation.

bridge, is the co-sponsor.

Assemblymember Mathylde Frontus is sponsoring the bill in the State Assembly.

Gounardes, Savino and Frontus were joined at the press conference by Councilmember Justin Brannan, a Democrat representing Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and parts of Bensonhurst and Gravesend.

Brannan agreed that Brooklyn residents deserve a discount. “The last time I checked, the bridge has two sides,” he said.

“We’re talking about fairness and equity,” Frontus added.

Under the current system, drivers coming from both boroughs get an EZPass discount. With E-ZPass, the rate comes down from $19 to $12.24 for

Brooklynites.

However, Staten Islanders with E-ZPass pay $5.50 per trip. Those who reside on Staten Island and do not have E-ZPass but use the MTA’s E-Token pay $9.80.

Gounardes’ plan would work like this: Drivers would first have to register for the discount program. Then, on a driver’s 10th trip over the bridge within a month, the discount would kick in and the motorist would receive a credit on their bill. It would work whether drivers use E-ZPass or are billed through license plate cameras.

The proposal is designed to help Brooklynites who frequently travel across the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to go to work or school on Staten Island, Savino said. “We’re not talking about people who go once a month to the mall.”

Gounardes didn’t offer an estimate on the number of people who stand to benefit from the discount. “It would be open to all Kings County residents,” he said.

Savino is confident that the MTA can absorb the cost. “We’re not bankrupting the system,” she said.

There have been previous attempts to give Brooklyn drivers a break on the tolls, which have failed. In 2018, the State Senate went so far as to pass a bill sponsored by then-senator Marty Golden that would have given Brooklyn residents a discount for making three or more trips. The Assembly did not pass the bill.

Gounardes described his bill as “targeted and focused” on people who use the bridge on a frequent basis.

MTA spokesperson Christopher McKniff said that the agency did not want to comment on pending legislation.

Q: What is your solution for fixing the MTA, especially in regard to the R train?

Rose: When you look at something like congestion pricing the issue is two-fold: One is that there can be a lot of this additional money into the system and we can still continue to get ripped off and ignored.

In all of these community nightmares is the consequence of human decisions. It’s a consequence of human decisions that Staten Island doesn’t have a subway; it’s a consequence of human decisions that the R train is amongst the longest in the city in terms of being the slowest.

It’s a consequence of human decision that we’re going to be one of the last places to get our (train) signals up there.

So what I think we have to do is make sure that we are amongst the loudest in the room at all levels of government, with city and state and federal elected officials pushing and pushing and pushing to say, “Look, you put us at the back of the line for decades, now you reverse it. Now we’re at the front, the first to get our signals up there, the first to get more buses, the first to get another bus depot built.”

People really are in pain.

We have an issue where we talked about bifurcating the R train and I’m going to stay on top of them.

Q: So the R train should go to Court Street?

Rose: No, I think it should go to Canal. If you take the R train past Canal you’re probably just going for a joyride. Man arrested for slashing wife and daughter, setting family’s Sunset Park apartment ablaze

Cops say a Sunset Park man stabbed his wife and daughter Friday before setting fire to their family apartment.

A

man was arrested Friday after authorities say he stabbed his wife and daughter and then himself, before setting fire to the family’s Sunset Park home.

Cops say that at around 3:42 p.m. on April 12, 65-year-old Ismael Alvarez entered his apartment near 42nd Street and Fourth Avenue and got

into an argument with his 63-year-old wife. Authorities say he then stabbed his spouse in the finger and slashed his 45-year-old daughter’s shoulders.

Alvarez then allegedly stabbed himself in the stomach and set the apartment ablaze.

Officers forced their way into the apartment and removed the two victims and suspect.

FDNY promptly responded and put out the fire.

Alvarez was charged with two counts of assault, two counts of arson, two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of criminal mischief, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of menacing.

The suspect was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn and is listed in stable condition. His wife and daughter were taken to Maimonides Medical Center and are also listed in stable condition.

According to authorities, at around 2:45 p.m. on March 28, two men approached a 55-year-old delivery man who was making a delivery near 89th Street and Ridge Boulevard and told him they were the customers that ordered the food.

One of the perps allegedly grabbed the bag with the food inside and told the victim they weren’t going to pay for it. The second then hopped on the man’s bike while the first told the delivery man they were going to take his ride. The first perp then simulated a weapon in his pants pocket, police said.

Both perps then got on the bike and fled westbound on 89th Street.

The suspects were caught on camera taking the wheels on a joyride — and then wiping out — before getting away.

Police describe the first suspect as a Hispanic man in his twenties. He was last seen wearing a green hooded sweater, gray sweatpants and black sneakers. The second suspect is also said to be a Hispanic man in his twenties. He was last seen wearing a dark colored baseball cap, a blue hooded sweater, a blue hooded jacket, black sweatpants and black sneakers.

MYSTERY WITHDRAWAL: A 64-year-old man is out $4,000, after an unknown perp raided his checking account, using an ATM at a bank at Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue, on April 8, at around 3:35 p.m. Cops say the victim told them he was in possession of his bank card the entire time. No arrests have been made.

CAR BREAK-IN: A car parked on 84th Street between Fifth Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway was broken into by an unknown perp who stole $775 in cash from the vehicle on April 10. The victim, a 49-year-old man, noticed the theft at around 6:35 a.m. There was no sign of forced entry. No arrests have been made.

POLICE BUST MAN FOR ALLEGED POSSESSION OF DRUGS: A 30-yearold man was arrested at Shore Road and Fourth Avenue and charged with being in possession of a controlled substance on April 11 at around 3:50 p.m.

Cops nabbed the suspect, who was in the driver’s seat of a car that had been parked inside a crosswalk, when he failed to signal as he pulled out. When cops approached the victim, they smelled marijuana inside the car. Further investigation allegedly revealed that the suspect was in possession of 13 whole and 6 partial Alprazolam pills.

MISSING CARD: After making a delivery of $13,000 worth of construction materials to a man in the Bronx on April 11, a building supply company located near 65th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway discovered that the credit card used to purchase the material had been stolen. This was the third time a stolen card had been used to purchase supplies from the company. No arrests have been made.

WOMAN ATTACKED, ROBBED INSIDE BODEGA: An 18-year-old woman was attacked and robbed by a man and woman while inside a bodega near Kings Highway and Dahill Road on April 14. According to reports, at around 3:10 p.m., the victim was walking with her boyfriend when she noticed the two crooks. She went into the bodega and called the police. The victim was then pushed by the attackers and was kicked once on the floor. They took her phone and fled the scene in an unknown direction in a gray Toyota. No arrests have been made.

GOING DOWN: A 22-year-old man was robbed after getting out of the elevator at the Bay Parkway and 86th Street D train station on April 11 at around 9:47 a.m. Cops say the victim was inside the elevator when a 40-year-man approached him holding scissors in his left hand and asking for money. When the victim got out of the elevator, the perp followed him onto the northbound D train, still holding the scissors, and again demanded money. The victim gave $20 to the suspect, who got off at 18th Avenue.

No arrests have been made.

WOMAN BUSTED FOR ATTACKING VICTIM IN BODEGA: A 26-year-old woman was arrested for

allegedly assaulting a 42-year-old woman inside a bodega at the corner of Avenue O and West Seventh Street on April 12 at around 11:30 p.m. Cops say the victim told them that the suspect, whom her husband knew, got out of her car, and then allegedly attacked her with an unknown object for no reason, striking her in the head with it several times.

The victim was taken to Coney Island Hospital for treatment.

MOVING DAY: Two unknown crooks broke into a moving equipment and rental storage company near New Utrecht Avenue and 66th Street on April 12 and stole a truck. At around 1 a.m., cops say, the crooks entered the facility's lot, broke open the lock box which contained the keys to the vehicle, and took them. They then got into the vehicle and drove off. No arrests have been made.

PRANK CALL: A 32-year-old woman who lives on 82nd Street between 18th and 19th Avenues was scammed out of nearly $3,000 on April 12 by an unknown crook who called her at around 11 a.m., told her that someone had purchased property under her name and that she needed to pay $3,000 or be arrested. The woman then bought approximately $2,560 worth of gift cards and sent them to the unknown perp. No arrests have been made.

Beyond at Liberty and Industry City team up for second annual Easter Bunny Hop

Beyond at Liberty View collaborated with Industry City on Saturday, April 13 for the duo’s second annual Easter Bunny Hop event, which drew families to the two complexes for a bevy of holiday-centric activities for the holiday, such as an Easter egg hunt and a photo op with the Easter Bunny.

Bari Fagan, the director of brand integration, video, and promotions for Bed Bath & Beyond, was happy with the turnout. Over 2,000 children showed up, according to Fagan.

“We were thrilled to be able to host our second annual Easter Bunny Hop this past Saturday,” she said. “We had a wonderful turnout of parents, grandparents and children of all ages who came to celebrate Easter, take their picture with the Easter Bunny and join in the bunny hop Easter egg hunt.

“Beyond at Liberty View is happy that we are able to offer the community and our neighbors a truly safe and family friendly day,” she went on, adding that, this year, the event had beautiful weather.

Parent Child Relationship, a group formed by Asian-American parents in Dyker Heights to maintain Leif Ericson Park, hosted its Third Annual Easter Egg Hunt in the park on April 14, attracting large numbers of children all eager to look for the treasured eggs.

Parent Child Relationship, also known as PC Relationship, has rapidly been gaining notice for its work to improve Leif Ericson Park. The group won the Golden Trowel Award from Partnership for Parks at a ceremony last month honoring volunteer organizations.

“We wanted to start the group because we believe cleaning a park can deepen the connection between parents and their children.

Parents have told us that their kids no longer play video games. They want to go to the park,” group member Iris Ng told this

BY JAN GROOVER Jan Groover created her famous Kitchen Still Lifes in 1978 and 1979. Using a large-format camera, she transformed colanders, knives, spatulas and baking pans into objects of beauty that still hold a visual interest that transcends their common use. Her seductively modern color palette of greens, pewter, bronze and brown tonalities permeates the space dissected by kitchen paraphernalia. These take on a new visual meaning as a result of Groover’s juxtaposition of the elements. Although never unrecognizable as everyday objects, these utensils float into an abstract amalgam of planes and shapes.

Women’s eye health tips

t is easy to take vision for granted.

However, it’s important for everyone to pay attention to their eye health. During April, Lighthouse Guild, the leading organization for vision and health, is sharing valuable information about women’s eye health and safety.

Dr. Susan Weinstein, low vision optometrist at Lighthouse Guild, says, “The most important step every woman can take to protect her eye health is to get regular, comprehensive, dilated eye exams. If you notice any sudden changes in your vision, you should seek care immediately.”

Weinstein offers some pointers to help women take care of their eyes: •Eye Disease Is More Common in Women. Studies have shown that women are at increased risk for glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. These disorders can lead to vision loss if left unchecked. The good news is they may be effectively treated if detected early.

•Pregnancy. Physiological changes during pregnancy can impact vision, leading to a change in prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses. These changes are usually temporary and return to normal after pregnancy.

•Menopause. With aging, vision change is common. For women, the fluctuations in hormones during and after menopause can cause dry eye. Common eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration all increase with age.

•Dry Eye. Medications, hormonal changes and aging can lead to dry eye. Artificial tears, purchased over-the-counter, or

prescription eye drops may be recommended. Antihistamine drops used for allergy relief should not be used to address dry eye.

•Let Eyes Breathe. After a busy day or a night out, resist the temptation to go to sleep wearing contact lenses. Sleeping in contact lenses is never a good idea. Daily disposable contact lenses need to be thrown out every day. Other types of disposable contact lenses should be cleaned every night.

•Wear Protective Eye Gear. Help safeguard your eyes from dirt, debris and trauma by wearing eye protection when playing sports, making repairs or engaging in work that could lead to eye injury.

•Get UV-protected sunglasses. Tinted glasses will not necessarily protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays. It is essential to get proper quality eyewear that provides both UVA and UVB coverage to protect your eyes.

•Watch the Mascara Wand. Avoid applying makeup, such as eyeliner, foundation or cover-up, so close to the eyes that it gets into your eye. Such contact with makeup can cause blurry vision and lead to irritation.

Avoid applying mascara while driving or in moving vehicles – the mascara wand could hit the eye, damaging the cornea and impacting vision years later.

•Makeup Allergies. If eyes become irritated, it could be due to certain preservatives or other substances in makeup products.

Stop using the product that appears to be causing the irritation and try a different formula. Again, if a reaction develops, see an eye care professional.

QUINOA SALAD WITH GREENS INGREDIENTS FOR THE DRESSING: • 2 scallions, minced (white and light green parts only) • 1 large ripe avocado, flesh only • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 1 to 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 2 to 4 tablespoons of water • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 cup fresh basil, chopped • 1/3 cup fresh parsley, chopped • Kosher salt to taste

FOR THE SALAD: • 1 cup dry quinoa • 3 cups mixed greens (spinach, arugula, chard) • 1 cup cooked edamame • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped • 4 radishes, thinly sliced • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes • Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS 1. Create the dressing by adding all ingredients into a food processor and processing until smooth. If necessary, add water or oil to thin.

2. First rinse the quinoa in a strainer under cool running water. Next, add it into a saucepan with two cups of water. Bring that to a boil. Cover and reduce heat. Cook until quinoa has absorbed all of the liquid (around 12 to 15 minutes).

3. With the quinoa is still warm, toss with mixed greens until leaves wilt down a bit. Stir remaining ingredients: edamame, walnuts, radishes, crushed red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Drizzle in your homemade dressing. Serve warm and enjoy!

It rises like a mirage on Central Avenue, a fantasy version of American Southwest architecture in Spanish Colonial times.

Its 175-foot bell towers are pale white like confectioner’s sugar. So are the terra-cotta sculptures of Jesus and winged angels above the front door. The rest of the building is golden brick that catches the afternoon sunlight.

This is St. Barbara’s Roman Catholic Church, Bushwick’s most eye-popping city landmark.

Scaffolding obscured the facade for years. Now the towers’ exteriors have been renovated. They look so beautiful.

Helmle & Huberty, a distinguished Brooklyn architecture firm of yesteryear, designed the century-old church, whose address is 138 Bleecker St. Landmark designation was proposed in 1980, then postponed and postponed and postponed. The city Landmarks Preservation Commission revisited the issue a couple years ago when it made a herculean effort to clear a backlog of 95 designation proposals that had sat on its calendar, some for a half-century.

The commission voted to designate St. Barbara’s as an individual landmark in December 2016.

It’s worth a visit to Bushwick just to see this Spanish Colonial Revival-style church.

But in fact there are numerous city landmarks in this funky hipster-and-Hispanic neighborhood if you know where to look for them — enough to make a spring stroll worth your while.

I’ve made this checklist for you to pull up on your phone when you’re taking your walk.

DOERING-BOHACK HOUSE Nothing else in Bushwick looks like this building. The standalone 1880s wood frame mansion at 1090 Greene Ave. reminds me of a farmhouse — if the farmer was rich and had a taste for neo-Grec and Queen Anne-style architecture.

Prominent Brooklyn architect Theobald Engelhardt designed Doering-Bohack House. One of the people who lived there over the years was Henry Bohack, who owned a chain of grocery stores that was named after him.

The buttery-yellow clapboard house on the corner of Greene Avenue and Goodwin Place was renovated a couple years ago.

It looks terrific. Daffodils were blooming in the yard the day I strolled over to see it.

CATHERINA LIPSIUS HOUSE This is a brewer’s mansion to be reckoned with.

The red-brick house at 670 Bushwick Ave. has a round turret

with a pointy roof on one corner of it. On a dark and stormy night, it would be a suitable setting for a spooky Halloween film.

Catherina Lipsius, who owned a brewery with her family, commissioned the American Round-Arched style house in the late 1880s. Architect Theobald Engelhardt designed this home, too.

THE BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY’S DEKALB BRANCH The flowering trees on the lawn are stunning this time of year.

And what a beautiful building.

The borough of Brooklyn will forever be thankful for funding that philanthropist Andrew Carnegie provided for 20 libraries at the very beginning of the 20th century.

If you know your public buildings, you recognize Carnegie libraries the moment you see them. They are stand-alone buildings made of brick and limestone on corner lots. Their architectural style is Classical Revival.

The DeKalb Branch at 790 Bushwick Ave. is one of the Carnegie libraries. A 2004 designation report the city Landmarks Preservation Commission wrote about this branch says William Tubby was the architect. This library was built in 1905.

Eye on REAL ESTATE The one at 617 Central Ave. is really something.

Engine Company 252, which was built in 1896 and 1897, is a Flemish Revival-style design. It is made of brick, red sandstone and terra-cotta.

The architects were the Parfitt Brothers, who were a powerhouse Brooklyn firm in that era.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s 1995 designation report says it is “one of the finest firehouses ever erected in Brooklyn.”

THE REFORMED CHURCH OF SOUTH BUSHWICK

This Greek Revival-style wood frame church at 855 Bushwick Ave. was built in the early 1850s, but its steeple harkens back to 17th-century London.

I’m not knowledgeable enough about ecclesiastical architecture to know things like this. But the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the Reformed Church of South Bushwick, which was written in 1968, says steeples with octagonal belfries and octagonal spires populated London’s skyline after the Great Fire of 1666.

Christopher Wren designed churches with these signature steeples to replace houses of worship that the conflagration destroyed.

PETER P. AND ROSA M. HUBERTY HOUSE

William Tubby, the DeKalb Branch’s architect, designed a fabulous Romanesque Revival-style police station at 179 Wilson Ave. that was built in 1894 and 1895.

The 83rd Precinct Police Station and Stable has a corner tower and looks like a fantasy castle.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s 1977 designation report told me something I did not know about Bushwick, which was heavily populated by German immigrants at the end of the 19th century. It’s that Wilson Avenue was originally called Hamburg Avenue, which of course is the name of a city in Germany.

The avenue was rechristened in honor of President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, after World War I ended, the report said.

PUBLIC SCHOOL 86 When Brooklyn was an independent city, Irish immigrant James Naughton was its Board of Education’s Superintendent of Buildings. This meant he was the architect who designed Brooklyn’s public schools.

One of his Bushwick designs is a designated city landmark — Public School 86 at 220 Irving Ave. The brick and stone schoolhouse was constructed in 1892 and 1893. Its architectural style is Romanesque Revival.

It is laid out in the shape of the letter “I,” the 1991 designation report about it says.

What a wonderful son.

Ulrich Huberty, an architect who did great things in Brooklyn before he died tragically at age 33, designed the house at 1019 Bushwick Ave. for his parents.

It’s Colonial Revival in style and has smart touches like a widow’s walk. It was built in 1900, an auspicious year at the dawn of a new century.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s 2017 designation report about the handsome home says typhoid fever killed Huberty. He was so young.

Huberty was the co-founder of Helmle & Huberty, the architecture firm that designed St. Barbara’s.

RIDGEWOOD MASONIC TEMPLE This Masons’ lodge has been converted to an apartment building — and it looks pretty great.

Architecture firm Koch & Wagner designed the Ridgewood Masonic Temple at 1054 Bushwick Ave. It was built in 1919 and 1920. The low-rise building, which is made of buff-colored brick and rusticated stone, was designated as a city landmark in 2014.

Look at those multistory arched windows above the front entrance. So dignified and restrained. Don’t you love Bushwick Avenue?

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from April 16, 1953 ON APRIL 16, 1878, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The remains of the late William M. Tweed will probably be buried on Wednesday next in Green-Wood Cemetery.

Public attention has been directed to a rule of the cemetery which provides that ‘no person shall be interred therein who shall have died in any prison or shall have been executed for any crime.’ The question as to whether this rule would be enforced in the case of Tweed has occasioned considerable speculation.”  ON APRIL 16, 1936, the Eagle reported, “With 865 new cases reported, measles continued to spread in Brooklyn during the week ending Saturday, according to a report issued today by Dr. John L. Rice, Commissioner of Health.

As isolation prevents the spread of measles, the report urges that children exposed to the disease be put to bed and kept away from other children, and that a doctor be consulted.

Diphtheria continued prevalent in the borough, 15 new cases having been reported last week. The report points out that this disease remains until about June and advocates immediate immunization of every child under the age of six years.”  ON APRIL 16, 1953, the Eagle reported, “Washington, April 16 (UP) — President [Dwight] Eisenhower challenged Russia’s new leaders today to prove their will for peace by ending the Korean War, lifting the Iron Curtain from satellite countries and joining a world disarmament pact that would outlaw atomic weapons. He seized the diplomatic initiative from the Communists in a major foreign policy speech listing specific ‘deeds’ the Russians can perform to demonstrate the sincerity of their recent peace talk. He said the death of Soviet Premier Josef Stalin has given his Kremlin successors ‘a precious chance to turn the black tide of events’ sweeping the world toward atomic war, but warned that ‘we do not yet know’ whether they mean to do it.”

ANGER MANAGEMENT

t appears the anger management courses Brooklyn Democratic state Sen. Kevin Parker underwent a few months ago failed to curb his tendencies to fly out of control and become physically threatening.

Late last year, Parker on his social media account encouraged the spokesperson for the Senate Republicans to commit suicide. In the wake of bipartisan outrage, he agreed to take an anger management course and initially apologized for his inappropriate tweet. A week or two later, he withdrew his apology, but did I am told go forward with an effort to address his anger issues — issues that have come up off and on over the years.

In fact, several years back, local state Sen. Diane Savino was on the receiving end of his menacing behavior in a private Democratic Senate conference. The argument became so heated that

several Senate sergeants at arms who in their official capacity have the authority to detain needed to be called into the room.

Last week, Parker was at it again with what observers described as a loud and angry outburst against freshman state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi over her public statements that she was dissatisfied with some members over their role in a heavily criticized budget process.

Biaggi, the granddaughter of legendary Rep. and police officer Mario Biaggi, grew up in the rough-and-tumble world of Bronx politics and had no interest in backing off.

Parker, as the disagreement escalated, apparently became more aggressive and, in the words of some, menacing.

Now, questions have arisen relating to the earlier incident and the failure of the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate. As if there

was not enough drama, it turns out that Biaggi is the chairperson of the Ethics Committee. Although she made a statement in the Democratic conference that would indicate that she did Parker a favor at the time, she has since denied that she provided special treatment.

Is Albany no more than a breathing, living example of the French proverb “plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose“ (“the more things change, the more they stay the same”)?

After spending a 40-year career working in the state legislature, I have seen more than a few instances that would make me think that is the case.

Of course, I do not claim to be non-partisan. Yet, I think it is clear that several different actions need to be taken immediately with the hope that they will send a more permanent message.

n today’s polarized political landscape, we seldom see major legislation sail through with bipartisan support, especially not when it will fundamentally alter the status quo. And yet that is what happened on January 14 of this year.

On the second full day of the new legislative session in Albany, a comprehensive package of voting reforms was passed. Some of the floor votes had final tallies of 44-17 and 56-5. After years of attempting to advance bills to revamp New York’s antiquated election laws, Democrats put forth a comprehensive slate of changes and, in large part, both sides worked together to enact them into law.

These weren’t controversial proposals. They have had widespread support across all political

affiliations and have been proven to be effective in other states. Citizens of the Empire State deserve to have elections that are accessible, efficient and equitable.

Rather than being one of only 12 states in the nation without early voting, busy New Yorkers will now have the option of visiting their polling site to cast their ballots on not just one day, but instead on one of 10, including two full weekends.

For a state with some of the worst voter turnout numbers in the country, who wouldn’t want to shift to a system that has been proven to engage more citizens to participate in one of our most important rights?

Whereas we were the only state last year to hold our federal and state primaries on different days — months

apart no less — we will now enjoy having them on a single day. Who could argue with scrapping a process that confused voters, depressed turnout and cost the state millions of dollars unnecessarily?

For a state with some of the worst voter turnout numbers in the country, who wouldn’t want to shift to a system that has been proven to engage more citizens to participate in one of our most important rights?

New Yorkers who moved within the state would often find out on election day that since they hadn’t submitted a voter registration form with their new address at least 20 days in advance, they wouldn’t be allowed to

Of course, inasmuch as the most recent incident involved her, it would not make sense for her to be looking at Parker regardless.

If Parker is shown to have crossed a formal ethical line, the Senate should impose strong penalties which should at a minimum result in a removal of his seniority, possible loss of staff and certainly a return to a new set of anger management classes.

If Biaggi is shown to have buried an ethics investigation intentionally, she should be removed from the committee, prevented from chairing any committee over the rest of this term and

possibly, depending on the nature of her intervention (she had a formal complaint which she failed to act upon), be looked at for additional sanctions.

It is worth noting that until the Democratic Party took over the Senate in 2019, the Ethics Committee was the only equal committee in the Senate — there were just as many Democrats on it as Republicans. Due to the nature of the committee, this was a longstanding tradition. The state Assembly committee still has an equal number of Democrats and Republicans.

In light of all that has happened, I think it would be logical for the Senate to reconstitute the membership of its Ethics Committee so that there are equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans.

vote. The new law that will allow every voter in this circumstance to transfer their registration easily is about as obvious a commonsense fix one can come up with.

While proposals to lower the age to vote have been met with mixed reactions, Democrats moved ahead with a voting reform that everyone can get behind.

Sixteen and 17-year-olds applying at the DMV for a driving permit or driver’s license will now be able to pre-register to vote. Once they turn 18, without any further bureaucratic processes, they’ll automatically

be able to begin participating in the process that provides us all with a say in our government.

Also passed were bills to amend the state’s Constitution to allow same-day voter registration and no-excuse absentee voting.

These measures will require the following legislature to pass them again so that the process can move forward to create constitutional amendments ensuring these rights.

It’s particularly important to keep this in mind when voting next November, as these changes will not become law until further legislative action following the 2020 election.

I’m not sure why, under Republican leadership,

these reforms went nowhere in the state Senate for years, but at this point, I don’t much care. The newly Democratic-controlled majority didn’t simply ram through legislation. They passed it with most of their Republican counterparts voting aye, as well.

There are plenty of issues those of us on either side of the political spectrum will disagree on, but there’s no reason not to work together where there is general agreement as to what will most benefit New Yorkers.

And all of our elected officials, regardless of party, can play a role in that.

We’re all on equal footing where common ground exists.

Community to rename 101st St. in memory of Greatest Generation’s Own Larry Morrish

Volunteer deeds built modern Bay Ridge

When Larry Morrish and I teamed up to create “The View from Bay Ridge” on BCAT 17 years ago, I knew we were also telling the story of one of our greatest volunteers in Morrish himself.

For more than five years we covered cleanups, restaurants and the work of other outstanding leaders like Marty Golden, Vincent Gentile, Bob Howe and Chip

Cafiero — each of whom had their own dealings with Morrish on a wide variety of community projects.

On May 18, many of us will gather at 101st Street outside Fort Hamilton Army Base with Morrish’s lovely wife Phillipa to name the street in his honor. It is an honor much deserved for one of the greatest leaders of Bay Ridge’s Greatest Generation.

OBITUARIES Zaffiro, Frank A. at the age of 97.

Born in Brooklyn to Alfredo and Maria.

Frank graduated Manual Training High School in 1940 along with his future wife Irene (nee Mauro.) The marriage would be in1948 after Frank’s service in the armed forces. He proudly served his Country in the Army stationed in the Pacific Islands during WWII. During his many years living on Union Street, Frank worked for the US Postal Service until his retirement in 1980. He then moved to Bay Ridge to enjoy his retirement with Irene, until her passing in 2006. He leaves behind his sons Alfred (Priscilla) and Frank (Grace) His grandsons Christopher and Gregory; and his four great grandchildren.

Frank left us on April 11, 2019 to join his beloved Irene.

+++ MCGLOIN, Catherine A. — 94, passed away on April 15 at Center of Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

Catherine resided in Brooklyn for 85 years before moving to Fanwood, New Jersey.

She was the youngest child of Catherine and Dennis Callahan and beloved sister of John Dougherty, George Doherty and Michael Callahan. Kay attended Girl’s Commercial High School and became a switchboard operator. She met the love of her life, James McGloin, her husband of 50 years, on the Brooklyn Manhattan transit and they married shortly thereafter. The young couple bought a rowhouse in Marine Park where they raised their two beautiful and talented daughters, Catherine and Alice. Kay was a devoted Roman Catholic, active in parish affairs and the rosary society, serving as president. Kay worked as a retail supervisor at Abraham & Strauss and Alexander’s. Her most cherished role in life was “Nana” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Kay will be remembered for her uncanny ability to choose the perfect Hallmark card (from her extensive

collection) for any and all occasions for family, neighbors, friends and pets, always signing them with love and prayers. She was a beautiful, intelligent and wonderful woman with striking red hair (#108) and all of the cousins and their children treasured the time they spent in her kitchen and her warm hospitality.

Survivors include her daughters Catherine and husband, Richard Kujawa of Westfield, New Jersey, and Alice and husband, Michael Lilly of Baltimore, Maryland; grandchildren Richard, Catherine, Anne and Dennis; and great-grandchildren Dillon, Catherine, Karissa, Emily, Aidan, Ryan and Nathan. Reposing April 20 from 1-4 p.m. and April 21 from 3-7 p.m. at Marine Park Funeral Home, 3024 Quentin Road. Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m. on April 22 at Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. The last straw: Mayor signs executive order limiting single-use plastics

ith an eye on global warming a nd c a rb on emissions, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed an executive order on Thursday to end the city’s purchase of single-use plastic items.

The city has 120 days from the signing to come up with a plan, and the order is expected to be fully implemented by the end of the year.

The mayor held up straws, plates and cutlery made of alternative materials, such as paper and cornstarch, showing the crowd at the press conference what the replacements for plastic will look like. Speaking at Sims Municipal Recycling in Sunset Park, he labeled the current situation a crisis.

The Department of Sanitation collects 36 million pounds of single-use plastic foodware every year, he said.

“That’s unacceptable and something we can’t afford to do,” de Blasio contended.

“Today we say no to plastics, we say no to fossil fuels. We say yes to a better and fairer future.”

The order will rapidly reduce city government’s use of single-use plastic foodware by 95 percent, he said.

“One ounce of plastic creates one ounce of carbon dioxide,” de Blasio said.

“Every time we purchase something plastic, we are taking a step in the wrong direction.”

De Blasio added that he and his administration are working with the City Council to take the next step and pass legislation to expand the effort to the private sector. He expects that legislation to pass by the end of this year.

“We not only need to stop using plastic foodware as the city government,” he said. “We need to get it out of restaurants and stores.

We need to get it out of our lives, and we will work with the City Council to get that done.”
