NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSBEAT New Taqueria Inspired by Mexico City Comes to Downtown Brooklyn DOWNTOWN BROKLYN — Craving some guacamole, tacos or even house-made churros? If so, it’s time to check out Downtown Brooklyn’s newest Mexican restaurant, Taqueria, located at 25 Bond St. at Livingston Street. Food writer Harris Salat and chef Rick Horikke gained inspiration for their new eatery after visits to Mexico City, according to Eater. Neither Salat nor Horikke are of Mexican descent, but Taqueria seeks to “cook faithful versions of these classic tacos,” as stated by the restaurant owners. Salat is a Japanese cuisine connoisseur and Horrikke has worked at Morimoto and Nobu, but the two were so moved by the taco stands and stalls from Mexico City that they wanted to bring it back to Brooklyn. Having collaborated together before at Ganso eateries, the two developed Taqueria’s menu offering options such as pollo asado, stuffed poblano peppers and rajas con papas. The dinner menu also has two vegetarian options and the establishment plans to serve lunch and brunch in the near future.

If these choices sound delectable, experience a taste of Mexico City and head on over to the Downtown Brooklyn spot, where prices start at $9 for two tacos.

Greenpoint Makes a Serious Push To Become a Foodie Destination GREENPOINT — With some recent delicious additions, Greenpoint could outshine Williamsburg as a cuisine center. The former industrial hub has transformed into a cheaper substitute for foodies. According to an article by The New York Times, Greenpoint has opened quite a few new restaurants this year, namely Di An Di, famous for pho; Bernie’s, a stylish diner; Annicka, a farm brewery restaurant with New Yorkmade drinks; and Oxomoco, a Mexican restaurant with an aerial atmosphere.

There are even more dining

options planned for the fall, like Alula, a Middle Eastern cafe; Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop, a flagship restaurant; and Ovenly Studio One54, a bakery. Greenpoint mirrors almost the exact luxuries that Williamsburg does: a myriad of stores, restaurants and apartments that are close to Manhattan, and scenic views of the water. Yet, Greenpoint is still unique in its appeal. Nick Padilla, chef and owner of the Palace, commented on the area, telling The Times that “because [Greenpoint] is so disconnected, it has this small-town charm.”

80 Flatbush Called ‘Best-Case Scenario’ for Borough’s Housing Needs DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — If its current rate of growth continues, Brooklyn will be more populous than the city of Chicago. This means more housing is needed. But even though new construction is under way, it won’t be enough to meet the needs of 144,000 new Kings County residents since 2010, according to Alexandra Lange of Curbed. Lange believes the proposed 80 Flatbush development, which would include two high-rise towers, is the “best-case scenario” for private-sector housing development. “It bills high-quality design, excellent public transit options and a desirable neighborhood as amenities for the public good,” she says. However, there are those who disagree, Curbed reported. One of these is Councilmember Stephen Levin, who says he would only vote “yes” when the project comes before the City Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises if the developer, Alloy Development, reduces its density by one-third, making it equal to Downtown Brooklyn’s other towers. Lange retorts that Alloy’s previous success in DUMBO with its One John Street condo building proves that the firm has “the ability to make something that solves urban problems and has architectural personality and quality.”

Four Brooklyn Women Design LeBron James’s Newest Shoe BOROUGHWIDE — LeBron James’s first women’s basketball shoe sold out within five minutes of its release. The HFR x LeBron 16, the newest shoe in the legendary athlete’s arsenal, made its first appearance on Sept. 4 and was officially released on Sept. 7, selling out almost instantaneously. But the victory wasn’t LeBron’s alone. The shoe was co-designed by four Brooklyn women: Brandice Daniel, Kimberly Goldson, Undra Duncan and Fe Noel. The HFR x LeBron (and its supplementary campaign, “The Strongest”) was created to celebrate women of color, especially black women, reports Forbes, and James knew he wanted black women to design it. Daniel, of Harlem Fashion Row; Goldson, an alum of “Project Runway;” and Duncan and Noel, contemporary lifestyle designers, created a shoe that revolves around four themes: strength, dignity, courage, and loyalty. These four words can be found on the sole of the sneaker.

Brooklyn Center for the Arts Closes, Fires Entire Full-Time Staff FLATBUSH — In a shocking and unanticipated move, Brooklyn Center for Performing Arts at Brooklyn College shut down earlier this month, leaving all of its full-time employees without jobs. Although the college cited budgetary reasons and construction delays in its decision, the closure came as a complete surprise to the staff.

The full-time employees, four in total, were all “terminated immediately,” a source told Bklyner. Four other staff members were placed in parttime jobs at the new Leonard

& Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts, now receiving one-quarter of their previous pay.

The center, known for its past 64 years of operation as The Brooklyn Center for the Arts, only started operating under the umbrella of Brooklyn College this past July — a transition that didn’t go all too smoothly, according to a source who told Bklyner, “In 64 years, we made it through the Vietnam war, the Great Recession, but couldn’t survive 64 days after becoming a part of the college.”

Cops Busted for Protecting Crime Ring in Queens and Brooklyn BOROUGHWIDE — Seven New York City police officers were arrested last Wednesday on charges of prostitution, corruption and misconduct. The three-year investigation into an illegal gambling and prostitution ring in Brooklyn and Queens began with an anonymous officer’s tip to internal affairs and ended with seven officers arrested, two placed on administrative duty, and more than 40 civilians either in custody or being sought out in connection to the investigation, according to The New York Times. The arrested officers allegedly provided protection for the ring’s activities, especially at brothels located in Sunset Park in Brooklyn and on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens. Arrest rates for prostitution offenses are currently higher in these two boroughs than anywhere else in the city, reports the Times.

Greenpoint Church to Be Converted to Single-Family Home GREENPOINT — The long-vacant St. Elias Church building at 145 Kent St. in Greenpoint will soon be converted into a single-family home, Department of Building filings reveal. The new three-story residence, which will include more than 13,800 square feet, will be outfitted with new stairs, a renovated kitchen, new interior partition and new equipment, the Greenpoint Post reported. The project will also

reportedly include a former Sunday school building at 149 Kent St. Since the building is landmarked, the developer must also receive approvals from the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, the Post said.

The project is being managed by Hirsch Enterprises, a real estate firm with experience in converting houses of worship and landmarked nonresidential buildings to homes.

Miss America 2019 Thanks Brooklyn for Her Win CLINTON HILL — Nia Imani Franklin, the Clinton Hill resident who was crowned Miss America on Sunday, says living in Brooklyn gave her the edge she needed to win the competition. “Living here has given me even more of a grit and sense of self,” Franklin told ABC. “I’m really excited about that, and I think that’s what’s going to help me have a wonderful year as Miss America.” Franklin, previously crowned Miss New York, is the first Miss America to have won the pageant since it eliminated its swimsuit competition, a move spearheaded by former Miss America Gretchen Carlson. Franklin told ABC the swimsuit portion was “not really missed,” and that its absence helped her “focus more on what I wanted the world to know.” A classically trained composer and singer, she performed part of an opera in the talent portion of the competition.

Some School Drinking Fountains, Faucets Still Have High Lead Levels CITYWIDE — While the city Department of Education has made progress in eliminating lead in school drinking fountains and faucets, more than 1,100 such fixtures still have lead levels greater than the 15 ppb threshold that the EPA allows. Of the 142,411 water fixtures, which include drinking fountains, bathroom faucets and sinks used for cooking or washing dishes, 12,457 tested positive for high levels of lead in 2016 and 2017, according to The New York Times.

Ninety-one percent of these contaminated water fixtures have been repaired, according to official figures. Of the rest, about 730 fixtures are not used for cooking or drinking and have signs saying they should be used for hand-washing only, the Times reported. The issue of high lead levels in water was brought to the forefront by the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.

Literary Lights Shine at the Brooklyn Book Festival

Pups. Picture books. Drag queens. Awesome.

Literary lights shining brightly. Doubly awesome.

This year’s Brooklyn Book Festival was fabulous. Were you there?

An estimated 6,000 people attended the festival’s Children’s Day on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Kids and their parents flocked to MetroTech Commons in Downtown Brooklyn. They listened to readings presented on the Picture Book Stage and participated in drawing and other activities.

There was a Drag Queen Story Hour followed by a drag workshop.

On Sunday, Sept. 16, which was Festival Day, bibliophiles gathered at venues throughout the Brooklyn Borough Hall area and adjacent Brooklyn Heights to hear their favorite authors speak and stretch their literary horizons.

Between 40,000 and 45,000 people showed up on Festival Day. About 300 authors from all over the world participated in panel discussions and readings.

High-profile fiction and nonfiction writers who spoke that day included Brooklyn’s own Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Egan, whose award-winning novel was “A Visit from the Goon Squad.”

Other important writers on the Festival Day roster included Martin Amis, Pete Hamill, A.M. Homes, Uzodinma Iweala, David

Cay Johnston, Min Jin Lee, Terry McMillan, Joyce Carol Oates and Luis Alberto Urrea.

Up-and-comers in the literary world took part as well.

There were 14 stages at venues including Brooklyn Borough Hall — a Greek Revival-style city-designated landmark that frequently serves as a setting for TV series and movies — as well as Brooklyn Heights locations St. Francis College, the Brooklyn Historical Society and St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church.

The Brooklyn Book Festival is New York City’s largest free literary event.

Everybody Had a Blast on Children’s Day “Mommy! Mommy! Books!” was the cry of one boy as he tugged his mother’s hand to rush her faster towards tents and tables filled with literature for children at MetroTech Commons on Sept. 15.

The weather was perfect for the Brooklyn Book Festival’s Children’s Day, which was a kids-only prelude to the grownup Festival Day that took place on Sept. 16.

Children sat rapt on little stools as

award-winning authors read to them and made corny jokes, got creative with illustrators, had their favorite books signed and attended workshops and performances.

The pre-teen crowd listened to authors give their take on middle school, struggles through life without a father and fearless women — with a dash of unicorns for good measure.

Showing why young readers are smarter than many older ones, some kids just sat crosslegged on the ground and read their new favorite books right then and there.

Therapy dog Little Dude, the star of Cara Zelas’ “Big World of Little Dude” books for children, was a hit with the kids at Children’s Day. The adorable little dog sitting in a fleecelined basket remained mellow despite being petted by countless enthusiastic Brooklyn Book Festival attendees.

Zelas, a teacher originally from Sydney, Australia, trained to be part of a therapy team with the Good Dog Foundation in order to visit hospitals and schools.

These visits evolved into a social and emotional curriculum used at schools and the New York Public Library, said Seth Ginsberg, Zelas’ husband.

The themes used in her books include courage, respect and feelings, and each story can be both read and sung.

This was Zelas and Little Dude’s second appearance at the Brooklyn Book Festival.

“And we’re just delighted,” Ginsberg said.

As the parent of a 3-year-old girl, he said, “this is touching me in the right place.”

The “Little Dude” books “are meant to put a little goodness into the world,” he added.

The epic fantasy novels in her “Broken Earth” trilogy each won science fiction writing’s distinguished Hugo Award for best novel — “The Fifth Season” in 2016, “The Obelisk Gate” in 2017 and “The Stone Sky” in 2018.

She is the only author in the history of the prestigious award to receive it three years in a row.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, another honor came Jemisin’s way: The Brooklyn Book Festival’s BoBi Award.

The acronym stands for Best of Brooklyn Inc. ‘The Addictive Quality of a Stephen King Novel’ “These books have the addictive quality of a Stephen King novel and the grit and soul-wrenching of a Toni Morrison book, all driven by incredibly intricate and brilliantly conceived story lines,” Brooklyn Literary Council Chairman Johnny Temple said at Jemisin’s awards ceremony.

And oh, yes — they’ve got humor and “utterly captivating sex scenes” in them, too, he said.

The awards ceremony took place at performing arts space Roulette in Boerum Hill.

Temple spent several days raptly reading Jemisin’s trilogy while completely neglecting his family and his work. He’s the publisher and editor-in-chief of Akashic Books, an independent publishing house.

Temple, who called Jemisin “a phenomenal writer,” said she’s the first science fiction and fantasy author to win the BoBi Award.

“We are truly fortunate to have N.K. Jemisin

bring us truth, insight and understanding in the very beautiful art she creates,” Temple said.

The BoBi Award, given annually, goes to “an author whose work best exemplifies or speaks to the spirit of Brooklyn,” the book festival’s website notes.

Past BoBi recipients include Colson Whitehead, Jacqueline Woodson, Jonathan Lethem and James McBride.

‘The Myths and Fears That Have Made Us Who We Are’ At the award ceremony on Saturday night, Jemisin said some people have erroneous ideas about science fiction because their “only exposure to this field is usually a 60-year-old TV show.”

Actually, science fiction and fantasy are about “religion and climate change and how we get health care and institutional corruption and microaggressions and resistance to oppressive, exploitative systems” — and have been “pretty much since their inception,” she said.

Growing numbers of readers are starting to realize this.

“I am pleased to say this award suggests the mainstream is finally catching up to what genre fiction has always been — stories about the myths and fears that have made us who we are and the aspirations that guide us to where we want to be,” Jemisin said.

A Look on Aging in 2018

— Abraham Joshua Henschel We live longer and longer. Most babies born today will live to be over 100. Now that we have improved infant mortality (although less than most developed countries), we need to concentrate on improving mortality at the other extreme – our elderly. The older population is getting healthier and living longer. In 2015, 14.9 percent of the US population was over 65. Not only is the longevity improving, more importantly, the longevity is getting healthier, with less neurodegenerative disease, like Alzheimer and Parkinson, less cancer and less cardiovascular disease. Today, these diseases are still considered as a normal part of aging.

In the near future, we’ll be able to compress morbidity to a very short time before our demise. Biological age will no longer follow chronological age as in the past. The goal today is to keep us functional and healthy until just very shortly before we die. Are we to become immortal? NO, we will still die, but no longer of aging. Natural disasters, accidents war and still some diseases will kill us, but aging less and less so.

In 2015 US health care costs were $3.2 trillion, amounting to 17.8 percent of GDP; in 1960 the cost was only 5 percent. We spend more money for health care than any other developed country in the world, where the cost on the average is only 9.5 percent. Compared with these countries, we also have a shorter lifespan and, especially, a higher infant mortality. As our population gets older, age related problems, like Alzheimer, Parkinson, most cancers and cardiovascular disease have become the biggest part of that expense, responsible for 85 percent of our health care costs.

Aging should no longer be considered untouchable. We can modify it, slow it, change it, delay it, maybe, even cure it. We should consider aging as a disease, possibly even a curable disease. We have currently three options for health: Obamacare, new Republican proposals, and Sanders’ proposal for universal health care ( Medicare for everybody). Most developed countries have a single payer system, including most European countries, Japan and Canada. Sanders’ approach is that health care is not a luxury, it is our right, like education, and government should take care of it. But, despite the financial mess in our health care, the US is still the leader in innovations in medical sciences, but in delivery of health care we are lagging behind many developed nations.

US supremacy in innovations in medicine should continue. One way to continue with the leading role in innovations would be that the FDA would recognize aging as a disease.

A major challenge, but, recognizing aging would change the way we practice medicine today, we would start to address the cause and not the consequences of most major diseases – the aging.

So, how can we pragmatically address aging today?

I foresee it as a four-pronged approach: First: what we can do immediately today is to promote a healthy lifestyle.

This includes healthy nutrition: one can eat almost anything one likes, but reduce the volume of food we consume, especially sugar intake (most cancers are addicted to sugar), fat is OK, mostly as mono or polyunsaturated like olive oil; drink two to three liters of water daily (a well hydrated brain functions better); adequate physical activity, at least 30 minutes daily, even simple walking is good enough; enough sleep — seven to eight hours a night, social interaction with family and friends, loners are sicker and die sooner; develop interests in hobbies or volunteerism; cultivate spirituality, pray if you are religious, meditate if you’re not. With older age we simply shift the gear, we continue to grow, learn and achieve. The spiritual maturity of the older age can more than compensate for diminished physical strength. That would bring us to over 100 years or more. The oldest known documented lifespan was Jeanne Calment, a French lady who died in 1997 at age of 122 years and 164 days.

Second: consider your body is like a house. With proper maintenance some homes can last 150 years or more, some homes in Europe have lasted for centuries. They require con-

Ciril Godec, MD stant maintenance and the occasional new roof. For humans, the possibilities include joint replacements, penile or breast implants, stimulators for brain or spinal cord, pacemakers, or transplants, like kidney, heart, liver, lung, and pancreas.

Scheduled maintenance would consist of regular check ups, mammograms, PSA, colonoscopy and other tests as needed.

Visit your family doctor once a year even if you are perfectly healthy.

Third: we will eventually start to treat older age with medication. Already today we have two drugs - Metformin and Rapamycin – that are currently undergoing clinical trials as anti-aging medications. The data on Metformin will be known by December 2018. By declaring aging as treatable disease, the pharmaceutical industry would become a major investor in the field.

Fourth: this is the most important and most promising, we must move basic science research on aging on the cellular level. Many research labs today are doing research on telomeres prolongation, cellular cleaners lysosomes, epigenomes, DNA mutations, elimination of senescent cells, stem cells administration, mitochondrial enhancement and many others. We urgently need money for basic science research on aging.

Today, aging is the biggest killer, especially in developed nations. It is finally time that we address not only the costly diseases of aging, but the true cause of all age related diseases – aging itself.

I hear you, what about overpopulation; it will not be a problem for a long time. Just sit on the train, look through the window and you’ll see vast areas of unpopulated spaces.

As we speak, in some areas around the globe, the adventuresome architects are starting to build dwellings on the ocean surfaces or in the deserts where the climate can be artificially changed. In the not so distant future, (no longer science fiction) people will build more artificial planets similar to the ones where some astronauts are already living today. No longer is this a science fiction, it is becoming a new reality lurking around the corner.

I should say a word on “happy retirement.” Indeed, for some people it can be a long awaited stage in their life. Re-

tirement is a relatively new concept in our human history, started in the late 19th and early 20th century. In the past, due to shorter life expectancy, people worked until death. Now, for some, especially if retirement is mandatory, it means the interruption of their striving to actively contribute to the world they inhabit. So, let them remain productive if they are able to contribute; in US, five percent of people >70 are still employed. On Internet, I found Wal-Mart a worker Loren Wade, who still works 32 hours a week at age of 102.

With artificial intelligence hybridizing our brain with computers and cell phones, we will be able to solve many problems that today still seem unsolvable. As electronic devices are evolving with incredible speed, so does our brain capacity. Our brain is like a muscle, the more we cultivate it, the better it gets. As my grandfather used to say, the sky is the limit. Have faith in the indomitable human spirit.

We should do this in stages, first what is already possible today: 1. Lifestyle matters: nonsmoking, prevention of obesity, healthy nutrition, physical activity, 7 to 8 hours of sleeping time, social interaction friends; religions: Buddhist, Muslim, Jew, Christian; if person has no religion, he/she should meditate. This smart lifestyle would bring us only to a certain level, at this point only to about 120 (Jeanne Calment).

2. Aging like a good car, say Rolls Royce, with proper maintenance, appropriate replacing of some parts the car can be drivable for over 100 years. Humans could do the same, some failing organs could be transplanted like kidney, liver, pancreas, lung, heart; some other organ can get implant to remain functional, like many joints, penile implant, breast implants, or some electronic devices could be implanted to improve the function like pacemaker for the heart or spinal cord. That cures organ malfunction or dysfunction, does prolong overall healthy longevity.

3. The most important for the life extension today lies in basic science, on the cellular level: telomere prolongation, lysosome activation, epigenetics, antioxidants, DNA mutations, some pharmacological agents (Metformin, Rapamycin), stem cells injection, elimination of senescent cells. Lots of research in this area is currently done around the world.

We need biological Einstein; he integrated all the latest knowledge in physics of his time into his theory or relativity.

We should do the same in aging research, we need to integrate all biological knowledge on aging into one comprehensive approach and translate it into a clinical practice thus we’ll be able to slow, delay or even cure the aging. Immortality for human: NO. We’ll still die of natural disasters, wars, accidents, suicides; but many diseases like cardiovascular, stroke, cancers, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer, Parkinson that are mostly age related will be eliminated if we prevent aging.

What about overpopulation, soon will be too many of us on this planet, the space is limited overpopulation will suffocate us. No, no problem, we already have a few astronauts living on space ships. We will create artificial planets with appropriate atmosphere and move there, extraterrestrial space is unlimited. Indeed, we’ll start to populate the universe.

Failure is just an opportunity to begin again…this time more wisely.

Currently there is FDA approved study at Albert Einstein School of the use of Metformin as an anti-aging agent; the study will finish on December 2018. Metformin acts by lowering glucose and insulin levels, and Rapamycin decreases the activity of mTOR (the mammalian target of rapamycin).

Iron promotes aging; they both lower the body’s iron stores. Keep iron at the low normal range.

Mitochondria increase production of ROS with increased aging; activity of several ROS scavenging enzymes declines with aging; mutations of mitochondrial DNA accumulates during aging. DNA repair slows down with aging; it leads to oxidative damage of nuclear DNA and impairs genes transcriptions. This is especially important in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer or Parkinson.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Introduces State-of-the-Art Patient Meal Delivery System

L

ast month NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island became the first public hospital to introduce a revolutionary new meal delivery system, when it rolled out 23 state-of-the-art food delivery carts that are equipped with a refrigerator and a low-temperature convection oven.

With this new advanced system, hot food maintains its temperature for 50 minutes while in the unit, which allows ample time for delivery from the hospital’s kitchen to patient rooms.

In addition to keeping hot foods moist, the convection oven also expands menu options over the old system.

Manufactured by Dinex, the Thermal Aire III carts are equipped with technology that ensures food reaches hospital patients at optimal temperatures and maintains its nutritious elements.

“At NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island we take pride in providing patients with healthy meals,” said Whitney Ahneman, MS, RD, CDE, clinical nutrition manager. “The Dinex system enhances patient enjoyment of

the food, and, as a result, we have seen patients become more in tune with their nutrition therapy.”

The Thermal Aire III cart and docking station system will save time and production costs, thanks to its more efficient meal delivery process. Each cart combines a convection oven for hot food at 220°F on one side and ventilated refrigerator for cold food as low as 33°F on the other side.

Even with the technology, the cart is relatively lightweight, simplifying its management. The carts are also easy to clean and sanitize, with all components readily accessible. Real-time monitoring is built into each docking station.

“The new system benefits both patients and staff,” said Dorothy Ramsay-Burton, MS, CDN, director of food and nutrition services.

“Hearing many patients express their enjoyment of the food is extremely rewarding to staff members.”

The launch at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island is the start of the second wave of implementation, which will also include NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, /Jacobi and /Kings County.

Winter Bridal How to Curtail Wedding Spending and Still Impress Guests T ying the knot can be an expensive endeavor. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed nearly 13,000 brides and grooms in the United States who got married in 2017, the average cost of a wedding was more than $33,000.

That figure may surprise some couples planning their weddings, many of whom may not be able to afford spending so much on their ceremonies and receptions.

Couples may feel pressure to compete with friends and relatives whose weddings they have attended in the past, and that may compel some to stretch their budgets and even go into debt to finance their nuptials.

However, there are ways for couples to curtail their wedding spending and impress guests at the same time.

• Trim the guest list.

The 2017 Real Weddings Study found that couples spent an average of $268 per guest in 2017. Many couples are recognizing that smaller guest lists are a great way to lower wedding spending, and the Knot study found that the average guest count decreased from 149 in 2009 to 136 in 2017.

Trimming the guest list may seem harsh, but couples who work together need not cut their guest lists in half. By working together, couples can likely find between 10 and 15 acquaintances on their initial lists who won’t be offended if they’re not invited.

Couples who spend the 2017 average per guest can save nearly $3,000 by removing just 10 people from their guest lists.

• Expand your venue horizons. A greater number of couples are looking beyond traditional wedding venues and opting for

more unique locales to tie the knot.

The 2017 Real Weddings Study found that 15 percent of 2017 weddings were held on farms, ranches and even in barns, while just two percent of weddings were hosted in such venues in 2009.

The growing popularity of unique wedding venues may make some locations more expensive than couples anticipate, but a willingness to tie the knot in a unique venue greatly increases couples’ options, improving the chances they will find more affordable venues.

• Cut back on guest entertainment. Customizing experiences for guests is a major reason why today’s couples are spending so much more per guest than their predecessors.

Spending for customized guest entertainment, which includes things like photo booths, sparklers and video booths, tripled between 2009 and 2017.

Couples may want to give their guests unique experiences, but should not stretch their budgets or go into debt to do so.

• Tie the knot in winter.

Summer and fall were the most popular wedding seasons in 2017, and that does not figure to change anytime soon.

Couples can take advantage of those trends by getting married in winter, a slow season for wedding venues and vendors, who might be more flexible with their prices.

T he most popular months to tie the knot in 2017 were September, June and October, so couples who don’t want to wed in winter but want to avoid paying top prices should avoid those three months.

Weddings are expensive, but couples can find ways to cut costs without sacrificing quality.

hould a person hear that a couple has “tied the knot,” it’s immediately known that they got married. But just when and where does the term “tying the knot” come from?

The phrase “tying the knot” is steeped in tradition, though the origins of the phrase remain open for debate.

One origin story states that tying the knot can be traced back to the Roman empire, when brides wore girdles that were tied in knots, and the groom eventually had to untie those knots to consummate the marriage.

Tying the knot also may be traced to the custom of handfasting. The marriage contract was established between a bride and a groom by joining their hands together and tying them.

Although accounts vary as to whether the hands were tied only during the ceremony or later, this is believed to be an ancient Renaissance or Celtic tradition.

Others speculate that the phrase traces its origins to Hindu weddings in which brides and grooms tied a necklace of flowers as part of wedding tradition.

Yet another theory suggests that the phrase can be traced back to the knotted string that supported beds prior to the use of metal springs. In order to make a marriage bed, couples first needed to tie the knot.

Knots also represent a difficult-to-break bond, which is why they have long been associated with marriage.

In one unity tradition, couples may braid or knot together three strands, with one representing the bride, one symbolizing the groom and the third representing God as they join together in faith.

Similarly, the phrase “getting hitched” is associated with knot-tying as well. The saying implies that two people are being tied together just like a horse is tied, or hitched, to a wagon.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Wedding Party

aking the important decision to get married can fill couples with joy and excitement as they imagine spending the rest of their lives together.

Naturally, brides and grooms-to-be are anxious to share the good news with others, and include family and friends in the festivities. One way couples exemplify inclusion is by asking their closest acquaintances to be part of their wedding parties.

Being asked to serve as a bridesmaid or groomsman is an honor. Some couples may be tempted to ask every friend, sibling or cousin they have to be in their wedding parties, and some do.

In fact, ancient Roman law required 10 witnesses to be part of the wedding ceremony. However, the larger the wedding party, the more people couples have to coordinate and the more personalities they must manage.

While large wedding parties are in style, there isn’t any one-size-fits-all formula to decide which size party is right for a particular situation. Trends vary based on geography and culture.

These tips can help couples decide on the size of their wedding parties.

• Match it to scope and style. Wedding planners may use a standard ratio for a proportion of guests to wedding party members.

That ratio is one pair of wedding attendants for every 50 guests. This creates a balanced feel where the more people in attendance — the larger the wedding party and vice versa.

• Consider your expenses. Wedding party members may be asked to spend considerable amounts of money to be in the wedding, but the couple will have certain expenses tied to the wedding party as well.

These can include limousines to ferry people between the ceremony

and reception, photography costs to arrange and photograph large wedding parties, the cost of boutonnieres and bouquets, attendants’ gifts, as well as extra mouths to feed at the rehearsal dinner.

Small wedding parties

can be easier on couples’ budgets.

• Know your expectations. Couples should discuss what they expect from their wedding parties. Do couples want their loved ones to be very hands-on or waiting in the wings? For

those who want a lot of input from their wedding parties, asking distant friends or family to be included may be impractical.

• Select reliable, easy-going people. Wedding party members should be people couples can rely on, and it

only helps if wedding party members are not prone to overreacting. Choose a wedding party that can be trusted and people with whom you get along.

Select artists reinterpret flags associated with OSH’s history as the site of the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn, to consider how their values are being upheld today.

Others envision bold new flags for contemporary local and global communities.

Artifacts, archival materials, video, and first-hand interviews, come together to share the stories of the people who skated at Empire during the 70s and 80s and will immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of the rink. Through the examined histories of and around Empire, connections between roller skating and larger narratives of race, class, and urbanization in America are uncovered.

Where: DUMBO/Minus Space (16A Main Street) QUIETER PLACES Marshall LaCount’s Quieter Places paintings are a collective approach to places quieter than the city; quieter than a mind treading in traumas; quieter than political despondency.

These Quieter Places are beyond certain borders.

They are elsewhere, for they are not places, they are images. In this case, they are images constructed by aching hands and sore arms which have managed to pull away from other work, made in less quiet places.

Plaster is shaped alongside acrylic paint, wallboard, spray paint. Graffiti and the constant buffing of graffiti get a nod. The works are playful: primary colors occupy measured spaces in largely white fields of textured plaster. This play is a renegotiating of borders.

THE EMPEROR The Emperor, Colin Teevan‘s adaptation of Ryszard Kapuściński‘s celebrated and controversial 1978 book of the same title, is a parable about power set at the downfall of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie. Kathryn Hunter astonishingly shapeshifts, portraying ten male servants of Haile Selassie, among them his pillow-bearer, purse-bearer and dog-urine wiper, creating complex human portraits. Once a popular beach resort overlooking Jamaica Bay, Canarsie has become known as a stable middleclass neighborhood filled with suburban life. Tucked away to the east, the land remained rural longer than most Brooklyn neighborhoods before developers eventually realized its potential.

Originally part of the Dutch town of Flatlands, the land was named after the Native Americans living there, the Canarsees. The entire area remained quiet until the late 1880s with fishermen casting into Jamaica Bay and farmers harvesting the soil.

Its period of growth began in the 1860s when the Brooklyn and Rockaway Beach Railroad was built, drawing visitors to the shore and soon-to-be area of a resort.

Hotels popped up and beer gardens followed as German-Americans from East New York moved alongside Dutch, Scottish and Irish immigrants.

In 1907, Golden City Amusement Park opened where the Canarsie Pier is today and growth continued in the 1920s when Italian and Jewish families began to buy year-round homes.

Hard times came though when the Depression increased pollution, putting a stop to fishing in Jamaica Bay. The amusement park then burned down and the entire site was later leveled for construction of the Belt Parkway.

The population eventually grew with the construction of public housing projects but segregationist violence flared when black residents moved in. With integration in the 1980s, more immigrants from the Caribbean settled, opening up more Caribbean-owned stores alongside the suburban spirit of the neighborhood.

Come See Canarsie, Before or After the L-Pocalypse Starts

INBrooklyn The L-pocalypse is coming. Oy vey.

There's something Brooklynites should keep in mind amid the planning for mitigative measures to deal with L-maggedon, as the looming L train line shutdown is also called.

When the rightfully dreaded 15-month closing of the train between Williamsburg and the West Village commences next April, the hexed, vexing subway line will keep operating within our borough.

You'll still be able to ride it to various fascinating Brooklyn neighborhoods.

We've decided to show you some of them. It would be nice if Brooklynites visit them next year when day-trippers from Manhattan are likely to be in short supply.

As our first destination, we chose Canarsie.

The other day, we rode the rails to the Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway stop, which is located at the very end of the L line.

We love Canarsie.

It's not a posh place. It is neither a brownstone neighborhood nor a hipster haven.

But the Eastern Brooklyn neighborhood is full of eye-catching 19th-century churches and beautiful old houses.

It has Canarsie Pier, which is part of the Gateway National Park Recreational Area.

The pier, which juts into glittering Jamaica Bay, is a prime fishing spot. People picnic there, too, on a tree-shaded snippet of the shoreline.

You can get to the pier by walking down Rockaway Parkway from the subway station. You access the pier via an underpass with sidewalks beneath the Belt Parkway.

A LOG CABIN AND HISTORIC CHURCHES

Once you've gotten an eyeful of the picturesque pier, you should go see Canarsie's log cabin. It's a little odd, and very charming.

It's on the corner of East 93rd Street and Flatlands Ave. This log cabin isn't some vestige of Brooklyn's very, very distant past. Brooklyn's surviving 17th- and 18th-century farmhouses are clad in shingles or clapboard and have swooping roofs. They don't look remotely like the eye-popping log cabin at 9301 Flatlands Avenue.

It was constructed in the 1930s. Back in the day, it was an ice cream parlor and luncheonette.

It is now a Fillmore Real Estate office.

• The nifty log cabin shares the block with Canarsie Community Reformed Church.

The date inscribed over the front door of this house of worship is 1876. It's clad in white clapboard and has a picturesque steeple.

CANARSIE: HOW IT GOT ITS NAME One of the reasons we give names to neighborhoods is for the community to have a sense of its past, a tie with its history.

Nowhere is that truer than with Canarsie.

For it was the Canarsie Indians who saw Giovanni da Verrazzano enter New York Harbor; it was the Canarsie who were here to greet Henry Hudson when he stepped on the shores of Brooklyn.

The Canarsie fished here, oystered here, farmed here, and lived here, in longhouses.

A Dutchman, Jacob Van Corlaer, bought the land from Canarsie chiefs Penhawitz and Kaskapettino and the Dutch settled there, on the swamps near Jamaica Bay. They named it Canarsie (sometimes spelled Canarsee) — which most likely is an Indian word meaning “fenced land” or “fort,” for the fences built by the Dutch farmers, although some believe it comes from the French “canard,” for “duck.”

The area then was part of the Dutch town of New Amersfoort, but when the English took over in 1664 they changed the name to Flatlands.

It was a quiet, lightly populated area, primarily a fishing village, until the 1860s when the Brooklyn and Rockaway Beach Railroad was built, bringing new visitors to the shore and new residents to live there.

In 1907, the Golden City Amusement Park opened where the Canarsie Pier is today and the waterfront became a popular recreation area. During the 1920s, however, the waters of Jamaica Bay became polluted, ruining the clamming and fishing businesses. Golden City burned down and in 1939 the entire site was leveled to construct the Belt Parkway (known then as the Circumferential Highway). Meanwhile, the City of New York built the 600-foot Canarsie Pier, which became part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.

Canarsie’s wetlands were filled in and its marshlands became sites for housing. With a growing population, the old swampy Canarsie became more of a typical American suburb.

While we rally round the flag, boys, rally once again, Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

– George F. Root, “The Battle Cry of Freedom” Brave Brooklynites who fought in the Civil War rest in eternal peace beneath an obelisk and a high-flying American flag.

Where? In Canarsie Cemetery.

Have you ever been there? It's an excellent place to honor the patriots of yesteryear — and see some beautiful tombstones, too.

It's right in the middle of Canarsie, the neighborhood where the L train makes its final stop.

You will find the graveyard by strolling down Remsen Avenue towards Jamaica Bay. There's an entrance near the intersection of Avenue K. The venerable non-sectarian cemetery's origins date back to 1843.

It is both a historic site where many of Canarsie's and Flatlands' founders are interred and an active burial ground.

The portion of the cemetery where Union soldiers are buried is called the GAR Plot. The acronym stands for Grand Army of the Republic. White tombstones, worn soft with age, stand in rows flanking the obelisk.

The flag that flies above the Civil War veterans' graves was donated by the family of a 20th-century military veteran, Peter V. Siggia.

He served in the Air Force from 1967 to 1969.

A weeping willow tree planted in 2012 adds additional greenery to the poignant scene.

CYPRESS HILLS CEMETERY IS THE OWNER

For more than a century, the 13-acre graveyard belonged to the City of New York, which tried unsuccessfully to sell it a couple times.

Ultimately, the city found a buyer, namely Cypress Hills Cemetery. The $50,000 purchase closed in 2011. The purchaser also created a $1 million permanent maintenance fund for Canarsie Cemetery.

A memorial garden brightens the Poor Grounds, where impoverished residents of yesteryear are buried.

Some of Canarsie Cemetery's most eye-catching tombstones are the Schmeelk monument and Katie Behrmann's headstone.

CAPTAIN HARRY WAS AN IMMIGRANT SUCCESS STORY

The Schmeelk memorial marker is adorned with an anchor, which makes sense.

According to Brooklyn Eagle stories published more than a century ago, Henry W. Schmeelk, who established the family presence in Canarsie, was a pioneer in the Jamaica Bay oyster business.

According to his obituary in the Nov. 12, 1913 Eagle, the German-born entrepreneur was a sailor before settling in Canarsie in the 1850s.

Schmeelk was an immigrant success story. He became one of the best known oyster planters in the area and had a big wholesale business. People called him “Captain Harry.”

Schmeelk died of ptomaine poisoning — which he got from eating canned salmon, his obituary says. Not oysters.

Several members of the Schmeelk family are buried at Canarsie Cemetery.

As for Katie Behrmann's tombstone, it has a beautiful young woman chiseled on it. Berhmann died in 1919.

The Van Houten gravestone, another eye-catcher, has an angel on it.

We also noticed a memorial marker for Annie M. Schenck Trent. The Schenck family first arrived in Brooklyn in the 1600s during Dutch Colonial days.

Jan Martense Schenck built a house in the 1670s in presentday Mill Basin. It was dismantled in the 1950s and is now at the Brooklyn Museum.

• Also on Flatlands Avenue, at the intersection of Rockaway Parkway, stately yellow-brick Holy Family Roman Catholic Church stands. It was constructed in 1950.

Outdoor statues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph were dedicated in 1936.

The parish was established in 1880.

• There are two historic churches on the same Canarsie street.

St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at 1187 East 92nd St., another classic white clapboard church with a steeple, dates back to 1879.

• Methodist Protestant Church, established in 1839, was long known as Grace Protestant Church. This big, beautiful house of worship at 1288 East 92nd St. now serves a non-denominational congregation and is called the Church @ the Rock.

‘PIGS’ CORNER' AND OTHER BACK STREETS

European settlement in Canarsie dates back to the 1600s, when the area was part of Flatlands.

Nevertheless, a lot of Canarsie's development occurred in recent decades. According to Kenneth Jackson and John Manbeck's indispensable book “The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn,” there were truck farms in the area all the way into the 1950s.

During our stroll, we noticed lots of apple trees in people's yards, which made us think of the farms that were there not too long ago.

• Our favorite houses in Canarsie are the older ones. Some pretty ones can be found on Glenwood Road and blocks near it in the East 90s and East 80s and on Remsen Avenue.

• Our favorite Canarsie street name is Varkens Hook Road. An entrance to it is marked by street signs near the corner of Farragut Road and East 87th Street.

A posting on the Fading Ad Blog says “varken” means “pig” in Dutch and “hook” is an English adaptation of “hoek,” the Dutch word for “corner.”

The neighborhood's various back streets are lined with charming old houses.

• For instance, Beach Place is a pedestrian-only pathway that's parallel to Avenue L and runs between East 88th and East 89th streets.

• Several shortie streets have entrances on or near Canarsie Road, which is smack in the middle of the neighborhood south of Avenue M. You'll find Schenck Place, Matthews Place, Rost Place and Kaufman Place.

Brooklyn Federal Court Celebrates Citizenship Day, Swears in 50

A smiling group of immigrants were welcomed in as new citizens in Brooklyn’s federal court on Monday as the court celebrated Citizenship Day with a special naturalization ceremony.

Spanning four continents of homelands, 50 new citizens sat with American flags in hand, in the Jack B. Weinstein Ceremonial Courtroom as they were officially naturalized and congratulated on their accomplishment.

“The men and women who will become citizens today and the thousands who are naturalized every year have given up everything, their countries, families and homes,” said Chief Judge Dora Irizarry, “coming with nothing more than the clothes on their backs to pursue their hopes and dreams for a better future in the land of freedom.”

The ceremony took place on Citizenship Day, also known as Constitution Day for the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. The Brooklyn federal courthouse holds about 310 naturalization ceremonies a year, the most in the country. That translates to 50,000 to 65,000 new citizens being sworn in annually.

Before the new citizens were given certificates of their status, they received congratulations from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor through a video presentation.

William Lohier, a Brooklyn high schooler and the 2018 NYC youth poet laureate, then gave an energetic speech as the keynote speaker.

“It takes a tremendous amount of grit, luck and perseverance to start anew in a foreign country and y’all made it,” Lohier yelled to applause. “But without a doubt, the most important right and responsibility that comes with being a citizen is voting.”

Before reading two of his poems to the crowd, the Stuyvesant High School senior drove in his point on the power of citizenship.

“You have experiences, stories, struggles that deserve to be told. You have cultures and values that deserve to be represented and all of you have a voice — use it,” he told the new citizens. “You’re hardworking, you have heart, you have drive and now you are citizens. You are what makes America great.”

FAITH IN BROOKLYN Landmark Heights Church Re-Dedicated as Pro-Cathedral for Episcopal Diocese Designation Has Meant Re-Investment in this History-Rich Building

Amid jubilation and a procession to the landmark church from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, the parish of St. Ann & the Holy Trinity on Sunday, Sept. 16, celebrated its becoming a pro-Cathedral for the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island The Rev. Lawrence Provenzano, bishop of Long Island, announced his intention to designate St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn Heights as a pro-cathedral last November at the diocese’s 151st Convention of the Diocese of Long Island.

A cathedral is the principal church of a diocese. It contains the bishop’s seat (cathedra, in Latin), and is a place for diocesan celebrations and episcopal services. (The word episcopal, spelled in lowercase, refers to matters involving bishops, in any branch of Western Christianity.

Capitalized, the word refers to the Episcopal Church USA, or clergy, parishes or dioceses within this denomination.)

The Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, New York, serves this role in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. Where a diocese already has a functioning cathedral, a pro-cathedral may also be named.

While serving as diocesan pro-cathedral, St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church will hold a cathedra (bishop’s seat) and provide a location for special diocesan events in the densely populated, western part of the diocese, within the City of New York.

The church remains under the control of its rector and vestry, and its status as a pro-cathedral continues only through the tenure of Bishop Provenzano. The next bishop may elect to extend pro-cathedral status, revoke it or grant it to another parish in the diocese.

The booklet for the dedication service states that, “St. Ann & the Holy Trinity comes naturally to pro-cathedral status. A pro-cathedral is most commonly the church that functions as the seat of a bishop until a cathedral has been erected. It was here in the former Church of the Holy Trinity that then rector, the Rev. Abram Newkirk Littlejohn, was elected the first Bishop of Long Island on Nov. 19, 1868. This building was Bishop Littlejohn’s pro-cathedral from the time of his consecration on Jan. 27, 1869, until the opening of the Cathedral of the Incarnation on April 9, 1885.”

St. Ann’s Church (then at Clinton and Livingston streets, before its merger with Holy Trinity) also had its turn at being a pro-cathedral.

“On May 16, 1950, Bishop James P. De Wolfe announced to the 83rd Convention of the Diocese of Long Island that he had accepted an offer by the vestry of St. Ann’s Church to use the church for ‘diocesan purposes’ in Brooklyn,” according to the above-mentioned service booklet. “In other words, he agreed that St. Ann’s would serve as pro-cathedral. St. Ann’s rector at the time, the Rev. Melville Harcourt, became rector and Bishop’s Vicar, and an honorary Canon.”

St. Ann’s Church, the first Episcopal parish established in Brooklyn, pre-dates the U.S. Constitution and the Episcopal Church as a religious body separate from the Church of England.

A group of Anglican-minded people had gathered together in the home of Ann and Joshua Sands. That group became a congregation and was formally incorporated in 1787 — a year before the U.S. Constitution was ratified.

Fast forward 182 years: In 1969, St. Ann’s took up residence in the former Church of the Holy Trinity, which had closed.

Being named a pro-cathedral has meant the diocese has invested in this landmark building, and is now a line item in the diocesan budget.

“It has already resulted in our spending of significant dollars to begin the process of the interior renovation of the church. The trustees of the diocese invested over $1 million last year in the interior work that had to be done, to the ceiling,” Bishop Provenzano told INBrooklyn recently.

Bishop Provenzano said, “My expectation is that the congregation, the clergy and staff of St.

Ann & the Holy Trinity Church will be further encouraged to open up the building for the use by the community. I think it’s already doing that, but I want to encourage more of that. A secondary or tertiary goal might be that people will come to church there, come for liturgies.

I think that our way of operating is that the church exists in the spirit of community — not just to get people to come to church.”

Shelly attended Ferguson High School in Newport News, Virginia; The Interlochen Center for the Arts; Thomas Nelson Community College and Virginia Commonwealth University receiving a Bachelors of Arts Degree.

Her fine arts background, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit guided Shelly’s decision to start her own successful business specializing in set design, art direction and soft goods styling.

Shelly felt very fortunate to have collaborated with so many incredibly talented photographers and art directors. She loved being a part of the process that creates “a beautiful shot”.

Her clients included Bloomingdales, Land’s End, Macy’s, Martha Stewart, Target and many more.

She cherished her close relatives and friends and treasured time spent traveling with them. She loved her pet pug, Henry, and the exciting life and pace of New York. Shelly surrounded herself with a lively circle of dedicated friends and pursued her passions for art, and modern architecture.

A celebration of Shelly’s life is being held in New York City on Saturday, September 22.

A memorial service will be held in Williamsburg, VA at a later date.

Shelly is survived by many loving relatives, friends and associates.

ON SEPT. 17, 1920, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The most extensive investigation ever launched in this country, put into motion a few minutes after the terrific explosion at Wall and Nassau Sts. had killed 35 persons and injured more than 200 others at noon yesterday, found at noon today that the cause is as much of a mystery as it was one second after it happened, though authorities are now practically unanimous in the belief that the tragedy was the result of an anarchist bomb … The horse-drawn wagon, blown to fragments, is the focal point of the investigators’ attention. The wagon was standing at a point almost opposite the entrance to the United States Assay Office and across the street from the J.P. Morgan building … That the catastrophe was the work of a purposeful anarchist was accepted by the Board of Estimate and Apportionment and an offer of $10,000 reward was made for the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. Attorney General [A. Mitchell] Palmer and Francis P. Garvan, Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Government’s anti-radical campaign, left Washington today for New York to direct the investigation into the explosion.”  ON SEPT. 17, 1867, the Eagle reported, “It has turned out that the cable dispatch, to the effect that five hundred one thousand dollars bogus American notes had been discovered in Holland, in the possession of a man named Gardersier, has only this foundation: Gardersier had in his possession notes of the amount and denomination named, issued by the Jeff Davis government. They are worth, of course, just the value of so much waste paper, whether bogus or genuine.”  ON SEPT. 18, Jenny 1850, the Eagle reLind ported, “A NightImage ingale in a Huff. courtesy of – Those who hapWikimedia Commons pened to be at the Castle Garden yesterday morning, during the rehearsal of the third concert, saw the great songstress with her feathers ruffled. It seems that about two hundred persons, enough to fill a small concert room, had gained access to the room, and when the singer arrived, she found not only an orchestra but an audience. These rehearsals, which are usually confined to a few professional people, the press, and friends especially invited, are exceedingly imperfect exhibitions of the powers of artists, and should not be made public. Miss [Jenny] Lind was evidently disappointed yesterday and sang at first under breath, but as she became interested in her music, she gave the clergy and well-dressed women who were present, some of the finest touches of her extraordinary voice.”

ON SEPT. 19, 1925, the Eagle reported, “Brooklyn has passed Manhattan in point of population. The census figures when made public some time next month will show this. The census figures will show also that Brooklyn, Queens, Richmond and the Bronx have all made their population gains at the expense of Manhattan. The 1920 census gave Brooklyn 2,018,356 as against 2,284,103 for Manhattan. Five years ago Manhattan had 265,747 more people than Brooklyn. Since then, however, the census figures will reveal, Brooklyn has not only wiped out this difference entirely, but has established a comfortable lead over its neighbor boro across the bridge.

Extensive building operations throughout this boro are said to have been the chief cause of its growth in population. Most of the increase is in the Flatbush, Bay Ridge and Coney Island sections.” 

ON SEPT. 20, 1947, the Eagle reported, “The death of former Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia today brought a flood of messages of condolence from public officials, past and present, and from the thousands of others who knew the fiery ‘Little Flower.’ Mayor [William] O’Dwyer, notified only a few minutes after the end came, declared: ‘Although the death of former Mayor La Guardia was expected, nevertheless his passing brings with it a shock of awful finality which the people of this city must now feel. Not very long ago Fiorello La Guardia retired as mayor of this city after 12 long and notable years of service. I fully believe that his unselfish devotion to the people and his untiring and energetic efforts to promote public welfare contributed to a great extent to the failing health which culminated in his death today.”

Literary Lights Shine at the Brooklyn Book Festival Continued from page 4 Such is the case with “An American Marriage,” Tayari Jones’ moving novel about an artist who splits up with her husband while he’s wrongfully incarcerated.

Aside from causing a brawl at a Los Angeles book club, it has earned a wide readership and wide acclaim.

Oprah selected it for her book club last winter. Former President Barack Obama put it on his summer reading list. It was nominated for the National Book Award for Fiction last week.

At the Brooklyn Book Festival on Sunday, Sept. 16, Jones said it’s “a thrilling experience” to have so many people read a book of hers.

She spoke at an event called “Tayari Jones and Jennifer Egan in Conversation” at St. Francis College Founders’ Hall in Brooklyn Heights.

Lisa Lucas, director of the National Book Foundation, led the discussion.

In “An American Marriage,” Roy and Celestial are newlyweds when he’s sent to prison for a crime she knows he didn’t commit.

‘What About Her Dreams?’

When Jones was writing the book, when she told people about the plot, they assumed the story line would be “one woman’s brave fight to free her man,” the author said.

But that wasn’t the direction Jones wanted to take.

“I was really examining the question of, ‘What about her dreams?’” she said of Celestial.

“Is it more selfish for her to want to live her life, or is it more selfish for him not to want her to live her life?” she said.

Readers find women characters likable if they’re self-sacrificing — but “I really wasn’t that interested in the nuances of sacrifice,” Jones said.

“I wanted to talk about something a little different, about how can you balance your desire with your responsibility? How much of love is responsibility?

“What do we owe one another just in general? And then, what do we owe one another in times of crisis?” she said.

In the novel, Celestial feels guilty about focusing on her career and falling in love with her childhood friend, Andre, instead of looking after her incarcerated husband.

Jones herself felt guilty about writing the novel the way she did, she said. It took her six years to finish working on the book.

Jennifer Egan Talks About ‘Manhattan Beach’ Egan, who won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel “A Visit from the Goon Squad,” talked about the “experiential research” she did for her most recent work, “Manhattan Beach.”

The main character in the New York Times bestseller is Anna Kerrigan, the first female div-

er at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II. Egan said that from 2005 to 2010, she interviewed “elderly people with very good memories of the era I was interested in,” including a World War II diver and women who had worked at the Navy Yard during the war. The reminiscences they shared with her gave her a “memory bank” to draw from when she began writing the book in 2012.

“It was as if I had formed a bunch of memories that weren’t mine,” Egan said.

One thing she found out in her research that surprised her was how many people had encountered gangsters.

A gangster named Dexter Styles plays a key role in “Manhattan Beach.”

Like Jones, Egan is thrilled that so many people have read her latest novel.

Some readers have confronted Egan about a woman in the book who plans to have an abortion, then decides not to. These readers are disappointed that the character made a choice that isn’t “progressive,” Egan explained.

But Egan wants her characters to behave in unexpected ways, she said.

She sympathizes with pro-choice advocates — but “in the end, I throw my lot in with the unexpected,” she said.

Modern Myth and the Female Role Therein Question: What do you get when you take a deep contemporary dive into the female experience in ancient folklore?

Answer: Genetic engineering, Minotaur C-sections, gastric bypasses — among other things.

In a Brooklyn Book Festival panel called “Modern Myth,” authors Carmen Maria Mach-

ado (“Her Body and Other Parties”), Madeline Miller (“Circe”) and Anjali Sachdeva (“All the Names They Used for God”) spoke with Bustle’s Senior Books Editor Cristina Arreola about what it means to reimagine folktales, fairy tales and ancient myths in a contemporary sense.

“What is a modern myth?” Arreola asked the panelists, as a conversational entry point.

The consensus seemed to be that all myths are modern by nature.

Miller, whose newest book “Circe” imagines the story behind the Odyssey’s Aeaean witch, said, “Ancient Greek myths are already modern,” as they are deeply concerned with human nature.

Machado spoke about the morphing powers of myths. “They absorb the DNA of the people who tell them,” she said.

The three also agreed that their stories, though they are mainly told through the female lens, are not to be pigeonholed as “feminist retellings” of classic mythology. Miller, referring to the Homeric canon, categorized epic literature as full of male protagonists and female cameos. And as Machado pointed out, one doesn’t have to go through “weird mental gymnastics” to find the often dystopian fates of women in these stories.

‘I Never Know the Ending Till I Get There’ These modern myths do not place a feminist hat on old tales, but instead delve deeper into them to focus on the stories that are often skated over.

“When you think more about the women’s role,” Sachdeva said, “the story changes.” An audience member asked Machado why her female protagonists are often unnamed. “I didn’t do that on purpose,” Machado said.

She and Sachdeva both expressed a type of searching behind their creative process. “I never know the ending till I get there,” Sachdeva said. Machado added that she often learns more about her own feelings on an issue by the time she reaches the end of the story.

All three women also answered questions about the often graphic depictions of the female body in their stories — bodies that bleed and decompose and vomit and pop pimples. Machado said she wanted to communicate the “messiness of being alive.”

Miller, too, said that she sought to expose messiness. “If you have the opportunity to write a Minotaur birth scene, as a writer you have to take it,” she said.

The Feminist Future of Fiction Will is a former child evangelist who no longer believes in God. Phoebe is a could-have-been piano prodigy who gave up on music and drinks a lot.

R.O. Kwon’s debut novel, “The Incendiaries,” tells the story of this star-crossed college couple.

It took Kwon a decade to write the book, she said at a Brooklyn Book Festival panel discussion called “The Feminist Future of Fiction.”

She said she wrote “The Incendiaries” to console a younger version of herself.

She lost her faith at age 17, she told a standing-room-only audience at the festival’s North Stage, which was outdoors on Cadman Plaza East.

The panel was presented by Books Are Magic, novelist Emma Straub’s Cobble Hill bookshop. Straub moderated the panel.

“I grew up deeply religious, so religious I thought I was going to be a missionary or, like, a recluse in a cave,” Kwon said.

Losing her faith was the most painful experience of her life, she said.

“In a lot of ways I was writing this book for that 17-year-old-girl who felt desperately lonely … to tell her that she’s not as lonely as she feels, and she was never as lonely as she feels,” Kwon explained.

Concerning the craft of fiction writing, Kwon said she can spend a whole day working on a sentence and is obsessed with punctuation.

Fortunately, her editor shares her obsession.

The two of them have told each other they’ve stayed awake at night thinking about semicolons.

Sources of Inspiration The authors on the panel talked about writers who have inspired them.

Kwon said when she was writing “The Incendiaries,” she would start her work day by reading a short passage of Virginia Woolf.

Alexia Arthurs, whose debut short-story collection is called “How to Love a Jamaican,” said she thought of author Junot Diaz when she wrote her book.

Also, Arthurs said, her story collection was inspired in various ways by “Lucy,” Jamaica Kincaid’s novel.

Lydia Kiesling, a panelist whose debut novel is called “The Golden State,” pointed to Anita Brookner and Iris Murdoch as inspirational women writers and said she loves Helen DeWitt’s book “The Last Samurai” and Elisa Albert’s novel “After Birth.”

Also, when Kiesling was working on “The Golden State,” she thought about Terry McMillan’s novel “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.”

It’s narrated in a first-person, present-tense voice.

Kiesling decided to use that voice to write her book.

The present-tense narration effectively evokes the alternating tedium and hysteria that the protagonist of “The Golden State” experiences as a mother spending 10 days alone with her small child.

Debut Novels About Tenacity and Caretaking In Katherena Vermette’s debut novel “The Break,” a small indigenous community is forced to grapple with change and community identity after the shock of a violent assault. The dual theme of tenacity and caretaking carried through the “Who? New!” panel, where Uli Beutter Cohen of Subway Book Review spoke with Vermette, Chaya Bhuvaneswar, Tadzio Koelb, Jaap Robben and Moriel Rothman-Zecher about their debut novels.

Robben, who has written several children’s books, makes his first foray into the world of adult fiction with “You Have Me to Love,” a story about a son helping his mother search for a father he already knows to be dead.

political journalist, said he made the switch to fiction because it was easier to seek human decency through the creation of characters than it was to find hope in the political sphere.

‘We Will Not Be Forgotten’ Robben, on the other hand, who originally aimed to write another children’s book with “You Have Me to Love,” said he ended up making the switch to adult fiction because there “was not enough hope” in the story.

Koelb’s first novel “Trenton Makes,” about a woman in New Jersey who kills her husband and then assumes his identity, is about a different kind of hope, the strange American strain of optimism and self-preservation. The “American Dream,” Koelb told the panel and the audience, has never been about what can be created for the community, but instead has always revolved around what we can do for ourselves.

“We’ve survived violence before, and we’ll survive it again,” said Bhuvansewar, “and we will not be forgotten.”

Writing About Music and the Self From the Beatles to David Bowie to Carly Rae Jepsen — as the Brooklyn Book Festival wound down, the authors on the “Writing About Music and the Self” panel sat on an outdoor stage on Cadman Plaza and talked influences, album covers and the concert experience.

Rob Sheffield (“Dreaming of the Beatles”) read a passage from his newest book about the Beatles song “It Won’t Be Long,” the song with the highest number of “yeahs” in the band’s whole repertoire.

Jessica Hopper (“Night Moves”) read an excerpt from an essay called “There Is a Light on My Bike and it Never Goes Out” about cycling around Chicago from show to show, avoiding ex-boyfriends working the doors and passing out candy to familiar faces in the venues.

Hanif Abdurraqib (“They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us”) read a piece about Michael Jackson’s moonwalking from a forthcoming book of essays that he said “reads kind of like a poem — but what doesn’t, if you write it well enough?”

‘I Am Fundamentally Midwestern’ The three authors, interviewed by moderator Laura Singara Dolan, each write music criticism with a highly personal tone. Abdurraqib talked about going to a Bruce Springsteen concert, where the artist sings extensively about the alienation of labor, and noticing he was the only black person in the venue who wasn’t performing some type of la-

The personal experience of music was a consistent theme throughout the panel.

“Everybody’s entry point [to a song] is different,” said Sheffield. He said he could listen to a song twice in the same day, three times even, and have a different experience with it each time.

Hopper spoke about the importance of place to her, the deep ties between her relationship with music and her relationship with her Chicagoan and Minnesotan roots.

“I am fundamentally Midwestern,” she said, then jokingly added, “I don’t want it fancy.”

‘Record Literally Everything’ When Dolan asked the panelists if they kept journals to reflect on music, a discussion started about the record of concerts and performances readily available to music fans because of YouTube.

Abdurraqib described YouTube as a sort of “diary” of a life where “days were spent rooted in consumption of pop culture.” He pointed out that if he wants to see if a concert really happened as he remembered it, he can look up the footage.

Sheffield noted how strange it was to go to a concert recently and not see any iPhone recording the performance, to see people “living in the now.”

“I’m actually mad when people are living in the now,” Abdurraqib said. He talked about a recent Carly Rae Jepsen concert he went to where the audience was asked to put their phones away, and how he kept thinking to himself as the show went on, “Somebody better be recording this.”

“Record literally everything,” he said.

“Especially the police.”
