‘The Sopranos’ Creators Look Back at a TV Show that Slayed

Back in 1997, then-up-and-coming actor Michael Imperioli was mulling two work offers: a cable TV show pilot and a small role in a Woody Allen film.

The script for the TV show didn’t initially seem so special to him. “I was not blown away by the pilot,” he admitted. On the other hand, he had long admired Allen and was being offered a spot in his movie “Celebrity.”

Imperioli couldn’t do both and was leaning toward doing the film. “That would have been the dumbest mistake of my life,” he says now with a laugh.

The reason was simple: The TV show was “The Sopranos,” which this year is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its premiere on HBO. The six-season show would win 21 Emmys and become the first cable series ever to win the Emmy

for outstanding drama series. It also earned Imperioli an acting Emmy in 2004.

More than awards, the show about mid-level gangsters in New Jersey proved that audiences could handle morally complex anti-heroes, paving the way for shows like “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men,” and marking the beginning of the time when TV started eating cinema’s lunch.

Creator, showrunner and head writer David Chase says all he wanted to do was create a show that he and his friends would like to watch. He had toiled in frustration within the strict confines of network TV for years, on such shows as “The Rockford Files” and “Northern Exposure.”

“I must admit that a lot of what I went into ‘The Sopranos’ with was anger. I was angry about all my years in network TV. And I’m one of the lucky ones. I worked for some really talented people and with some really talented people,” Chase says.

He recalled that a high-level executive at NBC

had advocated for something called LOP, which stood for “least offensive programming.” Chase chafes at the notion: “It makes for a very bland mixture.”

“The Sopranos” was anything but bland. It followed the depressed Mafia boss Tony Soprano balancing his ruthless illegal business with raising a family. There was brutal violence, infidelity, pasta and loyalty and dishonor. James Gandolfini played Tony with equal parts ferocity and tenderness.

“To interact with him was to make a deal with the devil. You would be ethically compromised.

And I sort of wanted to show how easily that happens, what that really means. At the same time, I didn’t want to do a morality story,” Chase says.

“I guess the largest thing that I was trying to bring out was it’s a pretty cold universe. It’s a very cold universe. But we have this thing called love which we can use against that. That’s about the only weapon we have. That’s where I found my-

self thinking a lot.”

Chase wanted to make scenes longer if they needed to be — or shorter — and let his stories unfold slower than a network show. He initially just wanted to make a self-contained mini-movie each week and had to be convinced to continue the story lines (He worried he’d make something like “Dallas.”) HBO, he said, never tried to meddle.

With his hit show, Chase also proved that audiences were smarter than what they’d been given credit for by network honchos. Fans would tune in to see complicated people in often messy situations.

“That was very important to me: Not talking down to people. You cut off so much when you do it the other way. There’s so much richness in life and to exclude parts of it is crazy if you’re creating something.”

Imperioli, who was a believer as soon as he actually saw the show’s pilot, credited Chase for bringing a cinematic quality to TV. A stunning cast — including Edie Falco, Annabella Sciorra and Lorraine Bracco — didn’t hurt.

“Everything that people loved about gangster movies and ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Goodfellas’ and all that stuff, all of a sudden was in your living room on a weekly basis, in a novelistic, serialized fashion,” Imperioli said. “That was really groundbreaking.”

Before it signed off for good 12 years ago, “The Sopranos” left behind something that continues to be debated — a cut-to-black finale that left everything ambiguous.

Even the cast was divided. Imperioli and Gandolfini joined more than a half-dozen cast members in a viewing party in Miami. “Everybody was pretty shocked. No one really expected it to be that abrupt, I think, and that ambiguous,” Imperioli says. “The room was kind of torn on whether they liked that or not.”

Fans of the show won’t have to mourn much longer since Chase has a prequel film planned for 2020 called “The Many Saints of Newark.” Chase and “Sopranos” veteran Lawrence Konner have written the script, and it will be set in the 1960s during the Newark, New Jersey, riots which Chase witnessed.

In crafting the film, Chase reacquainted himself with the songs and cultural touchstones of the period, as well as watching a few old episodes of “The Sopranos” to ensure the timeline fits. Should fans expect a few inside jokes? “I sure hope so,” Chase answered.

He admits to some nerves about the film’s reaction: “I think there’s always pressure in following something, right? And ‘The Sopranos’ was such a hit, such a big explosion. How do you do that twice?”

Goats, Geese and Dogs: Here’s How Many Animals Caused Subway Delays in 2018

Cats and dogs and goats, oh my.

Those were some of the furry creatures that snarled subway traffic last year by drifting onto the train tracks.

While New Yorkers are used to delays, those caused by animals are still enough of a novelty that they provoke a frenzy on Twitter.

In 2018, there were 29 animal-related incidents in the subway system, and many of them occurred in Brooklyn, where long stretches of tracks run outside or near parks and other wildlife areas.

“Many of our trains operate in exterior environments where they’re more likely to encounter wildlife, but these incidents are extremely rare in light of the thousands of trips we run in a single day or the millions of trips we run in a year,” MTA spokesperson Amanda Kwan told the Brooklyn Eagle.

Although there was an average of more than two incidents a month last year, January 2019 has already seen an uptick in that number. Last month alone saw seven animal-related events.

“Pets and wild animals often times enter the subway system to escape extreme weather conditions like the cold, rain and snow,” said Dr. Brett Levitzke, chief medical officer and president of Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group.

“They also may find sources of food left behind by subway passengers. Once in the tunnels, it is easy to see how they could become lost or unable to find a viable exit.”

Depending on the case, MTA officials often have to turn off electricity on the tracks so that police officers and first responders can remove the animals safely.

“Due to numerous ongoing efforts to improve service, including working with police to respond to and recover from incidents faster, the number of subway delays has decreased to four-year lows in recent months,” Kwan said.

Last year’s 29 incidents caused 268 trains to be delayed. To put that into perspective, there are roughly 3 million trips per year and about 8,400 a day. (One trip constitutes a train going from one terminal to the other, or a one-way trip.)

Notable Delays While the MTA does not categorize incidents by the type of animal causing the delay, some of the wilder cases have made headlines in the media — from a pair of goats that went for a stroll in August, to a dog named Jake that shut down the Williamsburg Bridge last month, shedding his leash and running onto the tracks.

The J, M and Z lines were delayed for almost two hours after Jake was seen running onto the bridge. The dog was saved, but the MTA had to turn off power so the NYPD could rescue him.

The NYCT Subway Twitter account said it was the third report of a dog along the J line that week.

“A cop just walked through with a bowl of dog food,” John R Smith III wrote on Twitter, referring to the stalled train. “People are now trying to pay each other for cigarettes. It takes [an] hour and a half and one dog for a New York subway to convert to prison rules.”

According to the MTA’s rules of conduct, “no person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container and carried in a manner which would not annoy other passengers.”

On Feb. 4, a goose was rescued from the subway tracks at the Parkside Avenue station on the B and Q line in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. The bird made its way to the Church Avenue Station where police officers were able to cage the animal after MTA officials shut off electricity on the tracks.

In August, the two goats that wandered onto the subway tracks of the N line near Eighth Avenue in Sunset Park headed south until police finally herded them to safety.

Hermann /MTA New York City Transit roaming along the N line tracks in Brooklyn,” the NYCT Subway Twitter account wrote. “They’re safe and not currently affecting service, but they are on the run.” A second tweet read, “Two very baaaaad boys.”

In October, a kitten briefly disrupted service on the Q line after it was seen on the tracks at Brooklyn’s Cortelyou Road station. “Q train service has resumed after NYPD safely removed a very frightened but otherwise unharmed kitten from the tracks at Cortelyou Rd,” the NYCT Subway account wrote.

In April, a pit bull puppy named Lucky ran for several miles along the tracks in North Brooklyn.

The animal was first seen at Wilson Avenue in Bushwick and was finally captured on the L-train tracks in Williamsburg.

In February 2018, a runaway dog named Dakota shut down F train service between Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than an hour. The poodle

was at a dog park near the Manhattan Bridge, according to The New York Times, when it got scared and ran into the York Street station in DUMBO. MTA officials shut off power on the line, and the pooch was eventually corralled two stops away at the Bergen Street station in Cobble Hill.

Canines causing delays on the subway is nothing new. As far back as 1937, an Eagle front-page article titled “Dog in 3-Mile Chase Tangles Up Subway” told the story of a pup that led search parties on a 25-minute pursuit through the metro.

“A small, white wire-haired terrier braved the terrifying perils of a man-made nether region — that is, subways — today and managed to survive.

But not without causing a lot of hubbub,” the piece read.

“The canine wanderer repeatedly escaped death under the wheels of onrushing subway trains and, at length, fled, yelping and badly scared, to the street.”

A lawyer for sexual abuse victims recently said the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn must release the criteria its leaders used to determine the credibility of sexual-abuse accusations against dozens of priests. “Many of my clients are looking at the list with skepticism,” said Mitchell Garabedian, a Boston attorney who represents local clients who say they were abused by Brooklyn clergy.

MotherCoders, a nonprofit founded by technology professional Tina Lee in San Francisco, has now come to Brooklyn and is offering a workshop that teaches coding to women.

Lee says only about 25 percent of all tech jobs are held by women, and few of these jobs are in leadership positions. 

BUSHWICK

Food-related startups who are trying to rebuild after the shutdown of the Pilotworks food-business incubator last year have organized the new Brooklyn Independent Food Collective, according to Bushwick Daily. The group is hoping to build a new food incubator and shared commercial kitchen in the area. 

The city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development has announced that 250 buildings throughout the city have become part of its Alternative Enforcement Program.

The landlords of these buildings have four months to make repairs or they will be fined. 

Police arrested a woman for allegedly giving false information after they caught her crawling under a turnstile at the Hoyt Street subway station on Feb. 19, according to the Brooklyn Paper. When they questioned her, she gave two birth dates, two addresses and a different first name, police said. She then made a run for it and tried to struggle with cops when they finally caught her.

For over a decade, Galanin has been embedding incisive observation into his work, investigating and expanding intersections of culture and concept in form, image and sound. For “The Value of Sharpness: When It Falls,” Galanin has created sixty porcelain hatchets, which are suspended from the gallery ceiling.

ENRICO RILEY: NEW WORLD The paintings are part of an unfolding and evolving cycle that investigates themes of historical and contemporary violence, martyrdom, grief, and the middle passage within a spatial domain.

Enrico Riley challenges viewers to decipher and contextualize his work’s fractured narratives. For many Americans, exposure to the plethora of recent media examples of reflexive violence perpetrated on African-Americans has blurred the boundaries between the historical record with which our country is so familiar and the problems still facing contemporary culture today.

LIVING INSIDE

SANCTUARY For two years, Brooklyn-based photojournalist Cinthya Santos Briones has photographed undocumented migrants who face orders of deportation. By taking up asylum in houses of worship, often for indefinite periods of time, these individuals and their families have found both a refuge and a provisional prison. Santos Briones’ photographs are an intimate depiction of living in a state of uncertainty. Rather than present portraits of people in hopeless situations, she has chosen to convey the universal routines of their everyday lives. Birthdays are celebrated, siblings tease one another, and meals are shared.

Theatre for Kids and Families Opens in Tri-State Park Slope JAG-ONE Physical Therapy Expands Throughout Area

Play Nice Theatre has begun its season of lighthearted musicals with positive, life-affirming messages about cooperation and kindness. And they’re looking for their July/August cast, musicians, and backstage helpers.

Relocated from Manhattan, this all-volunteer company’s rehearsals and meetings refl ect their of mission Photos courtesy JAG-ONE and message by encouraging its mixed-generation cast and crew (ages 6 to 106) to interact socially and share stories of their own lives on and off stage.

In a welcoming atmosphere, the experienced and new Play Nice actors and crew are encouraged to come early and linger after assigned rehearsal slots in order to get to know each other, help each other memorize their lines, do school homework and play games. Some may choose to help with scenery painting or prop-making.

All ticket sales from main stage shows ($10 admission) is donated to local charities, a prime motivation for many participants who find it rewarding to help raise money for those less fortunate through donating their time and talent.

According to theatre founder Rob Lester, the cast and crew are like a second family. “Working on a show with

friendly people is fun and satisfying,” he says.

The Brooklyn Eagle stopped by the new location at 89 Fourth Avenue, five blocks from Barclays Center, where the two-act musical “The Three Little Pigs Buy a Brownstone in Brooklyn” is running on weekends (2 p.m. Saturdays, 3:30 p.m.

Sundays, through July 1).

The Eagle is mentioned prominently in the Brooklyn-centric script in Scene 6 and the newspaper is used as a prop as well. The show’s target audience is ages six and up, with plenty of humor adults will appreciate.

“Two six-year-olds are among the actors, with the oldest member more than ten times their age, and the family idea is reflected literally: the cast includes two brothers who play two of the pigs; a mother and her son have a scene together as an older pig

and hedgehog; two actors are cousins,” we’re informed.

Original lyrics are set to public domain melodies including old folk songs and classic children’s tunes.

The show, which emphasizes “being a good neighbor,” plus patience, perseverance, and pig puns runs through July 1, will be followed by show after show, starting with the summer musical about kids and counselors at an unusual summer camp, titled “Not a Happy Camper.”

The theatre welcomes audition appointments, visits, donations of costumes and supplies, and all inquiries throughout the year. Acting classes, puppet shows, concerts, one-day free workshops, variety shows, and special family events are planned and a fundraising concert on July 20.

Two of New York and New Jersey’s premier physical therapy groups – JAG Physical Therapy and One on One Physical Therapy -- have joined forces to form JAG-ONE, an unparalleled outpatient physical therapy platform.

The group is led by three of the nation’s most accomplished physical therapists, John Gallucci Jr., chief executive officer; Richard Bodian, chief clinical officer; and Joseph Saraceno, chief operating officer. Combined, they bring together their years of experience, clinical aptitude and business acumen to create a unique patient-centered approach to rehabilitation.

“After years of working collaboratively as colleagues that envisioned creating a unique physical therapy experience for our patients, I could not be more excited to officially move forward with Rich and Joe as JAG-ONE Physical Therapy,” said Gallucci. “As a unified entity, we remain confident that our enhanced resources will serve to improve the quality of life for our patients and continue to proudly serve as a medical resource to the region’s local communities.”

JAG-ONE Physical Therapy consists of 42 outpatient physical therapy clinics with 15 located in Brooklyn and others in Staten Island, Manhattan, Queens, Westchester and New Jersey. Black History Month Champions Honored by EBrooklyn Media and WellCare Unique networking event focuses on remembering the past, celebrating the present, embracing the future

BY ANDY KATZ ebrooklyn media, publisher of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Brooklyn Heights Press, Brooklyn Spectator and Home Reporter among other community-based newspapers, joined WellCare to host an evening honoring African-American leaders in Brooklyn’s business, healthcare, political and law enforcement community.

Michael Nussbaum, co-publisher of the Queens Daily Eagle, a sister newspaper and co-host with EBrooklyn Media, welcomed all, and noted “Today we honor leaders whose influence extends well beyond the borders of Brooklyn itself.”

Host Dozier Hasty, publisher of EBrooklyn Media, said “As a white guy born in Georgia, who chose Brooklyn as home almost half a century ago, I feel inspired by the indomitable spirit represented here today. In my work I see reasons why Black History should be celebrated every day, not just one month a year.” ”Particularly at this time,” added Hasty, “ our entire country needs the lessons of graceful forebearance, leadership and dignity that are seen in those we honor tonight. And I believe Brooklyn is the place where this happens every day.”

“These are leaders,” said Queens Daily Eagle Publisher Mike Nussbaum, “that go well beyond the borders of Brooklyn itself.”

“Wonderful things are happening in this borough,” said ebrooklyn media Publisher J. Dozier Hasty.

“Tonight you’re going to hear from some of the real heroes of Brooklyn life.”

The evening’s principal co-sponsor, WellCare, provides government-sponsored managed care services. “WellCare speaks for people who lack resources, people of color, people for which English is a second language,” said WellCare President, John Burke said. “We help people navigate the jungle of healthcare bureaucracy and get the best possible

outcome by remaining in compliance with their medical regimen.”

The keynote speaker for the evening was Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives, J. Phillip Thompson.

“African-Americans,” said Thompson, in keeping with the theme of remembering the past, “more than any other group, have maintained and expanded the principles of the American Revolution of the 1770s and 80s. Universal human rights called into question the theological notion that white people and the church possessed some special responsibility to rule those parts of the world where people were deemed inherently inferior. These gave rise to the French Revolution of 1989, the Haitian Revolution of 1801 and the U.S. Civil War of 1861.

“One of the great errors in the teaching of American history has been to tell people that these ideas, these ethos, were gradually and peacefully incorporated into the American way of life,” he went on. “This is completely untrue. Every step in the direction of these ideals has taken immense struggle and immense sacrifice.

“Let me say this,” he said. “We’re going to win this fight.”

The evening’s first honoree was First Deputy Commissioner of the NYPD Ben Tucker. In addition to being NYPD’s second-in-command, Tucker is also a tenured professor at Pace University.

“I’ve had people along the way who have changed my life,” Tucker said, recalling a high school guidance counselor who arranged a transfer for him away from a school with a substantial gang presence to one in Flatbush. “It was the best thing that ever happened to me,” he said. “It changed my life completely.”

The next honoree was Bill Thompson, Jr. onetime New York City comptroller and current chair of the board of trustees of the City University of New York.

“I look at Black History Month,” said Thompson, “as

each and every day when you look at contributions African-Americans and people of color have made.”

Thompson recalled his father, a veteran of WWII, serving in a segregated army. He was not permitted to eat in the same mess hall as white GIs, while German POWs were.

“We’ve come a long way,” he said, “But we still have a long way to go. Look at what’s happening in Washington, D.C. This is not just a blip. Rights are being eroded. We cannot sit back and assume things will take care of themselves. They will not.”

Arlene Meyers, director of nursing for NYC Health+ Hospitals, recalled her grandmother who lived to be 103, and a great-grandmother who lived to 107.

“They were great historians,” Meyers said. “And all of my life has been to educate.”

Maurice Coleman, senior vice president of community development banking at Bank of America Merrill Lynch said, “No one makes it alone. Not only did I get a degree from Columbia, Brooklyn gave me my PhD. It gave me the commitment to work hard.

Over my career, I’ve done many interesting things, but I couldn’t have done them without my family, without my friends.”

Dr. Jocelyn Rainey is chief administrative officer of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. “I want to thank all of my fellow honorees,” said Rainey, “especially Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, whose support has enabled the Navy Yard to grow and create jobs. This award is especially gratifying for me. I’m going to charge each and every one of you to be aware that we’re creating history for our young people to follow.”

Deidre Sully, director, Public Health Solutions, pioneered the implementation of smoke-free zones from NYCHA to city campuses to office buildings.

Last, but certainly not least, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams accepted his award. “You do an amazing job,” Adams told Nussbaum. “Let me say this, no matter how adept the eagle is, it cannot fly w ith o ne wing. We n eed b oth wings.

And the honorees tonight provide the other wings that permit us to soar as high as we do.”

Speaking of the “hyphen” used to designate African-Americans or Jewish-Americans, or Italian-Americans, Adams said, “You remove that hyphen, you remove us as well. Someone needs to give that memo to Donald Trump.”

Five Fun Spots to See in Red Hook Colossal Cranes and an Excellent Esplanade

‘I COULDA BEEN A CONTENDER’

It’s a history nerds’ paradise.

The rest of you will love it, too.

We’re talking about Red Hook.

Who knew warehouses could be so splendid?

The ones you’ll find in this waterfront Brooklyn neighborhood are grand, red-brick edifices with arched doorways and wooden shutters on their windows.

The warehouses were built around the time of the Civil War. Red Hook was a hugely important cargo port at that time.

Shipping continued to be a big deal in the neighborhood through the 1940s.

Red Hook’s docks were a rough place in the 20th century.

You know this if you’ve seen Elia Kazan’s famed film “On the Waterfront.”

It was set in Red Hook, although it was filmed in New Jersey, Kenneth Jackson and John Manbeck’s book “The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn” says.

Of course you remember this movie.

In an Oscar-winning role, Marlon Brando utters one of his all-time best lines: “I coulda been a contender.”

These days, the historic warehouses are filled with art studios, artisans and small manufacturers including a bakery called Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie. These businesses have made a comeback after suffering dire damage from flooding caused by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

If you don’t live in Red Hook, you might be daunted by the fact that the nearest subway stop is far away.

But you can get to the neighborhood on the NYC Ferry.

The route’s very scenic, with views of the World Trade Center and Governors Island.

Or you can bundle up against the winter chill and ride a Citi Bike. Two convenient cycle-docking spots near the first stop on our stroll are located on the corner of Henry and Bay streets and the corner of Dwight and Van Dyke streets.

A good starting point is Todd Shipyard, or what’s left of

To find the remains of the historic facility, head to IKEA at 1 Beard St. On the back side of the Swedish home-furnishings megastore, there’s a recreation area called Erie Basin Park. It’s the site of the now-demolished shipyard.

When the New York City Planning Commission gave IKEA permission in 2004 to tear down Todd Shipyard, the retailer agreed to build the 6.3-acre park.

A 2004 article in online publication CityLand said the park was going to have 300 trees.

The prime eye candy in Erie Basin Park is the collection of colossal cranes salvaged from the shipyard.

By the way, Todd Shipyard was constructed in the 1860s.

The park is located on the Erie Basin, which Irish immigrant William Beard built as a cargo port for ships traveling on the Erie Canal.

COFFEY STREET

A couple blocks inland, numerous streets are lined with old-fashioned rowhouses.

Coffey Street’s got some great ones, especially on the block between Conover and Ferris streets.

After you cross Ferris Street, you’ll see Louis Valentino Jr. Park and Pier.

It’s got a sandy beach and a pile of rocks topped with concrete blocks painted with letters that formerly spelled out the words “RED HOOK” in capital letters.

Some of the letters are missing.

The park is picturesque anyway.

It was named for a Brooklyn firefighter who died young while doing search and rescue at a burning chop shop in Flatlands.

A PRIME PLACE TO SEE THE SETTING SUN

There are lots of places in Red Hook where you can view the sun’s last light glimmering on the water.

The third-floor dining room at Brooklyn Crab is one good option. The windows are enormous.

The Reed Street restaurant stands on stilts, which enabled it to survive Superstorm Sandy.

P.S. If you decide to make a night of it in Red Hook, walk around the corner to Conover Street for drinks at Sunny’s Bar. This beloved watering hole began operating in the 1890s. It was saved from permanent closure after Superstorm Sandy by the efforts of Sunny Balzano’s wife, Tone Johansen Balzano.

Sunny Balzano died in 2016. Legions of friends and admirers mourned him.

When you’re done communing with the ghosts of departed shipyard workers, walk down Beard Street to Red Hook’s primary retail corridor, Van Brunt Street.

You can see art at several places on Van Brunt Street. One great spot is Kentler International Drawing Space.

There was an exhibition of Meridith McNeal’s works the day we visited the gallery. It has ended but a new show will be opening soon.

There’s so much to do on Van Brunt Street. For example, shop at Pioneer Books.

Pick up some pastries at Baked. One specialty is the Brookster, which is a brownie with chocolate chip cookie dough baked inside it.

Buy vinyl records at the Record Shop. That’s the store’s name, which is why we capitalized it.

We could make a list as long as your arm. But you get the point.

THE ESPLANADE BEHIND FAIRWAY MARKET

Van Brunt Street dead-ends on the shoreline. There, you’ll find an esplanade.

It begins behind Fairway Market, which is on the ground floor of a post-Civil War warehouse that’s eye candy unto itself.

The Red Hook Stores Building, as it’s called, has a trolley car parked behind it.

You can see the World Trade Center from the esplanade — and the Statue of Liberty, though she’s too far away to be photogenic.

As you walk along, you’ll notice a barge floating nearby. It’s the Lehigh Valley Barge #79 — aka the Waterfront Museum.

ON FEB. 26, 1934, the Eagle reported, “Headed by Borough President Raymond V. Ingersoll, a delegation of prominent Brooklynites will call on President [Franklin] Roosevelt at the White House Wednesday formally to invite the chief executive and Mrs. Roosevelt to the 100th anniversary celebration of the granting of a charter to the city of Brooklyn. The delegation will include Frederick W. Hinrichs, Gen. Sydney Grant, president of the Society of Old Brooklynites, and Cleveland Rodgers, editor of the Eagle. Gov. Herbert H. Lehman, Mayor [Fiorello] LaGuardia and other distinguished figures in the city, state and nation have already accepted invitations to attend the centennial banquet at the Hotel St. George April 7. Postmaster Francis J. Sinnott said today he has indorsed the suggestion of the Society of Old Brooklynites that the Post Office issue a special commemorative stamp for the occasion.”  ON FEB. 26, 1947, the Eagle reported, “London, (U.P.) — The British government will seek the United Nations’ advice on solving the Palestine problem, but does not intend to surrender the Holy Land mandate to the world organization.

Colonial Secretary Arthur Creech Jones disclosed the British plan for U.N. consideration at the close of the Commons debate in which Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin accused President [Harry] Truman of wrecking British efforts to solve the Palestine issue. Creech Jones said definitely that Britain was not going to the United Nations to surrender her mandate, given to her by the League of Nations in 1922. ‘We are going to them to set out the problem and ask their advice as to how the mandate can be administered, and if it cannot be administered in its present form, how it can be amended,’ he said.”

ON FEB. 28, 1860, the Eagle reported, “The Common Council passed a resolution last evening to memorialize Congress for an appropriation to erect a suitable building for a post office. The increasing growth and business of Brooklyn require some permanent and adequate accommodation for the postal business of the city, and we think if proper measures were taken, an appropriation for this purpose could be obtained from the general government. Postmaster [William H.] Peck has been using his best efforts to this end, and seconded by the city authorities and public opinion, the project may be realized during the present Congress.”  ON FEB. 28, 1940, the Eagle reported, “Controller [Joseph D.] McGoldrick today prepared an application to the Board of Estimate for a public hearing on the removal of the Fulton St. ‘L’ —and other elevated lines – to be held Thursday afternoon, March 14. The hearing will be the first specific step toward actual razing of the gloomy spider’s shadow over Brooklyn’s main business street — the demolition of which Brooklynites have sought for many years. The controller estimated that the price of demolition will be $2,000,000. He added another half-million for the razing of most of the 5th Ave. elevated, and a mere $50,000 to pull down the Broadway ‘L’ spur, an idle section of the Broadway line adjoining the Williamsburg Bridge, between Roebling St. and the East River front. To that Brooklyn total of $2,550,000, the controller added $8,000,000 for Manhattan ‘L’ removals -- $6,000,000 for the 9th Ave. elevated and $1,500,000 for the 2nd Ave. line. A prolonged, bitterly contested hearing was foreseen.”

Brooklyn Heights Association Honors People And Programs Serving the Needy Here

“For I was hungry and you gave me food.

I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” These words from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25, verses 35-36 epitomize the work of two organizations that were honored Tuesday night for their assistance to the needy.

CAMBA and its Respite Bed Program, and First Presbyterian Church’s Food Pantry, each received the Brooklyn Heights Association’s 2019 Award for Outstanding Service to the Community at the group’s annual meeting, held at St. Francis College.

Both CAMBA and the First Presbyterian Church’s Food Pantry run effectively because of their partnerships with neighborhood faithbased and secular organizations.

Emcee Tom Stewart, in presenting the awards, told the standing-room-only crowd, “Currently, one out of every 110 city residents lacks a home, and therefore must fend for themselves by sleeping on streets and subways throughout the city. And that includes here in Brooklyn Heights. As part of the obligation that we share to the wider community, Brooklyn Heights is actively involved in helping to ameliorate this situation. For many years, CAMBA, a Brooklyn nonprofit organization, has worked to build a more inclusive city where all residents have access to the resources and support services they need to survive.”

Describing how the program works, Stewart continued, “With the assistance of religious institutions throughout Brooklyn, CAMBA operates the Respite Bed Program to house homeless single men. The program functions in tandem with CAMBA’s Gathering Place Drop-In Center, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days per week. At the Drop-In Center, clients receive three meals a day and have access to shower and laundry facilities, as well as case management services and assistance with entitlement programs, not to mention medical and mental health services. Following a rigorous screening, those who qualify are transported each night to a Respite Bed site.

“In Brooklyn Heights, CAMBA partners on a rotating basis with the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, Grace Church Brooklyn Heights, as well as St. Ann and the Holy Trinity to provide safe overnight shelter for up to a dozen homeless men,” he continued. “Each night, seven or eight volunteers from these institutions are involved in cooking, serving meals, prepar-

ing the cots; and some of them actually stay overnight.”

Stewart commended CAMBA’s expertise, experience, resources and dedication, recognizing in particular Yehudit Moch, the operation manager of the Respite Bed Program, who ably manages 20 sites throughout Brooklyn and the 40 congregations involved; and CAMBA’s President and CEO Joanne Oplustil.

Other CAMBA officers and congregational coordinators present to witness the event included Kathy Reynolds, Anne Landman, Elizabeth Stong and Nancy Trott; CAMBA Vice President Carol Rubinstein, and Directors Annette Rivera and Sheila Stainback.

First Presbyterian Church’s Food Ministry Grew from Two Penny Lunch Outreach First Presbyterian Church, which in three years will mark its bicentennial, has for the past 15 years opened its doors each week to reduce hunger.

A predecessor of the food pantry was the Two Penny Lunch that four church elders established in the 1990s. These were Dorothy Gill, Dorothy Turmail, Lee Arnott and Delores Roberts (all are now deceased). Many years ago, the Eagle published a story about the Two Penny Lunch.

At that time, Turmail told the Eagle that she had spotted a homeless man taking shelter on church grounds. The ladies prepared a generous plate of food from a church event taking place the same night, and left it for him. The next morning, they found an empty plate and two pennies, and thus a new ministry of preparing meals for homeless individuals received its name.

Church Administrator Anne Solages told the Eagle this week that this outreach evolved 15 years ago into a much larger ministry, and that 10 years ago, in 2009, Social Action partnered with Food Bank.

Otherwise, before the church began the food pantry, the Brooklyn Heights area was not well served by hunger-relief services. The First Presbyterian Church responded to the need.

Today, members of the congregation, volunteers from Packer Collegiate, the Brooklyn Autism Center and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church work at the pantry on a regular basis. Further assistance comes from two Community Supported Agriculture groups, which supply fresh food, and from grant support by the Food Bank for New York City, which enables the church to buy food from wholesale sources.

“She keeps things running smoothly when the doors open and people come inside. Behind the scenes, Jane manages the budget, directs the volunteers, buys the food, coordinates deliveries, makes sure the shelves are neatly stocked— and accepts donations.

“The more than 100 people who arrive on Thursday mornings are warmly welcomed by the 10 volunteers who distribute the wholesome food that is found on the church’s shelves,”

Stewart continued. “No questions are asked.

No one is turned away. The pantry serves the working poor, those with fixed incomes or limited mobility, out-of-work breadwinners, and low-income caregivers.”

He explained that the clients are given the freedom to choose from among the stocked items those foods they would like, rather than being given a prepackaged selection. “All clients receive the same respect and dignity as members of our extended community,” he said.

Jewish Heritage Fund Marks 10th Birthday, As New Award Applications Are Now Open The New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Jewish Heritage Fund marks its 10year milestone, having provided repair and restoration grants totaling more than $800K to synagogues in Brooklyn and around New York City.

The Jewish Heritage Fund has announced a new application season, with a June 1, 2019 deadline. Historic synagogues are encouraged to apply to the Conservancy by June 1 for challenge grants of up to $75,000 for major repair and restoration projects at https://bit.ly/2EBqZO0.

Jewish Heritage Fund’s 10-Year Legacy Over the past 10 years, several Brooklyn synagogues have received awards through challenge grants that have helped maintain their historic buildings: • Congregation Beth Elohim, Park Slope, in 2011 received $50,000 for dome roof/skylight/limestone facade restoration.

• Temple Beth Emeth v’Ohr Progressive Shaari Zedek, Prospect Park South, in 2012, was granted $40,000 for roof replacement and parapet restoration. The temple consolidated with another congregation last year and is now called Beth Shalom v’Emeth Reform Temple, acronymed as B’ShERT, a phrase with special meaning in Hebrew.

• Young Israel of Flatbush in 2015 was granted $25,000 for bronze door restoration.

• The Manhattan Beach Jewish Center also in 2015 was awarded $25,0000 for brick masonry facade repairs.

• Congregation Ahavas Israel of Greenpoint in 2016 was granted $25,000 for masonry facade restoration and roof replacement.

• Congregation Baith Israel Anshei Emes (Kane Street Synagogue) in Cobble Hill in 2016 was granted $50,000 for comprehensive restoration of masonry facades and structural repairs to towers.

• The Jewish Center of Brighton Beach in 2016 was awarded $50,000 for Sandy flood recovery including roof and masonry restoration.

• The Park Slope Jewish Center in 2017 was awarded $40,000 for brick masonry facade restoration.

• Congregation Kol Israel, Crown Heights in 2017 was awarded $50,000 for masonry restoration and structural repairs to the exterior stair tower.

“These synagogues celebrate the history of American Judaism and remind us of Jewish American contributions to our collective culture and history,” said Peg Breen, president of the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

The time for wondering at the inventive genius of man has gone by, and now the wonder is what will he not accomplish. It was thought once that the limit was put when it was said that you could not make a machine think, but that holds no longer, for you can make mechanical applications take the place of thought. One of the prettiest ballads of the English language is the song of the “Singing Leaves.” It was thought a quaint conceit, a figment of fancy woven from the golden web of the poet’s brain, but the wonder has become a reality, and before me as I write lies the wonder. The marvel of “When the brook began to talk and the waters found a tongue” is as nothing compared to it.

Before me lies a strip of tin foil 18 inches long and 2 inches wide. As you take it up and look at it you see that its surface is grooved lengthwise, with fine grooves or creases. There are about thirty of them on the ribbon, equidistant, or about

1-15th of an inch apart. It looks like a ribbon of tin foil evenly creased from one end to the other, for ornament, “only that and nothing more.” Yet if you were to put that ribbon of tin foil into the little machine from whence it came, you would hear the jargon of a Dutch song, coupled with the clamor of other sounds and voices, which are imprinted upon it. That strip of tin foil and its fellows can sing, talk poetry, quote Shakespeare, bark, squeal, crow and so on ad infinitum, according to the several phases of speech that have been recorded upon them.

It is from the phonograph, a talking machine invented about two months ago by a gentleman named Thomas Edison, who was interested in the telephone, and at the time of the discovery was experimenting with that instrument.

It came about in this way, by accident – as very many great and wonderful inventions have come about. Doubtless every reader of the Eagle has seen Jackie Gleason

a telephone, and knows how they are made, and that you talk with a tube which you hold in your hand. Well, Mr. Edison was experimenting with the telephone, and was talking upon one of the diaphragms which he held in his fingers, and which was so arranged that its vibrations were felt upon

the vibrations of the human voice, and having recorded them could produce them again, and not only sounds but words! He began experimenting, and the result was the phonograph, the latest mechanical marvel. Mr. Edison resides in New Jersey, and does business in New York.

HOW SWEET IT WAS

Herbert John Gleason was born Bushwick, Brooklyn on Feb. 26, 1916. He attended P.S. 73 and played ball in the P.S. 137 schoolyard. He attended John Adams High School and was known to hang out in Saratoga Park.

At the beginning of the 1940s, Gleason played a few small roles as comic relief in such films as “Navy Blues” (1941), “Orchestra Wives” and “Springtime in the Rockies” (1942).

He couldn’t get the good parts he wanted in films so he deserted Hollywood for a career in other media.

Television proved a bonanza for Gleason. First there was the series “The Life of Riley” in which Gleason played a Brooklyn character, Chester A. Riley.

The “Jackie Gleason Show” became a top comedy show on the tube. It led to the spin-off series “The Honeymooners,” in which Gleason played Ralph Kramden, a Brooklyn bus driver, supported by Audrey Meadows as his wife, Alice; and Art Carney and Joyce Randolph as their neighbors Ed and Trixie Norton.

Gleason always boasted of his Brooklyn origins, and Brooklyn, in turn, can boast of one of its greatest stars.

In 1961, he returned to Hollywood in the role of the billiards shark Minnesota Fats in “The Hustler,” which won him a nomination for an Oscar as best supporting actor.

Life magazine said, “Gleason, who fled Hollywood because he could not get good parts, covers himself with glory.”

He again proved his acting abilities (both comedic and dramatic) in “Requiem for a Heavyweight” (1962), followed by other films including “Papa’s Delicate Decision” and “Soldier in the Rain” (1963), “Don’t Drink the Water” (1970) and “Smokey and the Bandit” (1977). His final role was in “Nothing in Common” (1986), alongside Tom Hanks.

Jackie Gleason died from liver cancer in 1987. Among his honors are his place on Brooklyn’s Celebrity Path at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. And “how sweet it is” that Brooklyn’s real-life Fifth Avenue Bus Depot was renamed the Jackie Gleason Depot.

WHITMAN’S TINY RED SCHOOL GOES ON BLOCK IN WOODBURY BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE • FEB. 26, 1927

The little red schoolhouse where Walt Whitman first taught at the tender age of 17 goes on the auction block here today.

If there is no bidder for the intimate relic of the poet’s early life, it will be torn down and its old timber used for scaffolding in the new schoolhouse the Village of Woodbury is to build. The old school now stands in the way of plans for the new building.

On several occasions public interest has been stimulated in Woodbury to save Walt Whitman’s old red schoolhouse, but no definite action has ever been taken. Some time ago it was suggested by the Rev. Floyd F. Worley, now of Woodhaven, but formerly pastor of a Woodbury church, that an adjoining lot be purchased and have the Walt Whitman school removed to it. This could be done for about $500, he said, but the plan never materialized.

It was in 1836 that a young man whose name later ranked first among the country’s poets came to Woodbury to teach. Pupils of all ages came to the little oneroom building.

As the town grew and the little school was no longer adequate, a larger one was built and the poet’s school was taken over in turn by several fraternal organizations. The Boy Scouts were the last to occupy it. For several years it has been vacant and its bright red boards have weathered to a dull lead shade.
