It’s Official: Gounardes Is Senator-Elect as Golden Concedes

One of the most closely watched races in New York State came to an end Monday morning as incumbent Republican state Sen. Marty Golden conceded the contest to Democratic challenger Andrew Gounardes, nearly two weeks after Election Day in Southwest Brooklyn’s 22nd Senate District.

“As the Board of Elections completes its final count of this year’s close election, I congratulate Andrew Gounardes and wish him well in his service to the people of the 22nd State Senate District,” Golden said in a statement.

At press time, the Board of Election was still counting absentee ballots, a process that began on Nov. 16, but with most of the ballots counted, Gounardes maintained a lead of more than 1,000 votes over Golden with a dwindling few election district left to count.

Golden realized he was running out of room to make up the difference in a vote count and decided to concede, a source told this newspaper.

The lawmaker, who was trailing by more than 1,000 on Election Night, Nov. 6, had previously refused to concede, opting instead to wait until all of the paper ballots were counted.

which Golden, a retired police officer, has represented since first winning election in 2002, takes in all or parts of several Southwest Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend, Marine Park and Gerritsen Beach.

Gounardes, chief counsel to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, released a statement soon afternoon Golden conceded.

“I look forward to coordinating with Senator Golden on a smooth transition between

now and January so that our community can come together and move forward,” the statement read in part.

For Golden, the concession was an admission that his 21year-long career in public service was over. Prior to winning election to the State Senate, Golden served as a City Council member from 1997 to 2002.

In his statement, Golden took the opportunity to reflect on his life in politics.

“On many levels, I am so proud of what I have accom-

plished for my city, my state and the neighbors I have been honored to represent. I fully embraced the awesome responsibility entrusted by the people who elected me. I strove each and everyday to make a positive difference for someone,” he said.

“Although we came up just short this election, I am grateful my career in public service has been full of much success as a police officer and as an elected official. As I think of the future, my supporters, neighbors and friends can be

sure that I will still always look for opportunities to make our neighborhoods an even better place to live, work and raise a family,” Golden stated.

Gounardes, who will take office in early January, is looking ahead to starting his new life as an elected official.

“Now that the election is over, I am grateful to people of Southern Brooklyn for their support and humbled by their trust in me to be our community’s voice in Albany. I look forward to going to Albany to fight for affordable health care,

a livable wage, a world-class education system, pedestrian safety, an MTA that is reliable, accessible and accountable to all, and equal protections for all of our citizens,” he said in his statement.

The victorious Gounardes also hinted that he doesn’t intend to waste any time.

“In the days since the election, my team and I have worked closely with Democratic leadership and my colleagues in the State Senate to ensure that I’m ready to hit the ground running,” he stated.

The group Transportation Alternatives is also a leading supporter of Sermons for Safe Streets.

Under Sermons for Safe Streets, members of the clergy of all faiths are being asked to use their pulpits to memorialize victims who have been killed in traffic crashes.

Families for Safe Streets was founded in Brooklyn by parents of people killed by reckless drivers.

Members of Families for Safe Streets mobilized this summer to organize protest rallies in front of state Sen. Marty Golden’s Bay Ridge office to call on the Republican lawmaker to push for legislation to keep speed cameras operating

in school zones.

The cameras were turned off on July 25 and re-instated

by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in late August under an emergency declaration.

Families for Safe Streets founder Amy Cohen, whose 12year-old son Sammy Eckstein was struck and killed on Prospect Park West five years ago, spoke at the Nov. 14 launch of Sermons for Safe Streets.

“How many people have to die on our streets? How many more families have to endure tragedy? Traffic deaths shouldn’t be a fact of life,” Cohen said.

“We are grateful to the faith leaders who are taking part in this initiative to amplify our message and confront this preventable public health crisis.”

As part of the new effort, Families for Safe Streets created a “clergy kit” that includes statistics, religious references, sample sermon snippets, collective prayers and other resources clergy members can use when speaking about the tragedy of car crashes.

Advocates are demanding state legislation in Albany and action at the city level that includes street redesign projects to increase safety for pedestrians.

The statistics are grim, according to Transportation Alternatives, which said that roughly 40,000 people are killed in traffic crashes every year in the U.S. Around the world, more than 3,000 people are killed in traffic crashes each day, the group said.

Marco Conner, deputy director of Transportation Alternatives, predicted that the voices of the religious leaders would make a big difference in the fight for safe streets.

“Eliminating traffic deaths here in New York and around the world requires us to have all hands on deck, so we welcome wholeheartedly the many religious leaders who are joining in this effort from across the five boroughs. In their congregations and at their places of worship, these faith leaders provide

support at the most soul-crushing times in so many people’s lives. We have no doubt that their powerful voices will resonate across our city, and ultimately help to save lives,” Conner said in a statement.

The de Blasio administration is committed to providing New Yorkers with safer crossings, according to Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, who said the mayor’s Vision Zero plan has reduced traffic-related deaths in the three years since it was launched.

“As traffic fatalities continue to reach historic lows under Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative, DOT will keep working to bring safety enhancements to more streets around the five boroughs, along with increased safety education and enforcement targeting the most deadly driving violations. Having faith leaders from different traditions echo this vital public-safety message from their pulpits this weekend will send an even more powerful and effective message,” Trottenberg said.

The launch of Sermons for Safe Streets was intended to coincide with New York City’s commemoration of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, an initiative of the United Nations in which citizens in cities around the world gather in public spaces to remember victims who were killed in car crashes. The day of remembrance took place on Nov. 18.

Transportation safety advocates and families of victims killed by reckless drivers are teaming up with religious leaders to put public pressure on elected officials to make streets safer under a new campaign.

“BILL-ZARD” OF 2018 Mayor de Blasio offered no apology for the inadequate response to the first snowstorm of the season. A welltracked Nor’easter, which dropped sleet and snow quickly on our streets, crippled the city for a full day.

Commuters were thrown under the bus or stuck behind a bus by the mayor’s lack of preparation. Thousands of commuters were stuck for hours on the West Side Highway and at the Port Authority Bus Terminal without transportation or information from authorities.

There has been no satisfactory explanation for this incredible failure. It could be due to the Port Authority’s total lack of accountability and gross mismanagement but why didn’t anyone warn commuters that they might not be able to return home after a hard day’s work because of a few inches of slush?

At a press conference, the mayor claimed he had experienced the same nightmares as everyone else because he was delayed for 25 minutes and late for a scheduled appearance.

Really? The six-inch slushstorm that froze the nation’s largest city and left citizens frantic on the road after six, 10 and 12 hours of frustration was “crazy traffic” for Hizzoner that forced him to languish for 25 minutes on the FDR in his chauffeured SUV. Real New Yorkers tried to fend off apoplexy and insanity during hours of gridlock on area roadways. Mr.de Blasio claimed, “We all go through the same exact experience.”

Nonsense! He is disconnected from what real New Yorkers deal with every day.

He admitted that the delays caused frustrations for drivers and parents wondering about school children.

The situation required lead-

ership and strength, two qualities noticeably absent in Mr. de Blasio’s free-spending, freelove second administration. It’s as if a flower power persona has emerged in the absence of reelection worries. He is advocating increasing the city’s bloated bureaucracy, and eliminating qualifications for special high schools all while divesting himself from responsibility for the city’s failed services.

The buck must stop somewhere. If the mayor from Red Sox Land can’t own up or man up, then the City Council must step up and provide leadership. “Don’t Blame me Bill” said, “I am very frustrated with what happened. I think it was a horrible experience for New Yorkers.” He should have said, “I’m sorry … I got this wrong … I will make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”

This was no “perfect storm.”

Rather, it was a perfect example of a smug mayor more preoccupied with bringing big development to residential neighborhoods than concerned with the day-to-day operation of the city.

He is unwilling to take responsibility for malfeasance, large and small, that still exists

in the city. Whether it’s developers who donate and receives sweet deals or business owners who co-opt the city’s enforcement agents or the lackadaisical enforcement of the law, it is all eating away at the quality of life in the city.

Quality of life is undermined by the invasion of homeless panhandlers that visitors step over or citizens endure in a subway car every day. The underperforming subway and inadequate transportation services will be the undoing of the Big Apple’s renaissance. We need roads and rails that work more than we need more bicycle lanes.

A great city makes contingency plans and more contingency plans for the worst-case scenarios. The Sanitation

Department deployed fewer than half the snowplows normally used during a big snowstorm. Really?

Trees and tree limbs weighed down by the precipitation snapped and closed roads. The city should spend more money pruning and caring for its trees before spending to plant one million more.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson apologized for the city’s slushstorm failure.

He promised a thorough and transparent review and a plan “to make sure this doesn’t happen again.” Bravo.

If he works with his colleagues, including our own Justin Brannan, then we can hope not to repeat this colossal fail later this season when the snow really starts to fall.

Frontus Moves Forward with Plans for Think Tank

A newly elected lawmaker whose out-of-the-box ideas attracted a great deal of attention on the campaign trail is moving forward with a proposal to establish a Southwest Brooklyn version of a Washington-type think tank.

Dyker Heights Civic Association Tuesday night, Nov. 13, Democratic Assemblymember-elect Mathylde Frontus said she is eager to get started.

Chief among her goals, she said, is to set up “the first ever Southern Brooklyn Community Think Tank to discuss the top priorities we will be working on.”

would serve as a forum for ideas and would be tasked with coming up with inventive new proposals on improving the quality of life for residents, Frontus said during the campaign.

Frontus won election to an open seat in the 46th Assembly District (Coney Island-Dyker Heights-Bay Ridge) on Nov. 6 and announced at the civic

association meeting that she would be sworn into office on Nov. 15.

Frontus defeated Republican Steve Saperstein to win the election. The reason the Assembly seat was open, and why Frontus has to take office immediately rather than wait until the new legislative session begins in January, is that the post is vacant due to the resignation

of former Assemblymember Pamela Harris. Harris, a Democrat, pleaded guilty to fraud charges and was sentenced to six months in prison by a federal judge.

Another lawmaker, Assemblymember Peter Abbate, a Democrat who represents parts of Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst, also spoke at the civic association meeting.

Abbate, who defeated Conservative candidate Rosemary Mangino in the election, is entering his 12th term in the state Assembly.

Lawmakers are not waiting until January to get to work, according to Abbate, who said a meeting has been planned for right after Thanksgiving to go over issues like transit and health care. “There’s a whole agenda in Albany,’ he told residents at the meeting, which took place at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Hall, 1072 80th St. The think tank plan was

one of several proposals Frontus promoted during the recently-completed campaign.

In an effort to increase civic engagement, Frontus said she would sponsor workshops for people interested in running for public office. She also floated a proposal to have the discretionary budget items of every lawmaker listed online so that voters can see what programs and organizations their assemblymembers and state senators are funding.

Tuesday was not the first time Frontus has attended a Dyker Heights Civic Association meeting, but it marked her first appearance there as an assemblymember-elect.

Frontus a Coney Island resident, said she has been coming to the civic association’s meetings since January. “I’m a friend. I’m an ally. I understand the heartbeat of the community,” she told residents at the meeting.

Mysterious Bay Ridge ‘Bing’ Attributed To Verizon-Sanctioned Liftboat

The elusive Bay Ridge “bing” may be a mystery no more.

A three-legged liftboat spotted over the weekend in the waters near the VerrazzanoNarrows Bridge is the cause of the sound heard ‘round the hood, Councilmember Justin Brannan proclaimed Sunday, Nov. 18.

The noise — described by local residents as an ominous “bing” which mirrored the sound of “metal on metal” — became a hot topic on social media when Brannan, earlier this month, asked community members if they’d also heard the “mysterious bing.” “[It] sorta sounds like an enormous grommet banging on a giant flagpole,” he wrote on Facebook.

Just one of Brannan’s posts — the question was posted to various group pages — has since garnered over 150 responses, the better part of them a resounding “yes.”

Local resident Donna Russo told this paper that, until Brannan’s post in a group called “Bay Ridge Parents,” she’d thought she might be going crazy.

“That bing drove me nuts!” she said. “I had to ask my daughter if she heard it as well. I thought I was losing my mind.

When I saw the post on BRP I felt better that it wasn’t only me.”

Facebook) — is loudest in the early morning hours, though it has also been heard at night. It has also been recorded by residents on all ends of the nabe.

Russo, who lives in the 90s, said she has heard it more than once in a given day.

“It was funny, as I would hear it early in the mornings and then again when I got to work later in the day,” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh no, I

truly am losing my mind, and now it’s following me!’”

The sound, Russo’s neighbor Matthew Kabel said, brought him back to his childhood.

“When Justin posted about the bing weeks ago, I said it sounded exactly like when I was a kid in Buffalo and we had to bang poles into the ground for our snow fences,” he told this paper, adding that,

when going for a run by the water Sunday, the structure stopped him in his tracks. “[I had a real] WTF moment,” he said.

According to Levingston Offshore, “The Worldwide Pioneer of Liftboat,” the watercraft is a “self-propelled, multipurpose, self-elevating vessel” most often used to carry equipment in support of mineral exploration or other offshore

construction activities.

This one in particular, Community Board 10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann said, had been contracted by Verizon to determine whether or not it could drill fiber-optic cables there in the future.

“They started in Staten Island and they’ll only be here for a few more days,” she told this paper Monday morning, Nov. 19.

When asked if she, herself, had heard the bing, Beckmann said no, but that it was clear by the flood of phone calls the board’s district office received that most of Bay Ridge most certainly did.

It’s unclear as of press time whether the liftboat is responsible for the mysterious bing, as the vessel is said to have arrived in local waters after Brannan’s initial posting.

Foundation Urges Donors to Think Local on Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is coming up on Nov. 27, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and people everywhere are probably planning to give in to their generous impulses by making donations to their favorite charities on that day.

But leaders of the Brooklyn Community Foundation are urging the borough’s residents to think local on Giving Tuesday and donate their hardearned money to Brooklynbased charities.

Two years ago, the foundation launched a #BrooklynGives campaign aimed at spreading the word about the importance of helping do-gooders close to home on Giving Tuesday.

The campaign is still going strong, according to the foundation, which has set a goal of raising more than $1 million for community-based non-profit organizations in Brooklyn on #GivingTuesday.

And the foundation is putting its money where its mouth is.

The foundation and its #BrooklynGives sponsors (National Grid, Santander Bank, Sugar in the Raw, Kirkland Ellis, Cleary Gottlieb and Industry City) will underwrite additional donations throughout the day.

Donations must be made on the campaign’s website at www.BrooklynGives.org be-

tween midnight and 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 27. The fundraising campaign is open to any Brooklyn-based 501c3 nonprofit organization. To date, more than 150 organizations have registered to be featured on the campaign’s website, according to the foundation.

Donations of any amount are welcome, foundation leaders said.

Cecilia Clarke, president and CEO of the Brooklyn Community Foundation, said #BrooklynGives is on track to becoming “the most charitable 24 hours in Brooklyn thanks to the incredible generosity of all those who care deeply about Brooklyn’s communities and the nonprofits that make our borough great.”

The campaign is valuable for another reason, according to Clarke, who said it can help Brooklyn residents become better acquainted with the charities within their midst.

“This campaign makes it easy to discover and support effective and inspiring organizations right in our own backyards, while participating in the largest single day of giving in the world, Giving Tuesday,” Clarke said.

and Cyber Monday. People were encouraged to take a few minutes out of their day to donate to worthy causes.

In 2017, nonprofit organizations raised over $300 million online on Giving Tuesday, according to the Brooklyn Community Foundation.

The foundation’s Giving Tuesday efforts will also include a $100,000 match program for the 20 organizations that wind up as finalists for the annual Spark Prize, a program honoring Brooklyn’s leading nonprofits.

Founded in 2009, the foundation and its donors have provided over $35 million in grants to more than 300 nonprofit organizations.

Giving Tuesday will start with a bang on Nov. 27 as the foundation hosts an official #BrooklynGives Kickoff Celebration in National Grid’s Auditorium, at 1 Metro Tech, starting at 8 a.m.

The kickoff, which is free, will feature panel discussions moderated by Errol Louis, host of Spectrum News NY1’s “Inside City Hall,” Heather McGhee, a nationally known progressive activist and David Belt, founder of New Lab at the Brooklyn Navy Yard).

“The collaborative effort of #BrooklynGives supports local organizations that have a shared commitment to making the Brooklyn community stron-ger.

We are pleased to help lead the Brooklyn Community Foundation’s effort to celebrate and encourage Brooklyn’s changemakers,” said Rudy Wynter, president and COO of National Grid Transmission, Generation and Energy Procurement.

Meanwhile, non-profit groups all over the borough are gearing up for Giving Tuesday, hoping that their fellow Brooklynites open their hearts and wallets.

Karen Tadross, president of Bay Ridge Cares, said her group is looking forward to accepting donations.

“One of the benefits of donating to an organization like Bay Ridge Cares is that your contribution is used to help your neighbors. We do not spend money on rent. We work out of our homes and we have no overhead, so 100 percent of donations that come in go directly into helping people in crisis locally,” Tadross told this newspaper via email.

Bay Ridge Cares, which was founded in 2012 by a group of local residents that included Councilmember Justin Brannan, prepared and delivered tens of thousands of hot meals to Superstorm Sandy survivors.

The group also delivers turkey dinners to the frail elderly and the disabled every Thanksgiving.

No Holiday Embargo for 86th Street Elevator Work

ay Ridge’s busiest shopping street is about to get a bit busier.

Construction on an elevator at the 86th Street subway station on the R line will continue through the holiday shopping season, despite prior agreements with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to suspend the work for the holiday season, Community Board 10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann has confirmed.

The purpose of the “holiday embargo” is to ease congestion around the holidays, when locals and visitors alike flock to the Ridge’s largest shopping strip, but, due to “unforeseen utility conflicts,” Councilmember Justin Brannan said, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a waiver on the hiatus, to keep the 26-month-long project on schedule.

“Originally we told the MTA they would need to button things up and hit pause in time for Thanksgiving because 86th Street gets even more chaotic around the holidays,” the pol explained, adding that, contrary to the earlier agreement, the contractor will maintain regular weekday work hours.

Construction began on

June 1, and has already wreaked havoc for local businesses, Beckmann told this paper.

“I’ve never experienced a waiver of a holiday embargo and I think that the impact this is going to have on local residents and businesses is going to be huge,” she said.

“Those merchants there, especially on Fourth Avenue, have already lost so much because of construction, and because of the relocation of the buses.”

Holiday shopping aside, Beckmann said, the board is also worried about winter weather amidst construction.

“Our concerns here at the board are certainly for the businesses and even for snow removal, which would be a concern near that intersection no matter what, but now, with construction, is even more so,” she said. “Making sure the streets are clear and accessible to pedestrians is even more difficult with the staging and construction remaining in place through the holidays.”

The 86th Street Business Improvement District (BID), Beckmann said, is working to try and address some of the merchants’ concerns on the ground.

“We certainly support their efforts,” she said.

The project – slated to last into the summer of 2020 – technically dates back to 2004 when the neighborhood’s 95th Street station

was chosen as one of 100 key stations to become Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible. However, 13 years later, the MTA decided, instead, to transform the hub one stop over.

In total, the project consists of two elevators, one connecting the street and the mezzanine on one side of the turnstiles, and another connecting the mezzanine to the train platform on the other. It will be done in phases, with a controversial bump-out coming to the southeast corner of 86th Street and Fourth Avenue (where the elevator will sit) to create a barrier between moving traffic and riders.

On the other side of the street, a new staircase will be built. Once it opens, the existing staircase at the foot of Mocha Mocha will be made over, the better to accommodate rider traffic on the commercial corridor.

This is the first phase of the project, during which buses that stop there will be located one block ahead. It will take approximately six months.

Next, Melissa Farley, assistant director of Government and Community Relations at the MTA told community residents prior to the start of construction, workers will reconfigure the sidewalk across the street and implement a curb extension and another new staircase.

Farley said, to accommodate the upgrade better), with the coming elevator to be installed in between them.

As a whole, the project will take about two years and end with a total of five entry points, including the elevator.

This is just the beginning of elevator installation at stations in southwest Brooklyn. State Sen. Marty Golden announced earlier this summer that an elevator at 95th Street as well as another at the multi-line 59th Street station are also coming down the pipeline.

The two new elevators, he said, are a part of a capital amendment which also includes funding of more than $300 million for signal and track work critical to enhancing service reliability

as part of the Subway Action Plan, first approved by the MTA board in December, 2017.

Despite the inevitable inconvenience the holiday construction will cause, Brannan is looking at the bigger picture and hoping the end will more than justify the project’s means.

“Any big infrastructure project will bring unavoidable disruptions during construction so it’s important to assess the long and shortterm impacts, both good and bad,” he told this paper.

“I saw how the extended tunnel construction on the Second Avenue Subway in Manhattan wreaked havoc on nearby small businesses.

“While the 86th Street elevator project is much more limited in scope, it

has already been quite disruptive so it’s something we must keep an eye on,” he went on. “That said, the ADA is a civil right statute and our subway stations absolutely must be made accessible to all. We’ve been waiting decades for these elevators. In the end, I’m confident the permanent benefits will outweigh the temporary burdens.”

Brannan said that any businesses that are facing challenges because of the construction should contact his office for assistance.

When contacted for comment, a spokesperson for the MTA told this paper, "This is work aimed at bringing fully accessible station access to the area. It’s essential that we do this to keep the project on schedule."

Coney Island Prepares for 115th Annual Polar Bear Plunge

t’s almost time to head into the ice cold surf to help raise money for the Coney Island community.

The Polar Bear Plunge, a historic, time-honored tradition, is now celebrating its 115th year, and it’s almost time to grit your teeth and sign up for all the freezing fun.

The plunge, taking place on January 1, is a free event; however, individuals and teams must register to participate and are encouraged to fundraise for the cause.

Hearty swimmers dive into the waves at last year’s Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge. registration will open at 10 a.m., and the first wave of plungers starts at 1 p.m. sharp.

Last year, despite freezing temperatures, the plunge raised over $40,000. For 2019, the goal

is to raise $80,000 which will all go toward local Coney Island nonprofits including the Alliance for Coney Island, the New York Aquarium, Coney Island USA, and the Coney Island History Project as well as

other arts and community organizations. In the past decade, the club has raised over $500,000 to support charities.

The money helps fund free events such as Friday night fireworks, arts

programs, and various environmental and educational programs. The money is also used to improve quality-of-life issues and support workforce development programs for the Coney Island neighborhood, which is home to over 50,000 residents.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the oldest winter bathing organization in the United States. Members swim in the Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island every Sunday from November through April. Since 1903, they have been hosting a public New Year’s Day Plunge for all brave souls to usher in the year ahead.

“We are excited to ring in 2019 with the iconic annual

Polar Bear Plunge and to partner with the Coney Island Polar Bear Club to raise funds for local Coney Island nonprofits,” Alliance for Coney Island Executive Director Alexandra Silversmith told this paper. “As we celebrate 115 years of this tradition, we invite all New Yorkers to join us and make it a record-setting plunge!”

The not-for-profit Alliance for Coney Island is a private-public partnership dedicated to continuing the year-round revitalization of Coney Island.

A man was stabbed multiple times in the early morning hours of Sat., Nov. 17 after an altercation at a Gravesend bar that, cops say, has been a hotspot for the 62nd Precinct.

According to authorities, around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, two men stepped outside the Tijuana Sports Bar at 475 Kings Highway to fight when one of the men was pushed to the ground and stabbed multiple times “throughout the body.”

The 37-year-old victim — who had stab wounds in his upper body and abdomen — was removed to NYC Health + Hospitals/ Coney Island where he’s since been listed in stable condition.

Cops say the attacker fled the scene in a taxi.

Cops Seek Four Suspects Wanted for Robbing Woman in Sunset Park

ops are seeking four suspects wanted for robbing a woman in Sunset Park.

According to authorities, on Wednesday November 14, at around 12:10 p.m., the four teenage suspects approached the victim at 59th Street and Eighth Avenue.

One of them tried to snatch her phone from her hands.

It fell to the sidewalk, and another one of the crooks picked it up before shoving the victim in the face when she tried to chase the trio.

The suspect that nabbed the phone fled northbound on Eighth Avenue while two others acted as lookouts during the crime.

Police described the first suspect as a light-skinned female, 16-18 years old; she was last seen wearing a white and red hooded jacket, blue jeans and dark colored sneakers.

The second suspect is described as a dark-skinned female, 16-18 years old; she was last seen wearing a green hooded jacket, gray leggings and beige boots.

The third suspect is described as a dark-skinned female, 16-18 years old; she was last seen wearing a black hooded sweater, blue jeans and red sneakers.

The fourth suspect is a dark-skinned female, 1618 years old; she was last seen wearing a black long sleeved shirt, black pants and white sneakers.

ELECTRONICS STORE ROBBED: An electronics store at 65th Street and 20th Avenue was robbed at gunpoint by four men on Fri., Nov. 16. Reports say that at around 10:34 p.m., the victim, a female employee of the store, was approached by one of the perps. When she asked if he wanted to buy a phone, the crook took out a gun, pointed it at her head and demanded money, while the other three perps — all wearing ski masks — ran into the store and stole various devices and $200. They then fled the scene. No arrests have been made.

VICTIMS ROBBED AT GUNPOINT: Two people were robbed at gunpoint at 80th Street and Sixth Avenue on Fri., Nov. 16 at around 11 p.m. by three men, two of whom were packing heat. Reports say that the victims, one a 21-year-old man, were on the sidewalk when the three perps drove up in a 2017 Toyota Camry with Florida plates. Two of the crooks got out of the car, took out silver handguns and demanded money. The two then struck the victims with the pistols on the back of the head. The crooks stole $120 and fled southbound on Sixth Avenue. No arrests have been made.

MAN BEATEN AND ROBBED ON BENSON: A 24-year-old man was beaten and robbed at Benson Avenue and 18th Avenue on Sat., Nov. 17 at around 5:21 p.m. Cops say the man was approached by the unknown perp who simulated having a gun in his right jacket pocket.

The crook then told the victim to follow him. They went westbound on Benson Avenue, then turned northbound on Bay 17th Street. The crook stole $480 from the victim’s wallet as well as jewelry and credit cards. He then fled towards 86th Street on foot. No arrests have been made.

MAN BUSTED FOR ALLEGEDLY BEATING VICTIM: A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a 41-year-old man with a blunt object at 15th Avenue and 73rd Street on Fri., Nov. 16. According to reports, at around 7:20 p.m., the assailant allegedly struck the victim several times and punched him in the face. The alleged attacker then took the victim’s money and cellphone before fleeing on foot. He was later apprehended by police who saw the victim’s phone in his possession.

MAN ARRESTED IN ASSAULTING WOMAN: A man was arrested and charged with assaulting a 29-year-old woman on 95th Street between Marine Avenue and Shore Road on Sat., Nov. 17. According to reports, at around 9:30 p.m., the suspect, described to police as the victim’s landlord, allegedly hit her on her back with an open hand, causing bruising and pain.

FOODIES: Thieves lifted $9,488 from a truck parked on Bay Ridge Parkway between Ridge Boulevard and Third Avenue on Fri., Nov. 16 at around 3:18 p.m., while the driver was delivering food to a nearby supermarket. The truck had been left unattended with the doors unlocked. No arrests have been made.

CROOK NABS WALLET: A 43-year-old woman living near 63rd Street and 11th Avenue was the victim of a pickpocket on Sat., Nov. 17. Cops say the thief grabbed the victim’s wallet and used a card inside to go shopping at a pharmacy. The victim last remembered having her wallet at around 7:20 p.m. when she was at 92nd Street and Fourth Avenue. When she got home, she realized someone had nabbed it. The following day at around 2 p.m., her bank called to inform her about the unauthorized charges. No arrests have been made.

BAD MOVIE EXPERIENCE: A 60-year-old man had his wallet lifted inside a movie theater at Fifth Avenue and 68th Street on Sat., Nov. 17 after he put his coat, which had the wallet inside the pocket, in the row in front of him in the theater. When he left, he took the coat and saw that the wallet, containing credit cards, was missing. No arrests have been made.

Police Seek Man Wanted for Several nd Burglaries in 62 Precinct

olice are seeking a man wanted for nine burglaries in the Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Gravesend areas between September and November.

Cops say, in total, the suspect has made off with some $200,000 worth of clothes, jewelry and cash during his extended spree.

According to authorities, the first incident occurred on Fri., Sept.28 at around 7 a.m., when the suspect went inside a home near 18th Avenue and 79th Street, gaining access through the rear window. After ransacking the home, he left without stealing anything.

On Sat., Oct. 13 at around 10 a.m., he entered a home near Bath Avenue and 25th Street through a rear basement window and stole $16,000 worth of cash and jewelry.

On Mon., Oct. 15 at around

2:30 p.m., the suspect broke into a home near Benson Avenue and Bay 35th Street, and stole $36,000 worth of money and jewelry.

Then on Fri., Oct. 19, at around 12 p.m., in the vicinity of Highlawn Avenue and West 17th Street, he broke into a home through a rear window. Once inside, he stole $700 worth of jewelry.

Later that day at around 8 p.m., near Bath Avenue and 25th Avenue, the suspect entered another home through a rear window but didn’t steal anything.

Then on Tues., Oct. 23 at around 8 a.m., he broke into another home near 15th Avenue and 76th Street through a rear window.

Once inside, he removed $600 worth of jewelry and cash.

On Thurs., Oct.25 at around 9:30 a.m., the suspect broke into a home near 19th Avenue and 72nd Street and stole $117,000 worth of jewelry and cash from a safe.

Then he broke into a

home near 67th Street and 17th Avenue on Fri., Nov. 2 at around 8 a.m., and stole nearly $3,000 worth of clothing.

Finally on Weds., Nov. 7 at around 1:40 p.m., the suspect broke into a home near 19th Avenue and 66th Street through a front window, and stole $1,000.

“I think there are very legitimate concerns about displacement,” Chair of CB 7 Cesar Zuniga told this paper. “There are a lot of passionate folks speaking out against Industry City’s plan to rezone but there are people that want genuinely to understand more on both sides. There are also local businesses that are part of the IC complex and they came out and voiced their opinions. For me, some really good ideas came out of the meeting and some of the ideas really aligned with some of the work that we’re doing at the community board.”

One of those suggestions was that Industry City commit to investing in a land trust and an affordable housing trust.

“That’s a compelling idea because, in conjunction with these hearings, we’re going to study the feasibility of building more affordable housing in Sunset Park,” Zuniga said. “There is a relationship between the rezoning and displacement and how it affects gentrification, but I don’t think the solution to the affordable housing issue is voting the rezoning up

or down. The real solution to the affordable housing crisis is public policy. We have to get elected officials and developers to understand what we need in the community is to build more affordable housing.”

Kimball, for his part, told this paper, “I think that Industry City is part of the answer, not part of the problem. Creating good-paying jobs for the middle class is what we need in this city, and taking a site that was mostly vacant and derelict for 50 years and bringing it back to life as a job creation engine is a good thing. The answer to increased rental and purchase costs in the community is building more affordable housing and workforce housing.”

Another issue is what the plan would mean for small businesses.

“They’re important to our community,” Yeampierre said. “Already there are leases that are not being renewed along the waterfront. Industry City is looking beyond its own space to expand. Small businesses are disappearing. These are the entry to the middle class for a lot of immigrants who have a dream of how to prosper in the United States.”

She also opined that, although locals may get a job at IC, they won’t be able to live in Sunset Park.

IC has “missed the opportunity to do something truly innovative,” Yeampierre said. “What they’ve done

is recreate Williamsburg or Chelsea. Nothing that would incentivize the local economy while addressing the needs of the region.

They didn’t do that. They could have.”

That perception may have spurred some of the anger expressed at the hearing.

“I do think people were just angry with some of (Kimball’s) responses,” Zuniga said. “That’s not to say he wasn’t trying but I think the context didn’t lend itself for a real backand-forth to drill down on some specifics.

“If the community is going to make well-informed decisions, we have to have good data,” he stressed. “I’m not sure what the answer is, but I’m more than willing to work with Industry City to come up with some clear-cut accountability structure. I have to trust that there’s a willingness on their end to make some of the data available but we also have to figure out how to be consumers of that data and create a structure where we’re being transparent about the data sources and what it is telling us.”

The chairperson remains neutral on the plan.

“I honestly believe my role is to facilitate a conversation,” he said. “I may not get it right but I’m trying hard to do the right thing as a facilitator and bring multiple voices to the table. We have to do the work even if it’s messy or uncomfortable.”

ULURP should commence shortly, Zuniga said. Once the clock starts ticking, CB 7 has 60 days to review the proposal and issue a recommendation.

At that point, the proposal goes to the borough president, who has 30 days to review it and issue a recommendation before it is sent to the CPC, which has 60 days to render a verdict on it. Finally, the proposal is sent to the City Council, which has 50 days to vote it up or down, or make modifications. Once the City Council votes to approve a zoning change, the mayor has five days to veto it before it becomes law.

Our Lady of Grace Welcomes Santa to Annual Christmas Fair

Gravesend got into the giving spirit the weekend before Thanksgiving as Our Lady of Grace hosted its annual Breakfast with Santa and Christmas Fair on Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18.

The event took place in the parish’s school gym, located at 385 Avenue W. The weekend fair was chock full of activities including vendors selling new and used items, a breakfast and pictures with Santa, raffles, and hot and cold food and desserts.

“It was great,” said organizer Mary Ann De Luca, lending thanks to the local Boy Scouts as well as the parish school’s students who helped decorate the space for the holidays. “I think people look forward to it every year.”

De Luca also gave a shout-out

to Faith Formation Director Phyllis Norinsky who decorates the space’s tree “better than Rockefeller Center.”

That, coupled with the handmade decoration from students, De Luca said, help to tie the event together.

“Not only does it look nice but, since it's done by them, it’s really special if the kids or the parents come in,” she said.

“When you walk in, it’s a nice homey look.”

The event — which does phenomenally well for some of its vendors — holds a special place in De Luca’s heart, and so do its usual participants.

“Some vendors come all the way from Staten Island, and some have even been with me since 2001,” she told this paper.

De Luca began putting together the annual fair in 2001 after the death of the previous

organizer.

“I took it over because I really didn’t want the event to die,” she told this paper. “It’s just really special.”

This year’s breakfast saw almost 100 children, she added.

On December 8th, 2018 one of Brooklyn’s most visible churches, Sacred Hearts – St. Stephen, will turn on a giant five foot star atop its two hundred and ten foot tall steeple to mark the coming Christmas Season as rising singer Charlie Romo entertains. The church steeple is seen by thousands of drivers who travel daily along the BQE – Gowanus trench north of the Gov. Hugh Carey Tunnel. The Steeple is also the only church steeple still visible from the Brooklyn Bridge and numerous other points along New York Harbor.

The Christmas Star and four strands of LED lights each over two hundred feet in length will grace the 140 year old facade of the gothic church until the end of the Christmas Season in January.

Under the direction of the Pastor, Rev. Msgr. Guy Massie, the tradition, begun in the 1950s, will continue this year with added star power thanks to the generous offer of Charlie Romo to lend his voice to the night’s count down festivities starting the un-official Christmas season. The young and talented Romo, who has been likened to Bobby Darin, Dean Martin and Michael Buble, offered to provide a concert of time honored holiday songs this year after reflecting on his many childhood memories of seeing the star every time his parents took him to Manhattan during Christmas time. Romo recalled, “as a child seeing the star atop Sacred Hearts – St Stephen tower

as we drove through Brooklyn to Manhattan at Christmas was an essential part of our annual family pilgrimages to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, the Rockettes at Radio City and the giant nativity scene at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Crowds will be entertained with time honored classic carols as well as holiday favorites made famous by Frank Sinatra, Elvis and Burl Ives.

Parish Pastor, Msgr. Guy Massie, has said, “lighting the Star of Hope this year with the help and energy of such a great young talent as Charlie Romo is just another thing that makes Brooklyn so special. Our parish community displays this Star as a reminder to all that in this big city the light of the Star shines for the Hope of Peace found in the songs we sing and the prayers we hold deep in our hearts.”

Following the lighting refreshments will be served in the church lobby for all the community to enjoy.

The resultant exhibition, Brooklyn: A New Home, a New Life, features stories about historical Brooklynites: Harriet Judson, John Roebling, Nathan Handwerker, and Shirley Chisholm, as well as Ravi Ragbir, a contemporary immigration activist. Frances Bronet Inaugurated as Pratt’s First Female President

Pratt Institute made history earlier this month with the inauguration of the school’s first female president.

Frances Bronet is a historic figure at Pratt Institute for another reason.

She is the first president to have a background in architecture, according to school officials. She was appointed earlier this year but her official inauguration didn’t take place until Fri., Nov. 2.

Bronet is the 12th president in the school’s 131-year history.

Founded in 1887 as a school for the study of art and architecture, Pratt Institute’s main campus is located at 200 Willoughby Ave. in Clinton Hill. The school also operates a satellite campus at 144 West 14th St. in Manhattan and a third location in Utica.

Prior to coming to Pratt Institute, Bronet served as the senior vice president and provost at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Her academic career also includes leadership roles at the University of Oregon and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

She holds degrees in architecture and engineering from McGill University. She was licensed by the Ordre des Architectes du Quebec in 1982, and practiced in New York and Canada.

She owned her own architecture practice in Montreal.

Professor Award for excellence in teaching, research and service.

Bronet has made presentations in the U.S. and around the world on topics such as leadership and education, the

continuum of art and science learning and design and entrepreneurship.

Bronet is married to Jeff Paules. They have two children, Ileana and Asher.

Keep Your Brain in Shape With Better Hearing

H

earing loss can lead to many difficulties in everyday situations. The ability to understand a speaker can depend on factors other than hearing sensitivity. A normal hearing listener would struggle in a situation with background noise, competing signals, and lack of visual or contextual cues.

These effects are magnified for a listener with impaired hearing.

As approximately 37.5 million Americans suffer from hearing loss, according to the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), here are some common signs of hearing loss to look out for:

Unmanaged hearing loss can lead to a higher risk of isolation, social withdrawal, anxiety, depression, fatigue, memory loss, and is shown to have a higher correlation with the development of dementia. A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society has found that the rate of cognitive decline was slowed by 75% following the use of hearing aids to manage a hearing loss. While cognitive decline cannot be stopped, this rate of reduction is considered to be significant and substantial.

It is important to remember that hearing loss can affect our pediatric population as well. Universal newborn hearing screenings (NBHS) are now mandatory for all newborns. Early detection and intervention of hearing loss in newborns is essential in promoting speech, language, social, and cognitive development.

Take a Stroll on Marcy Avenue, Part One

A Montrose Morris mansion and a NYCHA project where Jay-Z grew up.

You can find both on Marcy Avenue.

This historic road leads through the heart of BedfordStuyvesant and into Williamsburg.

It’s an excellent avenue for an autumn walk. Wear your fingerless gloves. You’ll want to take snapshots of landmarks like Romanesque Revival-style Boys’ High School at 832 Marcy Ave. and Queen Annestyle 232 Hancock St., which was designed by the beloved architect Montrose Morris.

We’ve split our stroll into two parts since we can’t fit everything we want to show you into a single story. This is Part One.

‘To the Victor Belong the Spoils’ According to the book “Brooklyn by Name” by Leonard Benardo and Jennifer Weiss, the avenue is named after William Learned Marcy.

The 19th-century politician’s career included service as a U.S. Senator from New York and three terms as New York’s Governor. And he was the U.S. Secretary of State under President Franklin Pierce in the 1850s.

Marcy has a place in the history books especially because of a phrase he inspired, which is “the spoils system.”

In an 1832 speech, he said, “To the victor belong the spoils of the enemy.”

He was referring to newly elected politicians’ practice of rewarding campaign workers by appointing them to government

‘Mathematical Star’ and Romanesque-Revival Rowhouses We started our walk where Marcy Avenue ends, which is on Fulton Street in Bed-Stuy.

At the outset of our journey, we saw a nifty piece of public art — Ellen Harvey’s marble, ceramic and glass mosaic called “Mathematical Star,” which is embedded in the concrete pavement of Marcy Plaza.

The circular mosaic, which is 20 feet in diameter, resembles a quilt. The quilt pieces are patterns inspired by the architectural details of 18 neighborhood sites.

Marcy Avenue runs through the Bedford Historic District, which the city Landmarks Preservation Commission designated in 2015.

There are eye-catching 19thcentury brownstones and ornate brick rowhouses on nearly every Marcy Avenue corner of these landmarked blocks.

For instance, conjoined brick homes at 117 and 119 Macon St. have a barrelshaped window bay and arched doorways. According to the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the Bedford Historic District, Levi Fowler & Son designed the houses in a combination Romanesque Revival-Renaissance Revival architectural style and built them in 1894.

City Finance Department records indicate that an LLC with Joseph Anscher as a member bought 117 Macon St. for $1.8 million last year, city Finance Department records show. He heads a realestate development business, his LinkedIn profile says.

The city Buildings Department recently issued a renovation permit for 117 Macon St.

adjacent row of shorter neoGrec brownstones at 104 to 110 Macon St. Amzi Hill designed and constructed them in 1886 and 1887.

He and his son Henry Hill worked together as architects in Brooklyn during the second half of the 19th century. Neo-Grec is the architectural style for which Amzi Hill was best known.

Nearby on the corner of Marcy Avenue and Hancock Street, you can find the Montrose Morris-designed mansion that we mentioned at the beginning of this story. Next to it, there’s a row of Queen Annestyle brick rowhouses that Morris designed as well.

Advance Australia Fair On another Marcy Avenue corner in the historic district, there’s a Romanesque Revival-Renaissance Revival house at 272 Jefferson Ave.

that Dixon Advisory USA has renovated and turned it into a single-family home.

This brownstone was built in 1889.

The property owner is a unit of an Australian realestate investment firm that has been purchasing and rehabbing rowhouses in historic Brooklyn neighborhoods.

Dixon bought 272 Jefferson Ave. from “the people of the state of New York, by the grace of God, free and independent” — that’s the wording on the deed — for $1,632,946 in 2013.

It previously housed a nonresidential state Office of Children and Family Services facility.

Three Cheers For James Naughton Nearby there’s landmarked Boys’ High School, which we mentioned earlier. It was built

in 1891.

The brick and terra cotta school, which has frontage on Putnam Avenue and Madison Street, looks like an enormous castle with a supertall tower on one corner of it.

The spectacular building now serves as a home to charter schools.

The school’s designer, James Naughton, was the Superintendent of Buildings for the Board of Education of the City of Brooklyn.

“An Architectural Guidebook to Brooklyn” by Francis Morrone says Naughton was born in Ireland and educated at the University of Wisconsin and Cooper Union.

Another individual city landmark, St. George’s Episcopal Church, is located at 800 Marcy Ave. on the corner of Gates Avenue.

He was a gifted architect in his own right and the son of revered church designer Richard Upjohn. Their most important contribution to Brooklyn’s built environment is their joint design of GreenWood Cemetery’s magnificent main gates.

As for St. George’s, it was established in 1869, its website says. Early church buildings were in other locations.

The landmarked Marcy Avenue building’s cornerstone was laid in 1887. The first worship services took place in 1888.

A Park Whose Name Was Changed On our stroll up Marcy Avenue, we passed Tompkins Park — actually, that was its original name.

It was rechristened Herbert Von King Park in 1985 to honor a neighborhood activist, a Brownstoner.com story by Suzanne Spellen says.

Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed the eight-acre park in 1871, the story notes.

This famous duo designed Central Park and Prospect Park.

Rowhouses on the streets bordering Herbert Von King Park are especially beautiful. One standout among

them is 660 Lafayette Ave. on the corner of Marcy Avenue.

The Romanesque Revival house was built in the 1880s — and starting in 1901, it was the home of the Rev. Livingston L. Taylor, the pastor of the nearby Puritan Congregational Church, a posting by Matthew X. Kiernan says.

Kiernan, who owns New York Big Apple Images, has taken wonderful architectural photos throughout the five boroughs.

A block away from 660 Lafayette Ave., there’s a stand-alone house at 175

Kosciuszko St. that’s clad with an eye-pleasing combo of metal panels and wood planks.

According to Finance Department records, the house belongs to an LLC with Meshulam Hass as a member, which bought it for $726,000 in December 2016.

The house is now on the sale market. The listing agents are mTkalla Keaton, Reginald Richardson and Shani O’Neal at real estate brokerage Compass.

Brooklyn Historical Society Launches Unprecedented Oral History Project Chronicling Lives of ‘Muslims in Brooklyn’

The Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) will soon launch a multi-year flagship project, Muslims in Brooklyn.

This collection of oral histories is an unprecedented, first-of-its-kind resource that chronicles the extended saga of Muslim Brooklynites in a permanent, searchable, user-friendly digital archive.

Fifty oral histories will be made available to the public on an online listening portal which shares the long, varied history of the highest concentration of Muslims in any geographic area in the United States. The project will launch at a ceremony on Thurs., Dec. 6.

The “Muslims in Brooklyn” project includes a web-based educational curriculum, educational and public programming, an arts-focused exhibition and dedicated segments on Brooklyn Historical Society’s podcast, Flatbush + Main.

This launch of the oral history portal is the first component of the ambitious initiative in progress.

“The oral histories in this collection challenge what we think we know about Muslims in Brooklyn and America at large,” says Zaheer Ali, BHS’s oral historian and Muslims in

Brooklyn project director.

“In their own voices, each of the 50 narrators offer uniquely personal accounts of their lives rendered in rich textured detail that defy any flattened portrayals of Muslims, and indeed transcend religious identity,” Ali went on.

“Their fears, courage, disappointments, hopes, and most of all deep abiding love for and pride in their families, communities, neighborhoods, and city reveal life experiences that are shared universally.”

Conducted over the course of a year, the 50 oral histories that constitute the Muslims in Brooklyn collection capture the numerous ethnicities, nationalities, neighborhoods and occupations of Muslim Brooklynites.

Those interviewed represent a variety of backgrounds including African American, Yemeni, Egyptian, Palestinian, Moroccan, Lebanese, Pakistani, Kashmiri, Bangladeshi, Tatar, Haitian and Puerto Rican.

Narrators for Muslims in Brooklyn represent 18 neighborhoods in Brooklyn, reflect varying approaches to religious observance in different traditions of Islam, and also represent a spectrum of occupations including religious leaders,

medical professionals, community organizers, homemakers, business owners, laborers, musicians, students, educators, artists and activists.

“Those of us who worked to build the ‘Muslims in Brooklyn’ project have received untold hospitality, generosity and encouragement from the people who shared their oral histories with us,” says Liz Strong, Muslims in Brooklyn public history project coordinator. “They worked hard to represent their lives honestly, and they believe in the importance of sharing their experiences for others to hear, learn from, take comfort in, or be inspired by. It has been an honor to work with them, and we will not shy away from our responsibility to steward their life stories in that same spirit.”

BHS will mark the release of the Muslims in Brooklyn oral history archives with a public listening party on Thurs., Dec. 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at BHS, 128 Pierrepont St. The oral history collection will be made accessible via brooklynhistory.org/muslimsinbrooklyn on Thurs., Dec. 6.

Accompanying public programs, exhibitions, K- 12 curriculum and segments on Flatbush + Main will continue through 2019.

North Brooklyn Angels Coalition Celebrates its Volunteer Force

The North Brooklyn Angels hosted its first annual “Thanks For Giving” event to celebrate volunteers in the community.

Local volunteers have driven the wildly successful mission and growth of the North Brooklyn Angels to serve almost 1,000 hot meals a week to communities throughout North Brooklyn.

Teams of volunteers run and cook meals out of a dedicated commercial kitchen designed by celebrated restaurant owner Josh Cohen.

This event brings volunteers together to share their experiences with community members who are learning about how to get involved, all while learning about the North Brooklyn Angels’ mis-

sion and upcoming opportunities.

The Angel’s formal name, the North Brooklyn Coalition of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, is a coalition of nonprofits, neighborhood groups, community organizations, religious groups, churches, mosques, synagogues, tenant associations and businesses that support the idea of working collectively to combat hunger and food insecurity in North Brooklyn.

The Nov. 20 celebration was hosted at Shrine Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Hall.

Thousands Packed Dedication Mass Of Brooklyn’s New Maronite Church

“Thousands Attend Dedication of Maronite Church on the Heights” was the headline on the religion section of the Brooklyn Eagle from Nov. 27, 1944. This sanctuary was formerly the Church of the Pilgrims (featured on this page last week in a history piece about the 50th jubilee of the Rev. Dr. Richard Salter Storrs as pastor of that congregation.)

The Eagle story began, “A new page in the centuries-old church history of Brooklyn, in its familiar history as ‘the City of Churches,’ was opened yesterday when the former Congregational Church of the Pilgrims, at Remsen and Henry Sts., was dedicated as the new Our Lady of Lebanon R.C. Church of the Maronite Rite.”

At that point, the writer may not have clearly understood that the church is actually the Eastern Rite (rather than the Roman or Latin Rite) of St. Maron.

“Solemn and colorful ceremonies marked the dedication by the Most Rev. Raymond A. Kearney, S.T.D, the Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn.

Several thousand individuals attended and many hundreds, unable to gain places in the crowded pews, stood or knelt during the two and one-half hours of services at which Bishop Kearney presided.”

The Eagle article continued, “The transition of the history of the church, which makes it the religious home of hundreds of Brooklyn families whose ancestors came from what is now the Republic of Lebanon, lying between Syria and Palestine at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, was called ‘an epic poem of the Land of

“The superstar of folk music,” German bass Ronny Weiland comes to Brooklyn Heights on Mon., Nov. 26 for a Christmas concert at Zion German Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Zion Church’s Pastor Klaus Gress welcomes the entire neighborhood to the free 7 p.m. concert, which will feature themed songs of the season. (Voluntary donations are welcome.) Afterwards, attendees will enjoy Christmasstollen and Gluewein for refreshment.

Weiland grew up and was educated in Apolda, German Democratic Republic, where he showed early musical talent, and played the flute. He trained as a stone mason and sculptor, and performed in the army music corps.

Weiland experienced the start of his singing career while performing at a birthday party. He then studied voice at the Franz Liszt Academy Weimar. His first solo concerts followed in 2005. He recorded the first CD on “Bach Recording.”

Since 2006, he has appeared at festive events and also experienced first German national appearances together with other folk music artists.

ON NOV. 19, 1919,, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “London — Great Britain and France are considering whether they are not compelled to proceed with the carrying out of the German Peace Treaty and the operation of the League of Nations independently of the United States, pending the decision of the American Government on its course. It is pointed out that matters are continually arising under the treaty which need immediate attention, such as the operation of the various plebiscite commissions, and it is considered that because of this fact it is no longer possible to delay making the pact operative. The opinion strongly prevails here that Great Britain will not accept any reservations made by the United States Senate which would necessitate the negotiation of a new treaty, as the British Government, it is declared, has every present intention of abiding by the decisions of the Paris conference.  ON NOV. 19, 1925, the Eagle reported, “Cairo, Nov. 19 (AP) — The condition of the mummy of Tutankhamen has been found to be such that it will be impossible to remove it from its gold coffin, Drs. [Douglas] Derry and Saleh Hamdi announced today in a report on the unwrapping of the mummy, which has occupied seven days. The experts announce that the mummy is firmly glued to the bottom of its gold coffin with a dried pitchlike material. It will also be futile to attempt to make X-ray pictures on account of the numerous layers of gold, faience and other materials covering the body to the knees.  ON NOV. 19, 1938, the Eagle reported, “A special prayer for all victims of racial and religious persecution, stressing the plight of Jews in Germany, will be offered today and tomorrow by millions of Catholics, Protestants and Jews at religious services throughout America. The supplication, a plea for surcease from ‘cruelty and persecution, imprisonment and exile,’ has been written in connection with the Day of Prayer sponsored by the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America and the National Conference of Jews and Christians. Bishop Thomas E. Molloy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn has instructed the priests of the diocese to pray for the world’s afflicted, and the directors of the Brooklyn Church and Mission Federation have also endorsed the day of prayer.”

ON NOV. 20, 1947, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “(UP) — Princess Elizabeth today spoke a tremulous ‘I will’ in ancient Westminster Abbey and with those words the future Queen of Britain became the wife of the newly created Duke of Edinburgh ... Despite postwar austerity and slate-colored skies, it was the most brilliant occasion Britain had known since the days before the war ... A million persons lined the historic streets of London — the Mall, Whitehall, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square — for the spectacle ... The wedding ceremony was carried by radio to every part of the British Empire, as well as to the United States, while television and movie cameras recorded the occasion. Twenty-seven kings, queens, princes and princesses of the ruling houses of Europe, all the ambassadors accredited to the Court of St. James, statesmen and the great of many lands were present.”  ON NOV. 20, 1915, the Eagle reported, “A desecration of the American flag by workmen engaged in repainting the walls of the main corridor of Borough Hall was discovered and indignantly stopped by officials of the borough government yesterday afternoon. In order to protect oil paintings of former mayors of Brooklyn hanging on the walls, the painters covered them with large American flags. The drops of paint fell, not upon the pictures, but upon the Stars and Stripes. Thomas King, watchman in the building and a veteran of the Civil War, was the first to notice the insult. He rushed into the Borough President’s office and also notified the Board of Aldermen in their room nearby.”

ON NOV. 21, 1944, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Paris, Nov. 21 (U.P.) — Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower said today the only sensible course open to the German Army is to fight to the bitter end west of the Rhine. Eisenhower suggested inferentially that he expected the final battle of the European war to be fought west of the Rhine, where six Allied armies were waging the Allied grand offensive and hammering the Nazis back along a 400-mile front. But the battle will not be easy, the supreme commander warned at a press conference.

To win the victory and peace, he said, “We’ve got to fight like hell for it. Now let’s do it.”  ON NOV. 21, 1921, the Eagle reported, “Rome, Nov. 21 (AP) — Pope Benedict XV today appointed the Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Molloy, D.D., Bishop of Brooklyn, succeeding the late Bishop McDonnell. The Pontiff made the appointment at a secret consistory in the presence of all the cardinals living in Rome ... Although Bishop Molloy’s rise in the church has been exceptional, his qualifications for the high position to which he has been appointed have been widely known and recognized by those familiar with his student and priestly life. In fact, it is said of him that his eligibility for promotion was recognized in Rome sooner than it was discovered here, because of his high standing as a student at the American College, where he studied for the priesthood and where he captured the highest honors in theology and philosophy. His personality, together with his scholarship, stamped him as one of the most remarkable students at the seminary and won for him honors that created a lasting impression among his teachers and the seminarians of all nationalities preparing for the priesthood at Rome.”

Bay Ridge Civic Groups Join Forces to Help Deliver Turkeys to Fort Hamilton Army Base

n Mon., Nov. 19, the Rotary Club of Verrazano and the Salaam Club of New York joined forces to help distribute 100 turkeys to the families of soldiers at the Fort Hamilton Army Base.

Rotary Club member Ralph Succar, along with Rotary Club President Enrico Ferrara and club members Vincent Nativo, Michael Icobucci and Joseph Speziale handed out the turkeys with Salaam Club President Joseph Avignone and club member and community leader John Abi-Habib.

Succar explained the Rotary Club’s motto is “Service Above Self.”

“That means it’s all about the service that we provide for others,” he said.

“It’s not about us.”

Ferrara called the turkey distribution, “Just a little token of our appreciation for all that the service members do in keeping us safe.”

Nativo echoed Ferrara’s sentiments. “We come out and give turkeys to soldiers because this our way to say thank you for their service and for protecting us,” Nativo said. “Fort Hamilton is the perfect place to be

in Brooklyn and the Rotary is a Brooklyn-based club and we like to donate and give back the way they’ve been giving to us for many, many years.”

“We’ve been enjoying this partnership with the Fort Hamilton Army Base for as long as I can remember,” Abi-Habib said. “On behalf of our president and the entire board of the Salaam Club, we are so proud of you and we are behind you 100 percent.”

Base Chaplain Maj. Bruce Duty said he was thankful for the Rotary and Salaam Clubs. “They invest their lives in Fort Hamilton families and we appreciate their support.”

Fort Hamilton Commanding Officer Col. Andrew Zieseniss said he was impressed by the strong sense of community he’s discovered in Bay Ridge.

“We live in a community that’s incredibly supportive,” Zieseniss told this paper. “Sometimes you lose sight of that when you’re

on a military installation where you have walls and fences and gates, and there’s almost a degree of separation between the community and the installation where you live.

But it’s things like this that help draw us much closer together. This is by far one of the most supportive communities that I’ve ever lived in.”

The Rotary Club of Verrazano is one of more than 30,000 Rotary Clubs in 160 countries worldwide.

It works to help feed the

hungry, procure open-heart surgeries for children overseas and support a variety of local projects.

The Salaam Club was founded 71 years ago by Lebanese and Syrian immigrants in Bay Ridge as a fraternity of men of Middle Eastern descent. In 1994, the Salaam Club Community Fund was established to benefit local organizations such as St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the St. Nicholas Home and the Guild for Exceptional Children in Bay Ridge.

Reaching-Out Community Services Distributes Turkeys for Thanksgiving

usiness and civic leaders from Benson hu rst, Bat h Beach and Bay Ridge joined together to help ensure that Thanksgiving would be a special holiday for neighbors in need who otherwise would go without.

Over 600 turkeys, plus hams, sweet potatoes and all the trimmings were donated to Reaching-Out Communit y Ser v ices Inc., a nonprofit Bensonhurst-based charity that has fed thousands of hungry families in Southwest Brooklyn, according to Thomas Neve, the founder and executive director of the organization.

The group, which operates a food pantry out of a storefront at 7708 New Utrecht Ave., distributes hundreds of free turkeys

at its Operation Gobbler Giving event each year. The distribution traditionally takes place on the Monday before Thanksgiving, and City Harvest provides all the trimmings to go along with the turkey.

On Mon., Nov. 19, the line in front of Reaching-Out stretched around a city block as hundreds waited to pick up their free holiday meals from a sidewalk full of vendors.

And as a special treat, Tom the Turkey was there to help greet those waiting in line.

Neve explained that this was his organization’s 13th annual Operation Gobbler Giving. “A lot of people say, ‘thanks for what you do,’ but it’s really not all about us but about our sponsors like the Rotary Club of Verrazano, the Food Bank for New

York City, City Harvest; these are the people that make it happen,” Neve said.

“The Food Bank of New York City donated over 200 turkeys and the Rotary Club of Verrazano donated 235 turkeys,” he added. “We have over 600 in total. This day is because of all the wonderful sponsors that made it happen.”

City Councilmember Justin Brannan walked up and down the line greeting people. “This is what Tom does every single day with Reaching-Out Community Services,” Brannan said. “This is just the culmination of all the work Reaching-Out does all year round. Just look at the people lining up because it’s all about just giving back.

As long we’re okay and our families are okay, we have to give back. It’s your obligation as a human being to give back to those who are less fortunate.”

First Snowstorm of the Season Pummels City, Trees Down Across the Borough

ike the rest of the city, and most of the tri-state area, southern Brooklyn saw its fair share of backup Thursday evening, Nov. 15 thanks to the first snowfall of the season.

Amidst the storm, which started at around 1 p.m. and only strengthened throughout the day, traffic snarled along the Belt Parkway and the Ver ra z a n o -Na r r o w s Bridge, resulting in an overspill onto Ridge streets, and lines for local buses such as the S79 and S53 that wrapped around street corners.

Friday morning, fallen tree limbs still littered many of Bay Ridge’s streets, some even blocking off portions of its major thoroughfares.

However, this wasn’t an isolated issue. Neighborhoods across Brooklyn are still dealing with scattered tree parts as they head into the

weekend.

Elected officials from both sides of the aisle are wondering what happened. “[It’s] safe to say somebody dropped the ball,” Councilmember Justin Brannan, who represents Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and parts of Bath Beach and Ben-

sonhurst, wrote on social media Thursday night. “No way a few inches of slush should bring the greatest city in the world to its knees.

“I’ve got trees down. I’ve got people telling me it took them [four] hours to get home. And not a snow plow in sight,” he went on, adding that the lack of response wasn’t limited to his own district. “I’m seeing reports

from all over the city about the slow response to today’s slush storm.”

Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis pointed fingers at Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“The city’s response today was an utter failure,” she said in a statement. “It is clear our mayor and his commissioners were not prepared for today’s snowfall. Although there are only a few inches that

accumulated, motorists and commuters were left desperate to find a safe route home with most, after multiple hours, still navigating snow-filled streets. There were clearly not enough salt spreaders or plows, leaving roads slippery and causing numerous accidents. Additionally, there should have been traffic agents placed at the busiest intersections to prevent gridlock.”

Malliotakis also placed blame on the MTA. “Traffic and the rush hour commute are already a nightmare in New York City, so it should have come as no surprise that inclement weather would exacerbate the problem,” she said, stressing that the agency was wildly unprepared for the gridlock. “When this is over, the city must conduct a review and develop a better

contingency plan because what happened today is simply unacceptable and it is only the second week in November.”

One local resident tweeted Thursday evening that it took her son five and a half hours to get home to Bay Ridge via the S93 bus from the College of Staten Island.

Others recounted excruciating waits for Manhattan express buses back to the borough. The R train, however, one local tweeted, was “surprisingly, not awful.”

The city’s response to the wicked weather, however delayed, spanned into Friday. After-school programs were cancelled in the morning, as well as field trips using yellow school buses and all PSAL games.

Due to high winds, the New York City Parks Department even urged New Yorkers to avoid city parks Friday.

By the end of the day Thursday, Brooklyn had seen as much as five inches of snow, much of it washed away by rain by Friday morning.

passion ever since,” she went on, stressing, “I just want to be a positive role model for Native American youth.”

She said that she will be appearing in a new Netflix series, “Friends from College,” and a new documentary she produced and stars in called “Magic Madeleines” is premiering at L.A. Skins Fest, a Native American Arts festival.

Apache tribe member Sparrowhawk talked about his many talents including acting, modeling and painting. He is currently appearing in a Crunch candy bar TV commercial.

Sparrowhawk displayed an intricate portrait of a warrior he created in two days, inspired by a recent trip to Badlands National Park in South Dakota.

The event featured performances by Sheldon Raymore, who performed the colorful Grass Dance, and Tony Enos, who sang his heartfelt new ballad “I Cry.” Fort Hamilton commanding officer Col. Andrew Zieseniss said that he learned a lot at the ceremony. “I think all of these touchpoints are important to our history especially during American Indian Heritage Month,” he noted.

Brooklyn Army Terminal to Open First Co-Op Owned Solar Garden in New York

unset Park is taking it from the top, in terms of solar power.

On Thurs., Nov. 8, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced that UPROSE, an environmental advocacy group based in the Sunset Park, in conjunction with Solar One, 770 Electric Corp. and Co-op Power, has been chosen to develop and operate a community solar garden at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT).

According to BAT, the rooftop solar array will be the first cooperatively-owned project of its kind in New York State, and will connect hundreds of New Yorkers and industrial businesses to sustainable energy through an affordable subscription-based service.

NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett said

he was delighted with the collaboration.

“The Brooklyn Army Terminal is one of the most innovative and accessible industrial campuses in the world,” he said. “We’re using its vast rooftop space to create new capacity for solar power in New York City and deliver a sustainable energy alternative to the surrounding community.

Elizabeth Yeampierre, executive director of UPROSE, agreed.

“We are excited about the incredible opportunities provided to us by the development of community solar at Brooklyn Army Terminal,” she said.

“UPROSE has long held that the crisis of climate change must be addressed by expanding democratic control over resources and elevating community into positions of leadership and decision-making.

“This is particularly true in environmental justice communities like Sunset Park,” she continued. “We

commend the EDC for recognizing this opportunity, and we look forward to developing an innovative solar project that brings clean renewable energy to Sunset Park community members, utilizes public assets for maximum public benefit, and takes us one step closer towards climate justice and a just transition for a frontline neighborhood.”

According to EDC, the 80,000-square-foot community solar garden atop BAT’s Building B is slated to be running in late 2019.

Subscribers will join the New York City Community Energy Cooperative and make monthly payments in exchange for solar energy credits that reduce their energy bills.

CUOMO ANNOUNCES DOULA MEDICAID PILOT WILL LAUNCH IN BK NEXT YEAR Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced that the New York State Department of Health (DOH) will launch a pilot expansion of the state’s Medicaid program to cover doula services in parts of Brooklyn.

This month, NYSDOH will begin the necessary training, outreach and education efforts to ensure the successful launch of the pilot, which also includes portions of Erie County, and which is scheduled to launch on March 1, 2019.

“Every New Yorker deserves a healthy childbirth experience regardless of ethnicity, birthplace or economic status and expanding access to doula services is crucial to reducing racial disparities in maternal mortality rates,” Cuomo said. “New York will continue to take action to provide women with the

resources and child care they need and this pilot program is a significant step toward ensuring a safer, healthier and more just New York for all.”

NYSDOH will begin Medicaid enrollment and in-person Medicaid billing training and assistance to doulas in both counties starting in November and continuing through January, 2019.

A doula is a non-medical birth coach who assists a woman before, during or after childbirth if needed. The use of doulas has been shown to increase positive health outcomes, including reducing birth complications for the mother and the baby. Erie County and Brooklyn have the state’s highest number of Medicaid births and maternal and infant mortality rates. – JA

MAYOR’S OFFICE HAS ANNOUNCED PARTNERSHIP TO OFFER WOMEN TECHNICAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, MotherCoders founder and CEO Tina Lee, and Google have announced a partnership to bring the MotherCoders tech training program to New York City, as part of the City’s women.nyc initiative.

Hosted in partnership with New York Public Libraries, Brooklyn Public Libraries and Queens Public Libraries, MotherCoders will offer a nine-week tech training program tailored to women with college degrees and work experience – with free on-site child care.

Applications will open on Nov. 15, with the first group of participants beginning in February 2019. This is the first time MotherCoders training will take place outside the Bay Area.

“The diversity of our talent is what sets New York City’s tech sector apart, and makes it one of our fastest-growing industries,” said Glen. “We need to do all we can to connect talented people

with tech opportunities - including mothers, who have historically been underrepresented in the field. MotherCoders innovative combination of training and child care takes that issue head on, helping us to build a tech ecosystem that is truly representative of New York City.”

Designed for mothers who are re-entering the workforce, entrepreneurs or women who are already working, MotherCoders gives students HTML, CSS and Javascript skills, while preparing them for tech careers by offering them hands-on industry knowledge with company visits, in-depth explorations of marketplace trends and issues, and a built-in support network.

FELDER PUSHES ELECTION REFORMS In the wake of numerous problems with scanners at polling places on Election Day, state Sen. Simcha Felder (D-Borough Park-Midwood-parts of Flatbush) said he will introduce legislation aimed at addressing the issues.

Felder’s bill, called the “Restore Faith in Voting Act,” would require the New York City Board of Elections to use Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) machines in all polling places.

The machines are designed to allow touch-screen voting. Under the system, voters would also get the chance to review a paper record of their vote before casting it. The paper records would be used if necessary for election audits and recounts.

New York State would pay for the new machines under Felder’s bill.

“Since the current machines are

expiring shortly, now is the time to update to machines that work,” Felder said in a statement. “Modern technology has made touch screen devices so common that most New Yorkers use them several times a day. Whether it is a touch screen phone, an ATM or a self-checkout machine at the local store, touch screen machines are everywhere. It’s time that our voting machines catch up.”

Felder said his bill is sorely needed, given the delays and mix-ups that took place on Election Day this year. Many polling places reported having broken scanners, a situation that led to voters having to wait on long lines to cast their ballots.

“This legislation ensures that New Yorkers who show up to the polls are not met with broken machines and long lines,” he stated. – PK

ASSEMBLYMEMBER WILLIAM COLTON HOSTS VETERANS MEETING Assemblymember William Colton (D-Gravesend-Bensonhurst-Bath Beach-Dyker Heights) and 47th Assembly District Leader Nancy Tong recently sponsored a meeting on Weds., Nov. 14 to honor veterans and service members.

“The meeting was an enormous success,” Colton said.

“Over 50 people were present including the Color Guard from the American Legion Lt. B.R. Kimlau Chinese Memorial Post 1291, veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam War, World War II and other veterans who have served our country. Councilman Chaim Deutsch and Asher Zlotnik, a representative from Congressman-Elect Max Rose, came to express their respect and honor the veterans. Legal experts will be on hand to assist constituents with any legal issues they might have, Eugene said. The program is limited to civil matters only, not criminal cases.

CARROLL, LANDER DEMAND ELEVATOR AT SEVENTH AVENUE STATION One of the busiest subway stations in Brooklyn, the Seventh Avenue stop on the F/G lines in Park Slope is badly in need of an elevator, according to two lawmakers, who are stepping up the pressure on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to install one.

Assemblymember Robert Carroll and Councilmember Brad Lander, both of whom are Democrats representing Park Slope, recently held a rally outside the station with transportation advocacy groups that included Heights and Hills, TransitCenter, Center for Independence

of the Disabled New York, Good Neighbors of Park Slope and Rise and Resist.

“It is long overdue for the MTA New York City Transit to provide accessibility at this station and at many more stations throughout the city,” Carroll wrote in a letter to constituents.

Carroll said he is also demanding that the MTA provide a full budget to the state legislature for its Fast Forward plan to fix the subways so that lawmakers have a full understanding of how much the plan will cost “before the budget debate begins.” – PK

It’s Time to Pay for our Mass Transit Repairs

n Sunset Park, I can admire the skyscrapers of lower Manhattan and midtown from the top of our beautiful park. But just try taking the subway to work to Manhattan from my Brooklyn district. Some days, it feels like it’s an ocean away.

Transit service is bad.

Now that the MTA has a plan to modernize the subway, it’s time for the governor and my legislative colleagues to enact congestion pricing to begin paying for it.

When the Riders Alliance studied signal problems during the morning rush hour last August, the D and R trains, which run right through Sunset Park, came up dead last.

Over 23 weekday mornings, each line was delayed by signal problems 11 times and mechanical problems five times. It’s no wonder.

Our signals rely on 1930s technology. Many of our subway cars come from 1960s and 1970s. It’s long past time to modernize them. We need to step up and fund the work.

Sunset Park and Red Hook, in my Assembly district, are diverse immigrant communities. Our neighborhoods include thriving commercial and industrial sections as well as dense residential sections.

The city’s Independent Budget Office puts the cost at 35,000 hours lost every rush hour morning.

Last spring, to fix the subways. the MTA proposed its Fast Forward plan that will cost tens of billions of dollars. To pay for it, the state should enact congestion pricing, which will raise up to $1.7 billion for transit improvements per year.

While congestion pricing would mostly impact higher income individuals, subway improvements would positively affect the large

majority of New Yorkers who commute daily, especially low wage workers who rely on public transit to get to their jobs.

Furthermore, with congestion pricing, drivers are more likely to carpool or take public transit, easing congestion and making it easier on bus commutes.

This will also help immigrants, who make up 55 percent of bus riders.

It’s fair to say that congestion pricing is an economic and immigration justice issue. Progressive legislators should push for congestion pricing in order to fix our decrepit subway system as a way to support low wage workers and immigrants.

Later in the first quarter, Tottenville answered with a two-yard Michael Jones sweep along with a missed extra point to allow the Railsplitters a 7-6 lead.

After a 36-yard gain to the Tottenville five-yard line by Lloyd Williams,

Abanikanda scored his second touchdown of the game from the three-yard line.

NYU Langone, Pols Celebrate New School Health Fund Signed into Law in Sunset Park

epresentatives of NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn gathered with Assemblymember Felix Ortiz and state Sen. Velmanette Montgomery at Sunset Park High School, 153 35th Street on Thurs., Nov. 1 to celebrate new school health fund signed into law this month.

The newly formed state School-Based Health Center Fund will give much needed support to the more than 255 centers across the state.

Executive director of the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone Larry McReynolds expressed special thanks to the architects of the new fund, which New York State residents can contribute to when they file their tax returns, with some $2 million in new revenue for the school-based health centers anticipated.

Thanks to the new law, “If they are due a refund, they can dedicate part of that refund to school based health clinics,” McReynolds explained.

In particular, he added, “School-based health centers improve access to health care for vulnerable kids whether they’re feeling bullied or have low self-esteem or are depressed or have pregnancy issues or are at risk for HIV. We are in a destigmatized, easily accessible environment that anyone can access regardless of their ability to pay. That’s why we have great outcomes with kids.

“I feel as though we are very lucky to have a schoolbased health center not just for students who may not have access to those resources outside of school, but every student can take advantage of it for something as simple as getting a physical so they can participate in sports,” she added.

They can do it right here so it’s convenient and it allows high school students to take on adult roles. The idea of, ‘I

need to do this. I can make the appointment myself and

make it when I don’t have a test,’ it’s like a rehearsal for

adulthood.”

“I’m very impressed with the clinic and the holistic approach they have regarding nurse practitioner, social worker, guidance counsellor and NYU Langone working together to make sure they give the best services they can,” Ortiz said. “The importance of today is to continue to push to ensure that every child in the state of New York will be able to have a physical exam in their school. It’s to ensure every child has the opportunity to be physically fit for their education. If any child feels sick, they won’t have to go to a hospital. They can do it in a school setting and they won’t be missing classes.”

“This is a very small step in terms of creating a little bit of a revenue stream for school-based health clinics in our state. Every citizen now can participate in helping to fund these programs,” added Montgomery. “It’s a big step.”
