Brooklyn can often feel like one giant construction zone, thanks to its boom times. But here and there, when the scaffolding is peeled away, the result of all the noise and dust is revealed to be pleasing to the eyes — even a delight, in the best cases. Those buildings, expressive in design and uplifting for their neighborhoods, deserve recognition.

That’s the role of the 18th annual Building Brooklyn Awards, which took place Aug. 1 at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. The winners comprise 11

Brooklyn has a new cultural curator, events impresario and booster. BRIC, the Downtown arts organization, recently announced that Kristina Newman-Scott, currently the director of culture for the state of Connecticut, will be the Brooklyn nonprofit group’s new president.

Newman-Scott will be taking over for Leslie Griesbach Schultz, who stepped down as president in June after serving for 13 years, during which she greatly expanded its programming and moved the organization into BRIC House, its 40,000-square-foot home.

BRIC’s new president speaks of her future home with the zeal of a convert. “Brooklyn is literally the most dy-

namic city in the world,” Newman-Scott told The Bridge. “I’ve never lived there, so I’m definitely still learning, but anytime I went to visit friends, this fantastic mixture of authenticity and focus on culture has stood out. And that’s pretty amazing.”

Newman-Scott will have a sturdy stage to build upon. BRIC offers major music festivals including the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival (in the summer) and BRIC JazzFest (fall) as well as the Emmy-winning BRIC TV network, art exhibitions and educational programs.

When the BRIC executive-search team reached out to Newman-Scott, she was skeptical at first, she told her hometown newspaper. But after finding out more about the organization, she realized it was a great fit. “In this one or-

Photo by Chion Wolf ganization, every single area that they’re touching, producing, presenting,” she told The Bridge, “is in alignment with all the work that I’ve done in my career.”

Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Newman-Scott was a painter during her time as a BFA student at Kingston’s Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Upon graduating, she moved to New England and went into arts management, serving as director of programs at the Boston Center for the Arts and as director of marketing, events and cultural affairs for the city of Hartford, among other roles.

What her recent posts have had in common, she said, is working “at the intersection of art, community development and government.” Newman-Scott believes that her new role will be liberating. “There’s not much agility in government,” she said. In order to be innovative, “you have to be open to taking risk and in government, risk is not a thing that anybody is comfortable with.”

Among her initial goals at BRIC is raising the organization’s profile and

expanding its reach. “I am committed to ensuring that in the future, there will not be one person in Brooklyn who won’t know what BRIC is,” she told The New York Times. “Everyone — whether it’s the guy that developed the building down the block or the woman who has the bodega — should feel like BRIC is the place that they get to see authentic Brooklyn through arts and culture.”

Newman-Scott will be breaking ground as “one of the very few women of color to lead a major New York cultural institution,” the Times noted. She’ll lead a staff of more than 175 people, 58 percent nonwhite, a notably high proportion for such an organization.

BRIC has operating revenues of nearly $16 million.

Newman-Scott and her husband, co-owner of Scott’s Jamaican Bakery in Hartford, plan to move to Brooklyn soon with their two daughters. “So watch out.

Coney Island CONEY ISLAND NATIVE History Day IS STEEPED IN to Celebrate NEIGHBORHOOD’S Immigrants

The contributions that immigrants have made to Coney Island will be the centerpiece of a special celebration of the neighborhood’s history on Aug. 11.

The Eighth Annual Coney Island History Day will take place at two spots: Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, located between Bowery Street and the boardwalk, and the Coney Island History Project at 3059 West 12th St. The festivities will run from 2 to 6 p.m.

The event will feature performances by Russian ballet dancers, a Haitian drummer, a Mexican mariachi band, a Chinese folk dance troupe and Italian opera singers. The performances will take place at the Dreamland Plaza Stage at 3 p.m. following an opening ceremony at 2 p.m.

The festivities will be hosted by Deno John Vourderis, of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, and Charles Denson, co-founder and executive director of the Coney Island History Project, a non-profit group that works to preserve the community’s history.

In addition to enjoying the music and dance performances, visitors will have the chance to share their fondest memories of Coney Island by talking about their experiences in the History Project’s Oral Archive History booth.

Coney Island has always serve as a melting pot in New York, according to Denson, who said Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park is a perfect illustration of the gifts and talents that immigrants have brought to the area over the past 120 years.

“The Wonder Wheel was saved by a Greek immigrant,” he told the Brooklyn Eagle.

The Wonder Wheel was built in 1920.

Deno D. Vourderis, who was born the same year as the ride was built, came to the U.S. from Greece at the age of 14. “He was one of 22 children,” Denson said. Vourderis purchased the Wonder Wheel in 1983 as a present for his wife.

Vourderis decided to revitalize the old ride and then built a park around it containing other rides for children and families to enjoy.

In 1989, the Wonder Wheel was designated as New York City landmark. The street outside the park was named in Vourderis’ honor in 2001.

One of the saddest days of Charles Denson’s life took place when he was a boy growing up in Coney Island and he watched through a fence as bulldozers tore down the last of the rides in Steeplechase Park. It was 1966 and the once-iconic amusement park was being demolished.

“It was a transitional time. Steeplechase Park was closing down. It was one of the saddest times

of my life, watching them tear the park apart,” Denson told this newspaper in a phone interview on July 30.

By the 1960s, Coney Island had become bleak.

Crime increased and residents walked down the street looking over their shoulders.

The only remnant left from Steeplechase Park is the Parachute Jump.

“I never gave up on Coney Island. I always thought it could recover,” Denson said.

Not only did Coney Is-

land recover, these days, it is thriving. The beach, boardwalk and Luna Park have become tourist Meccas. Earlier this year, the Coney Island Boardwalk was declared a scenic landmark by New York City. MCU Park, where the Brooklyn Cyclones play, draws crowds of baseball fans and the neighborhood boasts numerous restaurants. The Ford Amphitheater is a glorious addition to the ambience.

Denson, 65, has watched the renaissance

with pride.

Denson, a photographer and documentary filmmaker, is co-founder of the Coney Island History Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the neighborhood’s history.

He has also written three books. “Coney Island Lost and Found,” was published in 2002.

New York–based Chilean artist and poet Cecilia Vicuña has devoted a significant part of her artistic practice to studying, interpreting, and reactivating the quipus, which were banned by the Spanish during their colonization of South America. Drawing on her indigenous heritage, Vicuña channels this

Drawing on satirical cartoons, comic strips and comic books from the 19th through the 21st centuries, Underground Heroes: New York Transit in Comics is a raucous ride through New York’s transit system from a range of visual storytellers. The exhibit includes such luminaries as Winsor McCay, Will Eisner, Bill Griffith, Roz Chast, Ronald Wimberly and Julia Wertz whose work demonstrates the influence that mass transit has on the stories that are irrevocably woven into the cultural fabric of New York City.

There's one tiny Bay Ridge street everybody in the neighborhood knows how to find — because it's where Tom Selleck's “Blue Bloods” house is located.

The street is Harbor View Terrace, which is sandwiched between Shore Road and Narrows Avenue and runs from 82nd Street to 80th Street.

The house's exterior appears in every episode of CBS TV's long-running series. It's the fictional home of New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, the character played by Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winner Selleck.

In every episode of the show, Reagan's family goes to his house for Sunday dinner. An exterior shot of 8070 Harbor View Terrace introduces the scene.

The Colonial-style brick house is situated on the corner of 82nd Street. It was built in the 1920s.

In real life, the Harbor View Terrace property belongs to the Diocese of St. Maron-USA, city Finance Department records indicate. A Maronite bishop lives in it.

To give you an idea of what houses on this short but stunning street are worth these days, another brick Colonial-style house, 8053 Harbor View Terrace, sold for $3 million in June 2017, Finance Department records indicate.

The huge lot next door at 8047 Harbor View Terrace sold in February 2017 for $2.5 million, Finance Department records show. Its new owners have drawn up plans to construct a 3,584-square-foot single-family home, city Buildings Department filings indicate.

Many of the properties on Harbor View Terrace are stand-alone Tudor-style houses with lovely landscaping.

According to Finance Department records, the Tudor house at 8029 Harbor View Terrace sold for $2.8 million in May. Two tiny private cul-de-sacs that are parallel to each other have entrances on Harbor View Terrace.

One is Colonial Court. The other is Harbor Lane.

The backs of some Shore Road houses are at the ends of these cul-de-sacs.

Come See Charming Cul-De-Sacs off 72nd Street

Did you know there's a street in Bay Ridge that's paved with red bricks?

That's a rarity in this day and age.

It's Bennett Court, a cul-de-sac that is tucked between Third and Fourth avenues and has its entrance on 72nd Street.

It is lined with a handful of charming, old-fashioned rowhouses.

• Parallel to Bennett Court, and very close by between Third and Fourth avenues, you find Ridge Court. It, too, is a cul-de-sac with charming rowhouses.

To give you an indication of what properties go for on these two tiny streets, 7107 Ridge Court sold for $860,000 in June, city Finance Department records indicate.

• A third Bay Ridge cul-de-sac with an entrance on 72nd Street is called 72nd Court. It can be found on the

block between Shore Road and Narrows Avenue.

It is a serene corner of the neighborhood. Several rowhouses on 72nd Court's odd-numbered side have porches with beautiful awnungs.

Tudor City!

That's what Louise Terrace, one of our favorite short streets in Bay Ridge, looks like.

The houses on either side of the tidy terrace are lined up in perfect, Tudor-accented rows.

It's one of three tiny streets with entrances on 70th Street.

Though each street is just a block long, these aren't dead ends. They aren't private streets with restricted parking, like so many of the neighborhood's picturesque short streets.

Louise Terrace runs from 70th Street to Mackay Place on the block between Narrows Avenue and Colonial Road.

To give you an idea of what its homes are worth, city Finance Department records show that 7005 Louise Terrace sold for $980,000 in June. The seller had paid $175,000 for it in an estate sale in 1992, Finance Department records indicate.

The house next door, 7003 Louise Terrace, sold for

$1.055 million last year, Finance Department records show.

By the way, Mackay Place, a two-block-long street between Shore Road and Colonial Road, is also very picturesque.

Flags fly outside several Mackay Place homes near the entrance to Louise Terrace, a sight which pleases our patriotic soul. (Yes, a person can be both a member of the media and a patriot. The two things are not mutually exclusive.)

An old-fashioned, stand-alone house at 66 Mackay Place has a lawn and terrific trees.

The other two short streets we want to show you are between Colonial Road and Ridge Boulevard.

Each one runs from 70th Street to 71st Street. The two are parallel to each other. Here they are: • Ridgecrest Terrace actually does rise a bit higher in its middle and descend at its two ends, as its name suggests.

It is lined with classic 20th-century rowhouses that you see in many Southwest Brooklyn neighborhoods.

To give you an idea of what they're worth, 7013 Ridgecrest Terrace sold for $950,000 in an estate sale in July 2016, Finance Department records indicate.

B’klyn DA: Low-Level Marijuana Prosecutions Down 91 Percent

The mayor and the police commissioner announced in June that the city will have a new policy when it comes to marijuana arrests, but Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez has attempted to lead the way on the issue.

His office announced on Friday that low-level marijuana prosecutions have dropped by more than 91 percent between January and June of this year.

Gonzalez said that due to the success of the new policy the Brooklyn DA’s Office will continue to decline to prosecute most marijuana cases.

“Aggressive enforcement and prosecution of personal possession and use of marijuana does not keep us safer, and the glaring racial disparities in who is and is not arrested have contributed to a sense among many in our communities that the system is unfair,” Gonzalez said. “This in turn contributes to a lack of trust in law enforcement, which makes us all less safe.

“That is why, earlier this year, we expanded our existing non-prosecution policy to include smoking cases,” he continued. “That pilot policy proved to be effective in dramatically reducing the number of low-level marijuana cases processed in court, freeing resources and strengthening trust in the justice system. I intend to maintain this approach and to only prosecute the most egregious offenses, which will help ensure fairness and equal justice.”

This change in policy is a response to studies that show that people of color are much more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession despite the fact that white people are more likely to partake.

One study conducted by the Police Reform Organizing Project found that people of color were 90 percent more likely to be busted for possession in New York City from January to June of this year.

NYPD executives have insisted that they are merely responding to calls of complaints about marijuana as the reason certain neighborhoods are policed more heavily than others. However, a report published by Politico in March found no such correlation in the data.

For instance, the predominantly Hispanic neighborhood of East Harlem received 304 marijuana complaints and had 683 arrests. Meanwhile, the predominantly white neighborhood of the Upper East Side had 123 complaints and only 63 arrests, according to Politico.com.

To combat this racial disparity in Brooklyn, Gonzalez’s office has gradually expanded its policy of not prosecuting low-level cases to include people smoking in public.

The Brooklyn DA’s Office still prosecutes marijuana cases that it considers a threat to public safety, such as driving while smoking or when people are “creating a genuine nuisance,” such as smoking on the subway or in a school yard where kids may be exposed. It will also prosecute cases involving violent criminal activity.

Taken together, the number of cases that were accepted for prosecution this year declined from 349 in January to 29 in June — a drop of 91.6 percent. Of the cases that were prosecuted between January and June 2018, 84 percent resulted in a dismissal (by either an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal or by other means), according to the Brooklyn DA's Office.

The DA’s Office pointed out on Friday that it began to implement its policy before the city and the NYPD announced that it would make changes. It predicted that once NYPD implements its new protocols, the number of cases prosecuted will drop further.

The DA acknowledged that past marijuana cases, which would no longer be prosecuted under his new guidelines, could still have consequences today.

He explained that his Justice 2020 Initiative is working on a new program for vacating and sealing some past marijuana convictions.

Third-Grader from Gravesend Wins Prayer-Based Art Contest A student at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy in Brooklyn’s Gravesend neighborhood was named a first-place winner in the 2018 “Try Prayer! It Works” Contest.

Family Rosary sponsors this national competition that encourages students to express their faith through art, poetry and prose. Each year, children and teens from Catholic schools, parishes and other Catholic organizations across the globe utilize their creative skills to illustrate a different faith-based theme.

Acclaimed German Youth Choir Will Sing At Zion Church In Heights Zion German Evangelical Lutheran Church will host 40 young people from Germany, as their ensemble gives a concert here on Wednesday, Aug. 8.

The award-winning youth choir, Vivida Banda (“Rasselbunde” in German, or “A Gang of Rascals”) has begun its U.S. tour this summer. The first performance of the tour by the choir, which hails from St. Peter’s Church in Weinheim, Germany, was at the University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The ensemble presented a varied program of contemporary and classical songs in German and English.

Vivida Banda is considered the most advanced choir of the St. Peter’s Church Singschule (song school).

Children begin singing with the Singschule from the age of one and continue through age 21 in a graded choral program. They learn music of all epochs and genres. The only requirement is that the music is of high quality. Vivida Banda regularly sings in services and concerts in and around Weinheim, which is near Mannheim, near the Rhine and Neckar rivers.

Director Anne Langenbach founded Vivida Banda in 2009, and won the prestigious ECHO Klassik award for promoting young people in 2013. In recent years, Vivida Banda has sung at Rosengarten, Congress Center Mannheim and on ZDF television. This biennial tour is the ensemble’s first one to the United States.

Churches Eulogize Politician William Jennings Bryan

The Brooklyn Eagle of August 3, 1925 reported that noted and controversial politician and moralist William Jennings Bryan was eulogized in several churches around the borough.

“William Jennings Bryan dead has awakened in America a determination that assaults on religion must cease,” declared Canon William Sheafe Chase in his sermon at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church on Bedford Avenue.

Another Episcopal cleric at Church of the Redeemer, the Rev. Thomas J. Lacey, said that Bryan “was noble of heart and of even temperament, unruffled in defeat and singularly free from personal animosities.”

Noting this although Bryan’s personal magnetism didn’t always him win his causes, but that his gifts were in social betterment rather than in political prominence. Dr. Lacey also noted that “the attitude of the Episcopal Church is ‘decidedly liberal’ to the theory of evolution. It is only those men hostile to faith that have selected evolution as a sort of veiled weapon to undermine and destroy the foundations of religion.”

Church of the Redeemer no longer exists, having been deconsecrated in 2012 and the property sold to a real estate developer.

LAUTATO, Rosalie - On July 15, 2018, surrounded by family. She was 89 years old. Rosalie was born on July 7, 1929 in Brooklyn, where she lived until her death.

She was the oldest of eight children. In 1951, she married Clement "Sonny" Lautato, a New York City police officer.

The two lived in Sheepshead Bay with their children, Joseph and GraceAnn. She worked at Kingsborough Community College before retiring and entering the restaurant business.

She and her family owned and operated the first Sbarro pizzeria franchise before opening their own Italian restaurant in Atlantic City, New Jersey, called Cafe 2825. Rosalie loved to cook and enjoyed watching classic films.

Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Committee Off to a Good Start

Young lawyers committees are a great tool for bar associations to attract new and younger members and to help those new members grow their networks and become better attorneys.

Sometimes that process starts with a little bit of fun.

The Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association celebrated its 100th anniversary this past year.

On Wednesday, it will celebrate the one year anniversary of its Young Lawyers Committee.

Created by Michele Mirman after she was installed as president a little more than a year ago, the BWBA’s Young Lawyers Committee is off to a good start even if it was a little slow going at first.

“It has been both really exciting and nerve wracking because it’s new and you don’t know if people really want to participate,” said Natoya

McGhie. “It’s been challenging, too, because sometimes you mention young lawyers and people think, ‘Well I’m not young,’ and they don’t want to come. But it’s really for anyone who is looking to start a network or looking to find a mentor.”

Young lawyers committees are fairly common among bar associations — the Brooklyn Bar Association has one and

paint-and-sip event that turned out to be a lot of fun,” said Justice Edwards. “It was relaxing and fun, but it gives us a chance to invite new people into the group and talk to them about joining. I think we got at least two new members from that event.”

BWBA encourages anyone interested in joining its Young Lawyers Committee. There is no age limit to attend its membership party on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. at Borough Hall. It also has tentative plans to host a speed networking event on Remsen Street at the Brooklyn Bar Association on Wednesday, Sept.

The three new members join a 14-person board that oversees the VLP’s finances and growth. The nonprofit organization is an arm of the Brooklyn Bar Association that represents indigent citizens in Brooklyn and trains and mentors young attorneys.

Volunteer Lawyers Trying to Help Kids With Immigration Proceedings

As children are receiving the brunt of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy that separates parents from their children, the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project is trying to rally local attorneys to try to help.

VLP is hosting a continuing legal education program titled “Representing Children in Immigration Proceedings” at Abrams Fensterman in Downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday, Aug. 15. The seminar is worth two CLE credits and is free for anyone who signs up to do pro bono work.

There is no right to counsel in immigration proceedings, even for children, and children without representation are five times more likely to be deported, according

to VLP. “A lot of our cases involve children who came into this country illegally, but have a path to a green card or citizenship if they can get an attorney,” said Kaavya Viswanathan at a similar event VLP hosted in July 2017. “However, they are ineligible to have one appointed to them and would likely be deported even though, legally, they are eligible to remain in the U.S.” Viswanathan, the pro bono managing attorney from The Door’s Legal Services Center, will be on hand for the two-hour event to discuss the various aspects of representing children during immigration proceedings and the unique challenges they face.

The training is expected to cover common forms of legal relief available for children, such as Special Immigrant Juvenile Status and asylum,

and will explain to attorneys how they can obtain such relief.

“Pro bono representation is crucial for these children,” Viswanathan said. “They are not entitled to appointed counsel in immigration court and these cases are extremely high stakes. If these children are deported, they will be returned to countries where there is nobody to look after them, where maybe gangs are looking for them to try to hurt or kill them.

“By taking these cases you are making a significant difference in their lives in terms of letting them stay in the U.S. and opening up doors to education to careers that wouldn’t be available to them in their home countries,” she continued.

“Many times it is a life or death difference, which makes this work extremely rewarding.”
