B’klyn, Queens Leaders Offer Workshops For Immigrants By Paula Katinas Brooklyn Phoenix

In the wake of a shocking incident in which a Muslim woman was verbally harassed by a fellow passenger on an S53 bus traveling from Bay Ridge to Staten Island, an attack that was captured on video, elected officials and immigration rights advocates in Brooklyn and Queens are planning to hold workshops and forums to assist immigrants. Confusing Facts and Opinions By Tom Purcell

“The Pew Research Center quiz was harder than I expected.” “Ah, yes, you speak of the recently released survey in which Pew quizzed 5,035 adult Americans to determine their ability to distinguish between factual information and opinion statements in the news.” “That’s right. The Pew website lets anyone take a quiz featuring 10 statements, five that are true-or-false factual statements and five that are opinion statements. Pew told me to ignore whether or not a statement is accurate and also to ignore whether or not I agree with it. I follow the news and figured I’d ace the quiz, but I didn’t.” “Let’s take a look at the quiz. Pew’s first statement says, ‘Abortion should be legal in most cases.’ Did you classify that as a fact or an opinion?” “I classified it as an opinion and got it right. This is a contentious issue, but the statement is still an opinion.” “Pew’s second statement said, ‘Immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally have some rights under the Constitution.’ How did you classify that one?” “It’s factual. Look, it’s true that undocumented immigrants don’t have the full rights of a U.S. citizen, but, according to the ACLU, our Constitution does afford them some rights,

such as freedom of speech, religion, privacy and others. I struggled with Pew’s next statement, however.” “That ‘Democracy is the greatest form of government’?” “Yes. I classified it as a fact, because I strongly believe that democracy — in our case a representative republic — is the greatest, but the statement is, in truth, an opinion.” “It’s not always easy to separate one’s strong beliefs and opinions from facts. Pew found that each participant was more likely to classify both factual and opinion statements as factual when the statements validated his or her personal politics or beliefs.” “That’s probably why Pew chose 10 statements that may get people fired up, depending on their political points of view. Such as this one that’s still driving conspiracy nuts crazy: ‘President Barack Obama was born in the United States.’ I correctly classified that as a fact.” “Which others did you get right? “It’s a fact that ‘Health care costs per person in the U.S. are the highest in the developed world,’ that ‘Spending on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid make up the largest portion of the U.S. federal

budget,’ and that ‘ISIS lost a significant portion of its territory in Iraq and Syria in 2017.’” “Which opinions did you classify correctly?” “It’s an opinion, not a fact, that ‘Immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally are a very big

problem for the country today,’ and that ‘A $15 federal minimum wage is essential to the health of the U.S. Economy.’” “That leaves us with one more statement: ‘Government is almost always wasteful and inefficient.’” “Even though I know that statement is an opinion, I couldn’t resist classifying it as a fact!” “You did better than most. Pew reports that only 26 percent of the adults surveyed correctly identified all five factual statements as factual, and just 35 percent identified all five opinion statements as opinion.”

“That’s worrisome.” “To be sure. Our republic depends on a well-informed populace to remain strong. If the majority of our people can’t differentiate between fact and opinion — or fact and fiction, for that matter — they can be easily misled. That doesn’t bode

Brooklyn, Queens Leaders Offer Workshops for Immigrants Continued from page 1

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, who led a symbolic unity ride on the S53 bus on July 15 to combat hatred, will host his annual Citizenship Drive on Saturday, July 21, at Borough Hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Saturday, July 28, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest will team up Catholic Migration Services, the Center for Immigrant Education and Training at LaGuardia Community College, law firms and volunteers from Goldman Sachs to hold a naturalization workshop at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City. The July 28 workshop is designed to offer information and guidance to green card holders seeking to become U.S. citizens, according to or-

ganizers, who said lawyers and trained volunteers will assist them in filling out naturalization applications and help them understand their legal rights. The forum will take place in the E Atrium at LaGuardia Community College, 31-10 Thompson Ave., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The immigration workshops are taking place after an incident on an S53 bus on July 11 that shocked New Yorkers. A woman who identified herself as Ashley is seen on a video verbally attacking a woman wearing a headscarf. In the video, “Ashley” can be heard taunting the woman, telling her that Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] is coming to arrest her. “Immigration at the door. Oh wait, is that ICE? Oh mama, they here for you,” Ashley is

heard shouting. It’s not clear if the victim is an immigrant. In response to the S53 incident, Adams led a group of elected officials and ArabAmerican groups on a symbolic unity ride on the S53 on July 15 to send the message that hatred has no place in New York. Adams said his Citizenship Drive is a good place to learn about immigration rights. “Brooklyn is home to everyone from everywhere, and we’re proud of that. Our diversity is our strength, and we grow even stronger by supporting our immigrant neighbors who are making their way through the citizenship process and need a helping hand. I thank our partners in the legal community, as well as our incredible network of commu-

nity advocates, who are coming together to make this drive possible at such an important moment in our history,” Adams said. Adams is working with Dominicanos USA, a DominicanAmerican organization, to put together the workshop. The Citizenship Drive also includes input from the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP); Carnegie Corporation of New York; Citizenshipworks; Coalition of Latin American Consuls in New York; Gay Men’s Health Crisis; the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs; Make the Road New York; New Americans Campaign and other groups. “Assisting Brooklyn residents with the naturalization process enables more people to have access to rights and eco-

nomic opportunities afforded by American citizenship, providing family stability and ensuring our diversity as a nation continues to enrich us all,” said Heidi Lee Henderson, executive director of the Brooklyn Bar Association VLP. Anyone planning to attend the Citizenship Drive should bring a green card, passport, the most recent federal tax return, a marriage certificate and/or divorce papers and any certified court dispositions. Registration is required to take part in the event. Spanish-speaking interpreters will be available. For more information, visit: www.brooklyn-usa.org/citizenship or call 718-665-1920. Republican Realistic About Long Odds Against Ocasio-Cortez

NEW YORK — Candidate Snags Endorsement: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, far left, the surprise winner in the congressional race who unseated 20-year incumbent Joe Crowley in New York’s Congressional District 14, raises the hand of Zephyr Teachout, endorsing her candidacy for Attorney General during a press conference next to the Wall Street Bull statue on Thursday. Republican congressional candidate Anthony Pappas says he knows he has almost no chance of beating rising Democratic star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But the St. John’s University professor is grateful that the publicity surrounding her is also bringing attention to his campaign, which is focused on reforming the judiciary after his own bitter divorce. “You, of course, want to win, but you also have to be realistic,” Pappas said

in an interview on the campus this past week. “But the politics now are volatile and you can say anything can happen.” In fact, Ocasio-Cortez herself was the underdog few people had heard of outside of the Bronx-Queens district last month when she upset 10-term U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary. That brought national attention to the 28-year-old progressive and her positions advocating universal health care, tuition-free college and federal jobs for the unemployed. Pappas, a 72-year-old

Pappas dismisses the judge’s concerns as “hallucinations.” Pappas hopes to take his crusade to Washington but faces long odds, especially since he has

yet to report any campaign contributions. A Republican hasn’t won in this area since 1920, and registered Democrats outnumber Republicans roughly 6-to-1 in the district. The Queens County Republican Party, which endorsed Pappas, did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declined to comment on Pappas. Campaign manager Virginia Ramos Rios said they are not taking the general election for granted.

Haunting Moments Adding Up to a Life: An Interview With ‘Mary Page Marlowe’ Director Lila Neugebauer By Peter Stamelman Special to the INBrooklyn

Lila Neugebauer is the busiest theatre director in New York. In addition to directing Second Stage’s current production of Tracy Lett’s “Mary Page Marlowe,” Neugebauer (pronounced NOY-guh-bower) is also slated to direct “The Waverly Gallery” this fall on Broadway, a new piece with her Bushwick-based company The Mad Ones at Ars Nova in the winter and Christopher Shinn’s “Dying City” next spring at Second Stage. NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSBEAT

On Thursday, July 12, a wrong-way car collision on the Belt Parkway cut dancer Gerald Obah’s life short. After the accident, colleagues, family and friends launched a GoFundMe page called the Gerald Obah Legacy Fund (gofundme.com/gerald-obah-danceworks-legacy). The page quickly surpassed the goal of $20,000 aimed at covering funeral costs. DanceWorks company owner Lisa Mara said she hopes the excess money can be donated to organizations like M.A.D.D or used in support of dancer education.

Festival Opens Beach at Foot Of Brooklyn Bridge to the Public

BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK — Last Saturday, to celebrate the Waterfront Alliance’s annual City of Water Day, Brooklyn Bridge Beach — the shallow, sandy beach near the foot of the bridge — opened to the public. The beach is usually closed to the public, although people still make their way onto it, usually to wade in the water. According to Curbed, there has been a push in recent years to open the beach, but the

city has found several reasons not to do so, including its cost, the danger from waves and combined stormwater/sewage overflow nearby. On Saturday, however, the beach hosted the sixth annual Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race at 8:30 a.m. along with free kayak lessons throughout the day. City of Water Day, now in its 11th year, is a free, family-oriented annual festival organized by the Waterfront Alliance, Curbed said.

Brooklyn to Get Full-Time Comedy Club Near Barclays Center

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A decade-old stand up comedy joint will become Brooklyn’s only full-time comedy club when it moves from what its owner calls an “old divey kind of piece of crap” in the East Village to a new digs near Barclays Center. “It’s a brand new building as opposed to the beat-up old basement,” Park Slope resident Marko Elgart, who owns EastVille Comedy Club with his wife Tara, told Brooklyn Daily. In addition to new surroundings, the club will clean up its act for the family-oriented neighborhood by including magicians and PG-rated comedians. The club, at 487 Atlantic Ave. between Nevins Street and Third Ave., opened July 19 at 8 p.m. Elgart hopes that its new location in the heart of Brooklyn’s downtown area will mean a packed house most evenings, Brooklyn Daily said.

Three Brooklyn Judges Reassigned, Borough Attorneys Defend Their Records BOROUGHWIDE — Three Brooklyn Supreme Court justices – Hon. Bruce Balter, Hon. Cassandra Mullin and Hon. ShawnDya Simpson – have been transferred to new posts in other boroughs. A spokesman for the Office of Court Administration told the New York Law Journal that the three judges were sent to new posts for “operational” reasons, but he declined to elaborate further. Some unnamed sources told the Law Journal that the three judges were allegedly falling behind on their caseloads, not holding enough trial days and spending too much time

away from the bench. However, members of the Brooklyn legal community defended the judges and were critical of the administration’s focus on quantitative measures to measure their performance. Barry Elisofon, a semi-retired Brooklyn matrimonial attorney who once sat on the bench, said Balter is “very in touch with human emotion” and renders thoughtful decisions. Kenneth Montgomery, a Brooklyn solo practitioner and former assistant district attorney, told the Law Journal that Simpson believes that “the presumption of innocence still meant something.”

Immigrant Parents of Toddler Killed in Hit-And-Run Afraid To Attend Funeral in Mexico BUSHWICK — The parents of Luz Gonzales, a 4-year-old girl who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in a laundromat parking lot in Bushwick in June, were not able to attend her funeral in her native Mexico because they were afraid they wouldn’t be allowed to return to the U.S. Her parents, who are working to apply for green cards, were worried about the increase in deportations, according to the Brooklyn Paper. Meanwhile, protesters in the heavily Hispanic neighborhood have increasingly been calling for the arrest of driver Jeannette Maria, who was stopped by po-

lice shortly after she ran over Luz and struck her mother in the parking lot of Clean City at 673 Bushwick Ave. on June 24. Maria is rumored to have family connections to local law enforcement, but neither NYPD nor the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office responded to queries on this subject from the Brooklyn Paper. Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, said in a statement that “Luz and her family deserve justice,” but that “Right now, with the president we have, it’s hard for anyone [who’s not a citizen] to leave the country and try to come back.”

La Lupe, Bushwick Taco Joint, Closed for Health Violations BUSHWICK — A popular Bushwick taco restaurant and cantina was closed by health inspectors after they found filth flies, broken toilets, food being held at unsafe temperatures and workers handling food with their bare hands. The inspectors closed La Lupe at 9 Jefferson Ave. on Wednesday, according to Bushwick Patch. During the inspection, the Mexican restaurant earned 83 points, or almost three times the number it takes a restaurant to earn a C grade. (The number of points is negative). Bushwick Daily rated its tacos the best in the neighborhood last fall. La Lupe was also the name of a well-known Cuban-American singer who was known as the “Queen of Latin Soul” in the ’60s and ’70s, although it’s unclear if the restaurant was named after her.

Brooklyn Not Well-Represented in NYC Restaurant Week

BOROUGHWIDE — This year’s NYC Restaurant Week, which brings special inexpensive menus to almost 400 New York City restaurants, will only be available in 10 Brooklyn restaurants this year. The annual festival will run from July 23 through Aug. 17 and will offer special prefixe menus with $25 two-course lunches and $42 three-course dinners, according to Windsor Terrace Patch. The participating Brooklyn restaurants are the Greenhouse Cafe in Bay Ridge; the Yellow Magnolia Cafe at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden; Talde in Park Slope; Buttermilk Channel in Carroll Gardens; Benchmark in Crown Heights; Brasserie Seoul and French Louie in Downtown Brooklyn; and Barano, Leuca and Harvey in Williamsburg. Patch seemed somewhat miffed that Manhattan’s “more prestigious restaurants” made the list, but Brooklyn’s included, among others, “a Holiday Inn restaurant” (Brasserie Seoul) and “a Bay Ridge dining hall” (Greenhouse Cafe). Queens with two restaurants, the Bronx, with one, and Staten Island with one, fared even worse than Brooklyn. NYC & Company, the city’s tourism arm, chooses participants from restaurants that apply throughout the year.

Urban Explorers Hold Beach Party at Former Gowanus Industrial Site GOWANUS — The Ferrara Brothers’ concrete conveyor belts, visible from the Smith-9th Street station of the F and G lines, have reduced to scrap. The company is opening a new plant in Sunset Park, and the Gowanus site is slated for residential development. In the meantime, however, a group of urban explorers have put the location to other uses. Fif-

ty of them, led by writer Hannah Frishberg and a member of the urban explorer group LTV Squad, descended on the site on a recent Friday night, scattered some beach toys, lit some candles and painted the walls of one of the remaining structures. They cooked hot dogs, played with a beach ball and listened to a stand-up comedy set, according to Gothamist.

A rt NIGHTTIME FOR STRANGERS Nighttime For Strangers, curated by Susan Klein, brings together the work of Skye Gilkerson, Heather Merckle, and Holly Veselka. These artists address the way we treat nature as an other that can to be enjoyed, constructed, feared, and fetishized. They question notions of control: while we may colonize nature, it also holds the power to colonize us. The work focuses on darkness and vastness, incorporating visions of nighttime, space, and time.

UNDERGROUND HEROES: NEW YORK TRANSIT IN COMICS New York’s rich visual vernacular is a colorful setting for illustrated stories, so it comes as no surprise that our iconic transportation system plays a starring role in comics and graphic novels. Drawing on satirical cartoons, comic strips and comic books from the 19th through the 21st centuries, Underground Heroes: New York Transit in Comics is a raucous ride through New York’s transit system from a range of visual storytellers. The exhibit includes such luminaries as Winsor McCay, Will Eisner, Bill Griffith, Roz Chast, Ronald Wimberly and Julia Wertz whose work demonstrates the influence that mass transit has on the stories that are irrevocably woven into the cultural fabric of New York City. historian Shelley Stamp. The series presents a vast array of new 2K restorations, focusing primarily on women directors of the silentera American cinema. As was frequently the case, women directors remained uncredited or were co-credited as director, even though for all intents and purposes, they were the de-facto directors and primary creative forces of the film. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of a handful of films that punctuate the very life-blood of cinematic history. Intensely brutal with very little reprieve or consideration for the audience, it came out of a rift of a sociocultural framework, bursting onscreen with the evisceration of the family structure, youth culture, and cultural fragility in a post-Vietnam United States. Like Night of the Living Dead did five years earlier, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reveals the unraveling framework of society and places the possibility of horror/death to occur anywhere; not in the Gothic castle nor in the fields of Vietnam but, more terrifyingly, in our surrounding neighborhoods. The film also reveals one of the first final girls (Sally) in the American slasher genre. When: Friday & Saturday, July 20th & 21st, 11:45 p.m.

Stroll Down Leonard Street And See a Slice of Greenpoint By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

Could you give a visitor directions to Leonard Street without using your smart phone? Probably not, unless you live there. North Brooklyn is where you go to find this fascinating residential street.

It slices through non-landmarked sections of Greenpoint and East Williamsburg. Stroll this street with us, and you’ll find varied forms of housing: Historic wood-frame houses, old-fashioned multifamily buildings, recently constructed apartment buildings, New York City Housing Authority projects and a vast Mitchell-Lama complex. Let’s start our walk in Greenpoint. We’re obsessed with Manhattan Avenue. Every realestate nerd is. Every donut lover is. Manhattan Avenue’s where you find St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus, a landmarked red-brick 1870s church. It was designed by the Prince of American-Catholic Architects, Patrick Charles Keely. It has a 240-foot spire. Manhattan Avenue’s where you find Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop, which has attained cult status over the years. Whenever we’re in Greenpoint, we feel the magnetic pull of Manhattan Avenue. So we tend to ignore Leonard Street, which is one block east of Manhattan Avenue. To get to the top of Leonard Street, which is at Greenpoint Avenue, take the G train to its Manhattan Avenue station. Or ride the NYC Ferry to Greenpoint’s India Street dock, which is a few blocks away.

They have bright metal fences with gates topped by horses’ heads. If you’re old enough, you’ll think of Mister Ed, the talking horse from the TV series. According to city Buildings Department records, the four-story, 50-foot buildings each have six apartments. All four buildings got their certificates of occupancy in 2007. One of our favorite Greenpoint houses is on this block — 716 Leonard St. The shingle-covered semi-detached house reminds us of a fairy-tale cottage. It’s set waaay back from the sidewalk and nestles against another, taller residential building.

Walt’s Whistle and a Polish Church

At the end of Leonard Street’s first block, which is the intersection of Calyer Street, if you face midtown Manhattan you can see the landmarked Citicorp Center in the distance. These days, people call it 601 Lexington Ave. Oldtimers call it Walt’s Whistle because Walter Wriston headed the bank when the tower was built in the 1970s.

A Horse Is a Horse, of Course, of Course

The very first building you see as you turn the corner onto Leonard Street is 172 Greenpoint Ave. Its retail tenant, a barber shop called the Hair Doc, has a sign out on the sidewalk promising “Un-Crappy Haircuts For Men!” The back of St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church occupies a prominent portion of this first block of Leonard Street. In addition to old-fashioned frame houses and brick rowhouses, there’s an eye-catching row of decade-old multifamily buildings. They’re made of buttery-hued brick with chocolate-colored decorative motifs. Their addresses are 720A, 720, 722 and 724 Leonard St.

Welcome to Leonard Street in Greenpoint.

Seen on Leonard Street: A horse is a horse, of course, of course.

Stroll Down Leonard Street and See a Slice of GREENPOINT — Continued from page 18INB —

In February, one of the condos sold for $1.12 million. The seller had bought this unit for $999,000 in 2014, Finance Department records indicate. Prior to that, the condo sold for $597,712 in 2011.

On the next block of Leonard Street, between Calyer Street and Meserole Avenue, a historic house of worship is a standout among three- and four-story siding-covered or brick houses. It’s the Polish National Catholic Church of the Resurrection at 678 Leonard St. A group of Polish immigrants and their children acquired the property in 1922, the church’s website says. There has been a house of worship on the site since 1838.

A Tattoo Parlor and A Home for Film Noir

On the corner of Leonard Street and Meserole Avenue, there’s a beautiful old house shaped like a salt box. Its addresses are 668 Leonard St. and 131 Meserole Ave. Its retail tenant, Greenpoint Tattoo Co., has a wood-framed glass storefront. In 2006, when the building last changed hands, the sale price was $825,000, city Finance Department records show. On the opposite corner of Leonard Street and Meserole Avenue, there’s a handsome cluster of brick rowhouses. The retail tenant in the corner house, which is 122 Meserole Ave., is the Film Noir Cinema, which moved there in 2017. It rents out movies, which is a rarity in the 21st century. And it has a 54-seat theater that shows movies, some with live musical accompaniment. Film Noir Cinema’s owner Will Malitek told the Greenpointers website that years ago, Smith Funeral Home was located at 122 Meserole Ave. He said the building has an ice chute in the basement that delivered ice, which was used to chill the corpses.

An Old Portico and a New Library

The Leonard Street block between Meserole and Norman avenues is lined with old-fashioned homes. A front door on that block has a beautiful rectangular wood portico with delicate, carved decorations on the top of it. The address of this shingle-covered house is 633 Leonard St. By the way, it changed hands in an estate sale last year. The price was $2.175 million, Finance Department records indicate.

Do You Know the Way To Withers Street?

As you continue walking, you’ll notice 415 Leonard St. on the corner of Bayard Street across from McCarren Park. Abraham Banda constructed this condo building a decade ago. It has an aquahued facade.

Right before Leonard Street passes beneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, there’s mammoth rental-apartment building 395 Leonard St., which the Rabsky Group built a few years ago. It has frontage on Frost and Richardson streets and Meeker Avenue. On a Leonard Street corner on the other side of the highway, Rybak Development is constructing an eight-story condo building that looks like shallow boxes stacked on top of each other. The project’s name, Element 88, refers to the property’s address, which is 88 Withers St.

Greenpoint Tattoo Co. is located in this old-fashioned house on the corner of Leonard Street and Meserole Avenue. At 107 Meserole Ave., which is on the corner of Leonard Street, there are bulldozers on a gravel-strewn lot. The Greenpoint Library building that stood on this site was constructed in the 1970s. It was shut down last year to make way for a new branch that will be combined with an environmental education center. Brooklyn Public Library’s website says construction is being funded by a $5 million grant from the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund, $1.8 million from the state Education Department and more than $14 million in library and city capital funding. Architecture firm Marble Fairbanks designed the complex. It will have lab spaces and two accessible green roofs plus reading rooms, space for library collections and a large community event space.

Apartment Buildings on Corner Lots

A block further down Leonard Street, you cross the intersection of Nassau Avenue — and McCarren Park is close at hand. Leonard Street runs alongside the park between Engert Avenue and Bayard Street. There’s a complicated spot on the street grid where Engert Avenue ends and Manhattan Avenue crosses over Leonard Street. Beyond this point, Leonard Street is located one block west of Manhattan Avenue. Near the spot where Leonard Street and Manhattan Avenue crisscross, you find metal-panel-and-gray-brick-clad condo complex 76 Engert Ave. Tahoe Development completed its construction a decade ago.

Vice President of the Cyclones Steve Cohen also considered the day a huge success. “We had 160 to 200 dogs here,” he said. “We had a birthday party in the back for dogs. It was really done well this year, so we had a lot of fun.” He is also excited to continue the tradition. “I think we were one of the first teams doing it years ago, and each

The tradition, taking place this year on Sunday, July 15, allowed hundreds of dogs and their owners to walk the field in a parade, and watch the game, and also featured pet adoptions from an organization affiliated with the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, and other activities. Premium Sales Manager for the Cyclones Nicole Kneesy has organized the canine-friendly for seven years, and was pleased with this year’s event. “This was one of our best years yet,” she said. “Since I started, this is definitely the most highly attended Bark in the Park that we’ve had. We sold almost 400 tickets to the event and everyone had the opportunity to bring their dogs with them.”

Judge Lillian Wan is the First Asian-American Woman On the NY Court of Claims By Rob Abruzzese Brooklyn Record

By Rob Abruzzese, Legal Editor Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Judge Lillian Wan was named as the first female Asian-American woman to serve on the New York Court of Claims when she was confirmed by the state Senate during a ceremony in Albany recently. “She’s making history, history in this chamber, history in this state as the first Asian-American woman on the Court of Claims,” said state Sen. Jesse Hamilton at the confirmation. Court of Claims judges serve a nine-year term and handle civil cases that are brought against New York and state-related agencies. Judge Wan, who graduated from Bingham-ton University and Albany Law School, was initially appointed by then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg to the Kings County Family Court. As a Family Court judge, she heard cases involving child custody, abuse, juvenile delinquency and family offenses. She also presided over the “crossover youth” part, which involves children in the state’s child welfare system or foster care.

Before joining the bench, Judge Wan worked for the Administration for Children’s Services in the Family Court Legal Services Division. She also served as a court attorney-referee in the Kings County Surrogate’s Court. Judge Wan is active in many of the local and state bar associations including the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Columbian Lawyers Association of Brooklyn and the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY). She also sits on the board of directors of both the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association and the New York State Family Court Judges Association. “AABANY is immensely proud of Judge Wan,” said James Cho, AABANY president. “Her experience in the courtroom, compassion, and unwavering dedication make her an unparalleled candidate to serve as a judge on the Court of Claims. “Judge Wan’s confirmation also reminds us of the progress we have made in advancing diversity and inclusion on the bench; Asian Pacific Americans and other minority communities continue to be underrepresented on the bench, but we are gratified to see

Judge Lillian Wan, left, with Linda LoCascio, the immediate past president of the Columbian Lawyers Association of Brooklyn, during a recent monthly meeting where the judge gave a continuing legal education lecture. that New York is appointing minority judges like Judge Wan,” Cho continued. “Her appointment marks a historic and significant step forward in making the judiciary more diverse and inclusive.”

There were seven other judges nominated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and confirmed by the state Senate including James McCarty, David L. Lewis, Joel M. Cohen, John Higgit, Chris Ann Kelley, Francis Kahn III and Michele Rodney.

Hon. Lillian Wan, pictured here with her husband Adam Brodsky at the Brooklyn Bar Association’s annual dinner, is an active member of the local legal community and is member of the board of directors of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association. Last month, she became the first Asian-American woman to be named to the New York Court of Claims. East Brooklyn Congregations Assembly Celebrates Victories, Urges More Push By Francesca Norsen Tate Religion Editor INBrooklyn

East Brooklyn Congregations’ standing-room-capacity assembly on Sunday, July 15, celebrated key victories with New York City and the courts on senior housing and repairs at NYCHA housing. EBC, founded in 1979, is an affiliate of the Industrial Areas Foundation and a non-partisan organization composed of dues-paying member institutions: congregations, schools and homeowners associations. EBC has deep membership bases in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Ocean Hill-Brownsville, Bushwick, Crown Heights and East New York that focus on organizing and fighting to improve their communities in areas such as senior housing, public safety, education, recreation and parks. At least a dozen clergy and lay speakers organized their remarks along several strategy points: Victories for a Better City, Implementing Our Victories Successfully, Holding Everyone Accountable, Growing Our Power and A More Just City for Everyone. Joanne Kennedy, representing Our Lady of Sorrows Church, described the court fight against NYCHA, notably then-U.S attorney Preet Bharara’s agreeing to open an investigation into NYCHA and the mayor’s refusal to do urgent repairs. “We took the U.S Attorney’s office on tours of NYCHA buildings here in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx and all over the city so they could see for themselves what families have to live with,” said Kennedy. The Rev. David Brawley, a longtime EBC leader, reminded the crowd that the funds they won from the city is “a down

We want—and require—more to save the soul of our city. We are requesting of our city $2 billion, as an investment in the salvation of the soul of New York City. What does that mean? That means with that money we can literally change the lives of 65,000 New Yorkers,” he said to extended applause. The Rev. Steven Carter of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church said, “We are going to show [elected leaders] that we are tired of our people living in rat-infested housing, while other communities live in rich invested condos. We are going to show them that if you want our votes in the

polls then you must get our victories… When you leave here this afternoon, depart with a new attitude. Pick up the phone and call your elected officials. Hold meetings in your homes for others that are concerned about their conditions. Send emails and use social media to get the word out.” An impassioned Trina Scotland of St. Paul Community Baptist Church gave an update on EBC’s latest Nehemiah Housing building projects. “East Brooklyn Congregations just won a big $500 million fund but we are not waiting around for the city to start building! We are people of action, and if you are angry or tired of something, organize a house meeting. No one is going to listen until you have some power. Do one-on-ones with your neighbors, and see what their concerns are. Develop a solution and then take some action.”

BrooklynONE Productions Presents ‘Godspell’ July 27-29 By Francesca Norsen Tate Religion Editor INBrooklyn

Grace Parishioner Describes National Convention As Respectful and Loving Grace Church parishioner Kathy Page is very active in the ministries of her parish in Brooklyn Heights. Earlier this month, she also had the opportunity to participate in the wider Episcopal Church’s triennial gathering, the General Convention, in Austin, Texas. Page experienced the legislative process firsthand as an alternate deputy, which meant being attentive and prepared for any moment in which she would have to stand in for a regular voting deputy. She sat down with INBrooklyn to share her experiences and observations. “It was a great honor to be there and very inspiring,” said Page. “I came back with a t-shirt that says, ‘Think and imagine a world in which love is the way.’ This is actually a quote from our presiding bishop, Michael Curry, from his sermon at the royal wedding. That was—for me—the theme of the convention: Finding a way through differences in which love is the way. “There were a lot of issues coming up at the general convention that were controversial in a certain way,” she added. “People held strong opinions on both sides. But somehow through that time we managed to come to a middle ground and compromise, so that there were no winners and losers. Everyone got part of what they advocated for, and were able to concede part of what they were hoping for, which I really feel would be a good model for our current government—in Washington and our state government too, which seems to have a hard time with compromise. “For the first time this year,” Page went on, “the House of Bishops joined with the House of Deputies, in what they call ‘TEConversations.’ The focus was on the three main pillars of the Jesus Movement. Those three main focus points for the next three years are Creating Beloved Community, which is really about racial justice and reconciliation; Creation Care and Evangelism. Sometimes Episcopalians get a little nervous when they hear about evangelism, but it doesn’t have to be preaching doomsday in the streets. It can also be sharing your stories which your friends and neighbors.”

Once she had her first child, Jason, she stayed at home to raise him and four years later, his sister Heather. Eleanor was known to have a vibrant, animated, light-hearted demeanor. Many are witnesses to her kind and loving heart whether it be at home, at work, with relatives or even strangers. Eventually, Eleanor went back to work as a school aide for several schools within the NYC Department of Education. Eleanor was a giver and always thought of others before herself. She put her heart and soul into her family members and loved ones, and made them laugh joyfully along the way. Her children were vital to her and even when they were well into their adulthood years, she always reminded them to take their phone, keys and wallet before they headed out the door and to call her when they got home.

In 2010, her daughter Heather married Matt. Eleanor considered him as not just her son-in-law, but as another son and always accepted him with open arms (even though he was a diehard Yankee fan). Perhaps Eleanor’s greatest role in her life was when she became “Nanny” to her granddaughter Audrey Violet. Eleanor was instrumental in Audrey’s upbringing, watching her several times a week while both Matt and Heather worked full time. There is great comfort in recognizing that Eleanor was truly able to experience a precious bond with her granddaughter, even though it was cut terribly short. Shortly after 2018 began, Eleanor suffered a significant brain hemorrhage (stroke), which began to impact her in ways they never could have imagined. The stroke, compounded with other medical conditions, made the road to recovery challenging. Progress was minimal at best and Eleanor still suffered moderate physical and cognitive difficulties. Eleanor had a condition called Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA). The other diagnosis was Alzheimer’s Disease, the same condition that Eleanor watched her mother

endure for many years. On July 15, 2018, Eleanor’s suffering ended. Mass of Christian Burial St. Andrew the Apostle R.C. Church. All services entrusted to Clavin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CAA Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, https://secure.massgeneral.org/caa-research, note Eleanor’s name in the tribute field OR Alzheimer’s Association. Visit http://act.alz.org/ goto/nannysteam2018 to join/donate to “Nanny’s Team 2018” as Eleanor’s family participates in the Walk To End Alzheimer’s in memory of Eleanor (and her mother Violet). If you prefer to make a donation via check, you can make a check to “Alzheimer’s Association” with Eleanor’s name noted in the memo line and mail it to Chapter Headquarters, NYC Chapter, 60 East 42nd Street, Suite 2240, New York, NY 10165.
