Ten years ago, Cobble Hill resident Kim Bush was a full-time yoga teacher with a healthy lifestyle.

Today, she is recovering from a decade-long bout of Lyme disease. The tick-borne illness, which went undiagnosed for years, gradually attacked her nervous system, joints and muscles, sending her quality of life “out the window.”

On Monday, the mayor and the city’s Department of Health (DOH) raised the alarm over the increasing number of Lyme cases like Bush’s in New York City.

Last year, there were 1,083 reports of the disease among New Yorkers — an increase of 137 cases from 2016.

This includes 383 cases in Manhattan, 381 in Brooklyn, 149 in Queens, 123 in Staten Island and 47 in the Bronx.

Cases are up 44 percent over the past five years, and a number of cases may as yet be undiagnosed.

The city says it is putting into place new, aggressive approaches to the disease, but also wants people to educate themselves.

“This is a very serious disease, with really lasting impact on people and we’ve got to take it seriously and we’ve got to fight it in every way we can,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference on Staten Island, home to more disease-bearing ticks than any other borough. He added, “One bite from one of these ticks can change someone’s life really for the worse.”

While a red rash following a tick bite occurs in 60-80 percent of Lyme disease patients, 20-40 percent never see the tell-tale “bullseye” shaped ring.

bite from a tiny tick, which she never even saw.

“I never knew I was bit,” Bush, 46, told the Brooklyn Heights Press.

Bush said she had traveled on Long Island and throughout the northeast — areas where infestation by Ixodes scapularis, also known as Blacklegged Ticks or deer ticks — are common, but has no idea where she was actually infected.

Symptoms All Over the Map According to DOH, early symptoms of Lyme disease include a skin rash that expands over several days, fever, headache, muscle and joint aches and swollen lymph nodes. If left untreated, the infection may spread to the joints, heart or the nervous system.

Bush said her symptoms “crept in slowly. It didn’t take me down drastically in the beginning.”

She recalls feeling dizzy and getting a “weird electric feeling” in her nervous system, “like a headache all over my body.” This progressed to “total exhaustion — the four-hour nap type of exhaustion.”

After it attacked her brain, she had trouble finding words, experienced “brain fog” and couldn’t keep thoughts going.

Diagnosis is difficult because “different people have different symptoms,” she said. “It masquerades as Parkinson’s, MS or ALS.” It took years for doctors to finally diagnose Bush with Lyme disease. If diagnosed soon after infection, the antibiotic doxycycline would probably have been effective. Being diagnosed so late meant that extreme measures were needed.

“It outruns your immune system,” Bush said. “If you miss that window, it burrows deeper into your tissues

and brain” and there’s no guaranteed fix.

City Taking Steps “Not only have the number of cases in human beings gone up, we are seeing more and more ticks in our tick surveillance program and close to 20 percent of these ticks are ticks that have Lyme disease,” DOH Commissioner Mary Bassett said at Monday’s press conference.

The conference was held in Staten Island because, while most New Yorkers catch Lyme disease outside of the city, between 50 to 60 percent of Staten Island residents catch the disease right on in their borough.

Defendants Plead Not Guilty in NXIVM ‘Sex Cult’ Case

An heiress to the Seagram's liquor fortune, a TV actress and the co-founders of a purported self-help group appeared in court together for the first time on Wednesday to face charges in a case accusing the group of branding women and forcing them to have unwanted sex.

Keith Raniere, the former head of NXIVM, and Allison Mack, best known for playing a teenage friend of Superman in the CW network’s “Smallville,” pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges contained in a revised indictment unsealed earlier in the week. They had previously pleaded not guilty to sex-trafficking charges.

The new indictment added heiress Clare Bronfman and group co-founder Nancy Salzman as co-defendants.

Both also pleaded not guilty.

The defendants mostly appeared not to acknowledge each other in court, except for Mack and Bronfman, who smiled and chatted at the defense table before the proceeding began.

Raniere is being held without bail. Bronfman is free after posting a $100 million bond. Mack and Salzman are free on $5 million bonds.

The three women left court without speaking to reporters. All have denied wrongdoing.

A lawyer for Raniere, Marc Agnifilo, said the alleged victims were never forced to do anything against their wills.

“These were choices by grown adults about how to be with each other,” said Agnifilo, who in court papers has called the Justice Department the “morality police.”

Prosecutors have accused Mack of helping Raniere recruit women to a secret sub-society within NXIVM, for years a target of criticism by ex-followers who called it a cult. The women were branded by way of a surgical tool with a symbol that resembled Raniere’s initials and were expected to have sex with “masters,” prosecutors said.

Part of the sub-society operation was alleged to have taken place in a prominent Brooklyn Heights tower, where up to a dozen slaves allegedly stayed for various rituals over the past year, according to Frank Parlato, a former publicist for NXIVM who has turned whistleblower.

Mack was in the building when she was arrested in April for allegedly serving as a slave master, Parlato said at the time.

The government has charged Bronfman with bankrolling the conspiracy by giving away tens of millions of dollars of her fortune to support Raniere.

On Wednesday, the judge moved a trial date from the fall to Jan. 7.

Grand Canyon Diner Making a Return To Montague St. in Armando’s Space

The Grand Canyon Diner, which was a neighborhood fixture at 141 Montague St. before it closed in 2015, is returning to the main street of Brooklyn Heights — in the same next-door space vacated earlier this year by the classic Italian restaurant Armando’s Restaurant and Bar. Armando’s was a mainstay in the Heights since 1936, but longtime owner Peter Byros sold the building at 143 Montague St. for $7.418 million in February and closed the restaurant in May, the Brooklyn Heights Press’ Mary Frost reported. Byros had shuttered the restaurant once before, in 2008, and rented the space to Spicy Pickle, but when that eatery closed the following year, he reopened Armando’s.

Grand Canyon Diner owner Gonzalo Carretto signed a 15-year lease for the ground-floor space at a rent of $27,500 per month, and the diner is slated to open there in the fall, according to Commercial Observer.

Carretto also owns another Grand Canyon Diner in Park Slope as well as Mex Carroll’s Diner, which offers American and Mexican comfort food, in Brooklyn’s Columbia Street Waterfront District. Eric Goldschmidt of Meridian Capital’s retail leasing division, which represented both sides in the Montague Street transaction, told Commercial Observer that the building’s current owner, Uri Koptiev, “decided to go with Gonzalo because of his 25-year history in the neighborhood.”

During high tick activity season from May to July this year, the city monitored ticks at two sites in Manhattan, four in the Bronx, seven in Queens and two in Brooklyn. On Monday, Bassett said the city will be increasing the number of monitoring sites.

The city is also exploring using pesticides on grasslands and experimenting with a new fungus-containing bio-pesticide “that is biologically active but it doesn’t hurt people,” Bassett said. Researchers are also looking at the possibility of treating the deer directly.

Public education is also a part of the city’s plan.

“Protect yourself. That’s a big part of the equation,” de Blasio said. “You are your family’s own best line of defense, because you can identify this problem and act on it and the earlier you act on it the better. Use the bug spray, dress in clothing that helps protect you.”

He added, “I love to go out in, you know, sandals or flip flops and all but I have been schooled many a time …

In any area where it is a wooded area or there is tall grasses I’ll put on socks, put on sneakers, those common-sense things really make a difference.”

Bush gives the same advice. “Use spray! I’m such a nature lover it was hard spraying myself,” she said. She also advises people to examine their pets after a walk with them in the woods.

“Your pet will bring home a tick.”

“If you register a bite, get into the doctor’s office that very day if possible. Get doxycycline and insist on a 4to 6-week course of antibiotics,” she said. (DOH recommends treatment for 2 to 4 weeks.)

Bassett confirms Bush’s advice.

“Again, [Lyme disease is] very readily treated with common antibiotics, [and it’s] very important to diagnose it and treat it early.”

What to Do If Bitten By a Tick

Bassett says to always check for ticks after a walk in the woods.

“You need to feel behind your ears, your neck line, your waist line, between your legs and you have to check yourself with actually feeling for them, not just looking for them because sometimes they really are a speck and it’s only by feeling a little elevation,” she said.

“Then if you find a tick you have to remove it safely and that means using a pair of fine tipped tweezers, pulling it out with gentle, continuous pressure from the base where it attaches to the skin.

Either flush it down the toilet or put it into alcohol. If you are not sure how long you’ve had that tick bite, then you should call your health care provider and talk with them about whether you should come in and discuss beginning antibiotic treatment,” she said.

Bush said it’s been a very long 10 years.

“I literally just turned the corner this spring,” she said. After actively treating the disease for the past two and a half years, “I’m getting it back slowly but surely. It feels great.”

Cops Busting Cyclists on Domino Park’s River Street WILLIAMSBURG — The recently opened Domino Park on the Williamsburg waterfront, part of Two Trees’ Domino mega-development, has many attractive features, but the access road adjacent to the park is reportedly creating problems for several bicyclists. River Street, which runs from North Third to South Fifth streets, is a one-way street with no bike lane, according to Gothamist. Not only that, but local police have been issuing tickets to bicyclists who were riding the wrong way. One cyclist whose run-in was caught on film told Gothamist that he was unaware that the road was a one-way thoroughfare. He also said that on his way out of the park, he saw two other cyclists getting tickets as well. “I think the officer recognized that this is not a clearly marked location, which is why so many cyclists are entering the park there, and he is using it to his advantage to hand out tickets,” he said. A spokesperson for the city Department of Transportation said River Street is a private street, and the developer is responsible for its configuration and circulation. A Two Trees spokesperson said in an email that “There’s always a learning curve with the opening of a brand new street, and we are working hand-in-hand with NYPD to educate drivers, pedestrians and cyclists about traffic flow and ensure that it is safe for everyone.”

Decrepit Former Precinct House Will Make Room for School in Sunset Park SUNSET PARK — The School Construction Authority has submitted an application to demolish the decrepit 19th century building that once housed the Sunset Park police precinct to make way for a new school – later clarifying that it will shore up some of the walls, which are slated to be preserved as part of the new structure. The SCA bought the castle-like precinct house at 4302 Fourth Ave., which has been vacant since 1970, from Yosef Streicher for $7.999 million in November, according to

Brownstoner. Because the site is listed on the National Register and the new school would use state funds, the state Historic Preservation Office needed to OK the plans. Last year, the two agencies reached a compromise and agreed that the main building’s street façade would be preserved, but the building’s former stable would be demolished.

The building, formerly the 18th Precinct, was built in 1890-92. It was ravaged by fire in 1980 and has been decaying ever since, Brownstoner said.

W’burg Chef to Open New Izakaya-Style Restaurant BUSHWICK — Chef Joaquin “Quino” Baca of the recently closed Williamsburg favorite Brooklyn Star plans to go back to his roots with a new restaurant at the Bushwick-Ridgewood border that will focus on izakaya-style (meaning Japanese gastropub-style) cooking.

Baca will soon open Teo, a 45-seat restaurant at 321 Starr St. between St. Nicholas and Cypress avenues, featuring “a few noodle dishes, lots of meat skewers and a few composed plates,” according to Eater New York.

The chef worked at Noodle Bar, Momofuku Ssam Bar and Ko before opening Brooklyn Star with a partner. “I certainly not doing anything authentically Japanese. It’s very social, it’s fun, it’s boozy,” Baca told Eater. Teo is expected to open next month.

Party Boat Accidentally Spews Raw Sewage into Waters off Red Hook RED HOOK — Residents of Red Hook and nearby areas were horrified after learning that workers servicing the “party yacht” Avalon accidentally spilled about 500 gallons of raw sewage into the Atlantic Basin on Sunday. The mishap disgorged an amount of human waste equal to more than 300 flushes of a toilet, according to the New York Post. Red Hook resident Kathleen Murphy told the Post that “Red Hook is big on fish, and what do you think the fish will do if they see waste in the area? Attempt to eat it. Then we get sick from the poisoned fish.” The BoatUS Foundation says it’s illegal to discharge untreated sewage on inland waters or within 3 miles from shore. Both the Coast Guard and the state Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the accident. The 80-foot boat is featured on the Prestige Yacht Charters web site, but company president David Hackert told the Post that his firm “does not own or operate the boat” and “had nothing to do with the incident.”

Greenpoint Ferry Pier Closed Due to ‘Unexpected’ Problems GREENPOINT — The city’s NYC Ferry service stopped running to Greenpoint last Thursday because of damage to its India Street Pier, which partially collapsed in 2014. City Economic Development Corporation officials sent out an alert that service to the pier was suspended until further notice because of “unexpected landing maintenance,” according to the New York Post. They wouldn’t reveal what was wrong with the pier

or say how long repairs would take, the Post said. The pier’s gangway collapsed during a snowstorm in February 2014, just moments after passengers were walking on it.

Documents reportedly showed that Billybey, a New Jersey-based company that operated the cross-East River ferries at the time in conjunction with NY Waterway, hadn’t inspected those portions of the pier that are underwater.

Artists Fills Potholes With Mosaics, But DOT Calls Them a Safety Hazard BOROUGHWIDE — A Chicago-based artist recently filled several potholes in Manhattan and Brooklyn with NYC-themed mosaics, but the city Department of Transportation doesn’t exactly think this is a good idea, according to PIX11. Jim Bachor, who has installed more than 70 potholes with mosaic art in various cities since 2013, insists his creations are safe. However, the DOT believes that they are a hazard because drivers may

become distracted by the art, PIX11 said.

The artworks in question, which make up a series called “Vermin of New York,” depict a rat, a pigeon, a cockroach, Donald Trump and a bouquet of flowers. To create his mosaics, Bachor spends eight to 10 hours making them in a studio. He then fills the pothole with concrete, installs the art, sets up traffic cones and a tarp, and finally comes back eight hours later to do a final cleaning.

Number of Filings for New Condos In B’klyn is Highest Since Recession BOROUGHWIDE — Plans for 547 new condo units in Brooklyn were filed in Brooklyn in June, making the first half of this year exceed any full year since the 2008 recession. According to The Real Deal, these numbers were largely driven by large-scale condo projects, including Hope Street Capital’s 165-unit warehouse conversion at 98 Front St. in DUMBO and CM Group and LIVWRK’s 163-unit partnership at 111 Montgomery St. in Crown Heights. The largest other development in the group was Guy Iber’s 32-unit development at 1325 Herkimer St. in Ocean Hill.

“In another post-recession first, the number of new 100-plus-unit condo filings in Brooklyn was tied with that of Manhattan for the second straight quarter,” The Real Deal said.

Charmaine Johnson Takes the Reigns 0f the Court Internship Program

The late Izetta Johnson was a court employee for roughly three decades who built a legacy when she started an internship program in the Brooklyn court system in 1989 that remains unrivaled in the other boroughs of New York City.

Today, Charmaine Johnson (no relation) is building her own legacy as she has taken the reigns of that internship program from Izetta and it has continued to flourish.

“I find this job extremely rewarding because I have touched so many lives and they have touched my life as well,” Johnson said. “They affect you and they show you a different side of how people are.”

She always brings other court employees with her so that the kids can see people like them working in the court. “Some of the students have a negative connotation about the courts and when they see someone who looks just like them working for the courts, their faces light up,” Johnson said.

Johnson, one of six siblings, moved to the U.S. from Jamaica when she was 10 years old and eventually attended William H. Maxwell High School, an all-girls school at the time in East New York. After high school, Johnson attended the Borough of Manhattan Community College and the College of New Rochelle.

After college, Johnson enrolled in a stenotype academy that would have set her up to be a court reporter. However, she became pregnant and dropped out of the program. Eventually, she heard about an exam for law stenographers, took it and began working for Justice Salvatore T. DeMatteo in Brooklyn Supreme Court.

When Justice DeMatteo retired, Johnson bounced around the court system working for various judges before she went to work for the Law Department. She didn’t know Izetta Johnson at the time except through the summer internship program because she had requested interns each year. When Izetta retired, though, Charmaine applied for her job.

“I immediately had such a great respect for Izetta even though I never worked alongside her because I had no idea what went into this program and how much you give up of yourself,” Johnson said. “During the summer, I end up coming in early nearly every day and leaving late. But I love what I do. Seeing the joy the students get from it makes it a cake walk.”

Johnson is no mere supervisor and often explains her job description as similar to a psychologist, mom and disciplinarian.

She is responsible for approximately 100 students each year: between 70 and 80 in the Student Employment and Internship Program, more from a program called Work, Learn and Grow during the fall and spring along with various other student volunteers as well.

The students come from four boroughs, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan, and range in age from as young as 14 to college students. They are placed in each of Brooklyn’s courthouses and perform just about every job aside from judge though they do assist

judges and court officers.

The program not only introduces the students to the many different jobs in the court, but through programs Johnson sets up, it teaches them a lot of valuable life skills as well. This month they will take a resume class, a financial literacy class, and will even go to an anti-bullying workshop.

The final week of the internship is dubbed competition week and includes best dressed, best interview skills and a mock trial competition. Some of the students will even participate in an annual basketball game against the court officers at McLaughlin Park in Downtown Brooklyn.

Getting the kids through the programs usually takes extra effort from Johnson. She keeps her office door open and invites any of them to come in and talk to her. She also puts it on herself to make sure that they are all fed when they come to work and has even paid for some of their MetroCards to get them to work.

“I form a close bond with them and they end up sending me pictures of them,” Johnson said. “It’s not like they just pass through, no. This is hands-on stuff.”

One student who went through the program, Jonathan Forsythe, Johnson is particularly proud of because he struggled to adapt early on, but eventually he became one of her better interns.

“I’m so proud of him because when he first came here, he was lost,” Johnson said.

“Now he’s getting ready to graduate from ASACollege this month. He sent me a ticket to the graduation at Madison Square Garden later this month, and I have to make sure that I’m going to go because he told me that his grandmother might not be able to make it. I can’t see the potential that some of these kids have and not support them.”

While a lot of credit is given to Johnson for her work in the program by the judges and other court staffers, she points out that the programs would not be possible if not for the work of Izetta Johnson; the judges of the courthouse, especially administrative Judges Hon. Matthew D’Emic and Hon. Lawrence Knipel; and Chief Clerks Daniel Alessandrino and Charles Small.

Back when the Dodgers were still here in Brooklyn, the team’s beloved pitcher, Carl Erskine, lived in Bay Ridge.

He and his family rented a rowhouse on Lafayette Walk during baseball seasons.

In a book by Ed Shakespeare called “When Baseball Returned to Brooklyn,” Erskine reminisced that Bay Ridge “was like a small town” in his ball-playing days.

“The neighbors were all great and took care of my family,” Erskine recalled.

Lafayette Walk is a pedestrian-only street that’s less than a block long. Its entrance is on the 94th Street block

This time of year Lafayette Walk looks especially charming, with flowers blooming in residents’ gardens and umbrellas unfurled over patio tables.

Erskine spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the Dodgers, mostly in Brooklyn and then briefly in Los Angeles after the team’s move to California. He retired from the Dodgers in 1959.

Erskine pitched in the World Series in years that the Dodgers lost to the New York Yankees. And he started the fourth game of the 1955 World Series, which of course is the World Series the Brooklyn Dodgers won.

A word of caution: You can park on Wogan Terrace only if you’re a resident. If you’re not, your car will get towed. It’s a private street.

The Tudor-style rowhouses on this terrace are eye-pleasers with slate roofs.

Karen was known for her contagious smile and warm heart. She was a member of the American Legion and a volunteer at the V.A. Hospital, where she later worked for many years.

Mostly I remember her with Bob, and how much they loved each other.

We spent every holiday, and lots of just plain old days, with them. So many parties we had at their apartment—so many Christmas gifts we opened there, so many birthday cards we read. To know Ruth was to want to know her forever. Her closest friends, Aurora and Peggy, she had known since girlhood. But she made new friends just as easily. I remember once, after she was hospitalized for a brief procedure, the woman she shared a room with for, like, two days became a friend for life. She and Bob loved to be near the

water, and spent many vacations in Montauk, where she’d also gone with her girlfriends.

Later, for years, they loved spending time at my sister Trish’s house there. Ruth was absolutely crazy for old movies—of course, they weren’t old when she was growing up and TCM was always on at her house, unless she was watching her stories or Bob was watching golf. When she was a teenager, she and her girlfriends went to see Frank Sinatra—who she also loved all her life—at the Paramount in Brooklyn, and then, after he emerged from the stage door, they followed him down the street to the barber shop and watched him get his haircut. And according to Ruth, “He never knew we were there.”

Uh-huh. Because you can just imagine how subtle they were…Even after losing most of her memory, she loved old movies, especially musicals. One day, I went

by for a visit, and “Meet Me in St. Louis,” with Judy Garland, was on.

Since I’m also crazy for old movies, I of course sang along with “Clang Clang Clang Went the Trolley…” and Ruth smiled and tapped her knees and swayed back and forth. It was clear that day that even after her illness had stolen so much from her, that dreamy teenage girl, who’d swooned over Sinatra and cast herself in her imagination in every musical she ever saw, was still there. FAITH IN BROOKLYN Four Brooklyn Churches Receive Sacred Sites Grants Summer Sings at Grace Church Beckon Hymn-Lovers

How many readers have come across the hymn considered the cure for those with phone trouble?

Titled “The Royal Telephone,” this hymn, assuring the faithful that there’s a steady lifeline to God, has become a perennial favorite at the Grace Church Summer Sings, which start on August 7.

The Summer Sings, held on Tuesdays in August, provide the chance to sing and learn more about beloved hymns, and to explore some of the humorous aspects of hymnody.

Each week will feature a presentation from clergy and musicians.

The Rev. Dr. Allen Robinson, rector of Grace Church, will give the first presentation, on August 7.

Pam McAllister, director of music at the Park Slope United Methodist Church, presents on August 14.

Grace Church’s organist-choirmaster Paul Richard Olson gives his talk on August 21; and longtime Grace chorister and hymnologist Patricia Woodard will give her presentation on August 28.

The Summer Sings run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the air-conditioned McKittrick Choir Room. All are welcome.

Film Draws Its Inspiration From the Poetry of Orphans St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church will host a free screening of “Voices Beyond the Wall: Twelve Love Poems from the Murder Capital of the World.”

“Voices Beyond the Wall” (director Brad Coley and executive producer James Franco) is inspired by the writings of girls living at Our Little Roses, an Episcopal orphanage in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Fr. Spencer Reece, an Episcopal priest and award-winning poet, spent two years at Our Little Roses helping residents find their voices through poetry, to help heal the trauma of their pasts and prepare to transition to an uncertain future beyond the walls of the orphanage.

He collaborated with Luis J. Rodriguez to edit and publish the girls’ poems in a volume titled, “Counting Time Like People Count Stars” (copyright 2017 by Northwestern University Press).

Fr. Reece will preach at the 11:15 a.m. Holy Eucharist at St. Ann’s on Sunday, August 5, and will be present for the screening, which begins at 1:30 p.m.

The majestic houses of worship throughout Brooklyn and all of New York State have strong histories of the people who built their faith and lives here.

But with many of them approaching the bicentennial mark—and some much older—these buildings need repair. The New York Landmarks Conservancy has led the effort to preserve and protect New York City’s architectural legacy for 45 years.

The Conservancy and its Sacred Sites program have saved more than 1,000 buildings, protecting New York’s distinctive architectural heritage.

Four Brooklyn churches are among those awarded funding in the latest set of Sacred Sites Grants totaling $226,000 to historic religious properties throughout the state.

The Bridge Street African Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church was awarded a $25,000 grant to help fund window restoration.

The church was the first Methodist church with an African-American congregation in Brooklyn and was a participant in the underground railroad during the Civil War. Bridge Street AWME Church has a significant community presence with a wide range of social and cultural programs reaching over 13,000 people a year.

The Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Flatbush, founded in 1654, received a $25,000 grant to help finance new roofs, steeple and gutter replacement, masonry work and restoration to the sanctuary exterior.

The building, completed in 1798, is the third church to occupy the site. The Federal style building, distinguished by its elegant clock tower and steeple, is considered a rare example of New York City’s 18th-century architecture. It serves about 3,000 people in this West Indian neighborhood through a wide range of community activities.

Flatbush-Tompkins Congregational Church in Ditmas Park received a $10,000 grant towards funding window restoration in the sanctuary. The building is considered to be the finest Colonial Revival style church in New York City and serves about 900 people a year through community programs.

First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn Heights was awarded a $10,000 grant towards funding exterior accessibility and entryway restoration. Constructed from 1842-1844, its church was inspired by the King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England. First Unitarian Church reaches about 7,000 people a year through community activities.

Since its founding in 1986, the Conservancy’s Sacred Sites program has assisted more than 750 congregations across New York State with grants totaling over $12 million.

“Religious buildings are key to a community’s history and sense of place,” said Peg Breen, President, The New York Landmarks Conservancy, “and many offer vital cultural and social service programs.

ath and art have joined forces at Sunset Park’s Industry City.

The massive waterfront complex was the site of a collaboration between the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) and Industry’s City new exhibit Escher: The Exhibition and Experience.

The space features over 200 works by the iconic Dutch artist.

According to MoMath Director Cindy Lawrence, the collaboration came about after Johanna Guttman of Arthemisia, the Italian company that produced the exhibition, reached out to her.

“Escher is a really unique artist in that he wasn’t a mathematician and yet a lot of his artwork conveys some deep mathematical topics and ideas,” Lawrence said.

“Symmetry, self-repetition and all kinds of geometric shapes, like lots of tessellations and tiling, are embedded into his artwork. People who like his art are drawn to learning about math.

People who like math and may not be big art fans are drawn into learning about his artistry.

“So to me this is very aligned with what MoMath is trying to do, which is show people that math isn’t the same as One arithmetic,” she said. “It’s not just a bunch of steps. It’s actually a cultural endeavor that relates to different areas that we see around us in the world. Math can be fun, exploratory, creative. At its heart, I believe math is an aesthetic endeavor.”

Elucidating the exhibition earlier this month was M.C. Escher expert, Dave Masunaga -- a presidential teaching award winner in Hawaii who has a long-standing relationship with MoMath, the only museum of math in all of North America and

of Escher’s creations. the only hands-on science center in Manhattan -- who led two tours of the exhibition, at 34 34th Street, Building 6 on Friday, July 13.

“This is one of the largest exhibits on the works of M.C. Escher in the U.S.,” he said. “It’s an extraordinary experience for those who come to see the original works as Escher produced them. These are not reproductions. They are the real thing and and it’s eye-opening not only to see them in scale but to see the amount of detail that went into producing each one.”

“Escher is like an intersection of math and science,” added Guttmann.

“It’s like all STEM subjects and STEAM because it has the arts. This is a very exciting collaboration for us.

We’re very excited to have MoMath doing this lecture series together. Having Dave here was a great treat. Everyone sees that art and math can be fun together. What is unique about this exhibition is that it’s very interactive and immersive. There are a lot of way to see the math and see the abstract concepts.”

“We were able to show participants at least an inkling of the genius of Escher,” Guttmann went on. “It engages everyone of all ages.”

Attendees had a great time.

“It’s my first trip to Industry City. I am really impressed with the space,” said Barbara Cantz, who came from Long Island to see the exhibits. “I’ve been a follower of graphic art my whole life and to see these in person is spectacular. The detail is phenomenal.”

The exhibit opened in June and is expected to be at IC until February.

Report: Alloy Development Buys Two DUMBO Buildings for $50M

Brooklyn-based Alloy Development is reportedly purchasing two interconnected buildings in DUMBO for more than $50 million.

ing to The Real Deal. The building at 50 Jay St. is five stories high, while the one at 42 Jay St. is seven stories high, The Real Deal reported. Phoenix House put the two buildings on the market in January.

Neither Alloy — the developer of the controversial 80 Flatbush project — nor Phoenix House commented on the project, according to The Real Deal.

Plans for 547 new condo units were filed in Brooklyn in June, making the first half of this year exceed any full year since the 2008 recession.

According to The Real Deal, these numbers were largely driven by largescale condo projects, including Hope Street Capital’s 165-unit warehouse conversion at 98 Front St. in DUMBO

and CM Group and LIVWRK’s 163unit partnership at 111 Montgomery St. in Crown Heights. The largest other development in the group was Guy Iber’s 32-unit development at 1325 Herkimer St. in Ocean Hill.

“In another post-recession first, the number of new 100-plus-unit condo filings in Brooklyn was tied with that of Manhattan for the second straight quarter,” The Real Deal reported.
