e were shopping for Mother’s Day flowers. I found myself staring helplessly at the multitude of roses, daises, lilies and at least a dozen more varieties of flowers put on display. I swear stores do that just to make men realize how helpless we are at the face of beauty. Luckily for myself, I had a little lady to help me out, my seven year old daughter Nicky. I couldn’t help but notice a hint of pity in her eyes as she watched me struggle. She smiled and handed me a perfect bouquet that was meant to make her mother forgive us for those dirty coffee mugs we leave behind in the morning. “So, these are for Mother’s Day?” Nicky’s voice suggested she was going somewhere with that question. She continued, “We also have Father’s Day coming soon, right?” “Yes we do,” I intently replied hoping there was something special coming my way. I was wrong. “So, how come we have Mother’s Day and Father’s Day but we don’t have Kids’ Day? And what about us- the children,” asked Nicky. Boy, did I have an answer for her…

It all started nine years ago when Russian American Media extended an open invitation to the families of the local multicultural communities to come together for a day of fun at the park. The turnout exceeded our expectation. Hundreds of families of Russian, Hispanic, Asian, African American, and Indian heritage

How come we have Mother's Day and Father's Day but we don't have Kids' Day? And what about us - the children?! asked Nicky. Boy, did I have an answer for her... came together to celebrate their culture, traditions, and values. There was something special in the air that day. Seeing the children of different nationalities playing together in this beautiful setting just made us, the adults, realize what a colorful cultural quilt we make together when we embrace our differences and contribute those as building blocks of one united community.

Several proactive organizations, including AT&T and Wells Fargo have noticed this synergy and offered to take it to the next level. Thanks to these corporations giving back to the community, next year we were able to repeat this event and add a professional stage where children of different ethnic background could share their culture and performing talents. That was how the International Kid’s Festival was born. But the story does not end there. Several leading health, energy, and education institutions including Western Health Advantage, Health Net, SMUD, and First Five, joined the festival with a goal of educating parents and children about healthy living and ways to build a green, sustainable future. And that is how the festival received its full name – The International Kid’s Festival “Green Future.”

Dickinson has issued a statement declaring the last Saturday of May the official Children’s Day in California. And that brings me back to the question of my seven years old Nicky. “But we do have a Children’s Day, baby! It is the day when you will be dancing on stage at the International Kids this last Saturday of May.” I watched Nicky’s eyes fill with joy of satisfaction as she realized that the adults have not overlooked the little people like her. And how could we? After all, they are our Green Future!

Natalya Vizitiu Natalia is Russian journalist, interpreter, editor and satirical blogger. Born in Novosibirsk, Russia, she graduated from the University of Latvia majoring in English linguistics. City Year Не дать сорваться в пропасть “Понимаешь, я себе представил, как маленькие ребятишки играют вечером в огромном поле, во ржи. Тысячи малышей, и кругом - ни души, ни одного взрослого, кроме меня. А я стою на самом краю скалы, над пропастью, понимаешь? И мое дело - ловить ребятишек, чтобы они не сорвались в пропасть. Понимаешь, они играют и не видят, куда бегут, а тут я подбегаю и ловлю их, чтобы они не сорвались. Вот и вся моя работа. Стеречь ребят над пропастью во ржи. Знаю, это глупости, но это единственное, чего мне хочется по-настоящему. Наверное, я глупец.”

Нет, не глупец знаменитый писатель Джером Селинджер, написавший роман, который стал Американской классикой. Искреннее желание не дать ребенку сорваться в пропасть, предотвратить катастрофу – самое важное что движет организацией CityYear.

Каждый день тысячи молодых людей по всей Америке, в возрасте от 17 до 24 лет одевают красные рубашки с белым крестом и уходят в школы, где их ждут дети, которым без действительно жизненно важной поддержки, суждено потерять себя. Бросить ходить в школу в Америке означает не просто остаться без образования.

По статистике до 90% детей, переставших учиться попадают впоследствии в тюрьму. Большая часть из них становится наркоманами.К сожалению, наша община страдает от этих проблем чаще других – в иммигрантских семьях родители работают на износ, дети остаются без внимания и поддержки в учебе со стороны семей. Это падение длиною в жизнь – полную душевной и физической боли. Так же как и болезнь, такой сценарий гораздо проще предотвратить, чем повернуть вспять, когда беда уже случилась. Поэтому, труд молодежи, «ловцов над пропастью во ржи», заслуживает искреннего уважения и поддержки. Ведь на практике помочь ребенку

Помочь ребенку остаться в школе это не одна воспитательная беседа, а ежедневный терпеливый труд

остаться в школе это не просто одна воспитательная беседа, а ежедневный терпеливый труд, моральная поддержка и жизнь в качестве позитивного примера для подражания. Волонтеры – инструкторы City Year бесплатно помогают отстающим в учебе детям – занимаются с ними в режиме «один на один». Благодаря специальным навыкам, они устанавливают доверительные отношения со своими подопечными и оказывают необходимую моральную поддержку в случае, когда ребенок по каким-то причинам не может получить ее от семьи или учителей. На сайте www.cityyear.org можно ознакомиться с подробными условиями участия в работе этой организации в качестве инструктора. Вкратце, City Year проводит специальную подготовку и платит небольшую стипендию в течение года. После его окончания выдается единовременное пособие на продолжение личного образования в размере 5,500 долларов. В сегодняшней экономике это очень хороший старт карьеры для молодого человека и прекрасная позиция в резюме. Организация City Year обладает наилучшей репутацией среди некоммерческих организаций США и успешно ведет свою деятельность в 24 крупных городах. В Сакраменто ее работа стала возможной благодаря усилиям мэра Кевина Джонсона, который лично поддержал налаживание ее сотрудничества со школами. Молодец Мэр Джонсон, отличная работа! CITY YEAR SACRAMENTO HAS A LONG TERM IMPACT GOAL OF REACHING 50% OF OFF-TRACK STUDENTS IN THE REGION AND MOVING THEM ONTRACK AND TO AN 80% GRADUATION RATE BY THE 10TH GRADE. By improving Attendance, Behavior, reading and math proficiency through the City Year program, City Year Sacramento will help to close the education gap.

Results reported by the Oak Ridge Elementary are a great example of City Year initiatives in action: 93% of all students have shown improvement on the state assessment tests.

90% of off-track students receiving focused support by a City Year Corps Member have shown improvement.

As a result, City Year has achieved 122% of the goal of moving students from off-track to on-track.

y mom was 20 years younger than my father. When she left him, I was seven. I blamed the ministry. She was a gospel singer. He was a run-ofthe-mill evangelist and an amazing guitarist. I could not grasp what drove them apart. I blamed the ministry the same way people blame economy when they fail to find a job.

How can a seven-yearold survive the divorce of his Christian parents?

I started my life by piling up pain. The rate at which I was acquiring it was incomparably greater than my natural development.

My soul had been divided.

A half of it stayed with my dad in Rockford, Illinois; the other half left with my

mother for New Mexico. As Mom and I were traveling farther from the home I knew, my soul was getting thinner, until it could stretch no more. It tore leaving me with a huge gap within. It was bottomless and echoing with pain. It grew into a breach, through which my life started to bleed. Eventually, my heart fell through that severalstates-wide hole and no one bent over to pick it up and hand it back to me. I started growing numb.

I told Mom I didn’t need her church. She had been in it much longer than I, and, look, how it worked-out for her.

I could barely talk to my Dad. Angry doesn’t scratch it. I was insanely mad and aggressive with him. I came up with words no child should come up with – every time hoping he would come

Just when it feels like all the songs have been sung, there always emerges a new poet, washed in pain from petty self-admiration and preoccupation with his own vulnerability. He comes wide-open and transparent; and instead of absorbing, he reflects the light of life. We bask in his talent and enjoy his warmth upon us. Such is the story of the lead singer and co-founder of 'Bradley Clark Band', Bradley Paul Clark.

He wouldn’t yell back. He would let me do it. My father allowed me to speak to him that way because he knew that at the end of the day he would influence the way I would view God. I talked to him terribly and he always loved me.

And then, 7 painful years later, he died. With him, died the hope to get my answers.

I was 14 and I started drinking.

It turned out I didn’t need a church to be successful.

At first, it was bliss. I was good at acting. Although I left music, I was still writing songs. I flourished in business. I landed a job with the largest staffing agency

on earth, and did very well there. The funny part: I got to talk about the Lord with the people I would interview. I’ve been running from this Person, from this Deity, my whole life but I would still talk about Him. My biggest secret: I was always in turmoil. I knew what the answer was. I was just not broken enough to get it. I got sober three times in my 20’s but drugs and alcohol kept finding their way back into my life. And I welcomed them because in spite of the fear to ruin my life I also had a need to numb the pain and anger, and it was stronger. I felt like I was in a car and all I could do was to look out the window. All I saw was a blur of the things going by, literally. Literally. That’s what those memories are like. And the memories that Russian Time Magazine ::

were being made were like that, too. I needed help, but heaven forbid if I would admit that.

The silhouette of my turning point came into view when I lost my money and my standing in the community. My ex-wife kept the house. Worst of all, I had to move in back with my parents. It was ridiculous. This time I was thinking, “I need to checkout of here". I was hit with a sledgehammer.

However, I was still doing drugs. It’s funny how we always have enough money to do dope, but not enough to pay bills. My mom called a “ministry” that came in a white van and took me away to a boot camp. We got out of bed before dawn to pray. The rules were strict. I followed them to the best of my ability because the people in charge had something I did not. They had something no dollar could buy me.

They had control. They had a relationship with God. It was a whole new climate for me.

Then I went into another facility here, in Sacramento.

my problems. The retreat gave me the time I needed to read, think and write.

After having been unable to produce a song in years, I finally got blessed with a new one I named "Shepherd Song".

The retreat prompted me to go back to school and I got a degree in ministerial studies. However, I still didn’t know what to do.

I looked at myself in the mirror and the guy who looked back was telling me, “Now you have a past. Can you be a Christian artist with a past like that? Are you good enough to walk on a stage and turn it into a platform? Are you good enough to stand behind it and deliver the Word?” He was convincing. I didn’t know what the future held. All I knew was that when I sang or spoke there was something different that happened in the atmosphere.

I immersed myself in writing songs and it was therapeutic. I got booked at a place that was called House of Glory. One of my classmates was the pastor of that church.

This was in March, 2009. That was a big thing for my mom.

She had been praying for it to happen for years. She came to see me and she brought my stepfather.

The band and I played about five songs. Then that night I spoke on faith. I didn’t think I looked up my notes once.

After everything was over, I went to talk to my stepdad.

He grabbed my hand – he hardly ever grabbed me before. He said, “We love you. You have our blessing.”

This was coming from a man that didn’t speak much. He had seen me at my best and at my absolute worst. When he grabbed my hand and held it so tight, I listened.

Still means the world to me.

In short, he gave his heart to the Lord that night. Three months later he was in a fatal car accident.

I was dumbfounded. Right until that point I didn’t understand the weight of the ministry. I understood the profession but I didn’t understand the calling.

First, I thought, “If that was the only service I’ll ever do, it’s enough.” Then I realized how selfish and stupid that sounded.

Yes, I’m not a conventional person. I haven’t lived a time-honored, ministerial life, but the Bible says that none of us deserves to be up there behind that sacred desk. Not the most innocent, not the most sparkling white, not with the most spotless record. I don’t deserve to be up there, but by the grace of God I am.

The God that keeps us from falling is the same God that leads us through the valley of death to restore us. He’s not looking for the perfect; He’s looking for the willing to be broken and mended.

He takes us as we are, but loves us enough not to leave us there.

The way I look at it is like this: If someone can be helped by my testimony or by the music that Bradley Clark Band does, who am I to tell God where to put me?

Engagement  Young people must have community people around them – somebody who shepherds them. At their tender age, not only they don’t have the answers. They do not know what the questions are.  I was a great actor.

I say that in another sense.

I was super angry at the world and acting allowed me to be someone else and dump those feeling in the character’s life. Then I watched how the character dealt with those feelings and if he failed… Oh well.  My single mother did the best she could raising me. She was making $3.25 an hour. She would buy us 49-cent TV dinners. I didn’t like the vegetables in them. I didn’t understand why I had to eat them. Now I look back at that time and the strength she had renders me speechless.  I don’t believe it’s shallow of us to admit we want to be stars. The trick is to accept what the package comes with – work, determination and showing up.

It is shallow though to pursue fame for self-service. As the saying goes, talent may get you there, but character will keep you there. I second it.  I never saw people who were involved in drinking and drugs hurting much. They had it all together. I figured if I could be like that – happy, with no pain, – it would be great! I didn’t realize it was a lie until I lost everything.

Twice. It’s hard to run a business properly when you’re loaded half the time.

такая, Наталья Оуэн? Самый простой способ познакомиться - приехать в гости. Возле входной двери, на стене дома Натальи в Fair Oaks, висит официальная табличка, которая оповещает всех о том, что в этом доме живет Почетный Консул Российской Федерации. Дома Почетный Консул выглядит как обычная женщина, хозяйка, любящая и любимая жена, заботливая дочь. Чтобы понять, почему и как Наталья оказалась в Сакраменто, начать нужно будет издалека. Родилась в Казахстане, вблизи границы с Китаем, в семье пограничника. Когда ей было шесть лет семья переeхала на Урал, в небольшой поселок Лелиха, где была настоящая деревенская школа, с печкой. Школьное детство с походами, кострами, спектаклями в костюмах

из марли. Огромную роль в ее жизни сыграла преподаватель английского языка, которая выглядела, как казалось девчонкам, кутавшимся в теплые платки, когда холодало, как настоящая леди, с ювелирными украшениями, косметикой, запахом духов. Знание иностранных языков казалось тогда признаком совершенства. Вполне естественным было желание Натальи поступить в “ИнЯз”, что она и сделала с первой попытки. Жила в общежитии, по утрам мыла полы в соседнем гастрономе. Родители Натальи, как только она уехала учиться в Свердловск, отправились в Белорусию, в Солигорск, возводить калийный комбинат. Через год и Наталья перебралась к ним, перевелась в Минский институт иностранных языков, который и закончила со знанием английского и французского. Студенческая жизнь в Белорусии была насыщенной, скучать было не в ее правилах. Именно здесь, в Минске, Наталья познакомилась с людьми, которые помогли ей сформироваться в дальнейшем, как интеллектуальная и интеллигентная личность. По окончании института отработала год в школе, но горный туризм, которым она занималась в то время, привел ее в горы Казахстана, на горно-лавинные станции Тянь-Шаня. Так выпускница иняза, влюбленная в горы, стала заниматься гляциологией, следя за огромными горными ледниками. Сейчас Наталья признается, что это был уникальный опыт в ее жизни – горы льда кругом, чабаны, иногда приносившие сурков, которых нужно было долго вымачивать прежде, чем приготовить и хлеб, который пекли на камне, нагревавшемся на солнце. А как вы попали в Сакраменто? Еще шесть лет назад мы купили здесь дом, в котором жили и живут по сей день мои родители. В прошлом году Тобиас, с которым мы вместе уже 25 лет, ушел на пенсию и мы решили переехать в Сакраменто. Теперь у нас большая дружная семья. Кирилл, которому 34 года, живет в Сан-Диего, женат. Двое сыновей Тобиаса уже совсем взрослые. Когда вся семья собирается на Новый год, в доме становится шумно и весело.

Почетным Консулом России на Гавайях впервые в истории Российской дипломатии стала женщина – Наталья Оуэн. Наталья, вы состоялись как женщина? Да. Я любовь в жизни встретила. Я очень люблю своего мужа. И он меня любит, мы живем в гармонии. Переехав в Сакраменто и получив официальный статус Почетного Консула России в Сакраменто, она не осталась сидеть сложа руки, и вот уже заработал фонд с обещающим названием «Крылья». Цель? Time, career, family... how to set your priorities straight without losing it all?

oo often in life we feel pressured to choose one essential priority at the expense of another. Making money at times means not having enough time with the family. Having plenty of time usually results in a lack of resources to provide the loved ones with the life we think they deserve.

The truth is our children could care less about how much we earn, but more how much love, affection and guidance we consistently deliver. Unless family becomes a foundation to build a life upon, little achievement can be truly fulfilling.

While one can recover from a job loss and even start a new career later in life, a loss of a loved one to drugs, crime or mental disorder is often very difficult. As usual, when facing difficult challenges we may seek solutions by reaching out to those who’ve overcome them successfully.

We are fortunate to deliver our powerful photo-journalistic images of featured families who have met these challenges due to the creative efforts shown by CoolStyle Photography & Web Design Studio. It was our first time vacationing with another family, the Gilmores.

Favorite family activity: Traveling and movie watching are the big ones, but Jaden loves to bring out the board games.

How do you make it work? I’m still figuring that out. We were dealt a pretty big curve ball last year, so the two of us are learning how to make it work. One of the things I’ve learned is to sit down with my boy and figure out what are the things I absolutely cannot miss. Then I make sure I am there for him for those activities, be it a sporting game, a night out watching the Kings play a particular opponent, or a school event. After that, it is a true blessing to have family and very close friends nearby to help juggle Jaden’s schedule and my work.

о преданиям, которые до сих пор живут в Карпатах, рута – это желтый цветок, который лишь на несколько минут, в ночь на Ивана Купала, становится красным. А девушка, которая найдет и сорвет его, всегда будет счастлива в любви. «Червону Руту» - песню своей молодости, я услышала в исполнении маленькой девятилетней девочки и сразу же подумала, что скорее всего, семья в Америке недавно. Чудесный голос, прекрасный украинский, сдержанность манер и умный взгляд привлекли мое внимание и я решила познакомиться с певуньей. Щiру украiночку звали Татьяна. На протяжении всего разговора с этой девочкой я не переставала удивляться многогранности ее дарований. Танечке было лишь три года когда семья переехала на ПМЖ в Америку. Этот факт вполне мог бы объяснить незнание украинского языка и национальной культуры.. Но вопреки всему, ребенок досконально володiе украiньскою мовою, отлично говорит по-русски and great English skills. Вокруг много одаренных детейкто-то поет, кто-то танцует, кто-то пробует себя в живописи, а у Татьяны получается и то и другое. Глядя на это хрупкое создание, ловишь себя на мысли, что восхищаешься! Для объективности, я позволила себе проверить, действительно ли ребенок настолько всесторонне развит. Сначала я предложила дорисовать картинку и тут же поняла, что это дается Татьяне легко . Community vibe As one young person who we met there said, “I don’t know of another cafe in Sacramento that has such a “happening feel!” This regular at Bella Bru, Andrei Solovchuk, added, “especially on Sundays!” Andrei said, “I starting come here with my University friends on weekends to check out local bands or see artwork”.

And he smiled when he added, “It’s the best spot to meet new people. I met my girlfriend Anna here at Bella Bru last summer.”

Bella Bru creates a sense of a community, a coming together which is an important aspect these days for young people. Bella Bru especially draws a crowd which is diverse in age and ethnic background. When we visited Bella Bru on Sunday, we were delighted to

see older couples dancing (!) on the street to the sounds of local band playing Bosa Nova music. At the same time, a younger group enjoyed conversation over their salads and refreshments. Another pair came with a dog and left it tied to a fence outside. There seemed to be a perfect place for everyone at Bella Bru on this Spring afternoon.

It’s all about the bread Bella Bru doesn’t just serve best coffee in town and fresh, gourmet entrees. Bella Bru offers “real” bread that speaks straight to the Slavic heart. “Every time people have asked me for something, I’ve done it,” the owner, Liz Mishler says. “We started in Carmichael with coffee and pastries and lunch. Then people in the neighborhood said they wanted wine, so we started serving wine. Starbucks started serving Frappuccino’s, then our customers came in asking for them, so I had to figure out how to make them—and make them better.”

The back-story Stories shape the world and there sure is one that shaped Bella Bru throughout it’s 20 years of history. As a college student Mishler working long shifts at Harlow’s—the nightclub and entertainment hotspot on J Street. Then Mishler took a trip to Italy with some girlfriends and promptly fell in love with the eats and atmosphere of its storied cafes. “I loved how people got together and sat around talking and eating,” Mishler recalls. “The cafe was such a gathering place.

I was working late nights at Harlow’s, but I really wanted to be doing breakfast and lunch. I thought, I should do my own Italian neighborhood cafe.”

Upon her return to Sacramento, it didn’t take Mishler long to invest in her idea. She started with an espresso cart in the lobby of the old Senator Hotel — Latte Lizzy, they called her.

From there, Mishler decided she wanted to see if she could make a go of full-service food service, and opened Bella Bru’s first location at Fair Oaks Boulevard and Arden Way.” “My husband grew up in the ArdenCarmichael area,” Mishler says, “and he’s a builder, so he found this great location that used to be a yogurt shop. Thankfully, we had

to do very little to the building to make it ready for service.”

Mishler’s dream of serving early morning meals to latte-loving locals became a reality, and a hit. People love the low-key atmosphere.

Об этом я поведала моей приятельнице, которая сообщила, что в Сакраменто открылся новый салон, который, похоже, мне понравится. Лариса, ваш салон несколько необычен. Вы, наверное, долго мечтали о нем?

- Нет, все произошло неожиданно для меня самой. Так получилось, что небольшой гостевой домик остался не у дел. Сначала пришла идея сделать частный салон. По мере воплощения этой идеи, поняла, что уж если делать, то такой, чтобы женщинам было приятно приходить в него, чтобы они могли здесь не только сделать прическу, но и отдохнуть, встретиться с подругой, выпить с ней чашечку кофе. Кстати, кофе не хотите? У меня он фирменный – очень вкусный! Чтобы не отрывать Ларису от работы, отказалась. В ходе разговора выяснилось, что помогала оформлять салон невестка, например, вот эти два шкафа, которые когда-то были совсем простыми и неприметными, сейчас выглядят ультрамодными -один расписан в модном сейчас стиле, на другом расположились изысканные бабочки. Тумбочка для принадлежностей в виде лондонской телефонной будки, кресла авторской работы, которые вы не

найдете ни в одном магазине. Даже метла «от кутюр»...

Где же вы всю мебель и идеально подходящие к ней аксессуары нашли?

- Покупала на разных сайтах, по одному, но выдержанные в одном стиле – европейском. Сначала купила ультрасовременную сушку для волос. Под ее стиль и стала подстраивать дизайн салона. Все делали с большим удовольствием и любовью. Получилось то, что хотела – маленький и уютный, где можно, например, сделав укладку,принять душ, если нет времени заехать домой. Впрочем, дизайн хоть и необходимое, но все же лишь дополнение к атмосфере уюта и комфорта, который я хотел создать здесь. Скажем, вы давно не видели свою подругу и нет времени просто посидеть поболтать, зовите ее ко мне в салон– пока буду делать вам укладку или стрижку, вы сможете обсудить с ней за чашкой чая или кофе все накопившиеся новости. Еще раз повторю – я создавала этот салон с одной целью, чтобы женщины, которые

приходят ко мне, могли отдохнуть, расслабиться, получить удовольствие, почувствовать себя уникальной, единственной, неповторимой, к которой индивидуальное отношение. А иначе зачем все это? Действительно, зачем? Чего греха таить - большая часть бизнеса сделана из соображений больше экономии, чем морального удовлетворения. Можно найти объяснение этому, а Лариса не стала их искать. Она тоже могла съэкономить и купить стандартную,не радующую глаз мебель, сделать еще одну парикмахерскую, каких в нашем городе предостаточно, но для нее оказалось важнее создать атмосферу изысканности и комфорта, которые востребованы стильными женщинами со вкусом, с желанием быть уникальными и единственными. ur editorial team personally discovered Laura's passion for trying to educate both children and adults about the benefits of making healthy food choices when she emceed California Ag Day at the State Capitol on March 20, 2013. It was there that Laura's team unveiled the "world's largest school lunch tray", (8-foot-byten-foot), which served over 700 children a healthy and fresh "California Advantage" meal. We recently caught up with Laura in Sacramento before she jumped on a plane to do some filming in Los Angeles. We found Laura to be even more beautiful, gracious and sweet in person as she is on television.

Russian Time: Thanks for taking time out for this interview. We understand that your extensive travel and filming schedule is beyond crazy. How do you balance time for your family and career?

Laura McIntosh: Sometimes I think I work a lot, but then I think about my own family who has been farming for over five generations. It is not like I am up at 4:00 am milking the cows, but yes, I still have to get up pretty early on filming days and often am away from home for several days at a time. Fortunately my fabulous husband and kids are very supportive of my career. I really have to give the credit to them, and my alarm clock.

Laura McIntosh: First of all, it is my honor. Anyway from all the photos and videos I have reviewed from past events, it looks like it will be a lot of fun! I appreciate that the organizers believe in promoting a "green future" for our children.

Russian Time: What does "green future" mean to you?

Laura McIntosh: I grew up in the small farming community of Linden, California. Farmers like my parents naturally gravitated towards sustainable farming practices because it just made good economic sense. In today's modern world, not everyone can live on a farm, but nearly everyone can make wise purchasing decisions that can benefit both the health of their own families and the health of the environment.

Thailand" show was awesome. We heard a rumor that you are planning on bringing a television crew to Russia. Is that true?

Laura McIntosh: At this point, we are just in the casual talking stage, but I would personally love to further explore the cuisines of Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Russian Time: As you may know, the former Soviet Union is now made up of 15 independent countries which covers over 100 distinct national ethnicities. Why did you pick those four countries?

Laura McIntosh: My Russian American friends always seem to be from one of those four countries- and I just simply love their cooking! I honestly didn't realize there was that much diversity over there. Awesome.

No wonder the cuisine is so rich. I obviously have a lot to learn.

Russian Time: What are some of your favorite dishes?

Laura McIntosh: I absolutely love blini, pelmeni, pirozhkis, and Uzbek style shish kebobs. There are several soups I really like a lot also, but other than Ukrainian borscht, I can't remember their names. I especially love "Russian Tea Cakes". My Italian grandmother first introduced me to them when I was a little girl. I am not sure how "Russian" those actually were, but, wow, what a cookie. I would love to go in search of the world's most delicious Russian Tea Cake.

Russian Time: If you do decide to go to Russia, would you consider taking us with you?

Вы упомянули о “customer satisfaction”. А что касается цен, то насколько вы конкурентны?

Мой жизненный принцип – лучше продать больше машин и меньше

Американское автомобилестроение терпит бедствие. Это, наверное, xорошие новости для продавцов японскиx машин? В отличие от многих Американскиx “дилершипов”, мы по-прежнему в бизнесе и продолжаем дело. Даже нанимаем на работу новыx людей. Вот только недавно мы приняли на работу еще двуx русскоговорящиx торговыx представителей. Для нас очень важно, чтобы славянскиx покупателей обслуживали на родном языке.

Тренинг для будущих тракистов Карьера тракиста начинается с получения CDL., как известно. Как известно, в Сакраменто множество автошкол и курсов, но не все из них погут подойти тракисту. То проблема с состоянием техники для обучения, то отсутствие нормальной асфальтированной площадки для обучения, то неоправданно высокая стоимость. Иногда вложения неоправдывают результат. Часто такие курсы имеют формальный характер, и знания не даются. Бери трак, вроде того, и сам учись. Мы к этому вопросу подошли основательно. Во-первых, инструктор должен иметь стаж вождения не менее 5 лет. Поэтому, прежде чем куда-либо записываться, поинтересуйтесь. Наш инструктор имеет 8 лет опыта. Причем, мы не просто обучаем вождению, мы передаем необходимые знания. С этого года все усложнилось в DMV, требования ужесточились.

Большой акцент сейчас делается на так называемый pre-trip inspection. Там много подводных камней. Мы не просто обучаем всем тонкостям этого экзамена, но сами постоянно присутствуем при каждой сдаче экзамена и всегда в курсе, на что обращается внимание экзаменаторами, поэтому всегда можем корректировать свою методику в обучении таким образом, чтобы сдача экзамена для обучаемого на наших курсах прошла максимально успешно. Тренируем до победного конца. При этом оплата за курсы вождения происходит только после успешной сдачи. А что важнее гарантии для студента в таком деле? Асфальтированная площадка, в отличном состоянии техника, грамотный и профессиональный инструктор – все это залог вашей успешной сдачи экзамена. После сдачи экзамена у себя же и трудоустраиваем. А что важнее для начищающего тракиста может быть, чем гарантия трудоустройства? Перевозки Этот год несколько лихорадило траковый бизнес. Начало года было отмечено со снижения спроса на перевозки, и многие компании простаивали половинами своих флотов, не имея возможность

выехать из Калифорнии, как только за доллар с копейками за груженую милю. Слава Богу, мы этот период прошли и выстояли. Наши траки не стояли. Мы постоянно были в работе, потому что главной стратегией компании является постоянная загрузка и хороший рейт. Скорректировав свои планы, мы работаем сейчас в уже двух направлениях. 1)Принимаем на работу владельцев траков без трейлеров по контрактным грузам. Предоставляем свои трейлеры и charge который мы снимаем с груза покрывает аренду всех трейлеров, страховки на трейлер и груз. Отдельно оплаты за аренду трейлера нет. 2)Принимаем на работу со своими трейлерами. Это когда все ваше, наше лишь authority. Диспетчируем по обоим схемам, по схеме от дома до дома. В нашем составе две траковые компании, и обе они работают в разных направлениях. Производим набор не только владельцев траков, но и водителей. Оплата – до 40 центов за милю. Для бывших студентов увеличение идет быстро, если нет нарушений на дороге. Поскольку рейтинг безопасности для компании – наше будущее. По-второму направлению компанейские траки и трейлера новые. Мы произвели значительное обновление нашего автопарка. Карьера тракиста – это стабильный доход в семье и достойный заработок. Даже если вы начинающий тракист, но твердо решили встать на стезю перевозок, добро пожаловать к нам. Мы поможем вам вырасти в вашей профессии и подставим свое плечо.

Russian language instruction and Russian literature are integrated into weekly instruction at all grade levels.

The charter school has computers and other technology integration in every classroom. Additional program components include student field trips, student academic competitions, music and drama productions, as well as a rich after school program. COA Elementary and Principal Gonchar embody the philosophy of “whatever it takes, our kids are worth it”.

COA Middle School serves approximately 275 seventh and eighth grade students under the leadership of Ms. Yuliya Hall. Ms. Hall was once a teacher under the direction of Principal Gonchar and we are blessed to have been a part of advancing her to her current leadership role. At COA Middle School we offer students daily Russian instruction and employ bilingual staff to help support our parents and students. The middle school is also included in the 845 state Academic Performance Index score which was reported above for the elementary school. At COA Middle school we encourage high academic outcomes, have an active student leadership program, have implemented the middle school component of a pre-engineering program called Project Lead the Way, encourage strong parental and community involvement, and offer Russian Drama class as an elective.

Under the guidance of Ms. Hall we have incorporated community volunteers in the implementation of a Junior Achievement program for the first time this year. Each spring COA Middle School boys and COA Middle School girls, respectively, compete in a GCC wide basketball completion which is very popular with students, parents and the community. Principal Hall is excited to be expanding the Russian book collection in the COA Middle School library and to be organizing culturally relevant school/community events such as the recent International Women’s Day celebration.

Futures High School has been successfully progressing under the steady leadership of Principal Nataliya Burko for the past 4 years. Futures is a small 9th – 12th grade program serving over 300 primarily Slavic students in the North Highlands area. The school has a strong emphasis on students’ www.RussianAmericanMedia.com

academic and career preparedness.

All teachers are committed to provide each student with high quality instruction addressing students with different needs. The school has a high percentage of English learners and provides them with a variety of supports and has demonstrated a track record of success. Futures maintains an Academic Performance Index over 800 and in 2012 was awarded the US News and Report Silver Medal ranking for USA high schools (1,939 out of 20,000 schools). Under the leadership of Ms. Burko, the school offers a variety of Honors and Advanced Placement courses as well as a variety of electives (art, choir, drama, business math, medical terminology, psychology and ceramics). Futures High School is also one of the few schools in our area to be a certified Project Lead the Way school which is a huge accomplishment.

The school has developed a character education, daily advisory classes, a variety of student clubs, a partnership with the Civil Air Patrol and a strong student leadership program. Principal Burko has instituted an annual Point Break Workshop to support a positive culture of respect and discourage bullying. To round out the small school comprehensive environment, Futures High School has an athletic program that includes basketball, soccer, volleyball and swimming.

Principal Joi Tikoi is the principal of Community Collaborative Charter School (SPICA). SPICA stands for Students Participating in Challenging Academics. Ms Joi is the principal over two K – 8th grade sites, one at Winterstein (over 300 students) and one in West Sacramento (just over 200 students). The SPICA sites predominantly serve the Slavic community, have small class sizes, friendly teachers and staff, a familylike atmosphere and encourage parent and community involvement. At SPICA, Ms. Joi has ensured that each campus has bilingual staff, strong student support systems, Russian (and Spanish) language instruction, free after school programs, healthy lunch programs, and quality curriculum with high expectations. On Fridays at Winterstein this spring the school and staff host a preschool program to support our students and families to transition comfortably to the kindergarten experience in the fall.

Currently SPICA middle school students are competing in the basketball league

with other GCC schools. In the fall the school provided a similar competition experience in soccer. This year Principal Tikoi and GCC staff wrote a new charter and the Winterstein site will become its own charter school named Gateway International School in the fall of 2013. The GCC is excited to implement a new school with the prestigious academic approach of IB (International Baccalaureate). SPICA at West Sacramento will continue to offer its current quality program and instruction with future plans for it to become its own charter school as well.

Gateway Community Charters believes that students are best served – grow and prosper – in a variety of different ways. Our various schools and programs creatively combine a number of different school options and settings: We have fully classroom based schools, blended online hybrids, programs offering class 2 – 4 days a week with the remainder of learning happening at home and more. Curriculum and methodology at our various schools and sites varies considerably as well.

The four schools outlined in this article continue to grow in numbers, excellence and reputation. The GCC and the incredible principals and teaching staff partner with the parents and community to ensure that each of these schools serves our students with excellence. Despite the state budget cuts and uncertainty over the last four years, each of these schools has continued to grow and expand without loss of staff or services. This summer will once again see many facilities; playground and other enhancements take place for each school.

As the Superintendent of Gateway Community Charters, daily I am awed by the excellent work of these schools.

I am humbled by the hard work and dedication of Principals Gonchar, Hall, Burko and Tikoi. Their goals and aspirations reflect the commitment and philosophy that all kids can learn if given the supports necessary to do so. They have a vision and a sense of purpose and urgency to create every opportunity for their students to attain the excellent educational prospects necessary to fulfill their dreams. Together – the GCC, the school leaders… and you, the parents and community – we are an unbeatable to team to ensure our students ultimate success. ounder and Director of Top Talent Today, Linda Norris may have just the answer! Linda brings years of experience in the entertainment industry as both a professional performer and savvy business owner. She is one of Northern California’s top talent scouts and entertainment specialists with an extensive “top-notch” talent directory ranging throughout California, Reno and Las Vegas. Linda has a strong passion for people and the performing arts. Quite simply, when it comes to show business, Linda is your entertainment expert!

Among her many credits, Linda has provided entertainment for Arnold Schwarzenegger and other government officials plus performed with Lionel Ritchie in the closing 1986 Olympic Ceremonies in Los Angeles. She was also a television co-host for the program “Survival in Times Today” and has performed on tour and in Japan with the Dynamic Deanne Dance Troupe. She has taught dance to all ages and has choreographed productions professionally throughout her career.

Linda was also a featured entertainer for Royal Vikings Cruise Lines singing and dancing her way around the world! Within a year, she was promoted to Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines International as Assistant Cruise Director where she served and sailed for over ten years.

Linda is now docked in Rocklin, California and is ready to accommodate your entertainment needs.
