Feeling Lucky Have you ever searched for a four-leaf clover? They are actually pretty rare. One in 10,000 clovers has four leaves. But if you’re lucky enough to find a four-leaf clover, look for more! If a clover plant produces a four-leaf clover, it’s more likely to produce another. This month, we are lucky enough to bring you exceptional fun! Be sure to check out our recipe for frog muffins. (They are GREEN!) Our STEAM craft features a rainbow of many colors. We know you have lots of energy to burn off, so be sure to learn how play counts as exercise! You know what else is green? Money! You can design your own dollar bill this month. The library is celebrating Women’s History Month along with Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Stop by your local branch to have fun! Good Luck!

HEALTHY BITES WITH TGMC | BY JAMIE KING RD, LDN AND BAILEY LEE RD, LDN

EAT YOUR GREENS! FROG MUFFINS

INGREDIENTS • 18 standard cupcake liners • 2 cups flour, whole wheat • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup butter, unsalted • 3/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup honey • 1 large banana • 6 ounces raw baby spinach (by weight) • 1 large egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 Preheat oven to 350 F, and line a muffin pan with paper liners (or use silicone muffin cups sprayed with cooking spray).

Spring is right around the corner! This is a great time to introduce some fresh foods into your child’s day! Many kids turn the other way when they hear the word “spinach”, but there are so many health benefits of incorporating these dark leafy greens into your child’s diet! “The USDA’s MyPlate specifically recommends adults and children over 9 years old eat one and a half to two cups of dark green vegetables per week.” One portion is equivalent to 1/2 cup cooked or 1 cup of raw spinach. Spinach is loaded with so many essential nutrients, including Vitamins A, C, and K, folate, iron, magnesium, and potassium. How do we get our children to enjoy this delicious superfood? The more we can involve children in food preparation, the more likely they are to try new foods. For example, create a small box garden, where children can grow their own spinach. Let them search for and help prepare tasty recipes that include spinach. When grocery shopping, have children pick out a new vegetable to try each week. Although we don’t always recommend “hiding” vegetables in recipes, it is okay to sometimes add spinach to recipes, such as sauces, soups, or desserts. Just puree the spinach and add it to the recipe; the flavor of spinach is so mild that your family won’t even notice it’s there! Lastly, don’t force children to eat specific vegetables. Continue to offer them daily, and eventually your child will grow to love vegetables. Vegetables are nutrient-packed and delicious; let’s encourage our children to enjoy them! FAMILY FIRST

STEP 2 Combine all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. STEP 3 Heat the butter until just melted. Using a blender or food processor, blend the raw spinach, banana, honey, milk, egg, vanilla, and melted butter until completely pureed. STEP 4 Pour the puree into the dry ingredient bowl, and fold together gently until just combined. (Do not over-mix.) STEP 5 Spoon the batter into the muffin pan, and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the muffins are firm to the touch on top, but not quite browning. STEP 6 Cool before serving.

SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

WHY IS OUR MONEY GREEN? The month of March always has me seeing lots of green. Green grass starts to grow as spring nears, and green clovers decorate homes and businesses in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Of course, my favorite green thing is money! Because of its color, money is sometimes referred to as “greenbacks” or just “green.” But, have you ever wondered why our money is green? When U.S. paper money was introduced in 1861, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing opted to use green ink because the color was resistant to chemical and physical changes making the bills harder to counterfeit or fake. The government continued to use the green ink even when bills were redesigned because the ink was plentiful and durable. Each day, the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing uses more than 9 tons (or 19,000 pounds) of ink to print approximately 26 million bills. Those bills are worth approximately $974 million. That’s a lot of green!

DESIGNING MONEY

Before any money was printed, banknote designers working for the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing had to develop the overall look, layout, and artistic details of each bill. If you were given the job to redesign the $1 bill, what would it look like? Design your bill using the template below.

S.T.E.A.M. ACTIVITY WITH HOUMA FAMILY DENTAL

RAINBOW MAGIC This March, create your own rainbow of flavors just in time for St. Patrick’s Day! Try this fun and educational project with things that you already have on hand. Instead of eating those sugary candies, let’s use them to create! You can get creative by making patterns, images or shapes, but either way the science lesson is the same. Each color of candy has a slightly different chemical makeup that when dissolved creates a solution with slightly different properties. The chemicals create a barrier preventing the solutions from mixing, much like saltwater and freshwater. The mesmerizing results as the colors dissolve and travel based on your unique design and color choices are endless. Gather that candy and get to work creating art and science!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Candy such as Skittles or M&M’s • Warm water • Pitcher • White plate or pie dish

WHAT TO DO: STEP 1 Arrange your candy on the plate or pie dish in a pattern, image or shape. STEP 2 Fill the pitcher with warm water and pour gently, ensuring water is touching the base of the candy. Do not submerge candy entirely. STEP 3 The color on the candies will immediately begin to dissolve and move. Continue to watch the water change and the colors run for up to 10 minutes, depending on the scale of your pattern or image. STEP 4 Do it again! Each time will yield a new result and pattern! TIP: If you do happen to snack on a candy, brush your teeth immediately after!

GET MOVING WITH THIBODAUX REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM

PLAY AS EXERCISE! Exercise is often something we think of as an adult endeavor, something we do with friends at the local fitness center. However, spending time with family is a great motivation to get fit, and enjoy each other’s company as you all work toward your fitness goals. You don’t have to leave the house to get some workout time in. The key is to make it fun and to keep moving, which can burn calories and strengthen bonds. Here are six ways to exercise with the kids involved. 1. Create an Indoor Dance Floor Moving aside the furniture in the living room, and cranking on some high-energy dance music can set the mood! Want to mimic a real dance floor? Letting your children use a flashlight as “strobe light,” is a fun and inexpensive way to do so. You can tune into music that your younger ones know the words to, so they can sign along as they dance. There’s no chance of outsiders judging your moves, and you can go freestyle or take a break and watch your youngest ones boogie the day away. 2. Make your Own Fitness Video Your kids already love watching television and watching their peers on youtube, so why not use that to encourage them to be active? Grab a smartphone and let your kids create an exercise routine. No need to share online, but rather save for family memories! Children grow up fast! You can let them be silly, the key is that they’re being active and getting their heart pumping. If you have video editing skills, you can edit in upbeat music (or play some while you’re recording the video). Your kids will want to watch it to see their own performance, and it could spark them to keep it going. Make it a series! 3. Make Chores Fun Let’s all benefit from exercise while getting our house cleaned (win-win!). The trick is to get your kids motivated to want to take on mundane chores in the first place. The key is to make them fun. Turn chores into a competition (when you have more than one child), and even do a play-byplay announcer voice of their progress whether it’s washing dishes or putting away toys. Skip on monetary prizes, rather give praise or let them pick a family movie to enjoy!

4. Jump Whether you skip to your own beat or chant a classic jump rope rhyme, jumping rope is a great calorie-burner and a popular childhood activity. Chances are your kids already have jumping ropes, so why not jump with them? If you don’t already have your own, they’re quite inexpensive to buy and available at most sporting good retailers. Did you know that jumping rope has been proven to burn more calories compared to running? It also improves coordination, agility, balance, and footwork. There’s a reason why professional athletes jump rope as part of their training. So grab your rope and start hoping!

FAMILY FIRST

16

MARCH 2020

5. Go to a Park The weather is turning warmer. There’s not many more simpler pleasures than heading to a big open green space to kick the ball around, play catch or chase your kids around (or have them chase you). You’ll get fresh air, and know that your kids are safe in your company. Being outside will help your children appreciate nature, and you won’t have worry about accidentally knocking over furniture.

6. Create an ‘Exercise Hunt’ Let’s “Hide and Sweat”! Write down 20 different fitness activities (10 push-ups, 10 jumping jacks for example) on 20 pieces of paper and put each one in a plastic egg. You can then hide the eggs as if it was an Easter egg hunt, and have the kids search them out. When they find one, the entire family performs the activity, not just the children. Putting a time limit on finding the eggs and doing the activities can add to the challenge.

SPONSORED BY

As parents, it is our job to encourage our children to be active. Not only will exercise help them burn excess energy and sleep well, making fitness a part of your child’s life will encourage healthy habits as they grow older. So why sit on the park bench as a spectator while they have all the fun? When exercise feels like play, the whole family can have fun together!
