PEOPLE’S CHOICE 2025
Locals know locals best! So why not rely on locals to voice their point of view and tell us your favorites! We are the ones who live here and shop at the businesses, utilize local services, and attend local events.
For a third year in a row, we asked the public what the People’s Choice was for your favorite local businesses, local hot spots, local restaurants and so much more! The Point of Vue People’s Choice 2025 contest places the voice of the people first! In over 140 categories, we asked you to share your favorites throughout Terrebonne and Lafourche.
Through open online voting, we asked our community to share their “Point of Vue” by taking part in the People’s Choice process. Nominations took place from April 1 - April 30, 2025 and voting took place from May 19 - 31, 2025. You could only vote once per email address during the two week period. One vote per person is good enough to elect a president; it’s good enough for us to select a favorite! We took a close look at what our goal was in holding a contest that would take up so much of our team’s time. Would it be worth it? For us, the answer was yes. We realized what the one big goal was this issue - to be able to share as many local businesses as possible with our readers! Where else can you find an outstanding list of so many local businesses all in one place?! Our hope for this contest truly is to bring dollars into the doors of small businesses in our community. Maybe you will see a business in a certain category that you may not have heard of before and stop by to see why they
were nominated or even won! Maybe you will be reminded of a business you haven’t been into in a while, and stop by to see what’s new! Whatever your reason, we hope to remind our community of the importance of shopping and doing business with other local businesses.
The results listed in this issue are listed in place order. While we allowed up to five options in each category, if five businesses were not nominated, we just rolled with it! A few of our categories have six due to ties. You will notice special ribbons for repeat winners, new categories and also for close races! Quite a few came down to only a few votes!!
As a small business ourselves, we do not ask you to buy tickets to a banquet to drag out the contest or require our winners to purchase anything else to discover the contest results. All winners are contacted prior to publishing and provided with a free media kit to help them announce their win on social media, or to print for their business. Our true goal is to hopefully shine a light on a business you might not be familiar with and perhaps help drive small business growth.
This special issue is no small feat for our staff. Hours upon hours went into crunching data, contacting nominees and then the winners! And we do have limited space for ads when it comes to our print issue! We hope everyone is able to thank our voters and readers for their support.
Overall, this contest is always a wonderful experience for our team here at Point of Vue. We LOVE putting together this issue that represents the best of our community. We enjoy seeing the coming together of local businesses to support one another. Our hearts were warmed by how many of you took the time to share another business’s social media post letting you know they fit into a certain category, or that they were nominated! Without the help of our amazing community, this contest would not be successful.
Thank you for supporting the People’s Choice. We hope you check out the businesses listed in this issue and support them! POV
Who was your favorite teacher growing up, and what made them memorable?
MICHAELA
My favorite teacher was my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Katie Duthu. She was always so fun to be in a class with and she would always make our lessons into fun things instead of just writing down notes and flashcards. She was most memorable in a way that no teacher in my life ever was, she always taught me to be the best I can be and that I was meant to stand out and I thank her for who I am today.
KAITLYN
My favorite teacher would have to be my music teacher, Mr. Meco Carlos. He has been teaching me since 5th grade, and if it wasn’t for him I would’ve never discovered the thing that brings me so much joy. His love, patience, and support has truly inspired me to be the best I can and no other teacher can ever replace him.
EVAN
My favorite teacher growing up was Mr. Christopher Dehart. I went to CCA from 4th to 12th grade and was able to be taught by him from 8th grade to senior year, and he was so encouraging. He really treated us like individuals capable of making our own decisions. He encouraged me to pursue an English degree, would loan me books, and always took an interest in his students as people, eager to hear whatever weird dream I had the night before and giving me kudos for cutting my own bangs! He passed away in April 2024, far too young, but I’ll always remember him! I still have a document he shared with my graduating class about Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You!”
BRIANNA
There are so many teachers that come to mind when choosing a favorite. They each share a passion for teaching and a desire to personally connect with their students. The teacher that comes to mind for me is Mrs. Courtney Cenac (formerly Thibodaux). She was memorable because she went above and beyond in the classroom and out. She had a way of teaching AP U.S. History that made you interested and excited to be in class. Although, the main reason she was so memorable was because she connected with us personally. She would offer life advice, offer tips on how to prepare for college, help you grow as a person and student, and she was always there to listen if we needed someone to talk to.
CENTURY-OLD GEM GETS A NEW CHAPTER
BY MARY DOWNER DITCH | PHOTOS MISTY LEIGH MCELROY
When Amy and Leslie Bundy purchased the home in April 2023, they weren’t just buying a house – they were breathing new life into a piece of local history. Originally built in 1902 on Verret Street, this beautiful home was relocated to its current address on Suthon Avenue in 1966. With over a century of memories in its bones, the house needed thoughtful restoration and a whole lot of love.
“It’s always been my dream to renovate a historic house,” Amy shared. “The whole process was amazing. My husband and I never felt like we were working. We’d just say, ‘We’re going play’ when it was time to head over for a new project.”
Their passion is evident in every inch of the 2,600-square-foot space. Before they could even begin personalizing it, the Bundys tackled major repairs. The home hadn’t been painted in over 40 years, and
Hurricane Ida had left its mark. Water damage required the replacement of nearly all the ceilings, and sheetrock was used extensively throughout. Perhaps the most daunting project was in the kitchen, which had sunk nearly a foot. It had to be carefully jacked up, and a wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed to create a more open, welcoming flow.
Despite the challenges, the result is nothing short of breathtaking. The home’s original wood floors were lovingly preserved, adding warmth and authenticity to every room. Two fireplaces add a sense of history and charm, while a rounded front porch stands as Amy’s favorite spot in the house. “That porch is what sold me,” she admits. “It’s where I go to slow down and take it all in.”
Inside, the heart of the home is the grand foyer. With its whimsical wallpaper and
bold, joyful colors, it reflects the Bundys' playful approach to design. “The foyer is the glue to this home,” Amy says. “I couldn’t help but have fun with it.”
The home features four spacious bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and a powder room, all touched with what Amy describes as “eclectic décor full of character.” There’s a hint of New Orleans in the architecture and spirit with a historic soul paired with an artist’s flair.
From jacking up a kitchen to layering in bold wallpaper, the Bundys have done more than restore a house—they’ve created a home that honors the past while joyfully embracing the present. “We call the home ‘Suthon Livin,’” Amy shared. Anyone who steps inside can truly feel the southern hospitably running throughout the unique property. "Suthon Livin" can currently be booked through Air BnB. POV

THE CHOLESTEROL BATTLE: WHAT'S HIGH, WHAT'S LOW, WHAT'S NORMAL
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some 86 million people have cholesterol levels exceeding 200 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). As there are few symptoms, most people are unaware of high levels.
Cholesterol and its role
The liver produces cholesterol, which the body needs to make hormones and digest fatty foods. Low-density (LDL) and highdensity (HDL) lipoproteins—carry cholesterol through blood vessels. The body produces all that it needs. But, things get complicated with dietary cholesterol found primarily in red meat and dairy products.
Dietary cholesterol has good and bad versions. Saturated fats from animal products and trans fats can contribute to high cholesterol. Foods low in saturated fats—seafood, fish, lean meats, low-fat dairy—and high-fiber foods help manage cholesterol.
Optimum cholesterol ranges
A simple blood test (lipid panel) checks cholesterol.
• Total cholesterol: about 150 mg/dL; >200 is high
• Low-density lipoprotein (LDL—the bad): normal value <100 mg/DL
• Triglycerides: <150 mg/dL; fat needed for energy and carried by lipoproteins
High cholesterol risks
High cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease and heart attacks. People with high LDL also have a greater risk of developing carotid artery disease (CAD), which can lead to strokes.
Risk factors for high cholesterol
• Age
• Gender (men tend to have higher cholesterol levels than women)
• Family history
• Diet
• Being overweight
• Physical inactivity
• Smoking
• Excessive alcohol
Managing cholesterol
Lifestyle changes can help reduce cholesterol levels naturally, as well as boost the effectiveness of statins or other cholesterol-
lowering medications. Have your cholesterol checked every 4 to 6 years.
• Eat heart-healthy foods. Follow fiber-rich, plant-based eating plans. Eliminate fried and processed foods. Increase fruits, vegetables, oats and beans. Substitute egg whites for whole eggs.
• Get moving. Physical activity can reduce LDL and increase HDL levels. The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise weekly.
• Lose weight.
• Quit smoking.
• Limit alcohol to one drink daily for women, two drinks for men.
• Calm down. Research shows that stress increases cortisol levels, which can raise cholesterol. Take a few minutes in the morning to practice mindfulness or quietly sip a cup of tea or coffee. Avoid doom scrolling.
