Happy New Year! 2020. Whoa. Crazy to think another year, and most notably, another decade has passed us by. We celebrate a decade every 10 years. Do you remember what you were doing 10 years ago? For some of our younger readers, you might not even have been born yet! It’s fun at the beginning of every year to set a goal for yourself. Some people call them New Year resolutions. They can range from “I want to learn how to ride a bike” to “I will include a vegetable with at least two of my meals.” What do you want to accomplish this year? Dream big my friends!

HEALTHY BITES WITH TGMC | BY LAUREN BERNARD, DIETETIC INTERN AND MICHELLE BRICENO, MS, RD, LDN

CITRUS FRUITS

SIMPLE CITRUS SMOOTHIE What are citrus fruits? The citrus family includes oranges, mandarins, grapefruit, lemons, limes, clementine, and tangerines. These fruits are delicious and have many great health benefits. Did you know that one large orange helps you meet your daily needs for Vitamin C? Vitamin C helps boost your immune system and helps keep your skin, bones and teeth healthy. They are low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber to help keep us healthy and full. Citrus fruits are a great way to add flavor and color to our food. Toss citrus fruits into a fruit salad or add them to your green salad for a sweet twist. Squeeze lemon, lime or orange juice onto chicken, fish, or beef for extra flavor. Freeze orange juice into frozen juice bars, add juice to your favorite fruit smoothie, or simply pack a mandarin in your school lunch bag for a grab-and-go snack.

INGREDIENTS • 1 orange, peeled • 1/4 lemon, peeled • 1/2 cup fresh pineapple chunks • 1/4 cup frozen mango chunks • 1/4 cup plain, non-fat Greek yogurt • 1 cup ice cubes

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 Place all ingredients into a blender. STEP 2 Blend until smooth. STEP 3 Enjoy! Serving Size: 8 oz Recipe makes 2 servings

KID ENERGY ALL-STARS

ALL-STAR OF THE MONTH BRAI-LYNN BOUDREAUX SOFTBALL • AFTERSHOCK TRAVEL SOFTBALL

When did you start playing softball? When I was about 9 years old Why did you decide to give softball a try? I tried dancing, soccer and cheer for a while. But then I tried softball and now I am hooked on the game. How often do you practice? With my team, I practice two days a week and have pitching lessons once a week, but I am always batting or throwing the ball at home. Our tournaments are on the weekends; I played at least seven tournaments this fall. What position(s) do you play? I play shortstop, left and center field, third base and I pitch. But my favorite is shortstop. What have you learned about teamwork? You have to work together. You win as a team and you lose as a team. Last year we lost a lot, but this year we took home six silver rings (2nd place) and two gold championship rings. How do your teammates make practice fun? Just being around my teammates is fun! I have made friends with my teammates and we cheer each other on and push each other to do our best.

FAMILY FIRST

10

JANUARY 2020

What is the best part of playing ball? Just playing the game! I love softball and I am in competition with myself. What is one thing you do after a tournament? Sleep on the way home What do you do to calm any butterflies before batting? I used to be nervous, but now I just get up to the plate and hit the ball. Who is your favorite sports hero? A.J. Andrews, the first woman to win the MVP Golden Glove Award. What are you looking forward to doing next in your sport? I want to play for LSU. Do you play any other sports? Currently just softball; that is where my heart is.

ALL-STAR ADVICE Whether you are pitching or fielding, make firm eye contact with where you throw the ball.

TIP FROM BERNIE & EARL Remember, do not remove the colored flags placed in the ground by workers. They are in the ground to let the public know there are underground pipes or wires and to dig with care. Nominate your child to be a Kid Energy All-Star by emailing rhett@kidenergyusa.com. SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

ALL ABOUT THE DOLLAR BILL Hi friends! I’m sure you have all seen a $1 bill, but have you ever wondered what all the symbols on the bill mean? The back side of the $1 bill features both sides of the Great Seal of the United States. One side has a pyramid representing strength and duration of our nation. If you look closely, you’ll see letters on the bottom of the pyramid. This is the Roman numeral for 1776, the year the U.S. declared its independence. The eye floating above is known as the Eye of Providence. The seal’s other side features an eagle holding an olive branch in one claw, symbolizing peace, and 13 arrows in the other, symbolizing war and the 13 original states. The ribbon contains the Latin phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” meaning “out of many, one.” This refers to the many states becoming one nation. The front of the $1 bill has lots of numbers and letters that may seem random, but they all tell you something about the bill.

This tells us which plate was used to print the bill and its position on the plate.

This tells us which Federal Reserve Bank is responsible for

printing the bill.

This is the bill’s serial number. The letter at the end tells us how many times this particular number has been used.

This is the year the bill’s design was first printed, not the year the actual bill was printed.

S.T.E.A.M. ACTIVITY WITH HOUMA FAMILY DENTAL

POPSICLE STICK CATAPULT

For as simple as this craft is to create, there is a whole world of STEAM to explore! We use science when testing how far items might fly. Technology is used to help assist us in building. Engineering is what actually builds the catapult. We utilize art when custom decorating the project. Math skills are needed to determine the supplies needed as we build.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • 10 Jumbo popsicle sticks • 3 rubber bands • sticky dots

Have your children form a hypothesis and guess how far different items will fly when catapulted. Test each item and record your results! You can adjust where the arms rest or how many sticks you use to further the experiment as well.

• scissors • bottle cap • items to launch (pompoms, pencil erasers, marshmallows, coins)

Call today to schedule your appointment at our new location at the corner of HWY 311 & Polk St.

WHAT TO DO: STEP 1 Count out eight popsicle sticks and stack them on top of one another. Wrap a rubber band around each end to secure them.

985-868-5699

STEP 2 Very carefully, with adult supervision, cut two tiny V-shaped notches about an inch from the end of the remaining two popsicle sticks. Make sure they are in the same place on both sticks. This will help your rubber band to stay in place.

From your first tooth... to your last.

H F

D

STEP 3 Take one of the notched sticks and slide it in under the top stick on your bound stack. STEP 4 Flip your stack over so that stick is on the bottom. Lay the last stick on top of the entire stack, matching up the notches. STEP 5 Wrap a rubber band in the notches to attach the catapult arm. STEP 6 Affix a glue dot to the drink cap. Attach the drink cap to the top of the arm. STEP 7 Ready to launch!

GET MOVING WITH THIBODAUX REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM

LET’S GET ACTIVE When school is in session staying active as a family may feel like a challenge. Unless your child is naturally drawn to after-school sports, it is easy for physical health to go out the window—especially when kids are buried under a mountain of homework, studying for tests, and distracted by their electronic devices.

Thankfully, there are plenty of creative ways for kids to get moving once the school bell rings, especially when the weather is a little warmer. We spoke with three moms to learn their unique parenting techniques that add fun activities to the family planner.

Take group walks. Get your family into the habit of taking walks in the neighborhood after dinner. Not only will kids get some fresh air and exercise, but it’s a great opportunity to bond! Get into the competitive spirit. There’s nothing like a little competition to stoke a kid’s motivation to get off the couch. If everyone has an activity tracker like a Fitbit, you can give little rewards for the best step count! Go on nature hikes around the neighborhood and back yard! Hikes may not get your heart pumping as much as soccer practice, but they’re a great opportunity to sneak in some physical activity while bird watching or looking for collectibles to use for craft projects. Take advantage of indoor play spaces. So many of these physical activities require the cooperation of the weather. But what if it’s too windy, dark, or rainy to run around outside? There are lots of indoor play spaces popping up all over the place, bounce houses, indoor trampoline parks, and even the Thibodaux Regional Fitness Center provides membership for teens 12-15 with the supervision of a parent member!

FAMILY FIRST

16

JANUARY 2020

Encourage “old-school” games from your childhood. Do you remember when you used to play games of pick-up basketball with the neighbors? There’s no reason why you can’t pass your childhood games onto the next generation. Try four-square, hopscotch, or jump rope. Parents: get out your old jump rope and you can join in too! Take the stairs. Encourage the whole family to ditch the elevators and escalators for stairs, make a game out of it with stair races if you live in an apartment building. Put on a YouTube tutorial. Yes, that thing that often keeps them from any physical activity can also be a source of great (and free) exercise for all different ages! Check out kidfriendly exercise tutorial videos on YouTube.

For more information contact the Thibodaux Regional Fitness Center, 985.493.4950.

Organize play dates around physical activities. Make exercise a social activity! The same kid that has zero interest in running or taking a walk with mom or dad will jump up and down to do an ice cube relay race or a three-legged race with friends.
