4 FOR 2024 Insight into how run specialty retailers and brands can take advantage of opportunities in a changing retail world.

T

he footwear market in the U.S. has been challenged this year — and even more so than was expected when we turned the calendar page to January, 2023. Continuing inflation, depleting savings, rising debt and the reduction of government assistance programs have all coalesced to put pressure on demand and have forced consumers to prioritize their spending. As a result of these factors, adult footwear units sold are down three percent this year, through September, adding to the six percent decline the market experienced in calendar year 2022. Sales revenue, however, continues to grow, up two percent so far this year 6

runninginsight.com

compared to 2022, due to the average price increases we’ve seen since the onset of the pandemic. The good news is that the adult running category is outperforming the total footwear market in 2023, growing in both units sold and dollar sales year-todate. Furthermore, Circana’s Future of Footwear findings indicate that running is expected to continue to outperform the market in the fourth quarter of 2023 and in 2024, despite the economic challenges mentioned above. Bottom line: The running category is poised to continue to gain share and there are four strategies that brands and retailers should consider to make this a reality.

1. Maximize the peaks and valleys The holiday season has been stretched, now starting in October with major retailer promotions that are meant to entice consumers to jump start their shopping and spend early. But there are many weeks between the beginning of October and the last week of December, which will be especially important this year since Christmas Day falls on a Monday, leaving an extra weekend for the lastminute rush. So as we all attend The Running Event in Austin this month there is still plenty of holiday season left to go. While product development and retailer buys have long been put to rest, there is still time to impact merchandising and

2. Embrace the everyday warriors As I wrote back in May in Running Insight, while I do not want to diminish the performance aspect of the running business, we cannot afford to dismiss the impact of the casual consumer. According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), running participation 8

runninginsight.com

rates increased just slightly in 2020, during the peak pandemic period, but reverted back down, below 2019 levels, by 2021 and again in 2022. To sustain growth, the industry must rely on the everyday wearers who are looking for the fashion, comfort and versatility that a running shoe provides. Innovation remains crucial for the serious runner and it is also necessary to attract the casual customer. Think of it this way: Life keeps us on our toes and we are all running somewhere. 3. Tap into consumer priorities According to Circana’s Future of Footwear study, comfort features, easy-on/easy off, breathability and versatility are the most important features for consumers when deciding what footwear to buy. Product development and messaging related to these attributes is a must, but the real impact is when you focus on the benefits

4. Hone your social media approach Let’s face it: the way consumers shop continues to evolve. Online purchases now represent over 40 percent of running footwear sales, compared to about 30 percent in 2019. Circana’s latest Future of Footwear survey revealed that almost 60 percent of consumers use social media to learn about or discover footwear brands and retailers. For Gen Z this figure is 80 percent and for Millennials it’s just over 70 percent. Therefore, it is no surprise that platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube continue to hone their direct shopping capabilities. But the influence of social media also extends to in-store shopping and consumers tell us that posts from brands and retailers are the most impactful. We need to think about social media as another sales

As we approach the 2023 finish line and power through these last few weeks, players in the running industry can feel good about reaching this point and what they have accomplished this year.

and communication tool for our brands and stores, one that will continue to grow in importance. But it’s not a one-size for all scenario, so in order for it to pay off retailers need to craft a strategy that carefully considers their target consumer and where they are spending their digital time. The Finish Line As we approach the 2023 finish line and power through these last few weeks, players in the running industry can feel good about reaching this point and what they have accomplished this year. In setting their new year goals, the industry can consider some of the strategies laid out above to keep up the pace of growth in 2024. n About the author Beth Goldstein is an executive director and industry analyst at Circana (formerly NPD) covering the footwear and accessories markets. With expertise based on more than 20 years of retail and market research experience, she provides data-driven insights and guidance for brands, manufacturers, and retailers within these businesses, including state of the industry presentations. beth.goldstein@circana.com

marketing decisions. One way is to understand when the peak purchasing periods take place for the category. Running footwear sales tend to be evenly distributed throughout November and December. Athleisure, as a key gifting category, peaks late, and given the increased blurring between running performance and athleisure, running brands and retailers should be making a big push to capture last-minute holiday sales. Running isn’t typically a category that gets a lot of buzz during the holiday season, but this year it will likely stand out.

by connecting the dots between the features and consumers’ lifestyles. One example is travel, which has had a very strong recovery after being very hard hit by the pandemic. Transportation Security Administration data shows that screened passengers in the U.S. are now hovering slightly above 2019 levels — and based on the U.S. Travel Association’s estimates, road trips are on the rise as well. So, how do your products help your consumer’s travel experience, whether that travel is for a race or just to explore? If you can make that connection, the decision to buy becomes much easier to make.

How to maximize the TRE23 experience in education, networking and products. / By Danny Smith

F

or Toni Reese, co-owner of Running Lab in Brighton, MI, and so many other running store leaders, The Running Event is much more than a trade show. It’s a place to connect with peers, see the latest products, discover market trends and celebrate running culture among other fanatics. But amid all that wonder, TRE can also be tremendously overwhelming – a word many use to describe the most important and interesting three days on the run specialty

Toni Reese Running Lab, Brighton, MI Before attending it is essential to reflect on your business needs. I usually make a ‘Greatest Wish List’ of knowledge and products I hope to gain from the event. Then I research the speakers at the educational sessions and brands attending the expo before making appointments with the brands I would like to conduct business with. Going in without preparation can be insanely overwhelming and this advance planning will help you gain more for your business than showing up without a plan. 10

calendar each year. A flurry of movement and energy, new products, brands and conversation can easily consume and, while the euphoria of the event is wonderful, any retailer attending TRE23 should certainly want to make the most of the experience – and the investment – to bolster their business. Here we connect with a few seasoned TRE attendees who graciously shared their tips for maximizing the trip to Austin.

Ellen Brenner Fleet Feet, Rochester, NY I’ve started Day One of the expo the same way for years. I start at aisle one and walk up and down every aisle. I don’t see anyone in particular. I decompress and take stock of who’s there. That helps me frame where I want to go from there. It allows me to be much more regimented and organized when I’m on the expo floor and prevent getting swept up in the expo’s energy. Then, I can determine the booths I need to visit.

Bruce Haines Aardvark Sports Shop, Bethlehem, PA Make sure you allow for enough time to walk the show floor with an open mind about new product opportunities. Every year, we pick up one or two things that work well for us and they are often things we just stumble upon. Oofos sandals, Caterpy laces and Shokz headphones are good examples of product we found just wandering around the show.

John Rogers Fleet Feet Maine Running, Portland, ME

Keri Straughn Palmetto Running Company, Bluffton, SC

This will be my sixth TRE and I’ve done the same thing just about every year before taking off: I pull reports of every vendor I want to see. Part of this is giving me easy access to numbers when I’m meeting with vendors at the event. It also shows our partners we take our relationship with them seriously. First and foremost, though, having these numbers on hand helps to facilitate data-driven decision making when I place any orders.

Attend the educational breakouts regarding operational, market trends and networking with other stores to acquire and foster best practices for your business. At the expo, be prepared to meet with the brands that you have issues or opportunities with.

Tip No. 1: Reach out to new brands in advance to schedule an appointment. By doing this you’ll be able to plan your week out in advance and not feel rushed trying to make time to see everything.

You want to leave room for excitement, but it’s so important to have a quick state of the union on all those numbers, so you’re not overcommitting to one brand and ordering beyond your means.

12

runninginsight.com

Additionally, look for newer, emerging brands you may not have been exposed to, but might offer differentiation regarding products for your stores by pre-planning what categories you are interested in looking for new products to freshen up merchandise in your store.

Tip No. 2: Tuesday (TRE Education Day) is my favorite day, so don’t miss it! Get a chance to network and learn from the best in the industry. Split your team up to make sure you get to attend as many seminars as possible and don’t forget to bring a notebook. Share notes with each other over dinner that night.

Then, plan on setting some time aside to go to the categories you are interested in looking for new products and review at the expo.

Jennifer Henderson Running Niche, St. Louis, MO One of the best parts of the show is interacting with other retailers. Try to sit with people at lunch and introduce yourself to other owners. Be willing to share some of your store secrets and ask them to share theirs. Ask people about their best sellers, about operations, staffing and vendor relationships — anything you want to improve. Also, ask them if they saw anything new at the show that intrigues them. Make as many connections as possible with other store owners and managers. These people can help you all through the year as challenges arise.

If you attend a panel or educational session you like, reach out to that person you connected with. Find them on social media, email or in-person at TRE.

We go to The Running Event with our customers top-of-mind because that’s who we need to ultimately cater to and service. So we’re spending time with the vendors who match what our customers want, particularly those who offer products impacting customers’ health and fitness beyond the run, because our store doesn’t just limit itself to running. We know the areas we’ve got well covered, so it’s about what’s next.

Don’t be afraid to ask to sit down for a coffee. The real benefit is human connection. The other is tethering yourself … to an industry journeyman or woman makes available the untapped resource of experience. I’ve learned that if I connect with a resource on one topic, we generally have more things we can connect on and expand together.

Having our customers at the forefront of our time at TRE keeps us focused and helps us create the right mix of items in our store to appeal to our customers and their needs.

ONE MORE THING ...

Age In, Not Out

A page of unsolicited wisdom for TRE23 attendees after two decades in specialty run. / By Tom Griffen

A

Still Learning, Still Earning Though I look back on 20 years and can hardly believe so much time has 66

runninginsight.com

always an idea on the horizon that’s better. If anything, the most innovative among us are always on the prowl for a gamechanger coming down the pike.

elapsed, I feel like I’m still earning my stripes. Like I still need to attend a menu of future trainings, maybe even endure more big life experiences, before I’ll be on par with the run specialty players I respect the most. There’s so much more to learn. This perspective has kept me hungry. Ravenous, even. I never fell into an unimaginative rut. Frankly, I still dream of a Jetson’s way of doing things — just press a button, open a little door, and retrieve your customized pair of super speedy shoes. It may happen yet! My way of doing things – whether it’s a customer service flow, an approach to sales, community outreach, or whatever – has never been the only way. I embrace this wholeheartedly. I teach what I believe is the best idea right now, but there’s

Keep It Simple Run Specialty If my time in run specialty has given me any sort of wisdom, it’s that simplicity will always be the most valuable asset. Nobody will ever be inspired by complication. Nor will complexity or convolution do anything but muck things up. As technology advances and the tools at your disposal become fancier, stick to what, above all else, makes you and your business interesting — YOU. Own your beliefs. Show your softer side. Be honest and vulnerable and fair. And make sure you share your passions and reasons for your passions. These are the things that can turn any business into a powerhouse. All of us, whether we are able to name it or not, want togetherness more than anything else. Let’s make sure we give this to each other. As you wander around The Running Event in Austin this month, yukking it up with your industry colleagues at the trade show, Houndstooth, or in Austin at-large, dust off that older version of you who knew less. Remember the first time you came to TRE and how wideeyed you were. Channel the you who was once amazed by video treadmills, walk-across scanners, zero drops and big squishy soles. Humbly reinvent yourself in preparation for another couple decades of similar advances. Us old dogs can learn new tricks — but we need to be actively open to it. Savor each day and keep Austin Weird, folks. It’ll all be over before you know it. n

s I near my 20 year mark in the running industry, I feel like it all happened in a blip. Seems only yesterday I was stumbling over words like pronation and supination while trying to learn the bones of the foot. Not to mention a back room filled with shoes I worked so hard to know — many of which would now fetch top dollar in the collector’s market. I marveled at their attributes. Those fat laces, puffy tongues, and wide uppers made me wonder if I was witnessing the pinnacle of run specialty. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Well, I am one of the industry’s old dogs — with many, many visits to The Running Event under my belt. And unless I actively seek some sort of reinvention, personal and professional, I lose my credibility. I become that guy incessantly lauding the so called good ol’ days. My intrigue gets traded for pessimism and critique. I do things a certain way because I’ve always done things a certain way. And though I may be respected for my long affiliation in the landscape, I’m never called for counsel because I am no more than a relic of the past. A curiosity. How grateful I am for all the friends and mentors who advised me to stay humble as I weaved my way through an invigorating career. To stay fresh. To not take today for granted. To make the most of the next staff gathering or TRE appointment or change a process before it needed to change. These small moves have made all the difference.
