RUNNING LAB RISES TO THE TOP!

After a finalist nod in 2023, Michigan-based Running Lab breaks through and captures Store of the Year honors at the The Running Event 2025. By Danny Smith, Senior Writer

he second time turned out to be a charm for the Running Lab. After being named a finalist for Store of the Year in 2023, the well-respected run specialty retailer returned to The Running Event (TRE) this month with high hopes their second turn as a finalist would deliver a different result. It did. The Brighton, MI-based run specialty shop helmed by Ken Larschied and Toni Reese earned 2025 Store of the Year honors at TRE’s Industry Awards Dinner on Thursday, December 4, in San Antonio.

The 14-year-old operation emerged from a capable and accomplished group of five finalists that included Good Times Running Company, Sole Sports Running Zone, Fleet Feet Charleston and Point 2 Running Company. The entire 24-member Running Lab team was in attendance to celebrate the announcement, enabled by a two-day shutdown of the shop and store-funded plane tickets allowing every staff member to hear the news firsthand. “We won’t have a Christmas party this year, but everyone’s okay with that,” Larscheid says.

Running Lab’s 2025 Store of the Year honor follows years of entrepreneurial risk taking, strategic bets and calculated investment in staff training and processes to ensure high-end customer service and seamless operations. A former New Balance rep, Larscheid opened Running Lab after years of sharpening his thoughts on customer service and crafting a business plan. He then secured the support of his new bride, Carrie, and a cozy retail space in downtown Brighton to launch Running Lab in 2011. “I saw the vision right away of what

Store of the Year: Running Lab (continued) Running Lab could be,” Larscheid says. “I just knew if we could rely on my values of what I wanted this business to be and what I wanted customer service to look like in run specialty, then we could build something special.” From the jump, Larscheid leaned into a thorough fitting process incorporating good form running into the equation, which remains core to Running Lab’s DNA. He and his early team members – one full-time and one part-time employee – also focused on ultra-personalized service bolstered by touches of Midwestern nice. In fact, nearly 15 years later, Larscheid not only recalls his first sale – a Mizuno Wave Rider – but even the customer’s name — a local triathlete

RUNNING LAB Brighton, MI runninglabstore.com Key Personnel: Ken Larscheid, Founder/Co-Owner; Toni Reese, Co-Owner; Aleighsha Nichols, General Manager; Keith McCaffery, Floor Manager; Meghan Zoll, Marketing Manager; Blake Strand, Buyer; Jacob Sapienza, OffSite Event Coordinator. Shipping Managers: Jen Cructhfield, Sidney Jonckheere, Meagan Houhanisin History: Running Lab was founded in July 2011 by Ken Larscheid, whose vision was to create a run specialty store that would promote the active lifestyle in the downtown Brighton community. The mission includes expert fit specialists passionately driven to provide the best recommendations and solutions for every customer that walks into the store, while leveraging technology to help support the best-in-class service being provided. Over the past 14 years, the business grew into a healthy run specialty store, relocated to a larger space, acquired a warehouse and became the retail partner of the Detroit Free Press Marathon. In Their Words: “Our people make all the difference. To be the best running store, you need to have the best people — and our people are our uniqueness. Each team member brings different talents, accomplishments and strengths that make us stronger together. They are the heart and soul behind our loyal customer base, our 5-star

named Bruce who continues to frequent the store. Turning Points After establishing roots in Brighton, Running Lab’s momentum accelerated in 2015 when Reese joined the team. The outgoing, energetic Reese immediately embraced the store’s mission and ethos. Even more, she leveraged years of training and development in the foodservice arena to fortify Running Lab’s operations and propel its growth. “While my strong point was really buying behind the scenes, marketing and some other big-picture ideas, Toni focused on culture and staff more than I ever did,” Larscheid says of Reese, who after

Google rating and the driving force behind Team Running Lab’s strides. This team rises to the top when it comes to overcoming challenges, and that spirit is what truly sets us apart.” What the Award Means to Them: “It means everything. Knowing our hard work is being celebrated throughout the industry is both incredible and overwhelming. As a one-door running shop, being recognized as one of the best running stores in the country is truly special. This recognition from our customers means the world to us. It shows how much they value our commitment to high standards, exceptional products and genuine service. Most of all, this award is a massive team celebration — a family milestone we’ve achieved together. Knowing we did this as one team is the icing on the cake…or the double knot in the shoelace!” 2026 Plans: “In 2026, we’re not focused on creating new things —we want to get even better at what we already do. We often look at something we’ve built and think, ‘We’ve done awesome, where can we take this next?’ We plan to invest in our team members’ growth, helping their careers flourish as Running Lab grows. We want to make an even bigger impact on the wellbeing of our community by expanding programs for kids and women, supporting runners chasing new personal records with Team Running Lab, and partnering with nonprofits making a difference for our neighbors and loved ones. When Running Lab grows and succeeds, so does our community.”

years of serving as Running Lab manager recently became the store’s official co-owner after completing a multi-year buy-in agreement. Powered by year-upon-year revenue growth, Larscheid steered Running Lab’s move into a new 4400-square-foot home in Brighton in 2021. In nearly doubling its footprint, Running Lab enjoyed added space to accommodate its swelling product assortment, improve merchandising and host larger group events. The new building also featured a dedicated area for shipping and receiving. “The move was our moment where we knew this was going to kick into a different gear,” Larscheid says. Indeed, Running Lab picked up its pace as it settled into its new home. In 2022, the store became the official merchandise retailer for the Detroit Free Press Marathon, a position elevating Running Lab’s visibility across the region and allowing it to showcase its service in a different way. Still today, the store handles everything from designing official race swag to processing and shipping online orders for official event gear. Late last year, meanwhile, Running Lab moved its e-commerce business over to Shopify, which opened existing bottlenecks and enabled Running Lab to enhance the digital experience for its customers with a more streamlined, user friendly and polished process. Today, about 30 percent of the company’s total revenue derives from e-commerce, well beyond the industry’s 11

runninginsight.com

single-digit average. “We wanted our customer experience online to better match what it was in the retail store,” Larscheid says. A Consistent Climb Since its 2011 opening, Running Lab has yet to record a down year, according to Larscheid. He attributes that ever-ascending 14-year run to a diversified business including the brick-and-mortar retail shop, e-commerce and other revenue-driving endeavors, such as off-site medical events. “We’ve always pushed growth, which has come from different spots over the years as we’ve fostered and dedicated more resources to specific areas of the business,” he says. Re ese, however, ca l ls Running Lab’s staff the biggest differentiator of all. The store features about two dozen employees, one-third of whom are full-time staff members receiving benefits. “It’s really important for us to have that familiar face working on the sales floor with reliable hours, so fulltime is very valuable to us in our store,” Reese says.

Full-time staff, she cont i n u e s, h el p s c u lt iva t e intentionality, particularly as Running Lab team members genuinely care about their work and the store’s success. “Whether it’s on the sales floor with a medical referral or our buyer being fiscally responsible or our shipping team paying extra attention to what the customer receives in the mail, everybody minds the details,” Reese says. “In every aspect of our business, we look at who we’re serving and how we can do that to the best of our ability. We’re never interested in just checking a box.” For Larscheid, consistency in purpose, operations and attitude matters and he has little interest in chasing new goals if it comes at the expense of reliable execution. “When we do something, we want it to be to the level we would be proud of,” he says. “If we can’t execute, then we won’t take it on.” Charging Ahead Into 2026 As for what’s next at Running Lab, Larscheid and Reese say that’s a constant

point of discussion. “The conversation usually starts with Ken saying, ‘What do you think about this?’ followed by an evil laugh,” Reese jokes. But the comedy always gives way to candid conversation and careful analysis. “And if a specific initiative is something we feel comfortable with and we know our team is ready for it, we’ll tackle it and take it on,” Reese says. Growth, Reese reminds, does not have to come from additional storefronts. It can also come from optimizing an existing process or investing in staff. Over the years, Running Lab leadership has focused on evaluating the possibilities and then executing on the appropriate initiatives. Such diligence has fueled its success and Larscheid intends to stick to that formula – with Reese making sure of it. “There are lots of opportunity out there, but what’s right for us?” Larscheid says. Perhaps the future can wait a pinch, though. Larscheid, Reese and their team deserve to take a well-earned victory lap. n © 2025 Diversified

Wayne has always had the reputation of being one of the more unhealthy cities in the United States. From Day One Fleet Feet Fort Wayne set out to change all that by developing numerous training programs and events that specifically focused on the beginning runner or walker. The store’s staff and its owners make sure that they start each day with the thought process of, “How can we change someone’s life in a positive way and make it better?” and knowledgeable staff. In Their Words: “We believe that what makes our store the most unique is our community outreach. In the past year, we have donated more than 200 pairs of shoes and socks to children in need at the Boys and Girls Club of America. We have also helped an organization called Blessings in a Backpack by helping put together over 200 ‘Brave Bags’ benefiting neglected or abused children in northeast Indiana. We have plans to grow approximately 11 percent year-over-year by launching an aggressive workplace fit program and bringing the Fleet Feet shoe-fitting experience to major employers. We will now be adding a local shoe donation program to several other local community centers, such as the Rescue Mission and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Again, we will fit and donate shoes to those in the community who are in need. running store in our area and we provide each customer with a personal, one-on-one customer experience. Due to our location and small-town roots, we are able to expand our efforts into rural communities. With our boots-on-the-ground approach, this allows us to actively build healthier communities rather than waiting for folks to come to us.” What the Award Means to Them: “This award signifies that we take pride in what it means to be considered run specialty. This includes being consistent with our mission, store values and team culture. We make a difference in our community with our giveback campaigns and our presence in our local community. Get Fit’s consistency impacts the industry in a positive way when our customers seek out similar run specialty stores in other parts of the country because of the standard that we have set.” 2026 Plans: “It will be imperative that we maintain consistency in our culture, fit process and customer experience as we move into our second location. This will be a learning curve for our team as we move into the unknown, but we all thrive under pressure and are looking forward to the challenge.”

GROUNDED RUNNING Beaufort, SC groundedrunning.com Key Personnel: Tim Waz, Owner and Founder; Jerry Navarro. Track Club and countless local initiatives. In 2025, Grounded Running was once again named a Best Running Store in America and recognized as South Carolina’s Best Shoe Store (two years in a row, 2024 and 2025). In Their Words: “Grounded Running is more than a store — it’s a community hub where every runner, walker and athlete feels seen and supported. We combine technical expertise with genuine connection, whether that’s helping someone find their perfect shoe, volunteering at local races, hosting group runs, or supporting regional charities and schools. Our approach blends performance with purpose, giving back through programs like Sneaker Impact and trail cleanups and partnering with local businesses and non-profits like Habitat for Humanity to build community through shared experiences.” What the Award Means to Them: “This award represents the heart and soul of what we do. It’s not just recognition of sales or success. It is validation of the relationships we’ve built, the lives we’ve touched, and the community that continues to support us. For our staff, it’s a reminder that passion, authenticity and connection matter. Every day, we get to live out our mission: helping people move forward – physically, mentally and emotionally – one step at a time while remembering to stay grounded.” 2026 Plans: “This coming year will be one of growth and innovation. We’re expanding our reach with the opening of a second Grounded Running location and continuing to evolve our digital presence through a new e-commerce platform and creative marketing initiatives, including our ‘I’m Not a Runner, But…’ campaign. We’ll also be launching new training programs, introducing additional brands and deepening our commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Our goal remains simple: to help more people find their stride and stay grounded in every sense of the word.” INDEPENDENCE RUN & HIKE Carbondale, CO independencerunandhike.com Key Personnel: Brion After, Owner/GM; Michelle Smith, Apparel Buyer/Sales Staff; Zachary Russell, Store Manager History: The store was founded in 2006 to be the running store of the Roaring Fork Valley and the outdoor store for Carbondale, but it was immediately obvious that the Valley needed a running store, so we became known as the Valley’s running store and the rest is history. In Their Words: “The thing that makes us stand out is our commitment to our fitting process. Each staff member is trained over weeks (not days) to make sure our customers get consistent fitting from all the staff. We also meet with doctors from the worldrenowned Steadman Clinic at least twice per year to discuss feet, common running injuries, shoes and what we can do to best help our customers to get and stay healthy. We meet with local physical therapists, chiropractors and foot specialists, as well.

2026 Plans: “I am excited for 2026. We are already planning to bring back our Ladies Night event that stopped during COVID and the store is looking to expand our signature trail race, the Mount Sopris Run-Off, to make it even bigger and better after nearly selling out last year. We are looking to get more involved in the biggest road race in the area, we are trying to add a downtown mile to the biggest event in town (Mountain Fair), and we have added a few exciting new brands and look to add to the success of our store and town logo gear.” I RUN TEXAS Three locations in San Antonio, TX: Stone Oak, Bitters, Dominion iruntexas.com Key Personnel: Garrett Sage, Owner History: In the beginning, there was Michele and Mitch Allen, who loved running and each other (not necessarily in that order). The two met on the running trails in Dallas and got married in 2003. In 2009 they moved to San Antonio, where they opened iRun Texas at the Stone Oak location. Each having some 40 years of running experience, they shared that knowledge and passion with their customers, while providing a place for runners to connect. The Allens then opened a second iRun location at Bitters in 2012 and a third store in the Dominion area in 2015. In September 2023, Garrett Sage purchased iRun. His previous nine years of run specialty experience included leading all company-owned (non-franchised) Fleet Feet locations across the U.S.

The other thing that really stands out about our store is the very diverse and extensive selection of trail running shoes we carry. Being located in a classic Colorado mountain town, our store sells about 50 percent trail running shoes and 50 percent road shoes. I always like to joke that instead of having soccer moms come in to buy shoes, we have 50K moms — aka locals that want to run the most iconic trail in our area, the 4 Pass Loop (28 miles, 8500 feet of elevation).” What the Award Means to Them: “My staff really values learning that all their hard work is noticed. Working the floor on a busy summer day with lots of stinky feet and some grumpy customers can be challenging at times (and rewarding), but knowing our staff is one of the best in the country creates a sense of pride. For me, this award has been more than I can articulate. It gives me a real sense of pride and is something I will remember as long as I live. I opened my store in 2006 with one employee and a lot of hope, so I’ve been working to make my store better and better for nearly 20 years with lots of ups and downs. Sometimes you wonder if you are doing a good job and if the customers and industry even know who you are and how much you care. To win this validates the hard work and is an acknowledgement that I have done some things right.” 37

JOHN’S RUN/WALK SHOP Three locations in Lexington, KY johnsrunwalkshop.com Key Personnel: Melody Marshall, Owner; Matt Reno, Marketing and Events Director; Kellen Ague-Kneeland, Shoe Buyer; Eva Jackson, Race Director; Lisa Thomas, Floor Manager; Inventory Control: Jessica Cravens, Peter Brier History: John’s Run/Walk Shop was founded in 1978 and its original location in downtown Lexington remains the flagship store. A second store is located in Lexington’s Palomar Centre and this fall a third store is opening in Lexington’s vibrant Hamburg area. In Their Words: “John’s Run/Walk Shop strives to be an important part of Lexington’s local community. As a small, family-run business, we support central Kentucky as much as we can. We work with local vendors and support local causes such as University of Kentucky’s DanceBlue (which raises funds for pediatric cancer research) and Girls on the Run Central Kentucky. And we take part in initiatives to protect our local environment. We also operate John’s Bluegrass Racing Company, putting on multiple events throughout the year, from one milers to half marathons. We want to encourage healthy activity for people of all ages and fitness levels while supporting various local charities such as Special Olympics Kentucky. Further, our original goal in starting this racing arm of our business was to make racing better in Central Kentucky. In a saturated market where you can find a running event every weekend, we wanted to ensure that the local race calendar had races that people could count on to be unique, high-quality, professionally executed, and just plain fun.” What the Award Means to Them: “This award is validation that the work we put into doing the right thing truly does matter. There are plenty of ways we could cut corners in the name of increasing profit, or just making things easier at the expense of quality. But cutting corners is not the John’s Run/Walk Shop way. We believe in paying fair wages, taking the time to fit customers in the absolute best shoes for their needs and goals, using 38

environmentally sustainable business practices and doing the hard work of building a community around healthy activity. It often requires hard work and sacrifice, but doing the right thing is always worth it.” 2026 Plans: “Having opened a new location in November, a big focus of ours will be making that store as successful as possible. We’ll do that by building awareness and creating community in that section of Lexington as well as in the nearby counties. We’ve already been holding weekly group runs and monthly free 5Ks in our new area. We’ll continue to bring people of all ages and abilities together for these fun activities. But we’ll also be finding new ways to become part of the Hamburg community. We’ll be building partnerships with nearby businesses, including the nearby medical facilities, so that local healthcare workers can know there is a place where they and their patients can go for expert advice on shoes and insoles.”

MILL CITY RUNNING Two locations: Minneapolis and Saint Paul, MN millcityrunning.com Key Personnel: Bekah and Jeff Metzdorff, Owners; Chelsea Kipp, Director of Retail; Luke Windholz, Product Line Manager; Andrea Haus, Community and Marketing Manager History: Mill City Running opened in 2013 in NE Minneapolis and a second location opened in Saint Paul in 2020. In Their Words: “Much of our success as a store begins with our local community. As we’ve grown, we’ve made it a priority to stay true to our values and keep our focus on the people who make it all possible. From the beginning we’ve built our business around a personalized, hands-on approach and that commitment remains at the heart of what we do. By continuing to think small, have fun and stay connected, we uphold the standard of excellence that keeps our community coming back time and again.” What the Award Means to Them: “We are so incredibly proud to be among the Best Running Stores. It validates all the hard work that our staff puts in each and every day.” 2026 Plans: “We plan to bring in some new and interesting brands, continue to elevate our Saint Paul location and, of course, keep things weird.”

personal level, between our five full-time staff, we’ve had one wedding and one engagement this year, so next year should be pretty fun on that front. As a store, we have some fun virtual Strava competitions scheduled to help folks keep moving through the winter months, quite a few local races and events that we plan to support and we’re continuing to build momentum with our monthly ‘Café Raid’ series that takes our Sunday group run to different local coffee shops in the Asheville area.”

MOUNTAIN RUNNING COMPANY Three North Carolina locations: Asheville, Black Mountain and Boone mountainrunningcompany.com Key Personnel: Bill Flanagan and Shaun Pope, Owners; Lauren Pope, Operations. Store Managers: Tim Altimari (Asheville), Brent Kennicott (Black Mountain), Joe Sheryak (Boone) History: In 2015, owner Shaun Pope opened the Black Mountain shop as a franchise of Vertical Runner, a run specialty business in the Cleveland, OH, area (where he’s from and where he worked during college). In 2020, an opportunity for a second location came up in Boone, NC, so Pope took on Bill Flanagan as a business partner and co-owner. In the transition, they decided to go independent and Mountain Running Company was born. In 2021, MRC opened a third location in Asheville. In Their Words: “We are a company founded by trail and ultra runners and in many ways geared toward those runners. Our trail shoe and gear selection is something that we pride ourselves on and that we believe sets us apart from a lot of other stores like us. That said, one of our big goals in our shops is to make any kind of walking/running/movement accessible to everyone who comes in the door, so we stock a wide variety of footwear to do our best to meet all of those needs. Additionally, we have built our MRC community through grassroots connection — lots of weekly group runs, big support of local races and trail work events, and honestly by just seeing our customers out there enjoying the same things that we love. We feel that this shared passion really runs deep in terms of local support for us and what we’re doing.” What the Award Means to Them: “This award is an incredible recognition to earn and for us it means we’re on the right track. Seeing how proud our staff members were when we told them the news was further confirmation — they’ve bought into and believe in this as much as we do. Still, there is still so much more for us to learn and to improve down the road, so we’re very excited to have the opportunity to be at TRE this year and to brush elbows with other shops who have been where we are now.” 2026 Plans: “We are heading into 2026 really excited for what’s to come, even though we don’t have it all planned out yet. In Their Words: “Our staff is what makes NRC unique. Our industry stresses how important our customer service is — it’s what makes run specialty special, right? We ensure we’re taking care of our employees just as much — the people who are working the floor and sitting at the fit bench for 10-40 hours per week. Whether it’s paying Naperville’s livable wage, staff perks, a fully stocked kitchen, profit sharing and 401K, or creating a fun, welcoming, hardworking culture, we want our employees to want to work retail and to make NRC just as special for them as it is for our customers.” What the Award Means to Them: “Working retail isn’t easy, and we hold our employees to a high standard. To be able to invest back into them and receive this recognition from our community, who we care so deeply about, is the best compliment we can receive.” 2026 Plans: “We’re opening up a new store in 2026 in Downers Grove, a suburb about 10 miles east of Naperville.”

RUN FLAGSTAFF Flagstaff, AZ RunFlagstaff.com Key Personnel: Sarah Sherry, Vince Sherry and Nick Arciniaga, Owners History: Run Flagstaff was founded in 2005 by Sarah and Vince Sherry, two former collegiate athletes who moved to the running mecca of Flagstaff to chase their dreams of running professionally. True to their nature as dreamers, they brought Run Flagstaff to life, helping to strengthen and grow Flagstaff’s already historic and dedicated running culture. While Flagstaff’s running lore long predates the store, Run Flagstaff has played an honorable role in elevating the local running scene, supporting community events and outfitting some of the best runners in the world. Over the years, Run Flagstaff has also become a staple in the casual and occupational workspace, and has been voted as Flagstaff’s No.1 Shoe Store for several years running. In Their Words: “Our shoe sales are roughly 60/40 trail to road, while the national average leans closer to 95/5 road to trail, a reflection of our environment and community. Our store sits in one of the most iconic running destinations in the country, a place where you can hit world-class trails, train along the famous Lake Mary Road or run laps on one of Flagstaff’s many tracks. Flagstaff offers all four seasons, endless sunshine and crisp, highaltitude air that attracts runners of every level. If you head out for a run, there is a high likelihood you will run into some of the athletes that many people only read about. And it’s a guarantee that at any time of the day you head out the door, you’re going to see someone you know, whether friend or family. Our store reflects that environment. It’s a space that celebrates the natural beauty, adventurous spirit and hard-working athletes that make this community so special.” In Their Words: “This award is a meaningful acknowledgment of the work our team has poured into supporting and uplifting the Flagstaff running community. While no one here does this work for recognition, it’s incredibly rewarding to know that our efforts have made a local impact strong enough to be seen nationally. Flagstaff is a small city with a big heart — the kind of place where people show up for each other and want to see their neighbors succeed. This award is a reflection of that culture and the mutual support that fuels both our team and our community.” 2026 Plans: “In recent years, Run Flagstaff has undergone 45

exciting growth and transformation. We’ve doubled our retail space, allowing us to offer a better shopping experience, expand our product selection and create room for new community events and staff spaces — including our own in-store gym, office and break area. Looking ahead to 2026, we’re focused on bringing new life and creativity to our expanded space. One of our favorite initiatives has been hosting brand pop-ups, most recently with Diadora, which transformed part of our store into an event and promotion hub. The success of that partnership sparked new inspiration and we’re now collaborating with more major brands to create immersive in-store experiences that connect directly with the Flagstaff running community.”

We intend to add a 15K distance to the 5K race and raise additional funds, so this event becomes our only annual fundraising event for the program. To date, we have given out 287 gear grants to local track and field and cross-country athletes in need. We are also improving our community run/walk experience by designating a community run captain, connecting new runners and walkers with someone in their pace range, identifying run/walk leaders with matching gear and giving folks access to our routes via QR code. Additionally, we continue to look for opportunities to expand our operation, both in a larger space in Eugene and potentially locations in other cities.”

We’re expanding our private label product lines with unique partnerships, rolling out new canned cold brew coffee and flavored sparkling waters made for endurance athletes and enhancing our digital experience with unique content. Event-wise, we’re dreaming up bigger and bolder activations — think themed races, live art, music and surprise-and-delight moments. We’re also investing in staff training and development because our people are the heart of what we do. And, as always, we’ll continue giving back through fundraising, youth programs and grassroots partnerships that help lift up our whole running community.”

Employees for 20 to 40 years: Gary Paperno, Nancy Cattabiani, Dave Frazer, Craig Gluf History: The journey began in 1985 with the opening of the first store in the heart of Farmingdale Village, NY. Over time, after outgrowing the original location and relocating twice within Farmingdale to accommodate an expanding customer base, a second location opened in Huntington Village in April 2021. In Their Words: “We are super excited to have just celebrated our 40th year in business this past April and we had an amazing celebration with a run and party. Being that we have been in business for 40 years, former high school athletes that have been our customers for decades are now bringing in their own children and it has truly been a full circle moment to see. This is a proud time for us because we believe we are delivering an impactful experience with the new generation so they will continue to keep coming back to shop with us. We also opened a second location in 2021, just as a major pandemic was ending. This was no easy feat, but we are so grateful that we were able to financially find a way to do so. It is our goal to inspire everyone who walks through our doors to have the best experience possible. As a small, local company, we really try to do the best we can because today you can easily buy online. We have been an integral part of the running community on Long Island since 1985 and have been making a difference in our customers’ and teammates’ lives. Winning this award feels like we have been training for our own race and are finally receiving our own medal at a very special finish line.” 2026 Plans: “We plan to continue to grow by adding more new experiences to our group runs, making each event more unique and engaging for participants. Recently, we partnered with a yoga studio and a cycle studio in the community. As part of these collaborations, our runners were given the opportunity to attend a complimentary class at each location. This initiative allowed us to connect with local businesses and introduce our members to activities beyond running. By integrating unique experiences into our running events, we have created an atmosphere that excites our members and encourages ongoing participation. Offering something different at each group run helps keep the events fresh and motivates people to continue showing up week after week.”

ONE MORE THING ...

TRE 2025 Takeaways Running Insight senior writer Danny Smith shares observations from three days in the Alamo City.

A

fter years of calling Austin, TX, home, The Running Event moved about 80 miles southwest and planted its flag in San Antonio for 2025. The Alamo City proved to be a wonderful host for a TRE delivering its characteristic blend of energy and enthusiasm, collegiality and connections. Running Insight senior writer Danny Smith shares some notable takeaways from his TRE experience. Intense battle for share of foot According to proprietary data tracking from Karnan Associates, five of the top six footwear brands in independent run specialty (Brooks, Hoka, New Balance, Asics and On) saw their sales figures drop in 2025 compared to 2024. Only Saucony, with a modest uptick of one percent, saw a positive jump. At the same time, Altra, Nike, Mizuno and Topo all recorded positive gains from market share slots 7-10. Powered by a sexy new lineup of trainers, Nike saw an impressive 35 percent year-to-date sales gain in independent run specialty, while Topo soared 30 percent as it continued building upon its foundation of creating high-quality, comfortable product. The numbers underscore the competitiveness of the market, the grinding battle for customers and the unrelenting pressure to innovate. Speaking of which … We are in the golden age of performance running footwear. Innovation is coming from every direction, in every category, from brands big and small. In addition to the major players rolling 64

Running Insight senior writer Danny Smith (right) and editor Michael Jacobsen (center) met with dozens of exhibitors, including Diadora, during the two days on the show floor at TRE 2025. out exciting new models and updates, fledgling brands are similarly entering the market with compelling options and further intensifying the competition for consumers’ attention. After debuting at TRE last year and earning fanfare across 2025 with its first performance run models, Mount to Coast returned to TRE in 2025 with a bigger, grander presence and more footwear to display. Kiprun, owned by European sporting goods megaretailer Decathlon, announced its U.S. launch in San Antonio and is eager to leverage its resources to gain market share. And R.A.D. came to TRE with exciting momentum following shiny reviews of its first model, the UFO. OTIVM is also making some waves. Curating the shoe wall has never been more difficult for run specialty retailers, who have abundant options and so much to consider, from a brand’s trajectory and market niche to its distribution strategy and the support it provides retailers. This is no

easy feat. The footwear pendulum swings After years of stack heights on performance running shoes growing and growing and growing, might we have finally reached our – ahem – max? To be certain, high-stacked shoes remain commonplace and brands across the TRE floor touted high-stacked footwear. However, the pendulum might finally be swinging in a different direction. After the minimalism era ushered in a focus on natural foot movement, the pendulum had a decade-plus long swing toward maximalism. Running footwear became high tech and high cushion. Bases widened. Shoes could resemble blocks, even if dynamic midsole foams and plates ensured lively rides. One of the most visible new releases on the show floor, however, demonstrated a potential marriage of two eras often seen at odds – and bucked the maximal trend in the process. A © 2025 Diversified

decade in the making, the Brooks Glycerin Flex combined the latest in midsole technology with a deep midfoot groove prioritizing flexibility. “It’s a shoe for the runner who wants to feel connected to the road but doesn’t want to compromise on the comfort and support of a cushion shoe,” Brooks PR told me in advance of the new model’s release. In fact, Brooks senior vice president of footwear and apparel Carson Caprara even suggested a new name for the category: “essentialism.” Might the Glycerin Flex be a harbinger of things to come? In conversations with a few different footwear brand representatives about discoveries on the TRE floor, I suspect it could be. High stack isn’t going out of style, but there seems to be accelerating focus on increased flexibility in performance running footwear. Sayonara, running shoe classifications Once upon a time, running shoes were classified as either neutral, stability or motion control. Across more than two dozen meetings with footwear brands on the TRE show floor, however, not a single one discussed their footwear in these traditional silos, even if they could. It wasn’t necessarily a surprise, as many brands long ago shifted to dropping their 65

home’s door and travel roadways before hitting a trail. The versatility of these hybrid models offers run shops an interesting value play to present customers, specifically those who run on varied terrain or even encounter wintry conditions: get a bit more ruggedness without sacrificing ride. Is the Brooks Glycerin Flex, which debuted at TRE 2025, an indicator of where footwear design is headed? The company’s Carson Caprara (center) certainly thinks so. Meanwhile, Mizuno (photo below) is one of many brands redefining how running shoes are being categorized. different models into categories better aligned with the intended feel of the shoe. As one example, Mizuno has four categories: Speed, Bounce, Cruise and Float. Speed is all about fast while Bounce brings pop to daily miles with models like the Neo Zen and Neo Vista. Cruise delivers reliable support and cushioning while Float provides plush, high-caliber cushioning in both a traditional neutral shoe like the Wave Sky and a stability shoe like the Wave Horizon. In case you didn’t know, the traditional way of

classifying running shoes has vanished, an admittedly odd reality for ol’ shoe guys like myself. The growing gravel category Years ago, the gravel – or door-to-trail – category did not exist. Today, the running shoe mashup of road footwear sensibilities with trail footwear pragmatism is burgeoning. Not surprisingly, European brands such as Craft and Salomon are leading the charge, fueled by the realities of local environments where runners can often start a jog at their

A focus on … laces? Though shoelaces are an essential component of performance running footwear, they are far from sexy. As a result, shoelaces can be overlooked, minimized and discounted by brands who have so much to consider in building a compelling model for the marketplace. Increasingly, however, I’ve seen brands take greater care with the laces they choose, understanding that shoelaces, modest as they seem, represent a daily touchpoint with runners. A brand like Tracksmith, for instance, has clearly invested in beyond-thenorm laces to give users an elevated tactile experience. (Of particular note, a number of brands are foregoing shoelaces altogether, including On’s breakthrough work with its LightSpray products.) At TRE 2025, I noted something else with shoelaces. From one footwear booth to the next, I saw upcoming models featuring sawtooth laces, which have serrated edges to help ensure a tidy lock. Once the domain of racing shoes, sawtooth

laces appeared on trail shoes and daily trainers alike on the TRE floor. It’s a minute observation, but an interesting one demonstrating how brands are working harder than ever to mind the details. Surprising finds While the big booth spaces at TRE capture outsized attention, it’s the smaller vendors inhabiting 10-by-10 foot booths that bring particularly unique energy to TRE. Understanding they can get lost in a sea of 350-plus exhibitors on a massive trade show floor, their creativity and push to stand out is impressive and inspiring. Tantrums, for instance, is a one-year-old company selling two different hydration vests – a small, niche company in a small, niche category. And yet, the California-based startup caught eyeballs with its bodega-styled booth featuring Tantrums-branded bottled water, a black-andwhite checkered floor, a live security feed of the booth and a refrigerated display case containing its vest styles. It was hard to walk by and not be intrigued. And notably, some of these small booths might hold the greatest potential to help running stores increase revenue and profitability, perhaps providing an opportunity to sell more to existing customers. Consider Sweaty Ponytails, an upstart greeting card company tucked on the far edge of the expo hall. Its 66

runninginsight.com

Fledgling brands, including Kiprun, European retailer Decathlon’s shoe brand that made its U.S. debut at TRE 2025, are bringing excitement and innovation ro run specialty. Meanwhile, smaller brands such as Sweaty Ponytails (below) and its novel greeting cards are providing retailers with another potential revenue stream. colorful greeting cards carried fun memes like “now you can put one of those stupid 26.2 stickers on your car” and “don’t poop your pants.” The greeting cards represent a quickgrab, add-on item capable

of driving overall spend in running shops. Optimism abounds During her featured presentation on TRE Education Day, Circana’s Beth Goldstein shared data

showing event participation growing eight percent in 2025, while involvement with running clubs jumped 60 percent and performance running shoe sales climbed nine percent. She also noted a projected eight percent year-over-year increase in running footwear sales in 2026. Exciting news for shoe peddlers, right? Dial down further and there’s additional positive energy. Despite ever-increasing competition from online power players such as Amazon and Zappos as well as footwear brands’ swelling direct-to-consumer efforts, independent run specialty saw dollar sales, unit sales and average selling price all climb from 2024 to 2025, according to Karnan Associates data. In short, indie run specialty, not just the overall running market, is healthy and trending in a positive direction. Are there headwinds? No doubt. Business costs, in particular, continue eating into profitability and causing consternation while labor remains an ever-persistent concern. But by and large independent run specialty has reason for optimism. The formula of personalized service plus thoughtful curation of goods plus community connections continues working. Even more, though, running retailers have proven to be an enterprising, problem-solving bunch more than capable of overcoming challenges and securing success. n
