DEAR Runners and friends Twenty-three years ago, sitting in a Prague pub, my friends and I first expressed thoughts about setting up a marathon here. I couldn’t possibly have known then how such a small event could flourish. At the time, just over five hundred runners made it across the finish. The running boom was a long way off. And what about now? Things couldn’t be more different. An incredible 82,883 men and women runners took part in RunCzech Running League races in 2017 alone. Adding in expo visitors, runners’ friends and family, plus spectators on race day saw us reaching upwards of 390,000 people. And next year we expect to welcome our one-millionth runner! Despite all this great news, I remain convinced that the running boom still has potential for further growth. We’re

likely to see the number of runners and races increase for many years to come. And that can only be a good thing. From a health perspective. From a cultural perspective. From an economic perspective. I’m also truly delighted to report that this year’s RunCzech runners did exceptionally well, resulting in four Czech records, nine race records and five world records! The accomplishments of our beloved Joyciline Jepkosgei, in particular, from the RunCzech Racing Team has shined a light on RunCzech events. But our success and the success of all international events, would not have been possible without support and assistance from a whole host of other people. If it weren’t for the spectators along the course, the pacemakers, volunteers, our entire team and each and every participating runner, our races would never

have become what they are today. We are grateful to all our partners, for their support and their trust. Together we make dreams come true. I would especially like to call out the mayor and other officials in Prague city government and districts, the mayors and governors of each of the towns and regions in which we stage our events, as well as the members of the European Union. Without their support; without their enthusiasm; without their wisdom, we would not exist. So, thank you all. For twenty-three years now I have stood at the finish line of all our races waiting for all runners to complete the race. And each year, as I watch the crowds get bigger and bigger, and see more and more runners competing, I think to myself, “this is only the beginning.” Carlo Capalbo President of the RunCzech Organising Committee Chairman of the IAAF Road Running Commission

all runners are beautiful 2.0 “All Runners Are Beautiful” is our way of welcoming everyone —and we do mean everyone— to the wonderful world of running. To a world of fitness and fun and friendship. This is an homage to everyone who cares enough about themselves to lace up a pair of running shoes and commit to making themselves a little bit better. That’s what victory is, in our minds. Not winning, necessarily. But doing. And enjoying. “All Runners Are Beautiful” is also a testament to how we feel about running. About the sport itself. It is pure. It is liferestoring. It can be social or meditative. It can be a personal challenge or a slow jog through the woods on an autumn morning. Running is a joy. That’s the message here. And everyone who’s willing to participate in this perfect, beautiful sport —young, old, big, slim, fast, or slow— is welcomed. Is loved. Is beautiful.

The Volkswagen Prague Marathon has become an essential race on the world running circuit. An exceptionally beautiful course. And a beautifully managed event, from the moment runners visit our web site to register till the last note of the Prague Marathon Music Festival. We’re doing everything we know how, to make this an absolutely delightful event for runners. And a brilliant investment for our partners.

The Mattoni České Budějovice Half Marathon is perhaps one of the most communal races in all the world. The beautiful, compact main square was designed to bring people together. The winding, Medieval streets make runners feel as if they’re racing though a fairytale. The cheering crowds make you feel as if you are the hero of your own adventure.

This event treats runners to a race along the Elbe River, in view of the central Czech mountains. Plus, the astonishing science fiction setting of Ústí’s industrial landscape. Runners often choose different races for a change of scenery. And no one offers runners more changes of scenery, kilometer-for-kilometer, than Ústí. Part of the running event is also the Spolchemie Hanbike Race, which starts three hours before the half marathon.

Performances by elite Czech athletes Jiří Homoláč had a great start to the season at the Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon. His time of 1:03:23 set a new personal best and was the fastest Czech half marathon time in the past twenty years. The best Czech woman runner Eva Vrabcová-Nývltová had some health difficulties in the spring, yet still managed to surprise everybody at the Mattoni Olomouc Half Marathon recording a time of 1:12:01. At Ústí nad Labem she came in even faster, at 1:11:22.

Performances by elite athletes Another great woman to compete in the Birell Prague Grand Prix was Fancy Chemutai whose time of 30:06 is the third best on record.

RUNCZECH RUNNING LEAGUE: Everyone has the chance to win here In our never-ending quest to encourage more people to get out and participate in races, we have come up with a wonderful new way to motivate runners by having them compete not with elite athletes, but with members of their own professions, adding an extra shot of adrenaline to the race. And giving them a real chance of making it to the top. The unique RunCzech Running league ranking system is split according to sex, age and, most significantly, profession, meaning you can be the fastest manager, doctor, bus driver, hairdresser, etc. The runners are awarded points for each completed race. To be included in this special ranking they have to complete at least three races during a single year. A special algorithm also allows women to compete on an equal footing with men. So even if you’re not the fastest runner in the world, you can still be a star.

dm family runs Our dm family runs with 16,014 runners take place on easy 3K courses, a race that anyone—including children— can enjoy. We created it as a way of lowering the barriers to participation, expanding our running community, and increasing opportunities for our partners to connect with runners—when they’re having fun! Considering the preference we’re seeing for shorter more recreational runs, this puts RunCzech ahead of the pack.

A run exclusively for women Women are embracing the sport of running at a phenomenal rate. As we see more women rising through the corporate ranks; as we see more women becoming entrepreneurs; as we see more women becoming politically active and otherwise asserting themselves in society, it made sense to us that they should have their own race. The adidas Women’s Race 5 km. It’s a chance to celebrate sisterhood, athleticism, and the determination of women around the globe. Watching 2,091 women racing through the streets of Prague, you can’t help but think that they are becoming an ever-greater force in the world. And that the world might be better off because of it.

Junior Marathon championship There’s a saying, “Strong is the new cool.” And plenty of teenagers are buying in. Just look at participation numbers for our Junior Marathon Championship. Admittedly, with members of 10-person teams each running a 4.2-kilometer leg, it’s a long way from a marathon. But they’re doing it. They’re assembling teams. They’re training. And they’re doing it. With this race, we’re reaching people at a time when they’re forming opinions and habits that will stick with them for a lifetime. Our hope is to imbue in them a love of running. And an appreciation for people like you who make it possible.

Special RunCzech projects race expos The expo is a must-stop for participants in our various races. It’s where runners come not only to pick up their start numbers, but to learn. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn about our partners’ products, too.

Marathon Music Festival Music has long provided a kind of drumbeat for runners, helping them put one foot in front of the other, mile after mile. But in an age when more runners are doing this for the shear enjoyment of it, music matters even more. The more running can feel like a party, the more runners like it. The more running feels like entertainment, the more participation we can expect. That’s why, in addition to our giant post-race music festival, singers, bands and DJs are posted every few hundred meters along the course.

Number of bands in 2017: 133

And on race day, dozens of freelancers and hundreds of volunteers, all embrace the same goal – to organise the perfect race! Our volunteers are a kind of hidden force at races, selflessly helping out everywhere you could think of. Running for a good cause Contributing to non-profits who are helping people in need is, in one respect, just like running. Both are great for the heart. At RunCzech, we feel we have an obligation as a good corporate citizen to support worthwhile causes. For us, that makes the hard work we do even more satisfying. What’s more, we have created a platform for others who want to help—our Charity Runs. Runners can visit a list of participating not-for-profits on our website – Salvation Army, Light for the World, Rubikon Centrum, Olga Havel Foundation, Let’s give children a chance, ERGO Aktiv and others – and take steps to make their runs matter even more by raising money for the cause of their choice.

good cause runners Dozens of runners selected a cause to run a race. And we salute those who helped make a difference in the lives of people less fortunate than themselves. But as we enter a year in which we will register our one-millionth runner, we need to do more. Our mission is not only to make the Czech Republic a better place to run. But to make it a better place to live.

Our Yellow Ribbon Run highlights the importance of being open to the possibility of employing people in spite of their criminal records. It’s a controversial program. But allowing people who are completing their prison sentences to compete in their first race gives them something vastly more beneficial than jail. It gives them a second chance.

Where are we heading? The running Perspective Runners in America popularized long-distance races back in the 1960s and 70s. And they drew more and more runners with each passing year. By the end of the 1990s, Europe, aided by strong GDP growth and an open-border policy, had firmly embraced the sport. And the crowds are a testament to how well it’s thriving today. But it’s clear to anyone who’s paying attention, that significant changes are taking place, all for the better. Running as a sport is growing in its appeal to a bigger, broader audience. A third wave of running. Not marathoners, necessarily. But people who see running not as a grueling challenge. But as lifestyle.

Economic impact of our races Prague has long been one of Europe’s most attractive destinations, and RunCzech events held here have most definitely benefited. But for races outside the capital, the opposite is also true, that RunCzech events have stimulated local economies. Events held in Karlovy Vary, České Budějovice, Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem—beautiful places that happen to be off the well-worn tourist paths—contribute mightily to tourist numbers rising and local economies prospering. Plus, races from all 5 cities regularly draw extensive live TV coverage. Hundreds of articles are published online and in print media about the different locales. Thousands of foreign runners, tourists and journalists converge on towns that would otherwise be undiscovered by many runners. And local restaurants, hotels, markets shops and public transportation all flourish as a result.

* All values are derived from inputs from 2014. To calculate the economic impact of our activities, we use our own statistical data about runners registered at our races. Basic data regarding visitor spending is derived from data supplied by GfK, CzechTourism and the Czech Statistics Office. The analysis was processed by independent analytical company Economic Impact headed by MgA. Ing. Tereza Raabová, Ph.D. pursuant to the internationally recognised method of Hamburg University recommended by the Czech government for analysing economic impact.

cities, Institutions and RunCzech Five cities across the Czech Republic host eight RunCzech running events throughout the year. Prague with four races including the famous Volkswagen Prague Marathon, Karlovy Vary, České Budějovice, Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem. They were selected for their unique charm, but also for their common passion for running. The enthusiasm that city and regional officials have shown for our work, and the support they’ve provided to race participants has been astounding. And for that we are all eternally grateful.

Benefits of races for cities and regions • Promotion of cities and regions via live TV broadcasting • Tens of thousands of visitors during race weekend • Millions in new revenue generated from visitors, stimulating   local economies • Positions cities and regions as places supporting a healthy,   active lifestyle • Special projects offer races for children, handbikers, and sports   clubs. what does it take to run a marathon? If you ask runners, they’ll tell you it takes months of training and mental preparation. Blisters, sore muscles, and constantly fighting the urge to quit. But if you ask us, we’d tell you that it also takes the support of people—corporate partners—who care enough about runners to give them this gift. Here’s what our partners have given to make running in the Czech Republic such an extraordinary experience.

A DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE MARATHON Volkswagen’s support of the Prague marathon over the past 15 years has been a lifeline for our events. A chance to introduce more and more people to the joy of running. At the same time, it also tells you everything you need to know about Volkswagen. About their dedication to quality and strong sense of loyalty. Because of our shared values, we have been able to attract almost one million participants to RunCzech events since our inaugural run. On behalf of all of them and ourselves, we’d like to say thank you. Thank you. A million times, thank you.

ALWAYS A STEP AHEAD RunCzech and adidas are two organizations that believe passionately in the power of running. Two organizations who are constantly looking for ways of making the running experience better for everyone. Elite athletes. Sunday morning joggers. And everyone in between. The symbol of our shared values comes, not surprisingly, in the form of a shoe. One specially crafted for RunCzech by adidas. Other races feature event t-shirts and other tie-ins. But specially-crafted shoes? One more place that adidas and RunCzech are at the front of the pack.

Mattoni has been a partner of RunCzech events for nearly 25 years. They have not only been refreshing runners, desperate for a cool drink. They have been equal partners in the RunCzech mission to make the Czech Republic a healthier place by supporting the creation of more than 80 FreeRun courses across the country. Courses that are precisely measured, beautifully groomed and, in many cases, staffed with running coaches who can help make you a more efficient, productive and happier runner. Very cool.

The O2 Prague Relay has become one of the highlights of our running season. Since we opened the race up to everyone (not just corporate teams) participation has jumped by 41,5%. In fact, there’s so much enthusiasm for the run that we had to turn it into a twoday event. O2 clearly buys into our mission to get more people running. More friends out celebrating the joys of being fit together.
