Podcasting on Location

Podcasting on the road opens up your show to a whole new world of both opportunities and difficulties to overcome. As a producer for an on location restaurant podcast I have learned that the experience of on location filming is as different from studio filming as you can get. Of course for on location filming there are things that now need to be considered like equipment. In studio you may be limited by space but for the most part you can affix and set up the best equipment for your purposes exactly how you like. On location everything is up in the air so you need to make sure that you have flexible enough equipment to meet the needs of whatever arises. Having varying mics, stands and recorders can help you be prepared but then you run into the issue of lugging around massive amounts of equipment. To combat this on location recording is usually done on compact reliable equipment that is easy to transport. Anyone that has recorded a show knows that external noise is the bane of a podcaster’s existence and that is ever present on location. Your studio is set up to be as quiet as possible, people’s homes, restaurants or event centers are not. So be prepared to have an excess of noise in the background in post. Now this isn’t always a bad thing, being on location and hearing the thrum of an energetic background behind you and your guest can add an energy to an episode that can’t be replicated in studio.

Page7

Podcasting on Location

Many podcasts have a guest format so many podcasters have become well versed in how to deal with another person that has input on their show. If you are used to dealing with guests remotely you develop a particular set of social skills to help you navigate the guest/host relationship and conflicts that can sometimes arise. Even if you have in studio guests that is still a person coming into your set up which will normally put you in a position of comfort, of course there will be the issues that arise like: scheduling issues, differing ideas for the direction, ego, etc. But when filming on location you are going into a guest's space and they will usually want to have more input and say in the production of the show. Sometimes they will want you to set up in an area that you know will be terrible for audio or video. Because of this in person interaction you will develop new interpersonal skills to deal with the issues that will inevitably at some point arise.

Whether you’re an audio only or video podcast being on location and stepping out of the comfort zone that is your studio can liven up a show, and can sometimes help fend off the dreaded burn out. By switching it up and recording both in studio and on location it can help each episode feel fresh and new. This is definitely not available for everyone and in today’s health climate this might not be feasible but if you are able to it can be a way to help keep your energy up.

Finding Wi-Fi

If you're going to be recording on the road finding Wi-Fi is going to be a number 1 priority. You do not want to be caught trying to upload a new episode in a low data zone forced to watch and make sure the progress bar does not stop.

Luckily there are places all over the country that have free Wi-Fi. Some are better than others but if you're already taking a break from driving, whether it be to grab a bite or a double shot of espresso, all you have to do is search free Wi-Fi or even punch it in on you phones GPS system and something will be near by.

If you are not quiet sure what to be looking for just know there are over 96,000 restaurants and coffee shops that offer free Wi-Fi throughout the United States. Plus, additionally there are over 9,300 retail stores that offer free Wi-Fi. So there is no shortage of options. If you are filming on location somewhere you can also ask permission to use your hosts.

Unless you are sleeping in the car, most motels, and hotels offer guests Wi-Fi for little to no charge. But, you can also find Wi-Fi at locations like: college campuses, libraries, transportation terminals, public parks, hospitals, museums, and gyms.

In a technological world there is always a way to find hi-speed internet to keep your podcast up to date!

Page 9

Where to Go

Fast Food with the Fastest Wi-Fi

1. Starbucks: 24.9

Mbps With 33,833 stores in 80 countries, and 15,444 in the US alone Starbucks is one of the largest chains in the world beating out Subway and Dunkin. It should be no trouble to find one when on the road. There are only 4 US states/territoies that are without a Starbucks.

2. Taco Bell:

14.29Mbps

Having a reputation as the place to fill those late night munchies Taco Bell is an American staple in Mexican inspired fast food. Serving over 2 billion a year Taco Bell has over 5,600 locations in all 50 states and over 7,000 locations in 21 countries. It'll be harder to not find one.

3. Arby's:

12.24Mbps

As long as you're not in Vermont or Rohde Island you shouldn't have any trouble locating an Arby's in the US. The 2nd largest sandwich brand in the world there are over 3,400 arbys in 8 different countires.

5. McDonald's:

4.19Mbps

Arguably one of the most iconic fast food chains in the world. Who doesn't know the golden arches? With over 18,000 locations in all 50 states and 37,000 globally its safe to say you should be able to find a McD's with 20 miles of where ever you are in the world. Not the fastest Wi-Fi but probably one of the most accessable.

Page 10

Preperation

is key in any trip planning process. Whether, its going to the grocery story or a family vacation you need to know what you need, your getting where you going and when you'll be back on the road heading home.

When planning a podcasting trip it's no different. Do you have all the equipment you'll need to get all the content you want? Is everything charged, or are you stocked with fresh batteries? Do you know the layout of the location you'll be working in? These are just a few of the important questions you should asking when packing for a podcasting trip.

Remember the little details! When recording a podcast there are hundreds of little issues that can arise, these issues are easy enough to correct or account for when you are in a comfortable studio space but become more difficult when you are in a new place. Make sure you have the little things that will help you overcome difficulties: Extension cords, spare cables (xlr and usb), spare batteries, different stands (just in case), if it's filmed make sure to bring a change of clothes (Just in case you spill or your shirt just so happens to be the same color as the background, you don't want to be a floating head). The little things are the easiest to forget and the most annoying if forgotten.

DoubleCheck

even if you think you have included and packed everything that you will need there is going to be something that you forgot. This is true for personal vacations and extra true for podcasting on location. Are you filming the episode and have a lighting setup? Did you grab all of the power cords? Are you sure? Or did you just grab all of the cables from the drawer they were supposed to be in...

Speaking from experience when you are worrying about everything that you will be doing you're probably rushing and when you rush that is

Page 11

When you go to plug in a light and realize that "This isn't the cable that goes with this!"

So check and double check you have included everything that you will need and the day before make sure that it is all packed because on the day you need to travel you will have enough stress.

TakeTimeforYourself!

One of the greatest parts of on location filming is being somewhere new or different. Which is great for your show to keep things fresh and interesting but don't forget about yourself. From personal experience, we produce an on location local food show and I find myself so involved in the production aspect that filming that I sometimes forget to eat the food that is being put out for me...That's Free! Yes, this is work but don't forget that you are a person that is trying to do something that they love so might as well take the time to actually enjoy it.

If you are going to a different city or even different country (if you're popular like that) don't just look at the few hours that you are going to recording for and plan that out down to the very last detail ensuring that you have the PERFECT EPISODE and then forget to find a place to eat and go to McDonalds. No hate to McDonalds but a better idea would be to research the area your going to find a few places online that look good and after the show ask your guest or the event promoter where they suggest to eat or better yet (if you vibed during the show) ask them to join you. Or ask them if there is anything fun that you should check out while you're there. If you are lucky enough to be doing what you love and getting to see new exciting places while doing it you owe it to yourself to ACTUALLY ENJOY WHERE YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU'RE DOING! Yeah it's a work trip but who said work can't be fun?

Page 12

Cramped Living Cramped Living

Podcasting can be as big or small as make it, and a lot people end up with a lot of stuff in a little space. Now this applies to both on the road and in studio (especially if you live in your studio). Between tables, chairs, couches, screens/tv's, recorders/mixers, computers, stands, mics, and what feels like miles of cables there is a lot stuff taking up room when you podcast; if you end up filming it that adds another laundry list of equipment pieces you have to contend with.

If you live where you record this can take over a large portion of your home: maybe a corner of your room, maybe what could've been a guest room is a studio, maybe your entire basement is now dedicated to your show. It can be a lot especially if you have a partner or kids (or animals) to get everyone on board with possibly just losing out on a chunk of their home to your podcast. As someone with family that recorded out of a basement for years it definitely took a bit of convincing to get everyone on board with losing the basement to my dream. But, there are definitely ways to manage how cramped your living situation can be.

Now if you travel and shoot on location, cramped doesn't even begin to describe the feeling. Having a studio's worth of audio and sometimes video equipment packed up and ready to go at a moments notice can make even the largest personal vehicle feel like a overpacked Gremlin on the way to your college move in day. Trunk space is a thing of the past, sometimes even back seats. Trips to the grocery store become living games of Tetris as you try to stack bags around your expensive equipment. But this also is manageable in just about the same ways.

Page 13

Cramped Living Cramped Living

Firstly, plan what you buy. Ask yourself is this piece of equipment 100% necessary or is it just something that I want? If you can keep yourself to necessary pieces you'll be better off (Both financially and in the space department).

Secondly, look into portable equipment whether you're traveling or not. There is a lot of great podcasting equipment that is designed to travel, and if it's designed to travel then it is usually small but effective.

Lastly, be organized. Whether in your home or in your car. Even if you have a bare bones set up if you haphazardly throw things in or leave cables splayed about things will not only look messy but take up significantly more room than a set up that is organized and set up with forethought and care.

Allen is a lifelong movie-buff to the point he received a degree in Film and Video from Penn State. After years of listening to podcasts about movies and wanting his own creative outlet, he decided to start his own with his then coworker Ryan. Since then, he has shared his love of comic book movies, classic film and more on the show.

Ryan Bio: You'd be hardpressed to find an action, sport, or older comedy film that's on his, "need to see” list." And, that's primarily what he brings to the table. From Alien to The Abyss, to Brian's Song to Major League, these are just a few examples of what molded his taste in movies growing up.

Devon Bio: Devon Struthers is the most recent addition to You Have to Watch This podcast. He joined the show just about three years ago with excruciating and, quite frankly, baffling gaps in his movie history. Luckily, Allen and Ryan are here to correct these glaring mistakes.

Podcasting Remotely

Remote Podcasting Tools

Being able to podcasting remotely has opened up a whole new world for content creation. It is now possible to find podcasters all over the world to be guests, or collaborate or host a show with. And over the last few years we have gained a whole lot of new resources to use. No longer do we have to struggle. No trying to figure out the best tools to record a call in, with garbled poor sound quality, that comes with over the phone recording. Most apps available even let you record directly onto them so all you have to do is load it into your favorite editing software.

(see issue 1 page 17)

(Bearded B-Roll)

For a little while I was able to work on a movie review podcast with a friend . He had since moved several states away, so the only way we could work together was remotely. From experience I can definitely say there are some learning curves just like there are in the studio, at home, or where ever you record your pod. But as long as you and you guest, friends, or co-host have similar quality mics you can definitely make high quality podcasts with out ever getting out of your PJ's!

Easy to use with a ton of benefits riverside fm is a powerful tool for remote podcasting Unbeatable sound quality, and no need for your guest to download anything the only thing that holds it back is no free options as of right now

Probably one of the easy to use tools hands down Alitu provides simple drag and drop options to help non audio engineers cut back on some of the headaches of editing. Like noise cancelling, compression and voice leveling.
