As we step into the crisp and colorful season of fall, we are excited to share a new lineup of lifelong learning classes and festive monthly events designed to inspire curiosity, celebrate traditions, and foster community connections. This fall, RUI University is focused on embracing knowledge, culture, and togetherness.

Monthly Events to Look Forward To:

September – National Assisted Living Week: Join us as we celebrate this special week honoring the vibrant lives of our residents Expect a variety of themed events, social gatherings, and opportunities to share stories that highlight the spirit of community.

October – Sports History Film Festival: Step back in time through the lens of sports history. We’ll feature classic films and documentaries that showcase legendary athletes, pivotal moments, and the cultural impact of sports throughout history

November – Día de los Muertos Sugar Skull Decorating Workshop: Celebrate the traditions of Día de los Muertos with a hands-on workshop where participants can design and decorate sugar skulls. This colorful cultural experience honors heritage, remembrance, and creativity.

Josh Urban is a speaker, musician, disc jockey, and musicologist. He's hosted radio and podcast programs, played and taught guitar professionally for nearly twenty years, and is an enthusiastic collector of recordings from around the world

Have you ever wanted to learn another language? Well, this is your chance! Join Senora Southhall for Spanish for Absolute Beginners during this class you will learn the language and information about the culture This is a fun and interactive workshop!

Lorie Southall is a graduate of James Madison University and the University of Valencia She fell in love with teaching in 1976 and hasn’t stopped teaching, even while raising 4 children. Over the years she has chaperoned hundreds of students as they traveled and studied in Spain and Mexico. Although she is officially retired she is having a hard time leaving and now is working part-time teaching Spanish 4 and Spanish 5 She estimates she has taught about 7,000 students Her students say that Senora Southall is always positive and always enthusiastic. She loves to create fun and meaningful lessons and activities. She is passionate about her teaching and her students.

In this class, we will explore the beauty and richness of American Sign Language by learning fingerspelling and essential everyday signs Along the way, we’ll also dive into the fascinating history and culture of ASL, gaining a deeper understanding of the Deaf community and its contributions. Through interactive practice, fun activities, and cultural insights, participants will not only build a foundation in signing but also develop an appreciation for ASL as a vibrant, living language. Whether you are brand new to signing or simply curious, this class offers an inviting and meaningful introduction to a world of communication beyond words

Lucy Ferri is a junior in high school and a dual-enrollment student at Brightpoint Community College. She discovered her love for American Sign Language during an in-person class last year and is excited to share the beauty of ASL with others.

Decked out in his signature superhero cape and red Flying Squirrels gear, Nutzy brings smiles to fans of all ages at The Diamond and across the Richmond community Whether he's leading cheers, racing kids around the bases, or visiting schools and events, Nutzy’s mission is always the same: spread joy, promote community spirit, and make baseball FUN!
