The chance of coaching Sydney University in the club’s 150th year may tempt Todd Louden to stay in the job next season. The celebrations are going to be HUGE. The alternative is heading overseas or into Super Rugby. Don’t be too quick to pencil in Stephen Hoiles as coach of Randwick in 2013. Currently helping John Maxwell with the coaching duties at Coogee, the 17 cap Wallaby says he hasn’t given up hope of returning to the playing field next year after being laid low by an Achilles tendon problem. Move over Tony Abbott and make way for Nathan Trist, who played his 175th game for Sydney University last Saturday. It isn’t generally known that Abbott played 41 games in first grade as a prop in making 174 appearances for the Students. Yes, a prop. He was bigger in those days.“We wonder what happened to that chap,” said the man on the mike in announcing Tony’s stats. If sporting genes count for anything, Latika Tombs can’t miss. Her dad Richard was a Wallaby centre and mum Carissa played 97 Tests for Australia as a netballer. Latika has followed in Carissa’s famous footsteps by winning a spot in the NSW Primary Schools Under 12 netball team for the national titles in Adelaide. George Souris, the NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events who is playing a major role in Bledisloe Cup Week, has a genuine passion for rugby. As a second-rower, he played for Gordon and the Autralian Under 23s on a trip to Japan and Taiwan. Then genial George took up the whistle and refereed ten Hunter Valley grand finals. Next year he will push for a street parade of Wallaby and All Black champions in Sydney on the Thursday of Bledisloe Cup week. Funny about Scott Daruda taking the field as a replacement when Manly trailed premiers Eastwood 0-17. Scott, who flew in from Brisbane on the Published by: Eric Spilsted Publishing PO Box 987 Spit Junction NSW 2088 Publisher/Editor: Jim Davis 9969 9294 0411 242 535 jim.davis@rugbynews.org

Monday, became an instant hero by kicking four out of four and gaining priceless yardage with the boot to help the Marlins sneak home 25-23. Ironically, he played with Eastwood before heading off to seek fame with the Western Force and a club in Japan. NSW officials are searching for a big country centre willing to stage next year’s City v Country clash. If not, it will be played as the curtain raiser for a major representative game. Following the mini-crowd at this year’s game at Concord, a stand-alone game in Sydney is out. Still on matters country, Country coach Col Jeffs has flown out for another stint as a National Super League coach in Canada. Greg Growden bristled when I suggested his deep-throat informant known as Radio might be a figment of the imagination. “He’s a real person,” said the Herald rugby guru. “All will be revealed in a couple of months. Stay tuned.” Greg is entitled to be wary as he knows I unveiled Monsieur Blockhead, the interpreter supplied by the French, as a spy on the 1989 Wallaby tour there. Kerry O’Keeffe is VERY funny, so if you haven’t got a ticket for Manly’s big lunch next Friday at the Four Seasons hotel in the city, ring 9976 3658 before they sell out. For starters, Scull promises to reveal Jeff Thomson’s list of northern beaches lovers to the throng. He will tell what it is like be hit for six at Manly Oval and how his dream of becoming a dual international was shattered. We don’t see many Australian-born Chinese playing in the front-row, so keep your eye on Sam Chin, playing at loose-head in third grade for Eastwood. A product of Epping Boys High, he is a big unit who is benefiting from personal mentoring from the club’s legendary prop Neil “The Monster” Tyler. “Sam is passionate about his rugby,” says Tyler. “Watch him.” Playing in Sydney University’s thirsty thirds, Sione Kaivelata, built like a young Jonah Lomu, has swept in for his 20th try in only 12 matches. In first grade, Corey Brown, of Northern Suburbs, tops the tryscorers with 12 after posting a five-pointer in the upset of Southern Districts.

He is a Kiwi prop, loves our winter, Manly... and scoring tries

DANE MARAKI

Manly is a long way from the southern New Zealand town of Dunedin, where 26 year-old prop Dane Maraki had spent six years before joining the Marlins last season. “It’s awesome over here – especially in winter,” he says. “I was walking around the other day in a singlet. No way you could do that in Dunedin.” Originally from Northland, Maraki went to Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland before heading to Dunedin to study P.E. and teaching at Otago University. “I was into league and I used to play basketball when I was younger, but there’s not much in those sports back home,” he says. So rugby it was. Playing through Uni, Maraki made it to the Otago reserve grade side and wider training squad but became frustrated at his lack of progress to higher honours. So last year when Manly, in the depths of midseason injury crisis called, he jumped at the opportunity. Now working as a teacher, Maraki is an indispensible member of the team and only has good things to say about the Marlins – although there’s still a bit of friendly banter about his accent. “I didn’t know anyone’s name when I first got here so I just called everyone ‘bro’. So my nickname was DaneBro,” he laughs. “But Manly is a pretty good club and they’ve looked after me really well.” With four tries, Maraki is equal second top try scorer at the club. The standout is a 30 meter dash down the sideline against Warringah at the Village Green in round six that ended with a celebratory salute to the Manly faithful on the hill. “I never used to score tries,” he says. “That’s why I acted like such an idiot when I scored against Warringah! I thought that was going to be it for the year so I got my celebration in while I could.” You can expect to see some more of the bearded Kiwi’s try celebrations over the next month or two as he attempts to achieve his season goal of winning the Shute Shield with Manly.

“…2019 will be a World Cup for the whole of Asia” by Jim Webster

For obvious reasons, I’m trying to forget the Super Rugby finals. But I’m not forgetting international rugby as a whole and keep being reminded how it’s expanding to places where, years ago, you’d never imagine it would be played. You might recall my mention a few weeks back how Afghanistan has even started playing sevens tournaments. Well, closer to home the IRB Pacific Nations Cup last month was hosted by the Japan RFU and featured Fiji, Japan, Samoa and Tonga, with the final round split over two weeks to accommodate Scotland’s tour of the Pacific Islands after they left here. Before proceeding, could you ever imagine the Stewarts, Campbells, Thomsons and MacDonalds, resplendent in kilts, marching–with some difficulty– along those island beaches to the squeal of bagpipes with coconuts, rather than the caber, dropping all around them? Rugby has certainly changed an awful lot. The Rugby World Cup three years from now is off to England, but after that the new directions being taken by the game will peak when the 2019 RWC goes to Japan, so I’ve got to start telling everyone that “nihon ni ikitai”. Although Japan currently slots into the world rankings at 16th between Georgia and US, the organizing body’s general manager, Koji Tokumasu, said his nation was proud to be the first Asian country to host the tournament and its profile and success would help develop rugby throughout the region. “We are committed to ensuring that 2019 will be a World Cup for the whole of Asia,” says Tokumasu. “It’s very important for the growth of global rugby that Asia continues to develop, that the game grows and that we build towards 2019 with a common purpose of reaching out to more men, women and children. “Asia is a strategically important region for the IRB and shares the vision with JR 2019 of delivering a 5 tournament that is good for the global rugby family,

good for Japan and also good for the game in Asia. “An independent study highlights an 18% increase in participation rates in Asia since the World Cup in 2007. The reasons have been attributed to the growing profile and success of the World Cup, the IRB’s investment strategy and also rugby’s reintroduction into the Olympics from 2016. “The IRB will invest nine million pounds into the development of rugby in Asia between 2009 and this year. “There has already been an uplift in China, where rugby is being played in schools, Sri Lanka and India, as well as Japan, where the game has a rich history.” Rugby’s spread has seen players and officials from more accepted nations heading to these newer nations and it’s interesting to hear their remarks. Matt Cullen, team manger of the Philippines, says: “It’s outstanding that the World Cup is coming to Japan. Asia has such a vast population and area and has been largely untapped by sporting codes, like soccer and rugby. “It’s only recently that those sports have started to make an impact here and yet there’s so much potential for growth. “Japan deserves its opportunity to host the World Cup. They have the infrastructure, the growing tradition and are the strongest union in Asia; so it’s fitting they be given this opportunity. “I’ve no doubt they will do a great job and it will be a catalyst for rugby right across the region. It will lift the game’s profile in Asia throughout the next seven years and beyond.” Sri Lanka’s coach and former England hooker Phil Greening said: “The IRB’s decision to award Japan the World Cup was great and will help make rugby a truly global sport. “Japan will embrace it and I’ve no doubt it will be a huge success, both as an event in itself but also with the legacy it will leave all over the continent of Asia.” Meantime, the Super Rugby finals get mean and serious this weekend, with those who finished 3-6 in the sudden-death playoffs. The semi-finals are next weekend with the final on August 4. And the Waratahs will be sitting back with a beer, watching it all on TV, while trying to figure out just how they might get involved next season. 5

MATCH PREVIEWS

by Terry Smith

Reflecting upon the state of the Sydney premiership, one of Australia’s most famous coaches said: “I think only three teams can win it – Eastwood, Sydney University and Manly.” Such a fearless forecast will give Southern Districts, Eastern Suburbs and Northern Suburbs a point to prove in today’s round. Souths make the trip to seaside Manly to play the Marlins, while Norths will bid for their sixth straight victory when they tackle Sydney University at North Sydney. Easts are at home to competition leaders Eastwood whom they flogged 48-18 earlier in the season. With four rounds remaining and a host of Super Rugby players returning, things are right down to the nitty gritty. No sign of any of the Brumbies, though. In their first home game since Seti Tafua suffered a severe spinal injury on June 23, Norths are staging a big fund-raiser for their second-row forward who now is able to get about using an automotive wheelchair. “Seti is ticking all the boxes,” says Norths coach Scott Fava, adding that the club has formed a special committee to set up a long-term future for him. In the Norths dressing room, there has been a big poster of Seti leaping for a lineout ball with the caption Stay Strong Brother.

NORTHERN SUBURBS v SYDNEY UNIVERSITY The awesome depth of talent in the Sydney University juggernaut unfolds today when the Super Rugby boys take the field against Northern Suburbs before the ABC TV cameras at North Sydney Oval. In come Tim Davidson, Jono Jenkins, Tom Carter, Tom Kingston and Daniel Halangahau. In all, there are six new faces from the Uni team that disposed of Eastern Suburbs 34-22, while Norths have stuck to the side that upset Southern Districts 22-21. University coach Todd Louden is wary of Norths, who have won five straight. Looking to the awful injury suffered by Seti Tafua, he predicts: “They’ll be emotionally charged and Dave Harvey at 10 really suits them. It won’t be easy.”

Fava says: “We know exactly what University are going to give us. They’ll kick to the corners and apply the pressure from there. The game will be

decided by which team defends best.” If Norths can reproduce the fierce, unyielding defence which marked their 12-6 try-less victory over Easts and if Harvey is on song with the boot, they’ll keep the Students honest. Previous match: Sydney Uni 30-10 (at University)

MANLY v SOUTHERN DISTRICTS In a blow to Souths on the eve of their big game at Manly Oval, their captain and fullback Brackin Karauria-Henry has headed off to join a Japanese club. Waratah halfback Grayson Hart has been ruled out by the NSW doctors, but big Kane Douglas comes into the second-row and other Waratahs John Ulugia and Tetera Faulkner join the front-row. Scott Daruda needed a mere thirty minutes last Saturday to show he is the straw that could stir the

Manly mix into a genuine premiership contender. Whisked from Brisbane where he was playing club footy with Brothers club, the new fly-half turned a 5-20 deficit into a into a 25-23 victory over Eastwood. Four out of four with the boot and huge yardage in general play. Still, not unexpected as Daruda has played for Western Force and the Reds and is back from two years in Japan. Into the team come Elvis Tione, Ed Gower and Ryan Hodson up front and Richard Hooper and Lui Siale on the wings. Previous match: Manly 42-41 (at Forshaw Park)

Tip: Manly

The Woodies had enough chances to win two games when beaten 25-23 (they led 17-0 and 207) but today get a boost from the return of skipper Hugh Perrett from the Melbourne Rebels and Ben Seymour while Mitch Lees and Tom Alexander form a new second-row. Fullback Ben Batger was simply devastating in contributing 18 points in the 23-25 loss to Manly, gaining lots of important yardage with incisive running. Previous match: Easts 48-18 (at Millner Field)

Tip: Eastwood

GORDON v WARRINGAH Warringah, still in the hunt for a spot in the top eight with their brave, attacking rugby, have much more to play for. A loss to bottom of the table Gordon at Chatswood will end any hope of the Rats making the top eight, while youthful Gordon have no chance. Coach Sam Harris has promoted flanker George Wyllie in place of Mark Porpiglia, while Gordon dropped flanker Cameron Thorburn for Steve Williams. Previous match: Gordon 12-11 (at Warringah)

Tip: Warringah

PENRITH v WEST HARBOUR For the first time this season, West Harbour coach Daniel Manu has been able to announce an unchanged team. In fact, he nominates last Saturday’s 33-28 eclipse of Warringah as their best of the season because of the defence they produced to keep the attacking thrusts of the Rats in check. “The talent here is amazing, but so often they want to play touch when the other team has the ball,” said Manu. Watch fullback Shaun Treweek, whose season’s tally of 103 includes eight tries, secondbest in the competition. Waratah Brendan McKibbin will play for Easts.

EASTERN SUBURBS v EASTWOOD Eastwood won’t have forgotten how Easts poured through to score six tries in posting a 48-18 victory at Millner Field early in the season. And with Waratah halfback Brendan McKibbin back and fullback Pat Dellit returning from the Western Force, the Beasties will lift from last week’s 34-22 loss to Sydney University. Anton Lavin, another key figure, is back in the centre. 8

Previous match: Wests 25-23 (at Concord)

Tip: Wests

PARRAMATTA v RANDWICK

Previous match: Randwick 4226 (at Coogee)

With All Black Sosene Anesi here for the rest of the season, Parramatta can jump to fifth spot by reversing last month’s 42-26 loss to Randwick after leading 26-14 at the break. At the urging of his friend Gerard Fasavsalu, Parramatta’s assistant coach, Anesi turned up unexpectedly last week and played a full game in reserve grade as the aperitif to scoring the winning try in first grade. Today he will start on the wing in place of young Tuinea Fa’asisila, who is off to New Zealand to play for Northland in the ITM Cup. Randwick are coming off a 34-33 win over youthful Gordon. The home advantage of playing at Merrylands RSL Park (fondly remembered as Granville Park) could tip the balance Parramatta’s way.

COLTS REPORT by Hamish McCathie

Last weekend we enjoyed some beautiful weather and this allowed some free flowing rugby to be played by the colts all around Sydney. Penrith enjoyed their second win for the year with their thrashing of Parramatta and Sydney University remained undefeated when they trounced Easts at Woollahra. SYDNEY UNIVERSITY 58 v EASTERN SUBURBS 0

The Students came out on fire against Easts and continued to play a high quality level of Rugby for the entire 80 minutes of the game. The Students were well lead by the “Burradoo boy” Tim Reid and their set piece was dominant. Everything Uni touched worked and they deserved their huge win. The backs were awesome with flyhalf Jock Merriman, centre James Dargaville and fullback Jonny Vaux having terrific games. The Beasties tried hard although were completely outclassed by a better team on the day. For Easts their brilliant number 7 James Graham was voted their players player. PENRITH 45 v PARRAMATTA 0

Penrith led 7-0 in the battle of the West and Parramatta were in with a chance to avenge their first round loss to Penrith. Penrith coach Ben Tuipuloto must have said some inspiring words at the break as Penrith came out and scored some entertaining tries in the second half to record a comfortable 45-0 victory. Big George captained the team superbly and was rewarded with the three points. The two points went to fullback Campbell who was sound all day and one point went to breakaway Adam Barrington who was awesome at the breakdown. RANDWICK 43 v GORDON 17

Randwick were hoping to continue their winning run against a Gordon team who were desperate to cement their place in the top 8 for the finals. Randwick could not have asked

for a better start with a turnover from the kick off resulting in a try to Rennie Lautolo in the opening 30 seconds of the game. From then on it was a very stop/start game with neither team being able to exert consistent pressure in their opponents half. Randwick scored 2 more first half tries to go into the break with a 19-12 lead. The second half was all Randwick scoring 4 tries to 1 and capitalising on their opportunities in the Gordon 22m. Nathan Roye scored from a well executed set piece move and big prop Tristan Healy continued on his try scoring ways. The game also saw the return of Zeb Holmes after serious injury. Randwicks best were Rennie Lautolo, Will Munro and Jess Harris. MANLY 32 V EASTWOOD 22

Manly's defence was exceptional and they also took advantage of any lapses in defence or errors on Eastwood's part. It was another close loss for an Eastwood team which has simply not clicked as yet. The game was very tight in the first half but Manly scored twice in the last 5 minutes to lead 18–10. The Woods opened the scoring in the second half although both times Eastwood scored Manly countered with a try to run out 10 point winners. The best for Eastwood were back rowers Hamish Hall and Joel Davis, whilst Harry Byrnes' 40 minute return from injury was very impressive. OTHER GAMES

Norths were convincing winners over Souths 31-6 with inside centre John Cameron scoring a double. John has been in scintillating form. West Harbour had a high scoring victory winning 48-36 with their front row showing great power. THIS SATURDAY

Easts play Eastwood, Souths host Manly, University play Norths in a top of the table clash, Warringah host Gordon, Randwick play Parramatta and West Harbour play Penrith. TIPS: EASTS MANLY UNI GORDON RANDWICK WESTS

All ThINGS Rugby MANLY’S NEW RECRUIT SCOTT DARUDA Manly’s new flyhalf Scott Daruda created quite a bit of attention with his outstanding second half debut performance for the Marlins last week. Playing in France and Japan for a few years, this talented player has been off the radar. Scott Daruda was born in Papua New Guinea and attending school in Queensland, captained St Joseph’s Nudgee College First XV in 2003. He turned 26 in February, is 1.84m (6ft) and weighs in at 95kg. He has played Australia U19s (and captained) at the World Championships then played Australia U21s in 2005 and represented with an Australia A side. Daruda also made his Super Rugby debut with the Queensland Reds in 2005. He then signed and played for the Western Force before heading overseas. Possessing a terrific kicking game, no doubt he has been familiarising himself with all the tricks, rolls and knolls of Manly Oval. SCHOOLBOYS TICK ONE UP FOR NSW With State of Origin and Super Rugby NSW has been very lacking in wins let alone adding to the trophy cabinet. The Schools NSW 1 side turned things around with a big 26 – 7 win over QLD 1 in the Australian Schools Championships at St Ignatius College, Riverview earlier in July. Well done to the NSW 1 side that ended Queensland’s dominance of six successive years of ASC titles. PUBERTY BLUES AT SOUTHERN DISTRICTS Southern Districts GM, Craig Hawkings had to find another office for awhile. Filming of Puberty Blues has been taking place at the Forshaw licensed club renamed “Endeavour Club” for the Channel 10 series due to go to air in September. Craig explained the arrangement with the producers Southern Star was a commercial one earning the Rugby Club ‘location’ revenue whilst shooting took place over May and June. He also added that he found the filming process very interesting. From what we have seen in publicity for the series so far, we bet he found it interesting. NEW MANLY i-PHONE APP Manly Rugby has produced an I- Phone App. The app shows fans of the Manly Rugby Union First Grade team the latest scores, upcoming games, news, contact details, and Club history. A one–stop shop for all information on Manly Rugby Union. It is available at the app store at http://itunes.apple. com/au/app/manly-rugby-union/id537509997?mt=8 25And of course it is free to download.

Beastie, Rebel, Hooker... and noted ball runner

HEATH TESSMANN Heath Tessmann has been racking up the frequent flyer points lately, splitting his time between the Beasties and the Melbourne Rebels. “I think they know me by name at the checkin now,” says the 28 year-old front-rower. After a stint playing and coaching in the US, Tessmann was given the opportunity to play Super Rugby by the Melbourne based franchise. “At first it was a bit daunting,” he remembers. “But once you get into training and games and you realise you can play at that level, it’s very rewarding.” Born and bred on the Sunshine Coast, Tessman is equally proficient at hooker and loosehead prop but his preference for the number two jersey prompted his move to the Beasties after a long career playing for University of Queensland. “It was a big call and something I mulled over for some time,” he says. “I’m not a big club jumping kind of guy and I was getting close to 100 first grade games up at UQ, but I had to make the move to play more at hooker rather than prop.” While he enjoys the inclusive club atmosphere at the Beasties, things didn’t go immediately to plan. “In my first few games I ended up playing loosehead anyway, then I played at 6 before I started at hooker. But I haven’t looked back since and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” A great ball runner, Tessmann doesn’t shirk hard work at training or during a match. “I love to get my hands on the ball, I don’t feel involved if I don’t get 10-plus carries a game,” he says. Now off-contract, he is spurred on by unfinished business at the Rebels. “I know I can compete at the top level and I know I’ve got a lot more to offer. Unfortunately I didn’t get the opportunity to do it this year,” he says. In the unlikely event he is not picked up, Tessmann has some beginner barista skills (“Melbourne has made me a bit of a coffee snob”) to fall back on while he finishes off a degree in business management.

WILSO’S WHISPERS by Bob Wilson

more skills and mobility than his Dad. Former Bulls prop Bees Roux who avoided jail time for killing a Policeman in 2010 has joined Italian side Treviso from French club Bordeaux-Bègles.

An update on injured Northern Suburbs second rower Seti Tafua is that he remains at Royal North Shore Hospital with his condition improving slightly having been moved from the Intensive Care Unit to a General Ward in the Spinal Unit. Over the last few weeks there has been improvement in Seti’s upper limb function with improved range and power in his shoulders, elbows and wrists. He is still weak and his hand function is poor. There seems to be some improved sensation in his feet, but Seti’s legs are still paralysed. Now able to sit in a wheelchair for short periods of time, Seti is much improved from when he was initially admitted but remains weak and dependent. He has now started his rehabilitation and attends the gym daily for physiotherapy. Seti is in good spirits and enjoys his many visitors while he uses his new iPad which was purchased with the match fees donated by the Norths players. Seti’s parents are also very appreciative of the ongoing visits and support from Norths players and staff. The Rugby Community also continues to be incredibly supportive with several Sydney Premier Clubs having organised fundraising events. The recent ABC TV Shute Shield game hosted by Eastern Suburbs at Woollahra Oval raised over $12,000. Seti’s home town is also contributing while the Wellington Hurricanes held a bucket collection at the gate prior to their Super Rugby match against the Waikato Chiefs last weekend. The North’s home game today against Sydney University has been renamed ‘Seti Tafua Day’ with all gate takings going to support Seti’s ongoing medical and rehabilitation costs. The Tafua family appreciates all the support from Norths Rugby Club and all the other clubs who have supported Seti. The son of former Easts First Grade fullback, Paul Cramsie is proving to be a very good body boarder. Lachie Cramsie won the Box Beach Pro at Port Stephens recently with crowds filling the beach to watch the competition. The 18 year old Sunshine Coast up-and-comer Lachie Cramsie took out the event which saw body boarders from all over Australia compete for the $10,000 prize. He is ranked in the top 6 in the country and no doubt has a lot 28

The 31 year old played 13 games for Bordeaux-Bègles last year after leaving South Africa under a controversy after the Bulls sacked him after he trained with the Pumas Currie Cup side without their permission during his culpable homicide trial. He stood trial after bashing Sergeant Ntshimane Mogale to death after being pulled over by him while Roux claimed the policeman tried to rob him and that he was just defending himself. He walked out of the Pretoria High Court a free man after receiving a 5 year suspended sentence. The Brothers Rugby Club that plays in the Sub-District Competition held their inaugural “Brothers in the City” Luncheon last week. The Guest Speakers were former Wallaby, Rod Kafer who gave his insights into the game but also a young bloke by the name of Andrew James. Andrew who is just 26 years old was interviewed by former North’s Coach and Operations Manager, Grant “Boof” Richardson and has packed a lot into his life. He served on two different occasions in Afghanistan with the Australian Commando Regiment and has written a book on the exploits of Stan Bisset entitled "Kokoda Wallaby". The interview was extraordinary and as an indicator you could have heard a pin drop in the room which is something different from your normal Rugby Luncheon. Former Randwick player, Brad Dubos and son of Jim Dubos who is one of the best if not the best Rugby Development Officer in the business said that Queeensland State of Origin winger, Brett Tate should not be allowed to play with a toilet seat around his neck. Good call Brad! The Parramatta Two Blues are having a good year and have been boosted by acquisition of former All Black and NSW Waratah, Sosene Anesi for the remainder of season. Also the club will hold a 35th Anniversary Luncheon for the club’s first 1st Grade Premiership in 1977 which will be celebrated at the Merrylands RSL Club on August 31. Tickets available from functions@twobluesrugby.com.au I f you have any stories or news please email bobw@wireless2way.com.au or call: 0438 416 222.
