RUGBY NEWS 90th BIRTHDAY YEAR

BarflyBuzz by Terry Smith

Malcolm Turnbull will never forget the day he took a beautiful French girl to see him play prop for Sydney University thirds on a very muddy day. The Member for Wentworth’s recollection was crystal clear when we spoke on the veranda at Woollahra last Saturday. “I had a good game, scored a try and was very pleased with myself,” he said. When it was over, Malcolm strode proudly to the French lass. “Well, what did you think?” he asked. Her reply? “What colour pullover were you wearing?” Turnbull reflected, “When I played I was 107 kilos, but now I’m 80. I don’t want to lose any more weight because Lucy (his wife) thinks I’d look too gaunt on TV.” It’s funny about Malcolm (he also had a season with the Drummoyne Dirty Reds) playing for Sydney University as Liberal Party colleagues Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey also wore the blue and gold of the Students, both of them also playing at prop. In fact, Abbott made a number of appearances in first grade before coaching reserve grade and ignoring the selection claims of third grader Hockey. The upshot was a famous blow-up at training one night which has become the stuff of legends. Sydney University hope to celebrate their 150th year with not only another premiership, but a victory over Oxford University in the curtain raiser to the Wallabies v Wales Test at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in November. Negotiations for this game are almost complete. Sydney University players have been fund-raising all year so a touring party of 35 can play six matches in the UK, with Cambridge University and Trinity College in Ireland among their other opponents. Still a few tickets left for University’s gala lunch at the Westin hotel next Friday at which Sam Kekovich, AFL chief Andrew Demetriou, Michael Hawker and Michael Cheika will address the throng. For tickets, call 9351 7245. Back to politics…Bronwyn Bishop, the Federal MP for Mackellar who is a regular at Rat Park, won the $100 prize in the draw for Warringah’s 100 Club at the Manly v Warringah game. Published by: Eric Spilsted Publishing PO Box 848, Lane Cove NSW 2066 Publisher/Editor: Jim Davis T: 9427 8879 | M: 0411 242 535 jim.davis@rugbynews.org

Wallaby coach Ewen McKenzie doesn’t believe that big is beautiful. Over the last three years he has shed 25 kilos and looks fit enough to play. Brett Papworth is back from a highly enjoyable trip to England as captain of the SCG XI on which he was the leading run-scorer. “I batted more times than any of the others,” he explains. His biggest thrill was to play at Lords with Simon Katich batting at the other end. One of the most popular characters in Sydney rugby is Jock Cornet, the whimsical Scot who is the long-serving timekeeper of the Easts Beasties. Hovering round the eighty-mark, he also is a member of the Legion of Old Timekeepers, whose crest includes an hourglass (to keep time), a bell (rung at fulltime) and a schooner of beer (to quench the thirst). All from Easts and formed in 1971, the living members of this group of seven are Cornet, Arthur Bullen, now 87, and Mike Malley.

Legion of Old Timekeepers plaque. If genetics were the sole guide to sporting success, one wonders if Ed Doyle would be in England giving Michael Clarke a hand as his grandfather was Jack Fingleton, famed in cricket as an Australian opening bat. Instead Ed chose rugby, kicked off with the Collaroy Cougars and has shrugged off a couple of seasons aborted by injury to complete a century of games for the Warringah Rats. A thrustful winger or centre, he celebrated reaching the 100 mark with a couple of tries against West Harbour.

Grit, work ethic and ability have overcome massive teenage injury setbacks. At 20, he should have a super future.

DAVE PORECKI Last year was Manly front-rower Dave Porecki’s first full season of rugby in over four years. A collarbone injury and two broken legs resulted in a teenage Porecki having eight surgeries which forced him to watch from the sidelines as mates made age group rep sides. It also meant spending long lonely hours in the gym by himself. “A lot of people told me after my second leg injury in Year 12 that it would be too much to come back from, but I just worked hard in the gym while everyone else was out partying,” says the 20-year old Marlins tyro who can play prop and hooker. “This is what I want to do, so I’m going to give it 100% every day and I reckon those days training by myself with no one knowing me were a massive benefit in my work ethic and just never giving up.” After a lot of hard rehab work, Porecki captained Manly’s First Colts in 2012 and graduated to First Grade this year where he has kept Western Force hooker James Hilterbrand in seconds – a monumental effort for a bloke playing just his second season of rugby. “He’s been one of our best players all year,” enthused Manly coach Phil Blake. “His work ethic and ability around the ground is second to none and he trains unlike most young kids his age – he’s got the attitude of someone who’s played first grade for five or six years. If he keeps that up and keeps his dedication, I’ve got no doubts at all that he’s a Super Rugby player of the future.” Having shed a whopping 18kg in the last offseason to be better prepared for the rigours of First Grade, a fully fit Porecki is focused on today’s showdown with Southern Districts which will decide third place on the table. “We want to take on any forward pack and really challenge ourselves before the finals,” the third year Sport and Exercise Management student said. “We’re confident in our ability and we just have to execute all our individual and team roles and it will fall into place.” - by Brendan Bradford Photo: www.seiserphotography.com

Who will claim the Shute Shield?

Will the Wallabies knock over the All Blacks?

by Jim Webster Today is a vitally important occasion for a number of teams, local and national. It’s the last round, of course, in the Sydney premiership before the finals series and might I say that so far this new arrangement has worked well for one and all. With eight teams now able to make the finals, it means those languishing near the bottom of the ladder throughout the season never fully gave up hope, as they might have done so much earlier in past years. Always, about this time of the season, it’s interesting to reflect on those teams that have fulfilled our expectations, and those that haven’t. Now, had I asked you back in April to nominate the four teams you thought would finish at the top end of the competition coming in to this last round, you’d probably all have chosen Eastwood, Sydney University, Southern Districts and Manly, if not in that order. But just how many of you would have correctly nominated the bottom four? Not me, for one. I wouldn’t have chosen Northern Suburbs, Parramatta, Gordon and Penrith to bring up the tail of the field. Honestly, I’d have picked one, maybe two of those, but not all four. I’d have had Warringah there somewhere, but they’ve scampered these past few weeks. With the finals beginning next weekend, the next burning question is: who do you think will win the Shute Shield? To my mind, it’ll be decided on 14 September by Eastwood and University. Eastwood are my favourites, but what has impressed me with University, more than any other club, is the depth of strength they have. I’ve seen them field virtual reserve-grade lineups yet still perform as well as almost any other club. See if I’m wrong…. As soon as the fulltime whistle sounds this afternoon I’m off to you-know-where. 5 I’ve said my prayers and have my fingers crossed that the Wallabies can give the All Blacks a flogging in the Rugby Championship, or at least be highly

competitive. All attention will focus on Ewen McKenzie and what our new coach has been able to do in the short while since Robbie Deans was sent packing. This writer attended training last week and, during a chat with McKenzie, he made the comment that “I hope to make a difference…” His intent has already been shown by what he has done with two players, Quade Cooper and Benn Robinson. With Cooper’s inclusion in his 30-man squad, McKenzie has indicated that he’s determined to play an expansive game, with Cooper the very important pivot of the attack. Just so long as Cooper is more mindful – than what he has been – of where those flying passes are directed and that they don’t end up missing the targeted player. On the omission of Robinson, the Wallabies most experienced prop with 59 Tests behind him, I must say I was shocked that he gave way to the uncapped Brumby Scott Sio. Understandably, McKenzie said Robinson was “very disappointed” when the pair first spoke after his axing. “Obviously for a player of his experience it’s a bit of a blow, but everyone needs to understand you’ve got to be delivering,” said McKenzie. McKenzie seems to have pointed the finger at Robinson for some of the ineffectual scrummaging the Wallabies showed against the British & Irish Lions in that last Test. At least one front-rower had to accept some blame. Then again, is it because of Robinson’s general play, which has drawn criticism? Or for both reasons? Only time will tell if he has made the correct decision and it means a lot of attention will now focus on the loose-head replacement. Tonight’s Test will also see the front-rows operating under the newest scrum sequence (yes, another one), which will have the props bind with their opposing player, using their outside arm, before engaging. Then the referee calls “set” and directs the scrumhalf to feed the ball. The idea is to reduce the impact of the collision by 25% and therefore substantially cut the number of collapses and resets. It has taken a long while to do something about this blot on the game and only time will tell if this latest action is the solution. 5

MATCH PREVIEWS

by Terry Smith

The scenario for the final round of the Shute Shield could have been created by a master of suspense like Alfred Hitchcock. For instance, any one of the bottom three clubs bidding for a play-off spot mathematically could miss out. In the unlikely event of Easts (42 points) losing to lowly Gordon, they could finish ninth, but that would depend on Randwick (40 points) causing the upset of the year by beating Sydney University, Warringah (39 points) toppling Eastwood and Norths (38 points) beating West Harbour. A humble bonus point could well play a crucial part in determining who misses out. For instance, if Warringah are beaten by Eastwood but manage two bonus points and Norths beat Wests, Randwick would miss out. Win, lose or draw, Wests (54) are assured of being fifth. The draw for the play-offs is 1 v 4, 2 v 3, 5 v 8 and 6 v 7, with Eastwood (73), Sydney University (70), Southern Districts (62) and Manly (60) assured of being the top four. However, if Manly eclipse Souths in the ABC TV match and Eastwood (with Benn Robinson) and University win their respective games against Warringah and Randwick, the semi-finals will be Eastwood v Souths and Manly v University. A tasty dish, indeed.

MANLY v SOUTHERN DISTRICTS At Manly Oval First round score: Souths 25-14 Third-placed Southern Districts against the Manly Marlins, who are in fourth spot two points back. Both teams have big, lusty packs of forwards, and Manly coach Phil Blake declares, “We’re expecting a very torrid affair.” Apart from the return of halfback Matt Lucas, who has been in Argentina with the NSW Barbarians, Manly has the same team that disposed of Northern Suburbs 23-15. However, there are changes aplenty at Souths, who have all but one of their Argentine tourists back. Jed Holloway returns at No 8, Rob Horne in the centre and Alex Gibbon on the wing. However, fullback Ben Volavola has been given a week off to allow his 7 broken nose more time to recover.

Manly halfback Matt Lucas is back for the game against Souths

If there are fireworks and the penalties are coming thick and fast, Souths will look to the boot of flyhalf Rohan Saifoloi, who already has contributed 231 points this season, to get them home. Manly have high hopes for their young hooker Dave Porecki, converted to No 2 after being voted Colt of the Year as a prop last season. Tip: Souths

EASTWOOD v WARRINGAH At Millner Field First round score: Eastwood 44-33 Plenty at stake here. A win would put gutsy Warringah in the play-offs, while a couple of bonus points could be good enough for a spot in the final eight. An Eastwood victory will clinch the minor premiership for the Woodies. Sizewise, Eastwood have a big advantage up front and Wallaby prop Benn Robinson gets a chance to push for a recall to Australia’s No 1 jumper. However the Warringah backs, who can conjure 7

Hepetema, who have been in Argentina with a NSW Barbarians squad that included ten University players. “We had to make 250 tackles against them in the first round,” said Malone. “It won’t be easy.” But can the Wicks cope with the relentless pressure applied by the University forwards? Coach Wade Kelly will have them pumped. Tip: University

Jared Barry’s power as a ball runner could trouble Warringah.

a try out of nothing, are quick and unpredictable, with fullback Dave Feltscheer providing a constant threat. “Warringah are a good young side that works hard. They’ve got nothing to lose.” is how Eastwood coach John Manenti sums it up. The Woodies have centre Mike McDougall back from the NSW Barbarians trip to Argentina on which Warringah hooker Luke Holmes was a colleague. Tip: Eastwood

RANDWICK v SYDNEY UNIVERSITY At Coogee Oval First round score: University 38-25 Such is the awesome depth of the Sydney University rugby machine that only three of the pack that steamrollered Gordon 95-7 last week have kept their spots for the clash against Randwick. Wallabies Dave Dennis and Paddy Ryan are among the newcomers as prop Laurie Weeks, secondrower Tom Boidin and flanker Trent Dyer have been retained. Wallaby Nick Phipps is the new halfback in a side with Super Rugby players galore. In an ominous warning to the incumbents, University coach Chris Malone says, “Form will dictate who gets picked next week.” Indeed, there are Wallabies and other Super Rugby players who become available. Desperately clinging to a spot in the final eight, Randwick will lift and get a boost from the return of flyhalf David Horwitz and centre Terrence 8

Should be Randwick flyhalf David Horwitz

WEST HARBOUR v NORTHERN SUBURBS At Concord Oval First round score: Wests 21-10 A must win game for Norths, who sit a point behind eighth placed Warringah. “Wests score a lot of points but also leak a lot of points,” says Norths coach Scott Fava. “We must stem the flow of their tries.” With Cam Crawford having shoulder surgery as a follow up to the NSW Barbarians tour of Argentina, Norths have stuck to the side beaten 23-15 by Manly. Boosted by the return of Rory Sidey in the centre, Wests get a further lift from the availability of Argentine tourists David Lolohea at prop and winger Alofa Alofa, who will zip over for a try given half a chance. Norths have more to play for because no matter what happens Wests will finish fifth. Watch for their Australian Under 20 flanker Michael Wells, a powerful young man with a high work rate. Tip: Norths

GORDON v EASTERN SUBURBS

Saturday but midway through the second half was only 23-22.

At Chatswood Oval

Tip: Easts

First round score: Easts 38-20 As if leaking 95 points last Saturday wasn’t bad enough, Gordon now face up to an Easts outfit currently sixth with Randwick, Warringah and Norths in hot pursuit. The Beasties will be boosted by the return of Wallabies Brendan McKibbin and Mitch Chapman, who have been in Argentina with the NSW Barbarians. “Brendan accelerates our game,” says coach Mark Bakewell. “He adds more cohesion.” Chapman, who has made two Wallaby tours without being capped, joined the Waratahs this season after playing in Japan for two years. The scoreline was 39-22 when Easts went down to Eastwood in a very physical game last

GAMES

At Merrylands RSL Rugby Park

Qualifying Finals SATURDAY AUGUST 24, SUNDAY AUGUST 25

First round score: Parramatta 35-25 Sadly, this game is purely academic, but the fierce rivalry of these neighbouring clubs could produce something worthwhile. Parramatta will be out to provide a fitting farewell to their coach Glen Christini, a true gentleman of the game who is heading home across the Tasman. If there is one thing Parramatta can do, it’s score spectacular tries. Sixty six of them for the season. This team oozes raw talent but lacks discipline. Hence their leaking of 92 tries.

Matches cannot be allocated to the venues until the positions on the table are finalised for all Grades on Saturday 17 August. First Grade venues announced on ABC TV approx. 4.55pm Sat, Aug 17.

Venues Saturday Aug 24 – TG Millner Saturday Aug 24 – Concord Oval Sunday Aug 25 – Manly Oval Sunday Aug 25 – Chatswood Oval

COLTS REPORT by Scott Killingworth

With the regular season out of the way one week earlier than those older grade counterparts, we now find twelve teams whittled down to eight. West Harbour pirates embarked on a stellar end of season run to the finals and finished on equal points with the eighth placed Warringah but the Rats scraped through thanks to having recorded one more win than the Pirates, who defeated them one week previously. This weekend sees all Qualifying Final matches hosted at Forshaw Rugby Park, home of the seventh placed Southern Districts Rebels. On Saturday the First Grade Finals kick-off at 1.10pm with the second placed Manly Marlins versus the third placed Northern Suburbs Shoremen. These sides met last week in a high scoring 54-31 match won by the home side out at Manly Oval and will today lock horns again, albeit this time on neutral territory. Both sides are renowned for their established playmakers. Manly possess the Australian U20s flyhalf Reece Hodge while Norths have their own Larkhamesque tall-and-wellrounded No. 10 in Josh Kay. Both of these players have performed consistently all season, so it will be up to their men up front to decide how much time with the ball in hand each of these quality ball distributors gets to enjoy. Match number two on Saturday is the other top four matchup, with first placed Sydney University locking horns with fourth placed Randwick.

who are lucky enough to enjoy a home ground advantage. These two sides last met in round eleven, with the Two Blues coming up victors 2219. The Rebels have welcomed back a host of schoolboy representative players since then and have steamrolled through the back end of the season, with victories over Norths and Warringah and a one point loss to the second placed Marlins. Both the Two Blues and the Rebels play attacking football off the back of turnovers won by their hardworking backrows and I tip this match to be the highest scoring of all the qualifying finals. Final match of the weekend is fifth placed Eastwood taking on eighth placed Warringah. The Rats have beaten Eastwood on both occasions this year, their last meeting being a 41-12 ambush at Rat Park in round eighteen. The Warringah outside backs ran riot out wide against the perplexed Eastwood defence and success for the Woodies this week will depend on their ability to quell the Warringah backline. EASTWOOD 36 V EASTS 10 Eastwood have stacked together three straight victories coming into the finals with a wave of momentum, finishing their regular season with a decisive victory over Eastern Suburbs. The Beasties took an early lead before work at the breakdown by flankers Tom Murphy and Hamish Hall paved the way for the Woodies backline to fire. Jackson Bird was the most notable of all the backs, scoring a try of his own as well as playing a part in three others.

The Galloping Greens commenced the season looking like the team to beat before a round nine loss at home to Uni opened up the floodgates for more losses after a previously undefeated start to the season. Randwick will have taken confidence from their win over the in-form Souths side last week and will need their big men like Tevita Vea and Jock Armstrong to step up if they are to be any chance of defeating this physically imposing Uni side that hasn't lost since round ten.

Other Round 17 Matches:

Then on Sunday we have day two of the Qualifying Finals, starting off with sixth placed Parramatta taking on the seventh placed Souths Rebels,

Commitment And Ambition Drive This Explosive Front-Rower

FAITOTOA ASA “There’s not many props who can hit hard, scrummage, ball play, make line breaks, offload and chase down centres,” says Randwick coach Wade Kelly of his explosive loosehead Faitotoa Asa. Watching ‘Toa’ in action, his love of the physical side of the game is evident but his turn of pace and ball handling do make him a standout in his position. The 26-year-old readily admits to being a frustrated back. “If I had the right body shape, I’d like to have been a flyhalf or centre,” he concedes, “but you’ve got to go with what you are. I just love running the ball when I can.” Originally from Wellington, New Zealand and of Samoan descent, he was trying to forge a career in rugby league with the Newcastle Knights in 2008 before answering a call from a struggling Penrith, and returning to the game he’d played at high school. Despite enjoying his three years at the foot of the mountains, he made a rugby decision to move to the Galloping Greens at the start of 2013. “I wanted to get the best training and coaching that l could and try to work my way up to the next level,” he explains. “Three of us came over; myself, Richie Aho and Junior Ta’avili and our goal was to play good footy for Randwick that would lead to something afterwards. Richie is now in France playing professionally so hopefully, if l can keep plugging away, something will come up soon.” Pace and handling skills aside, he remains a proud member of the front rowers union. Sticking your head in where it hurts is a role he simply relishes. “l love the battle up front and at scrum time. If it was out on the street it would be illegal and I've got the cauliflower ears to prove it!” he laughed. For coach Kelly, Toa embodies the spirit and culture he is trying to foster at a rejuvenated Coogee Oval. “The guy is all commitment,” he says. “He has driven from out West to training every week since November and hasn't missed a beat. If I was giving out contracts, I’d be interested in a prop who offered a fair bit more than scrummaging and had plenty of personality to go with it.” 25

The Bledisloe Cup was on display at Woollahra Oval last Saturday. Pictured holding ‘The Cup’ are Hon. Malcom Turnbull MP, who was a guest of Easts, and Eastern Suburbs President, Tony McQuillen.

James Leckie Referees 100 Shute Shield Games

At Concord Oval on August 3, James Leckie refereed his 100TH Shute Shield game which is a significant milestone. James commenced refereeing in 1995, following an injury which ended his playing days when a Colt, and refereed his first Shute Shield game in 2002. Leckie went on to referee on the IRB Sevens circuit and made his Super Rugby debut in 2006. His career includes four Test Matches, U19 World Cup final in Durban, finals of HK Sevens, Commonwealth Games Sevens and Shute Shield Grand Final. Congratulations to James Leckie who is pictured with his wife Anna on the day of his achievement.

WILSO’S WHISPERS by Bob Wilson

Another bloke who has been around Rugby all his life is Norths’ Don Felton. Don began as a ball boy from 1959 to 1965 in North's "Golden Era" when they had players like John Thornett, Les Austin, Andy Town, John "Sparrow" Dowse, Rod Phelps, Dennis Hughes and Jimmy Cross to name a few, all under the watch of that great man, the late Bon "Old Man" Andrews. He attended North Sydney Boys High School and gained Blues in both Rugby and Cricket while he played Junior Rugby for the Seaforth Pirates, Mosman and Lane Cove. Don played Colts for the club in 1972 and 1973 playing in North's only First Grade Colts team to win a Premiership, defeating St George in the Grand Final in 1973. After graduating to the Senior ranks he played mainly lower grades winning Four Premiership pewters, with his only First Grade appearance as a replacement at the old Concord Oval against Western Suburbs. Don coached numerous Colts sides in the 90’s as well as being a Manager and Colts Co-Ordinator until he became a touch judge in the late 90’s before taking on refereeing. In 1998 he was appointed Manager of the First Grade team which reached the Grand Final and also managed many other teams in the early 2000's. On top of this Don served on the Board of Directors in the mid 2000's and then it was back looking after the Colts. On top of Rugby, Don played 1st Grade cricket for Mosman and Manly while his brother Ian, who was also a 1st Grade cricketer, was involved with both Manly and Warringah as well as his brother Peter who is still down at Manly. Both Ian and Peter have been players, coaches, managers and served on the committee at their clubs. 28

A really true Rugby man, he has had the "Red and Black" in his blood all of his life having first being taken to the games by his father who followed Norths for a mighty long time and now Don’s son is equally passionate about Norths. The Felton name will be around North Sydney Oval for many more years to come. Still at Norths, another volunteer is Elizabeth Marsden. Elizabeth has been one of North’s most loyal supporters for the past 50 years. More importantly, she has been the timekeeper on sunny, windy, rainy, cold and hot days for 20 years. This is an amazing contribution to the club so it was only fitting that last Saturday she was asked to kick off in the First Grade fixture against Manly. Elizabeth, people like you are gold and very much appreciated. While he would have been proud of his son, Charlie’s First Grade debut for Randwick recently, John Wakim would have probably rather he had made it for the Beasties as John was a dynamo First Grade back-rower for Easts back in the 70’s. While on father and sons, my colleague Terry Smith, the experienced scribe and good bloke, mentioned last week about a couple that had played together. Well, back in 1983 former Easts prop, Andy Tyler and his son Neil Tyler, the long time Eastwood stalwart along with Bob Hancock and Steve Hancock all played 4th grade for Dundas Valley against Drummoyne at Drummoyne Oval on Easter Saturday. As an 18 year old Neil said the experience of playing with his father was something he will never forget, especially as he was packing against Drummoyne legend, Eddie Tindall in the scrums. Neil says “It was like my father and Eddie were both back in the 1960’s as in every scrum there was blood being lost”. If you have any stories or news please email to bobw@wireless2way.com.au
