Surely this must be a record for the Sydney competition. Taking the field for Warringah in last Saturday’s fourth grade game against West Harbour at Concord were two sets of father and sons – with Dave and Luke Preston propping on either side of the scrum. After playing his first game in years, dad Dave stuck around to fulfil his job as Warringah’s first grade team manager. The other father and son duo were John McCarthy, once a noted whistler and now President of the NSW Referees Association, and his son John Jr. And it would have been three fathers and sons if club president Mike Sheeran had been able to track down son Liam to join him. There was a frantic search early in the day for players so the Rats would not have to forfeit through lack of numbers. Also helping out the fourths was first grade coach Haig Sare, who once played for the Western Force and when another over-50, Chris Birch, came on as water boy, he stayed on the field as a replacement. Footnote: Warringah won 36-7. After scoring two tries in reserve grade, Nathan Trist took the field for the last 15 minutes in first grade of his 201st game with Sydney University against Southern Districts last Saturday. He pinched a try with an intercept in extra time and kicked the goal to lift his tally to 1036 in all grades, three better than Daniel Halangahu’s club record. Jingle of the week. Sung by the lusty lads of the West Harbour lower grades to the tune of the old song ‘Hit the Road, Jack’ as fly-half Jack Debreczeni lines up the ball, they chant “Kick the Goal, Jack.” As the ball sails between the posts, they sing, “It’s on the score.” With the Bledisloe Cup looming, who better than icon Mark Ella to be guest speaker at the Rugby Club lunch next Tuesday? Call 9247 3344 for tickets. By the way, did you know that affable Mark shed his Randwick-only tag when he had a run in fourth grade to help out Warringah while coaching there? Published by: Eric Spilsted Publishing PO Box 848, Lane Cove NSW 2066 Publisher/Editor: Jim Davis T: 9427 8879 | M: 0411 242 535 jim.davis@rugbynews.org

Warren Smith, a doyen among cricket coaches who discovered Michael Slater and Phillip Hughes, once described Charlie Wakim as one of the best fieldsmen he had ever seen. Ginger-haired Charlie, a batsman in first grade with University of NSW, switches to rugby with Randwick in the winter months. After scoring five tries in reserve grade, he was promoted to the firsts against Eastern Suburbs and got both of Randwick’s tries. “He weighs 45 kilos wringing wet, but he’s quick,” says Randwick coach Wade Kelly. Talking of Kelly, he will be back coaching the Galloping Greens in 2014. Sydney University’s Ollie Atkins, who has played for both the Waratahs and Western Force and has the necessary Scottish heritage, flew out unexpectedly this week with the goal of breaking into international rugby with Scotland. Whenever a player is about to make his first grade debut with Northern Suburbs, one of the champions of the past presents him with the jumper. John Thornett has done it. So have Al Baxter, Roy Prosser, Peter Carson and Reg Smith. Norths’ 32-14 upset of Randwick to be in eighth spot a point behind the Wicks was Scott Fava’s first win at Coogee since he started coaching in 2010. Unable to get a Super Rugby contract anywhere, Josh Holmes has taken a job with a courier company. Unbelievable. His try for Warringah against West Harbour last Saturday was his twelfth of the season. He deserves better. Cricket corner: According to the London Sunday Times, if either Shane Watson or Michael Clarke saw the other on fire, they wouldn’t so much be looking for a bucket of water as a can of petrol. Netball whiz Mo’onia Gerrard, who is aiming to bid for a spot in Australia’s Sevens rugby team for the Brazil Olympics in 2016, has been spotted at a couple of Warringah games at Rat Park, prompting speculation that she’ll turn out for the Rats rather than Sydney University where boy friend Dave Dennis plays. Mo’onia’s brother Mark has told the club he’ll have a run with Warringah when he completes his stint in Japan.

Norths’ Young Warrior Should Be the Next ‘Cab Off the Rank’

BEN MATWIJOW Debates in club rugby often rage around which players in the Shute Shield could be the next ‘cabs off the rank’ to make it in the professional arena. One name that has cropped up more than most in the last couple of years is that of Northern Suburbs’ loose forward Ben Matwijow. After growing up in Nelson Bay, 23-year-old Matwijow made the move to the big city in his teens to turn out for Eastwood colts before switching to North Sydney Oval in 2009 and was thrust straight into First Grade the next year. Some 68 games later, he is an integral part of the Red & Black’s engine room. “He has become a complete player in 2013 and this has made him a genuine option at both lock and no.6,” says Norths’ head coach Scott Fava. “Dominant ball carries and defence are a feature and his intelligence at the lineout leads the way for the rest of the pack. Ben has shown great form this year and was totally deserving of his place in the Western Force 22 against the British & Irish Lions.” That game against the Lions in June was Ben’s only reward on the higher stage thus far and came after a couple of seasons on the fringes of the Western Force training squad. It is a moment he will forever treasure. “You sort of have to pinch yourself that you actually got to play against the Lions,” he enthused. “To make your debut in front of 35,000 odd people playing against some of the greats in world rugby is an unbelievable feeling. It’s something I’ve been working towards for years so to finally achieve it was great but it makes you want to play a hell of a lot more of it.” At 198 cms and 115 kgs, he possesses an imposing frame, is in the best shape of his life and says he’s never been more ready to take on the next challenge. “I feel like I’m playing my best footy right now and I think being in a professional environment can only make me better. I just need to get that shot.” Scott Fava reckons it’s only a matter of time. “If any player is ready for Super Rugby, it is Ben Matwijow this year.” Taxi for Ben! - by Paul Cook Photo: www.seiserphotography.com

A few coaches worth talking about... by Jim Webster Some might think those people who have loads to say beforehand, yell and shout in the dressingrooms, endure several heart attacks each game but never get hurt, aren’t really worth talking about. But they are. And there have been some important happenings with our coaches this season, the most obvious being our new Wallaby coach, Ewen (Link) McKenzie. This writer was extremely pleased to see him called to the starting line, hopefully to inject a new playing style and culture into the Wallabies. Then came his 40-man squad for the Rugby Championship and among them was five-eighth Quade Cooper, who had been ditched by Robbie Deans, but is obviously going to be pivotal to the way the Wallabies play under McKenzie. Cooper may have defensive issues, but even as a second-half replacement he can initiate moves, and set up tries, that no other Australian is able to do. One thing he must learn, though, is to make adjustments to his rocket passes so that his teammates are running onto the ball and not scrambling to catch it, or missing it completely. But gaining more fluidity in the backline, with his talents and those of Will Genia, James O’Connor, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Israel Folau, is not McKenzie’s major issue. That will be trying to rebuild the scrum after the horrible mauling we suffered at the hands of the British & Irish Lions in the final Test. If anybody can fix the problem – whether it be replacing players or better grooming of their technique–then it would be cauliflower-eared McKenzie, who has more knowledge and experience in this area than almost anybody else. But Australia’s pack must never be humiliated like that again. Another coaching change which has been very important to those of us from the best state is having Michael Cheika at the reins of the Waratahs this past season. Even though the Waratahs finished ninth on the Super Rugby table they showed enough flair 5 to suggest that they’ll start climbing the ladder next season. Cheika brought a more open and dangerous style

into their attack and, if he can extract more fire and brimstone from the forwards, then you can bet they’ll go places in 2014. Who knows, they could even outperform the Brumbies… We are exposed so much to the coaches of the Wallabies and Super Rugby teams that we tend to forget those at the grassroots who provide the playing fodder for the representative coaches to feed on. You need constant reminders of the importance of the club coach and this occurred again recently with the disappointing announcement that Glen Christini had resigned as head coach of Parramatta and will finish up at the end of the season. Christini was recruited by the Two Blues at the start of the 2011 season in the hope of making them more competitive in the Sydney Premier competition and in just his second year he took them from bottom place to fifth position – and the second week of the semi-finals. This season they have again been a force to be reckoned with (beating Easts last weekend was another reminder) and anybody heading west to Merrylands RSL Rugby Park expects to come home battered and bruised and having been extended to the limits. In announcing his resignation, Christini said “it is with great sadness that I will be finishing with the club, so that I can return to New Zealand with my family to take up the country lifestyle for a while. “I stand by my comments that Parramatta will grow to be a super power within Australian rugby and I also feel that much of what I was brought here to do has been achieved. “The people at Parramatta Rugby Club are, and have always been, simply outstanding. The club can boast ‘character of people’ far superior to any club I have been involved with.” Christini went on to say that he would never return here to coach a rival club for “the passion I feel for Parramatta and the people involved is far too great to ever allow that to happen. I will be a Two Blue forever.” The club’s attack coach Gerrard Fasavalu will take over next season. 5

MATCH PREVIEWS

by Terry Smith

With two rounds of the Shute Shield remaining, it would take a brave man to predict the semi-finals in which the draw is 1 v 4, 2 v 3, 5 v 8 and 6 v 7. Step forward Mark Bakewell, coach of the Eastern Suburbs Beasties. As a player he was fearless, so typically Mark didn’t hesitate when asked to nominate how he thinks the draw will pan out. It will be Eastwood v Southern Districts, Sydney University v Manly, West Harbour v Warringah and Easts v Northern Suburbs. Randwick, currently seventh but due to finish with tough games against Southern Districts and Sydney University, are the ones to miss out, according to Bakewell. That would be a heart-breaker for the men in myrtle green who have lost three games after the bell. Haig Sare, coach of ninth placed Warringah, who are due to face Parramatta and Eastwood, admits, “We have to rely on other teams getting beaten.” Let’s look at how the contending clubs complete their campaign. 1. E astwood (68 points) v Easts (away), Warringah (home) 2. S ydney University (65) v Gordon (h), Randwick (a) 3. S outhern Districts (57) v Randwick (h), Manly (a) 4. Manly (56) v Norths (a), Southern Districts (h) 5. West Harbour (49) v Penrith (a), Norths (h) 6. E astern Suburbs (42) v Eastwood (h), Gordon (a) 7. Randwick (39) v Souths (a), Sydney University (h) 8. Northern Suburbs (38) v Manly (h), Wests (a) 9. Warringah (34) v Parramatta (h), Eastwood (a) 10. Parramatta (30) v Warringah (a), Penrith (h)

EASTERN SUBURBS v EASTWOOD At Woollahra Oval First round score: Easts 28-25 Table topping Eastwood suffered a blow on the eve of the play-offs when rising prop Jed Gillespie 7 broke his leg and will not play again this year. Now leading the Shute Shield by three points,

Locky McCaffrey returns for Eastwood.

the Woodies today face an Easts side which has posted a couple of notable victories over them in the last two years. The ABC TV cameras will be at this one which promises to be a hard fought struggle. “It will be a game of massive intensity,” promises Mark Bakewell, coach of Easts, who have won two of their last three games against the Woodies. Eastwood will have Locky McCaffrey back at No 8 as a follow up to a 70-28 romp against Gordon, while Easts will still carry some bruising from a 24-19 loss in which no less than six Easts players were forced from the field by a variety of injuries. A new face for the Beasties is centre James Field, a local junior who is back after a stint with the Canberra Vikings. The back-row clash between Hugh Perrett, Hugh Roach and Locky McCaffrey, of Eastwood, with Pauliasi Taumoepeau, Ryan Hodson and Andrew Shaw will be crucial. Tip: Eastwood 7

nowhere, the Two Blues produced a 24-19 upset of Eastern Suburbs. Today they head to Narrabeen to tackle an unchanged Warringah team which must win their remaining two games to stay in the hunt for the play-offs. It’s the same scenario for the Two Blues, whose injury toll has forced the call-up of prop Lui Sakaria, who has played in fourth grade for much of the year. Looking back to Parramatta’s 51-21 victory in the first round, Warringah coach Haig Sare says, “Our defence will be the key.” The Rats lack genuine size up front, but they have oodles of speed and lots of heart. Tip: Warringah

The clash of Norths centres Tuatara-Morrison (pictured) and Bill Meakes with their Manly opposites should be a highlight.

NORTHERN SUBURBS v MANLY At North Sydney Oval First round score: Manly 25-7 Like Bart Cummings preparing a horse for the Melbourne Cup, coach Phil Blake seems to be timing Manly’s lead-up to the play-offs to perfection. With giant Cadeyrn Neville and Tim Fairbrother returning, obviously Manly’s big pack today will attempt to overpower their rivals through the forwards as it did in their first round clash. Brian Sefanaia is back to act as a potent force in the centre for the Marlins. A win could enable Norths to leapfrog Randwick and Easts into fifth spot, so the men in red and black have plenty to play for. With skipper AJ Gilbert declared fit, Norths are unchanged, with in-form flanker Will Miller a key player. Tip: Manly

WARRINGAH v PARRAMATTA At Pittwater Rugby Park First round score: Parramatta 51-21 A week ago Parramatta looked to be dead and buried. They had lost six in a row to drop to tenth spot, gun player Dan Rawaqa had headed back to Fiji in a huff and coach Glen Christini announced he would not be here in 2014. Then, from out of 8

Sitaleki Timani: The Souths big man is due for a big game

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v RANDWICK At Forshaw Rugby Park First round score: Randwick 33-25 Randwick’s No 10 jumper has been worn by a host of champions, headed by Mark Ella. Today it is handed to Marc Koteczky, who loves to attack. Growing up in Terrigal, he played Colts for Randwick after leaving Riverview, had a stint at Easts and now is back with his old club. It is the only change in the team beaten 32-14 by Norths. With Kane Douglas on Wallaby duty, Souths, licking their wounds after a 48-6 loss to Sydney University, have named Sita Timani and Dan Faeafa in the second-row. Obviously they will look to fly-half Rohan Safoloi to increase his season’s points tally from 213. Tip: Southern Districts

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY v GORDON

PENRITH v WEST HARBOUR

At University Oval

At Nepean Rugby Park

First round score: University 49-10

First round score: Wests 28-21

Premiers University are without skipper Tim Davidson, who is attending sister Annie’s wedding, while second-rower Ollie Atkins has headed off to Scotland in a bid to further his rugby career. Hugo Dessens is the new No 8 and Sam Jeffries takes over from Atkins.

West Harbour skipper Tom Games returns at No 6 in the starting side after an absence of six weeks with a knee injury, while Adam Nixon is a new prop in a team which has exceeded all expectations to be in fifth place.

Gordon are a young side with lots of enthusiasm but University looked menacing in demolishing Southern Districts 48-6. Tip: Sydney University

next WEEK’s

GAMES Round 18

SATURDAY, AUGUST 17 Manly v Southern Districts at Manly Oval (ABC TV Game) Eastwood v Warringah at TG Millner Field Parramatta v Penrith at Merrylands RSL Rugby Park

Nua Alone has been named to play in the centre in case Wallaby James O’Connor isn’t cleared for this game against Penrith at Nepean Rugby Park. Despite scoring five tries, they were sunk 44-33 last Saturday by Warringah, for whom Dave Harvey kicked eight out of eight.

West Harbour v Northern Suburbs at Concord Oval Randwick v Sydney University at Coogee Oval Gordon v Eastern Suburbs at Chatswood Oval

COLTS REPORT by Scott Killingworth

The First Grade Colts premiership, or W. McMahon Memorial Shield as it’s officially titled, is as we all know made up of players who this year are twenty years of age or under. When somebody is twenty and as fit as one must be to play at this level, it’s hard to blame them if they want to enjoy the fruits of being young, handsome and athletic and blow some steam at their local watering hole. However, it’s the sides that can band together and agree to abstain from those activities until the end of the season who will prove to be the biggest threats during the finals. With the corresponding round of the final Shute Shield round having already been played by Colts on the first weekend of July, there remains just today’s round of regular season rugby in the 2013 Colts competition. There are nine sides with a mathematical possibility of making the Colts First Grade Finals. Sydney Uni, Manly, Norths, Randwick, Eastwood and Souths are all assured of a spot in the top eight, whilst Parramatta and Warringah duke it out this weekend in an all important match that decides who will take the eighth spot into the finals. Warringah just need to win against the Two Blues to ensure themselves of eighth spot on the table. Should they lose, it opens the door for the late blooming West Harbour Pirates, who had a big win over the Rats last week. Both Parramatta and Warringah possess electrifying pace out wide and it will be interesting to see prolific try-scoring machine, Parramatta's Luke Casey marking up on the wing against Warringah's elusive equivalent Max Jones. Kickoff for this decisive match is 3pm at Merrylands RSL Rugby Park. Eastwood 48 V Gordon 22 Eastwood have re-gathered their winning ways, notching up back to back wins after a convincing performance against Gordon last weekend. Gordon troubled Eastwood at the breakdown, with captain Jack Maguire leading from the front and ensuring that the ball fed to Eastwood's dynamic

backline was slow early on. Despite the number of turnovers achieved by the resilient Highlanders backrow, there was nothing they could do to counter the Woodies backline when given a hint of space. Flyhalf Matt Parkinson enjoyed a hat-trick of tries to add to his already impressive season total. Matt's tally just pipped that of scrumhalf and tryscoring machine Matt Gonzalez, who picked up a double of his own before being carried off the field with an injury. Matt is a lynch pin of the Eastwood team and his coach and team mates will cross their fingers that he will be right for this weekend and beyond. Man of the match was barnstorming centre Zac Atallah, whose offloads, decisive passing and precise running game made him responsible for many of the Eastwood tries. Eastwood must win this weekend to ensure themselves of fifth spot on the table. That would book them a date with whoever takes eighth out of the possible candidates of Warringah and West Harbour. In Other Matches Warringah's late surge to the finals took a hit when they went down 21-55 against West Harbour, whose might up front was too good for an injury depleted Rats forward pack who have suffered the loss of gargantuan Costan Toumazos with a season ending knee injury. This was a crucial match for both sides and one that kept the Pirates in the hunt for a finals berth. Penrith went down to the currently unstoppable Marlins 20-76. Northern Suburbs sent a clear message to all sides that they will be a force to be reckoned with come finals time, demolishing third placed Randwick 56-12. Parramatta's push to the finals took a hit when they were upset by a spritely Eastern Suburbs 24-18. Tips for this week: Warringah, West Harbour, Manly, Southern Districts, Sydney University, Eastwood Could all coaches please submit match reports to Scottkill@outlook.com 19

Fathers & Sons Play together… and Win!

Last Saturday, Warringah fourth grade player numbers had to be bolstered to take on West Harbour. Answering the Rats call led to the rarity of two sets of father & son playing together. L to R: John McCarthy Jnr, John McCarthy Snr (current NSW Referees President), Dave Preston and son Luke Preston. And Warringah won, 36 to Wests 7. Can’t get the smiles off their faces. Nathan Trist sets new Sydney Uni points scoring record

Nathan Trist needed 5 points to break Daniel Halangahu’s club point scoring record of 1033. Picking up a loose ball Trist (pictured) streaked away to score on the bell. He also converted to set a new record for Most Points Scored ever by a Sydney Uni player. His total at this time is 1036 points, which includes 140 tries. Photo: www.seiserphotography.com

WILSO’S WHISPERS by Bob Wilson

Wallaby great and former NSW Waratahs captain Tim Gavin was the Guest Speaker at the Mid North Coast Rugby Luncheon last Friday. Gav along with Inside Rugby Editor and Fox Sports panelist, Mark Cashman who was Master of Ceremonies, were both magnificent and entertained everyone throughout a very enjoyable and extremely long luncheon. NSWRU CEO, Bruce Worboys was also sensational when he addressed the capacity crowd. Also in attendance was ARU Development Manager, John Searl plus local politicians Stephen Bromhead, MP & Nationals Member for Myall Lakes and Dr. David Gillespie, Nationals Candidate for the Federal seat of Lyne, both true Rugby enthusiasts, who spent the afternoon enjoying themselves. As I reported a few weeks ago that Eastwood stalwart, Neil “Monster” Tyler just loves a social function. Well he drove up the coast for the luncheon and then headed back home, truly amazing.

The Mid North Coast Rugby Union’s Major Sponsor, Tim Ford owner of Tallwoods & Harrington Golf Courses was in attendance and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon while clubs such as Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Hastings Valley, Kempsey, Forster-Tuncurry, Wallamba, Manning River and Myall Coast attended along with many rugby supporters from up and down the coast. The President of the MNCRU Zone, Matt Shannon closed the official proceedings while the majority of people stayed well into the night and some in particular were still going the next morning. Won’t mention what club they were from but they were lucky their First Grade side had the bye last Saturday. Too bad about their Reserve Grade side who had to play. Many thanks to the MNCRU clubs as well as the ARU, NSWRU, Eastern Suburbs and Eastwood Rugby Clubs, Tallwoods Golf Club and everyone for their support while enough cannot be said about the contribution from both Tim Gavin and Mark Cashman that made the luncheon very successful.

Gav spoke about his early days at Easts Colts on leaving The Scots College and that former Wallaby & NSW Coach, Greg Smith was his mentor from the very first days at Woollahra and then later in Grade and Representative Rugby. He remembered the weekend Greg aka “The Wig” actually drove west of Anzac Parade and out to his home at Cumnock back in the 90’s. Now that was a real culture shock for Greg Smith. Casho interviewed Adam McCormack, Captain of the Mid North Coast side who also played for the NSW Country Cockatoo’s and the Combined NSW & Queensland Country team that took on the British & Irish Lions in Newcastle. Adam said the team camp in the week leading up to playing the Lions was truly unbelievable and a great experience. Adam emphasized how great a leader and person captain, Tim Davidson the Sydney University skipper was. He learnt and appreciated what Tim had to offer which he will never forget. 28
