EASTERN SUBURBS V GORDON RUGBY NEWS 90th BIRTHDAY YEAR

SUPPORTING JUNIOR RUGBY

BarflyBuzz by Terry Smith

Amy Perrett, who soon heads off to Moscow to act as a referee in the IRB Women’s Sevens World Cup as a follow up to earlier trips to the Dubai and Houston Sevens, was a finalist in Official of the Year in the NSW Community Sports Awards held at Parliament House last week. At the function, another rugby identity Mick Clay was awarded a medal in recognition of his long service to the game. In 1975, Mick established the Liverpool Rugby Club and has done monumental work for the Subbies. You’ll spot him at all Super Rugby and Test matches in Sydney as a volunteer match official. Still on Amy Perrett, she and twin brother Paul were little more than tiny tots when they joined the Eastwood ballboys on the touchline and later were on duty collecting the balls in the 2003 World Cup. By then Amy was playing rugby with the boys until her 12th birthday, the cut-off mark for girls. If she wanted to stay actively involved in rugby, there was only one thing left – become a referee. Now an IRB development referee, Amy has charge of Premier Rugby lower grades plus Colts and shrugs it off with a smile when some unsuspecting player utters a curse or two in her hearing. This delightful young lady, a Bachelor of Nursing who works as a carer, has just announced her engagement to Craig Vallely, a non rugby player. Her goal is to one day referee a First Grade game. A big name player was dropped to reserve grade after missing training and failing to ring the club with an explanation. Recalled to first grade last Saturday, he swept in for two tries. Mark Bakewell, coach of the Easts Beasties, will be back from his travels with the Tongan national team in time for the game against Gordon at Woollahra next Saturday, which has been put Published by: Eric Spilsted Publishing PO Box 848, Lane Cove NSW 2066 Publisher/Editor: Jim Davis T: 9427 8879 | M: 0411 242 535 jim.davis@rugbynews.org

back from today to give the ABC a game to televise on the Bye long weekend. Tonga beat Japan last weekend in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup and now have a game in America. Saturdays for Penrith coach Teki Tuipolotu start early when he watches sons Mattius and Emanuel turn out for the Blacktown Scorpions Under 7s. Then a quick dash to where Penrith are playing so the maestro, who won 54 Test caps with his native Tonga, can take the field if any of the lower grades are a player short. A quick shower and Teki gets the first graders ready. Penrith wouldn’t be Penrith without the Tuipolotu boys. Teki’s twin brother Ben coaches the reserve grade team, while other brothers Sesi and King play in fourth grade, with King doubling as coach. Surely nobody can top 78 games in Colts, a feat achieved by winger-fullback Glenn Stuart for the Parramatta club. Not only that, he suffered a broken arm, leg, wrist and forearm in four of the games. Puzzled how he still could play so many? Simple. Each of the injuries occurred in the last game of the season. We hear the Rebels refused to clear a well known player to take part in a Shute Shield game last Saturday because they wanted him to attend the club ball in Melbourne that night. Randwick’s reserve graders last Saturday included Matthew Murray, Jake Rutherford, Will Boneham and Sean Picone, sons of club notables from the eighties. Oddly enough, Jake, Will and Sean play in the same position filled by dads Stu, Gavin and Joe. Not Matt, though. He is an outside back, a long way from the front-row where dad Mick Murray was a Wallaby prop. Would you jump in your car at Coffs Harbour, drive to Sydney for the Back to Eastwood day and head home from Millner Field that night? Bryant ‘Cecil’ Felthon, a coach/team manager at the Woodies thirty years ago, did this last Saturday. His wife drove home. That’s rugby.

Just 23, his goal each week is to be a prime factor at the breakdown

RYAN HODSON When the Golden Bears of the University of California won the American Collegiate Rugby Championship in 2011, coach Jack Clark had a special word for an exchange student from Australia named Ryan Hodson. “He is among the hardest men to have played at Cal,” Clark declared. “First and foremost a team man, Ryan puts up his hand for the most difficult bits of work.” Those of us who saw Hodson’s driving play at flanker when Easts upset competition leaders Eastwood last Saturday know what he is talking about. His efforts drew praise from Michael Lipman, the stand-in coach of the Beasties who won 10 caps for England as a flanker. Surely the ultimate accolade. Hodson, who grew up at Cottesloe in Perth, got a taste of Super Rugby last year when he came off the bench three times for the Melbourne Rebels in between playing for Manly. “I loved it,” he says. This year he switched to Easts because he saw more opportunity there for a back rower. “My goal each week is to be a prime factor at the breakdown,” says this 23–year-old who bristles with energy. He stands 188cm and would like to lift his weight from exactly 100kg to 104. Like every young flanker, Hodson watches All Black skipper Richie McCaw whenever he bobs up on TV, but if he could be another player it would be Adam Thomson, the dynamic ball runner who plays for the Highlanders. Surely a Super Rugby province will snap him up next season. A glutton for work, Ryan has at least three gym sessions a week on top of training with Easts and hunting for a job in the financial market, with a preference for stock-broking. He shares an apartment in Redfern (“close to the beach, the city and the airport’’) with a couple of mates from Perth and loves to watch all sports when he isn’t out looking for a decent wave at Tamarama or Coogee. His ultimate goal is to play overseas after a making his mark in Super Rugby. And ladies, Ryan is unattached. “No missus at the moment,” he says. - by Terry Smith Photo: www.seiserphotography.com

Invited to serve on the International Rugby Board Hall of Fame induction panel by a very humbled Jim Webster The British & Irish Lions are almost on our doorstep!! In fact, they begin their tour today in Hong Kong against the Barbarians, before heading for our shores. Before they arrive, I must reveal with some modesty that I’ve been having much to do with some other Lions these past few weeks. It’s because, quite out of the blue, your writer was invited by the International Rugby Board to serve on the induction panel for the Hall of Fame. I’m the only Australian ever invited onto the panel, which is chaired by IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset, of France. This means that someone who proudly boasts of having played for the Dirty Reds of Drummoyne and later one of the world’s oldest rugby clubs, London’s Streatham-Croydon – but not having gone much higher – has found himself mixing with some of the game’s true royalty. Other panel members include Gerald Davies, the famous Welsh winger who won three Grand Slams and also made Lions tours in 1968 & 1971 (often touted as being the best winger in history); and Nigel Starmer-Smith, the England scrumhalf and now a rugby commentator and journalist. Other members are Norman Mair (Scotland), Don Cameron (New Zealand), Henri Garcia (France) and Pablo Mamone (Argentina). Secretary Chris Rae also serves on the panel. The newest panel members are writer & broadcaster Chris Thau, who played centre for Scotland and also toured with the Lions; and yours truly, who was chief rugby writer for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald for nearly 30 years until my retirement in 1989, when Greg Growden took over. I was privileged to tour with the Wallabies to Britain, France & Canada (1966-67), New Zealand (1978), Fiji (1984) and also be with them on the historymaking Grand Slam tour to Britain (1984). I still 5 write regularly on rugby for various publications, especially Rugby News, take tour groups to the Rugby World Cup and when the Wallabies go on

tour. With Gullivers, I’m currently planning a tour to the 2015 RWC. I’m also the author or co-author of nine books, including the autobiography of Simon Poidevin and I assisted in Rod Macqueen’s autobiography. It is indeed a rare honour to be asked to join the Hall of Fame induction panel and I was very humbled when approached by the IRB. Put simply, it’s the highest recognition any journalist or broadcaster could ever receive from the game that we all love so passionately. As for the Hall of Fame, only six Australians have been inducted. They are the late Dr Roger Vanderfield, Sir Nicholas Shehadie, Bob Dwyer, Rod Macqueen and Nick Farr-Jones, who were all inducted in a block in 2011, and John Eales, the first of our inductees in 2007. Yes, only six of them! I’m not at liberty to divulge any more about the workings of the Hall of Fame, other than to say that the visit by the Lions would most likely be as good a time as any to induct any further Wallabies or Lions thought worthy of induction. Don’t even begin to imagine who the next inductees might be from our shores, because your pen will run out of ink writing down all the names that quickly come to mind. Then again inductees do not necessarily have to be players. Teams, administrators, coaches, referees, media and rugby personalities are all considered, based on their outstanding contribution to the game. The main condition is that they must be retired from playing and coaching at international level for at least three years. Many of those already in the Hall of Fame are names with which you will not be familiar. For instance, the most recent inductees are Fijian sevens maestro Waisele Serevi and, before him, the late Vladimir Ilyushin, a legend in Russian rugby and aviation. But with an Aussie on the induction panel….who knows, we might see a few more from Down Under on the list... 5

Sydney Premier Rugby

MATCH PREVIEWS

by Terry Smith

Kurtley Beale is back in club rugby with Randwick to get his career on track and Warringah’s pointscoring whiz Dave Harvey dropped for defensive lapses. These are the biggest talking points as an intriguing Shute Shield series reaches the halfway point. It isn’t that long ago that Harvey won the Catchpole Medal and was piling up the points in Super Rugby for the Western Force. “Just slot in and do what you think,” will be coach Wade Kelly’s simple instruction to Beale before the troubled Wallaby pulls on the No. 15 myrtle green jumper in today’s big clash with Premiers Sydney University at University Oval. Beale could not have been facing a tougher task as University have recovered from a sluggish start to win their last four games and climb back to a share of fourth place. In a stunning achievement, Randwick have lost only one game in seven grades in four weeks to jump to the top of the Club Championship. “It’s a reality check for us,” says Kelly, who has done a remarkable job rebuilding the famous old club. “University come with a defensive pressure no other team can match.” He is full of praise for the support he has been given by such Randwick icons as Simon Poidevin, Jeff Sayle and Bob Dwyer. Round nine is an intriguing one. Northern Suburbs, seeking to boost their attacking prowess, take their home game against West Harbour to Blue Tongue Stadium at Gosford on Sunday, while Warringah bid to plug the holes in their defence when they play competition leaders Eastwood at Rat Park. In spite of their 28-25 loss to Easts, the Woodies (32 points) still lead the Shute Shield series by two points from Manly, with Southern Districts next on 27, followed by Sydney University and West Harbour (26), Randwick (23 and Parramatta and Easts (20). Then come Norths (19) and Warringah (18).

Southern Districts v Manly At Forshaw Park

Winger Alex Gibbon with five tries has been a good finisher for Souths.

the only alteration in the Southern Districts team beaten 33-25 by Randwick is the loss of centre Denny Godinet, who turned his ankle on the cricket pitch area at Coogee. Filimu Finau takes his spot. Hit by a heavy penalty count, Souths were on Struggle Street for much of the match, making 300-plus tackles while Randwick needed just over 100. The Marlins are facing a tough task in what should be a ferocious battle in the forwards, according to coach Phil Blake. “Souths are one of the heavyweights of the competition and doubly hard to beat at home. What’s more, they’re coming off two losses.” A danger man to Manly could be flyhalf Rohan Saifoloi, who tops the Shute Shield point scorers with 85 and has caught the eye of a French club. Tip: Souths

Warringah v Eastwood At Pittwater Rugby Park Young coach Haig Sare has taken the bold step of dropping superboot Dave Harvey amid a number of changes in a Warringah side which has suffered three straight losses because of brittle defence. “We’ve got to get some pride back in the jersey,” he said. Harvey’s place at flyhalf is taken by Scott Bradley, who is anything but tackle-shy. Flanker Mark Porpiglia is dropped for James Casey, prop Wayne Borsak is replaced by Richard Southan and flanker Sam Ward is another casualty. Pierce Howell moves from No. 8 to take his spot, making way for James King, of the Rebels. Eastwood hooker Hugh Roach has been rushed into the Western Force team to play the British and Irish Lions in Wednesday’s tour opener in Perth. The chance of a lifetime for this rising young player. Todd Pearce takes his place. Warringah’s brittle defence has resulted in three straight losses and they aren’t helped by Eastwood coming off a 28-25 loss to Easts, in which they were guilty of oodles of errors.

Parramatta injury update: Tom Woods will come off the bench in today’s local derby and skipper Andrew Cox will be back in the following game against Northern Suburbs. However, Dan Yakopo will be out for four to six weeks with a broken thumb. Penrith’s youngsters showed plenty of enthusiasm to score three tries against West Harbour but enterprising Parramatta should have too many guns. Tip: Parramatta

Sydney University v Randwick At University Oval The two form teams in the competition and Kurtley Beale the cherry on the cake as he plays fullback in the sylvan setting of University Oval. What rugby nut could ask for more on a Saturday afternoon? Skipper Tim Davidson has been freed by the Rebels to lead the Students, who have won four on the trot. Coach Wade Kelly describes today’s game as a reality check and has huge wraps on University’s defensive pressure. He is giving Beale carte blanche to unleash his remarkable skills.

Norths halfback, Tim Duchesne gets the nod due to his sharp running game.

Norths will be without key forward Ben Matwijow and winger Corey Brown, who have been recruited by the Western Force team to play against the British and Irish Lions in Wednesday’s tour opener, for this Sunday game in Gosford. With only nine tries in their losses to Southern Districts, Sydney University, Randwick and Manly in their last four games, coach Scott Fava says: “We’ve got to get more points on the board.” Hence the choice of Tim Duchesne, who has a sharper running game rather than incumbent Liam Walker, at halfback. Easts will be coming off a reverberating 28-25 disposal of competition leaders Eastwood which lifted them into a share of seventh place with Norths. With Waratahs John Ulugia and Mitch Chapman due back at the finish of Super Rugby, Easts will have a power pack when things get down to the nitty gritty of the play-offs. Back rowers Ryan Hodson and Anthony Shaw were special heroes when Eastwood were tipped out at their home ground. Gordon have a habit of falling away in the second half. Tip: Easts

COLTS REPORT by Scott Killingworth

It’s destined to be the match of the season this weekend when the undefeated Randwick Colts 1 team host the also undefeated Sydney University at Coogee Oval. Randwick defeated Souths at Forshaw Park last week, helped by the flawless finishing skills of winger Jack Pennington and the bustling runs of blindside flanker David Vea, who picked up a well earned double. On the other end of this tussle is Sydney University. The students produced a clinical performance against a Highlanders side that usually pride themselves on defence, winning 64-6. Both sides have forward packs that wouldn’t look out of place if swapped for their clubs Shute Shield counterparts as well as outside backs that can turn a game on it’s head in a matter of seconds. The number of boys in the Australian Under 20s team who are current members of Sydney First Grade Colts teams is testimony to the strength of this year’s competition, with five players from Randwick, Manly and Sydney Uni headed to France this week. Warringah 30 V Parramatta 25 The Warringah Rats are now two wins in a row after an exciting finish at Rat Park last weekend. Parramatta had narrowly lost to Eastern Suburbs by three points one week earlier and were keen to revamp their hot form they’d experienced in weeks prior that featured wins over Wests, Gordon and Eastwood in successive Rounds. Warringah Flanker Willis Casey had his best match of the season so far, menacing the Two Blues breakdown for the entire match. Willis’ older brother James has enjoyed some game time in Warringah First Grade this year and one assumes that perhaps some day the Casey brothers may be able to emulate the Broome brothers of Gordon First Grade and feature in the same Shute Shield backrow. Two early Warringah penalty goals provided them an early lead before Parramatta replied with two swift tries against the run of play.

Warringah Centre Ben Scanlan proved to be a handful for the Parramatta defence throughout the match, showing glimpses of a vintage Stirling Mortlock when he ran upright onto the ball at speed to bust the Two Blues defensive line on numerous occasions. Parramatta levelled the scores at 25 all with five minutes remaining; both forward packs nigh on breathless towards the back end of a match that featured contests at nearly every breakdown. The fitness of the Rats forward pack won through and they were rewarded with some valuable territory in the dying minutes of the match. Seagulling hooker Zac Jones received the ball in the corner of the field and used his powerful frame to muscle over the try line and score the winning points in one of the most exciting finishes of the season so far. Easts 17 V Eastwood 46 Like Warringah, whom they face this round, Eastwood became two wins on the trot last week after a convincing win over Easts at Woolahra Oval. Eastwood are beginning to find some red hot form after a difficult start to the season and their backs have seemed to develop a knack for turning minor opportunities into points. Angus McCaffrey performed the standout play of the match when he won a lineout on halfway, dummied past some bewildered defenders and stepped the fullback to score in the corner. McCaffrey scored another try not long after when he received a pass from a rampaging Matteo Pettenon, who is shaping up to be one of the form No. 8’s of the competition. Norths 10 V Manly 48 The match began with a very physical opening few minutes, Norths remained camped in the Marlins half and applied much sustained pressure before being interrupted when a nifty Manly counter attack put winger Darren Pinkerton into to score untouched from 50m out. Flyhalf Reece Hodge was rewarded for his composure in attack and precision with the boot this season when he was given the late call up mid-week for the Australian Under20s team to leave for France (Continued on Page 22)

this week. Usual halfback Fabian Natoli showed his versatility by filling the large boots left by Reece as he became the focal point of nearly all of the Marlins attacking raids throughout the match. Marlins loosehead prop Rory O’Connor showed great fitness when he backed up a far reaching linebreak from one of his speedy backs to be brought down a few metres short of the line. Manly scored off the following phase and converted from in front to make the score 12-0 after ten minutes. The most spectacular try of this match occurred a few minutes later when Fabian Natoli threw a cut out pass to put powerful centre Benson Fakai into space. Benson broke numerous tackles before offloading to his outside centre Ryan Squires to score under the posts. The Manly backline seemed to not be able 22

to put a foot wrong, with every single cut out pass or chip and chase seeming to stick throughout the match. Interestingly, the Marlins gargantuan No. 8 Vinnie Baranyi closed out the final ten minutes of the match at flyhalf, something I’m told he has done for the past two weeks. Call it what it really is

Sydney Premier Rugby With more than 65% of Test and Super Rugby players in Australia coming from Sydney Premier Rugby competition clubs, this really is the Premier Rugby competition. And what better way to enjoy Premier Rugby than at the grounds, supporting your local team. SYDNEY RUGBY UNION.

Penrith Rugby being innovative and practical as it works to turn the club around By Brendan Bradford On field results suggest the Penrith Emus are doing it tough at the moment, but situated in one of the fastest growing areas in Australia and with plenty of willing people working behind the scenes, the platform is being laid to turn the club’s fortunes around. From junior recruitment to TAFE courses and employment support, President Jim Hook says Penrith is building for the future both on and off the field. “Our club represents the Greater Western Sydney region which is very diverse in terms of demographic and in about 10 or 12 years, we’ll be looking at a population in excess of four million, which is bigger than Brisbane,” he explains. “It’s very much a growth area and we want to be the pathway club for all these kids out West to go to Super Rugby and beyond.” League, AFL and soccer are investing heavily in the hotly contested junior sporting market of Western Sydney and Penrith has largely had to go it alone in creating junior “pathways” with an eye to increased recruitment and retention of young players. “The club has aligned itself with junior development and is working very closely with the 36 junior teams – seven Age teams will represent the Penrith District Junior Rugby Union at the Junior State Championships on the long weekend – and we’re also developing school clinics to draw from the strong schoolboys’ competition as well,” says Hook. “We don’t have the finances to go out and contract all those young players, so we have to provide an attractive alternative for them to play rugby in Western Sydney where their roots are.” Unable to afford marquee players or provide state of the art training facilities on their “shoestring” budget, the coaches and directors had to look closely at what they could offer and what they were trying to achieve. Essential to this was tapping into the diverse cultural and socio-economic make-up of the club and its community. “We’re running certificate two and three IT courses through Richmond TAFE which builds that club togetherness we’re trying to achieve,” Hook 25 explains. “We’ve also got job assistance, resume support, application and interview skills, food banks

Penrith RFC President, Jim Hook (pictured) has confirmed the club is negotiating with the Council for a new lease and facilities upgrade.

for those people who might be in difficult circumstances and we’re working on budgeting and personal finances too. “Those are some of the social elements of what we’re doing which is very much about community development and supporting our people. It’s not just about rugby and I think the cultural support will be there for the long term and it’s relevant to the development of our juniors as well.” On the field, the club has access to physios and medical staff through an agreement with a local gym and is attempting to increase the media profile of rugby through a partnership with the Western Weekender newspaper. Starting “behind square one” in 2013 after a raft of players left in the offseason, the Emus have had to rebuild a first grade side and are still seeking improvement. While Hook admits people will look at on field results to judge success, he stresses the long term element of what they’re trying to achieve. “We weren’t able to lock away the win against West Harbour last weekend, but our reserve grade won fairly convincingly,” he says “The true measurement won’t be for another year or two when we see the progression through the ranks of some of those junior players.” Note: Waratahs Captain Dave Dennis was a Penrith Junior. 25

A new Sydney University leader emerging?

TOM BOIDIN Sydney University aficionados think Tom Boidin was unofficially anointed as successor to Tim Davidson as Sydney University captain when chosen to lead the Students against Gordon at the age of 23 in only his ninth appearance in first grade last Saturday. Davidson has had the job seemingly forever, leading the men in blue and gold to a string of premierships, but the time must be approaching when he steps down. In another two or three years perhaps. University coach Chris Malone says: “Davo has been fantastic for about 10 years but at some time we’ve got to blood someone into the role. Tom Boidin has got a very level head, he’s determined and he’s a hard worker. Benn Melrose is another young guy who could fill the role.” Well, who is Tom Boidin? He is a flanker standing 193cm and tipping the scales at 103 kilos, almost identical to Davidson. Tom came to Uni from St Patrick’s College and needs to pass one subject for his degree in Civil Structural Engineering. He captained Sydney Uni to a first grade Colts premiership in 2010 as a prelude to a stint with the Brumbies Runners. Last year was a write-off as Tom twice underwent surgery for a knee injury. “If you’re a loose forward, you’ve got to put in the hard work,” said Boidin, who backs club training on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with four morning workouts in the gym supervised by Tim Laea and teammate Tom Carter. He was a big John Eales fan growing up and never misses a chance to watch Keiran Read, the All Black loose forward who plays for the Crusaders. His other passions are golf (spurning woods, he uses a four-iron off the tee at par-fours and fives at Bexley, where he plays off 15) and watching Quentin Tarantino movies. Tom says Tim Davidson has been a great mentor to him on and off the field, explaining, “He gets you up for every game with the way he works and cleans out. It’s a bit of an honour to have been compared to him.” - by Terry Smith Photo: www.seiserphotography.com

WILSO’S WHISPERS Easts second rower, Phil Mathers has been playing with Italian club, Petrarca Padova which boast David Campese, Michael Cheika and David Knox as past members. He has had a great year and actually turned down another year there as well as a contract with ProD2 in France to return home to work with his brother’s construction company, Churchill Group and will be back at the Beasties next week. He should be ready to go as he has developed a serious appetite for pasta and has learnt the conversational basics of Italian but this could be a real concern when he returns to Woollahra as he is used to regularly greeting his team mates with a kiss on each cheek. I hope he doesn’t greet Coach, Mark Bakewell like that when walks into the Beasties Rugby Club on his return. He is right into the pasta and Friday for lunch is a regular occurrence with some of his fellow players. Each week the players or their mums cook a new dish for lunch which usually lasts 3-4 hours. Also, the club cameraman takes a few out on his gondola (not a tourist gondola but the same paddle system) in Venice, as he grew up on the canals, so he shows them around the local spots including a restaurant that's 400 years old. Phil will be well and truly welcomed back at Easts next week. Former Easts hooker, Tom Coolican was recently selected in the USA Eagles Squad. After completing his Law Degree Tom left to play for New York Athletic Club and has obviously impressed the Eagles selectors. It will be a big test for Randwick today when they take on the leading club over many years, the strong Sydney University club, in both Grade and Colts. New Head coach, Wade Kelly and Director of Coaching, Luke Callen along with their staff, have put the club back to being a leading contender again. They have hit the lead in the Club Championship from the Students, with the club having won twenty nine games from thirty one encounters in the last four weeks in both Grade and Colts. The First Grade Colts are undefeated so today’s matches will separate the men from boys. Callen who came through the Randwick Juniors, Colts and Grade is the ideal person for the job, as he will also help bring a tremendous spirit to the ‘Wicks. My only concern is I hope the halfbacks can throw a longer pass than the former scrumhalf did 28

by Bob Wilson

in his glory days. Only joking Luke, keep it going mate! Randwick’s Peter Wright who joined the ‘Wicks from that great Rugby nursery, Waverley College and played Colts and then went onto the Senior Grades played his 200th game for the club a few weeks ago. His mates are not sure of his age but they reckon it is between 18 and 38 years old. Well done Wrighty ! Randwick’s long time hooker, Nio Halangahu has finally taken himself off the market by popping the big question to his lovely girlfriend. From all reports Nio is batting well above his weight. His lovely fiancée is Jacqueline Tate, who hails from Essex, and she met Nio in South Africa when he was playing for the Southern Kings. Congratulations to both of you! Rumour has it that Israel Folau has agreed to a new one year deal with the NSW Waratahs that will be confirmed shortly while former Wallaby and NSW Waratah prop, Matt Dunning is currently doing his Level 2 Coaching Course. The Sydney University Supporters Club might feel they have wound back the clock a few years, when a couple of the retired players make a cameo appearance for the Presidents XV in an Exhibition 10’s match against the NSW Police Wedgetails today as a curtain raiser to the First Grade fixture. The household names who have made major contributions to the Club such are Peter Playford, Scott Stumbles, John Langford & Brad Pillinger to name a few. While they may not be as quick or skillful as they once were it is great to see them involved in club’s 150th Anniversary Year. Speaking of Sydney University, attending the Old Boys Annual Colts dinner last Saturday night at St Andrews College were Dan Vickerman, Nick Haydon and Al Kanaar who shared their vast experiences of their time at the Students, study and life after rugby to the next generation of Sydney University players and parents. Sydney University have shown they are a diverse and multi cultural club with four players selected to represent three different countries at the upcoming IRB Under 20 Championship’s in France. The players are Tolu Latu and Angus Pulver (Australia), Ezrah Amituanai (Samoa) and Joshua King (Fiji). If you have any stories or news please email to bobw@wireless2way.com.au
