A Love Of The Hard Yakka Marks Out This Talented Young Rat

“I enjoy the contact and I like being able to get as many carries as possible,” enthused Warringah loose forward Sam Ward, when asked about his pivotal role at the breakdown. “As soon as I was able to play back row, that’s where I wanted to play,” he continued so it’s no surprise to find out that his heroes growing up were George Smith and Toutai Kefu and that the player he most admires these days is All Black Kieran Read. The 23-year-old has been in the thick of the action ever since picking up his first competitive pill at the age of eight. Graduating through Barker College, his rugby scholarship continued on through the colts at Gordon before he moved to the Rats in 2011. His combative style and work ethic has seen him become a regular fixture in 1st Grade. “Sam is our go to man to get our team going forward,” observes Warringah head coach Haig Sare. “He thrives in the physical confrontation in both attack and defence and when he picks the right line he is a very difficult man to stop. He has worked very hard in the off-season and you can see that has translated into his power on the field with his ability to consistently break tackles.” That extra work was a supplement to his recovery from a serious knee injury that sidelined him for the back half of 2012. “I probably had my best off-season yet,” said Sam “I worked hard in the gym on my strength and power and those things that would help my game. I definitely came back stronger than I was before.” Having represented the ARU National Academy side against Japan A earlier this year, the keen cyclist – “I switched to rugby when it became obvious my body shape wasn’t going to match Cadel Evans!” – admitted that his taste of the next level has him yearning for more. “I would love to play professionally, that’s definitely a goal of mine and I’m pretty competitive.” His coach certainly thinks it’s possible. “If he keeps improving on the subtleties of the game, a full time contract won't be too far away,” says Sare. - by Paul Cook Photo: Karen Watson

NSW Barbarians Tour to Argentina. Michael Cheika: “An opportunity too good to miss.”

by Jim Webster Even if you saw this story tucked away in the daily media, it needs re-telling. This writer, for one, could scarcely believe what he was reading. We’re sending a NSW Barbarians squad to Argentina to tackle the Pumas in a two-match series to help their preparation for the Rugby Championship. They leave on Monday. In other words, we’re doing all we can to help the Pumas beat the Wallabies! Well, you could read it that way, and many probably might. But we should change our perspective and look at it from the point of view of helping improve the Waratahs for the 2014 Super Rugby season when we’re going to make those finals, mark my words. The 34-man Barbarians squad will play the Pumas on August 3 in Buenos Aires and on August 9 in Salta, before returning on August 11. The Waratahs didn’t initiate this tour, but it came from the Argentinian Rugby Union. Why they would pick the Waratahs, and not one of the other nonfinalists in the Super Rugby from New Zealand or South Africa, has not been explained. But the Waratahs said they’d gladly help out. The squad will comprise both Waratahs and invited players from the Sydney Premiership and, in keeping with Baa-Baas tradition, they will wear NSW jerseys but with their club socks. Apart from providing valuable international experience, the tour offers a massive opportunity for a number of emerging NSW prospects to secure one of the Waratahs’ five extended playing squad contracts up for grabs for 2014. Coach Michael Cheika says “we are playing against the main Pumas squad and this will be their first preparation game leading into the Rugby Championship. “The majority of the Waratahs players were involved in the Lions match and, with two more fixtures against international opposition, they will have played5 three matches against Test opposition. For those guys who haven’t played Test rugby before, the experience of playing international rugby in front

of a big crowd, especially away from home, is too good to miss.” Although the tour clashes with rounds 16 and 17 of the Shute Shield (which take place on August 3/10), Cheika praised the support received from club coaches. “They have all been to meet me and have been really positive about putting their players forward to participate in a tour against quality opposition, even though the Shute Shield is going on, which is a really good sign of the co-operation between the Waratahs and clubs. “The players have been selected from watching Shute Shield matches and quizzing club coaches about their own players and opposition players they have come across.” With five places in his 2014 squad on the line, Cheika says the tour represents a massive opportunity for some of the state’s best club players to put their hand up for a professional contract, but added that “it doesn’t mean that players not on tour won’t be considered. Some players have been left behind to ensure that there is a balance for the Shute Shield games taking place. For everyone involved, the tour will also be the first exposure to the IRB’s new ‘crouch, bind, set’ scrum engagement law, which is being introduced for the first time in the southern hemisphere by SANZAR for the Rugby Championship and is aimed at enhancing player welfare and fan enjoyment. Waratahs in the touring squad are: Peter Betham, Berrick Barnes, Dave Dennis, Bernard Foley, Pat McCutcheon, Paddy Ryan, Jeremy Tilse, Will Skelton (University), Mitchell Chapman, Brendan McKibbin, Tala Grey (Easts), Cam Crawford (Norths), Sekope Kepu, Drew Mitchell (Randwick), Matt Lucas (Manly), Tatafu Polota Nau (Parramatta), Rob Horne, Sitaleki Timani, Jed Holloway, Ben Volavola (Souths) and Luke Holmes (Warringah). Invited Shute Shield players: Jack Dempsey (Gordon), Auvasa Falealii (Newcastle Waratahs), Alex Gibbon (Souths), Terrence Hepetema, David Horwitz (Randwick), Tolu Latu, Sam Talakai, Liam Winton (University), Alofa Alofa, David Lolohea, Usaia O’Sullivan (West Harbour), Kerren Straker (Penrith) and Keliti Vangalo (Easts). 5

MATCH PREVIEWS

by Terry Smith

On June 2, 1900, when Northern Suburbs were known as North Sydney, nicknamed the Pirates and playing in a black costume crested by a skull and crossbones, they played Sydney University, founded in 1863, in the first of 199 matches played by the two venerable clubs. The 200th will be played today at North Sydney Oval, with $5 from each admittance going to heart research as part of Norths’ Red Heart Day. With a host of famous Wallabies having played for each club, University have won 126 times to dwarf Norths’ 57 victories, with nine draws and the results of the remaining seven having disappeared in the mists of time. Now, of course, Norths play in red and black, with Australian captain John Thornett heading the many Wallabies to have played for the club, which has won six first grade premierships. University have captured 29 premierships, eight of them in the last nine years. In the 199 games to date, University have scored 3,517 points and Norths tallied 2,417, while the average score, according to stats man Craig Fear, is 18-12 to the Students. Their biggest win over Norths is 69-3 in 2007, while Norths’ biggest winning margin is 47-15 in 1995. WARRINGAH v MANLY At Pittwater Rugby Park First round score: Manly 42-24

Due to fly to Argentina on Monday with the NSW Barbarians, halfback Brendan McKibbin will turn out for Easts against West Harbour in the game to be shown live on ABC TV. However, as doctors have ruled that Wallaby back James O’Connor must wait another week before returning to rugby, Wests will stick to the side thumped 53-27 by Eastwood.

Warringah are expecting neighbours Manly to try to overwhelm them with sheer size and power in a local derby that could pull as many as 5,000 people. “Their big pack will target our set pieces,” predicts Warringah coach Haig Sare. His Manly counterpart Phil Blake bristles at such a suggestion. “We’re certainly not one-dimensional,” he says. “We can spread it wide. We’ve got a few ways to play.” Still, when your pack boasts the likes of Cadeyrn Neville, Ed Gower, Tim Fairbrother and Jordy Reid, big is beautiful. The rucks will be no place for the faint-hearted.

Easts coach Mark Bakewell was happy with the play of his forwards in the 26-22 loss to Manly. 7 However, Bakewell has shuffled his backs in a bid to get the right mix, with winger Will Fay the new

At Millner Field First round score: Eastwood 47-18

At North Sydney Oval First round score: University 41-13 Waratah skipper Dave Dennis makes a rare appearance in club rugby when he takes the field in a Sydney University team chockful of Wallabies and Super Rugby players for the game against Norths. Forwards win rugby matches and with the likes of Will Skelton, Jeremy Tilse and Tim Davidson joining Dennis, it will take a superhuman effort by Norths to gain some sort of parity. “It’s not rocket science,” said Norths coach Scott Fava. “To beat University, you have to upset their momentum. Stop the momentum. The problem is to do it for 80 minutes.” With four rounds remaining, Norths sit precariously in eighth spot, while University are second three points behind Eastwood.

Tip: University

Back in tenth spot and seven points behind the eighth club Norths, Parramatta cannot afford another slip-up in the run home against Eastwood, Easts, Warringah and Penrith. Mathematically they can do it, but the Two Blues must overcome a horrible injury toll and the return home of Fijian star Dan Rawaqa. As well he might be, Woodies coach John Manenti is wary of unpredictable Parramatta, but he is further boosted by the return of fly-half Jimmy Hilgendorf, who is going to be a key player in the play-offs. With skipper Hugh Perrett swooping for a hat trick of tries, Eastwood swamped West Harbour 53-27, prompting Manenti to say he was delighted with their play in the first two-thirds of the game. WARRINGAH RATETTE SETS GAMES RECORD Last Saturday, Lynda Robertson played her 200th game for the Warringah Ratettes, the highest number of games ever played by a female for the club. It is also believed to be a record for women’s rugby in NSW. Lynda, who played her first game of rugby in 2000 and has not missed a year since, said her most memorable game was the Ratettes first Grand Final win in 2003. “We were the underdogs, playing teams loaded with representative players, and all the Ratette girls who had worked so hard, played extremely well. A fantastic GF win I won’t forget” said Lynda. Starting as a flanker and now a halfback, Robertson, now 39, played for Sydney, played 7’s with the Aussie Rats in Hong Kong and was in the Australian squad in 2008-2009. Having played

a lot of sport at a high level she commented, “Rugby is a game where you must work for each other, look after each other and play as a team otherwise you will lose or get hurt. Rugby is the greatest game. You gain a lot of great friendships and respect for each other through rugby.”

COLTS REPORT by Scott Killingworth

Warringah 36 v Randwick 28 Randwick demolished Warringah 57-8 in Round 5 at Coogee oval and the Galloping Greens could be easily forgiven if they expected yet another easy encounter up north at Rat Park last week. Warringah's try in the opening minute of the match would have come as a great surprise to the 'Wicks indeed. After some steady ploughing of the football up field from the kick-off, inside centre Harry McBryde threw a crisp inside ball to fleet footed fullback Mike Edwards. Edwards ran forty metres before drawing the remaining defender to then pass to Ben Scanlon in support, who finished off the impressive opening minute try. It was nearly a case of déjà vu just a few plays after the resulting kick off, when yet another Edwards linebreak from deep in Warringah territory looked like opening up Ben Scanlon's second try in the opening five minutes. Some last ditch desperation defence from Randwick halted Ben from enjoying an early double but the Rats managed to score minutes later, when ‘winger’ come lock, Jake Price dove over for a try in the corner a few phases later. After two Warringah tries, Randwick were still yet to touch the football but the momentum finally swung their way. Jake Price, tryscorer just a minute earlier went from hero to villain when he was yellow carded for a tackle off the ball, giving Randwick an advantage for the next ten minutes and their first hint of possession. Randwick scored with as much ease as Warringah's two tries, with Haynes Wileman diving over following some superb Randwick offloading that has seemed to be evident throughout their club this season. Randwick strung together some excellent phase play shortly afterwards and looked to be a chance of equalising before perennial Warringah danger man Ben Scanlon intercepted a Randwick cut out ball and ran sixty metres to score against the run of play. The tryfest continued a minute later when Randwick scored one of the most impressive tries I have seen this season. Showing a touch of Mark Ella about

him, flyhalf Andrew Norton put the always hardrunning Tevita Vea into a hole inside the Randwick 22m line before backing up and fending the final defender to score at the opposite end. The frequency of the tries eventually slowed down and Warringah went on to close out the match 3628. Randwick will look to join the winners circle again this week against a Penrith side that forfeited last week against competition leaders Sydney Uni, before a mouth watering top four clash the following week against Norths. Parramatta 46 v Gordon 10 The Two Blues have remained undefeated since round twelve when they came within eight points of co-leaders Manly. Since then they have pieced together three successive wins to jump into the top six and show that they are genuine title contenders. Winger Luke Casey is one of the quickest men in the competition and this was made evident with his opening half hat-trick of tries against the Highlanders last week. This round sees the Two Blues at home against eighth placed Eastwood. West Harbour 32 v Eastwood 21 Offloading was the Pirates order of the day, with over thirty offloads throughout the match being successfully pulled off by the men from Concord Oval. Eastwood have been plagued by injuries all season and welcomed their 38th Firsts colts player in a match that was dominated by the strength and athleticism of West Harbour's large yet mobile forward pack. The Pirates still remain in finals contention and will take their momentum from last week into this round's match against Easts before another must win match against sixth placed Warringah in round 16. Other Matches: Easts 0 V Manly 52 Norths 26 V Souths 38 Penrith 0 V Sydney Uni 28 Tips for this week: Manly, Randwick, Sydney Uni, Wests, Parramatta, Souths. Could all coaches please submit match reports to Scottkill@outlook.com

It’s a good call to answer the phone when Michael Cheika rings. West Harbour winger Alofa Alofa almost missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime because he didn’t answer his phone. Two-and-a-half weeks ago the 22-year old try-scoring machine was en route to his parents’ house when Waratahs coach Michael Cheika rang him with news he’d been selected in the NSW Barbarians side to play the Pumas on a two match tour of Argentina at the start of August. “I was driving out to mum and dad’s but I didn’t get it the first time because it was a random number,” laughed Alofa. “I just sent a text saying to call me back because I didn’t know who it was and when I connected it to Bluetooth and he said ‘this is Michael Cheika’ I just had to pull over. I was buzzing.”

‘Call me back’ was the text from West Harbour winger Alofa Alofa when Michael Cheika rang to advise of his selection for the Argentine Tour. Photos: www.seiserphotography.com

Alofa 25is one of 13-club players selected by Cheika for a tour which will be part of the Pumas’ preparation for the Rugby Championship later in August. Leaving this Monday, the 13 club

players will join 21 Waratahs for matches against the Argentinian national side in Buenos Aires on August 3 and Salta on August 9. In addition to providing valuable international experience, the tour is a perfect opportunity for a number of the best club talents to vie for one five Extended Playing Squad contracts for 2014. “For the guys who haven’t played Test rugby before, the experience of playing international rugby in front of a big crowd, especially away from home, is too good to miss out on,” said Cheika, who consulted with Shute Shield coaches about his selections. “The players have been selected from watching Shute Shield matches and quizzing club coaches about their own players and opposition players they have come across.” On the verge of heading overseas just six weeks ago, Alofa says his club coach Matt Briggs was a major factor in his decision to stay in Sydney. “I was about to leave for France, but I spoke to Matt Briggs about it and he told me to hang on because something might happen here, then this came up, so I really owe him and Michael Cheika a lot,” he said. Electrifying Randwick back Terrence Hepetema is another young-gun looking to kick-start his professional career via club rugby, and says the touring aspect gives the trip greater significance than a straightforward trial. “Cheik will be taking a close look not only on the field, but also touring and how you get along with teammates and things like that,” the 21-year old said. “There’s a lot of spotlight and people are watching and if you play up or do something wrong, even little things, they’ll put an ‘X’ next to your name, so you’ve got to be on top of your game the whole tour.” Recruited by the Galloping Greens when he finished high school in Wellington three years ago, Hepetema spent most of last year on the sidelines with injury but incredible club form in 2013 has already earned him a Super Rugby cap off the bench for the Tahs against the Force in Perth. A fearless ball carrier with the natural skill and vision of a playmaker, Hepetema was in line for a shot at (Continued on Page 27) 25

the Lions before Rob Horne returned to the fray, but says a spot on the plane to Argentina is a fitting compensation. “Cheik rang me after I missed selection for the Lions and said I’d be involved in the Argentina tour, so I’ve just been trying to play it down and perform well for my club,” he explained. “Nothing is set in stone yet and you can’t get too far ahead of yourself, so I’ll just do my best and if we can start getting some wins for Randwick, then we’ll all look good and my performance will benefit.”

“It’s been a pretty tough season out at Penrith, but it’s looking like a really good year for me to step up,” the 21-year old hooker and Emus captain enthused. “Cheika said at the start of the year that he was going to help the West out and he’s really pushed through with that and it’s good to know they’re looking at us.” Like Alofa and Hepetema, Straker is excited, but admits his knowledge of Argentina is pretty limited. “I know the Argentinians play a pretty hard and physical game and they love to scrum, so that’ll be a good step up and I’m also partial to a nice steak, so hopefully we get an eye-fillet or something,” he joked. “I’m just trying to do the family proud – it’s not easy living over here away from them so this makes it all worthwhile.”

Randwick centre Terrence Hepetma realises the professional opportunity the NSW Barbarians tour offers.

With club players set to miss at least two Shute Shield games, Cheika worked closely with coaches to ensure no sides would be disadvantaged as their stars strive to make it at the next level. At the end of the day, for many club players, that’s what it’s all about. “For someone like Kerren Straker from Penrith, this is a great opportunity to play for a professional contract and in an area where we want rugby to grow, it proves to everyone out there that there is an opportunity to go further,” said Cheika. Moving from New Zealand over a year ago, Straker says the call-up is just reward for a lot of hard work and a couple of long years away from home.

Penrith captain and hooker, Kerren Straker is delighted with his selection for the Argentine tour.

Invited Shute Shield players to tour Argentina: Jack Dempsey (Gordon), Auvasa Falealii (Newcastle Waratahs), Alex Gibbon (Souths), Terrence Hepetema, David Horwitz (Randwick), Tolu Latu, Sam Talakai, Liam Winton (University), Alofa Alofa, David Lolohea, Usaia O’Sullivan (West Harbour), Kerren Straker (Penrith) and Keliti Vangalo (Easts).

WILSO’S WHISPERS by Bob Wilson

One of the best blokes you could ever meet, former Eastern Suburbs 1st Grade centre, Benny Neowhouse passed away last year. Today down at Woollahra Oval many of his mates will gather on the eastern sideline for several drinks in honour of Benny. Benny was one of the nicest and most generous blokes you could ever meet, a true blue Beastie who just loved the club and who loved life. It is still quite unbelievable that Benny is no longer with us and we all still think he will just walk into the bar and order a schooner of Black. There will be many fond memories from the past relived today about a really and truly great man. I am sure he is giving that barman in the sky plenty of business. RIP Benjamin Neowhouse, you were one of the best.

including the 20th Anniversary of the 1993 season which saw First, Third and Fourth Grade Premierships and the Club Championship as well as the 1995 and 1998 First Grade Premierships sides. I am sure it will be a memorable night and going by the great Gordon Rugby tradition there will be plenty of the very best wine, liqueurs and ice cold refreshments. Adam Fulepp has moved from the Sydney Swans Logistics team to join North’s Rugby Club as the new Rugby Operations Manager. Hailing from the Northern Beaches, Adam is a former North’s Junior and Warringah Rats player. Adam attended St Pius X College and is currently Assistant Coach for their 1st XV. Randwick held “Heritage Day” last Saturday when the First Grade team wore jerseys with the names of all of the ‘Wicks Australian and NSW Representatives in the game against Warringah. Many ex-players turned up for what was a great afternoon with a ton of memories exchanged from both on and off the field. Some of the stories from what happened in the old clubhouse cannot be published. Honouring the memory of Greg Smith, coach of Eastern Suburbs, the NSW Waratahs, the Wallabies and former Randwick winger, the Greg Smith Shield was hotly contested a few weeks ago in the Local Derby with the ‘Wicks running out the winners.

Tonight the Gordon Rugby Club will hold its Gala Dinner which has become an annual event that aims to reunite all players and supporters, both current and former, for an evening of “Celebration” of Gordon Rugby, its traditions and history. Last year, the Highlanders celebrated the past 76 years with a wonderful night reminiscing about all the great stories and memories. This year they are celebrating the past 25 years of Gordon Rugby 28

Neil “Monster” Tyler just loves a social function so he will be there today leading the way when Eastwood celebrate their 20th anniversary of their tour of the USA, UK and Ireland back in 1993. Just for the record Eastwood were beaten by a team called Belmont Shore on the USA leg of the tour. I know Monster will remember who was the coach of that team from California that day. Have a good day fellas! Good to see the great Manchester United Soccer team enjoying themselves at the Bondi Icebergs last week. They spent their time in the club and not too close to the pool. There were many old Rugby blokes who mingled with several of these great players for several hours. If you have any stories or news please email to bobw@wireless2way.com.au
