RANDWICK V MANLY RUGBY NEWS 90th BIRTHDAY YEAR

BarflyBuzz by Terry Smith

To celebrate Robin Timmins being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to rugby, Eastwood invited their No 1 supporter to present the jumpers to the players before the game against Penrith. The gesture gave her as big a thrill as the award. Teki Tuipulotu’s wife Heather has returned to work so the former Tongan international could afford to become club and first grade coach at Penrith. Teki explains, “If I worked a part-time job, it would have paid more but Heather said, ‘The boys need you. I’m going back to work.’ How about that for support? She’s fantastic.” On Monday morning John Manenti was in a bed at the Mater hospital after undergoing knee surgery. On Tuesday night the jovial Eastwood coach was at training at Millner Field. We hear one of Sydney’s leading club coaches may be heading to Ireland at the end of the season. The British and Irish Lions are accompanied by no less than twenty-four officials. No, we’re not kidding. Compare this to when the 1984 Wallaby Grand Slammers swept to glory through the British Isles in 1984 with a management comprised of coach Alan Jones, manager Chilla Wilson, assistant coach Alec Evans and Dr Syd Sugarman, who doubled as physiotherapist. No trips for the boys here. Jones was at Manly Oval last Saturday with his 1983 Manly team to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of their premiership victory. He had a kind word to say about Waratah coach Michael Cheika and warned clubs to be aware of the need to entertain people. And while Jones and Co were down near the touchline, Rod Macqueen, who took Australia to a World Cup victory in 1999,was watching from high in the stand. John O’Shea, the old British Lion is second to none when it comes to having a sense of humour. He and wife Marlene (the former Olympic sprinter Published by: Eric Spilsted Publishing PO Box 848, Lane Cove NSW 2066 Publisher/Editor: Jim Davis T: 9427 8879 | M: 0411 242 535 jim.davis@rugbynews.org

Marlene Mathews) called their son Richard. Rick O’Shea? Ricochet? Spare a thought for the poor ground announcer. Firstly, he has to identify the chap who dives over for a try under a pile of players. Then he must pronounce their name right. Bad luck if it is Parramatta’s Billy Qereqeretabua or Oleni Ngungutau, of Southern Districts. One club announcer arms himself with a sheet with phonetic pronunciation of such islander names. What’s in a name? Manly last weekend introduced a prop named Jimmy Gentle. A gentle prop? Come on. Big Jim grew up in England and spent six years in South Australia where he represented the State for three years. Another prop Tristan Goodbody was a new face in the Randwick front-row last Saturday. Manly officials wonder why Sydney University’s Tim Davidson and Eastwood’s Jimmy Hilgendorf were cleared by the Rebels to play in Sydney last Saturday when five Manly Marlins were kept in Melbourne even though the Rebels weren’t playing. Randwick have been invited to play in the Dubai Sevens in November and could take part in the Singapore Sevens too. Australian Rugby Union chief executive Bill Pulver’s claim to rugby fame? He was Michael Hawker’s halfback at Shore before linking with Simon Poidevin, Eddie Jones and Wayne Erickson at University of NSW. Dipping into his purplest prose, the Manly Daily’s Jon Geddes has described Warringah’s centre Michael Adams as “hotter than a Trinidad Scorpion chilli” and says Rats fullback Dave Feltscheer can spark up a rugby game like a bolt of lightning. Two of the all-time greats among heavyweight boxers are Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey. The names live on in Sydney club rugby, with Jack Johnson circa 2013 playing No 7 for Randwick. The latter day Jack Dempsey, whose uncle Tony Dempsey was a Wallaby, took leave from Gordon’s No 6 jumper to wear Australia’s No 7 in the World Junior Championships in France.

Club Rugby to Waratahs and taking on the Lions by Brendan Bradford Rookie Waratahs forwards Will Skelton and Jed Holloway weren’t even in their teens the last time the British and Irish Lions toured Australia. Neither of them played rugby then either. “I was living in Auckland and was a league player then – I didn’t actually watch much rugby,” says Skelton, now 21. Holloway meanwhile, played soccer and was ‘a beach-rat running around Yamba and going to a school which had 150 kids in it.’ How things change. Twelve years, about two feet in height and a whirlwind Super Rugby education later and two of the brightest young Australian rugby talents were packing down opposite some of the biggest names in the game as the Waratahs took on the British and Irish Lions last Saturday night at Allianz Stadium. Although he spent the entire 2012 season on the sidelines with injury and had only started in one of his five Super Rugby matches, Skelton took no prisoners in an impressive 80-minute performance. He flattened flyhalf Jonathan Sexton in the 13th minute and constantly sought out more unwitting red-shirted victims to brutalise in defence before setting-up Tom Carter’s second try from a lineout after 46-minutes.

match. With three Super Rugby caps to his name, Holloway went toe-to-toe with Englishman Tom Croft for 50-minutes in a mature and confident performance in front of 40,000 vocal supporters. The twenty year-old shot to prominence in Southern Districts’ Grand Final run last year, and when asked if playing against the Lions was something he ever thought possible, his candid reply perfectly summed up the enormity of the occasion: “No, not ever. At the start of last year I was playing Colts and midway through this year I’m playing against the Lions. It’s just surreal. “It’s only a small group that gets to play the Lions and words can’t really describe what I was feeling and how pumped up I was to have everyone coming to watch something that I was involved with.”

Waratahs’ Jed Holloway, 2012 Shute Shield Rookie of the Year winner, turns the Lions around in a penetrating run.

Waratahs’ Will Skelton, 135kgs, put in an impressive performance against the Lions last week.

“It’s massive to think that my first game back (from injury) was a Super trial at the start of the year and my head’s just coming around to the atmosphere and the massive crowd out there,” he said after the

The 47-17 scoreline didn’t do justice to the plucky Waratahs side and both Holloway and Skelton said the opportunity to pit their skills against the world’s best was a great learning curve as they attempt to cement their spots in the professional ranks. “Guys like Will and Ollie (Atkins) have worked so hard and we’re lucky enough to get the opportunity and I was just running around trying to soak it all in,” said Holloway who got a few tips from his opposite number, Croft, after the game. Anything can happen in 12 years, but by the next time the Lions visit Australia, you’d expect Skelton and Holloway to have appeared in a few more matches on some of the world’s biggest stages. 3

Wallabies v Lions: I’ll predict that whoever wins this first Test will win the series. by Jim Webster The starter’s pistol is about to be fired…at long last… after a mountainous buildup. We’ve had the “will he... or won’t he” saga regarding Robbie Deans’ choice of Quade Cooper in the Wallabies squad and while I too would not choose him in my starting XV, I’d use him off the bench. His brilliance at times is electrifying and there are very few Wallabies in the history of the game able to do some of the things he does with the ball. But then he’ll make those occasional stupid errors that can bring the whole pattern of play undone. Plus, his defence is not a strong point. But as I said, coming off the bench in the second half–when everyone’s tiring and slowing–is when his sensational plays could turn any Test match. Enough said about Cooper. We’ve also had Kurtley Beale’s entry and return from alcohol rehabilitation and lots of discussion about code-hopper Israel Folau’s impending debut in Test rugby, which I strongly support. But now that’s all behind us. Tonight the focus is fully on the Wallabies tackling the British & Irish Lions at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane before mountains of red, the likes of which many of you will never have seen before – and may not see again. And I’ll predict that whoever wins this first Test will win the series. Because, as the Brumbies’ South African World Cup-winning coach Jake White says “it’s about getting momentum” and that’s why tonight looms as the most important Test we’ve faced for many years. The Lions are unhappy with the standard of opposition they’ve been thrown in preparation for the Test. But they have shown ample in their supreme performances against the Queensland Reds and the Waratahs. They have got their message across loud and clear. They have so much ammunition up front in the set pieces,5 in their physicality around the mauls and down the middle to show that they’re going to have us marching backwards for long periods. And don’t for one second forget their goalkickers.

Wow, they find it very hard to miss! To think fullback Leigh Halfpenny had a 95.7% success rate with his boot (22/23) following Saturday’s match and accounted for 30 of the Lion’s 47 points against the Waratahs. What it means, quite simply, is that the Lions are guaranteed upwards of 15 points from goalkicking even before kickoff. Above all else, their coach Warren Gatland says the mood among the Lions is “very positive” and they’re looking toward victory tonight. So it will need a supreme effort from our forwards to stand up to them. The Lions also have enormous inspiration, given they have not won a series since 1997 in South Africa. How the coaches (remembering Gatland and Robbie Deans are both Kiwis) drive their teams will add greatly to the outcome, but let me say I’m not feeling as confident as I was before the tour began. I’d love our guys to feed on lion’s meat tonight. Just let’s us hope it’s on the Wallabies’ menu. There are two other pieces of rugby news I want to share with you. Keep an eye on results from the World Cup Sevens in Moscow, being held next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Australia faces France, Spain and Tunisia in pool play. Captain Ed Jenkins leads a very experienced squad which features three current Super Rugby players – Waratahs teammates Bernard Foley and Matt Lucas, and Queensland Reds flyer Luke Morahan. Also, I was fascinated to learn that Wales has been added to the itinerary for the Wallabies’ spring tour, which means they are set for a crack at the historic Grand Slam, only achieved once by Australia in 1984. The Wallabies were scheduled to play England on November 2, then Italy, Ireland and Scotland on successive weekends. Now they finish the tour facing Wales as well, in Cardiff, on November 30. Good luck, lads! I was fortunate enough to travel with coach Alan Jones and his Wallabies all those years ago when we won the Grand Slam and let me say that the increasing pressure after each of those victories was like something I’ve never experienced before. 5

Sydney Premier Rugby

MATCH PREVIEWS

by Terry Smith

The tight five of the Sydney University team that takes the field against West Harbour in today’s clash between the sides running second and third in the Shute Shield could be titled Waratahs Galore. Jeremy Tilse and Paddy Ryan are the props and Ollie Atkins and Will Skelton in the second-row. Another Waratah Liam Winton is at flanker, while in the backs lurk further Waratahs in Tom Kingston and Tom Carter, who is fresh from captaining NSW against the Force as the aperitif to scoring a couple of tries for the Waratahs against the British and Irish Lions. However, it would be worse for Wests if University skipper Tim Davidson wasn’t having a week off. Wests are on a roll. With a pushover try at a crucial stage setting up a stunning 30-26 upset of Southern Districts, they came back from 8-26 to post a famous win which lifted them into third spot a point behind premiers University, who are in second spot after six successive victories. Unlike University, there aren’t Waratahs everywhere you look at Wests. Simply a bunch of enthusiastic up and comers who train three nights a week under a coach who has spent the last three years honing his skills at Penrith. Briggs has brought a new consistency to the islander passion that leads to tries against any opposition. A formidable mix. With eight rounds remaining, Eastwood have skipped to a six point lead with 42 points, followed by Sydney University (36), West Harbour (35), Souths (31). Manly and Easts (30), Randwick (27), Parramatta (25), Norths (24) and Warringah (19). With a spot in the top four all-important and eight clubs getting a play-off spot, the plot thickens.

RANDWICK v MANLY

Terrence Hepetema returns at No.13 after Waratahs duty.

to inside-centre. Connor, a 19- year -old from Berry, has been given the seal of approval by Randwick’s Wallaby champion Simon Poidevin. Manly have stuck to the team sunk by two late Sydney University tries, with coach Phil Blake stating his praise of Randwick. “We follow them in the competition, so I see a lot of them on tape. They’ve got a good pattern and they stick to it. Seilala Lam, their No 6, is the form player of the competition.” Randwick get a boost from the return of Lam, prop Richard Aho and centre Terrence Hepetema from Waratah duty against the Lions. “Manly have big, tough forwards,” says Randwick’s rising coach Wade Kelly. “We’re smaller. We’ll try to move them around.”

Tip: Randwick

The Galloping Pinks (no, we’re not kidding) are at home to Manly in today’s ABC TV game at Coogee. To mark Ladies Day, Randwick will discard the famed myrtle green for an all7 pink costume in this big clash for which coach Wade Kelly has switched flanker Tom Connor

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY v WEST HARBOUR At University Oval “We’re hungry for more, but we’d probably be 1,000 to 1 to beat Sydney University,” said coach Matt Briggs whose West Harbour team bid for 7

their sixth straight victory when they tackle the premiers in the sylvan setting of University Oval. “It’s a huge challenge.” His front-row of David Lolohea, a big lump of a prop, Reg De Jager and Vaughan Lomax pinched a tight head from Southern Districts last Saturday and winger Alofa Alofa, who shares the Shute Shield try scoring honours with Warringah halfback Josh Holmes with nine apiece, are players to watch. Alofa had a rookie season with the Roosters before returning to Wests. University are bidding for their seventh straight victory and with much Waratah firepower up front, it will take a herculean effort in the forwards for Wests to come away with the points. Tip: University

against Norths, but get a boost up front from the return of skipper Andrew Cox and Waratah second-rower Adam Coleman. Dan Rawaqa, once a Fijian international, will be a danger man in the backs. Tip: Parramatta

NORTHERN SUBURBS v EASTWOOD At North Sydney Oval With Norths looking fragile after five straight losses, the men in red and black bounced back with a 32-17 upset of Parramatta in the Waratahs v Lions curtain raiser. In a further boost, Waratahs Cam Crawford and AJ Gilbert will be back for today’s clash with front-runners Eastwood at North Sydney Oval. Explaining Norths’ stunning lift in form, coach Scott Fava explains: “Our mistake rate has been the problem and we cut out the errors. Corey Brown and Liam Windon were not getting the ball at the back in good space.” As Eastwood coach John Manenti rotates his props, the return of Jed Gillespie is the only change in the team that disposed of Penrith 67-14. Trivia note: Eastwood’s only losses to date have been by two points to Southern Districts and three to Eastern Suburbs. Tip: Eastwood

Ollie Atkins is one of many Waratahs returning for Uni to make things difficult for Wests.

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v PARRAMATTA At Forshaw Park Southern Districts players must still be wondering how they managed to blow a lead of 26-8 to lose 26-39 to West Harbour. “It was all about attitude and not sticking to the game plan,” said coach Cam Blades. “Wests had a big, heavy pack which was not in the game in the first sixty minutes. Our scrum was too high and not aggressive enough and Wests got their tails up after winning a tight head.” Souths get a boost from the return of Waratahs Ben Volavola and Jed Holloway and will look to flyhalf Rohan Saifoloi to increase his points tally of 116. Parramatta are coming off a shocker 8

Norths flanker Ben Matwijow was in terrific form against Parramatta.

WARRINGAH v GORDON

PENRITH v EASTERN SUBURBS

At Pittwater Rugby Park Warringah, back in tenth spot, six points out of the top eight, cannot afford another loss if they want to make the playoffs. The only changes from the 35-24 loss to Easts all come in the forwards, with Luke Holmes back at hooker, Luke Preston at prop and Pierce Howell at No 8. Holmes’ brother Josh continues to rack up the tries at halfback, with his five-pointer against Easts being his ninth of the season. Tip: Warringah

COLTS REPORT by Scott Killingworth

The unpredictable trend of colts rugby in 2013 continued last weekend with Manly and Gordon succeeding over competition heavyweights Sydney University and Randwick respectively. These results mean that Manly have leapfrogged from third place to number one, leading the competition eight rounds from the finals. Randwick were joint leaders of the competition until round nine, where they suffered their first loss of the season against Sydney Uni. Gordon made that two in a row last week and the Wicks fortunes do not get any easier as we see them pitted this week against the new competition leaders. There is another delicious encounter on the cards this week in Gordon V Warringah. Gordon are in red hot form, coming off that unexpected win over Randwick last week meet a Rats side that itself has won four successive matches. Both sides rely heavily on the match winning capabilities of their dynamic backlines and it seems inevitable that this will be a highly entertaining affair for all involved. Kick off for this encounter between the two north of the bridge teams is 3pm at Chatswood Oval. Manly 43 v Sydney University 25 The match began with the big hits expected from two forward packs that had demonstrated in the previous nine rounds that they are the benchmarks of this competition when it comes to physical prowess. Manly kept Uni pinned in their 22 for the first five minutes before Uni managed to put together some phases and run their way out of the danger zone with clever usage of offloads. They looked to be set to score the first points of the match after conjuring eleven phases of well structured rucking and mauling before some brutal Marlins goal line defence got them off the hook, after forcing the knock on. It wasn’t long after when the dynamic of the match shifted yet again, when Marlins flanker Ethan Uili surged through the Uni line before offloading to a rampaging Rhys Dombkins who ended up tackled just short of the tryline. Uni were penalised for

slowing the ball and Marlins kicked the easy penalty in front to start the match as leaders. Next points came when Ryan Squires gave a perfectly timed short ball to Rhys Dombkins who ran on to score in the corner and the Marlins moved up to 8-0. Dombkins continued his influence on the match from the resulting kickoff, beating four tacklers in a run that went thirty metres up field. The well-drilled Uni side stole the ball back and strung together some big forward runs of their own before capitalising on an overlap by scoring a try in the corner for their first points of the match. Manly seemed to start to drop off after the Rugby blitzkrieg of their first 15 minutes and Sam Quinn made it seem all too easy when he barged over for the Student’s second try of the match. Manly stole back the lead a few minutes before halftime when flyhalf Fabian Natoli drifted wide at first receiver before throwing a cut-out pass to his wing. The resulting run was ended two metres out before the Marlins were given a penalty for Uni hands in the ruck. They kicked to touch and lock Fraser Bursle scored off the ensuing lineout with a perfectly formed rolling maul before a Uni penalty goal made it 15-13 to Manly at oranges. Manly ignored the barrage of niggle put to them by obviously frustrated Uni forwards and seemed to go up another level in the second half. Highlight of this half was when Rob Arnold intercepted the ball on his 40m line before kicking the ball twenty metres later, just as he was about to be tackled. The kick bounced just one foot short of the tryline and an unlikely candidate, prop Rory O’Connor won the footrace to dive on the ball and score the Marlins first points of the second half. Lions 2013: Sea of Red Floods By Paul Cook Australian Shores The rugby may be the focal point of the British & Irish Lions tours but the chance to travel around and follow your heroes, making new friends, meeting old ones, enjoying the camaraderie with your hosts and celebrating each match in style – win, lose or draw, is a calling that sees thousands of Lions supporters depart the UK and Ireland en masse every four years. While the biggest wave that will complete the first Sea of Red invasion Down Under for 12 years will only have arrived in the last few days in time for the test series, there’s been plenty of rugby mad tourists on display in Perth, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney and Canberra already. All soaking up and helping to create the unique atmosphere that surrounds these historic tours. Rugby News has been out and about amongst the red throng across the country to find out where they’ve come from, what they’re up to and what their thoughts are on the tour so far and one thing is abundantly clear, they believe they’re here to witness the Lions first series win since 1997.

“ The Lions are too powerful, we’re gonna win 2-1” “The Lions are too powerful, we’re gonna win 2-1,” Sean from Edinburgh told me in Brisbane before the Queensland Reds clash. “The Wallabies may have more x-factor players but the Lions are more expansive than they’ve been stereotyped. “This is the year… it’s about time they did it again.” Sean and fellow Scots Tim, Sean, Jake and Jamie – kilted up for the occasion of course–are in for the whole shabang, having travelled to Hong Kong for the Barbarians game before landing in Perth in time for the Western Force match. 25

However, it wasn’t until they reached Brisbane that Lions fever truly kicked in.

“Hong Kong was good, lots of ex-pats and a good vibe with mostly Lions fans but Perth was different,” reckoned Sean. “It’s very much an AFL town and it didn’t really feel like a Lions game was taking place and it was a shame to travel all that way to see a pretty one-sided game as we need as many tough games as possible to build towards the test series. “Brisbane is much better, a real buzz, especially with the whole Quade Cooper story.” Also in Brisbane, I met James from Kildare and Caoimhe from Galway, who had landed from Ireland just that morning and were hiring a camper van to drive to every game except the Brumbies – “ Canberra’s too far outta the way!” Their main concern seemed to be that there weren’t enough Irish players in the team to face the Reds. “The majority of people here are going to be Irish so, give us two or three lads in the team eh!” joked James. I hate to think how they felt when Tommy Bowe was subsequently taken off with a broken hand. They too were upbeat about the tourists chances. “I think it’s a poor Aussie team, we should be beating them,” said James while Caoimhe was quietly confident. “I don’t think it’s necessarily the strongest Lions team,” she mused “but Gatland has the quality there if he can actually find the combination that works.” Fellow Irishmen, Nick from Cork and Kevin from Limerick, were enjoying the half-time refreshments at Allianz Stadium last Saturday – dressed as lions of course–when I asked if they’d travelled to Newcastle for the one-sided Combined Country match the previous Tuesday. “Newcastle?” Kevin smiled. “Ay, it was a good craic, good fun and we watched the game as well!” (see photos page 27) 25

More Lions supporters, with ‘lion’, head to Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Sean and his Scottish mates; Tim, Sean, Jake and Jamie- first stop Hong Kong, then Perth and pictured in Brisbane where “Lions fever really kicked in.”

Kevin from Limerick (L) and Nick from Cork, were just two of the many Irish at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. There will be plenty of eye-catching costumes at tonight’s Test.

James, from Kildare and Caoimhe, from Galway in Ireland, are hiring a camper van to take in the sights and follow the Lions tour.

WILSO’S WHISPERS Randwick’s Allen Stutchbury is another hard working volunteer in Club Rugby. Allen, an Australian citizen but originally from the Mother country, supports the Wallabies and Australia in all sports. There are many “Sir Lunchalots” in Rugby but Stutch is right up there with the best of them. He is a very dangerous man to go to lunch with as many can attest, he also plays a mean piano and as quoted by Ian “Cowboy” Ross, former NSW Board member “this bloke knows more Rugby songs than anyone I know”. Allen played scrumhalf at the famous Furness Rugby Club, in the English Lake District, at age 19 and gained a reputation as a fiery player who spent more time in the sin bin than on the field. After that he had a stint at sea as an Engineer, where he visited Australia, and was so impressed that he moved out here in 1972. In 1974, following a few of his rugby mates, he took up Rowing and was soon selected to row in the engine room of the Sydney Lightweight eight at the National Regatta in Penrith. After a period of coaching Rugby at Beecroft in Sydney, he was convinced in 1991 by Ray Evans, famous Randwick Rugby raconteur, to join the club. “Stutch” is a long term Major Sponsor of the Randwick Rugby Football Club through his company, Divcall (NSW) and is also a long serving member of the Board of the Randwick Rugby Football Club. He must have some great employees at Divcall as they still recognise him when he visits the office. He is also a Board member of “ELLAVATION” the “Not for Profit Foundation” formed by Mark, Glen, Gary and Marcia Ella to promote education and healthier lifestyles for Indigenous Australians while he is also a long time Sponsor of the Ella 7’s held annually in Coffs Harbour. “Stutch” is also the current Manager of the ‘Wicks Reserve Grade and Manager of the highly successful Randwick 7’s Squad under the coaching of Marcus Blackburn where they have enjoyed success at International level in both Singapore and Darwin. He also leads an expedition of old Rugby mates from the UK, Australia and New Zealand each March to the Hong Kong 7’s and are now in their 19th year of touring (with no major casualties as yet) but quite a few yellow cards. Although disappointed at the demise of the Randwick Rugby Licenced Club, which 28

by Bob Wilson

unfortunately looks like closing due to a downturn in business, he agrees that so long as the Randwick Rugby Football club remains, life is good. He says that Club Rugby is the lifeblood of Australian Rugby and if club Rugby is strong then the Wallabies are strong. I wish some other people would realise that! Good on you Stutch or should I say Sir Lunchalot! The Coffs Harbour Rugby Club held their 40 Year Celebration weekend recently, yes…the weekend that went from the Friday until late Monday. The weekend started on the Friday night at the Coast Hotel (formerly the Fitzroy) then Saturday at the Coffs Rugby Park where there were Junior, Women’s, Legends & Old Boys as well as the Reserve Grade and 1st Grade fixtures against Southern Cross University. The club was full and it went well into the morning. Well if that wasn’t enough it was onto the Luncheon on the Sunday at the Racecourse that close to 350 people attended in what was a fantastic afternoon. Former Coffs player and current NSWRU CEO, Bruce Worboys was the MC with Nick Farr-Jones the Guest Speaker who was in fine form. Both of these gentlemen did a marvelous job. Veteran Mid North Coast Rugby identity, Gary Munday from the Kempsey Cannonballs read out a very funny poem to top things off. The teams of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s were announced by different players of each era notably Graham Lockett, Dwayne Vignes, Ray Ommunsden and Brendan Hoy and then the Team of 40 Years was read out by Bruce Worboys. All the people announcing the various teams were very entertaining with many stories told about the players. Brendan Hoy could also get a job as a comedian although he probably would be fending off many law suits. Some of the more notables in the Team of 40 Years were former NSW and Country winger Dwayne Vignes, NSW centre Chris Callow, former Manly prop Hugh Adler while former NSW Waratah’s coach and Sydney University stalwart, Dick Laffan was the coach. It was just a magnificent weekend and special thanks should go to the organisers Des Hoy, Greg Campbell, Paul Butcher, Mat Quirk, Bruce Worboys and former Randwick players, Des Taylor and Gary Heskett.
