BarflyBuzz by Terry Smith

Organisers of the GPS opener between Joeys and Riverview (Joeys won 29-17) were aghast to discover Riverview Old Boys were planning five reunions at the ground and Joeys three. An immediate ban was placed on grog at the Hunter’s Hill grounds. There was Dan Vickerman clad in a Sydney University tracksuit chatting with coach Todd Louden a couple of hours before the big game against Manly. Surely the veteran of 63 Test caps could not be poised to make a surprise comeback after being out all season with a leg injury. But no, big Dan simply is helping out with some of the coaching, especially lineouts. Sadly, he hasn’t a clue if he will ever return to the rugby field. “It’s a matter of waiting,” he says. Another Wallaby who has been helping out at his old club Gordon is Andrew Blades, now an assistant to Australian coach Robbie Deans. Manly Rugby Foundation is being formed to provide funds for future playing and coaching development along similar lines to the one at Sydney University as tax effective as possible. The club’s former Wallabies Steve Williams and Bill Calcraft will be among the trustees. President David Begg announced the Foundation at the club’s rollicking lunch at the Four Seasons hotel where the old leg spinner Kerry O’Keeffe delighted four hundred people with a vintage performance. Michael Hawker lives life on the run. The other day the old Wallaby attended a lunch for the Super Rugby awards before dashing to the airport to catch a 4pm flight to London to attend a company business board meeting and watch the Olympics. Fearless forecasts: If there was any doubt (there isn’t) about Sam Harris being re-appointed coach of the Warringah Rats in 2013, it vanished after the 4537 demolition of Parramatta. Obviously John Manenti, Todd Louden, Tim Lane and Cam Blades respectively are assured of coaching at Eastwood, Sydney University, Manly and Southern Districts if Published by: Eric Spilsted Publishing PO Box 987 Spit Junction NSW 2088 Publisher/Editor: Jim Davis 9969 9294 0411 242 535 jim.davis@rugbynews.org

they want to. Brian Melrose? Wait and see but he says he wants to stay home for family reasons. Sydney University can be relied upon to produce something spectacular to mark the club’s 150th anniversary next year. Well, among the obligatory dinners and functions, how about a game against a team of international players, perhaps even as the curtain raiser to a Test match? It could happen. As befits a genuine sporting legend, David Lord’s portrait hangs on the wall at The Oaks hotel at Neutral Bay, his local for more than forty years. You can find it not far from the John Meillon veranda. A Colorado Springs newspaper reports that at Lithia Park, Ashland police responded to a report of two dogs running loose and attacking a duck. An officer cited a resident for the loose dogs and according to police records, the duck refused medical attention and left the area. No, we’re not kidding. Does anyone remember Brett Gosper, now 53, playing for the Australian Under 21s? He has been appointed to run the International Rugby Board’s world operations on a day-to-day basis as Chief Executive Officer. He was a kingpin at McCann, Erickson and according to the IRB, Brett played for the Racing Club of France and Australian Under 21s. Two tables left at the Trivett Sydney University luncheon at the Westin hotel on August 17 (Bledisloe Cup eve), with Sir Graham Henry, David Kirk, Pat Howard, Adam Spencer and Jim Maxwell topping the speakers. For tickets, call Ray Dearlove at 0418 236 875. Worried that a black eye might be affecting your good looks? According to the Sunday Times of London, a pack of frozen popcorn should be applied to hasten its departure. You may have spotted a T-shirt titled 2Brothers fitness. The brothers are Ben and Nick Batger, the Eastwood backline dazzlers. Ben is the radar-like goal-kicker who starts his routine by standing with his back to the goal posts, while Nick is the one with a season-ending broken thumb.

One very exciting, try-scoring player and a lifelong Rat

DAVID FELTSCHEER

Try scoring machine David Feltscheer has been a member of the Warringah Rugby Club his whole life – literally. “I went to my first Rats game as a six week old baby and was a Collaroy junior when I was four,” he says. After ditching cricket to focus on rugby all year round, Feltscheer worked his way through colts and is now in his fourth year of grade. He’s been scoring tries the whole time. “I came off the bench in my debut against Penrith and scored three tries in the second half,” he recalls. With eight five-pointers so far, he is well entrenched near the top of the try scorer’s list this season. What makes this feat more impressive is that Feltscheer has been hampered by injury for a fair chunk of the year. In the first half of the season, he played through the pain of a Morel-Lavallee lesion which his specialist said is an injury most commonly found in high-speed car crashes. Then in June, he had to pull out of the Sydney-Country representative game with a hamstring injury. “Those six weeks on the sidelines were pretty brutal,” he says. “I pushed myself to get back a bit early a couple of times which just delayed it so it was pretty frustrating.” An elusive runner with pace to burn, Feltscheer is now fully fit and made his comeback on the wing against Gordon in round 13 before moving back to his favoured 15 jersey the next week against Parramatta at Pittwater Park. He marked the occasion in emphatic fashion by scoring two tries and setting up three others in Warringah’s 45-37 triumph. The win takes the Rats to within striking distance of the top eight and with Feltscheer back and a full complement of Super Rugby players, optimism is high. “We’re quietly confident and if we can win our last two games, then anything can happen,” he says. It promises to be an exciting finale to the season and whatever does happen, expect to see Warringah’s fullback and lifelong member to be in the thick of the action.

Call it what it really is

Sydney Premier Rugby With more than 65% of Test and Super Rugby players in Australia coming from Sydney Premier Rugby competition clubs, this really is the Premier Rugby competition. And what better way to enjoy Premier Rugby than at the grounds, supporting your local team. SYDNEY RUGBY UNION.

Young Players Will Get a Kick Out of Old Boots. by Jim Webster

Enough has been said/written about Super Rugby since its beginnings way back in February, so I’ll not venture down that path again and, with our own Sydney Premier finals almost upon us, many might have begun thinking about their playing future. You don’t enjoy training nearly as much several wintry nights a week, those aching knees mightn’t stand any more jarring, the nose has been broken a few times and, wow, those cauliflower ears are really starting to ache and have probably brought an untimely end to your Hollywood ambitions. You don’t like admitting it, but you’re not what you used to be. There are exceptions on the fitness front; e.g. Peter Johnson, our Wallaby hooker and skipper through the sixties, still runs the occasional marathon! But we’re not all like him….. Besides, you’re now married, or have a partner, and you older fellows probably have a growing family to care for. You’re starting to think about life after rugby. After all, you’ve achieved all the milestones you’re likely to. You made that representative team you were aiming for, you’ve won a premiership or two, or else you’ve logged up over 100 games for the club. So, this might well be the end of the line. In other words it’s time to retire and toss those worn, trusty boots into the garbage bin. It’ll be a sad occurrence, but then they can’t be worn for anything else. Not even when gardening. Don’t! I plead with you; don’t throw them away. Other people desperately need them. I’m fully aware that many clubs do charitable work in one sense or another, but this following story did touch me more deeply than most. I was recently shown some correspondence–written to Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club–from a fellow named Lakoa from the Solomon Islands, who was a patient at the time at St Vincent’s Hospital, suffering renal failure. Back in the islands, Lakoa is heavily involved with one of the rugby clubs, Diesel Power, where he has been team manager for 15 years. He has also been 5

an administrator at national level, starting as a development officer and later becoming a national selector and manager of their national squad. Lakoa has had a long association with Easts in his role as development officer for Solomons Rugby and had the privilege of working with one of their coaches, Murray Cox. Through that association, Easts gave the islanders a set of jerseys, which their national team members still wear at training. Lakoa wrote that he had received a more recent request from his club concerning boots. “Boots are very expensive,” says Lakoa, “and a lot of players simply can’t afford a pair. “So I am humbly appealing to your club if you can help out, by passing on any of your players’ old boots. “If any players, former or current, had a pair of old boots they are no longer using and are willing to donate, then I will gladly receive them and send them home for our boys to use. “This will not only boost the boys’ morale, but also lift a heavy financial burden from these young players.” Lakoa says a pair of boots back home cost around $700-$1400 Solomon dollars and, with an average wage of just $350 a fortnight, “you can see why it’s not easy to own some rugby boots.” “I hope I am not burdening your club with such a request and I do understand if it’s turned down, given the current financial situation. But I can only hope that goodwill from your players will prevail and there will be some old boots available. “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance and look forward to your response.” Don’t worry, Lakoa. There’s plenty of old boots heading to the Solomons from Easts, but the club has also indicated that it’s more than willing to pass on old boots from anyone who’d like to donate. You can drop them off if driving by, or else post them, to Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club, O’Sullivan Road, Bellevue Hill, 2023. If you have questions, feel free to ring the club on 9327 2565. On behalf of Lakoa, thanks to everyone in our rugby family who can help.

Sydney Premier Rugby

MATCH PREVIEWS

by Terry Smith

There is a gaggle of Super Rugby players with a sprinkling of Wallabies in a revamped Sydney University team for this big game against premiers Eastwood at Millner Field. Ben McCalman comes into the second-row and fellow Wallaby Dave Dennis joins with Dave Hickey, who has completed a six-match suspension, and Tim Davidson in a new look back-row. Halfback Nick Stirzaker comes from the Melbourne Rebels to spark a backline that includes other Super Rugby players Tom Carter, Tom Kingston and Mitch Inman. With Eastwood, Manly and Sydney University assured of finishing with an all-important spot in the top four, Southern Districts today at Woollahra will bid to clinch the other spot by toppling Eastern Suburbs, who are coming off a horror run of six straight losses. Of course, eight clubs qualify for the play-offs, with the leading four getting a second bite at the cherry if beaten in the first round in which 1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3. With Easts sitting in seventh spot to Souths’ fourth, the draw for the remaining two rounds of the home-and-away games is: Eastwood: (58 points) Sydney University (h), Northern Suburbs (h) Manly (56 points): Northern Suburbs (h), Eastern Suburbs(h) Sydney University (52 points): Southern Districts (h)

Eastwood,

Southern Districts (46 points): Eastern Suburbs, Sydney University Northern Suburbs (39 points): Manly, Eastwood Parramatta (38 points): West Harbour, Gordon Eastern Suburbs (35 points): Southern Districts (h), Manly West Harbour (31 points): Parramatta, Randwick Warringah (28 points): Randwick, Penrith (h) Gordon (21 points): Penrith (h), Parramatta (h) Randwick (21 points): Warringah (h), West Harbour (h) Penrith (19 points): Gordon, Warringah

In this Round 15A ABC TV game, premiers Eastwood are at home to Sydney University in what many see as a grand final preview. However, don’t overlook the Manly Marlins, who have already beaten University and Southern Districts twice and

No pressure: Eastwood fullback Ben Batger is on 995 career points with the Woodies. Five to go for a 1000 point milestone.

Eastwood, as a genuine threat. They have size up front, zip in the backs and a coach in Tim Lane who knows how to win the big ones.

EASTWOOD v SYDNEY UNIVERSITY While University embark on a rush to get some of their Super Rugby players eligible for the play-offs, premiers Eastwood proceed smoothly towards the grand final, although there is uncertainty whether Wallaby Lachie Turner’s hamstring will have recovered in time. If the game is only half as absorbing as Eastwood’s 32-29 eclipse of the Students earlier in the season, it will be fierce and bubbling. University are more structured, but the Woodies are likely to explode into action when least expected. The battle of Eastwood’s Hugh Perrett, Miles McCaffrey and Gareth Palamo with the Universiy back-row of Tim Davidson, David Dennis and Dave 7

Hickey will have a big bearing on proceedings. Watch for Eastwood fullback Ben Batger, who has contributed 38 of his season’s tally of 127 in the last two games, start his goal-kicking routine by standing with his back to the posts.

EASTERN SUBURBS v SOUTHERN DISTRICTS “Here we have two struggling teams,” says Easts coach Mark Bakewell. “We’re in a hole, losing six games after winning six. At Woollahra Oval, the team with self-belief that gets momentum is the one that will win.” The Beasties go into the game on the back of a 38-20 loss to Northern Suburbs after they had led 18-5 before Norths pinched an intercept try. Still, there is no panic at Easts, with the only team change being Charlie Clifton for Pat Dellit. The clash of halfbacks Brendan McKibbin, of Easts. with Grayson Hart will be significant. Souths are without centre Nick Cummins and prop Tetera Faulkner, who have been called back to Perth by the Force to attend an awards night, but are hoping giant forward Kane Douglas will be allowed to back up after a week in the Wallaby camp. Souths play an adventurous brand of rugby backed by the boot of Rohan Saifoloi, the season’s leading pointscorer with 164. Earlier match: Souths 28-27 (at Forshaw Park)

Tip: Souths

MANLY v NORTHERN SUBURBS Unless Robbie Deans decides Michael Hooper should have a run in club rugby, the Manly team for this game at North Sydney will be unchanged from the one that toppled Sydney University 3725. If Hooper doesn’t take the field, look for his brother Richard, who swept in for a hat trick of tries against Sydney University, with the third the result of electrifying running. The only new face for Norths will be Peter Schuster on the wing. This game could be a cracker. Hard-edged Manly are coming off victories over Eastwood, Southern Districts and Sydney University while Norths have won five of their last six. After trailing 3-17, the Marlins demolished University 37-25 in spite of Scott Daruda being successful with only three of his seven kicks for goal. Norths are a tenacious bunch and boast the season’s top try-scorer in winger Corey Brown, who has 14. 8

At Manly Oval territory & goal kicking could be the winning edge. Flyhalf Scott Daruda will be looking to repeat his Marlins debut game form.

RANDWICK v WARRINGAH Warringah must win their remaining two games to sneak into a spot in the play-offs, but will have to do it without Wallaby prop Salesi Ma’afu, who is off to New Zealand to play in the ITM Cup. With players shunning the tackling pills, the Rats disposed of Parramatta 45-37 in the previous game, with fullback Dave Feltscheer scoring two tries and giving the pass for three others in an exhilarating display. Watch this young man. He can play. `Earlier match: Warringah 26-13 (at Pittwater)

Tip: Warringah

GORDON v PENRITH Penrith are coming off a big loss to Randwick, while Gordon have been lamenting a penalty they say should have been awarded to them in the dying stages of the game against West Harbour but wasn’t. The upshot was a Wests player shooting over for a try, the goal was kicked and Wests won 27-26. It’s tough to pick. The young Gordon team is unchanged for this game at Chatswood and

Penrith are unpredictable. Rival coaches John and Matt Briggs (they’re brothers) will have their traditional schooner of beer on the result.

Fearless forecast: There will be a large number of tries in this game to be shown on the ABC TV cameras. The only question is which team will score the most. Boosted by the return of halfback Kaleb Rech and the dashing Daniel Yakapo, Parramatta will have All Black Sosene Anesi to supply the X-factor in a roving role from the wing. COLTS REPORT by Hamish McCathie

As we have a split round in grade this is the last colts report until the semi finals. With two games remaining it has been a very short season especially for those that don’t get to compete in the finals.

11. B rad Curtis (Eastwood): Is deadly at fullback or wing. A try scoring machine.

To mix things up I am going to pick a hypothetical combined colt’s team. My criterion is that each player has played most of their games in colts. I will also spread the love and name at least one player from each club.

13. Aiden Anderson (Randwick): Gets over the ad line and makes great yards.

1. Allan Alaalatoa (Wests): Usually a tight head who is an Aussie under 20 representative.

15. Lachlan Fox (Penrith): Has never stopped trying, has hit the line hard and a Solid defender.

2. Tim Reid (Uni): The Burradoo boy has had a great season and is a terrific leader. 3. Ephraim Lesa (Easts): The eighteen year old Victorian is definitely a player of the future. 4. H ugh Sinclair (Norths): A prolific line out winner who has had a fine season. 5. W ill Munro (Randwick): Can play lock or blindside breakaway. A very good season.

12. Paul Asquith (Souths): Always defends well and gets over the advantage line.

14. James Dargaville (Uni): A class above at outside or wing. Terrific player.

Coaches: Ian Moyes (Eastwood): Is the first to put in his detailed report each week. B e n Tu i p u l o t u ( Pe n r i t h ) : H i s enthusiasm and results have been awesome. Referee: Antony Hastie: Antony always has a smile in his face.

6. R hys Dombkins (Manly): Is a power of strength and is a very physical player.

Good luck to all teams in the finals series. It looks like a Sydney University and Northern Suburbs Grand Final however Randwick has a huge hope.

7. J ack Walters (Norths): “Piggy” has stolen more ball than anyone else in any grade this year.

My smoky is Eastwood who when they click they can beat anyone. Good luck to all teams.

8. Pierce Howell (Warringah): Another physical player who has led his team well.

Coaches please forward your match reports to hamish@pulsemarkets.com

9. Matthew Hayter (Gordon): Rewarded for a great season and his organisational skills. 10. J ake Holman (Parramatta): Has played scrum half or fly half whose defence is awesome. 19

Eric Tweedale, second oldest surviving Wallaby (1946 to 1949), is as sharp as a tack and one of the nicest guys you could meet. This year he accepted the offer to be Patron of the Parramatta Club and on the recent Back to Parra Day presented jerseys to the title-winning Parramatta U17s side who were victorious at the NSWJRU State Championships. Eric is pictured above with the team.

WILSO’S WHISPERS by Bob Wilson

Former North’s Operations Manager & Coach, Grant “Boof” Richardson is heading to Nepal with a group called “Habitat for Humanity” where they will assist in the building of houses for the underprivileged. They will be away for a few weeks while some of the children are also sponsored for educational purposes. “Habitat for Humanity” operates all over the world while I have told Boof, who was once known as “Sir Lunchalot”, that there is no workers compensation over there. Seriously this is a wonderful gesture by Grant who is to be congratulated on his venture. For further information have a look at the web-site http://www.habitat.org. au/grantnepal Wallaby Forwards Coach, Andrew Blades was the guest of the Manly Rugby “Front Rowers” Club when he passed on his wisdom to front rowers from the Under 16’s, Colt’s and Seniors Grades last Monday. While on front-rowers the Randwick Prop’s Annual Luncheon will be held again this year on Friday, 14th September. For those who have never attended or don’t know what it’s about, the Prop’s Lunch is a luncheon that starts at the famous Covent Garden Hotel in Chinatown followed by a feast at a nearby fine Chinese eatery. The annual event has been going now at least 35 years but probably longer. You don’t have to be a prop or ex-prop to attend, everyone is welcome. It is a great day to meet up with your old playing mates, other ex players and supporters for a quiet drink, some fine food and a bit of intellectual discussion on the good old days, the modern game and of course referees. Still down at Coogee the Randwick Rugby Club is pleased to announce that Dave Rogers has accepted the position as Club Chaplain. The idea is that David will be available to all players, supporters and members of the club. He is seen as being of real benefit to the players as he is an independent person they can chat to on any matter. David will attend Grade and Colts practice throughout. Players are encourages to introduce themselves to David. The ‘Wicks are delighted to welcome Dave and his family to the Randwick Rugby Club. Dave lives up the road from the Rugby Club in Coogee with his 28

David Rogers, Meredith and son Billy.

wife Meredith and one-year-old son Billy and is the Minister of St Luke's in Clovelly. Several clubs already have a Chaplain in place. Maybe the ‘Wicks, who have had a disastrous season, should have got the Chaplain on board earlier in the year. There may have been a few more victories! Someone spotted 'Wicks legend, Jeff Sayle near their Major Sponsor, Peter’s of Kensington. Surely he wasn’t going shopping! No he was going the long way to the Dong Dong Chinese Restaurant at Kingsford for his weekly luncheon. Army Rugby will compete in the International Defence 7’s Tournament in Denver, Colorado next month. The Army side will field two men’s teams, AARU Green and AARU Gold while other participating teams include the Chinese Army, UK Air Force, UK Army, South African Defence Forces and the French Defence Forces. The event is being hosted by the City of Glendale and Randwick players Jason Harrington, Tony Luxford and Tait O'Sullivan will take part. Australia’s second oldest living Wallaby, Eric Tweedale, now Club Patron of the Parramatta Two Blues was the man, years ago, behind the forming of the Parramatta Juniors. Congratulations to North’s Andrew Stannard who played his 50th Grade game for the Club last week. I f you have any stories or news please email bobw@wireless2way.com.au or call: 0438 416 222.
