The keepers of the Guinness Book of Records will be salivating when they discover the Northern Suburbs back-row of AJ Gilbert, Will Brame and Jordan Smiler have celebrated their birthdays on the same day. Surely it is unmatched in the world of rugby. On June 19, skipper Gilbert turned 25, Smiler 27 and Brame a more venerable 32. After training that night, they were called to a team meeting where a birthday cake and case of beer awaited. Trust the eagle eye of Jon Geddes to spot the Welsh tourists lunching at the Harbord Beach hotel after a training session at Freshwater beach. The squad devoured 17kg of blue-eyed cod, flathead and ocean perch, 12kg of crumbled calamari, 10kg of potato salad, 18kg of beef sausages and two mammoth fruit salad platters. Not a leek in sight. Phil Waugh? He has embarked on a career in retail banking with the Commonwealth but still pops in to the odd training session to help out his old club Sydney University. Officials are concerned that payments of $500 and upwards for players to turn out in Subbies could be getting out of hand. They got the mix right at the Australian Schools Fund-Raising lunch at the Four Seasons hotel. With wickedly witty comedian Paul Martell in excellent form as he opened proceedings, how could it not be? “One moment Tiger Woods was chasing Jack Nicklaus’ record for major championships ,” said Martell. “Then he was chasing Hugh Hefner.” Sally Loane was the perfect compere and old All Black Stu Wilson, former Springbok coach Jake White, Gordon Bray AM and Peter Robinson formed a lively panel. There was X-certificate stuff, too, with Stu sending an absolutely scandalous message to Tony Shaw. White told the gathering he wanted to return to international coaching before he was finished and was quite happy having only one Brumby in the Wallaby team last Saturday. “That’s good,” he said. “Only one chance Published by: Eric Spilsted Publishing PO Box 987 Spit Junction NSW 2088 Publisher/Editor: Jim Davis 9969 9294 0411 242 535 jim.davis@rugbynews.org

of getting an injury.” Plenty of Wallabies on deck, too, with Dan Vickerman winning the rugby trivia. Still on the Schools. Tonga are here next month for four matches, including a game against Australia at St Mary’s Rugby League Stadium. This is an aperitif to a five match trip to Fiji and New Zealand, with the latter on October 6 in Auckland out to avenge their 24-19 loss to the Australian boys last October. Phil Blake made a rush trip from Perth where he is coach of the Western Force to watch son Harrison, a pupil at St Augustine’s College, playing for ISA Schools against CHS. He wore the No 13 jumper. On Brett Stewart’s $3.5 million offer from London Irish to switch codes, Phil thinks the league star would be a sensation in the fullback role, explaining, “Brett’s support play and speed are things you can’t teach.” An old rugby prop was stopped by the police at 2am. Policeman: “Where are you driving at this hour?” Old prop: “I’m on my way to a lecture on the dangers of alcohol and keeping excessively late hours.” Policeman: “And who might be giving such a lecture at 2am?” Old prop: “That would be my wife.” It has not escaped the attention of a couple of rival clubs that in five years of coaching down the grades at Sydney University, Ray Hudd has compiled the amazing record of only nine losses in 104 games, including two unbeaten years in Colts. His third grade side suffered their first loss this season when beaten by Eastwood on Sunday. Sydney University will hold a Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at RPA charity day at their home game on July 14 in recognition of a wonderful man who inspired so many with his work and personal battle against cancer. It’s a most worthy cause. Wedding bells forced two withdrawals from Test matches last weekend, with Springbok Frans Steyn a drop out from the return clash with England and Scotland’s John Barclay spurning a Test cap against Samoa because of the uncertainty of getting home on time.

112kg, versatile and a consistent performer...

MITCH LEES Twenty-three year-old Eastwood forward Mitch Lees is nothing if not versatile. A league player as a kid, he switched to union at Oak Hills High School. “I only started playing rugby in year 8 because all my friends were playing,” he says. As if switching codes wasn’t enough, he made a drastic positional change too. “I was a fullback in league and a forward in union,” he explains. “I just kept growing so they put me in the second row.” He carried that adaptability into first grade at Eastwood when he graduated from colts in 2009. “When I moved to grade, I made myself a number eight and number six. I always enjoy playing off the side of the scrum, it gives you a bit more freedom to run around, make a few tackles and turnovers,” he says. He has won a premiership since then and this year, his positional flexibility earned him selection to the Sydney representative side. Although he plies his trade in the second row for Eastwood, he played blindside flanker for Sydney and hopes of one day progressing to higher honours. “I’m very thankful to (Sydney coach) Matt Briggs for giving me the opportunity,” says Lees. “It was definitely a very fast match but I thought I played a good game.” Lees’ versatility isn’t limited to the football field either. He works fulltime at Westpac as a customer services representative, but a year ago he was a mechanic – a hobby he is still passionate about. “I love working on my car and one day I want to build my own streetcar.” Lees says his dad – a former reserve grade South Sydney league player – is one of his role models. “Dad loves it. He’s only missed one game, when he and mum went away for their anniversary.” At Eastwood, he looks up to stalwarts Hugh Perrett and Ben Hand. “They’re both great teachers and Hugh’s leadership is something I’d like to model myself on one day.” If you’re at the game today or watching on TV, you’ll be able to catch Lees in action against Southern Districts – whatever position he plays.

2013 to see change to the way scrums are set. A t long last! by Jim Webster

Wales have headed back to the valleys, very saddened boyos, and have left us all wanting–no, demanding – a major change to the scheduling of our Test matches. What a fantastic daylight atmosphere at Allianz Stadium last Saturday! An absolute sea of gold jerseys, scarves and beanies, stands packed to bursting point, countless families and young people and then everyone having so much time for post-match enjoyment. So pleasurable was it that there needs to be the strongest moves to make one or two afternoon Test matches at Moore Park a permanent feature of our annual rugby timetable. Besides this, let’s not forget we did indeed beat the Six Nations champions, even if by the smallest margin, thus making for a series whitewash. The only criticisms I’d have was the unnecessary intrusion of South African referee Craig Joubert (his arm almost fell off waving for 24 penalties and three free kicks) and the ridiculous amount of time wasted in the second half by those collapsed scrums, with the Wallabies’ front row constantly trying to chew weeds from the turf. But while little publicity has been afforded this rather new development, moves are officially underway by the International Rugby Board to change the way the scrum is being set and the annoying waste of time that causes. At long, long last… A revised scrum engagement sequence will be trialled globally following unanimous backing from the IRB’s scrum steering group, which incorporated players’ representatives, former players and other experts. Among the group is Australia’s wellrespected Brian O’Shea. It will incorporate the shorter sequence of ‘crouch, touch, set’. In other words, the ‘pause’ segment will be sent to the dust bin. The revised process will be trialled from the start of next season in each hemisphere. The sequence will see the front rows crouch then touch and, using their outside arm, each prop touches the point of the opposing prop’s outside 5

shoulder. The props then withdraw their arms. The referee will then call ‘set’ when the front rows are ready. The front rows may then set the scrum. This sequence was one of six new ideas that were extensively researched at six different levels of the game, including women’s rugby, and was found to be the most successful. IRB rugby committee chairman and former All Blacks skipper Graham Mourie said: “Most people accept the scrum is currently a problematic area, accounting for roughly 17% of match time in elite rugby and with more than 50% of scrums resulting in collapses or resets. “The IRB is committed to addressing these issues and has tasked the specialist group to identify the causes and solutions. This is a positive first step, but it should be noted that we must wait for the outcome of the three-year project before we can take a holistic approach to the scrum.” IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “The scrum is a complex, dynamic area and it was very clear from the scrum group that there is no quick and easy fix. David Barnes, the International Rugby Players’ Association rep on the scrum group, said: “The number of scrum resets in the elite game has reached an unprecedented level and the new threestep process is a significant advance in trying to address the issue. “Whilst it is vital for the scrum to remain an integral, combative element of the game, the players fully support the IRB research into reducing the number of resets, while also ensuring player welfare remains the key priority.” Graham Rowntree, RFU forwards coach, said:”We need to have less collapses and resets and anything that can improve this vital part of our game should be applauded. I will be very interested to see how the trial goes.” And so will all players and supporters alike, who have become so tired of collapsed scrums ruining our game. While the ‘crouch, touch, set’ sequence has been selected for global trial, two other sequences (not yet identified) will continue to be examined. Meantime, the focus this weekend shifts back to Premier Club Rugby while the Waratahs enjoy a bye. 5

Sydney Premier Rugby

MATCH PREVIEWS

by Terry Smith

With the competition approaching the business end, Southern Districts, a mere two points from the lead, have been hit by players heading overseas to boost their careers. For starters, flanker Sean Doyle has left for Ulster in Ireland and halfback Dewet Roos gone to Narbonne in France. Winger Nicky Price, who swept in for two tries against Eastern Suburbs last Saturday, makes his farewell appearance in today’s top of the table clash against Eastwood at Millner Field before heading to a French club. Souths also are aware of the impending departure of Waratah back Brackin Karauria-Henry to Japan. With club championship points determining the issue, the competition will split into two groups after this round (Easts v Norths has been deferred until next Saturday) to play the last five rounds in two groups, the top six and remaining six, with each club playing the other five in its group. The play-offs will be fought out by the top eight clubs, with placings being decided by accumulated premiership ladder points, NOT the club championship points. It already has been determined that the top group will be comprised of Sydney University, Eastwood, Northern Suburbs, Easts, Manly and Souths. Parramatta have paid dearly for not having a team in Second or Third Colts. Conversely, Norths are fifth in the club championships and seventh in premiership points. The ABC’s TV cameras will be at Millner Field where competition leaders Eastwood will attempt to turn back the challenge of Southern Districts. Both teams play bold attacking rugby and the game should be a cracker. Those who saw premiers Eastwood tip out Sydney University 32-29 in a classic encounter last Sunday at University Oval are adamant the two clubs will figure in another grand final clash. Careful, chaps. Coach Cameron Blades has done a great job reviving the fortunes of Souths and Easts and Manly are capable of upsetting any of the top clubs.

7

Matt Swann switches to No.8 for Souths

time. However, if he is in the run-on team, he will play on the wing. Perhaps coach John Manenti will get word from Wallaby coach Robbie Deans on what he would like to see done with Turner, who has missed most of the season due to a hamstring injury.

EASTWOOD v SOUTHERN DISTRICTS

The Waratahs are putting flanker Chris Alcock in cotton wool for next Saturday’s clash with the Brumbies, resulting in Eastwood switching Gareth Palamo from No 8 to flanker and bringing big second-rower Tom Alexander to the back of the scrum. Jed Gillespie is a new prop for the Woodies and Jared Barry will fill the second-row vacancy.

Recuperating Wallaby Lachie Turner, who took the field in the second half of Eastwood’s big clash with Sydney University, will back up for this game, but a decision is being delayed on the length of his playing

Souths will be without their Waratah pair Atieli Pakalani, who has returned to Tonga for his mother’s funeral, and giant second-rower Lopeti Timani, who is being saved for the Brumbies game. The 7

extremely gifted Ben Volavola, usually a fly-half, is the new fullback and Matt Swann switches from flanker to take Timani’s place at No 8. Souths are coming off a remarkable win over Easts in which they trailed 0-19 before surging back to lead 28-19 before Easts half-back Luke Irwin plunged over for a try in the corner in the dying stages to cut the leeway to 28-27. With the tension dripping, Angus Sinclair missed the kick from the touchline. “We made 183 tackles to 83,” Blades said. “Good practice for Eastwood, you might say.” A danger man for Souths is fly-half Rohan Saifoloi, who tops the Sydney point-scorers with 135.

Tip: Eastwood

University will have Jeremy Tilse back at prop and have plumped for Angus Roberts at fullback ahead of Waratah Daniel Halangahu, who will come off the reserve bench. Parramatta was shell-shocked after previously winless Randwick piled up 28 unanswered points in the second half to set up a 42-26 upset at Coogee. Not surprisingly, coach Glen Christini has wielded the selection axe as well as making several positional changes. “The boys went to sleep in the second half,” he said. “They lost it.” With Sam Yakapo back at fly-half, Tom Woods returns to fullback. Evan Olmstead is back in the second-row, skipper Andrew Cox and second-rower Adam Coleman the new flankers and Maile Latukefu chosen at No 8.

Tip: Sydney University

WARRINGAH v PENRITH Nobody takes Penrith lightly any more. In fact, coach Matt Briggs believes his rumbustious Emus will win a play-off spot if they can dispose of Warringah in this game at Rat Park and follow up by winning three of their five games when clubs split into two groups. “They could do it, too,” said Briggs’ brother John, who coached the Gordon team beaten 32-24 by Penrith last Sunday. “They’re robust, fast and very enthusiastic,” says John. “They’re playing with lots of confidence.” Obviously a danger man for the Rats will be fullback Hamish Angus, who scored all 19 points in the 35-19 loss to Norths to take his season’s tally to 112.

Tip: Penrith

GORDON v MANLY

Maile Latukefu to play No.8 for Parramatta.

PARRAMATTA v SYDNEY UNIVERSITY Just back from playing in the World Under 20 championship in South Africa, Benn Melrose, whose dad Brian was a Waratah and uncle Tony a Wallaby, will make his first grade debut for Sydney University at No 8 against Parramatta, for whom the Melrose brothers both played. “Benn has a head for rugby,” says Uni coach Todd Louden, “but that’s not surprising when you look at his bloodlines.” 8

Manly coach Tim Lane says he isn’t underestimating the young, injury-hit Gordon outfit. Some idea of their woes can be gained from being without five second-rowers last week, with two flankers each playing there for half a game. Still, the Highlanders haven’t been losing by big margins. This week the captaincy has gone to halfback Terry Preston. Manly jumped a spot to fourth after a 41-21 victory over West Harbour and get a further boost from the return of important forwards Jordy Reid and Tevita Metuisela for this game at Chatswood. Lane knows how to get a team up for the big ones. Watch Manly in the coming weeks.

WEST HARBOUR v RANDWICK

next week’s

GAMES

Flush with their first victory of the season, Randwick get a further boost from the return of fullback Ethan Ford after suspension for this game at Concord.

Round 11 (Completion) SATURDAY, JULY 7

Coach John Maxwell thinks the men in myrtle green have turned the corner with their 42-26 eclipse of sixth placed Parramatta in which they put together 28 unanswered points in the second half.

Eastern Suburbs v Northern Suburbs at Woollahra Oval (ABC TV Game)

In fact, he thinks that if Randwick continue to attack things with such verve they could pinch one of the two play-off spots from the grouping of the lower clubs in which each plays the other. Wests get a big plus from the return of gun hooker Paul Ngauamo, who looked the goods when playing for City against Country.

Talented West Harbour fullback, Shaun Treweek.

COLTS REPORT by Hamish McCathie

After Norths Colts play Eastern Suburbs today the Norths club are hosting a fundraising event raising money for the Fresh Tracks Foundation. This foundation provides care for people under 25 with an acquired Brain injury, such as Sam Carson who is an old Shore and Norths boy. After the three matches at Bon Andrews Oval Norths are having an after match function at Cabana bar starting at 6pm. Good work from Hugh Sinclair and all the Norths colts. GORDON 57 V PENRITH 5

After an early try by Gordon open side breakaway Hugh Donaldson, Scott Purcell at fullback again showed why he is one of the most promising broken field runners in the Colts competition when he fielded a ball close to halfway, then stepped and zigzagged his way to the line. From the kick-off Gordon were again deep on attack and blind side breakaway Andrew Sears scored the first of his two tries for the day setting up a 21 – 0 lead after only 12 minutes. Penrith toiled hard and were rewarded late in the game with a try after sustained pick and drive pressure on the Highlander line. However the day was all Gordon’s with a total of 9 tries scored from some brilliant length of the field running and sharp passing. For the Highlanders the back row trio of Donaldson, Sears and captain Adam Vilimaa were dynamic, inside center Henry Carmichael made a successful return to the side after being sidelined for many weeks with injury, while the former Newington scrum half Ollie Smythe demonstrated his versatility by playing a full game in 2nds at flyhalf, where he scored the first of Gordon’s tries before a full game in firsts, scoring 2 tries on the wing before finishing the match at scrum half. NORTHERN SUBURBS 33 V WARRINGAH 5

pack that really challenged the Norths ruck defence but it was Norths set piece and wide attack that led to most tries. North's enjoyed a huge advantage in possession and territory but Warringah's stodgy defence and North's handling errors meant it was close up until 15 mins to go. Best for North's were Mus Freeman in getting the monkey off his back by scoring a double and Christian Jones played well. SYDNEY UNIVERSITY 41 V EASTWOOD 21

Uni started like the highly trained and highly competent outfit they are, whilst Eastwood began with errors and a lack of confidence brought about by the frequent changes forced on the team. Despite mostly resilient defence the Woods found themselves down 0 – 22. Eastwood started to gain some composure and momentum and were able to score a try before half time for 7–22. For the rest of the game it was a fairly even contest. Eastwood added to the Brad Curtis try with touchdowns to Daniel Minto and Aisea Taufa. The Woodies best were lock Ben Renshaw and centres Junior Leo and Micky Tamone. The Students best were Tim Reid (high work rate at No.2), Declan Smith (strong finishing on the wing) and Jake Gordon (consistently stressing Eastwood defence at No.9). OTHER GAMES

In other games Easts beat Souths 20 to 12 after being down 12-0 with 30 minutes to go. Randwick thrashed Parramatta 83-0 with Tom Nicholson scoring a classy double and West Harbour defeated Manly 37-32 which was a great effort. THIS SATURDAY

The Inaugural Norths Colts Charity Cup

Sam Carson

The Sam Carson Fresh Tracks Cup Today, Northern Suburbs Colts will play a Charity Cup match against Eastern Suburbs Colts in aid of Norths’ community partner The Fresh Tracks Foundation. The Fresh Tracks Foundation works towards

improving the quality of life of young Australians suffering from Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) – a cause especially close to the hearts of many Norths players and supporters since Clubman and former Colts player Sam Carson sustained an ABI after falling from the roof of a four-storey building in October 2009. Following the three colts fixtures at Bon Andrews Oval, a fundraising event commencing at 7pm will be held at Cabana Bar and Lounge, the home of Norths Rugby, to raise funds for The Fresh Tracks Foundation. Entry to the event will cost $10, with discounted drinks available throughout the evening. An invitation has been extended to all players, members, supporters and friends to join the Norths Colts in supporting this fantastic cause.

For Parramatta, the only way by Brendan Bradford

In round five this season, Parramatta achieved something that had eluded them for 18-years. For the first time since 1994, the Two Blues won three games in a row. Now after ten rounds they have five wins – the same amount as they’ve managed for past two seasons combined – and sit sixth on the table. It’s still too early to call it success, but the turnaround in fortune is the result of some significant off field changes. When a major sponsor walked away in 2009, triggering an exodus of players as well as the all important army of volunteers that every club relies on, Parramatta were on the verge of being unceremoniously dumped from the competition. The second oldest club in Sydney was in crisis mode. “We ended up at the bottom of the barrel and pretty much had to start from scratch,” says General Manager, Michael Bell. “We had some really good people that fought the good fight on behalf of the club.” Although they found a sponsor on the eve of the 2010 season, they didn’t win a game all year.

26

Two Blues captain, Andrew Cox.

First grade captain Andrew Cox remained loyal to the club he played his junior footy at. “I think 2009 and 2010 were the hardest,” he remembers. “It’s not easy when you’re getting smashed by 60 or 70 points every week.” In 2011, with Merrylands RSL as a major sponsor and New Zealand-born coach Glen Christini in charge, things began to look up.

Man at the heart of revival: coach Glen Christini.

“We had a core group of players and some dedicated coaches who really stepped up and we knew it would turn around eventually,” said Cox. “You’ve just gotta get through those few years of getting belted every week.” There are several reasons for the uptick. “We just looked within and said, ‘let’s build from the ground up,’” Bell says. “It’s all about getting that off field stability.” Stability comes from having an able board, committed coaches, hardworking volunteers and dedicated sponsors. At Parramatta, these things combine to create something bigger than the club itself. “We’ve had more of a focus around the community this year,” says Bell. “Players are pitching in, running events and fundraising. We’ve got a really strong relationship with our junior committee and one of the proudest things for me personally was getting the

was up. And up it has been. women’s team back. There’s a bit of a buzz and a really good feeling around the place. We want to be the club for everybody.” Andrew Cox can attest to that. He and a couple of other players went up to Orange during the long weekend to coach the Parramatta Under-14s State Championship side. With planning underway to ensure Parramatta’s considerable amount of young talent stays at the club (Parramatta is one of the biggest junior districts in Sydney and their Under-17s recently won the NSWJRU State Championships) the future certainly looks bright.

Tuggeranong where he was coaching in Canberra and he ticked a couple of boxes,” Bell explains. “He brings the best out of the boys and I think he’s the best coach in the competition.” Andrew Cox says professionalism and man management are some of Christini’s main assets. “We’ve always had talent out at Parra but it’s nothing if you can’t put it into a structured gameplan,” says the captain.

Damien Fakafanua Iese Leota

What Michael Bell calls a ‘buzz’, dynamic centre Iese Leota calls a brotherhood. “We’re trying to build something out here,” he says. “The club, culture and community are what have made me stay here.” Halfback, Kaleb Rech moved to Sydney last year. Advised by Christini, who coached him in Canberra, Rech joined Parramatta and hasn’t looked back since. “Everyone was really welcoming and they opened their arms like I was another family member,” says Rech. “It’s a great bunch of blokes and the volunteers are great people as well.” Although strength lies in the community and the future rests with the juniors, the success of a football club is ultimately measured by its first grade results. The man at the heart of this is Glen Christini. 27“We’d been watching the style of play of

Two Blues speedster, Damien Fakafanua is testament to just how well regarded Christini is. The two were originally paired up at Northland in New Zealand before Fakafanua moved to Australia. When the opportunity arose to play under Christini again at Parramatta in 2011, the Tongan representative says the decision was a no-brainer – even though the side had only won two games in two seasons. “With a coach like Glen Christini and a club like Parramatta, with such a rich history, the only way was up,” says Fakafanua. There is an overwhelming feeling at Parramatta that the club is moving in the right direction. Sitting in sixth position and with an eye on the finals, you wouldn’t bet against them launching another three game (or longer) winning streak sometime soon. Photos: www.seiserphotography.com 27

WILSO’S WHISPERS by Bob Wilson

North’s Rugby player, Seti Tafua suffered a serious neck injury whilst playing Reserve Grade against Warringah last Saturday. Seti is currently being treated at Royal North Shore Hospital where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure to his neck. Seti is showing some positive signs however, it will be some time before he knows the full extent of his injury. His family who live in Wellington flew in last weekend and are at Seti’s side. The Club held an information and support evening last Monday for all players, members and friends of Seti. It included an update from the Club’s Doctor, Stephen Freeman and the ARU’s Gary Speckman who spoke on what Seti can expect during his recovery process. The North’s Rugby Club would like to thank all the people who have supported Seti since last week and especially the staff at Royal North Shore Hospital. The Club will continue to provide updates to players and members as news comes to hand. The Rugby fraternity thoughts are with Seti and his family and we all wish him all the very best. The Randwick Rugby Club held the “Roast of Jeff Sayle Luncheon“ last week at the Tattersall’s Club. Former Wallaby and Randwick player, Simon Poidevin, was the MC. Alan Jones and many former Randwick legends entertained the audience. Alan spoke about how Jeffrey Leonard Sayle was, is and still should be what Club Rugby is all about. The audience was left in no doubt who Alan Jones thought was responsible for the state of Club Rugby in Australia at present. Everyone agreed that Australian Rugby needed a solid base to build from otherwise the roof would fall in. Long time friend, Denis Cleary spoke about their 60 year old friendship. Mark and Gary Ella told stories of Sayley attempting to referee them when they were kids. They said “ Sayley based himself on the half-way line and did not move. Well nothing much has changed except it is the bar he doesn’t move from”. Also, former Randwick

28

player Shaun Berne spoke about touring with Jeff overseas on a Randwick tour and the fact that Sayley had never called him by his real name. He kept on calling him Johnny for 20 years (after Sean’s Dad the former Wallaby). Sayley had the right of reply and he had the audience in stitches recalling many stories from the past 60 odd years. Also special thanks to Michael Radziowsky who assisted with the organizing of such a great day. Congratulations, Jeffrey Leonard Sayle you are not only a Randwick legend but a true Rugby legend. It was back to the good old days last Saturday with a beautiful sunny day, the pubs and restaurants packed in Paddington before and after the game. It was a great atmosphere for an entertaining day at an afternoon Rugby Union Test match. Only problem someone forgot to tell the referee. He would have had a dry mouth blowing the whistle all afternoon… an absolute penaltyathon. An old former First Grade hooker said to his mate when leaving the stadium “When are they going to get fair dinkum and have the half-backs put the ball in the middle of the scrum so the hookers can strike for the ball and try and get a tighthead”. It’s “Back to Parra” Day this afternoon when the Two Blues take on the Students. Australia’s oldest living Wallaby, Eric Tweedale will be attendance along with many famous faces from the Premiership sides from the 70’s. What a mess this is… London Welsh won the 2011-2012 RFU Championship beating Cornish Pirates in both games but has been denied promotion to the Top Division as it did not meet the criteria. They have appealed the decision not to promote them to the AVIVA Premiership. At present the Newcastle Falcons, former Wallaby, Matt Burke’s old club, hasn’t been relegated despite finishing in last place.
