@JOSHUAWITHERS

COLOURFUL HISTORY BEHIND WEDDING TRADITION.

Bridal parties exist because of the historical threat of real actual demons attacking weddings. True story. Our ancestors used to be stressed about evil forces attacking the good things in life, like marriage ceremonies. Now I’m not going to be the guy to downplay the threat of demons, I still swear to this day that it was a demon that convinced my little brother to stick a fork in an electrical plug, despite mum and dad never believing the story. To reduce this wedding-demon-threat, everyone thought it would be a great idea to dress up a few friends in formal attire to look a little bit like the bride and groom. Then when the evil spirits arrived to interrupt the nuptials they’d be confused because there were so many men in suits and women in dresses. Ta'da, the bridal party was invented. Today, a demon destroying a wedding happens about as often as UFOs appearing in the night sky, Nessie popping up out of a lake, and Bigfoot strolling through Paluma - never. If the demon confusing worked, there were a few other menaces for a future husband and wife to overcome. Of course there was the reality that the bride had probably been stolen from her normal life

and quite literally was being actually ‘given away’ by her father to a groom she was meeting as the veil was lifted. The average teenage girl at the time probably already had a few admirers. Upon finding out that this young lady was being wed, those sword-wielding suitors would often jump into action and come to stop the vows being exchanged. This called for the groom’s best sword fighting friend to step in, the best man. If the celebrant of old was about to be interrupted, the best man would swing out his sword and stop any heart-throb from ruining this sweet union.

a rip at the gown. So in an effort to leave clothed the new Mrs would throw her bouquet of flowers to the crowd - introducing the bouquet toss.

After reading these crazy stories you’re probably wondering why you’re employing so many archaic, meaningless traditions into your wedding. Or you could be questioning why child services didn’t separate me from You have the opportunity to Zac and the power point. Both are create your O W N personal good questions.

marriage celebration – a meaningful party that could mean hanging out with your best friends in suits and dresses for the day, O R N O T.

For a boy and girl saying ‘I do’ and finally becoming husband and wife, there was a lot to plan for in centuries gone by. We’re not even at the reception yet where the groom would prove his dominion by smashing a wedding cake over his bride’s head. The bride would then try to escape the reception with her husband and dress in one piece like a shark evading Chinese waters with its fins intact. Much like eating shark fin soup, it was really good luck for a wedding guest to secure a piece of the bride's dress. As she was leaving everyone would have

We live in such a liberated time where you have the opportunity to create your own personal marriage celebration – a meaningful party that could mean hanging out with your best friends in suits and dresses for the day, or not. You have complete control over the existence of a bridal party, how many guests, or even if you drop the traditional plans and have a fun pop-up wedding! The fact remains: this is your wedding, with or without the demons, and you get to choose when it happens, where it happens, how it happens and what it all means when your mix comes together. •

STORY KATHERINE POWELL PHOTOS / ABOVE ELLE DS PHOTOGRAPHY

Glamping or Glamorous camping is not necessarily a new phenomenon, but it's sure to say it's gaining momentum. Glamping allows you to enjoy the aspects of camping we all know and love like the closeness to the outdoors, experiencing nature, campfire songs and toasted marshmallows, without the hard work that comes with lugging tent equipment, sleeping on the wet ground, navigating a sleeping bag or dealing with drop bears (wait...)

Not only is glamping a happy medium, but committing to a lifetime of holy matrimony is expensive. With the average cost of an Australian wedding reportedly being over $65,000* it’s no wonder the extravagant see-the-world honeymoons are becoming a forgotten tradition. Glamping comes in many forms and you can do it anywhere in the world which means there’s sure to be a glamping alternative that provides just the right amount of nature and nurture at a price that won’t have you living on baked beans for a month.

From Happy Glamper tents in the Mornington Peninsula to tepees pitched in Portugal, pods in Patagonia and domes in Chile – pick your If a honeymoon without your hair WHILE YOUR IDEA destination and then pick straighter hasn't scared you away, why not of the perfect honeymoon your dwelling. BREATHE.

If you are breathing in, you know you're alive, and that is a good start! Breathing is the most basic act of life, but when we become stressed or agitated our breathing becomes shallow, short and fast. If our breath is rushed our mind is stressed. Equally, if we can slow our breath down we can calm down a racing mind and start to feel better. The deeper your breath is, the more air you will take into your body. This means more oxygen for your brain helping you to think more logically and efficiently. Believe it or not, many of us are terrible at breathing, and there are classes to help you learn how to breath better. In Yoga we call this practice Pranayama. Prana in Yoga means 'fundamental life force' and 'yama' means control. So breathing techniques help put us back in control Breathing techniques of our life force, helping us to direct our energy towards that which serves us. Plus, breathing is help put us back in control of our life force, helping us sexy! Yes, that's no typo. PRACTICE YOGA.

Start practicing Yoga at least twelve weeks before your wedding or when you feel stress creeping in. Studies on university students, who place increased workload and impending requirements on themselves to perform on an exam (sound similar?) have shown that participating in yoga groups on the lead up to exams have lower stress and anxiety. In addition, physiological and biochemical markers of stress were nowhere to be seen. The same stressed students will usually also have a weakening of their immune system as a result of stress. No bride wants to be feeling ill or fighting back the sniffles (not the emotional kind) on her big day, so get onto practicing yoga asap. Plus, you never know when your new flexibility skills from yoga might come in handy...maybe maneuvering into that uber tight wedding dress!

MEDITATION.

Did you know that meditation can change your genes? For real! Meditative practice gives rise to gene expression changes which cause improvements in your body's ability to respond to environmental stress as well, as the survival of immune cells and improved antioxidant status. In other words, your body will not age as quickly, your immune system will be stronger and your body will be better adapted to cope with all sorts of environmental stress.

Make it your mission to get outside at least twice a week, and if you can - try to make it every day. Enjoy the fresh air and nature. Take your beau with you and go for a trail walk, take a bike ride, go fishing, walk on the beach, swim in the ocean, swing on a swing or even just play with your dogs. If you don’t have much time, even five minutes of outdoor exercise each day makes a difference. Wake up early and walk around your garden and water the plants, or meditate for five minutes in the backyard soaking up the morning sun and fresh air. As little as five minutes outside will benefit your mental health.

Don't you wish you could bottle up the moment your fiancé popped the question? If you've already kicked your wedding plans into gear, you may have found that moment has been quickly overshadowed by a mountain of planning, expectations on yourself or from those around you, and for some of you the fear of being centre stage for an entire day. If you're naturally shy or an introverted person, the stress of being in front of a large group of well intentioned family and friends can still weigh heavily on your shoulders in the lead up to your day. And it's completely ok, and normal, that you may feel this way. Not only this, but modern life is already hectic - add a wedding into the picture and we can end up in go-go-go mode all the time. High intensity exercise, work, planning, rushing

and running is all sympathetic activity. Keeping up the go-go mode non-stop without a rest is a receipe to hit a wall and burn out, fast; putting a burden on your body as it can become acidic, toxic and unable to cope with the crazy demands you've placed on it. Now, I'm definately not saying that planning a wedding is a yucky process - it's the most exciting and special day you'll ever have the joys of planning. That's why I've written my top five tips, to help you be best version of yourself to enjoy the planning before your day, feel amazing at your wedding and guide you towards greater long-term physical and mental health well after you're day is over. Take note; they will require some preparation! But you are well worth the investment.

INFRARED HEAT.

Find a beauty salon with a detox box, or yoga studio that uses infrared heat. Infrared heat helps your body move into a parasympathetic state known as the 'rest response', this is the state you are in when you are calm, relaxed, resting or sleeping. Detoxification, repair of cells, and digestion only occur properly when your body is resting. Infrared heat is calming and helps you to sweat out seven times more toxins from you skin. •

SMALL THINGS YOU LOVE H E S A I D / Hopefully it doesn't embarrass her too THE PROPOSAL H E S A I D / Kehl's was definitely expecting it on our

planned holiday in Europe, but I didn't want to take the ring over there and cart it around everywhere we went. So, I proposed to her before we left on Australia Day. It all worked out pretty well, as we had all of our friends over later that day which made a great day even better. It really was the best proposal ever! We were planning a trip to Europe earlier this year, and I had an inkling that he would do it on our holiday, which annoyed Callum because I knew he wanted our proposal to come with an element of surprise. Little did I know he had other ideas. On Australia Day (which would have to be one of our favourite days of the year) we woke up early, hungover and tired; but we had to mow the lawn because we had all of our friends coming over to celebrate at 10am that morning. I felt annoyed he hadn’t done it earlier, plus wasn't too happy that he was making me help so early on such an awesome day. So, I left to make him a sandwhich. Here I am, upstairs, tired, hungover, cranky and cursing him in my head when he walks up behind me and says "Hey, before everyone gets here, I have something for you." I turned around and just burst into tears. There he was, standing there with his big, gorgeous smile and a ring. I cried for hours, called my family and then spent the rest of the day celebrating with all of our closest friends. It was truly the greatest. SHE SAID /

smile eyes. He has such an amazing smile, but when he is truly happy his whole face lights up. That makes me the happiest. I also love how passionate he is about everything and anything he puts his mind to. He works so hard for everything he has. He loves his family and his friends so, so much, and he is such a loyal person. I love that attribute about him. THE WEDDING H E S A I D / Kehl's is the most organised person I've

ever met, which works out great for me as she'll have the entire event run sheet finished six months in advance. We just didn't want your standard 'big conference room' style wedding, so we're doing a half indoor / outdoor ceremony and outdoor reception. I'm really looking forward to the wedding and honeymoon. And, I'm pretty excited for Kehl's to become a McMahon. S H E S A I D / I have had this day planned from the day

I was born! I think our wedding won’t be what people expect from us. It’s going to be gorgeous, very soft, bright and white. We aren’t the typical couple, and that will show; but we definitely won’t be draping the place in black and grey. I can’t wait to be Mrs McMahon. I get butterflies thinking about it. •

STORY KATHERINE POWELL

The idea for Fox and Fallow came to Mt Isa born Janet Pogorelc and her husband Darrell Kwong when they saw a wedding fair advertised in their current hometown of Brisbane.

While Janet is the creative genius behind the brand, with her love for hand lettering, typography and calligraphy, she says Darrell is the brawn and logic, crafting their hand made signs and chalkboards.

The couple then incorporated that theme into their wedding but Janet says she does look back and wish she could do it all over again. “After doing so many weddings you realise how much cooler you could have made it.”

“I’d fallen in love with designing things for weddings after doing our own,” she says. “We thought the fair might be a fun thing to do. We applied and built a business up over the weekend.”

“He’s pretty handy,” she says.“He’s very good at working with wood and making things. He kind of got into it by default. “It’s really nice for us to do it together,” Janet says.

While the wholesale part of their business is growing, the custom-made side is still booming. They’re now doing weddings for brides in America and even the UK. “We did one a few months back for a girl who was getting married in Ibiza so we hand painted everything in gold and hand painted all the place cards. It was pretty cool!”

Janet, a graphic designer, and Darrell, a lawyer by day, spent the weekend making stationery and timber signs for the show, setting up a website and creating the name Fox & Fallow. From there, the business was born.

Fox & Fallow’s style is unique, cute and quirky, much like the couple themselves, particularly the way they met. “We met at maths camp which is pretty cool and nerdy,” Janet says. “We got together in grade 11 and we’ve pretty much been together ever since.”

From humble beginnings Fox & Fallow has gone from strength to strength. Their hand crafted paper and timber products and blackboards, custom-made for weddings and events, gained popularity through word of mouth and promotion through style shoots, social media and blogs.

They moved to Brisbane together for university and were married a few years ago. Janet says even with her design background, their wedding was “all over the shop”.

Fast-forward two years and the couple now has a wholesale line for retailers, which they launched in New York earlier this year. Like the decision to launch their custom business, Janet and Darrell threw themselves into wholesaling in the same fashion – head first. They applied for the show, created a whole new line of products and headed to New York to try their luck.

“I think being a graphic designer can be a bit of a curse when you’re trying to plan your own thing because you know how many different directions you can go in,” she says. “I was all over the place and couldn’t decide on a style or a colour scheme. I think my florist hated me because I said can’t we just have all the colours?” she says laughing.

“We decided to do it backwards,” she says.“We thought if you’re going to launch anywhere then we may as well launch in New York!” Launch they did, with the exposure from the show allowing the couple to have Fox & Fallow products stocked in stores right across North America, Canada and even Japan.

In the future Janet says she would love to have their own Fox and Fallow shop front that doubles as a studio and workshop. “I think there is going to be a point where our house is too small,” she says. “We’re utilising every room at the moment so that’s definitely on the cards.”

"W E ma y as we ll LA UN CH

Not afraid to think outside the square, Janet says they ended up with a bit of a panda and bear theme after their quirky engagement shoot. “We wore a giant panda and bear head,” she says. “It was our photographer's idea but it was really fun.”

in Ne w yo rk !"

With a couple of quick and courageous decisions, Janet and Darrell have almost fallen into their success with Fox & Fallow. “It’s been equal parts terrifying and exciting,” she says. “But you really just have to push yourself to do it.” •

M A D E L E I N E / The proposal was amazing! Dave surprised me with a night at our favourite hotel in Melbourne so we could spend time together before I flew out to NYC for Christmas and New Years. As the sun was setting over The Yarra, he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.

THE DRESS M A D E L E I N E / Ahh my wedding dress – let’s just say I picked

“the one” as I was scrolling through Instagram before Dave had even proposed to me. I was totally in love. Unfortunately the designer had only made two of the dresses and by the time Dave proposed it was sold out. It was quite a simple dress so I decided to have it made. To cut a long story short, it was a complete disaster. It was two weeks out from my wedding and I had no dress. That’s when I ordered my new dress and it was perfect. I think everything happens for a reason and the dress I ended up wearing on the day was definitely the one for me.

LO C AT I O N A N D T H E M E M A D E L E I N E / We wanted our wedding to have a bit of a “resort” feel to it. We kept the colour theme to very clean and classic whites and greens. Both our ceremony and reception were held on a very good family friend’s property. We had spent time there together and with our family and thought it would be the perfect location not only because of the beautiful landscape but because it was private and meant something to us both. One thing we loved about our day was the set up, too. We had the ceremony right next to the reception marquee. That meant that once our ceremony was finished, our guests could move straight into the marquee for champagne and a huge antipasto station.

THE RECEPTION M A D E L E I N E / Our reception was amazing. We had a cocktail style reception which I just love. Dave was on crutches for our day, so we couldn’t really have a first dance. I walked down the aisle to the acoustic version of Sam Smith’s Latch - so when the club version came on Dave got up and danced with me and all of our guests on crutches and in a moon boot. It was so much fun for both of us. Our friends and family are such a fun bunch of people that by 7pm the dancefloor was already full.

DOMINIQUE & JUSTIN 2 3 M AY 2 0 1 5 / P A L U M A

D O M I N I Q U E / The story of how we met is the classic story of the girl next door. Justin was living with his mates when I moved in next door, when one day Justin’s house mate “accidently” kicked the footy into our yard, which of course meant they had to come knocking on our front door to retrieve it. Fast forward to our engagement in San Francisco; Justin insisted that we go for a walk up to the Golden Gate Bridge to watch the sun set. After a few hours of walking up and down the hills of San Fran, we finally arrived at the bridge. As I was taking in the views, Justin had taken out his phone and insisted that I watch a video he had made. Little did I know, it was a video of all the special moments we had shared throughout our relationship. After the video had ended, I looked up to see Justin was down on one knee, holding in his hands the most beautiful ring I had ever seen.

C R E AT E D TO G E T H E R D O M I N I Q U E / There wasn't a detail that Justin and I didn't work on together, and having our closest friends and family there to share this amazing moment in our lives was just so heart-warming. Â Every moment of the entire day was a reflection of our relationship and lives together, it can't get much better than that.

THE RECEPTION D O M I N I Q U E / We loved every single

thing about our day. Ultimately, it would have to be the location of the reception. Our reception was held in a little wooden cabin with fairy lights and fireplaces setting the scene at Hidden Valley. The styling was very warm and rustic. There was no phone signal, so it was much more intimate with no distractions. It was so special sitting down at our bridal table and just taking a moment to take it all in.

J A N E / Tom proposed on a lazy Friday night, five mintues after I walked in the door from work. I was definitely caught by surprise! His proposal was written on our kitchen's blackboard wall. He secretly caught the whole moment on video and it has been watched hundreds of times over - it still brings on huge smiles and tears! Our engagement was relatively quick - only ten months before our wedding. Rather then having an engagement party - we decided to just get married!

O N E B I G FA M I LY G AT H E R I N G J A N E / We ideally wanted our wedding

to feel like one big family gathering followed by a homestyle dinner. Choosing jewel tones, gold accents and modern calligraphy helped us avoid the 'country theme' that we wanted to avoid purely because we thought that's what guests would expect, given the location. It was so exciting seeing our wedding unfold exactly as we had imagined it.

THE BEST MOMENT J A N E / We both reminisce a lot on how fun

our dance floor was! Tom's groomsman built us an amazing big open-air pallet dancefloor, complete with festoon lighting. We were both on such a love-high already and then to be completed surrounded by so much fun and shameless dance moves made for one incredible wedding day memory. Don't forget - the bigger the dance floor, the better.

A R I A / We decided that we wanted to get married last year and although I didn’t know exactly when Matthew would propose, it wasn’t such a surprise when he popped the question. After more than 15 years (of ups and downs) and the birth of our daughter Meila in 2011, we knew it was time to make things official. Matthew proposed after a long day at work on a Saturday. Covered in dirt still in his work clothes, he got down on one knee and said “well this is how you’ll see me for most of the rest of our lives” and in unison he and Meila (our daughter) asked “mummy, will you marry daddy?” and that completely warmed my heart.

THE VIBE A R I A / Our ceremony was short and sweet, which is just

how we wanted it. Having our daughter included in our day and seeing her walk down the aisle with our niece, holding a sign saying “Daddy, Here Comes Mummy was very special for the both of us. Emotionally I felt an overwhelming sense of joy. We were both beaming. The whole ceremony felt very natural and very us.

A COUNTRY AFFAIR A R I A / We both loved the thought of a country

wedding, mostly rustic and natural. I also wanted to incorporate some small vintage touches. The reception area was a large open space surrounded by tall gum trees that we used to hang festoon lighting. We both have very relaxed and laid back personalities but also love a good party, so we wanted a wedding where our guests felt comfortable and could really enjoy themselves. When we started to plan our day, we decided that we would do most things ourselves to help with the money factor and because we both really wanted to be involved in every aspect of the day itself.
