Welcome to our last edition of 2015! This year has been filled with so many milestones - all of which being exciting, humbling and empowering. We kicked this year off with a bang with our first print edition hitting the shelves inside The Townsville Bulletin in March. They say "dream big and dream often", but to be able to share so much love (literally) with you all in the form of something real and tangible to hold was something else. To top the cake, I am thrilled to share that Ruffles & Cake has taken home the coveted award of 'Best Non Daily Publication' at this years Queensland Multi Media Awards! Each year, Queensland's finest creative folk gather in Cairns to celebrate and recognise the crème de la crème of media professionals across print, television, radio and multi media. To say we felt privileged to be in a room of such high calibre is quite an understatement. I truly feel like this is just the start for Ruffles & Cake, and to be recognised so early in our journey has left me feeling inspired for what lies ahead in 2016. Maybe it's just this time of the year that induces the unpreventable optimism in me? Of course a huge heartfelt thank you goes to you; our readers, and the team at The Townsville Bulletin for bringing Ruffles & Cake to life! If we haven't thrown enough milestones at you yet - there's one more to celebrate I can't leave without a mention. In our last edition, we teamed up The Pop Up Wedding Co. to give one lucky reader the chance to 'win a fancy elopement' (yes, a Pop Up Wedding!) in the pretty Port Douglas. A huge thank you to everyone who entered, you made our collective decision a tough one to say the very least! A huge congratulations to Nina, our lucky winner who will be tying the knot in July with Pop Up Wedding Co. and an amazing NQ team. Check out Nina's creative winning entry over at our Facebook or Insta page, and stay tuned to Ruffles to see their Pop Up wedding journey unfold! Lastly, with all that said and a state award under our belt, we're keen to tackle the year ahead but not before we celebrate the year that was. I wish you, our dear readers, a very Merry Christmas and an even happier New Year! Enjoy the most special time of the year with your nearest and dearest. Until next time! x

ASHLEIGH

DANE

23 / COURSE COORDINATOR,

25 / ELECTRICAL

TUTOR & ASSESSOR

HOW WE MET

He said: I spotted her on the bus on the way home from school. It just so happened that the bus stopped at my stop and we were the only ones to get off so I introduced myself straight away. She said: We met when we were both in High School. Dane went to school at Ignatius Park College and I went to school at Ryan Catholic College and we caught the same bus home and got off at the same stop. The first time we left the bus together Dane said “Hey, I’m Dane” and we just got chatting I thought he was so spunky; I remember feeling so nervous talking to him. Every day after that we sat next to each other on the bus and he would share his iPod with me.

SALESMAN

THE FIRST DATE

THE FIRST KISS

He said: The first date I took Ashleigh on was to The Strand and to the Queens Gardens, we then went to see a movie from there.

He said: Our first kiss was at my house and we were watching a movie.

She said: It was during the school holidays! Dane had organised for us to go to Queens Park. We had lots of fun, adventuring through the park and getting lost in the maze. We then went to see a movie, and that's when I realised how much Dane loves movie popcorn; I mean big time love. It was simple but a perfect first date. I can still remember how much we laughed and how I felt that day. I was so happy.

She said: I went over to Dane’s house and we had a movie day; we were watching Happy Feet. Funnily enough we are still huge fans of kid’s movies!

10 REAL COUPLE

THE BEST MOMENTS

He said: This is a hard one to answer because we've had so many best moments together. A few favourites would have to be our holidays together to Palm Cove, Port Douglas, as well as Melbourne, Gold Coast and our many trips to Magnetic Island. She said: It’s hard to narrow down almost 10 years of memories together to define the ‘best’ ones, but my favourite moments are the simplest. We love to pull out all of our pillows and throws and snuggle on the lounge and chat or watch movies or TV series with our Dog Bentley and Cat Lulu snuggled in. Add two bowls of butter chicken into the mix and that’s our idea of perfection.

al lover, im n a n a is e h s " I love that passion m co f o ll u f o s s ' e and how sh time we y r ve e ies cr e h s that " visit the R SP CA -DANE

THE FIRST I LOVE YOU

He said: It was actually Ash who said I love you first, but I was very happy to hear it and I replied with “I love you too”. She said: I said it first. I was at Dane’s house and we were goofing around and being silly when I said it, and he said it back. I loved and honestly still do love everything about Dane and I couldn’t resist not telling him that then or every day after.

FINDING THE ONE

He said: I can’t say that I know the exact moment but it would have been quite early in our relationship. We get along so well and have the same interests. I've always thought and still do think she is so beautiful and such a great person. She is my best mate. She said: There’s never been a time that I didn’t think Dane was the one. He is so attentive to me and loves me for exactly who I am. He has a fantastic sense of humour and I love how humble he is. We share the same goals in life and just work so well together. He still gives me butterflies and I still can’t believe how lucky I am to be able to share my life with someone as wonderful as him.

THE PROPOSAL

SMALL THINGS YOU LOVE

He said: I know Ash so well and knew she wouldn’t want anything too over the top, so I kept it simple in our home with candles lit, music playing and asked her if she would like a massage. I made sure she was nice and relaxed and I was massaging her left hand when I placed the ring on her finger and got down on one knee and asked her to share her life with me.

He said: I love Ash’s cheeky personality and her smile and laugh. I love that she is a massive movie and TV series lover like me and that we both want to visit the same places in the world. I love that she is an animal lover and that she's so full of compassion that she cries every time we visit the RSPCA (but I hate to see her actually crying). I also love how easy going she is.

She said: The proposal was just so perfect. We're a pretty low key couple and I had always envisioned Dane proposing in a way that was true to us. It was just after Christmas and we had been to my brother’s house for dinner. We came home around 11.00pm, and I took Bentley outside and did a few things around the house. When I walked into the bedroom there were candles everywhere and Dane had set the bed up for a massage. I was totally relaxed with Bentley snuggled into my head and Lulu snuggled at my feet when I felt him place the ring onto my finger whilst massaging my left hand. I turned my head to find him kneeling on one knee and he said the most beautiful words to me and I cried and said “yes!" It was perfect.

She said: Every day that I am not with Dane he rings me just to check in to see how my day is going. It makes me feel so loved and supported. It is so nice to think that even amongst his busy day he is still thinking of me and wondering how my day is going. When he rings me, he listens intently and always reassures me, offers kinds words and comfort and laughs with me. I also love when he gives me kisses on the forehead. THE WEDDING

He said: I can’t wait for the wedding! We are getting married in Fiji at the Outrigger Beach Resort. I can’t wait to have an overseas holiday with her and call her my wife at the same time. She said: We have always known that we wanted a destination wedding (we want to celebrate for as long as we can) and we have never been overseas together, so we have chosen to getting married in Fiji. There aren’t actually any words to describe how excited we are! We have the best family who has been so supportive who will all be joining us, which makes us feel so blessed. I cannot wait to marry Dane and start our lives together as husband and wife in beautiful Fiji surrounded by our family and closest friends. Bring it on! •

If you’ve happened to find yourself on the Internet recently, you’ve probably stumbled across an article or post about unplugged weddings. At that point, most good-hearted people would read the article and move along. If however, you read the comments (which is something I recommend never doing) you would find a myriad of opinions about the ravishing wedding trend of actually attending a wedding instead of photographing it. Today, I wish to present my case for my clients; the couple who have overcome much to search the planet for someone they didn’t hate, and have decided that out of all the decisions they could make, marriage was by far the best of these. In case you haven’t read the bio bit where Ruffles and Cake tells you who I am, I’m a marriage celebrant. I’m the guy that stands in between the couple tying the knot and I encourage them to french kiss in front of their grandma and sign legal documents with fancy pens. Every weekend I stand in that middle position of the wedding ceremony, with a birds eye view of all invited. From that position on high, I see mothers and fathers,

grandmas and grandpas, brothers and sisters, and that chick from school that the bride couldn’t figure out how to not invite. All of which trying their darndest to get that photo that’s going to get the most likes on Facebook or at bingo and they’re missing something spectacular. If everyone put their phones down for a second, and read their wedding invitation, they would be hard pressed to find “Along with attending our wedding, celebrating with us, and spending $200 on a present, could you also find the best Instagram filter to suit our theme and capture the entire wedding?”.

@JOSHUAWITHERS

life, the one that you’re so excited to see fall in love, the friend that you’ve never seen happier, has invited you to the wedding ceremony to clap, to cheer, and to laugh and to cry. They probably don’t care if you take a photo, but they’d be so sad if you were more interested in Snapchatting the ceremony instead of listening to it.

A wedding ceremony is a magical moment where two weirdos enter as loved up freaks, and leave as husband No offence intended and wife. Isn’t that just crazy? There is so but I’m almost certain much to be in awe of here. Besides the that the [wedding] fact that they found someone to love, photographer is way which is a miracle by any account, they better than you are. also decided that tackling life together with them is a really good idea. So much of a good idea that they should dress up pretty and hold a party. The reason couples aren’t inviting you to photograph the wedding is because they’ve paid this company Wouldn’t it be great if you saw it, heard it, enjoyed it, $4,000 to $10,000 to photograph it. No offence and encouraged it; instead of recording it? intended but I’m almost certain that the photographer is way better than you are too! Instead, they’d actually like you to be present in the ceremony. That person you’ve known your whole

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND STARTING FLOWERS BY FLOURISH?

WHAT IS IT THAT'S UNIQUE ABOUT TOWNSVILLE WEDDINGS IN PARTICUL AR?

I come from a fairly creative family, so the love and appreciation of art and beauty has always been there. I came to a time in my life when I realised working for money and not passion, wasn’t going to cut it – professionally and personally. Whilst looking at one of my grandmother’s oil paintings of cut flowers it hit me. That’s my dream – floristry or rather floral art. And I haven’t looked back – I absolutely love it!

We have the luxury of an Island, quirky and sophisticated venues and restaurants, Hinterlands, Tablelands, stunning public gardens and parks, and beautiful private acreage/residences – allowing for fantastically varied styles and themes.

H O W H A S Y O U R B U S I N E S S E V O LV E D F R O M THE BEGINNING UNTIL NOW?

Every event is distinctive due to the brief provided by my client. However if I am given free reign, I certainly do incorporate ‘appropriate’ flowers and foliage to compliment the venue/event. For example if the event is expecting interstate/international guests, I love to show case an array of tropical flowers and lush foliage. Conversely, if the venue and theme is more Australiana, then masses of Eucalyptus Gum, nuts, berries and native flowers are on the shopping list.

My business has evolved immensely from both my style and my business acumen. My approach to floristry is very organic. I try as much as possible to work with the shape and form of the flowers and foliage – rather than manipulating them. Obviously there’s still technique that needs to be considered, however I try as much as possible to let Mother Nature talk for herself and this keeps changing and evolving the more I understand each type of flower.

DO YOU TRY TO INCORPORATE THE NORTH QUEENSLAND FEEL WHERE YOU CAN WITH A NATIVE FLOWERS?

WHAT DO YOU FIND ARE THE MOST POPUL AR TRENDS, THEMES, COLOURS AND ST YLES AT THE MOMENT?

A. Bright and bold colours. B. Messy, messy, messy (it may look like it’s been whacked together – however there is method to the madness! C. Interesting (pretty or quirky) flowers or foliage. Not necessarily the whole arrangement, just a few stems. D. Yester-year is still very prevalent. Think Gatsby and Little House on the Prairie. In fact, I think it’s stepped up a notch. E. Unstructured teardrop shapes for the bride’s bouquet are on the rise. WHAT SHOULD BRIDES THINK ABOUT WHEN THEY'RE PICKING THEIR FLOWERS?

Think about your dress first as this will determine how flamboyant, sophisticated, earthy, contemporary or ethereal you will want to go. You don’t want the flowers to 'compete with' or 'wash out' your dress. Also think about the colour of your bridal party (if you’re having one) regarding the colour palette of your flowers. Again, this will influence the overall theme of your wedding for example whether you want to 'complement' and/or 'make a statement'.

There are so many different ways my clients have used flowers on their big day but my absolute favourite for this year was a floral ‘pooch collar’ for the bride and groom’s beloved Labrador. I’ve had an upper arm (really funky) corsage to hide a tattoo. I loved this as it worked beautifully with the head garland. I’ve also had super pretty floral clusters attached to stiletto shoes, oversized floral fascinators and headbands, and an oversized trailing wrist corsage instead of a bouquet. Some of the really unique ways I’ve seen flowers used include using the ‘something old’ theme and decorating personal items or memorabilia like bicycles, swings and a tree as well as items such as shoes, tiaras, purses and veils (yes!) with flowers.

YOUR DESIGNS ARE VERY UNIQUE, WHAT IS THE PROCESS A BRIDE WOULD GO THROUGH WITH YOU

WHAT DRIVES YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR PASSION?

W H AT I M PA C T W O U L D YO U L I K E TO H AV E O N T H E INDUSTRY?

FLOWERS!! Flowers always bring happiness, love and beauty. No matter what the occasion, flowers bring a smile. My drive and passion is to keep bringing flowers to the forefront of peoples lives. Imagine how terribly sad it would be to never receive or give flowers – to smell and enjoy the beauty of them?

I’m not sure if I want to have an ‘impact’ on the industry as such, but rather ‘impact’ on my clients and their guests / loved ones. I want everyone who is exposed to my brand to be reminded of how important nature’s beauty really is.

WHEN CHOOSING HER ARRANGEMENTS?

The majority of brides will come to me with a selection of images that they’ve fallen in love with. When we meet for our first consultation, I need to break down what’s doable and what’s not – based on availability and budget. I find most of my clients come to me as they are wanting my input and generally trust the end result without having to micro manage. Of course the bridal flowers are very important and this is an area most brides are fairly specific about, but when it comes to the reception and other requirements, a little more flexibility is usually entrusted. I do have the odd client who says ‘go for it’. This is always fantastic as it means they have no expectations and are (hopefully) super happy with the ‘surprise’. It also means I can put my creative hat on and really have some fun.

T E L L U S A B O U T T H E ‘AWAY F R O M W E D D I N G S ’ ANITRA. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A RARE WEEKEND OFF THAT HELPS YOU SWITCH O F F, R E C H A R G E A N D I N S P I R E Y O U T O B E CREATIVE?

How I recharge and regain inspiration when I’ve had a seriously busy few weeks is by simply jumping on the barge and spending two or three days on Magnetic Island with my beloved pooches. It’s here that I re-group and reflect on recent happenings and start putting together a creative plan for upcoming events. I also start putting together concepts and ideas for when I have a client that is at a loss or has handed the whole creative process over to me. I like to always have a new design up my sleeve at any given time. I also love looking through home and garden publications. An idea always comes to mind by just looking at different forms of design and creativity.

WHAT ARE YOUR PL ANS FOR THE BUSINESS G O I N G F O R WA R D - YO U H AV E A N E W LO G O HEADQUARTERS, WEBSITE. WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN THE NEXT YEAR?

Yes! I have a brilliant new logo that represents the business perfectly. My plans for next year and the following two are to introduce a greater selection of interesting and unique flowers and foliage to continue a point of difference between myself and other businesses. I work extremely hard to offer tailored design and concepts to both my corporate and private clientele. I also plan to offer my service to regions outside of Townsville, which I’m super excited about.

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE TIP FOR BRIDES ON T H E I R B I G D AY ?

A couple of key things to remember - your day will always be amazing! A. Don’t let minor details on the day get you down. I had a gorgeous couple share their day with Cyclone Ita – given 24hours notice – and their day was spectacular! B. Ask someone to put together an ‘emergency kit’ ie. Disprin, scissors, hand wipes, nappy wipes (for stains), and jelly beans (for nerves) etc. C. Remember to eat before your first champagne but don’t have ‘dripping’ food such as dips and pizza. D. Flower specific advice: place buttonholes, corsages and head garlands (anything out of water) in the fridge until they are ready to wear, and bouquets may be in a little bit of water so ensure there is a clean, dry cloth to blot the bottom of the stems before they are anywhere near the dresses.

QUICK READ / ANITRA'S SEVEN TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR BLOOMS RIGHT. S I M P L I C I T Y . Sometimes less is more. A single colour palette is always elegant and will never date. T H E G O W N . Don’t compete with the gown. An elaborate bodice would lend itself to a simple selection of flowers and foliage. Conversely, a clean lined gown can sometimes shout for a wild, statement bouquet. F L O W E R C R O W N S A N D A R B O U R S . Yes to both! Flower crowns are just too pretty. I can see the trend is shifting to a slightly different style of floral head wear soon – which I love. Arbours scream romance. I absolutely adore arbours adorned with flowers and foliage. It frames the moment and individualises the ceremony and couple. G E R B E R A S - H O T O R N O T ? Not. Apologies to all

the Gerbera lovers out there.

T R A D I T I O N A L O R O N T R E N D ? No right or wrong. Traditional is perfect for the sentimentalist. On Trend – a knock out for those who love to be in vogue. V A L E N T I N E S D A Y . Is all about love and appreciation. A single bloom will do it everytime. Don’t worry about the traditional red rose – why not an Orchid or Lily? Always beautiful and always appreciated. Start with a favourite colour, rather than the actual flower. 2 0 1 6 . Romance will never go out of style. Big, bold

and brassy is definitely a theme taking shape. If your style is more traditional, but you still want to be a touch on trend, putting a modern twist on yesteryear is all the vogue. I can’t wait! •

K AY L A & PA U L 5 SEPTEMBER 2015 / TOWNSVILLE

K AY L A / Paul proposed to me at home, after we had just been out for a romantic dinner. It had been a beautiful night, but I didn’t think anything of it until Paul got down on one knee with a ring box in the middle of our bedroom! It was completely out of the blue, or as much as it can be after being together for as long as we had been (about nine years) at the time!

THE DRESS K A Y L A / It all started to feel real when I put my dress

on. I cannot describe how amazing I felt in that dress. I knew that I wanted something relatively classic, but with a bit of a twist. I went and tried on a few dresses, but nothing really stood out, so I followed the advice of my maid of honour and had it custom made with Trish from Bellero Designs. The end product was beyond my greatest expectations. I thought that getting a dress custom made would be a hassle, but it was actually so much easier in the end!

SPECIAL TOUCHES K A Y L A / We made each other’s wedding band from start to finish with a local jeweller, which was a lot of fun. We each had them engraved with a surprise message too, so it was a bit special when we could read each other’s message later in the day.

025 ADVICE

t of the marriage "Do not lose sigh sake of the wedding" for the K A Y L A / If I could give any advice, it would be to hire people and vendors you can trust and leave them to do their creative thing! Our cake was a surprise design and the flowers were a surprise too! Don’t try to micromanage every small detail, if you’ve hired vendors you love they’ll do an amazing job regardless. Just go with the flow of the day. There will always be unexpected events! We had a groomsmen faint at the ceremony and a wedding crasher at the reception – among other things! Those unexpected events just make for good stories!

THE CEREMONY K A Y L A / The ceremony location was a no-brainer for us. We

really loved the lushness of the Rainforest Lawn and it has an intimate and private feel which we loved. On the day I felt really nervous when I was standing outside the garden with Dad. He looked like he was barely holding it together, so we probably just made each other worse! Once I could see Paul I felt at ease and it all became just about us two. The ceremony was the definite highlight, particularly our vows!

THE PERFECT COMBO K A Y L A / We had a fairly neutral colour palette with a bold splash of colour and metallic accents. We knew we wanted the reception to look and feel like a big dinner party, so this probably guided a lot of our decisions! It was important to us that we have amazing food, wine, and music – that’s all you need for a great party! Our reception at A Touch of Salt turned out to be exactly what we’d hoped for.

C A R LY & M I C K 6 JUNE 2015 / M AC K AY

C A R L Y / Mick spontaneously proposed to me during a day trip to Cape Gloucester. This was the first place we ever went on holidays together when we were both 19 years old. We were floating around in the crystal clear beautiful water and Mick said it just felt like the perfect time to ask. Because it was a spontaneous proposal, Mick didn’t have a ring and he also really wanted to ask my dad first for permission, so we waited for a couple of weeks to tell our friends and family. Cape Gloucester is absolutely beautiful – we went back there for a few days after our wedding for a mini honeymoon!

THE PERFECT TEAM C A R L Y / With a creative background, I decided

to take on the mammoth job of designing the creative and aesthetic elements of the wedding myself. My mum and I have a very similar style so she was a big part of this process. Mick complimented my concepts perfectly by making it all possible. I’m the ideas man and he makes it all happen! Wedding planning match made in heaven!

THE DRESS C A R L Y / The dress was the first big thing I tackled.

I wanted something simple, understated and elegant. Finding something that ticked all those boxes was more difficult than I anticipated! In the end I found the beautiful Bella dress from Rue de Seine. It was perfect!

025 ADVICE

THE FIRST DANCE C A R L Y / A huge highlight for all of our guests was when

Mick ‘disappeared’ right when we were supposed to be starting our first dance leaving me stranded on the dance floor. The crowd began chanting Mick’s name and before long he emerged donning a kilt and full Scottish attire! We then performed our very well practised traditional Scottish dance to ‘Marie’s Wedding’. The dance finished up with Mick doing the Highland Fling which had the crowd roaring with laughter. Rumours have it that my dad who is very proud of his Scottish ancestry even shed a tear!

THE VIBE C A R L Y / I grew up in an old Queenslander surrounded by all things vintage which hugely influenced the theme of our wedding. From the beginning we wanted an industrial and eclectic feel complimented by lots of greenery, botanical elements and unique vintage pieces. We had plenty of hanging plants, leafy trees and created a botanical bar complete with sparkling fairy lights. The industrial metal chairs added that pop of colour and a really funky feel. We actually became absolutely obsessed with finding chairs ourselves! All this on the backdrop of Paxton’s Warehouse was, in a word - beautiful!

D E S S E R T H E AV E N C A R L Y / Family was such a big part of making our day special, so I’d have to say that the dessert table was one of my favourite details. Each of my aunties made a dessert or two and my Aunty Glenys also made our amazing wedding cake. Our guests raved about how delicious these were and they looked absolutely stunning. One of my aunties made my Na’s chocolate cake. This was a really sentimental touch and it was really nice to have a little piece of her there on the day.

ANNIKA & JUSTIN 2 3 J U LY 2 0 1 5 / B E L L S R A P I D S , W A

While Justin was in Perth, Annika, in Wales (UK) had made plans to climb the highest peak in her county with her friend Rachel. Even though it was raining they followed the path, and some curiously placed roses to the top. Once she made it, Annika hesitated to climb the stairs covered in rose petals for fear of interrupting somebody else's special moment, but curiosity got the better of her... she ascended the lookout to find that Justin was not in Perth at work but in front of her holding a single rose and wearing a ridiculous grin. After the hands to face shock and a very long hug he got on a knee... and she said yes!

THE BEST MOMENT A N N I K A / I loved meeting Justin for our 'reveal'. I walked solo along a bridge over the river rapids and took everything in. I had to climb over the rocks to meet Justin before tapping him on the shoulder for him to turn around. It was such an incredible moment for us both! Justin's favourite moments were being able to read his self written vows in front of loved ones and spontaneously carrying me over his shoulder across the rocks after having photos taken in the middle of the river rapids - that was pretty fun!

THE BEST SURPRISE A N N I K A / We didn't know where we were getting

married, we asked The Pop Up Wedding Co. to keep it a surprise. The decisions were taken out of our hands and they gave us the most amazing gift a couple could ever receive. We had an intimate elopement with a small handful of local and international guests and everyone was so excited to be on a mystery tour on our special day. It was so fun to be on a bus; excitement building, wondering where and when our venue would pop up and we would be tying the knot! Nobody knew!

JUST GO WITH IT A N N I K A / We loved the idea of tying the knot but had spent around 8 months trying to figure out a way to involve everybody we love from the UK and Australia in our nuptuals - and still keep it relevant to who we are. A destination wedding seemed the most practical option but our hearts weren't in it. After a particularly frustrating weekend of brainstorming we found The Pop Up Wedding Co. We knew it meant we could have as little as twelve weeks to prepare our day but the impulse felt right. We sent them our love story and they became our saviours.

THE VIBE A N N I K A / The vibe of the day was all about dedicating

time to experiencing the love we share with each other and our nearest and dearest. The focus was not on matching decor or maintaining traditions or being stupidly lavish. It was simply a stunning romantic runaway filled with our favourite people and our favourite things! Our family and friends were behind us all the way and everybody got right into the surprise of it all.
