Colonial Architecture Museum Design (Major Design Problem)

DESIGN BRIEF Colonial architecture in India is proof of a time gone by, presenting a slice of British India in current times. Some of these buildings today are used as important government offices, while others are unfortunately perishing with time.

Cities such as Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai have fair share of British colonial architecture still present, like in Pune. The cantonment which was built during the time of the British, represents colonial architecture. These structures seem to be perfect for ‘climate control’. Most of these buildings were built for official use like the present General Post Office, the Council Hall, Controller of Defense Accounts Office and Pune Archives, a number of churches and a synagogue, etc.

The influence of the colonial style of architecture was such that the residents and government in this area adopted the colonial style of architecture. In order to create an awareness among the general public about the value of these heritage structures, efforts should be made to promote the idea that ‘the past reflects our present’.

Having a museum showcasing the architectural styles, their evolution, adaption, functions through models and their possible revival may help. As a visitor to such museums, one can participate in better understanding of the history of Pune Cantonment.
