CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION Goal #6 aims to ensure access to safe water sources and sanitation for all. It is projected that more than 40% of people are going to be affected by water scarcity as a result of the advancing climate change14. In 2017, 3 billion people were not able to safely wash their hands at home15. At the same time, ensuring universal access to sanitation and safe and affordable drinking water, sanitation and facilities requires the construction and maintenance of adequate infrastructure, which continues to pose a challenge in many countries. The RTRS Standard supports SDG #6 as it features a number of indicators which ensure that workers on RTRS certified farms have access to sanitation and to drinking and potable water, as well as indicators addressing efficient water use and protection of water-related ecosystems, both of which remain under-addressed in agriculture, in spite of the high potential of negative impacts from food production.
