PROPOSAL & OBJECTIVE

The 6 th Rangsit University International Design Symposium

According to the principle of design thinking, valuable design requires a balance of significant facets including human values, technology and business. While technology makes creations feasible and business viability makes them profitable, design ideas are usually triggered by human needs and desire, as it is human nature to want things. Human life is surrounded by objects, artifacts, products and services designed for human needs and desire at all levels. Physiological needs, psychological or emotional pleasure, and ultimate self-actualization are solved and responded by necessary commodities, electronic devices, design products and creative activities, respectively. Nevertheless, among varied design products and services in the market, one of the most relevant factors that makes some designs more successful than others is an understanding of people’s needs and desire, or “Empathy”. Empathy in design thinking involves an understanding of people, consumers and users, in terms of problems they encounter, physical needs and emotional desire. Unlike intuitive design approach widely employed by many designers, whose creations aim to express personal vision, narrate story or visualize imagination, designing with empathy focuses on human-centered design process, responding to human needs and desire. In order to gain insight into consumers, a deep research on several aspects of consumers, ranging from statistic facts, behavior, motivation, preference, lifestyle, experience to their environment, is required and studied through observing, engaging and empathizing with the target consumers. Such empathy is essential for designers and artists to create better designs and services. Based on an empathic understanding of consumer’s needs and desire, designers and artists employ their innate skills and creativity to create innovative design as a means to deliver best solutions for consumers. Considering the importance of empathy in design thinking, the symposium aims to highlight a dialogue between an empathic understanding of consumer and designer’s endless creativity, both of which are the key to driving creative industries forward and ultimately creating a better future. Welcoming Speech : Assoc.Prof. Pisprapai Sarasalin, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Design Vice President for International Affairs of Rangsit University, Dr. Chitriya Pinthong, Vice Presidents, Deans, distinguished keynote speaker, Mr. Hiroaki Kanai, distinguished participants, faculty members and students. Valuable design requires a balance of significant facets including human values, technology and business. While technology makes creations feasible and business viability makes them profitable, design ideas are rooted in responding to human needs and desires. The ability to deeply understand people’s needs and desires, or “Empathy”, resulting in meaningful and successful work pieces in both Art and Design realms. Unlike intuitive design approach, widely employed by many artists and designers, where personal vision expressed, story narrated and imagination visualized, designing with empathy focuses on human-centered design process. The process that requires “deep understanding” of the problems and realities of the people, surrounding environment and the interactions taking place. Deep research, on several aspects to gain insight about human being needs, behavior, motivations, preferences, lifestyles, experiences, environment, are done through observing, engaging and empathizing with the targeted end users and

recipients. Empathy is essential for designers and artists in order to create artworks, designs and services by employing their innate skills and creativity to innovate design as the means to deliver best solutions for human being and the society. Considering the importance of empathy in design thinking, the symposium aims to highlight a dialogue between an empathic understanding of consumers and designer’s endless creativity, both of which are the key to driving creative communities and industries forward and ultimately creating a better future for human flourishing. The sixth Rangsit University International Design Symposium entitled “Empathy” is held under the collaboration of Rangsit University National and International Research Conference, the Faculty of Art and Design, the Faculty of Digital Art and the Council of Fine and Applied Arts Deans of Thailand. Our committee and participants are composed of professionals and academics from 13 countries - Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, India, China, Hong Kong, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, United Kingdom and the United States of America. Our annual event aims to not only foster an academic collaboration among international institutions, but also serve as a platform for researchers, designers, artists, thinkers, inventors, and makers from all disciplines to share their ongoing work. And today, we are here to celebrate the work of Mr. Hiroaki Kanai, senior designer of ZARA MAN classic department, A Coruna, Spain Direction and design of ZARA MAN STUDIO Collection. In charge of outerwear developments. Mr. Kanai is a graduate from Arnhem Academy of Art and Design, Arnhem, the Netherlands and the Master of Arts graduate from the Royal College of Art, London United Kingdom in Fashion Menswear, programme. His graduate collection received widespread coverage in the fashion press where he was selected for the first ever catwalk show at the Whitechapel Gallery shoulder with Craig Green, Trine Hav Christensen and Sabina Brytesson. He was also featured at The Bright Young Things 2013, Selfridges, London/UK. The Bright Young Things is an annual initiative from Selfridges, choosing some of the UK’s most exciting rising stars from the worlds of fashion, art, design and give them a platform in the concept store, windows and online shop to get their talent exposed. I do believe that his sharing will be an inspiration to all of us to continue our work in progress. Lastly, on behalf of the Faculty of Art and Design, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to Dr. Chitriya Pinthong, Vice President for International Affairs for presiding over this Symposium. I’d like to extend a special thank to our executive committees for judging exhibition’s works, our keynote speaker, and all of our friends from around the world who have made the effort to come to Thailand and to share their works in this conference. Thank you to all who shared their times and energy to make the conference possible. May I now request the honor of Dr. Chitriya pinthong to deliver the opening remarks. Welcome all and Thank you very much. Associate Professor Pisprapai Sarasalin Dean of College of Design, Rangsit University, Thailand

OPENING SPEECH FOR DEAN 2018

The 6 th Rangsit University International Design Symposium

Opening Address by Dr. Chitriya Pinthong, Vice President for International Affairs, Rangsit University Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design, Assoc. Prof. Pisprapai Sarasalin, Distinguished Keynote Speakers and Panel Members, Distinguished Participants, Ladies and gentlemen, It is my great pleasure and honour to address the Sixth International Design Symposium organized by Faculty of Art and Design today. Rangsit university community and The Art and Design community in Thailand witnessed accomplishment of RSU International Design Symposium conducted in the past five years. The symposium reassures us the faculty’s strength and determination to arrange an annually open forum for artists and designers from all disciplines to share their views on the current issue of interest which essentially bears effects upon contemporary art and design, with this year focal point on “Empathy”. As the higher education institution, we are proud of the symposium floor that span to serve the artists and designers in sharing their work in progress, as much as learning, exchanging, and gaining new insights from renowned resource persons both locally and at the international levels. In this 4.0 era where the knowledge has crossed the boundaries and become deeply intertwined and integrated, the platforms and methodologies are blended, design thinking with Empathy has extended its capacity to work with various disciplines and in all dimensions. Here at Rangsit University, we have witnessed Art and Design already contributed alongside engineering and biomedical technology team to craft new products and services in response to the needs and desires of the elders on the basis of Empathy. At a further glance, we have acknowledged the development of Adaptive clothing in the field of Fashion design that has grown in the recent years, allowing autism, impaired ability persons, patients and elders to be more independence while quietly but powerfully contributing to the elevation of the aforementioned users’ self esteem and confidence.

The Age of Empathy : Work In Progress 6

Beyond Thailand’s territory, The Design Lab at Stanford birthed “designing for social system at the crossroad of social science and design, responding to the complex world of rapid social changes. Deep understanding of people or Empathy is at the core of the program. Being able to discover and choose interventions that have impact, in the multitude of possibilities requires Empathy to guide the decisions. Today in the exponential disrupting world, we all know that artificial intelligence is around the corner and Singularity is not something far beyond imagination. Empathy is absolutely vital. It functions in an even more important role than responding to the needs and desires of the human being but it is the Compass that will lead us to the right direction where Art and Design will significantly and definitely involve, include and interact. Appreciating the significance of Art and Design and Empathy that will vastly touch and better our lives, I would like to take this opportunity to express my admiration and thankfulness to the keynote speaker and panel members for enthusiastic participation and contribution from the very beginning. I truly believe that your invaluable knowledge and expertise to be contributed today will be a great inspiration for all of us. Thank to the dean of the Faculty of Art and Design and the faculty members whose vision would lead to foster academic collaboration among concerned international institutions while setting a platform for researchers, designers, artists, thinkers and inventors from relevant disciplines to share their work in progress. To allow ample time for this important and meaningful event, I have the pleasure to declare open the Sixth Rangsit University International Design Symposium and wish you all a pleasant and fruitful time at Rangsit University. Thank you

Techniques & Materials A medium-end, high definition video camera with a manual zoom lens was used. The editing process was completed with Adobe CS6 Premiere Pro software, with hardcoded subtitles made in Adobe InDesign. Extensive color timing and matte-work was done both in Premiere and SpeedGrade. For the sound, Audacity sound editing software was used to create musical loops, doctor bad recorded sound, and create transitions between speakers or for different clips of the same speaker. Line, Color & the Whole Stor the creation of the mural painting at Wat Phlapphla Chai The interior walls of the ubosot at Wat Phlapphla Chai have been recently painted with new murals. The artists used modern industrial pigments and color theory from the abstract expressionist painters, among many other interesting techniques, to complete their traditional work. Wat Phlapphla Chai is a hard to find Buddhist temple in Bangkok. It is located near Maitri Chit road in the Pom Prap district. This documents the approach by the group of artists during their working process at the temple in old Bangkok from 2012 to 2018. Here, the artists discuss the restrictions on their work and their methodology. The documentary itself strives to be a stylistic work. Paradoxically, both a formal and casual approach are used. And it uses sound in a unique post-modern way. The film is colorful and contains a lot of great Thai art.

Title : “ The River of no return Dimension : 430 x 300 cm. Techniques & Materials -Mixed media

The River of no return The flow of change can be observed or realized from the present state. The change leads to a historical story centered on human and society. As the saying goes, The River never flows back. The current image of the stream is the sum of the elements that are connected in a continuum. At present, the city is seen as Urban characterized with high rise buildings, houses, densely populated embracing the diverse society and culture. The growing modern city that we see is not the whole thing but merely the surface that coats the hidden layer of another subtle picture - the canal community and ways of lives. The canal community and ways of lives along Khlong Rangsit or Rangsit canal, the totally different scene from the skyscrapers and modern city however definitely linked closely to the coated scene of the ever expanding urban, is located in Pathumthani Province. The canal was excavated during the reign of King Rama V. to be used as a transporting route and irrigation system for farming. The canal Lifestyle has been continuously changing because of the modernization and the development. The river of life has been transformed into a canal road - along the canal. The beauty of life along the canal is vividly changing. The canal houses are being demolished to be replaced by the new road constructed, accommodating the needs of the larger city.

Art Installation// Nipon Smanmit (THAILAND) Title : The Unhewn Forms Techniques & Materials -Painted timbers are hanged and decorate with Light of Round Lamps

The Unhewn Forms The imagination of children is interesting. I’m reminded of a game I played with my friends when was a young boy. When we saw clouds we would turn their shapes into things with our imagination. The first of us to state what it was would be the winner. Really clouds are formless and there are no details which define them, but kids can use their imagination continuously. One important point which interests me is how the unhewn form can influence the imagination of the viewer. The process of human

perception cause the viewer to recallimages in his memory when confronted with an unknown form. A finished image will be the result. I create a variety of unhewn forms for the viewer to contemplate. Some pieces may be easier to imagine as a thing. It is interactive, simply. Some pieces may be harder to imagination because their form is not clear. The viewer has to spend more time to make a decision. My aim is to enhance the effect of interaction.

Sculpture// Achara Narklada (THAILAND) Title : Atta Upajara Samadhi Techniques & Materials - Sculpture

Atta Upajara Samadhi An art, we can tell that it reflect the subconscious come from the accumulations of aesthetic and art ability. It is individual and has different idea. Every time a small piece of wood are compound, the eyes stare and the mind concentrates on the work forward. All of these make “Atta Upajara Samadhi happened in the mind. What happened means concentrating to the work creator is doing, invent the work from inside the mind at that time. But whenever it compound a new one, the outcome will always be different like the mind that always changes through the time. Consider carefully, the small wooden pieces was compounded to be a big piece. This is not different from the idea that big organization comes from many small units. If every pieces chosen are fit to the others, it would be a fine and strong organization. But if not, it means the collapse.

“The Little Prince” “The Little Prince” or “Le Petit Prince” is the most famous novel of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It was first published in 1943 and has been translated into 300 languages. I believe that almost all readers are impressed by it, just like I am. “The Little prince” is one of my favorite books. I found it difficult to understand when I first read it. It’s not a typical children book which is full of imagination, interesting illustration and creative content, but it also gives the adult readers the very interesting point of view through the little prince’s curiosity and the conflict between him and other characters he met in his journey. The Little prince is a symbol of everyone’s youth. We have started our own journey since we were born. Each of us stopped by different planets and explore the universe in own way. All experience we have had creates the unique opinion, thoughts and personalities. We can’t deny hat the uniqueness can sometimes cause the conflicts and problems. One of the simple ways to ease the tension between those problems is to have the “Empathy”, and to understand that each person has his or her own “The Little Prince”.

“Kanom-Thong-Moun of King Suriya Chaiworaman 9” This feminist approaching idea started from my first visit to Angkor Wat in 2013.There are more than a thousand apsara. All of them are half naked. I felt immediately at that time that King Suriya Chaiworaman had as many girls as these statues, serving his sexual pleasure, and he had a very big harem. Not only in ancient times but also nowadays, we can see the evidence where millions of tourists are passionately touching the apsara statues on the breasts. Tourists do this with the attitude that women are the object of sexual pleasure. This experience inspired me to create the art piece, “Kanom Thong Moun of King Suriya Chaiworaman 9”. The idea of this art piece is to provoke the viewers to be aware of the idea, “men dominate-women”, which should be changed. Using the number 9 implies that it has never gone to zero. After bottle number nine there is nothing. This message should provoke the viewer to push ZERO to go away, and have something visible, so that the un-dominated society can exist.

We use our hearth to feel other people feeling, and we use our brain to think about other people feeling. In this work, I emphasize the process of Empathy through symbolic of hearth, brain, light bulb. The meaning of “Hearth” is to illustrate the feeling. And I use “Brain” as a symbol of logical. After we feel each other we need to think of how it should be, or how we should act. After that, I use “light bulb” to illustrate the state that people complete their understanding each other. The process will continually go on infinite because we need to adapt our feeling and logical all the time.

The existing warehouse, once an automobile f acility, located in the heart of Bangkok in S ukhumvit 26, is now injected with new programs: a canteen, a bar, a fabrication lab, an art studio, and design offices. The renovation prim arily uses simple steel structures with glass panels to create programmatic spaces that sit along the periphery of the warehouse and face an open court in the middle. The interior court can serve a range of temporal programs - dining, working, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, even weddings and fashion shows. It is populated with movable metal racks and loose furnit ure which can be reconfigured into different layouts based on different activities.
