Hello and welcome to the Spring edition of our newsletter. I hope this finds you in good health along with all of your animal pals.

Now that it seems that Covid is on the back burner we can all hopefully get life back to some sort of normality, With that said we have a full newsletter for you this time with the return of all your favourite features as well as the usual pages from all of our members and volunteers. So we have the return of Ask Amber, Tails from the Woods and our Meet Us 8- Greet Us page where Rachel has kindly written a page on her role within the branch.

On a very happy personal note we are now proud dog owners again as we have got another Welsh Pembroke Corgi puppy. We did everything we could to give a rescue dog a good home but after over two years of trying it was obviously not meant to be, so we had to get ourselves a puppy. If a puppy was the only way to get a dog then there was only one dog that we wanted as we have always had Corgi’s. So we now have Griff who was 8 weeks old when we got him on the 24th February and as you can see from his photo’s below he is a little cracker.

So I hope that you enjoy the newsletter and as I say in every edition I hope that it promotes awareness to the needs of all our animal friends and that we can rehome as many animals as possible.

Brenda has supplied the articles below which show what the branch has been doing in the past few month along with what is going to be done in 2022 Looking with optimism to reinstating our Branch fundraising activities we hope to hold at least two outdoor Dog Shows and will be advertising them in the next couple of months with dates and venues.

-- Last year - despite Covid challenges - we Jr >; managed to stage one Show - the Annual Chelmorton Dog Show on August Bank Holiday Monday run by Gill Walsh, and a virtual Pet Show in the spring which gave r_-‘ owners an opportunity to showcase their ’“‘ »-1-Yr" pets in a safe environment.

This year we are hoping to hold at least a couple of Shows in June and July. The 18th June is the RSPCA National One Fun Day and we are planning to hold a Show to coincide with this date. We are looking at venues in Congleton and Buxton areas but we will let you know in plenty of time.

Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill has passed its final stage through the Houses of Parliament and will become law This new law means it will be legally recognised that animals as sentient beings experience feelings and emotions, which is vital in order to give them the respect and protection they deserve and is something that was lost when Britain left the European Union An Animal Sentience Committee will be formed later in the year to protect animal welfare The committee will be able to influence public policy to improve the lives of animals and in turn create a kinder and more compassionate society The National Society has been at the forefront of the campaign to ensure that animal sentience is recognised in law, and they want to thank all the people who helped make this happen. Hello all animal lovers and welcome to our page where we Meet & Greet a member of our team who introduce themselves to us all and introduce their own pets

In this edition we meet Rachel White who joined the branch in 2013 as a Communications Co-ordinator, Fosterer, TrusteeICommittee member I initially started volunteering with the branch as a fosterer, which lead to me wanting to be more involved with how our branch runs - and became a trustee, joining the committee. I have taken on the role of Communications Co-ordinator, where I manage all the social media and PR channels...all voluntarily along with our fantastic branch volunteers. I am incredibly honoured to be so heavily involved with such like-minded volunteers striving to be a voice for the voiceless and putting action into saving lives Q) I have met lots of lovely new friends, there have been many tears, heartache, smiles and happy moments along the way - its been worth every second. Here are some words on my fostering experiences......

How did I get into fostering?

After losing my dog of 11 years, I wasn’t quite ready for the emotional attachment or commitment to get another one. After seeing a lot of stories on social media of people who save dogs from death-row by fostering and rehabilitating them, and being so inspired by their transformations, I decided that fostering was the way forward. So, l got in touch with my local RSPCA branch and signed up (RSPCA Iillacclesfield, SE Cheshire & Buxton).

Why fosterlrescue?

All rescues are different, but for the RSPCA - the majority of animals they take in are from cruelty cases and the animals have sadly suffered abuse or neglect. For these animals, a foster allows them to have a smoother course of rehabilitation and be assessed to decide what kind of home would suit them when being adopted. It helps provide a better picture or their character and saves the charity a lot of money on boarding costs. Not all rescued animals are from abusive backgrounds though, all animals are different the only thing you really need when looking to open your heart to adopt or foster a rescue is to be kind, patient and open minded.

But how do you let them go?

My first foster dot? was a 10 year old black Staffordshire bull terrier, who was with me for 6 months before being adopte . I was able to showcase his qualities with regular social media updates and photos.

People are able to relate more to seeing animals already in a home environment. Knowing that I was the stepping stone to finding him his forever home was the most rewarding thing I have ever done. Over the last B years, I have fostered 8 dogs, 5 hamsters, 2 budgies, 2 degu’s, 1 chinchilla, 25 domestic rats!

End of life care

My last 2 foster dogs have been for end of life care. Stella (Boxer) came to me with terminal cancer, and lived out her last 6 months with me being spoilt and well loved. My second EOL was Peggy-Sue, who was possibly one of the worst cases of neglect I have ever seen. She literally came to our branch on deaths door, aged 15 and extremely neglected. Thankfully — she knew she had been saved, and her fight to live the life she had always deserved gave her an amazing 11 months with me in permanent foster care. Both Stella and Peggy-Sue were my biggest emotional chaIIenges....but I would rather take on that heavy heart so that they did not die alone, frightened and sad in the shelter, and went on to the rainbow bridge with full, happy hearts.

Rescue is my favourite breed

Not only do you provide a warm bed, love, care and safety to an animal in need....you also benefit from the eventual trust and love in return from them which is tenfold. Some have been easy, some have been very challenging — but all have been worth it and are special in their own ways. I can’t say I do this on my own, the support from friends, family and followers has been incredible and every social media share, like, comment makes a huge difference to raising awareness, every donation (approx. £3,500 raised by fundraising pages set up for some of my fosters) so if you aren’t in a position to rescue, supporting i— I those who can also in saving lives!

SHAY Our special appeal for today is for a special kind of fellow, Shay is a little old Staffy — the best kind — but who has found the nature of a rescue centre rather difficult to come to terms with. He's of a nervous disposition you see, and can take time to grow accustomed to new things — people, places, and so forth — which we believe is a result of his rather sheltered life up to this point.

Prior to entry, his whole world may have comprised just one person and a room or two, maybe a squat living room with a small window facing out onto the street, poorly lit, the smell of old tobacco and strong coffee swirling about it, and perhaps a strip of garden where his businesses could be perfomied, not much more than a patch of yellow-brown grass pushed through with lambs quarters and nettles. Not much, hut enough. This was all he knew — and all he ever wished to know.

It was then that the Fates decided to turn his world upside down, the person on whom he’d always relied was no longer there — four legs are no help at all when the ground beneath you is pulled away. Here we are.

His shyness is useful insofar as it keeps away the novel, the unfamiliar, but you don't need to look very hard to see his inherent sweetness shining away under the surface. It starts with a curious sniff or two when you're not looking, say when you're sat in with him with your back tumed, maybe he'll nuzzle your hand after a while, or walk past in a manner that seems to encourage contact. Move too quickly and he’ll scuttle away but if you're patient, quiet, he'll retum and gain confidence. Soon, when he's comfortable, he'll sit up on your lap or he'll hop up tiying to nudge your nose with his, he'll curl himself into you, happy again.

Shay is wonderful, wonderfully tender and sweet, wonderfully sensitive. He’d benefit from a house and an owner which is likewise. Please give him a chance.

It's now February and Shiloh is now ready to find a new loving home after all this time!

SHILOH IS A SPECIAL NEEDS CASE SO WE KNOW MANY PEOPLE WILL TURN AWAY FROM HIM AFTER READING THIS WHICH IS VERY SAD.

Shiloh was an abandonment and the owner was known to the RSPCA

as they had already taken another dog from the property.

Shiloh unfortunately was overweight, had a cough and couldn't go under GA in order to X-ray his hips and legs as it was O

clear he had problems in those areas.

He has since lost approx. 4 kg and has had his x-rays.

Shiloh is a super dog and therefore it's tragic that he has quite a severe degree of hip dysplasia and Luxating Patellas.He will need ongoing medication such as pain relief and joint supplements. His new owner will need to make sure he maintains a healthy weight and manages his exercise so he doesn't overdo things and keep his medical condition under review with a vet. Shiloh does enjoy going out for short, regular walks. Unfortunately, our vet feels his condition will be life limiting, so it's

unlikely he'll make it to a grand old age. I-ie can be rehomed with children of secondary school age, but would be best suited to a pet free home. Shiloh is such a lovely boy, very friendlylwell-mannered and always happy to meet and be with people. He walks well on lead and can be left for short periods.

Hello readers and welcome to our page. Spring is in the air now and we cats are looking forward to going outside in our garden a lot more than

we have done for the past few months.

We cannot believe what our strokers have done now, they have only gone and got another one of those dog things. Yes they have got a shrunken version of the last dog that lived here, so our lounge is now in a bit of a mess where they have puppy proofed it to stop the little devil going where he shouldn't. To be fair they have not stopped in their care

for us and in fact it probably has increased, so we think this is their guilt for letting another one of those woof machines move into our home.

Anyway enough about this thing that they have called Griff. We gang of

cats have been keeping to the Covid rules throughout the pandemic and as you can see from the photo below we have taken up Social Distance Sleeping.As you can see Amber was not on here when this was taken as she probably was working on her Ask Amber page.

Augustus and Muffin, two very beautiful bunnies. Augustus (Gus for short) looks a bit Hare like in shape but quite small like a Mini Rex. He was adopted and bonded back in 2018 but his partner has since died so he was bonded with Muffin from another branch so he was no longer bereaved, but the owners already had plans to move and do not want to continue with rabbit ownership, so they are looking for a new home. We are rehoming them directly from their current home.

Prior to this Gus had a terrible life, along with 50 other rabbits, all with no food or water, living in filthy conditions. It's no wonder he was so frightened of everything way back when. Muffin was advertised on social media and the other branch stepped in because of the conditions she was kept in. They are neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. They need a young child free and dog free home. Some information from current owner: Gus and Muffin are a bonded pair and like to be close to each other most of the time.

They are both friendly and curious, they'll come sprinting across the garden if they think you've got a small treat for them! Muffin is happy to be stroked but Gus really only likes you to stroke his nose. Neither of them dig, although Muffin is very good at pruning (I) They live free range in the day, they love sitting in the sun, pottering around and nibbling the lawn, but come into their wooden run very happily in the evening as they know dinner is in there. They are no bother to look after, very easy going. Although of course they don't like

being picked up! Augustus has had Gut Stasis in the past which sadly is common among rabbits but always be mindful as rabbit owners!

I've lived in Buxton for 25 years with my lovely wife Claire, we have 2 kids, a dog and 2 cats.

I've worked in the IT sector most of my adult Iife,spencling the last 21 years in the NHS - so even though I am new to charity work I hope to bring in some useful skills to help everyone out!

The RSPCA vision is a world where aii animals are respected and treated with kindness and compassion. i wiii do my best to appiy this vision - to improve the weifare of ahimais and their owirers in our area. and to get the most pub/ic benefit out of the work we do."

The sun seems to be coming out and Covid seems to be on the decline so we thought that the time is right again to bring out the judges and the rosettes and hold some dog shows in the area.

So far we have three in the pipeline, and they are as follows; June 2nd - Congleton Park , 12.00 to 4.00pm. This show will be part of the Queens Jubilee celebrations being organised

by Congleton Council.One of our categories will have to be The Most Regal Looking Dog! June 18th - Buxton Pavilion Gardens (venue tbc) 12.00 to 4.00pm. This event will be part of the National RSPCA Fun Day where events will be happening across the Country.

July 2nd - Chelmorton Village Full details will appear on our Facebook page nearer to the event.

Holly and Belle came in via an RSPCA Inspector (with Jasper and Louis also looking for homes} who said this was one of the worst cases he's ever had to deal with: 39 cats were crammed in cages and dog crates {one of which had 9 cats inside) in a house! They were living 24!? like that in their own toilet, hence the yellow staining of the fur. Can you imagine the pain, physically and mentally, that these cats endured living in those conditions?

Belle and Holly LOVE to play. They love to chase balls, toys or each other around the house and are starting to show their great little personalities.

They are very entertaining to watch and when they are tired of playing they like to nap or watch out of the window.

They are a cheeky little pair and are starting to become much more confident around people. Holly and Belle like to relax with your at their own safe distance. At night the like to sneak up on to your bed to snuggle up and chase your toes!

They will be best in a spacious, calm household with either older children or adults only and no pets.

Holly will happily be picked up and stroked every now and then especially when she wants food or you have given her some food, but she is often too busy playing.

Belle will happily be stroked when she is just relaxing. Belle loves to relax in places where she feels safe with some kind of top to it, box, under coffee tables, chairs under a table etc Both cats are not used to sitting on laps yet and this may take some time.

Belle — Due to her long hair, she does get mats — when she lets you, she loves being brushed. As she gets more relaxed over time she will get better at grooming herself.

Holly - Has a little chin acne. It's not causing any issue right now she just scratches her chin sometimes — she may need steroids but they are very cheap if she requires it.

They have been neutered, vaccinated, tested negative for FlViFeLV and microchipped. They are looking for a special personis to let them settle and adjust in their own time. If any cat needs a chance to live in a lovely home this pair certainly do!

Our dear old girl was sadly put to sleep at the age of 23 last year. We adopted her along with her sibling over 11 years ago from the RSPCA. We had 12 very happy years with her, it took her almost 2 years to even lie on our laps but once she realised how warm and comfortable said laps were she was addicted! She was the most affectionate, softest and loving cat we could ever wish for. We miss her dearly and still shed tears over her loss because we miss her so very much. However, there are so many unwanted cats sat in cattery pens needing loving homes, so we adopted a 12 year old black moggy who has helped us overcome our grief, but more importantly we have helped him.

Tammy can never be replaced, she is forever in our hearts.

There was a flurry of activity in the press recently about the plans by parliament to introduce legislation making the microchipping a legal requirement for owned cats and kittens aged twenty weeks and older. The preceding consultation received 99% support in favour of the proposals.

And, of course, there is already compulsion to implant microchips in dogs by eight weeks old.

The proper name for the device is a Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFED) and, in the form used in companion animals, it comprises a minute electronic circuit and wire coil housed in a sealed glass capsule. The capsule may be coated to help stop the microchip migrating under the animal's coat once implanted. Typically they measure 12mm long by 2.1mm diameter and weigh 0.09g but mini-chips are available too {better suited to cats and other small animals up to 15kg) which are just 8mm long by 1.4mm and weigh 0.03g —they are tiny! They are implanted subcutaneously in the host animal using a hollow needle — in cats and dogs the implant site is between the shoulder blades.

The microchips do not contain a power source but rather collect energy and power up when exposed to a the low power radio signal emitted by a chip reader or, indeed, an electronic cat flap. The reader detects minute changes in the amount of power drawn by the microchip which correspond to a unique 15 digit code burnt into the microchip’5 semiconductors. Some microchips also add further digits corresponding to the temperature of the host animal. ~

An example of the code is ’900 164 001 098 972’ with the first three digits identifying the manufacturer. On its own the number means nothing, so each manufacturer is linked to one of a number of databases which records details of the animal and its owner.

The microchips are highly reliable and very rarely fail; but, and this is the pinch, unless owners remember to _ update their details when they change address or get a new telephone number / email address the whole system starts to fall apart. There are wonderful stories of animals being reunited with their owners after years of separation thanks to the power of a microchip but, for every happy reunification there are many more that fail because of broken links.
