Welcome to the 20th season of Round Rock Express baseball!

We are so thrilled that you are joining us at Dell Diamond during our historic 2019 campaign. We sincerely thank you for your support. As we continue a new era of Express baseball, we couldn’t be more excited about this season and the future of professional baseball in Round Rock.

We have enjoyed many exciting games during our first few months as the new Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. We are thrilled to have rejoined our original major league club, as your Express originally served as the Double-A affiliate for the Astros from the team’s inception in 2000 until joining the ranks of Triple-A in 2005, where Round Rock was Houston’s top affiliate until 2010. As we’ve seen first-hand, Houston has built a tremendous farm system full of many top prospects that are playing right here at Dell Diamond.

We pride ourselves on being able to provide a major league caliber atmosphere for players to develop at the Triple-A level, and we’re always excited to see Express players earn promotions to Houston. Like most of you, we watched with anticipation as a wave of E-Train players earned promotions to Houston last month. RHP Corbin Martin, RHP Brady Rodgers, OF Derek Fisher, C Drew Stubbs, INF Jack Mayfield and INF Myles Straw were all called upon to join the major league club when the Astros experience a rash of injuries in late May. Since then, OF Yordan Alvarez, RHP Rogelio Armenteros, RHP Cy Sneed and RHP Jose Urquidy have all spent time with the Astros. We couldn’t be more proud of the way they represented Round Rock and our club during their time on baseball’s biggest stage.

Back at home, July brought the return of professional soccer to Dell Diamond as Santos and Toluca traveled to the Sports Capital of Texas for a Liga MX friendly earlier this month. We are always proud to showcase the versatility of Dell Diamond while bringing international attention to our hometown.

As we enter the second half of the season, we are eyeing what should be an exciting conclusion to the inaugural Triple-A version of the I-35 Rivalry Series between Round Rock and the San Antonio Missions. Both the Express and Missions have battled for the top spot in the division standings for much of the season and we’re looking forward to what could be an exciting pennant race down the stretch.

As we continue our momentous season, we sincerely hope that your time at the ballpark is as enjoyable as possible. If there is ever anything that either of us or any member of our staff can do to enhance your experience at Dell Diamond, please let us know.

COACHING STAFF MICKEY STOREY MANAGER Mickey Storey joins the Express from the Class-A Quad Cities River Bandits, where he began his managerial career in 2018.

The 32-year-old skipper led the River Bandits to an 81-59 record in 2018, the second-best mark in the Midwest League and the club's highest win total since 2015. Prior to his time in Quad Cities, Storey served as the development coach at Class-A Advanced Buies Creek in 2017. The former right-handed pitcher had a nine-year professional playing career that included one season with the Astros in 2012 in which he posted a 3.86 ERA in 26 appearances with the Major League club.

Storey was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he attended nearby Deerfield Beach High School before moving on to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. He was drafted twice in his career, first by the Minnesota Twins in the 22nd round of the 2007 MLB Draft and again by the Oakland Athletics in the 31st round of the 2008 MLB Draft. During his nine-year professional career, Storey pitched at every level of affiliated baseball, including stints with Sacramento and Oklahoma City in the Pacific Coast League. He also posted winter ball stints in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela. He finished his playing career in 2016 following two seasons with the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic League. In total, the righty amassed a career 3.52 ERA in 385 games.

BEN ROSENTHAL HITTING COACH Ben Rosenthal begins his third season within the Astros organization after serving as the hitting coach for championship clubs in each of his first two seasons with Houston, including 2018 at Buies Creek and 2017 at Quad Cities. The former catcher posted a four-year professional career, including two seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system and two seasons in the independent leagues. The 39-year-old last suited up for the El Paso Diablos in 2006 before transitioning into a coaching role. Rosenthal served as an assistant coach at Universal City High School in San Diego before moving on to Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. He moved back to San Diego in 2013 to serve as the head coach for Mira Mesa High School. His last coaching position before joining the Astros was at Point Loma Nazarene University from 2014-2016.

Originally born in Phoenix, Rosenthal grew up in Las Vegas, where he attended Green Valley High School. After two years of playing junior college baseball at Riverside City College, he transferred to San Diego State University, where he completed his degree in kinesiology with a supplement in introductory sciences. He later earned a master's degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific.

DREW FRENCH PITCHING COACH Drew French enters his fourth season in the Astros organization but his first at the Triple-A level. He helped to build championship clubs in each of the last two seasons, serving as the pitching coach for the 2018 Carolina League Champion Buies Creek Astros as well as the 2017 Midwest League Champion Quad Cities River Bandits. He began his Astros career as a coach with the Short Season Tri-City Valley Cats in 2016.

A native of Austin, French attended Stephen F. Austin High School and Concordia University, graduating in 2006 with a degree in marketing and management. He was named a three-time Academic All-Southwestern Conference selection during his playing career at Concordia. The 35-year-old served as the Director of Baseball Operations for the University of Alabama from 2009-2011 before acting as the pitching coach at Florida International University from 2012-2013 and Lee University from 2014-2015.

Josh Peterson enters his first season in the Astros organization as the Performance Coach for the Round Rock Express.

Peterson recently graduated from the University of North Georgia, where he was a member of the Nighthawks baseball program before serving as a sports performance guidance assistant with the university's athletic strength and conditioning department.

Prior to joining the Astros organization, Peterson worked at Authentic Performance Center and was the summer collegiate head coach of the Colorado Rough Riders baseball club in 2017.

Peterson received both his masters and bachelor's degrees in kinesiology from the University of North Georgia while also earning an associate's degree from Northeast Mississippi Community College. Peterson played on the baseball team at Northeast Mississippi from 2015-2015 and at North Georgia from 2016-2017. While at UNG, he helped his program reach the Division II National Championship in 2017.

Peterson is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

JOHN GREGORICH ATHLETIC TRAINER John Gregorich returns to the Astros for his sixth season but his first as the Athletic Trainer for the Round Rock Express.

Prior to joining the E-Train, Gregorich served as the Athletic Trainer for the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks in 2018, Class-A Advanced Buies Creek Astros in 2017, the Short Season Tri-City Valley Cats from 2015-2016 and for the Rookie-level Greeneville Astros in 2014. He was named the 2014 PBATS Appalachian League Athletic Trainer of the Year.

Before joining the Astros, Gregorich was a sports medicine intern for the Cleveland Indians in 2013. He also interned with the Indians' Class-A affiliate, the Lake County Captains, in 2012. Gregorich served as a graduate student assistant for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga during the 2012 football season.

While in Chattanooga, he received a master of science degree in athletic training in 2013. Gregorich previously earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky.

Originally from Chardon, Ohio, Gregorich and his wife Chrystal and son William currently reside in West Palm Beach, Florida.

DWAYNE PETERSON STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH Dwayne Peterson returns to the Astros for his sixth season as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, but his first in Round Rock. Peterson joined the Astros in 2014 at Rookie-level Greeneville before stints at Class-A Quad Cities in 2015, Class-A Advanced Lancaster in 2016, Double-A Corpus Christi in 2017 and Triple-A Fresno in 2018. During the 2017 offseason, he also served as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League.

Prior to joining the Astros, Peterson completed strength and conditioning internships with Northern Kentucky University and the College of Mount St. Joseph, where he was responsible for the school's baseball strength and conditioning program. During the offseason, he serves as the head baseball strength coach at Mount St. Joseph.

Peterson is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach and is a USA Weightlifting Level 1 Sports Performance Coach.

He received his bachelor of science degree in exercise science in 2013 from Northern Kentucky, where he is now pursuing his master of business administration degree.

During the offseason, Peterson is a competitive powerlifter in his home of Erlanger, Kentucky.

STOP, HOUSTON Rehabs and reinforcements roll through Round Rock

By Andrew Felts M A N AG ER , P R & C OMMUN I CAT I ON S The pregame buzz that surrounds Dell Diamond was significantly higher on Friday, June 14. Houston Astros orange and navy was the preferred attire for thousands of fans hoping to get a glimpse of one of the game’s brightest young stars. Astros 2B Jose Altuve was making his Dell Diamond debut as part of a major league rehab assignment as he worked his way back from a hamstring injury.

Altuve was joined in his rehab appearance by fellow Astros RHP Collin McHugh and C Max Stassi. To have three concurrent major league rehab assignments in Round Rock highlighted not only a rare injury situation involving the Houston Astros, but also the integral role that minor league organizations, particularly at the Triple-A level, play for their major league affiliates.

In the span of one week, from May 21 to May 27, five Astros players were added to the team’s Injured List, resulting in five promotions to the big leagues for Express players. The injury wave originally began nine days prior, when Altuve was added to the Injured List and E-Train RHP Corbin Martin was promoted to make his major league debut.

McHugh was the next to be added to the IL on May 21, paving the way for RHP Brady Rodgers’ return to the bigs.

On May 25, Astros OF George Springer was added to the IL and OF Derek Fisher was recalled from Round Rock.

One day later, Stassi was shelved and Express C Garrett Stubbs was called upon to fill the vacated roster spot.

Finally, on May 27, both Houston INF Aledmys Diaz and INF Carlos Correa were sent to the IL while Round Rock INF Jack Mayfield and OF Myles Straw were promoted to the Astros, capping off a series of events that changed the complexion of both Houston’s and Round Rock’s roster.

“I was surprised at the wave of injuries,” Express Manager Mickey Storey said. “The fact that these guys have been able to get to the big leagues and play in the big leagues is not surprising. I know the caliber of player we have in Round Rock, but the flock of injuries all at the same time was unique. To lose five or six guys in a week, that was a little surprising.”

The rash of injures in Houston allowed an opportunity for six Round Rock players to become big leaguers, some for the first time, but each with a unique path and a unique story. As the first callup from Round Rock, Martin fulfilled his lifelong dream of suiting up for his hometown

team. A native of Houston, Martin made his major league debut on May 12, holding the Texas Rangers to two runs on three hits while striking out nine in 5.1 strong innings.

Rodgers was next, completing the arduous journey back to Houston after undergoing Tommy John surgery after his first big league season in 2016. The Richmond, Texas native made his major league debut in late 2016 before a right elbow injury caused him to miss much of the next two seasons. Rodgers entered the 2019 season with Round Rock healthy and seeking any opportunity to get back to the major leagues.

“What an awesome story, to work his way back from Tommy John and being on the shelf for a long time. That was exciting to get to promote Brady because I know the work he has put in,” Storey said. “To see him get the opportunity to get back on the field in the big leagues after three years was awesome.”

Fisher became the next in line to join the Astros, where he logged major league service time for the third consecutive season. Just days later, Stubbs was given the opportunity to make his major league debut in his first career promotion to Houston. The backstop had spent parts of the last three seasons at the Triple-A level, perfecting his craft so that he would be ready when his time came.

“Stubbs has been phenomenal. We knew he’d get his opportunity at some point because of the way the catcher position goes, but for him to get the opportunity and answer the call, he has done a heck of a job behind the dish,” Storey said. “He’s the type of player that doesn’t get enough credit for the way he plays the game. He plays the game to win and he plays the game hard. I am happy as heck for him for the opportunity and the job he’s done up there.”

Mayfield and Straw made the journey to Houston together, as both were called up on May 27. One of the most dynamic players in the game, Straw returned to Houston for the second time in his career, where he once again got the opportunity to showcase both his elite baserunning and outfield speed as well as his hitting ability.

“Myles Straw is such an impactful player and he can do so much. He is so dynamic and is another guy that I’m really proud of. To see him transition over the years into a really, really solid major league caliber baseball player is fun to watch. His defense is great, but he doesn’t get enough credit for the way he swings the bat. He’s a guy that has hit over .300 in his career in the minor leagues and is swinging the bat really well in the big leagues so it’s thrilling and I’m happy for him,” Storey said.

Of all the Express players to receive a call to the majors last month, the most inspiring is perhaps INF Jack Mayfield. The 28-year-old endured parts of seven seasons in the minor leagues before receiving his first opportunity. Signed by the Astros in 2013, Mayfield appeared at the Triple-A level for parts of the last four seasons prior to his

first career promotion to Houston.

“What a great story. We’re talking about a nondrafted free agent, really the epitome of a grinder.

Jack played it out and an opportunity arose, and his name got called because he was having a really good start to the season in Round Rock,” Storey said. “I’m proud of him and really thrilled for him.

It couldn’t have happened to a better guy and a better family.”

Especially when the moment comes for someone as deserving as Mayfield, getting to let players know that their dream of becoming a big leaguer has come true is a highlight of Storey’s managerial duties.

“It varies transaction by transaction, but when a player is going to get called up, we like to have a great sendoff,” Storey said. “We have had some fun with a couple of them. We’ve celebrated quite big in the locker room, put guys in laundry baskets and dumped water on them, stuff like that. Any time you get to the big leagues, it’s a celebration and it should be treated as such, so we do our best to give them a good sendoff.”

Since the late May wave of injuries, four additional Express players received the call to join the Astros, LHP Cionel Pérez, OF Yordan Alvarez, RHP Rogelio Armenteros and RHP Cy Sneed. For the Express to have such an impact on Houston's active roster is special in and of itself, but for those players to have success is icing on the cake for Storey. Through Sneed’s major league debut on June 27, players that were on Round Rock’s Opening Day roster have appeared in 39 games for Houston this season, with the team posting a 21-18 record in those contests.

“To see our guys have success and mix in to be an integral part of the team, whether it be through injury or straight promotion, it just means that our player development is doing a heck of a job.

I think we’ve seen good things out of all of those guys so far. They’ve all had their days when they’ve contributed to a win in the major leagues, which is ultimately the goal,” Storey said.

Of course, as Express players are promoted to the Astros, spots become available on Round Rock’s roster as well, allowing the next wave of talent to join the ranks of Triple-A. Though the end of June, 19 different players had made their Triple-A debuts with the Express, each contributing to the success that Round Rock has found in 2019.

“The [players that have been promoted to Round Rock] have done a phenomenal job. I think it speaks to our player development staff in general and level-by-level, the way we’re working with these players, trying to keep one message and one way of getting work done,” Storey said.

“Everyone who has come through the door has contributed to some extent. It just goes back to the way we develop players. Everyone is prepared and it can be almost interchangeable at any level.”

The final piece of the puzzle comes when the injured major leaguers are ready to return to action and begin rehab assignments. Having

the likes of Altuve, McHugh and Stassi suit up in Express uniforms is not only fun for the fans, but can also be beneficial to the rest of the players in the Round Rock locker room.

“It’s good for our guys to be around those types of players, not just major league players, but major league character guys. Jose, Collin and Max are three of the best human beings I’ve ever been around. I couldn’t hand-pick three guys I’d rather be around our club than those three,” Storey said. “They each expressed to me how good of an environment this was and how fun it was. For them to tell me that, it just shows that all is well in Round Rock. They’re having to come back from an injury, which is always tough, but they enjoyed their time with us. It was a bit of a whirlwind to have that much attention, but it’s much deserved for those types of players.”

As the core of Houston’s roster begins to return to full strength, many of the players on Round Rock’s Opening Day roster that were promoted to the Astros will begin to return to the Express.

Despite the roster crunch that will inevitably ensue, Round Rock certainly left a permanent mark on Houston’s 2019 season.

“The way they have filled in has been phenomenal. That’s what it’s all about,” Storey said. “We might lose our mainstay guys here for some time, but the ultimate goal is to make them major league players. To have the opportunity that they’ve had, and to do a heck of a job, it’s a dream come true for them.”

Back for More Express RHP Felipe Paulino Eyes Return to The Show Round Rock Express RHP Felipe Paulino has pitched in 97 games at the major league level. For the veteran pitcher currently in his 17th season of professional baseball, getting the opportunity to pitch in game #98 might be the most special.

Paulino joined the Express on June 23 after the Houston Astros signed the reliever to a minor league contract. He had spent parts of the last three seasons pitching for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League.

“This is a great opportunity. When I was in Sugar Land, I spent a lot of time working on my routine, trying to convince teams that I can still be a reliever,” Paulino said. “My last two years in Sugar Land, I performed really well, and it led me here to Round Rock.”

“Really well” is perhaps an understatement considering the 35-year-old combined to go 8-7 with a miniscule 1.61 ERA across 115 relief appearances with the Skeeters from 2017-2019. He surrendered just 21 earned runs on 71 hits across a dominant 117.1 innings pitched in the Atlantic League. While it is unaffiliated, independent baseball, Paulino believes his time with Sugar Land set him up for future success in Round Rock and beyond.

“The Atlantic League is definitely a great league. Pitching with Sugar Land felt like pitching at the Triple-A level,” Paulino said. “There’s a lot of baseball experience there and a lot of veterans that made me feel like it was a high level.

At the same time, it gave me the opportunity to show other teams what I have against good competition.”

Paulino’s baseball career has literally sent him around the world – from his first stop with the Martinsville Astros in Virginia in 2003, to Houston, Kansas City, Denver, Chicago, even to Tokorozawa, Japan, Saltillo, Mexico and Porlamar, Venezuela – but as a resident of the Houston suburbs, his stops in Texas always hold a special place in his heart, particularly in Sugar Land and now in Round Rock.

“In Sugar Land, it was great to be around my family and friends. I got to be with my kids every day. Every morning when I took them to school before I went to the stadium, I felt a lot of comfort being this close to my family,” Paulino said. “Texas is my home and has been for the last 15 years. I love it here. Just being around this ballpark every day makes me happy and makes me love my job even more. Everything is coming along so perfect for me right now.”

Paulino is no stranger to Dell Diamond, having pitched with the Express in 2008 and 2009 during his ascent through the Astros system. He was originally signed by Houston as a non-drafted free agent out of his hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2001. He pitched in eight games with the Express during his first stint with the club, combining to go 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA. “There’s a lot of memories for me here in Round Rock, even coming back 10 years later. There has been a lot of changes in the stadium but being here makes me think about all the great memories I have. To be back in this case, as a veteran, is a blessing. To come back here and help show my teammates the

game and what I’ve learned in my last 17 years in pro ball, it’s a different experience,” Paulino said.

Following seven seasons in the Houston organization, Paulino was traded to the Colorado Rockies organization in 2010. After 18 games in Denver, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals, where he spent the next three seasons between KC and the club’s Double-A and Triple-A affiliates.

After stints with the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians from 2014-2016, Paulino went international, pitching in Japan, Mexico and Venezuela before returning stateside to join Sugar Land. To come full circle and return to the organization that originally signed him is a special feeling for Paulino.

“It is a blessing to be back with the team that originally signed me. I don’t know how this will end up, but I’m just really happy with myself to be back with the team I came up with. I love what I do and to be back in the Astros organization after I spent so many great years here, I am blessed,” Paulino said.

On July 2, Paulino earned the win thanks to a thrilling 7-6 Express victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers, marking his first win at Dell Diamond since August 10, 2009 against the now defunct Portland Beavers. Through his first five games back with Round Rock, Paulino notched a win and three saves.

“Being back, it’s a little bit of a different job. Now, we have the major league ball here in Triple-A and I feel like it’s a little jumpy, but it’s no big deal. I have a lot of experience and I just want to make the right adjustments and prove that I can adjust quickly,” Paulino said.

With over 400 career innings pitched at the major league level, Paulino is hoping those adjustments can help land him back in Houston’s bullpen in the near future. The veteran is confident he still has what it takes to record outs and compete at the highest level of professional baseball.

“Getting back to Houston is my goal. Of course, I don’t have the control to make that call, but my goal is to perform well here, and that’s what I’m trying to do,” Paulino said. “I’m trying to do my best every time I pitch and show people that when I go to the mound, I will do the best to prove that I still have something. At the end of the day, I’ll sacrifice myself, whatever I need to do to help the team win. Getting to do that makes me happy.”

The game of baseball has changed tremendously in the last 17 years, particularly within the Houston Astros organization. The influx of analytics and technology is bringing America’s Pastime into the 21st century. Nearly two decades after his career began, Paulino still finds enjoyment in learning new facets of the game and improving his skills.

“I am always hungry to learn. I want to learn all of the new technology that the Astros are using here and that is coming to baseball. Learning how the game is played today can help me prepare for my future when I retire, which at some point is going to happen. Despite the waves of change since Paulino began his career, he continues to find success on the mound and has learned to embrace each and every day he gets to spend at the ballpark.

“I don’t know that I’m going to make it back to the Astros, so I have learned to just be grateful,” Paulino said. “Whatever happens in my life, I try to enjoy everything. I’m grateful for every situation that happens to me.”

SCORING THE GAME Over the years, the game of baseball has evolved and so have methods for scoring the game. Different fans have different ways of keeping a scorecard, and many use their own notations. Our simple method involves using the symbols on the next page to record each play depending on the outcome. The different numeric positions listed to the right can be used to add further detail.

For example, if a batter flies out to center field, "F8" could be written in the box. If a batter grounds out to third, "G53" would show the third baseman throwing to the first baseman to record the out. Finally, if a shortstop makes an error, "E6" could be used to describe the play.
