Still rockin’

AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!

A

fter 20 years, we’ve certainly grown and this issue of RPM is a perfect example of that. Normally, we’d be hosting our Yellow Bullet Nationals event in the October issue, but with the timing of Tom Bailey’s Woodward PreParty/ RPM Takeover (we couldn’t ask the Woodward people to re-schedule their event now could we?), we had to restructure things and publish it in the November issue. Nonetheless, we always guarantee that our Yellow Bullet Nationals coverage, prepared by Mark Tinari of goDragRacing.org is ALWAYS exclusive to RPM! This month we have not one but two race events, the Yellow Bullet Nationals hosted Monty and Maria Mikho, SMACKDOWN 3 hosted by Ian Hill Racing Productions, and a very special charity event put on by a well known Ford racer from the early days of Pro 5.0, Joe DaSilva. As many readers know, since the dawn of “instant” web coverage of events, we don’t generally cover them in RPM—that is, unless we have some sort of connection or involvement with them. So I’ll give a little history on who, what, and why these events and the people behind them are so important to us.

YELLOW BULLET NATIONALS (YB NATS)

The YB Nats are an exception to our rule simply because Monty has been a close friend for quite some time now and we appreciate what he and Maria have brought to the sport. Many years ago when RPM was the official magazine of the NSCA series (long before Yellow Bullet the forum was even a thought), Monty once said to me how much he appreciated what we brought to the series he was part of. In fact, I still recall the very first time we met. It was in a small restaurant in Grand Bend, Ontario and I was sitting with Rob Barnes and Jim Monson. As Monty was walking by, Barnes stopped him to make the introduction and one of the very first things he said was how much he appreciated what RPM was now bringing to the NSCA. At that time, we were a struggling, small family-owned start-up car mag (maybe five years old) swimming in a pond with some pretty big fish. So you can imagine how much this meant to us. It seemed that all of the racers from the series we covered at the time (NSCA and the OSCA) were so grateful, it truly put extra wind in our sails and we have formed lifelong relationships with many of them.

SMACKDOWN 3

The SMACKDOWN events were actually an

RPM gig. We started running events focusing on racers way back in 1999 and progressed up to running them from Louisiana to Miramichi, New Brunswick and everywhere in between since. The SMACKDOWN was spawned from our War By the Shore (Ohio) and War In The North (Ontario) events and the thought was to include many different race orgs and class styles in the SMACKDOWN package. Life got in the way for Trish and I, though, and we simply couldn’t run events along with our duties at RPM...enter Ian Hill. Like Monty, Ian came to the RPM mix a while ago—as far back as 2002. He owned a slot car store/race facility and saw something in our Street Car Shootout events that he liked, so he sponsored them...and we never forgot that. Years later we formed a mutual relationship through RPM and his race efforts (the guy can drive a race car!) and he is one of the few people on this earth we would entrust with taking over the SMACKDOWN. So, while RPM doesn’t “run” the SMACKDOWN, we still throw every ounce of sweat and energy we can into it to see that it is everything we imagined and more with Ian now at the helm. The original plan was to have one race in Canada and one in the States, and that will happen. Look for more to come on Mr. Hill in an upcoming issue of RPM.

2019 DASILVA RACING SICK KIDS HOSPITAL FUNDRAISER

Joe DaSilva was a world champion Ford racer during the heyday of the Foxbody revolution, but his relationship with RPM goes back to the days when he and his brother Paul put on their street car shootouts. They were groundbreaking events and these guys were some of the first to bring street car style-racing north of the border. In those days, RPM was new and being new was a very tough go. There were no web forums, Facebook, or YouTube and you had to hustle everywhere to get the word out. We could be found at events like these covering them and their racers and handing out free copies of RPM to everyone and anyone who was into cars. Both Joe and Paul continued on in slightly different directions and both have always and still do focus on giving 110% support to the sport of drag racing and street cars and, as this issue proves, well beyond that. For quite a few years now Joe has put on his Sick Kids Hospital fundraiser event and this year we were able to send Rick Kowalczykowski for an inside look at the event to share with our readers. We hope our small contribution helps the event continue to grow and provide even more benefit to such a worthy cause for children.

Fastest Street Car Shootout in Ontario and saw that there was actually a place to race street cars at the local dragstrips. A nitrous-assisted small block was added and the car competed in EZ Street for several years before the turbo bug bit hard. It was time to step up to N/T 275 with some updates. First up, the car was stiffened and prepped for more rig-

orous tech inspection with the addition of a full chromoly cage. Suspension was kept fairly straightforward, with bolt-on pieces from Global West and TRZ used up front (upper and lower control arms, respectively), while a ladder bar setup was employed in the rear. A custom backhalf made room for a larger tire, and a fabbed Bears Performance 9-inch housing

was stuffed with 40-spline axles and a Pro aluminum differential from Strange. Rolling stock consisted of a full set of Champion SFI-approved aluminum wheels with 15x4.5s up front and beadlocked 15x12s in back. A quartet of Wilwood brakes were installed to manage the stopping duties. They are assisted by a single ’chute out back.

Your Recipe for Big Block Mopar Performance! New heads are just one component of the horsepower recipe. To make it complete, you’re going to need some more ingredients.

Track Max® Camshaft Give your big Mopar an even bigger power boost with a Track Max camshaft. It is dyno-proven to produce significant power increases over the entire RPM range, not just a particular RPM.

Cast Aluminum Valve Covers Treat your build to cast aluminum valve covers! They are made from durable A319 aluminum, which is much less prone to flex and distortion than stamped steel covers to prevent oil leaks. Plus, the covers clear most roller rocker arms, have added clearance for the distributor, and can be drilled to accept breathers.

Track Heat® Intake Manifolds Just oozing high performance, these high-rise single plane Track Heat intakes feature a one-piece spider-type design with extended, high-flow runners and raised plenum floors to significantly increase power and torque in the 3,000-7,000 plus RPM range. Other bonuses include bosses for nitrous nozzles and extra material for custom port work.

the exhaust, and added some bolt-ons and got it to 635 rwhp,” Chandler said. “I thought ‘man, a 600 hp street car. What else could I need?’” he said with a laugh. Apparently much, much more. Watching a steady stream of online videos,

Chandler decided a turbo setup was the way to go, opting for a single 7675 Precision unit first before most recently stepping up to a pair of 68/70 Precision Turbo units. To handle the 20+ pounds of boost, Chandler and friend Colin Welsh freshened the

The exterior of the car is all original, with only the single chute hung near the rear fascia deviating from the sleek 2003 SVT lines. The well-preserved original Sonic Blue paint looks as deep and flawless today as the day it rolled off the Ford assembly line 16 years ago. The end result

was everything Chandler was hoping for and more. The most recent combo was good for a pass of 8.69 @ 156 mph after driving to the track and then driving home afterwards. But that’s about all he has in mind for this particular build. “In the future, if I want to build

something faster, I will probably just pick up a Fox or older Mustang to build it more radical, but I don’t want to cut this car up,” he said. Given the fact that you’ve smashed every goal you’ve ever had for this car, we’d say that’s a pretty smart plan, Jeff.

his is dedicated to those who look at cars simply as a means of transportation, and to those who, for lack of better words….judge others. I was elbow-deep in

a 1968 Barracuda dashboard thoroughly enjoying myself as I created “wiring art,” (yes, I take my skills as a wiring specialist so serious that I call it art), when I heard my buddies talking about the different categories of car owners. I have to admit—I was quite

amused at the creativity of this ridiculous shop talk discussion, which included categories such as daily drivers who know nothing about cars, daily drivers who fix their own, seasonal cars, cruise night cars, parade cars, driven show cars, trailered show

cars, project cars, weekend warrior cars, racecars, and many more too long to list here. They even talked about how much each car actually gets driven—if at all. When the conversation shifted to judging each category, I decided to extract myself from the advanced

yoga/circus contortionist position I was in under the dash and chime in on the heated discussion. Without knowing it, they grouped me into just about every category except the first two listed above. You see, my car—like most gearhead mechanic cars—

2: I am no different from the rest of those who live on Planet Gearhead. I love cars with all my heart. I bleed gears, turbos, horsepower, and nuts/bolts. It is at the very core of my DNA. When you pour your heart into something you enjoy, don’t let anyone come in and steal your joy

2 3: We all have reasons for making the decisions we do in life. When it comes to choosing the car that is right for us, there is no difference. I like angry pistons and

started out as a project car/money pit. It sat for years without even running, let alone being drivable. When I got it running, it became a weekend warrior. Once it was operating on a basic level, it needed to be tested and tuned. When it was finally performing the way it was supposed to, my focus was to make it look as good as possible. Living in the northeast, it was most definitely a seasonal car. It wasn’t long before it was also a cruise night car and eventually a driven show car. During this entire time, it was first and foremost our family racecar. As the upgrades became more serious and costly, so did my attention and focus to detail and looks. The performance upgrades eventually stopped me from driving it to cruise nights and car shows, and I became dependent on my trailer to get me to fun places. However, this did not stop me from taking my daughter for ice cream once in a while, terrorizing a friend with a test hit when they visited, or taking money from someone with a so called “fast car” on the street. I keep it registered and insured even to this date just for those special occasions. After many years of hard work and sacrifice, our family racecar has taken on many roles. It’s now a trailered show car, tradeshow booth car (a category they didn’t come up with), and with the most recent cosmetic upgrades has been invited to prestigious indoor

shows. All along this amazing journey, though, the Camaro has never stopped being our family racecar and my project car. Any true gearhead that has the performance virus is in a constant state of improvement. All you have to do is flip through a few pages of RPM Magazine and you’ll find many ways to make your car faster, lighter, safer, and eventually more beautiful. My poor friends had no idea they poured salt on an open wound. I was still stewing from a discussion I had with a spectator at a recent car show I was at in support of a local fire department. He walked around my car for a few minutes and asked who the owner was. When I came over he said, “boy she sure is a beautiful car, it’s a shame you can’t drive it anymore.” I replied with, “what do you mean?” He went on to tell me that the engine was so clean that it’s obvious it’s never driven, let alone started and run. Knowing that actions are louder than words, I squeezed my way into the driver’s seat to fire up my monster. She was parked under the canopy against my trailer and the noise had nowhere to go. That nasty big block scared the grease off of his fingers as he jumped back about 10 feet. I whacked the throttle a few times and powered the beast down. As I climbed out of the car between the roll cage, I explained to him that I just got back from a no-prep airstrip race I hosted followed by a three-day car show where I drove around the fairgrounds all weekend and lit the tires in an 8-second

SHOP TALK show car parade lap for the fans. So much for “…it’s a shame you can’t drive it anymore.” Just because I suffer from an extreme case of OCD, don’t ever accuse my car of not being able to run. As you can tell, I am completely over that encounter, and when the guys started talking about those categories and judging the people in them, well, I went off the deep end. As a rule of thumb, don’t judge others. You never know what’s going on in someone’s life until you walk in their shoes. More often than not, you would never want to wear those shoes again. And why be so judgmental when it comes to personal preference in someone’s hobby? Don’t judge the wealthy car enthusiast who pays a guy to build him a car so he can take it to cruise nights and shows. He loves cars just as much as the guy who can fix them. While a gearhead makes sweat equity sacrifice building their own car, the wealthy guy makes a financial sacrifice paying someone to build it. The bottom line is they both love cars and enjoy using them however they wish to. This reminds me of a time when I was waiting in the staging lanes and overheard a group of bracket racers making fun of a guy and his car in front of us. I’m a kid at heart and love just about anything that someone brings to the track, so I went over to him. I had a blast talking to this guy about his eyesore of a Honda Civic. I might add that it was bone stock and barely made the 25-mile journey just to race. Nonetheless, this was someone’s racecar, and I totally admire and respect him and everyone else who does this. I listened to him as he explained the plans he had for his car. While he was talking, his face lit up and there was a sparkle

42

in his eye. I told him we were not so different. He gave me a perplexed look and asked what I meant. “Your car is beautiful, and it’s done,” he said. I told him yes, it seemed that way and went on to explain the vision I had for the future of my car. He gave me the head nod that only a car guy or gal can give another and a fist bump that said it all. Two cars behind me in the staging lanes, guys were laughing at him and his car. I’m sorry, but that disgusts me! Newsflash: not everyone goes to the track to show off a $100K piece of art. Not everyone goes to the track to dominate and set track records. Some of us, like me, go to the track because it’s medicine for the trials of life. It makes a week of hard work seem worth it. It beats dreaming about it and watching it on TV. Whatever category you were foolishly placed in doesn’t matter. The very fact that you were placed in one is because you have the virus and fever that goes along with an addiction for cars. Most of the people who judge cars this way are the people who simply look at cars as a means of transportation (no disrespect to my friends). And as I preach all of the time, it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks in the first place. It is your car and it brings you joy, end of subject! Now I have to get back to work on a beautiful 1968 Petty Blue Plymouth Barracuda for a guy who wants to drive it, show it, abuse it on weekends, and make memories that will last him and his family a lifetime. My friends, there is nothing better than that in my eyes, unless maybe if it was also a 5-second Pro Mod. Until next time...keep Wrenching!

november 2019 | RPM Magazine

4: To those guys in the staging lanes making fun of my new friend with the Honda Civic: mind your own business and worry about your own car. I am happy to tell you that he loves his car just as much as we love our cars.

5

5: This is what I was elbows-deep in while my friends had their ridiculous discussion. I do have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them from under that dash until they accidentally hit a nerve with me.

6 6: My friends kept me entertained long enough to finish creating this custom power board for that ’68 Cuda. The “fun time” for me begins with connecting all of the wires to those Buss bars.

the road waiting for the gate to open, and day one is only testing… we knew it would be a fantastic race weekend! By 12-noon the pits were overloaded with everything from Radial vs. the World cars,

Outlaw10.5, Pro Street, Small Tire Shootout, 235 Outlaws, index racers, sportsman racers, and junior dragster entries alike—all looking forward to being the last woman, man, or even junior dragster

driver standing to hoist up the coveted heavyweight championship belt that all the class champions of the RPM Smackdown3 would be taking home … along with guaranteed cash payouts!

RPM EXCLUSIVE TESTING 1, 2...WOAH...THIS TRACK HAS TEETH!

By mid-day Friday, most of the pit spots were taken and the late-comers were filling in the gaps! The TMP track prep crew was hard at it, getting ready for what was sure to be thousands and thousands of horsepower testing the surface. As always with any track test day, the big guns were cautiously assuming the prep would “come around” later in the session. However, word got around the pits very quickly with the first few cars down that the track was producing record-quick ETs. And when a few small-tire cars put it on the back bumper, everyone knew that this long-anticipated race that had been postponed in July was finally going down—and the track would not be a determining factor between winning or losing.

SMACKDOWN 3 The test session was highlighted by Eric Webber’s 235 Outlaw Green Bastard Mustang riding a near-vertical wheelstand out for about 300 feet and Jay Misener’s four-eye just about flipping over backwards, clearly lifting both rear wheels off the ground with his bumper-dragging newly-nitrous-equipped stick Street275 combo. Then of course there was Manitoba Pete and his first time on 10.5Ws getting down quicker and quicker each pass, Nick Agostino’s Radial vs. the World ’69 Camaro moved to slicks for this race and made gain after gain. The stories of traction and ETs just kept flowing back to the registration area all day long.

GO TIME

Saturday morning, even more racers lined up to the road and beyond. As the gates opened, spectators were wide-eyed to the amount of race cars on the property. The vendor midway was abuzz about the day’s No-Time Grudge shootout classes—better known as the RPM Magazine Smackdown3. Although this was our first time hosting this event at TMP, it was for certain not our first rodeo! Small Tire NoTime Shootout racing is in its seventh year in Ontario, Canada and came from humble beginnings of around 12 cars at the first event and continued to grow from

ACCURATE GROUND SPEED REGARDLESS OF WHEEL SPIN OR WHEEL STAND

THIRD-GEN TERROR BBC nitrous racer Frankie Doldo trying his hand in Outlaw for the second year in a row. there. The continued partnership with RPM Magazine made for high expectations with their 20+ years of running some of the best streetcar-style heads-up events in Canada and the USA. Together, RPM Magazine and Ian Hill Racing Productions have created one of the biggest racer-focused events in Canada and 2019’s running of the Smackdown is just another step up in the staircase. The heads-up pro pits were filled with the Wiseco Piston Outlaw

Extreme class cars, Hitman Hotrods Limited 28 cars, LenTech Automatics 235Outlaws, and some wild pro mods that came to put on a show on what was sure to be near the best track prep of the season. In front of the pro pits was the vendor area headed by RPM Magazine, Hitman Hotrods awesome hotrod display of one of their latest projects, representatives of our SnapOn sponsor, and RCR Race Cars custom golf cart display. Rounding out a solid turnout were street class cars along with Faculty Maintenance and Construction bikes, more ISD

Insurance bracket cars than we imagined, and a great showing of SG Metal Works junior dragsters. $39,800! That’s right, if you weren’t on the grounds, you weren’t going to get any of it! With guaranteed payouts in every class, this single-day event payout won’t be seen again anytime soon— well, maybe in 280 more days! By the time our SMACKDOWN headsup program eliminations were started, sportsman classes were proving their on-track prowess. Pro and Super Pro both had some amazing round wins

Add ground speed to any Racepak V-Net recorder or dash, utilizing our new GPS Ground Speed module. • Requires no externally mounting rpm sensor pick-up • Requires no calibration or special programming • V-Net plug and play installation simplicity

Automatics 235Outlaws with Corrado Lentinello and his 427 SBF F1 ProCharged combo, Ryan Shulze in his top-secret displacement “with tons of nitrous” four-eye ’Stang and Eric Webber with his LS twin-turbo Green Bastard Mustang making it to the semifinals. After a killer race, it was Ryan Shulze’s nitrous Ford headed to the finals against Lentinello’s ProCharged SBF who pulled the late round bye.

Hitman Hotrods Limited28s was filled with hitters from Ontario, Quebec, and New York state, and after two early day test hits, it was anyone’s game! The passes the final four made to get to the semis were outstanding. 2018 Smackdown2 Champion Luc Ricard with his all-aluminum SBF single turbo ’02 Stang was set to take on radial master Adam Bastarache in his X275-legal SBF/88mm turbo 2000 Mustang,

SMACKDOWN 3 while on the other side of the ladder Anthony Daversa’s BBC single-stage nitrous Fox body was set to take on Ed Mcguinn and his fresh nitroused Pontiac mill 2000 Firebird—Grim Reaper 1.5 (remember to ask Ed why it’s 1.5). Faculty Maintenance and Construction Street Bike action was insane as usual. With their stock wheelbase and unlimited power adder options, it’s no wonder they are knocking at the 8-second door! With the semifinalists coming to the line in their pairings—Randy Hope vs. Nick Kempers and JP Calandra vs. Sean Saliba—we were all on edge for who could lay down the number!

The Wiseco Pistons Outlaw class was winding down as Grumpy Pete Palladino in his massive 700inch BBC multistage fogger system 2000 Firebird, Joe D’Sousa in his unique and wildy quick 118mm turbo SBF-equipped 2012 GXP (that’s right we said GXP!), and Nick Agostino’s sleek and slick small block twin 94mm turbo ’69 Camaro were headed into the semis. Clear Shot Customs Street275 class lost a few rounds to the late night oil down with the next round having Michael Silva piloting his SBF ProCharged Fox body lined up against Richard Cornwell’s 565-inch BBC single kit nitroused ’66 Chevy

SMACKDOWN 3 Nova getting the bye run. With all classes set and ready to do battle to the finish, for the first time ever, unfortunately the SMACKDOWN could not be completed due to a combination of factors. A serious evening oil down coupled with a consistent timing system malfunction that reared its ugly head Saturday evening and could not be overcome meant that—with the best interests of the racers, sponsors, and fans in mind and to maintain the integrity of the event— the race would end in a purse split among those left in each class. It was the right call after diligent efforts to correct the problem gave no guarantee

52

that a Sunday finish would be successful. Notwithstanding, the Smackdown3 race weekend was an amazing show of horsepower and tuning, with not a ballwasher amongst the competition! When there’s a no-time event happening, it has been said that the announcers lack the information to keep the crowd informed, but Smackdown Sportsman class announcers Rob Potter and Bill Richards know their history and are an amazing pair. Heads-up pro category announcers Chris Biro and Kelly Cooper have been a staple at many of the Ian Hill Racing Productions races and kept fans going with energy and excitement through it all. ...continued on page 80

RPM EXCLUSIVES MOPAR-TO YA It’s no secret that Chrysler products aren’t usually the most cost-effective means of going fast, but their owners are a passionate lot. t’s been said that the pioneer gets the arrows. Being among the first to tackle innovation is often a road paved with detractors, naysayers, and challenges—or in the case of Keswick, Ontario Canada resident Dennis Walker— Challengers.

“I built this car because no one was doing it at the time,” he said. “My very first car was a street/strip 1970 Cuda with a 440 Six Pack, and I had a ProCharged LS-powered Foxbody Mustang for a while, but I’ve always considered myself a Dodge guy,” he said. The rare 2008

SRT Challenger is one of just 500 and was purchased new off the lot from Ontario Chrysler. After driving the car bone stock for a year, Walker added a supercharger and nitrous before eventually going all-in with a backhalf and a twin turbo’d Indy motor to capture the title

ho would have known that ten years ago this new heads-up event created under the name of a popular web forum would survive the test of time in an extremely competitive world of Outlaw drag race events? It seems Monty Mikho and his wife Maria did. When the Outlaw Racing world was in a complete upheaval with series and events coming and going, The Yellow Bullet Nationals (YB Nats) held true to itself by keeping this race on a straight and steady course to this “Silver Anniversary.” Labor Day weekend at Cecil County Dragway in Maryland is known

TEN YEARS STRO NG!

for one thing: the biggest show in the Northeast—the YB Nats—and the internet was on fire months in advance with exciting match/grudge race callouts for Friday night by some of the biggest names in the sport. This year it truly was a gorgeous weekend for the 400+ racers that attended and of course the fans who packed the house and everywhere on the track. Trailers began parking as early as Tuesday and Wednesday for early testing on Thursday and Friday. Last year we reported the massive controversy surrounding tires (radials vs. slicks), however for 2019, it seemed the focus was on simply calling out the best in each

class and leaving it all on the table. When you have champions such as Jim Halsey, Jay Cox, Chuck Ulsch, Steve King, Brian Chin, Nick Schroeder, and more chatting it up on the net for match racing during qualifying, it sets the stage for an amazing event before the gates even open. Pro Modified, Outlaw 10.5, X275, Ultra275, Warriors Outlaw Racing Team, Top Sportsman, 8.50 Index, 10.00 Index, and dial-in classes with Pro Dial and Pro Street were on the menu for the weekend. All classes were filled and easily set large ladders for eliminations. The participation in this event is massive and extremely

PRO MOD 1: Just months ago, this side of the Hard Racing Team’s efforts driven by Tyler Hard wasn’t even completed. The Camaro was getting refitted for an F140 ProCharger and bolted to the brand-new Hemi. It all paid off, as Tyler has been doing nothing but winning and setting records, especially with the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association running 5.68 in the quarter-mile!

tight with no one really running away in any of the classes, parity is truly on point here.

PRO MOD

The list of Pro Modified attendees this weekend was impressive with the mixture of massive cubic inches upwards of 950+ sprayed with nitrous oxide in several stages, Roots superchargers, the “Outlaw” screwcharger and new to this class—ProCharger combinations—all on big tires.

90

2: The second half of “Hard Racing” is Kevin McCurdy in an almost identical car to Tyler’s as it underwent the same ProCharger/Hemi upgrade. Kevin has been a champion of many races as well as a Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association Champion, and Yellow Bullet Nationals champ the first year Pro Mods were added. It was finished the week of the YB Nats allowing only for a few test passes.

3 3: Your number two qualifier Jim Halsey at his own track is always deadly quick and also runs in the PDRA series. He is a past points champion in that series and is currently leading the points for 2020.

4: One of the meanest Mustangs on the planet is Anthony DiSomma’s “Desert Demons” Racing ’67 Mustang with DiSomma Racing Engines Hemi power and two turbos blowing through it. The car destroyed the MPH record on the back tires, 216 and 215 mph on each run respectively.

4 Some of the match races took place in the Friday night session of qualifying and into Saturday for even more side action. Steve King and Chuck Ulsch would pair up, but Ulsch would red-light -.003 3.76 and King would haze the tires in the Pilot Racing “Savage” screwcharged Camaro. Both wanted a “doover” the next day with

Ulsch coming out on top. Jim Halsey in his Fulton nitrous powered “Shark” Camaro and Jay Cox with his nitrous-powered “Pumpkin” Camaro would come to the line twice. When all was said and done, Cox’s 3.632 @ 208 would take the track record away from Cecil County Dragway track owner Jim Halsey,

5 & 6: Pretty much known all over the country as one of the baddest nitrous Pro Mods, Jay Cox and the “Pumpkin” set a record of 3.62 at YB Nats while qualifying. My friends, that is quick! 2019 YB NATS McCurdy and Tyler Hard, both out of “Hard Racing,” rose to the finals. Team “Hard Racing’s” Camaros were recently refitted with the Noonan Race Engineering Hemi’s and the F-3X-140 ProCharger with very little time on both cars and literally no real time in the eighth arena as they usually run the Northeast Outlaw Pro mod Association Series which is exclusively a quarter-mile organization. As a matter of fact, McCurdy basically took his first test passes on the new combination at YB Nats. Head tuner and magician with a race car Patrick Barnhill tuned both cars from the middle of the ladder to the finals, keeping them on the track and winning rounds. The cars sound vicious with the new combination. McCurdy’s 4.018 @ 198 was not enough as he lit the tires up mid track and Hard’s 3.74 @ 204 mph would capture the championship title and pick up the $20,000 for the win.

OUTLAW 10.5

8 8: Certainly a favorite to take this whole deal was Mo Hall. He’s been on a mission all year with the HFR Fabrication Corvette dropping stellar ETs and wins all over. Mo did take the win in the very competitive Outlaw 10.5 class. This Vette is wicked!

november 2019 | RPM Magazine

OUTLAW 10.5

Outlaw 10.5 has always been one of Monty’s pet classes. Very vocal about how things were going in the class, it seems Monty—as with most of the racers—has calmed the rivalry between the two types of tires used. Most have switched to the 315 radial just because they have proven to be quicker over the

original 10.5W slick. Mo Hall’s 3.825 @ 194 mph led the pack in his sleek HFR Fabrication Vette powered by a nitroused mill. Steve Woolly went 3.865 @ 205 in his sinister black box Nova filled with twin turbo power and sat in the number two spot. Young Blake Copson (last year’s YB Nat’s Champion) threw down a strong 3.884 @ 184 mph in his

gorgeous twin turbo Hemi-powered Vette out of Gary Naughton Race Cars. Fans were looking for Blake to be the favorite again this year. New York’s Brian Chin went 3.917 @ 196 mph to qualify fourth. He’s making big strides in his nitrous ’69 Camaro and fans love this car for its wild flaming action and wheelstanding antics.

9 9 & 10: Brian Chin is a young guy taking on the big guns with his “Juice” Camaro and has developed a rock-star-like following in the heads-up drag race scene. Expect big smoky burnouts followed by plumes of nitrous and lots of flames on his runs, and maybe a few big wheelies too! Here, Ashley Marie puts him in the beams after the purge. Brian ran his personal best of 3.91 on this pass and it was a special “memorial” for an avid race fan named Patty Patterson who was also an EMT for Maple Grove Raceway. Brian had the chance to meet the family before the pass.

11: Steve Woolley has really made big strides with this sinister looking twin turbo Nova. He met with disaster on his way to the runner up spot when the Nova began lifting the tires mid track and the car took flight. Steve recovered back on four wheels, but the car sustained damage.

12 12: What’s not to love about the ’67 Mustang of Frank Pompilio? It was just renovated with the sleek new front end by Bruce Mullins (it looks amazing in person) to help cut through the air on the many three-second, 200+MPH eighth-mile passes. Frank is out of Canada—he and his team make this trek each year to Rising Sun, Maryland.

Finishing the top five was Canada’s Frank Pompilio with 3.926 @ 198 mph in his newly refitted twin turbo ’67 Mustang. The whole front end was replaced to make it sleeker for those 200 mph blasts.

29 cars in all were on hand to try and get into the 16-car field. Four of the top five remained for the semifinals, with Brian Chin losing in the first round. Blake Copson’s 3.882 @ 192 would fall in a wildly

close race against Steve Woolley’s 3.880 @ 188. With nearly identical reaction times, the margin of victory (MOV) on this race was .003! Frank Pompilio would also lose his bid for a final round

appearance against Mo Hall. The final was set in the late evening, the track was on kill and the night air was thick with horsepower. Hall was out late but as Woolley headed to the 330ft mark the car began to get out of shape and was lifted off the track wildly spinning and ending up on all four tires as Mo Hall ran through with a 3.807 @ 194mph to score another big Yellow Bullet Nationals Championship in Outlaw 10.5.

13: A thing of beauty is what Tim Essick’s 2018 Mustang is. Essick built this car from the frame up himself and this also includes the Alan Johnson Performance Engineering 481X motor with an F136 ProCharger mounted to it that sounds obscene under power. The Mustang and Tim are one of the few teams running the original 10.5W tires. Tim, along with good friend Dan Whetstine, keep this one of the quickest in the class and the car is a showstopper, to boot.

X275

X275 Drag Radial is by far one of the most popular and longest lasting of the radial classes. With 29 cars in contention for the top spot, Charles Hull and his Mustang would take number one spot with 4.33 @ 166 mph. Fletcher Cox,

star defensive end of the 2018 Philadelphia Eagle Super Bowl Championship Team brought his “Gold Dust” Mustang to capture the number two spot with Shawn Ayers 4.35 @ 163 at the wheel of this beast. Rich Bruder took the third spot with his Mustang ripping

off a strong 4.395 @ 170. Dan Kinzie in the ProCharged ’67 Nova placed fourth with 4.36 @ 167. Many times over champion and virtual hitman of X275 Ron Rhodes (who also seen in the pages of RPM Magazine) was off his normal pace in the fifth spot with

16: Charles Hull has been working overtime dominating a lot of the X275 races with his single turbo 1992 KBX / Fueltech-powered Mustang. Hull kept his sights on the finals where he took Rich Bruder out posting times in the 4.37 range to progress through the rounds.

2019 YB NATS 17

17: How cool is to have #91 Fletcher Cox, one of the best defensive ends in football from last year’s Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl, team getting you prepared for your pass? Shawn Ayers knows. Cox owns “Goldust” and crew chiefs as Shawn drives this 471ci ProCharger F1X-12R DiSomma Racing Engines motor tuned by Nick and Rich Bruder. Shawn made his rounds count with consistent 4.30s.

18

18: One of the most versatile teams in X275 is Bruder Brothers Racing. The Atomizer Racing Injectors, Racecraft Inc, ProCharger-equipped DiSomma Racing Engines Mustang just keeps finding ways to win. This year they would have to settle as runner-up to winner Charles Hull as they couldn’t repair damage to the engine from the previous round in the short turnaround of the fast-paced Yellow Bullet Nationals finals.

ULTRA275

19: Your number one qualifier Steve Beaston, Jr. set a new record for Ultra 275 this weekend, being the first into the 4.50s with a 4.59. Steve is a regular at Cecil County and this car is not only quick, it’s a showstopper. The gorgeous orange paint sets off the nitrous injected motor’s power as it makes trips down the eighth-mile.

20 20: It’s been a long time coming for John Albrecht Jr. to grab a hold of the winner’s trophy. The Thriftway Auto Body / S-K Speed Equipment Monte Carlo finally settled in and went the rounds it was built for with solid 4.60s passes. John’s brother Joe played a huge role in this win.

the BES-powered Induction Solutions nitrous sprayed Calvert Racing Cal Tracs/leaf springequipped Camaro running 4.38 @ 163. The events leading up to this final were as

follows: Ron Rhodes failed to start against Hull in the semifinals and Rich Bruder did beat Shawn Ayers in “Gold Dust.” However, Bruder was smoking heavily after that pass leaving Hull

taking a single pass for the championship title in Yellow Bullet Nationals X275.

ULTRA 275

Ultra 275 has become another amazing class for

those who love the radial world drag racing, and it has become much quicker than what was originally planned when rules were written. Steve Beaston, Jr. would find himself in the top

spot after becoming the first to the 4.50s, putting down a 4.591 @ 153 mph. Ronny Rhodes, hot on the 4.50 trail, was so close himself in the number two spot with 4.603 @ 152, while Rodney

Ragen with 4.638 @ 155, Joel Greathouse 4.661 @ 157, and John Albrecht, Jr. 4.665 @ 151 would follow respectively. Ultra 275 was a HUGE class this year. The cars were great

22: What a great weekend for the team of James and Crystal Smith and the wild nitrous Mustang from JSC Fabrication, their own business. and all were very tightly bunched in the ET department. Almost everyone who was expected to advance did so for the most part. Young but expertly trained in the art of winning, Ronny Rhodes in his Induction Solutions-sprayed Cal Track leaf spring 1968 Camaro would square off against the tough and well-seasoned John Albrecht, Jr., also spraying his deep maroon 1985 Monte Carlo Super Sport. Albrecht’s 5.804 @ 147 would take the win and Ronny Rhodes would have to settle for a tire spinning runner-up loss.

WARRIORS

Once again, the Warriors Racing Team of Larry and Diana Mack returned for another show-stopping appearance with wild cars and wild action that is just plain fun to watch. Larry tries to keep everyone near or around competitive ETs and it’s working out well as he will also indulge in a second field if needed. After three sessions, James Smith’s 4.368 @ 166 mph in his absolutely gorgeous flamed nitrous JSC Fabrications Mustang sat in the number one spot. Vet-

eran racer Scott Bitzer’s 4.403 @ 168 in the stunning Malibu followed while Ralph Hardesty was batting in the third spot with 4.405 @ 154. This car is even more spectacular today with the perfect black panels and show stopping ProCharger powered big block Chevy. James Smith found his way to the finals via four rounds of highly competitive racing to meet one of the newest members, Will Fair, in the twin turbo BBC powered 2001 Camaro on the opposite side of the ladder. Buser was off his pace of 4.56 ETs in the semifinals when he fell to runner up Will Fair. 25: Though in the second ladder of the Warriors, it’s still a huge compliment to the team of Billy and Donna Ahlas and the flamed, ProCharged Nova out of Maryland to move all the way up to the runner up spot against winner James Houston.

8.50 INDEX

It never fails that one of the biggest classes at the YB Nats is the 8.50 Index. A total of 55 rides of all kinds came to race on an index system: get as close to the index (8.50) without going quicker but also beating your opponent to the finish line on a heads-up tree. This is not bracket racing, my friends, this is a hybrid heads-up competition class on an index in the quarter-mile. Competition in qualifying was tight as the first 11 cars were in the 8.500 to 8.509 and top speed of 170 MPH. Brian Marko’s 8.5000 in his sinister and immaculate ’71 Nova was the best of the day to sit in the top spot. A 32 car field was built, and ladder laid out with Jake Schroeder’s 8.544 on the bump spot in his beautiful ’85 Camaro.

26 27: From its early days on the street, Mike Clayboss “Buwack” has decided to bring his Buick Skylark to where it belongs, wowing fans in the 8.50 Index with great wheels-up action from the Induction Solutions-sprayed BBC under the evil black body panels.

8.50 INDEX

28: For most of my career with RPM Magazine, Billy Verzilli has been in my lens and articles. Bill and his dad have been with the 8.50 Index since its inception. Like his dad, Billy has grown into a fantastic driver —but now in his own new Camaro with a nitroused Henry Jackson BBC for power.

28

26: Brian Marko hit the index right on the head, putting an 8.5000 on the boards and did well in this huge class. This exceptionally clean and fast Nova is exciting to watch with nice wheels-up launches.

27

29: Index champion Dan Purdy worked hard to get to the finals with expert driving and quick reactions, the sleek Camaro was truly hard to beat with a $10,000 prize up for grabs.

2019 YB NATS With a grueling set of rounds commencing on Sunday to so many upsets and outstanding driving, this really was one of the best running classes of the weekend. The road to the finals was hard for both sides of the ladder, where Dan Purdy in his ultra-clean 632 ci 2002 Camaro on nitrous would meet up with Michael Daniele in a wheelstanding 2004 Mustang powered by a 598 ci on spray. Purdy would take the win and the massive $10,000 payout as the local Street Car Shootout racer laid down a stellar .022 reaction time and 8.528 @ 158 mph in the quarter over Daniele’s losing .047rt, 8.582 @ 139. Monty and Maria spent most of the weekend working the event and entertaining fans along with their steadfast team of David Mikho, Seth Cohen, Patty Comparato DeMichele, and Robert Norbeck—all who play a HUGE role in the weekend events especially Monty and Maria’s cherished kid’s games for prizes. No child ever leaves the Yellow Bullet Nationals without a great prize and some good old-fashioned fun when this team gets their game on! I firmly believe the race comes second to these Sunday morning games. Another Yellow Bullet Nationals hits the history books and once again….we can’t wait until 2020, so let the games begin!

30 30: Jim Dayotas is like gold for the fans who love wheelstanding Mopars filled with 600 cubes of Mopar power. This car captures cheers on each pass, it’s brutally strong off the launch and a tough car to chase down in the 8.50s.

31 & 32: It’s been a very long summer for most racers in Top Sportsman, especially the number one qualifier Erica Coleman. She’s been lighting up the track with consistent three-second passes, and this time it was a 3.929 @ 193 to earn the top spot in the beautiful light yellow 908 ci nitrous Camaro, once the record setting Pro Mod of Jim Halsey as the first in the five-second zone. Mike Newman in the deep maroon 2003 Chevy S10 took the win .011 - 4.869 @ 140.33 over Josh Eastburn’s 2012 Camaro 4.483 @ 159.89

10.0 INDEX

34

35: Everybody loves sleepers—especially the 10-second kind—busting off wheelsup launches at will yet looking totally streetable, this class is it. Chris Yeznach in his wicked B5 blue ’67 Plymouth Barracuda would come from the middle of the ladder and take on Doug Frisch also from the middle of the ladder a local racer who worked his ’67 Chevy Nova into the finals. Frisch couldn’t keep it from breaking out 9.992 @ 132 after a poor 0.107 reaction time made him play catch up as Yeznach balanced the tires high in the air almost out to the 60-foot mark like he’d been doing on every pass (the crowd loves a wheelstanding Mopar) and took the win easily with a solid 0.033 reaction time and deadly 10.044 @ 131.

33 & 34: We finish off this with the very popular 10.00 Index. This is a very exciting class with a diverse selection of bodies and powerplants…and lots of action. A 32-car ladder was formed with Kevin Spencer in his incredibly clean ’72 Nova leading the pack as the number one qualifier 10.000 followed by Nikki Garrano 10.004 in the number two spot, that’s how close again the action is.

lear blue skies and warm temps helped make the 12th Annual DaSilva Racing Toronto Sick Kids Hospital fundraiser another great success!

Joe DaSilva was born in an area of Africa that was war-torn and his parents knew that North America would provide for a better and safer future for the family—so the DaSilvas started a new

life in Ontario, Canada and never looked back. DaSilva started off racing brackets at the local dragstrips and won many races as he cut his teeth in drag racing. By 1989, he would progress

to heads-up and street style racing and started competing in series and venues throughout the U.S. in his 1986 Mustang LX that he still owns today. During this time, DaSilva started his own

FUND RAISER performance shop and dedicated most of his efforts toward Ford-powered street and race cars. As he continued to compete and reach the top level in Ford racing, he earned numerous event

It is one of five Aussie twodoor Falcons known to exist in Canada. Inspired by Mad Max Film series it was painstakingly restored to movie car specs, including the faux “on/off” blower.

wins at Fun Ford, NMRA, World Ford Challenge events, and an NMRA 2000 World Championship in his 1998 Mustang twin turbo with Wolfe Racecraft support. With the success of his racing and business, DaSilva Racing, Joe wanted to give back to the community and the idea of the Sick Kids Car Show Fundraiser was born. “This is our 12th year doing the show and this year we raised $90,000,” DaSilva said following this year’s event. MAG two thumbs up for Joe and his team! $90,000 is an amazing success (in 2018 the show raised $80,000), not to mention that the money is going to such a worthy cause. With over 700 cars and thousands of people, including local politicians, in attendance Joe has collected an amazing volunteer staff to help with everything from directing traffic, running dyno tests and selling 50/50 tickets along with fielding questions in the shop and store.

Sick Kids patients were judges of participants’ cars, and crystal trophies were handed out to smiling winners in more than a dozen categories like “Over the Top” and “Best Paint.” With amazing weather and a huge selection of most anything you can imagine in the world of automobile performance, it truly is a remarkable event to add to your calendar for next year.
