Over the last year, it has been a joy to witness the enthusiasm and excitement generated from the new and engaging spaces brought to fruition through the Riverside Cornerstone Campaign.
To see the many ways the new Mary Lou Davis Family Life Center, Rice Sports Zone, and Harden Family Gate and Courtyard have transformed our campus and enriched the student experience is a reminder of the RPDS spirit and our collective devotion to the School’s mission. The success of the Riverside Cornerstone Campaign will have a lasting impact on the school and programs and will directly influence our work to positively shape the hearts and minds of our students. I remain truly grateful to the RPDS Board of Trustees, the Cornerstone Steering and Campus Development Committees, and the many members of the RPDS community including our current families, alumni, grandparents, and faculty and staff for helping bring these projects to life. The realization of this vision was a true community effort and a reflection of the love we have for Riverside.

Ben Ketchum Head of School
It is true that the spirit and ethos of RPDS is shaped by the amazing individuals who have collectively contributed to its past and present. In this year’s Riverside Review we pause to celebrate the life and legacy of Mrs. Helen Lane who fostered community through the distinct and beloved landmark on Riverside’s campus, the Lane House. Known affectionately by our students as the “yellow house”, this iconic and historic home serves as Riverside’s front door and remains a warm and inviting starting point for each family’s RPDS journey.
Throughout the pages of this publication you will find highlights of our students’ year and the many ways they have immersed themselves in academics, athletics, and the arts. You will experience the dedication and creativity of our teachers who teach from the heart and provide learning opportunities that challenge students to grow as learners and become their best selves. Recognizing those who have benefited from the gift of an RPDS education, we are excited to share updates from RPDS Alumni. Our alumni stories reflect the foundations established during their time at Riverside: a love of learning; the pursuit of excellence; and an appreciation of faith, family, and community.
We also pay tribute to members of our outstanding faculty and staff who have reached treasured RPDS milestones, including retirements, notable years of service, and the acclaimed H.D. Bo Cotton Award. At the same time, we look to the future by welcoming Tavia Mullen, Stephanie Milne, Jamie Roberts, and Karen Worsham into new and expanded leadership roles. Their experience, knowledge, and keen understanding of the RPDS mission and vision will be meaningful as we continue to implement strategic initiatives.
It is clear that Riverside is a special place where childhood is celebrated and the entire school community works collectively to enrich our students. Thank you for your generosity, support, and investment in our mission. I am truly grateful for the RPDS community and for the transformative educational experiences we provide our children, faculty, and families.
Sincerely,

Head of School
As the outgoing Board chair, I reflect on the experience and the teachers, administrators, volunteers, and parents that work in concert to make RPDS a special place. I have seen the effort, care, and love that is poured into the school and the nurturing culture surrounding our school.
This year, we celebrated the opening of the Mary Lou Davis Family Life Center and Rice Sports Complex. There is no doubt the construction impacted activities, but it did not diminish the RPDS experience. The ribbon cutting was a momentous occasion for both RPDS and Riverside Presbyterian Church, made possible by the tireless efforts of the fundraising and planning committees, volunteers, and the generosity of the community. We are grateful to all who helped bring this vision to life.
During construction, we also upgraded our security and fully enclosed the perimeter of the property. I want to thank the Riverside Park United Methodist Church and Riverside Park Apartments for their continued support of the safety of our children and campus.
As we conclude these major construction projects, the Board remains focused on continued investment in the school. Our successful fundraising efforts supported us in these investments and were achieved through the generosity of those who donated to the RPDS Fund.
The school is in a healthy position and prepared to successfully navigate the road ahead. Thank you to my fellow trustees for their dedication toward the continued success and growth of the school. I welcome Katie Fackler as the new Chair of the Board.

I am confident Katie will lead the Board with integrity, wisdom, and commitment to our mission. Thank you for your trust and support; it has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the President of the Board of Trustees.
Sincerely,

Congratulations to Riverside’s 2025 Bo Cotton Award recipient, Amanda Lucas!

Over the summer, the RPDS 6th Grade teaching team engaged in collaborative professional development by attending PBL World, an immersive conference hosted by PBLWorks. Together, they explored innovative strategies in project-based learning, deepening their shared understanding of how to create meaningful, student-centered learning experiences. This experience not only strengthened their instructional practices but also reinforced their commitment to fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in every RPDS classroom.
By participating as a team, the 6th Grade faculty had the opportunity to reflect, plan, and align their approaches to project-based learning. This collective experience ensures a consistent, enriching educational journey for RPDS students, as teachers bring back fresh ideas and shared goals to the classroom community.

This past fall, Riverside’s 1st and 2nd Grade teachers, along with select members of the Academic Support Team, engaged in an enriching professional development session led by Sarah Schaffer, focused on the (Math) odology framework and Think! Mathematics. The afternoon offered a deep dive into how to structure meaningful, engaging math instruction that meets the developmental needs of young learners.
Prior to the session, our educators identified areas they were most interested in exploring. In response, Sarah tailored the afternoon to emphasize how best to plan and organize instructional time for maximum impact. A key takeaway was the importance of launching each lesson with an “Anchor Task”—a hands-on thinking activity that gets students mentally engaged right from the start. These whiteboard-based warm-ups not only activate prior knowledge but also build number sense, offering students time to independently consider their approach before sharing with the class. Rather than emphasizing correct answers, students are encouraged to explain how they think—through counting, decomposing numbers, and reasoning.
The session also highlighted the value of journaling and group whiteboarding as strategies to support students in articulating their mathematical thinking. By saying, drawing, and writing their ideas, students deepen their understanding and make their thinking visible.

Following daily guided instruction, research supports incorporating games to reinforce the lesson’s “big idea.” These games provide opportunities for students to practice skills while developing math fact fluency—achieving efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy. Our teachers enjoyed trying out several of the games Sarah introduced, many of which can be adapted for more advanced concepts.

Sarah emphasized the importance of occasionally setting aside time to focus more deeply on concepts through dedicated fluency days. These special sessions include journaling, games, and complex brainteasers designed to build confidence and promote flexible problem-solving skills.
Our faculty left the workshop energized and inspired, equipped with strategies they could implement immediately in their classrooms. Most importantly, they felt empowered to continue refining their instruction to nurture curious, capable, and confident young mathematicians.

Faith Donnelly PreK 4 Teacher
We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Kristi Aponte back to Riverside as our new Curriculum Coordinator for the 2025–2026 school year. A beloved former faculty member at RPDS, Dr. Aponte brings a rich background in both early childhood and elementary education, along with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Florida. Her recent work designing and teaching graduate-level courses at the University of North Florida has expanded her expertise in curriculum, instructional planning, and social-emotional learning. With her strong academic foundation, deep roots in the Riverside community, and unwavering commitment to educational excellence, Dr. Aponte is a wonderful addition to our leadership team. In addition to her new role on Riverside’s leadership team, Dr. Aponte is also thrilled to be starting her first school year as an RPDS parent as her daughter enters PreK 3.
We are delighted to welcome Faith Donnelly to the PreK 4 team as a lead teacher. A proud RPDS alumna from the Class of 1992, former faculty member, long-time substitute, and current RPDS parent, Mrs. Donnelly brings a strong connection to our community alongside a wealth of professional experience. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Auburn University, a Master of Education in Elementary Education from the University of North Florida, and a current Florida Professional Educator Certificate (K–6) with an endorsement in Exceptional Student Education. With more than a decade of teaching experience, Mrs. Donnelly is known for her creative, student-centered instruction and her thoughtful approach to nurturing young learners.

If you have entered the RPDS campus since 1999, you have undoubtedly driven by, parked next to, or strolled inside The Lane House. This charming and cheerful yellow house has stood as a pinnacle of Riverside’s campus for over 25 years. And although you might be familiar with this quintessential Queen Anne Victorian home, you may not know that it became a beloved landmark of our school thanks to the love, generosity, and devotion of Mrs. Helen Lane.
The house was originally built on Oak Street around 1893 for a couple who enjoyed it as their family home until 1969. Riverside Presbyterian Church purchased the home but quickly realized they needed the space to grow their campus and could not keep the house. In lieu of demolition, RPC offered the home to Mrs. Helen Lane. Always on the go, Mrs. Lane was faced with the dilemma of being in Europe the month the house needed to be moved and was unsure where to place it. Thankfully, she found a 50-foot lot around the corner on Post Street between Riverside Avenue and Five Points. While she was in Paris, Helen’s mother and relatives oversaw the move. Lane once recounted receiving a comical telegram from her mother while overseas that read: “I do hope I got it in the right place, dear.”
Upon her return to the States, Mrs. Lane devoted herself to restoring the house, acknowledging the significance of preserving Queen Anne Victorian architecture and history, especially since many of Jacksonville’s homes from that era were destroyed during the Great Fire of 1901. Lane said she was glad the building could be preserved because it represents a time when Jacksonville was beginning to thrive and has the perfect combination of gingerbread trim and good heart pine. Once restoration work was completed, five shops moved into the house, including a tea room and The Shop for Pappagallo on the first floor, an antique store and beauty salon on the second, and artist Christine Schmidt in the tower. In December of 1985, the Creole Queen restaurant took over the house and remained open for eight years. In 1994, Bowyer’s Restaurant moved in, and in 1996, A Tasteful Cafe
was the final restaurant to occupy the house. Following its run as a restaurant, Mrs. Lane decided at the end of 1998 to donate the house to Riverside Presbyterian Day School. The following year, members of the RPDS community watched as the historic home was rotated 90 degrees and slowly moved across what is now the Rice Sports Zone to the spot it resides today on Riverside Park Place. Helen Lane once shared, “I couldn’t think of a finer place for that house to be than in a school surrounding. I know the little house is very happy, and the rescuer is, too.” Once settled in its new location, the School officially renamed the Queen Anne Victorian The Lane House in honor of the great generosity, kindness, and heart of Helen Lane. For the last 26 years, The Lane House has served as the home for Riverside’s administrative staff and Admissions Office. With its historic charm, The Lane House has been a warm and inviting front door for hundreds of families to walk through as they embark on their educational journey at RPDS.

In 2021, preservation work was done to ensure The Lane House continues to serve and benefit its community for many generations—much like the woman who so beautifully restored it.
Helen Spratt Murchison Lane passed away this past May, just 14 days shy of her 101st birthday. Helen moved from Boston to Jacksonville when she was just two months old and remained a devoted Jacksonville resident for the rest of her life. Truly in love with her city, Helen, along with her husband Ed, actively supported the Jacksonville community throughout her life. She was a lifetime member of the Garden Club of Jacksonville and a founding member of the Acacia Garden Circle, where she served as president three times and perennial trip chairman. With Ann Baker and Jackie Holmes, she co-founded the Arts Assembly, now the Cultural Council of Jacksonville. She was also a member of the Jacksonville Junior League, serving as president in 1959. In addition, she was a founding member of the Women’s Giving Alliance and a member of the Colonial Dames.
Helen served on the boards of trustees for the Jacksonville Symphony, the River City Band, the Community Foundation, Sweet Briar College, Bartram School, the
Bolles School, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, the Cummer Gallery of Art and Gardens, and the Jacksonville Historical Society.
Mrs. Lane’s community and civic service was appreciated and often publicly recognized. She was named Outstanding Alumnus of both the Bolles School and Sweet Briar College. She received the Tillie Fowler Award from the Jacksonville Junior League and the Arnolta Johnson “Mama” Williams Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florida Times-Union EVE Awards ceremony. Together with her husband Ed, she was honored with the Outstanding Philanthropist Award from the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
RPDS honors and celebrates the extraordinary legacy of Helen Lane and knows that her spirit of generosity, joy, and love will continue to permeate The Lane House and the entire school campus. At Riverside, many say it’s the heart that makes this community so special—and in The Lane House, it is the heart and love of Mrs. Lane that will continue to be reflected for years to come.

This past fall, Riverside was thrilled to welcome back one of its own, Frannie Borghese, as part of her Wofford College education internship. Frannie, a proud RPDS alumna, spent several weeks supporting learning and growth in Mrs. Goldfield’s 1st Grade classroom—and left a lasting impression on students and faculty alike.
“Frannie immediately became devoted to our Ram Family by authentically stepping in to help students stretch their minds and hearts,” Mrs. Goldfield shared. “She began each day with a warm smile and offered affirmations to all our friends throughout our day.”
For Frannie, the feeling was mutual. Reflecting on her time at RPDS, she said, “I had such an amazing time teaching in Ms. Goldfield’s 1st Grade class. The students, teachers, and staff were so warm, friendly, and welcoming—I truly felt like part of the RPDS family from day one. This experience really confirmed that teaching is exactly what I want to do after I graduate. Who knows—maybe one day I’ll be back at RPDS with a class of my own!”
We are proud to see our alumni return to Riverside, not only to reconnect with their roots, but to shape the future. Frannie’s passion, dedication, and joy were a gift to our community, and we can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next.

4,000 Page Club
This year in the Library, 4th and 5th Grade students set personalized reading goals centered around 4,000 pages, with adjustments made as needed. The focus was on free, voluntary reading with no tests, just choice and honesty in tracking progress. All 4th Grade students met their goals, many surpassing them, and most 5th Grade students did, as well. In May, we celebrated with a pizza lunch and handed out 4,000 Page Club patch tags, encouraging every Ram to be a reader!
Book Character Parade
In March, our students celebrated the end of the Scholastic Book Fair with a Book Character Parade. Students in PreK 3 through 6th Grade brought their favorite stories to life and celebrated their love of reading in a creative and spirited fashion.

Chris Barton, author of a wide range of both nonfiction and fiction books for children, was our Author-in-Residence in January. During his visit, Chris entertained and informed our students in Kindergarten through 6th Grade. Our students were surprised to learn that it sometimes takes years for an idea to end up as a published book. Persistence—something we highly value here at RPDS — is an absolute necessity for an author and a trait exemplified by Chris in his work and talk. Of particular interest to our students is that Chris, in his work as a biographer, has written about Jacksonville native, pilot, and civil rights leader Alton Yates. Learning about Mr. Yates and his work to overturn unfair laws in Jacksonville brought a new perspective to our students and a renewed determination to be inclusive and fair. Students were amazed to see photos of Chris with Mr. and Mrs. Yates in their home, taken just the day before his visit to RPDS. Students who purchased books by Mr. Barton were able to have their books autographed—always a fun and inspiring treat!

Matthew Cordell
On November 10, 2025, we are looking forward to our Author-in-Residence for the coming year, 2018 Caldecott Award-winning illustrator and author Matthew Cordell. It has been a few years since we have had someone who is an accomplished illustrator at such a high level, and it will be exciting to learn about his techniques and compare his process with illustration to what our students have already learned about the writing process, especially since Mr. Cordell sometimes does both.

Mary Poppins Jr.
Our 5th and 6th Grade students delighted audiences with their performance of Mary Poppins Jr., a magical musical based on P.L. Travers’s stories and the beloved classic Disney film. Through lively songs, spirited performances, and creative staging, students told the story of the Banks family. The production showcased our students’ talent, teamwork, and love of performing —to put it simply, the show was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Our Musical World
This year’s 1st and 2nd Grade production, Our Musical World, took students and audiences on a joyful journey around the globe to explore the universal power of music. Through vibrant songs, energetic dances, and traditional attire representing their own cultural heritage, students celebrated the rich diversity of global musical traditions. The performance was a colorful and heartfelt reminder of how music connects us all, transcending borders and bringing people together in harmony.

This year’s school-wide production of Willy Wonka Jr. featured 125 students from Kindergarten through 6th Grade, who came together to bring Roald Dahl’s classic story to life with imagination and heart. From the curious journey of Charlie Bucket to the whimsical world of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, the performance dazzled with lively songs, colorful costumes, and spirited choreography. The show was a true celebration of creativity and collaboration, showcasing the talent and enthusiasm of students across all grade levels and leaving audiences feeling like they were the ones who got the golden ticket!

The 2024–2025 school year was an incredible one for RPDS Athletics! Our student athletes showed grit, teamwork, and sportsmanship across all four sports—Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Flag Football, and Volleyball—with each team earning a spot in their respective Championship games.
We’re thrilled to share that our Boys and Girls Basketball teams both brought home Championship titles in the Fall of 2024, while our Flag Football teams followed suit with a Championship win in the Spring of 2025.
This year also saw outstanding student participation from our 5th and 6th graders. RPDS proudly fielded three Boys Basketball teams, two Girls Basketball teams, three Flag Football teams, and four Volleyball teams. Each athlete brought energy, enthusiasm, and effort to every practice and game. We are incredibly proud of the dedication, sportsmanship, and hard work our student athletes demonstrated all year long. Way to go, Rams!

On Friday, May 23, Riverside Presbyterian Day School proudly celebrated the Class of 2025. Fifty-three students were honored during the graduation ceremony, each receiving his or her certificate and Bible from Head of School Ben Ketchum, Board President William Trice, and Rev. Dr. Brian Lays, Head Pastor of Riverside Presbyterian Church. Congratulations to the Class of 2025 — we are so proud of you!

Jack Haley
The Andrew L. Clarke Music Performance Award is given in honor of long-time RPC organist Andrew Clarke, to cultivate an ongoing excitement for and love of individual music performance at RPDS. The 2025 award was given to 6th Grade student Jack Haley, who demonstrates an accomplished foundation for studying, appreciating, and performing musical compositions through private study and in music classes at RPDS.

Aidan Patel
In 2024 RPDS introduced the R.A.M.S. Award, which stands for Responsible Application of Math and Science. The recipient of the R.A.M.S. Award embodies the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration, intellectual curiosity, and creative expression, setting a standard of excellence for future generations of scholars and innovators. The 2025 R.A.M.S. Award for Responsible Application of Math and Science goes to Aidan Patel.

The Elizabeth Martinson Poetry Award fosters an ongoing love of poetry at RPDS and annually honors a student who has demonstrated an excitement for learning, appreciating, and interpretating poetry during his or her years at RPDS. This year, the award was presented to 6th Grade student Grace Wallace.
Poem by Grace Wallace
I dream of a world where humanity is seen. Where kids can go out in the streets and safely play.
A world where land isn’t stolen and people aren’t so mean. And where people can choose to go or to stay.
I dream of a world where cries don’t fill my people’s sky. And where humanity sees both sides of the story. A place where they don’t have to see their loved ones die. And a dream where their life isn’t so gory.
My dream is something I hope will come. So I refuse to stay silent like an old referee.
Where my people will cheer louder than fans after Freeman’s home run. My dream is of a world where all people are free.

“I Dream a Time”
I dream a time When the lens zooms out When my world becomes bigger Than this small image of now.
I dream a time When what is far comes near When I can see in detail The future that stays unclear.
I dream a time When big worries become small When anxieties that hold My mind in free fall Subside to serenity Like summer does to fall; That my heart could rest My mind could calm With my worries confessed And my heartache gone.
This time I dream of Will it come to pass? If my world were to expand Would my worries seem of such mass? Could Peace’s gentle hand Take a hold on my life And pull me from the quicksand That causes me such strife?
Long-time RPDS Language Arts teacher Ellen Millar was known and respected by her students and colleagues as a professional who expected the best effort that each had to give. She guided her students through the writing process with care and patience and taught them how to write with clarity and expression. This year’s award was presented to 6th Grade student Lanie Crum, whose writing reflects excellence in the elements of written thought and expression.
This time I dream of It will be so My wish, my yearning Into reality it will grow If I water the seed And reap what I sow this time I dream of Will be the life I come to know.

After a successful revival last year, the RPDS Alumni Council was proud to partner once again with Riverside Presbyterian Day School to host the second annual Spaghetti Dinner during Open House. What began as a heartwarming tradition returned even stronger—serving 265 dinners this year, a significant jump from the 169 served in 2024.
With the enthusiastic help of RPDS alumni, former faculty and staff, and current parents, the evening was a tremendous success. The kitchen buzzed with laughter, storytelling, and teamwork as volunteers chopped, stirred, packaged, and served up homemade spaghetti meals to families visiting campus.

Alumni, former faculty, and current parents enjoyed preparing 265 dinners for RPDS families at this year’s Open House Spaghetti Dinner. It’s a true testament to the Riverside Way that so many of us are eager to serve, swap stories, and walk down memory lane while coming together to support our school. It’s always a joy to experience both the deep-rooted commitment to RPDS and the fellowship that surrounds this cherished tradition.
- Sally Smith, ‘89

The RPDS Alumni Council extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this event possible and is already looking forward to doing it all again next year!
Saundra and John Howard began their journey with FotoTechnika in 1981, driven by a shared dream to build something beautiful together. Over the years, their business has become more than just a profession; it has transformed into a meaningful way to preserve memories, including the rich history of Riverside Presbyterian Day School.
As proud RPDS alumni parents and grandparents, the Howards hold deep roots in the RPDS and Riverside Presbyterian Church communities. Their daughter, Sarah Cotchaleovitch (’95), continues this legacy as both a faculty member and an active member of the RPDS Alumni Council.
In the summer of 2024, the Alumni Council launched an ambitious initiative to digitize the RPDS archives, a project the Howards have embraced wholeheartedly to help safeguard the School’s legacy for generations to come.
Reflecting on their RPDS journey, John fondly recalls the encouragement they received from a beloved faculty member and Sunday School teacher. “Sarah’s teacher

recognized her potential and spoke so highly of RPDS,” he shared. “That recommendation helped us make the decision to enroll.”

The foundational skills Sarah gained at RPDS prepared her for future success, both in homeschooling and in her contributions to the family business.
Beyond their work with the archives, the Howard family also supports the Belonging Project and created custom name plates for the 6th Grade Service Luncheon, another example of their behind-the-scenes generosity.
We are deeply thankful to the Howard family for their continued dedication to RPDS. Because of their support, our community’s shared history is not only preserved, it is brought to life for the future.

As the RPDS Class of 2019 embarks on their next thrilling adventure, an unforgettable reunion at Eve Surface’s home on April 6, 2025 brought together a fantastic group of seniors. This gathering was a joyful celebration of lifelong friendships and the wonderful memories that blossomed during their educational journey.
Laughter filled the air as everyone shared stories about their favorite teachers, epic field trips, and the fun games they played in PE. It was heartwarming to see teachers, staff members, and parents join in, making the event feel like a true family reunion. The celebration served as a vibrant reminder of the lasting impact of the RPDS experience and the importance of keeping those connections alive.
The RPDS reunion was a heartfelt tribute to the unbreakable bonds of early friendships and the experiences that shape us. As these graduating seniors prepare to spread their wings, they carry with them the cherished memories of their time at RPDS and the friendships that have stood the test of time.

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, RPDS hosted over 300 grandparents and special friends for our cherished Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day. The event featured inspiring Chapel performances, classroom visits, and a lovely reception in Kissling Hall, celebrating the special relationships that enrich our students’ lives. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for next year’s celebration on Thursday, October 16, 2025!

This year marked the much-anticipated return of the RPDS Fall Festival—and it did not disappoint! Our campus came alive with laughter, lights, and the joyful spirit of community as families gathered for an evening of festive fun and fellowship.
From scaling the rock wall and testing their skills at putt-putt golf to enjoying the always-popular cake walk, students had no shortage of exciting activities. The petting zoo was a favorite among our youngest festival-goers, and a variety of local food trucks kept everyone well-fed and happy.
We are incredibly grateful to the dedicated Fall Festival Committee and the many volunteers who gave their time and energy to bring this beloved tradition back to life. Save the date for this year’s Fall Festival on Friday, November 14th!

The annual Capers Gala transformed into a vibrant celebration of tropical elegance as nearly 300 friends and families of Riverside Presbyterian Day School gathered for Havana Nights at the stunning Timuquana Country Club. Despite the chilly evening outside, the ballroom radiated warmth with lively decor that evoked the essence of balmy breezes and rich colors, setting the perfect tone for a night of joy and festivity. The evening featured a deliciously themed dinner, an exciting silent auction with incredible items and experiences up for bid, and unforgettable music from the River Town Band that had everyone on their feet, dancing the night away. Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of our RPDS community, Capers continues to be a shining example of what we can accomplish together, directly enhancing our programs, enriching our campus, and strengthening every student’s experience.

On Saturday, April 26, RPDS hosted the third annual Run Riverside, a lively event featuring a 5K, the “funnest” Fun Run ever, and a vibrant Finish Line Festival, with nearly 900 participants from RPDS and the greater Jacksonville community. The event was a resounding success, celebrating health, connection, and school spirit. This growing tradition was supported by families, friends, business partners, and vendors, with special thanks to Title Sponsor Daily’s and event co-chairs Nadya Chandler and Jenna Gatlin. We also express our heartfelt gratitude to the entire Run Riverside committee and volunteer team for their enthusiasm and commitment in making the day possible. Thanks to everyone who ran, walked, cheered, and celebrated with us! We are already excited for next year’s Run Riverside which will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

RPDS students wrapped up the year with a lively “School’s Out for Summer!” celebration, featuring games, water play, a Silent Disco, and a giant inflatable obstacle course. Friendly competition in Camp Games and Bingo added to the fun, while students enjoyed ice cream, pizza, and watermelon. The event was a joyful send-off into summer, filled with community, laughter, and sweet memories.

On a joyful and sunny morning, the sound of cheers and celebration filled the air as members of Riverside Presbyterian Day School and Riverside Presbyterian Church gathered to commemorate a milestone years in the making: the official ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new Mary Lou Davis Family Life Center.
The event, held on March 4, 2025, brought together school families, church members, staff, students, and community leaders for a moment of shared gratitude and excitement. The Family Life Center represents more than just a new building—it is a testament to a shared vision for ministry, education, fellowship, and growth.
Following a heartfelt introduction by Ben Ketchum, the Head of School at RPDS, the ceremony included inspiring
speeches from School and Church leaders. The speakers shared insights on the dedication, prayers, and generosity that transformed the vision into reality, while also expressing optimism about the myriad ways this new space will enhance lives for future generations.
“This space has come into being because many folks from RPC and RPDS had a vision, were willing to work toward that vision, and entrusted that vision to God,” said the Rev. Dr. Brian Lays, Head Pastor of RPC. “We can work as hard as we want toward something WE want, but in the end, God is the one who prospers the work of our hands. God is the one who makes possible the generosity, the shared partnership, and the patient endurance required to see a project like this through to the end.”

The ceremonial ribbon was held by members of the Cornerstone Steering Committee and was cut by Campaign Co-Chairs Jed Davis and Karla Newton.
Steering Committee Co-Chair, Karla Newton, said “The ribbon cutting marked a meaningful milestone for Riverside Presbyterian Day School and Church. The Mary Lou Davis Family Life Center and enhanced Rice Sports Zone have transformed our campus, providing vibrant spaces for students and the broader Jacksonville community. From Physical Educaiton classes to interscholastic games and the Riverside Presbyterian Basketball League, these facilities are already promoting health, sportsmanship, and connection. I’m grateful to have been part of the team that brought this vision to life.”
Following the ribbon cutting, guests enjoyed tours of the facility, refreshments, and time to explore the beautifully designed multi-purpose spaces that will serve a wide range of programming, from school activities and church ministries to outreach events and special celebrations.
The Mary Lou Davis Family Life Center symbolizes a strong sense of community and shared mission, reflecting the enduring collaboration between Riverside Presbyterian Church and Riverside Presbyterian Day School. This addition to the campus invigorates both organizations, fostering a commitment to support the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual growth of everyone who enters its welcoming space.

On December 19, 2024, the Class of 2025 received a surprise from Coach Clark and Coach Sullivan: they were led into the Mary Lou Davis Family Life Center to become the very first class to hold a PE class in the brand new facility.

From PE classes and volleyball games to parades, football games, Field Day, Run Riverside, and more – RPDS truly made the most of our first spring in the new spaces created by the Riverside Cornerstone Campaign!

We are grateful to our donors who have provided gifts and/or pledges of support to the Riverside Cornerstone Campaign during the period January 1, 2021 through June 30, 2025. This campaign supports the construction of the Mary Lou Davis Family Life Center, a renovated Rice Sports Zone, enhanced campus security, a new parking facility on Oak Street, and increases the endowment for church missions, campus facilities and maintenance, and student scholarships.

At Riverside Presbyterian Day School, a strong annual giving program is more than just a tradition, it is the foundation that sustains our mission and elevates every student’s educational experience. Through the RPDS Fund, along with cherished events like the Capers Gala and Run Riverside, we come together as a community to ensure RPDS continues to thrive.
Your gift to the RPDS Fund goes straight to work, helping cover essential daily expenses and responding to urgent needs that arise throughout the year. These unrestricted donations, typically totaling $300,000 annually, are vital to balancing our operational budget alongside tuition and endowment revenue. Every contribution helps bridge the gap between what tuition covers and the full cost of delivering the exceptional academic, athletic, artistic, and spiritual programs that define RPDS.

Mary Waldroff Director of Advancement
While our dedicated faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees lead by example with participation in the RPDS Fund, the support of current parents, alumni, and friends of the school is equally essential. Your generosity helps ensure we don’t need to rely on steep tuition increases to fund the programs our children rely on every day.
The RPDS Fund operates annually from July 1 through June 30, with our giving campaign launching each September. During Take Pride in Riverside Week, you’ll hear from enthusiastic parent volunteers via phone and email. We kindly ask that you respond with the same spirit of community and generosity that makes RPDS so special. Since 1948, RPDS has stood as a beacon of educational excellence in Jacksonville. Your support ensures we continue this legacy not just for your child, but for future generations.
Please join us in making RPDS your top philanthropic priority this year. Your gift, in any amount, makes a lasting difference.

The Riverside Presbyterian Day School endowment is a permanently invested fund that supports the school’s mission by generating annual revenue for need-based financial assistance and faculty and curricular development. All gifts are restricted to preserve the original donation and honor donor intentions, with only the fund’s earnings and appreciation used to support the school’s operating budget.

Each year, RPDS provides nearly $350,000 in need-based financial assistance to students enrolled at the School. Although this assistance is one way that we assure the broadest possible access to all aspects of the School’s outstanding educational offerings, each year our funds are exhausted before all documented needs can be met. The following named funds are instrumental in allowing the School to provide confidential assistance tailored to the documented needs of individual families.
