Easing Back to School Anxiety

I personally love the “back to school” season. There is a special energy in the air as everyone picks out new school supplies, the perfect backpack, and a fresh pair of kicks to start their adventure out on the right foot (pun intended). It is a time full of fresh starts, bright ideas, and endless possibilities! However, for some, especially young children, this time of year proves to be less exciting. New classrooms, new teachers, unfamiliar routines, and being away from home can evoke a whirlwind of emotions, often leading to a significant amount of anxiety. As a parent, you may find yourself wondering: Is this normal? How can I help?

Good news: You are not alone, and neither is your child. Many students experience nervousness at the beginning of the school year, and with the right support, most adjust well. Here is how you can help ease the transition and support your child’s emotional wellbeing in these first several weeks.

1) Acknowledge Their Feelings

It might be tempting to say things like, "There's nothing to worry about!"—but anxiety often needs to be heard, not dismissed. Let your child know their feelings are valid. Try phrases like:

“It’s okay to feel nervous about starting something new.”

“Lots of kids feel this way at the beginning of the year.”

When children feel seen and understood, their worries tend to shrink.

2) Establish Predictable Routines

Establishing a routine provides children with a sense of control and security. Aim to make mornings as calm and predictable as possible by implementing:

A consistent wake-up time

A protein-rich breakfast

A few minutes of connection before leaving for the day

In the afternoons, creating a routine for unpacking backpacks, completing homework, and unwinding can also be beneficial.

3) Practice Separation and Reunions

For young children, saying goodbye can often be the most challenging moment of the day. It is important to keep goodbyes brief, assured, and consistent. Establishing a special farewell ritual—such as a hug, a high five, or a secret handshake—can help make the transition smoother.

Let them know you’ll be there after school—and always follow through. Knowing what to expect helps kids feel secure.

4) Look for Physical Signs of Anxiety

Some children can not express their anxiety in words, but their bodies might provide information. Watch for the following:

Stomachaches or headaches

Difficulty sleeping Changes in appetite

Irritability or clinginess

If you notice these signs, it does not mean something is “wrong,” but it might be worth a mindful check-in with your child or even your pediatrician, if symptoms persist.

5) Keep Communication Open with Teachers

Teachers are your allies. If your child is struggling with the transition, do not hesitate to reach out. Most teachers are happy to provide updates and collaborate with you to find solutions that best support your child.

6) Normalize the Ups and Downs

Adjusting takes time. One great day may be followed by a tough one. That is completely normal. Celebrate progress—even if it is small—and remind your child (and yourself) that confidence grows through experience.

7) Model Confidence

Your child looks to you for cues. If you are feeling anxious about the school transition, try to manage those feelings away from your child. When you model calm and express confidence in their ability to navigate school, they begin to believe it, too!

Final Thoughts & Good News!

Back-to-school anxiety does not last forever. With patience, encouragement, and time, your child will gradually develop a sense of security and confidence. This first month is about adjustment—and with your guidance, they will find their rhythm. Keep the lines of communication open, be gentle with your expectations, and do not hesitate to seek support from your RAM-ily if you need it.
