WELCOME

GILES COOPER CHAIRMAN A very warm welcome to Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge this evening. Your support is so appreciated by us all at the Royal Variety Charity, so thank you so much for attending. I’d like to thank the staff of the Royal Household at Kensington Palace for their fantastic help and assistance, as well as the many police officers, security service personnel, theatre staff and TV production crew, all of whom have contributed hugely to this evening’s event and would particularly like to thank Fiona Clark, Lawrie Jordan, Mark Wagman and Amanda George from ITV. I’d also especially like to highlight from the Royal Variety Charity, our Matron Tatree Preece and all her staff at Brinsworth House, our Events Team of Katie Boland, Victoria Bond, Peter Hinton and Kirsty Bristow; all of whom have assisted greatly in helping me organise this year’s event. You all make me and every member of the Management Body so proud of your outstanding work. 2019 marks my tenth year as the elected Chairman of the Royal Variety and I’d like to thank my fellow Trustees, Honorary Life-President Laurie Mansfield, Vice-Chairman Phil Dale and Treasurer Ian Freeman, together with every Member of our 33-strong Executive Committee for their help, support, contribution and advice over what has undoubtedly been the most revolutionary decade in our charity’s history; we’ve achieved so much together and long may it continue! The Royal Variety Charity has constantly evolved, but has always existed as the entertainment industry ‘looking after its own’ and this would never have been possible without the unwavering support of continuing generations of our Royal Family. I would therefore, above all, like to thank our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, for her continued support. Lastly, but by no means least, a very big thank you to all of the artists performing in tonight’s ‘Royal Command’, all of whom have donated their services in support of the Royal Variety Charity. I’m sure you’ll all ‘do us proud’ and thank you so much for committing your valuable time and energy to this evening’s production. Let the show begin! Please sit back and enjoy!

TRIBUTE TO LAURIE MANSFIELD The Royal Variety Charity would like to pay tribute to Life-President Laurie Mansfield, who is celebrating 40 years involvement with the Royal Variety Performance. Laurie spoke earlier this year about his work with us. “I first became a member of the of the executive committee 35 years ago and during that time I have served as Chairman and Trustee as well as my current role as Life President. I have often said that Brinsworth House, our care home in Twickenham, is the beating heart of the Royal Variety Charity and this is very true. In the past our residents, who currently number thirty eight, have included Dame Thora Hird, Terry-Thomas, Charlie Drake and Charlie Chester, MBE as well as Leslie Grantham and Sir Norman Wisdom. Everyone is equal and as important as each other at Brinsworth House. I like to say each of our residents is ‘Top of the Bill’ - they are wonderful people and that includes our staff. I would like to pay particular tribute to our Matron as she and all of the people who work at Brinsworth House are the very backbone of this charity. The Royal Variety Charity also assists people who still live in their own homes, wherever that may be around the country. So, the charity is not ‘just’ a retirement home. We help as many people from the entertainment industry as we possibly can, and not only pensioners, but younger people too who need our help, as we all do from time to time in our lives.

Laurie Mansfield Hon. Life President & Executive Producer

14 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

For many years we were the only charity that had two Royal Patrons. First of all, King George V and Queen Mary (from 1921 to 1936) then King George VI and his Consort, Queen Elizabeth (from 1936 to 1952) and following His Majesty’s death in 1952, our present Queen became Patron, but given the Queen’s Mother’s love of the Royal Variety Performance, she wished to continue to be a Patron too - so we have been very fortunate. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother would attend the Performance every other year - often bringing along other family members including a young Prince Charles and Princess Anne - and then the following year The Queen would be there with The Duke of Edinburgh. Both the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret also visited Brinsworth House to meet residents from time to time, both officially and privately. We have our own stage there and a bar for people to enjoy. The Prince of Wales officially opened the conservatory, which must surely be the only one he has! I remember vividly the first act that I as an agent was able to place on the Royal Variety Performance in 1972 and it was really my introduction to the charity. That act was Rod Hull and his Emu!! Rod had arrived in my office looking for representation and out from his suitcase exploded Emu! It completely tore

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019 | 15

up the room, papers and contracts went flying everywhere! He started his career in the UK after travelling from Australia and here he was in my office and soon he was on stage performing for the Royal Family. It was quite a time! I was fortunate enough in the ensuing years to have acts on the Royal Variety Show and began a close relationship with both Lord Delfont and Billy Marsh, the great theatrical agent who booked the show. In 1979, Lord Delfont handed the reigns to Life Governor Louis Benjamin and recommended that Louis, Billy and I worked together on the Royal Variety Show and more importantly the charity. I was responsible for negotiating a longer-term deal with ITV and BBC, rather than year by year which had been the norm since the very first Royal show which was broadcast on TV in 1960. The result was a six-year term shared between the two companies and this ran until 2010 when I negotiated the current ten-year deal exclusively with ITV. The role of Life-President of the Royal Variety Charity was one

16 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

created for Lord Delfont himself, to acknowledge his great contribution to the charity, so it was a one off in a way, but when he died in 1994, he had left a letter to the Executive Committee, suggesting that I take on the role. In effect, he passed on the responsibility of the charity’s TV future. Prior to 1960, the charity was mainly funded from the income of the stage show and from private donations, but then we were able to add to this the television rights. Financially, this was a major step forward. We have always been grateful to ITV and the BBC for their enthusiasm for the show, it has always been a highlight in the schedules. Now of course, we are thrilled that Britain’s Got Talent is able to help us too and the prize of appearing at the Royal Variety Performance is often mentioned by the contestants as they progress though the heats, so much so they often forget there is a cash prize too!

The great thing about television companies being involved is that they created a situation where the music stars of the day started to play a much more important part in the show, whether it be The Beatles, Cilla, Take That, Westlife or Lady Gaga. It’s brought a whole new audience to the table too. Keeping the show relevant for each generation. There have been some great memories made by all the performers and people often say to me they first started watching the Royal Variety Performance as a child with their parents and grandparents. It’s lovely to hear that. One of the past Life-Governors of the charity, Louis Benjamin, was keen to ‘theme’ the performances, so one year the main aspect would be dancing, the next comedy or musicals. There has always been so much thought given to the production. The Royal Variety Performance is forever changing with the times, but we still maintain the quality and integrity of the show, just as we do at Brinsworth House really. We are forever wanting the best for the residents in our care and I like to think that those people involved in the charity in one hundred year’s time, will think those of us here today, all of us, did a good job, just as we thank those who have gone before us. I should like to pay tribute to all of the members of the Executive Committee and particularly our Hon. Chairman Giles Cooper, Hon. Vice-Chairman Phil Dale, Hon. Treasurer Ian Freeman who also my fellow Trustees. It is a truism to say that without their support and commitment this charity would not be able to function. But most of all, I would like to thank you, our supporters, as without your support and generous donations this charity could not exist. On a personal level, I would like to thank you all for making my role as rewarding as it has been and I look forward to your continued support. Let us raise a glass to this wonderful charity.

t continues to be such a privilege to be actively involved with, not only this great and traditional annual performance, but even more so with its beneficiary, the Royal Variety Charity; allowing us to continue our much needed work at Brinsworth House.

Phil Dale Vice-Chairman

Due to your generosity and the generosity of the artistes, sponsors and ITV, we have been in the enviable position of being able to organise a number of improvements at Brinsworth House over the years, bringing it up to the most modern of standards. The registered care home accommodates 38 residents, who are personally taken care of by the finest of nurses and care assistants and it is so heart-warming to see them enjoying these wonderful facilities and especially experiencing their delight when they are visited and entertained by today’s excellent performers throughout the year. We are so proud to be closely involved with such a wonderful charity and we are richly rewarded for our trouble by the very simple joy of seeing these once so-active and talented ‘old pros’ living in the comfort they deserve and most importantly seeing them safe and with a smile on their faces.

ow wonderful for us all to be back here at the famous London Palladium for the Royal Variety Performance. Your support for this spectacular and renowned theatrical event means the world to us all at the Royal Variety Charity. You will be aware that we have just begun the refurbishment of our care home, Brinsworth House, so financial support for the Charity is now more vital than ever. Brinsworth is well-known for providing the highest standards of guardianship and provision of care, and we are looking forward to providing our residents and staff with an enhanced and upgraded living and working environment.

Ian Freeman Treasurer

As the Charity’s Treasurer, I would like to record my thanks to our Finance Director, Martin Dalby and Finance Officer, Myra Harte for their hard work and dedication over the past year. The challenges we face to raise sufficient funds to maintain the levels of safekeeping for which we are noted are many and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your patronage and support.

COLIN THACKERY, WINNER OF BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT 2019, IN CONVERSATION WITH GILES COOPER, CHAIRMAN OF THE ROYAL VARIETY CHARITY Giles met Colin at his home, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, earlier this year. This famous London landmark, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is a retirement home for some 300 male and female veterans of the British Army. It was founded by King Charles II in 1682 and holds regular tours and the on-site museum is open to the public. Colin, it’s lovely to see you again, congratulations once more on being this year’s winner of Britain’s Got Talent. Thank you very much. What are you most looking forward to at the Royal Variety Performance? Well, singing in front of the Royal Family. This year is the centenary of the Royal Variety Performance that was known as the ‘Pageant of Peace’, following the First World War, so it’s particularly appropriate that you as a Veteran of the British Army will be performing for us all. Do you have any memories of past Royal Variety Performances you would like to share, any favourite moments? Oh I never miss them! Thinking of all the great names that have been on the show. The wonderful singers and the comedians of course and Sir Bruce in his inimitable style. 22 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

Below: Matt Munro on the Royal Variety Performance in 1966 at the London Palladium

When I served in Hong Kong there was a club called the Fleet Club and Lance Corporal Terry Parsons, who had been a bus driver in London, often sang there. When he went onto the stage he was known as Matt Monro. I just loved his voice. He was a great singer, known as the British Frank Sinatra. Yes and Matt Monro appeared at the Royal Variety Performance in 1966. Do you enjoy performing for a ‘live’ audience? I do. I’ve enjoyed recording my album in the studio, but I do love being in front of an audience and to get the response from people. I’ve now done so many other things too, including Songs of Praise. My most memorable concert would have been on a troop ship. Well, I must explain - on a troop ship - we all travelled on them in the old days - one of the best skives was to volunteer for the ship’s concert party. You could make a fool of yourself! That would have been my first concert, on the way to Korea. They were a lot of fun.

Did visiting Brinsworth House earlier this year, performing at the Royal Variety Summer Party, remind you of the Royal Hospital Chelsea at all? Oh yes, all of the people were of my own age, and you have ladies there, and well, we have ladies here at Chelsea too! And a bonus for me was that my sister and her family were there. As soon as I left the stage, I was amongst the residents and got talking to people and I recognised some from years ago. Famous faces from the telly. When you sang on your troop ship, sailing to Korea, did you ever imagine you would one day be on stage at the London Palladium and have your own record deal? Oh no, of course not! I didn’t think I’d get past first base on Britain’s Got Talent. I didn’t honestly. This was a challenge from a friend. After I had been singing in our club, they said “do something about it” and I said “what?” “well, enter Britain’s Got Talent!” I said don’t be so silly! What would I want to do that for, they won’t want an old man like me. And the rest is history. It was a marvellous thing to do. Is there one performer that you would dearly like to perform a duet with?

Above: Kathryn Jenkins on the Royal Variety Performance in 2012 at the Royal Albert Hall Right: Bette Midler meets HM The Queen following the Royal Variety Performance in 2009 at the Blackpool Opera House

Oh, that’s easy! Katherine Jenkins, oh yes. She is very popular here at the Royal Hospital. She is a really lovely lady in all respects. Katherine came here and sang in our club, but I was delayed by a rather long phone call and unfortunately I missed her singing, but I saw her through one of the glass doors and so we met and had a chat. Who knows if we will sing together. That would be the cream on the icing of another cake! You had a long and happy marriage, did you and your wife Joan enjoy listening to music? Did Joan have a favourite song? Oh yes, the Wind Beneath My Wings. We saw Bette Midler in the film Beaches, and it became Joan’s favourite song. We both loved music and Joan was a singer herself, a very good alto. When I left the army we moved to Norfolk and

24 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

we belonged to an opera society. We did loads of grand opera, we did Gilbert and Sullivan, we did shows, sang to old folk and WIs. It was great fun. Do you have any advice Colin for new up-and-coming singers? (Laughing) Do I have any advice?! I think what I would say to any young singer is work hard and go to a good teacher, there’s loads of them about. And sing everything. I’ve sung quite modern songs, I don’t mind what I sing really. I’ve recorded Supermarket Flowers, an Ed Sheeran song. And I’ve sung with the Old Bailey Choir. They are very good. We have sung some Vivaldi, I like the posh stuff! Do you have a message for our audience in the London Palladium? Yes, please notice I’m wearing the Scarlet Coat, which represents this incredible establishment, the Royal Hospital Chelsea. A magnificent place. Please come and visit us (we have an excellent cafe!). You will have the whole audience visiting now Colin! From everyone at the Royal Variety Charity, we wish to thank you for your support and best of luck with your forthcoming ‘Love Changes Everything’ concert tour! Oh thank you very much. Her Royal Highness was introduced to staff and residents alike and joined-in with a variety of seasonal festivities including singing Christmas carols around the Christmas Tree and the making of Christmas cards. Following the visit, Giles Cooper commented “We were absolutely delighted that Her Royal Highness was able to visit Brinsworth House just before Christmas. She is such a kind and caring lady and her visit really was an early Christmas treat for all of our residents and hard-working staff. She showed such genuine enthusiasm for the work of the Royal Variety Charity, making such an effort to speak with everyone she could and it was so great to see how she brought smiles to the faces of so many of our residents!

I

t’s a known fact that thousands of people who work in the entertainment industry face financial problems each day. The vast majority live from ‘job-to-job’, from ‘season-to-season’, many spending long periods with no work at all and with little ability to make any plans for their futures, or providing themselves with any financial stability. It is ironic that many entertainers and those working behind the scenes in entertainment, spend much of their working lives raising funds for other people’s charities and causes, but give little thought to their own future, security, or situation. Whether it be as a result of old age, ill health or difficult financial circumstances, the Royal Variety Charity is there to help.

THE REGENERATION OF BRINSWORTH HOUSE The refurbishment plans are imperative now to secure the future of Brinsworth House, but this cannot be possible without the help and generosity of loyal supporters and like-minded individuals and organisations

Brinsworth House lies at the heart of the charity. It is unique and often referred to by many in the industry as ‘The Old Pro’s Paradise’. For people who have spent their lives serving this profession, it could not be more important to be allowed to spend their twilight years surrounded by people who share interests and similar life experiences. The Royal Variety Charity is dedicated to ensure this can remain a reality for anyone who needs it, despite of their personal financial circumstances. The care home has gone through a significant period of change over the last 20 years, which has seen it move from a residential home to providing nursing care. This continues to present difficult challenges due to the

34 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

layout and design of the building, which currently lends itself to residential care rather than nursing care. Brinsworth House was converted to become a care home in 1911. It has served the entertainment community ever since. As years have passed and needs of residents have changed , the home is now in need of refurbishment. People are now living longer, fuller

lives, which has had a great impact on the care home. Residents tend to come to Brinsworth House later in their lives so their requirements have altered and intensified over the years but the primary mission, the provision of a safe and secure residential care home, solely supported purely by public donations, remains unaltered. The Royal Variety Charity want this to long continue but recognise the need for change.

Our staff and unpaid volunteers work tirelessly to help those in need throughout the entertainment industry, both in our care home in Twickenham and indeed all-across the UK - they are all truly inspirational people to work with. With 63 employed staff and 36 voluntary Members of our Management Body, its impossible to single out everyone, but I’d like to thank all the Members of our Executive Committee, including their elected Officers and Trustees for donating their valuable time throughout the year and for working so hard for those in need within the entertainment industry. Particular thanks must go to the Members of our Grants Sub-Committee, John Logan, Gordon Peters, The Dowager Lady Westbury CBE. JP and Pat Church who have met up regularly throughout the year to review applications for assistance from those who have worked professionally in the entertainment industry. I’d like to pay special thanks to Katie Boland and Victoria Bond in our Events Team, to our Operations Manager Peter Hinton, our Administrator Kirsty Bristow and our Grants Officer Sheila Powell. This year, I’d particularly like to thank our Head of PR, David Pogson LVO, whose work has been truly outstanding. His dedication and efficiency combined with his abundance of creative ideas has made him such a huge and invaluable asset to the Royal Variety Charity. I also give my sincerest thanks to our Financial Director, Martin Dalby, on his commitment, efficiency and dedication during the year and of course, to our elected Treasurer Ian Freeman and Finance Assistant, Myra Harte. It’s been a difficult few months for our catering staff as our kitchen and dining room have undergone the first phase of our Brinsworth refurbishment programme and I’d like to highlight our Chef Stuart Jones and Catering Manager Henry Sheerin for their additional hard work and resourcefulness during this challenging period. I’d also like to make a special mention of our newly appointed Fundraising Manager, Pippa Collins and save my biggest thanks for our Matron, Tatree Preece and to all the staff at Brinsworth House, for providing such excellent care for our many residents. They continue to make me and the entire Management Body so proud of their outstanding work.”

he Royal Variety Charity has been honoured with Royal Patronage from the reigning Monarch ever since 1921, when His Majesty King George V became the first Patron of the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (the previous name of the Royal Variety Charity).

His Majesty King George V also decreed, in the same year, that the Royal Variety Performance would become an annual event, after the success of the two previous Royal shows in 1912 and 1919. He added that the Monarch, or a senior member of the Royal Family, would attend an annual performance, in aid of Brinsworth House and the Royal Variety Charity, once a year thereafter, to demonstrate the family’s love and support for the entertainment industry and its associated charity. Royal patronage has continued ever since, and the Royal Variety Charity is proud to also have had as its Patrons, His Majesty King George VI, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and of course, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT

T

he hugely successful, annual ITV television show, ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, generously donates a proportion of the money raised from viewers’ telephone votes to the Royal Variety Charity each year.

The Royal Variety Charity, in return, arranges for the series winner of the show to appear at the annual Royal Variety Performance, which is held in the presence of a senior member of the British Royal Family and watched by many millions of TV viewers worldwide. The Royal Variety Charity is extremely proud to be associated with ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, and gratefully acknowledges the continued help and support of Simon Cowell and all at Syco and Thames TV. Chelsea Pensioner, Colin Thackery, won ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ in June 2019 - beating off stiff competition from X and Ben Hart. The 89-year-old British Army veteran from Norwich became the oldest ever winner of ‘BGT’ after singing his rendition of ‘Love Changes Everything’ in the grand final to over 10 million TV viewers. Upon winning, Colin said that he had taken part in the programme “for a dare” after performing at the Chelsea Pensioners Club, within the grounds of Chelsea Hospital. “One of the guys dared me after I sang at our curry lunch, saying ‘When are you going to do it?’ I said, ‘What?’ and he said ‘Go on Britain’s Got Talent’. I said ‘’Don’t be silly’.” Congratulations to all contestants and to all at Syco and Thames TV for producing another amazing series of ‘Britain’s Got Talent!’

arking the first time in over thirty years that two comedians have hosted The Royal Variety Performance together, tonight we welcome two of the UK’s best-loved comics and longstanding friends - Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan.

new role as ‘Judge Romesh’ for Dave. Proving he’s a man of many talents, Romesh has recently featured on the presenting team for ‘Comic Relief’, as well as fronting the BBC Two series ‘The Ranganation.’

Rob Beckett began performing stand-up comedy in 2009 and quickly enjoyed success, winning four new comedian competitions in his first year.

Last year saw Romesh become the new regular on ‘A League of Their Own’, whilst also embarking on his career in America with the launch of his own series ‘Just Another Immigrant’ on Showtime, which received critical acclaim and is currently airing on Sky One.

Rob’s cheeky chappy persona and energetic delivery has seen him make numerous appearances on ‘The Jonathan Ross Show’, ‘The Graham Norton Show’, ‘Would I Lie To You’ and ‘A League of Their Own.’ His quick wit and hilarious one-liners also made him the perfect choice of narrator for ‘Celebs Go Dating’, which he has voiced since 2016. Most recently, Rob has hosted ‘Comic Relief’ and ‘Children in Need’, plus two series of the Saturday night singing competition ‘All Together Now’ and the new quiz show ‘Head Hunters’ for BBC One. This autumn, viewers are again treated to Rob’s charms as he presents ‘Rob Beckett’s Savage Socials’ on E4 and will again be the team captain on E4’s long-running quiz show ‘8 Out of 10 Cats.’ Rob has achieved outstanding success with his live performances and, due to phenomenal demand, his latest UK tour ‘Wallop’ has been extended through to Spring 2020. Romesh Ranganathan is an award-winning British stand-up comedian and actor whose BBC Two series ‘The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan’ won an RTS at this year’s awards. Romesh has come a long way since leaving his career as a maths teacher behind, with two series of the BAFTA and RTS nominated ‘Asian Provocateur’, his own Sky One sitcom ‘The Reluctant Landlord’ and a

Tonight, Romesh joins us midway through his enormously successful ‘The Cynics Mixtape’ tour which runs until June 2020. Rob and Romesh started out in comedy at the same time and have a friendship spanning almost ten years, with Rob even performing his early stand-up routines in a pub owned by Romesh’s Dad. Earlier this year, the pair put their friendship to the test in Sky One’s ‘Rob and Romesh Vs’, a compelling series which saw them travel the world meeting celebrity icons and their sporting idols. Having previously performed at The Royal Variety Performance as solo comedians, Rob and Romesh feel especially honoured to be hosting this year’s star-studded event. “I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to be hosting The Royal Variety Performance with one of my best friends and best comedians in the country, Romesh Ranganathan.” - Rob Beckett “It is obviously amazing to be asked to host. Being asked to do so alongside Rob Beckett is both exciting as well as slightly taking the gloss off the honour.” - Romesh Ranganathan

His twelve number one UK albums, alongside a plethora of record-breaking shows, including one for the fastest ever ticket sales in one day, highlight his enormous success as both a live performer and recording artist.

On television, Frank created ‘The Frank Skinner Show’ on BBC and ITV, which is credited as setting the tone for the modern comedic chat show. With David Baddiel, Frank founded and presented ‘Fantasy Football League’ on BBC and ITV and also ITV’s ‘Baddiel and Skinner Unplanned.’ More recently, he has hosted multiple series of BBC One’s ‘Room 101’, Sky Art’s ‘Portrait/Landscape Artist of the Year’ and BBC Two’s ‘Frank Skinner’s Opinionated’, as well as numerous documentaries. Dear Royal Variety Charity Supporter, Another year has come to tell you all about Brinsworth House in this year’s Royal Variety Performance souvenir brochure. It is now six years since I accepted the position of Matron at Brinsworth House, a very unique and special Care Home. Brinsworth’s umbrella really does span the world of entertainment, both those who have worked on the stage or in the wings, including many performers, writers, directors, backstage technicians and agents. There is no “standard” admission to Brinsworth House as each resident’s admission is unique and person centred to the individual. However, wherever possible we meet each prospective resident with their family and friends to assess their care needs prior to admission. This is to ensure that all of their needs can be identified and will be fully met by our experienced Nurses and trained Health Care assistants. The home is supported by the Royal Variety Charity’s senior management team that consists of the Operations Manager, Administrator and Finance Director as well as the catering, maintenance, laundry, domestic and activities team that includes four volunteers who so generously give their time. Brinsworth House was purchased with generous charitable donations that would provide a Home for retired members of the entertainment world in 1911. Many things have changed since then but the primary one, which is the provision of a safe and secure Home using donations from the public, remains unaltered. One of the most significant changes over the years is the high level of Nursing Care that Brinsworth House provides to a number of our residents. Of the 38 bedrooms, 19 are registered specifically for Nursing and we are able to cater for a wide range of nursing care needs including palliative care. The other 19 rooms are for our residential care residents with varying level of low to moderate care needs. We have had a busy yet fulfilling year at Brinsworth House and one that we can all be proud of. We work very closely with our residents to support them to live fulfilling and quality lives and this was evident in our last Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection published online, in August 2019. The inspection was thorough with a detailed examination of our systems and observation of our staff’s interaction with our residents. Although potentially daunting, I consider such inspections to be a good opportunity to work with CQC in a productive way and I have nothing but praise for the Inspectors who visited us. In December 2018, we were visited by the Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Sussex who spent her time enjoying Christmas festivities with the staff and residents. It was such a wonderful day for everyone that left each of us with precious memories that will live on forever. Matron Tatree Preece RGN, ONC, BA(Hons), MA

In September, our team was nominated for the Dignity in Care Award by the London Borough of Richmond. Twelve staff were invited to the presentation ceremony with the Mayor of Richmond, Councillor Nancy Baldwin, and we were delighted that Nurse Gemma Bishop was the runner up for the award. Such a fantastic achievement! Our Honorary Chaplin, Rev. Canon Roger Royle visits us every month to help with the spiritual needs of our residents including giving monthly communion. He also spends time bringing the Christmas Spirit in on Christmas Day with Carols and presents. We are very happy to welcome Executive Committee member Kay Carman who now organises our fortnightly resident’s entertainment and parties.

I would like to say a special thank you to all of the staff and volunteers, for their dedication in actively supporting our residents, by enabling them to lead a comfortable and happy life, with their compassionate care delivery, their fine food creation, and their novel daily activities, including our twice daily bar openings. Some of our special activities were the Boat trip on the Thames, HM The Queen’s Birthday Celebrations, Kew gardens trips, Shopping trips, Full of Life Fair and our Intergenerational Gardening Project with our local school. For prospective residents, the thought of going into a residential care home can be quite worrying as it is a huge decision that needs careful consideration of how to adapt, as care needs start to change. If we are able to help you by answering any questions you may have on our admissions policy, funding opportunities or room availability then please do contact us on: Telephone: 0208 894 1351 or Email: peter@royalvarietycharity.org We request a biography, followed by completion of our application forms and then an invitation to visit Brinsworth House to give prospective residents an opportunity to gain a better understanding of what we are able to offer and to answer any other questions which may arise. Although we are fortunate to receive referrals and donations from other “sister” entertainment charities, much of our work at Brinsworth House would simply not be possible without the continued financial support from The Royal Variety Performance and the regular donations we receive from the public. I would therefore like to say a huge thank you for making this evening possible through your purchase of a ticket, which will enable the very important work at Brinsworth House to continue. I hope you all have a fantastic evening and enjoy the show! Matron Tatree Preece MA BA (Hons) RGN ONC

BRINSWORTH HOUSE CARE FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

T

he idea of a ‘home for retired entertainers’ was first suggested by Joe Elvin (the King Rat of the Grand Order of Water Rats) in 1908. The idea was received with great enthusiasm and a considerable sum of money was immediately pledged from across the entertainment industry. Various fundraising events were organised in conjunction with The Music Hall Artistes’ Railway Association and later that year, the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (the original name of the EABF) was formed for the benefit of artistes across the Music Hall and variety profession.

In 1912, Alfred Butt, Chairman of the VABF, proposed that an extension be built to Brinsworth House to accommodate the rising demand for the Home and he and Oswald Stoll persuaded King George V and Queen Mary to attend a ‘Royal Command Performance’ in aid of Brinsworth House. King George V and Queen Mary were so impressed by Brinsworth House and the work of the Fund that they became its Patrons from 1921. The Fund has enjoyed Royal Patronage from the reigning monarch ever since and the annual fundraising Royal Variety performance is, this year, celebrating its 106th anniversary.

The particulars of a dilapidated mansion near Twickenham were discovered and in August 1911, Brinsworth House was purchased for £2,400. Extensive renovations and alterations were needed, in addition to furnishing the Home and a special ‘Sixpenny Donation Fund’ was organised by ‘The Performer’ newspaper. The work was completed by November and a grand opening reception was held at Brinsworth House attended by many of the day’s leading artistes and journalists. At the reception, Joe Elvin and William McCarthy put forward an idea to establish a Society, to be known as ‘The Noble Six Hundred’ consisting of artistes and friends of the profession, each of whom would make a donation of £2.10.0 (£2.50) to raise the £1,400 required to pay off the mortgage. By the following April (1912), the entire amount had been raised and the mansion and 5 acres of land became the freehold property of the Music Hall profession.

In 1974, the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (VABF) changed its name to the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (EABF), and then again in 2015 to the Royal Variety Charity to widen its criteria of support and breadth of help to the entire entertainment industry.

A board was erected and placed in the hall of the Home with the names of ‘The Noble Six Hundred’, where it still stands today. By the end of November 1912, there were 10 occupants in residency, including one married couple.

Over the years, and with the continued help and financial support of the entertainment industry, two new wings have been added to Brinsworth House and on both occasions the care home was honoured by the presence of one of its most ardent supporters, the late HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who performed the opening ceremonies. More recently, a new Conservatory was built, which was opened by HRH The Prince of Wales; also a very keen supporter of the Royal Variety Charity.

Over the years, Brinsworth House has cared for hundreds of residents. To name but a few... Hylda Baker, Charlie Drake, Alan ‘Fluff’ Freeman CBE, Dame Thora Hird DBE, Richard O’Sullivan, Ben Warris and Norman Wisdom.

WORK OF THE ROYAL VARIETY CHARITY BY HON. CHAPLAIN, THE REV. CANON ROGER ROYLE

T

he late, great Dame Thora Hird, DBE, introduced me to the wonderful work of the Royal Variety Charity, the charity you are supporting by attending this Royal Variety Performance. For many years, I had been one of Thora’s regular visitors to her delightful mews home in London. She was the most wonderful story teller and I delighted in hearing about her years in show business and life as a child in Morecambe. The death of her beloved Scottie, her husband, manager, confidante, line-tester and very best friend, was a blow from which Thora never really recovered. Her daughter Janette was wonderful and she adored her two grandchildren but no one replaced Scottie. As the years went by, her health began to fail and there were fewer dates in the diary, something that really depressed her. She had live-in carers but towards the end even they couldn’t give Thora the care she both needed and deserved. So Thora moved to Brinsworth House, the Royal Variety Charity’s 36 bedded care home in Twickenham. For Thora the move wasn’t easy. It never is leaving your own home, but the care she received couldn’t have been better. On my first visit, Thora was sitting in one of Brinsworth’s very comfortable, relaxed lounges. A member of staff came and asked her if she would like tea for her guest. A tray of tea and biscuits was brought, put before Thora and she poured. This is the level of respect Brinsworth shows to all the residents. Under the wonderful leadership of Matron Tatree Preece, a dedicated and talented staff of nurses, carers, cooks, cleaners, handymen, gardeners and administrators make sure that the atmosphere of the home and quality of care is second to none, something that is recognised by the local authority on its regular but unannounced inspections. And the care is total care, body, mind and spirit. There are outings; one recent one concerned me. On two trips to the world renowned Kew Gardens during which, when visiting the Garden’s Beehive, they were told about the sex lives of the bees. Not only did they remember what they had been told but were only to pleased to pass on the information to me the next time I had breakfast with some of the residents. I felt I was getting a little too much information! The boat trips on the Thames are always enjoyed as are the afternoons of live entertainment which often bring back memories to those who, in the past, have “trod the boards”. Not satisfied at being entertained by others the residents are now putting on shows themselves. And there’s a Bar - you can’t ask for more! I so enjoy my regular visits, which have enabled me to share some very special moments with both residents and staff. But the Royal Variety Charity doesn’t just care for those who are in Brinsworth House. Regularl a committee meets to allocate grants to those in need. All this work is very expensive and this is why your support and that of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ is crucial. Mega salaries are reserved for the top stars. There are many people in show business whose salaries are not often that much above the minimum wage. The work isn’t regular and as regards pensions, well forget them!

Rev. Canon Roger Royle Hon. Chaplain

When I was playing Widow Twankey at Wimbledon, I had to remember that when the panto season ended I would be all right - I had other work to do. Many of the cast, especially the hard-working chorus, had no idea where their next job would come from. So it only takes illness, an accident or some other unfortunate, unplanned happening for the life of a performer, or one of his or her dependants, to be thrown into chaos, especially financially. Rent and fuel bills have to be paid, house repairs have to be carried out and food needs to be put on the table. Sometimes there isn’t even the money to pay for a funeral. This is where, because of your generosity, the Royal Variety Charity can and does help.

Zurcaroh, an acrobatic group based in Austria, gained international recognition for their show-stopping performances on ‘America’s Got Talent’ in 2018. With their explosive routines, daring acrobatics and precise synchronicity, they captivated viewers and became host Tyra Banks’ Golden Buzzer act in the competition.

Singer and songwriter Emeli Sandé quickly rose to prominence after her debut album ‘Our Version of Events’ was released in 2012. The record sold over five million copies and became the biggest selling album in the UK that year, beating The Beatles record for the most consecutive weeks in the UK chart for a debut album. Her incredible career has already seen her score three UK No.1’s, four BRIT Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards and in 2018 she received an MBE for services to music.

With more than ten years of stage experience, forty-eight active athletes and an age range from between six to forty-years-old, Zurcaroh create magical shows through expressive dance and spectacular acrobatic components unseen anywhere else. Directed by Brazilian choreographer Peterson de la Cruz Hora, Zurcaroh pride themselves on having nonprofessional dancers perform for the company. Since taking part in ‘AGT’, Zurcaroh have performed at events across the globe and have flown in specially to join us tonight. “We have been lucky enough to perform all around the world but the opportunity to perform in front of royalty is truly an honour. We feel so very privileged to be showcasing new choreography especially for The Royal Variety tonight.”

Tonight, Emeli joins us in the midst of a UK tour to perform ‘You Are Not Alone’, a song written by Emeli from her latest album ‘Real Life.’ In a special collaboration exclusive to the Royal Variety Performance, Emeli will be joined on stage by Manchester’s Bee Vocal Choir, a group formed to help those with mental health issues and improve emotional wellbeing through music. “It’s always such an honour to be asked to perform at the legendary Royal Variety Performance. The show explores the small tight knit community in Gander, Newfoundland, that invited these ‘come from aways’ into their lives in the days following those events and how their stories became a celebration of hope, humanity and unity.

The family of musical prodigies comprise of Isata (23) on piano, Braimah (22) on violin, Sheku (20) on cello, Konya (19) on Violin, Jeneba (17) on Cello, Aminata (14) on violin and the youngest Mariatu (10) on the cello. HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

T

he Royal Variety Performance was first staged in 1912, when His Majesty King George V and Her Majesty Queen Mary agreed to attend a ‘Royal Command Performance’ at London’s Palace Theatre in support of the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (now the Royal Variety Charity) and its proposal to build an extension to its Home for elderly entertainers, Brinsworth House, in Twickenham. No expense was spared at this first Performance with 3 million roses strewn around the auditorium and the Royal Box. The show opened and closed, as would become traditional, with ‘God Save the King’, and performers included the legendary Scottish singer Harry Lauder and male impersonator Vesta Tilley – the Queen reportedly covered her eyes with her programme at the sight of a woman in trousers. Ballerina Anna Pavlova was also in the line-up, having two years earlier caused a sensation in the Palace Theatre by slapping her male dance partner for dropping her by mistake. The controversial dancehall star of the day, Marie Lloyd, was not invited to perform as she was embroiled in a professional dispute and was in any case deemed ‘too risqué’ for royal eyes; she defiantly staged a rival performance at a nearby theatre instead, billing it as ‘By command of the British Public’, but it was not a success.

His Majesty King George V

82 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

This original show has grown from comparatively humble beginnings into a spectacle watched by a TV audience of over 150 million worldwide in 65 different countries. In Norway, for example, it has even become a New Year’s tradition to watch the Royal Variety Performance, which is broadcast at midnight on January 1st! The second Royal show in 1919 was the first to be given the current billing of ‘Royal Variety Performance’; held at the London Coliseum a year after the end of the first World War, it was declared ‘a celebration of peace’ and featured performers from allied countries including Australia and France.

In 1921, His Majesty King George V agreed to become Life Patron of the Royal Variety Charity – the start of an unbroken line of Royal patronage from the reigning Monarch, which continues to the present day. The show subsequently became an annual event when the King decreed after the Performance that ‘the Monarch, or a senior member of the Royal Family would attend a performance in aid of Brinsworth House and the Royal Variety Charity once a year thereafter’. By 1923 the show had become such an established and popular event that tickets would sell out as soon as they were issued. It was therefore decided in 1926 that that year’s Performance should be broadcast on BBC radio, for enjoyment by a wider audience. In the early 1930s the Royal Variety Performance moved to the London Palladium, which was to become its spiritual home for many years. Many stars still recognised today as timeless variety names performed in this period, including Max Miller and Gracie Fields; the 1932 show also saw debut performances by six comedians who went on to form the Crazy Gang, one of the most successful comedy troupes in British history. 1935 saw the Silver Jubilee of an ailing King George V and Queen Mary, and that year’s spectacular sell-out show proved sadly to be a fittingly grand end to the great support these Royals had shown the Variety Performance. The Jubilee drew huge crowds to the show, with people from all over the world desperate to get their hands on a ticket; one American millionaire offered a staggering £500 (around £36,000 in today’s money) for a pair. That year’s line-up included Stanley Holloway, Jessie Matthews and the Harry Roy Band, and was an enormous success; but the King who had paved the way for a century of Royal patronage and dedication to the

Entertainment’s Industry’s own Charity unfortunately died a few months later, in January 1936. A one-year interlude followed, during which King Edward VIII’s crown had barely touched his head before British rule and the reins of Variety Performance patronage were taken up once more by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother). The 1937 event was held again at the London Palladium, and it was widely agreed that controversial comedian Max Miller stole the show. Although no-one could have foreseen it, 1938 turned out to be the final show before World War II stopped play for the next seven years. As if anticipating the dark days ahead, seminal performances were given by an incredible 250 artistes, making it the biggest night in RVP history. Riding high on Hitler’s defeat, Britain channeled the spirit of victory into 1945’s event, billing it ‘The Victory Royal Variety Performance’ and turning it into a national celebration. Tommy Trinder played host to a cast of acts that included Sid Field and Vic Oliver, and Robert Nesbitt made his debut as director for what was to be an impressive 25 further shows. Our current Queen Elizabeth attended as Princess, aged 19, accompanied by the King and Queen and her younger sister, Princess Margaret Rose. Presenter of the 1947 Performance, Val Parnell, caused controversy by choosing several high-ranking international names at the expense of some rather less familiar, homegrown acts; he defended himself by pointing out that the purpose of the event was to showcase the Variety business to its best possible advantage for their Majesties’ enjoyment, adding as an aside that ‘We cannot afford, when people are paying ten guineas a seat, to experiment too much’.

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

The Royal Variety Performance continued to reach new heights in the ’40s and ’50s, the precocious star of the 1948 show being an enchanting 13 year-old Julie Andrews, who followed up her solo spot by leading the cast in a verse of the National Anthem in the finale. The original TV recording can be seen on our website and Facebook pages. In 1951 Michael Bentine, future Goon, pulled together an eccentric and hugely popular comedy troupe from six acts who had been regulars on the Royal Variety circuit since 1932; The Crazy Gang was born, and raised the rafters. This was also the year in which surprise appearances were made in the Royal Box by an absent King George VI’s two private nurses; Queen Elizabeth reported to his well-wishers that the King was, regrettably, too ill to attend, ’but he is listening in’. Richard Murdoch and Kenneth Horne sang His Majesty’s health. There was much excitement around 1952’s Variety Performance, being as it was the first in the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. No doubt to everyone’s relief, upon seeing the programme the Queen declared it ’the best show of all’ – one which featured the Beverley Sisters, Ian Wallace and Norman Wisdom. The Duke of Edinburgh took a particular shine to comedian Tony Hancock and his impersonation of a French Royal Navy commander. The decision of the Crazy Gang in 1951 to do away with the audience’s long-running fear of becoming too raucous in the presence of royalty proved such a success that in 1954 they took the idea to the next level; before the Royal family arrived, the Gang gave the audience a thorough warm-up by strolling in and out of their Box dressed as cleaners, and selling icecreams in the auditorium.

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

By a stroke of good fortune, two Royal Variety Performances were arranged in 1955; this meant that the country was perhaps not as disappointed as it could have been when 1956’s show was cancelled due to brewing unrest surrounding the Suez Canal. The performers themselves were distinctly piqued, however, and a disgruntled Jimmy Wheeler launched into his act upon hearing the news, announcing ’I’ve rehearsed this bloody act for a fortnight so somebody’s gonna hear it’. Fortunately not the Royals, however, as his impromptu act was somewhat more risqué than the prepared version. The first 1955 show was held at the Opera House in Blackpool, with predominantly regional talent such as Tower organist Reginald Dixon, comic double-act Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warriss, and a couple of young comedians by the name of Morecambe and Wise. The London line-up was more traditionally diverse, and included Benny Hill and the Chinese Classical Theatre Company. Independent Television’s bid to broadcast the show that year was swiftly quashed, on the grounds that TV would threaten the variety format. The format began to undergo some changes in 1958 at the hands of Bernard Delfont and Robert Nesbitt, not all of them well received. Delfont decided to cut back on long-established British acts in favour of the big American artistes of the day, Pat Boone and Eartha Kitt, as well as fresh local talent like Roy Castle, Max Bygraves and magician David Nixon. The omission of the adored Crazy Gang from the bill caused minor uproar. Further change was afoot in 1959 when the Performance was held, for the first time, in Manchester Palace Theatre. As well as the traditional comic element in the form of Al Read, an 18-year-old Cliff Richard made an angelic and well-scrubbed appearance.

The organisers finally gave in to the lure of televisation in 1960, a year in which the show was utterly eclipsed by Sammy Davis Junior. “In eight electrifying minutes,” the Daily Sketch excitedly reported, “this entertainer made the word ‘star’ seem inadequate”. The year 1963 was the year Beatlemania hit the Royal Variety Performance. The Beatles attracted ecstatic fans outside the Prince of Wales theatre and through the Sunday rehearsals the noise of the throng could be heard by the artistes on stage. It was necessary to construct a screened passageway between the theatre and the hotel next door, where the Beatles were staying, in order to get them in and out of the theatre without being seen. The effect of the crowds obviously affected the other artistes on the bill and Marlene Dietrich made a point of always being in evidence when the photographers were around! During rehearsal Paul McCartney managed to get his guitar caught in the curtains, but on the night itself the Beatles took the show by storm and John Lennon passed into Royal Variety history when he made his celebrated suggestion that those in the cheap seats should clap their hands; the rest could just rattle their jewellery. The original TV recording of the Beatles’ performance of three songs can be seen on our website and Facebook pages. A gifted comedy quartet comprising Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers were a massive hit at the 1965 Royal Variety Performance, which returned to the London Palladium. Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey were also on hand to provide a quintessentially 60s musical element.

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

The entire English football team took bashfully to the stage after their World Cup triumph in 1966, while the French singer Gilbert Becaud was forced to watch silently from the stalls after having lost his voice. Girl Power made its first appearance in the 1967 show, which was crammed to bursting with female entertainers after their absence had led to complaints the previous year – a modest Sandie Shaw was seen to have changed out of her revealing stage outfit to meet the Queen, commenting that ‘I am told it would be more elegant to be presented to the Queen in something a little more special!’ Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, a seasoned music hall and variety afficionado, announced that the 1968 Performance was one of the best ever. Des O’Connor, Englebert Humperdinck and Petula Clark all played their part, and former Supreme Diana Ross used the occasion to make a moving tribute to Martin Luther King, whose tragic assassination had rocked the world earlier that year. By the 1970s the RVP had really got into its stride, pulling the crowds in with line-ups that positively glittered with stardom; national treasures like Ronnie Corbett and Elton John rubbed shoulders with international sensations including the Jackson Five, Carol Channing and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. A rather risque sketch from the popular BBC TV comedy ‘Till Death Us Do Part’ found its way onto the 1972 bill, much to the consternation of a public keen to protect their delicate Royals. In the event, all went smoothly on the night and a rather harried Bernard Delfont reported afterwards that the Queen Mother had said ‘Well, that wasn’t too bad, was it?’ with evident relief. 1974 was the year in which the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund became the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (EABF), allowing a wider crosssection of showbusiness to fall under the charity’s

protective net. The use of ’Crossroads’ star Noele Gordon as the show’s first ever female host was an additional landmark for that year. In 1976, after 16 years of pre-recorded broadcasts, the Royal Variety Performance took a nerve-wracking leap into the world of live television. The long-suffering Bernard Delfont wearily recalls the poltergeist-level disruptions that beset that year’s show, including falling microphones, power outages and a persistent sound fault that rendered poor Mike Yarwood’s voice practically inaudible over a deafening orchestra. After two years in which to retreat and lick their wounds, the organisers braved the live format once again in 1978. Although all went well, the experience and the potential for embarrassment and disaster were deemed overall too stressful to make it worthwhile, and the show has wisely been pre-recorded ever since. In 1979, a no doubt grey-haired Lord Delfont passed the organisational baton to Louis Benjamin, highly qualified by dint of his position as managing director of Associated Television, chairman of Stoll Moss Theatres and life governor of the EABF. The show was held at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane for the first time.

tribute this was the year the company produced and presented the show. From then until 2010, broadcasting and production alternated each year between the BBC and ITV. ITV contractor London Weekend Television staged the Performance in 1987 and a galactic cast included Stephen Fry, Sarah Brightman and Tom Jones. Two breaks from tradition followed a few years later. The 1990 Royal Variety Performance, staged by the BBC, was billed as Queen Elizabeth’s ‘Royal Birthday Gala’ and took place in July in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. Roger Moore, Sir John Gielgud and the Band of the Grenadier Guards all made an appearance. The following year, a performance of the musical ‘Miss Saigon’ was put on for the show at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. After this, the Royal Variety Performance was held in London’s Dominion theatre for the next five years with a roster of household favourites such as Lulu, Cilla Black and Tom Jones.

The 1980 Performance marked Her Majesty the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday, and as such was a nod to all the variety show greats of the last 50 years who had kept the Queen entertained throughout her reign.

American rabbi-turned-comedian Jackie Mason vastly outstayed his allotted stage time, the adulation he was receiving seeming to blind him to the TV monitor mounted on the theatre’s circle flashing ‘GET. OFF. NOW!’ at him in large red letters.

1981 saw another innovation, stimulated by the need to counter the mounting costs of staging the show. For the first time, sponsorship was introduced to offset the unavoidable production costs and as a less contentious alternative to raising seat prices. Louis Benjamin also alleviated the financial problem by selling advertising spots in the Performance programme, and renegotiated screening fees in the UK and abroad.

Since 2008, Simon Cowell’s hugely successful ITV show, ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ has generously donated a proportion of the money raised from viewers’ telephone votes to the Royal Variety Charity. In return, the Royal Variety Charity arranges for the series winner of the talent show to be awarded with the muchcoveted prize of a spot on that year’s Royal Variety Performance. The first winner to perform was opera singer Paul Potts, followed by the incredible 14-year-

old street dancer George Sampson, then the ten-strong dance troupe, Diversity. Gymnastic group Spelbound wowed the audience the following year, followed by Scottish singer Jai McDowall in 2011, Ashleigh and Pudsey in 2012, Hungarian shadow dancers Attraction in 2013, Collabro in 2014 and Jules, Matisse & Friends in 2015. In February 2011, the Royal Variety Charity awarded exclusive broadcasting and production rights of the show to ITV1 for the next ten years, securing the future of this great entertainment institution until at least 2021, and further strengthened the Charity’s links with the country’s most prominent commercial broadcaster. The year 2012, saw a very special production of the Royal Variety Performance to mark its centenary year. The event was staged at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time, in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. A spectacular international line-up was presented that included, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Placido Domingo, Bill Bailey, One Direction, Girls Aloud, David Walliams, Rod Stewart, Andrea Bocelli and Neil Diamond, The 100th anniversary evening was celebrated in style with a further fund raising event at a lavish aftershow banquet at the Hilton Hotel on London’s Park Lane. This one evening of entertainment raised over £700,000 for the charity. The Royal Variety Performance has been hosted by many cities outside London, in its lifetime, including Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Blackpool and Manchester. 2014 was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the first time and was held at the London Palladium. It included a glittering cast including host Michael McIntyre, Bette Midler, Shirley Bassey, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Golding and One Direction. On 26th June 2015, the Executive Committee of the EABF met for an historic Annual General Meeting. Chairman Giles Cooper had previously gained approval from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office to change the name of the charity from the EABF to the Royal Variety

Charity and Buckingham Palace and the Cabinet Office followed by awarding the charity the honour of official use of the title ‘Royal’ within the charity’s name. The Executive Committee subsequently voted on that day to change the name of the charity with immediate effect. The 2015 Royal Variety Performance was staged for only the second time at the Royal Albert Hall and marked another first, with the attendance of HRH Prince Harry for his first time. Security was tight for the ever-popular Prince and it got even tighter as the night progressed and news of the numerous terrorist bombs in Paris spread amongst the security services. The show was led by its youngest ever host at 29 years old, Jack Whitehall, who introduced acts including the debut return of Jeff Lynne’s ELO, together with Little Mix, Brandon Flowers from the Killers, Ricky Martin and Sir Elton John. A highlight included a magical show stopping moment from the cast of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s multi-award winning musical Mary Poppins, when Mary flew to the stage suspended by a zip-wire stretching the entire length of the Albert Hall! However, a surprise addition from the relatively unknown cast of the Play That Goes Wrong, for many stole the show, and included some surprise star cameos including participation from Kylie Minogue, Josh Groban and Jack Whitehall! The 2016 show returned to London’s Hammersmith Apollo for only the second time in its history and was attended by TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. Hosted by David Walliams, highlights included Lady GaGa, Sting, Robbie Williams, Gary Barlow and Barry Gibb. The Royal Variety Charity then staged its official aftershow party and banquet at Grosvenor House on Park Lane for the first time. In 2017, the show returned to the London Palladium and welcomed back the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge for a night of spectacular entertainment hosted by Miranda Hart. The Royal Variety Performance 2018 was ‘a first’ on many fronts and in many respects felt like the beginning of a new era. The show was staged at the London Palladium exactly six months (to the day) following

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2019

the marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended their first Royal Variety Performance together on 19th November 2018. Her Royal Highness was pregnant with the Royal couple’s first child and huge crowds gathered outside the Palladium, on a wet and windy November night to catch a glimpse of the Royal arrival. On entry to the Palladium, Chairman Giles Cooper, explained to Her Royal Highness that the posy of flowers presented by 7 year old Darcie-Rae Moyse, had been handpicked from the gardens of the Royal Variety’s care home for elderly entertainers, Brinsworth House. He explained that this was the first time this had been done at the annual event and would be done each year going forward in memory of the Duchess’ first visit to the Royal Variety Show. Comedian Greg Davies presented his first Royal Variety Performance as host and for many was a highlight of the show. He began the evening

with a comic routine highlighting the differences between his Nan and the Nan of HRH The Duke of Sussex (The Queen!), culminating in an hysterical song, ‘the Nan Song’, which included a troupe of elderly lady ‘Nans’ singing and dancing with him, much to the delight of the Royal couple. A huge effort had been made to tailor the artists to the Duke and Duchess, including the Invictus Games Choir singing the national anthem, the original West-End cast of Hamilton, where the original stage set had been flown in from New York’s Broadway the previous week, the cellist from the Royal Wedding Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and the cast of Tina! The Musical.

A TRIBUTE TO A SIR DONALD GOSLING, KCVO A LIFE GOVERNOR OF THE ROYAL VARIETY CHARITY

A

part from his family, Sir Don’s first love was the Royal Navy. That shouldn’t surprise you when I tell you that in 2012 he was made Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom by Her Majesty the Queen. Coming a very close second was the world of show business. He may not have been a regular theatre goer but for more than a decade he would buy at least 40 tickets for the Royal Variety Performance and as you know those don’t come cheaply! He even bought tickets for this years show before he died on September 16th. As well as being a Life Governor of the Royal Variety Charity and a friend of Lord Lew Grade, he was also a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats and President of Vaudeville Golfing Society. How this all started goodness only knows apart from the fact that Sir Don and his business partner, Sir Ron Hobson as Joint Chairman of National Car Parks started doing business with the Rank Organisation. Their then CEO Graham Dowson started taking Don to film premiers and I think he got to like the red carpet and the receptions with the stars. The then Head of Security at NCP, Ivor Reynolds a former police man linked him up with the Vaudeville Golfing Society, not that he ever played golf to my knowledge. Having got that link, joining the Grand Order of Water Rats was a natural. Sir Don liked achievers and he certainly saw show business people as achievers. He loved laughter and had a fantastic memory for jokes some of which he even repeated to the Queen, not all of which were totally suitable for the whole family. Fortunately our Queen, unlike Queen Victoria, was amused. During the first Gulf War he flew myself and a wonderful comedian, Stan Taylor, to the Gulf to visit Royal Navy warships and entertain the sailors. Well certainly Stan entertained them but I have to say they also made me most welcome. There was another Naval visit. This time to a submarine which had been down below for over 100 days and had just surfaced off Italy. My travelling companion was another person from the world of entertainment, snooker personality John Virgo. This time when some of the submariners saw a “dog collar” on board they wished they had never surfaced! When Sir Don became associated with the Royal Variety Charity it was called the Entertainment Artists Benevolent Fund and he was well aware that not all entertainers were high earners. For some, life was very difficult when they fell on hard times because of an illness, an accident, a bereavement or an unexpected big bill. He took a particular interest in his fairly near neighbour Brinsworth House. He would go to the In House shows. He would listen to the complaints of residents. One complaint he always remembered was when the price of a gin and tonic at the bar went up by 10 pence. At Christmas time he always gave Brinsworth tins of biscuits and sweets as well as other goodies to be enjoyed over the festive season. Recent years he has sent a cheque which amongst other things covered the cost of the bubbles the residents drank as they and opened their Christmas presents. At the turn of the century he gave generously so that the conservatory could be built and was very pleased when HRH the Prince of Wales visited Brinsworth to open it in 2001. The conservatory has been a real blessing recently while the kitchen and dining room have undergone a much needed total refurbishment programme. Sir Don always had the insight to see behind the glamour and glitter of show business. He was well aware that times could be hard. Because he was the person he was, he was determined to help those who, having entertained others were now in need of support themselves. Sir Don, The Royal Variety Charity wishes to say a very big Thank You. Roger Royle
