The ROYAL VARIETY CHARITY extends a very warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to

THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES

THE PRINCE & PRINCESS OF WALES

for their attendance at this evening’s Royal Variety Performance

Welcome to the Royal Variety Performance 2025! We’ve got a spectacular night of entertainment ahead of us this evening so I do hope you enjoy it.

I’d like to thank Their Royal Highnesses The Prince & Princess of Wales for their attendance this evening. Their ongoing support of the Royal Variety Charity means so much to us all.

My heartfelt thanks to all the Members of our Executive Committee and Trustees, who give up their time voluntarily to support this great charity and I’d especially like to pay tribute to Former Life-President Laurie Mansfield for his many years of service to the Royal Variety Charity.

I’d also like to thank the wonderful team at ITV & Lifted Entertainment for their enthusiasm and dedication to this annual event, particularly highlighting Katie Rawcliffe and Richard Cowles for their continuing commitment to this fabulous British institution.

Lastly, but by no means least, a very big thank you to all of the artists performing in tonight’s show, all of whom have donated their services in support of the Royal Variety Charity. I’m sure you’ll ‘do us all proud’ and thank you so much for committing your valuable time and energy to this evening’s production.

Please sit back and enjoy! This is going to be a very special night!

ROYAL VARIETY LIFE-PRESIDENCY

At the Royal Variety Charity’s Annual General Meeting, held at St. Paul’s Church in Covent Garden on Friday, 20th June 2025, Giles Cooper was awarded the title Honorary Life-President of the Royal Variety, by Former Life-President, Laurie Mansfield.

The honorary title as the Royal Variety’s leader and figurehead, was awarded to Laurie by the previous Life-President, Lord Bernard Delfont, as it’s the Constitutional gift of the previous Life-President to bestow the title onto whomsoever he chooses.

Laurie chose our elected Chairman, Giles Cooper OBE, to receive the title and so from now on Giles’ full title will be ‘Chairman & Life-President’.

Laurie wrote the following letter, which was read out at the AGM, by Treasurer & Trustee, Ian Freeman:

Dear Giles,

Having stood back last year as being the lead-host for the Royal Family at the Royal Variety Show, it’s given me time to reflect on my role as Life-President.

As you know, the Life-Presidency of the Royal Variety Charity is an honorary title, awarded for outstanding service, but also carrying with it the huge weight and responsibility to run this wonderful charity with as much care and attention as the previous Life-President has done.

Lord Bernard Delfont awarded me the Life-Presidency in 1991 and with it passed onto me his trust and faith to run this iconic, royal charity, in the best way that I could and most importantly, to safeguard its financial security. It was a huge responsibility to take the helm at that time, most especially as the charity’s future was so uncertain, but he saw in me someone who had the vision and capability, and most importantly, his trust, to take the charity forward.

Since then, as you know, besides of being responsible for the construction of our original nursing wing opened by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, I have orchestrated numerous contracts on behalf of the charity, including the forging of our deal with Britain’s Got Talent (including its re-negotiation after its tremendous success became clear) and the securing of numerous Royal Variety Show television deals with the BBC and ITV, culminating in 2010, with a ten-year contract with ITV. My most important achievement, therefore, was being able to secure the financial stability of the charity by ensuring we had the best television contracts available to us and thereby securing our long-term financial security. It’s been a real privilege to be the figurehead for this wonderful charity for so long and see it develop from strength to strength, helping more people in need, than ever before.

However, the time has now come for me to hand the LifePresidency on, and it is, as you know, the sole ‘gift’ of the previous Life-President to choose to whom he should bestow

the Presidency upon. l have no hesitation in wanting to pass the Presidency onto you, Giles, and for you to take the life-long helm, of the Royal Variety Charity, going forward.

At previous AGM’s, I’ve communicated numerous times to all those present, including the other Trustees, Officers and Executive Committee Members, how your Chairmanship has been second to none. What you’ve achieved is unparalleled in our long history... from organising the entire refurbishment of Brinsworth House, to the complete overhaul of our governance, policies and staffing... your contribution has been outstanding and unique. Your work on the Royal Variety Show too, has been nothing short of fantastic. It is you that has transformed our ticketing, overseen the move to the Royal Albert Hall and singled handedly revolutionised our AfterShow parties into the wonderful successes that they are today. We now have a multimillion-pound show, returning record profits, and credit for this lies solely with you.

I hope that you will accept the role and please retain the title for as long as you so wish and until such time as you deem appropriate to hand it on to the next Life-President. However, be aware that it carries with it a heavy burden, the occasional sleepless night and the trust and faith of so many, not least our many residents and beneficiaries.

The Presidency and its honorary role as the Charity’s figurehead, does not affect your elected role as Chairman of the Charity. The Chairmanship is quite different to the honorary Presidency, which is bestowed, as the Chairman is elected by the Charity’s Management Body to lead the running of the charity on a daily basis. So, you can of course also remain as Chairman for as long as so elected and of course assuming you wish to remain ‘hands on’ with leading its operation, on a day-to-day basis.

If you accept, could you please have this letter read out at the AGM and from that day forth, you will be our new ‘LifePresident’!

If you agree, I would like to thereafter be known as ‘Former LifePresident, Laurie Mansfield’.

It really does give me great comfort to know that l’ve passed the Life-Presidency on to someone who’ll take great care of the charity going forward. I’ve very much enjoyed my long history with the Royal Variety and would hope that my 60 years of

experience in show business can continue to be of help and assistance both to you on a personal level and also to this great charity.

I wish you, and all those connected with the Royal Variety Charity, good health and a wonderful year ahead and, of course, a very successful Royal Variety Show in November!

Yours sincerely,

The Royal Variety Charity would like to congratulate Giles and offer its sincerest and heartfelt thanks to Laurie for his many years of service.

PHIL DALE VICE-CHAIRMAN

I’d like to commend the wonderful efforts of the Management Body of the Royal Variety Charity. We are all volunteers, giving our time freely to aid the outstanding work carried out by our employees at our care home, Brinsworth House and of our charity’s grants team, assisting those entertainers in need all over the UK.

What is so unique about the charity’s voluntary Officers / Trustees is that each one of us brings our own special skill set to aid the work of this great charity. For example, I’ve worked as a theatrical agent in television, theatre and radio for more years than I care to remember(!), our Chairman Giles Cooper is a renowned concert promoter and show producer and our Treasurer Ian Freeman, is a diligent businessman and PR guru.

The Officers / Trustees, together with the Members of our Executive Committee, volunteer their services every day of the year for this, the entertainment industry’s very own charity - bringing help, comfort and joy to so many in our industry.

However, we couldn’t do it without your support, particularly at this world famous, annual extravaganza, so thank you most sincerely and please enjoy the show!

IAN FREEMAN TREASURER

In the few words that I am permitted in this brochure, it’s hard to express the gratitude that I feel towards you all joining us here tonight. Your investment in the work of our Charity, in what we know are trying and challenging times, is a source of comfort to us all.

The Royal Variety Performance is our touchstone, the most important event in our year. It’s the major fundraiser which enables us to provide comfort, care and support for our Brinsworth House residents and for many others in their own homes who rely on us for regular or occasional financial assistance.

Our nursing, care and administrative staff continue to provide an exemplary service to our residents, beneficiaries and other stakeholders. My role is to ensure the financial health of the Charity and special thanks must go to my Finance Director, Martin Dalby, who works diligently to safeguard the Charity’s finances by keeping a close watch on our income and expenditure.

Most other charities would give their right arms to have the kind of loyal supporters and staff that we enjoy. In return, I pledge to continue to play my part in upholding and maintaining the wellbeing of this magnificent organisation, which I am proud and honoured to serve.

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FROM THE ROYAL VARIETY CHARITY

BEHIND THE BRIGHT LIGHTS AND SHOWBIZ SPARKLE OF TONIGHT’S SHOW IS ANOTHER DEEPER STORY, ONE OF CARE, COMPASSION, AND A GROWING COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING WELLBEING FOR EVERYONE WORKING IN LIVE ENTERTAINMENT ACROSS THE UK.

The Royal Variety Charity has long stood to support those people who dedicate their working lives to bringing joy to millions, but today its mission extends beyond merely financial support, with the aim to champion good mental health practices for all those who work to make the magic happen. The next act in the Royal Variety Charity’s evolution is to help artists and crews thrive offstage and between jobs, as well as implement healthy working practices when doing what they love.

A FOUNDATION OF CARE

The Royal Variety Charity’s earliest remit was to care for those who had fallen ill, had an accident, or simply hit hard times, and Brinsworth House remains, to this day, the physical embodiment of that promise. However, in recent years it’s become apparent that the concept of hardship has shifted.

The Covid-19 pandemic severely impacted the two industries our Charity most closely straddles: the Care sector and the Live Entertainment sector. The fallout has been felt ever since. Grant requests to the Charity began far more frequently to note signs of poor mental health in their applications. At the same time, the average age of applicants began to drop significantly, and as we moved into 2022, the Grants Subcommittee reported to the Executive Committee and Trustees that applicants for assistance were no longer largely 40 to 50-yearolds unable to work as a result of physical ill health, but increasingly 25 to 40-year-olds, many of whom were presenting with multiple health concerns, with references to anxiety and depression becoming far more common in their applications.

Application numbers continued to rise over the following two years, and it became increasingly clear that this was not merely a phase or a trend, but a seismic shift, not only in the lasting effect of forced unemployment on our sector, but also in the type of assistance being required of us. The statistics that began emerging only reinforced the lived experience of our Executive Committee. Across the UK, the post-pandemic mental health landscape has reached a critical point. Rates of suicide among men remain alarmingly high, with the Office for National Statistics recording 17.4 deaths per 100,000 in 2023, the highest male suicide rate since 1999. Hospital admissions linked

to alcohol and substance misuse have surged, with over one million alcohol-related hospital admissions in 2023–24, the highest since records began, and more than 310,000 adults were in contact with drug and alcohol treatment services - a 7% increase in just one year. These pressures sit alongside a steep rise in mental health related admissions and an escalating number of young people presenting with probable mental disorders, now estimated to be affecting one in four aged 17 to 19.

Led by our Chairman and Honorary Life-President, Giles Cooper OBE, the Royal Variety Charity established its Mental Health Subcommittee in May 2024 to coordinate and strengthen the Charity’s response, with the desire to ensure that those working in the entertainment community have access to the understanding, support and professional help they increasingly need.

Since the launch of our dedicated Mental Health Support Programme, the Royal Variety Charity has gone on to help hundreds of beneficiaries, providing them with funded therapy sessions, and we plan to increase this support annually. Performers facing burnout have found therapy and been supported in their recovery, backstage workers needing counselling have been provided with assistance, and long-term industry professionals have accessed support for the first time.

The Royal Variety Charity has further strengthened its commitment to improving mental health across the entertainment industry by forming strategic partnerships with leading specialist organisations. Working closely with the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM), the Royal Variety Charity helps to fund psychotherapeutic treatment for those in crisis, ensuring that performers, crew and creative professionals can access qualified, industry-aware clinicians. Alongside this, a new collaboration with Music Support offers specialist help to individuals facing challenges with addiction, recovery and emotional wellbeing, all areas where early intervention can be lifesaving. Looking ahead, we are exploring opportunities to develop a sector-wide mental

health framework for the live entertainment industries, working with partner organisations to share best practice, align referral pathways and build a sustainable model of care that recognises the unique pressures of life in the performing arts.

The Charity’s long-term vision for this work extends far beyond providing immediate care; we aim to embed systemic change within the entertainment industries, ensuring that mental health and wellbeing are recognised as integral to professional excellence. A key focus for 2026 and beyond is the development of a Mental Health Toolkit for live performance, designed to define best working practices and embed proactive wellbeing measures at the earliest stages of creative training. Working within drama schools, conservatoires and training academies, this initiative will aim to help the next generation of performers and technicians entering the industry by providing them with the skills, awareness and resilience needed to thrive.

Our long-term goal is to lead our sector’s move from a model of crisis intervention to one of prevention and resilience, creating an environment in which industry professionals can sustain long, healthy and fulfilling careers. The Royal Variety Charity aspires to set a new industry standard in safeguarding mental health and wellbeing, working alongside leading national mental health organisations, training providers and fellow entertainment charities to shape a unified framework of care and accountability across the performing arts.

Tonight’s Royal Variety Performance is more than a celebration of British entertainment. It is an act of solidarity with those who make the show itself possible. By buying a ticket, sharing our message, or supporting our work through future fundraising, donations and legacies, you are directly helping to fund the Royal Variety Charity’s mental health and wellbeing work.

Together, we can ensure that the UK’s entertainment workforce thrives not just on stage, but behind the curtain and beyond the spotlight - supported, understood and able to shine, for years to come.

ILLUSTRATION TO CELEBRATE

HM THE KING AS PATRON

To celebrate His Majesty The King becoming the sole Patron of The Royal Variety Charity, an illustration was commissioned last year by the charity from the artist Mr Paul Vale, who kindly donated his work for free.

This ink and watercolour illustration shows His Majesty, along with the then Royal Variety Charity Life-President, Mr Laurie Mansfield and the Royal Variety Charity Chairman Mr Giles Cooper OBE, at last year’s show.

The ink and watercolour illustration is designed to catch the colour and excitement of the most important night in the Variety Entertainment calendar. It was created from a selection of official photographs taken from the event. The artist is a theatre critic, often drawing during his time waiting for shows to start for inspiration.

This illustration will be a lasting reminder of the Royal Variety Performance 2024, and of His Majesty’s commitment to those working in the world of entertainment.

It will be hung in our care home, Brinsworth House, for all to enjoy.

THANKS FROM THE CHAIR

Ifeel so proud and privileged to lead this great charity and I’d like to highlight some of our staff and volunteers.

My heartfelt thanks to all our Officers and Members of the Executive Committee for freely giving up their time for the Royal Variety Charity throughout the year. We’ve achieved so much together and we’re now helping more people in need than at any other time in our long history.

I’d like to pay special tribute to our Treasurer, Ian Freeman, who voluntarily works tirelessly week after week, and to our Vice-Chairman Phil Dale, whose long service to the charity has been rewarded with him stepping up to accompany me in the Royal Box to co-host our Royal guests of honour this evening, and going forward.

Our new ‘Mental Health Sub-Committee’ grows from strength to strength & this combined with our never-busier ‘Grant Sub-Committee’, means we can be collectively proud of our huge work & achievements in these essential areas.

Special thanks to our Honorary Chaplain, the Rev. Simon Grigg, who really has transformed the role of Chaplain during his first full year in the role, with resident trips to sites such as Westminster Abbey and the monthly singing of hymns for our residents at Brinsworth House.

I’d like to thank all those who went out of their way to raise money for our charity. Our Head of Operations & Partnerships - Peter Hinton, Activities Coordinator - Angelica Lundekesi, Executive Committee Member - Martin Jones and daughter of former resident Mike Yarwood - Clare Yarwood, recently completed the Big Half (London’s Half Marathon) and raised a magnificent sum for the charity.

I’d particularly like to thank our Senior Management Team of Martin Dalby, Kim Brady, Kirsty Bristow and Peter Hinton for all their hard work throughout the year and of course, all our nurses, carers, grants officers, maintenance staff & kitchen staff, the names of whom are too many to mention here, but you know who you are.

Thanks to Katie Wilkinson for the superb entertainment at Brinsworth and to David Pogson LVO our fantastic Head of PR, plus a warm welcome to our new Marketing Manager, Yvonne Dawson.

Lastly, I’d like to thank our wonderful events team, headed up by Victoria Bond and assisted by Kathryn Buston and Heather Cooper. PADDINGTON: THE MUSICAL

PADDINGTON The Musical is currently running at the Savoy Theatre with music and lyrics by Tom Fletcher, book by Jessica Swale and direction by Luke Sheppard. Packed with show-stopping songs, dazzling choreography, mischief and mayhem at every turn – and of course, marmalade sandwiches – PADDINGTON The Musical is based on the iconic characters from Michael Bond’s books, with a story inspired by the award-winning 2014 fi lm by STUDIOCANAL. The principal cast is Timi Akinyosade (Tony), Amy Booth-Steel (Lady Sloane), Tarinn Callender (Grant), Delilah Bennett-Cardy (Judy Brown), Adrian Der Gregorian (Mr. Brown), Tom Edden (Mr. Curry), Brenda Edwards (Tanya), Amy Ellen Richardson (Mrs. Brown), Victoria HamiltonBarritt (Millicent Clyde), Teddy Kempner (Mr Gruber), Bonnie Langford (Mrs. Bird), with James Hameed and Arti Shah as Paddington.

TOM DAVIS

Tom Davis is a comedian, actor, and writer best known for hit shows ‘King Gary’, ‘The Curse’, and the BAFTA and Royal Television Society Award-winning ‘Murder in Successville’, establishing him as one of the UK’s most impressive comedy talents.

A familiar face across television and film, Tom’s credits include ‘Wonka’, ‘Paddington 2’ and ‘A Thousand Blows.’ He also co-hosts the hugely popular podcast ‘Wolf and Owl’ alongside Romesh Ranganathan.

Returning to his stand-up roots, Tom toured the UK with his debut solo show Underdog. The Times praised his performance, writing that audiences were “unable to resist the undiluted appeal of Davis’s delivery and stage persona.”

Tom has also performed on BBC’s Live at the Apollo, and in 2026, he hits the road again with his brand-new tour Spugun.

“Performing at the Royal Variety is a proper pinch yourself moment. I’ve been lucky enough to work with The King’s Trust and see the difference they make to people trying to turn their lives around — so to now perform for the Royal Family, it’s a really proud full-circle moment.”

AAIRFOOTWORKS

IRFOOTWORKS (from Japan) is the only dance group in the world that performs a brand new dance style called “Air Dance”, which involves the troupe choreographing routines by hanging on horizontal bars. This style of dance was created by Takashi Jonishi in 2014 who went on to form Airfootworks 4 years later. This dance style gives the illusion of ‘floating’ or ‘walking in the air’ and they have enjoyed great success internationally and performed their eye-catching routines around the world. They also hold the Guinness World Record for a team’s most consecutive synchronised horizontal bar rotations at an impressive 38.

They will be flying in tonight to especially perform on the show.

“We’re truly honoured to participate in this special occasion and perform on the Royal Variety Performance. It’s a very rare chance for performing artists like us, and it will be one of our best experiences ever for sure. It means a lot to us and we feel a big responsibility to make the show delightful. We can’t wait to perform in front of the Royal Family”

LES MISERABLES 40TH CELEBRATION

ADRIAN STOICA & HURRICANE

One of the most established dog trainers internationally, Adrian found the perfect partner in Hurricane, winning America’s Got Talent in 2023. With a passion for sport, acting and storytelling, they are the most loved human and dog duo in America, as well as being appreciated and adored from all over the world on social media. Having performed many of their comedy shows together, Hurricane was the first dog ever to perform live in theatre in Las Vegas at AGT Superstars Live. Adrian has secured 41 European Championships and 7 disc dog world titles with not only Hurricane by his side, but also his 8 other canine friends. Adrian’s goal is to share the culture of dogs and aims to give people a better understanding and respect for the species both physically and emotionally - he says they are “the magic side of our everyday life”. The foundation of their performance relies on mutual trust and enjoyment, with high dynamics, wowfactor and working in harmony – a result of much training, technique and above all, a solid relationship that binds them as best friends!

Mick Miller has become a national treasure after over 50 years in the comedy business. From humble beginnings as a “Sports Host” at Pontins, to performing for Royalty tonight. Born in Liverpool, he competed with his classmates to become the “Class Clown”, but on leaving school, he wanted to be a professional football player. Football legend Stanley Matthews signed him to Port Vale as a goalkeeper, but sadly he didn’t make the grade. Instead, he got a job as a Blue Jacket at Pontins. In 1976, he won his heat on ITV’s talent show, “New Faces”, then becoming a regular on ITV’s “The Comedians”.

Mick has performed all over the world and is very proud of entertaining our troops during the Falklands, Bosnia, and Gulf conflicts. Staying relevant, he is now a social media star with millions of views.

“For over 50 years, I have had the best job in the world. I have loved every single minute, so to be asked to perform at this year’s Royal Variety Performance is the icing on my cake. Every entertainer wants to be part of this wonderful event, and I am so proud to have been asked this year. I can’t put into words what this means to me (Oh, and it looks good on the CV!).”

KINKY BOOTS: THE MUSICAL MADNESS

With 15 UK Top 10 singles and global smashes including Our House, House of Fun, Wings of A Dove, Baggy Trousers and It Must Be Love, Madness has grown into one of Britain’s most successful and best-loved bands, selling millions of records worldwide, inspiring generations of artists.

Appearing everywhere from Top of the Pops to the roof of Buckingham Palace, they’ve recently completed their biannual Christmas Extravaganza UK arena tour, and topped the UK charts in 2023 with their studio album, C’est La Vie. The band has just released a new greatest hits package ‘Hit Parade’, encompassing 45 singles across 45 years.

A Nutty Xmas to one and all… long may they reign!

“As one knows, we have performed on many TV shows and even Royal events but have waited over 45 years to be invited to perform on the Royal Variety stage… we thought we’d never be asked! It is our honour and pleasure to take part in and support the show and its associated charity, which we recently learnt provides support for elderly entertainers. Oh what fun we’ll have!”

The multi-award-winning musical KINKY BOOTS is strutting its way to London in a joyous, brand-new production starring Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe. The acclaimed West End and Broadway sensation runs at the London Coliseum from March 2026 for a limited season only.

Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and based on an uplifting true story and much-loved movie, KINKY BOOTS features Tony and Grammy Award-winning music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, a hilarious book by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein and is directed by the awardwinning Nikolai Foster (Grease and The Wizard of Oz).

‘Believe me when I say, this is a dream come true. My journey with Kinky Boots has been six years in the making, Lola was the only role I ever dreamed of playing. To now bring her to life at the Royal Variety Performance, in front of the Royal Family, on a stage that has hosted the greatest entertainers in history - is beyond anything I could have imagined. I’ll be following in the footsteps of legends.’ - Johannes Radebe

Jessie J is a BRIT award-winning, Grammy nominated British singersongwriter known for her seismic vocals, and is about to release her latest album Don’t Tease Me With A Good Time.

“When asked to perform at The Royal Variety this year, I wanted to sing a song that is very personal to me, to give this song such a big platform to be heard when I deeply believe this song can and will help other people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts, or family and friends who are grieving those they have lost. 7 years ago I lost one of my best friends to suicide. The last time I did the Royal Variety he was on the side of the stage watching. Given the special but so often difficult time of year for so many, and how the suicide rates soar all over the world it’s so important we acknowledge this and support those in a dark place the best we can. I hope this performance can lead to support, love, and more open conversations about how we can support those in need.”

is honoured to partner with the Royal Variety Charity in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of those working across the music and entertainment industry. Through collaboration, we’re building a joined-up approach that helps people at every stage, from crisis to recovery, to staying well and thriving. About Music Support: Music

A ROYAL GRANTS SERVICE THAT CHANGES LIVES

very year the Royal Variety Charity supports hundreds of applicants with financial support and an understanding ear that can remove burdens for them and their families. The funding from tonight’s event enables our grants officers to touch someone’s life in an incredibly rewarding way, and for the Charity to operate as a unique service for connection and care.

For some of us it’s hard to imagine the hardship faced by an increasing number of those who work in the entertainment industry. The arts can captivate and entertain us and as a career it sounds so glamorous and fulfilling, but the reality can be demanding and fluctuating and therefore, the challenges faced when things down turn can be amplified. The Charity’s role is clear and has remained steadfast for over a hundred years – there is help for any UK citizen who has worked in the British entertainment industry for over seven years. This sets us apart from other benevolent charities in the arts sector, in that we cast our supportive net wider and further to catch those in need who could fall between the varying services’ gaps.

Monetary help can quickly alleviate stresses, but the Charity’s trained and compassionate grants team go one step further. We work with the people who contact us, never against them. Our ethos is non-judgemental, and we seek to take the ‘edge off life’ in a way that brings an empowered turning point to a crisis. By getting to the root of the issue and not just operating as a statutory welfare service we look for how to bring the best impact. Applicants may come to us for quick solutions when cash dries up through lack of work, but through collaboration, we can learn that perhaps they don’t own basics like a fridge. Noticing a need like that can solve the broader problem of a person feeling trapped in a miserable cycle. So, we provide the white goods with added kindness, and the applicant can start afresh, learn to manage better and lift themselves up.

We aim to provide a personal service, but we are also careful. Years of benevolent support have allowed the Charity to operate with strength in a complex environment. Applicants can feel ‘pressure-cooked’ by their compounded experiences. We want them to have a better moment, and we always hope to do-it-right by the human in front of us. There are those who need help with external documentation, those who are too frail to complete an application form, and there are those whose life just needs a trained intervention to flourish. The Charity knows that, rather than give a cold lump sum by giving monthly food vouchers to a young family alongside some direction to wider welfare eligibility, can have a huge knock-on effect in their personal world.

We see no typical applicant, age ranges are broad and expanding and job categories include actors, dancers, musicians, comedians, film crew, scriptwriters and producers. We will work in conjunction with other benevolent charities, and with discretion we craft the best solution for the applicant. Even if our criteria cannot be met, we never abandon, we always signpost in a way that supports a person’s dignity and builds self-management.

Recent applicants include a female who had enjoyed touring and working in theatre wardrobe for many years. Covid forced her into self-employment, and then when she developed breast cancer she found she could no longer

work due to the chemotherapy side effects. She made ends meet by selling her belongings but had to draw the line at losing her car, otherwise she had no way to get herself to the hospital. The Royal Variety Charity was proud to help her repair her car and saw that this also helped her recover from illness. Another established and skilled female with broad creative skills picked up an illness on an overseas work touran infection so bad that it caused a cracked rib. Added to this she was enduring close relative bereavement and relationship breakdown. She needed support and a helping hand to get back on her feet. Again, we were there to assist with connection and supported at a time of uncertainty.

to friends rather than a charity.

Their help enabled me to start a course of osteopathy for my condition, and I didn’t need to worry about that winter’s heating costs.

Even months later I get the occasional phone call or email asking how I’m getting on which is lovely!

Wonderful people providing a wonderful service to those in need.

Thank you, C

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

he Royal Variety Performance was first staged in 1912, when His Majesty King George V and Her Majesty Queen Mary agreed to attend a ‘Royal Command Performance’ at London’s Palace Theatre in support of the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (now the Royal Variety Charity) and its proposal to build an extension to its Home for elderly entertainers, Brinsworth House, in Twickenham.

No expense was spared at this first Performance with three million roses strewn around the auditorium and the Royal Box. The show opened and closed, as would become traditional, with ‘God Save the King’, and performers included the legendary Scottish singer Harry Lauder and male impersonator Vesta Tilley – the Queen reportedly covered her eyes with her programme at the sight of a woman in trousers. Ballerina Anna Pavlova was also in the line-up, having two years earlier caused a sensation in the Palace Theatre by slapping her male dance partner for dropping her by mistake. The controversial dancehall star of the day, Marie Lloyd, was not invited to perform as she was embroiled in a professional dispute and was in any case deemed ‘too risqué’ for royal eyes; she defiantly staged a rival performance at a nearby theatre instead, billing it as ‘By command of the British Public’, but it was not a success.

This original show has grown from comparatively humble beginnings into a spectacle watched by a TV audience of over 150 million worldwide in 65 different countries. In Norway, for example, it has even become a New Year’s tradition to watch the Royal Variety Performance, which is broadcast at midnight on January 1st! The second Royal show in 1919 was the first to be given the current billing of ‘Royal Variety Performance’; held at the London Coliseum a year after the end of the first World War, it was declared ‘a celebration of peace’ and featured performers from allied countries including Australia and France.

In 1921, His Majesty King George V agreed to become Life Patron of the Royal Variety Charity – the start of an unbroken line of Royal patronage from the reigning Monarch, which continues to the present day. The show subsequently became an annual event when the King decreed after the Performance that ‘the Monarch, or a senior member of the Royal Family would attend a performance in aid of Brinsworth House and the Royal Variety Charity once a year thereafter’.

By 1923 the show had become such an established and popular event that tickets would sell out as soon as they were issued. It was therefore decided in 1926 that that year’s Performance should be broadcast on BBC radio, for enjoyment by a wider audience.

In the early 1930s the Royal Variety Performance moved to the London Palladium, which was to become its spiritual home for many years. Many stars still recognised today as timeless variety names performed in this period, including Max Miller and Gracie Fields; the 1932 show also saw debut performances by six comedians who went on to form the Crazy Gang, one of the most successful comedy troupes in British history.

1935 saw the Silver Jubilee of an ailing King George V and Queen Mary, and that year’s spectacular sell-out show proved sadly to be a fittingly grand end to the great support these Royals had shown the Variety Performance. The Jubilee drew huge crowds to the show, with people from all over the world desperate to get their hands on a ticket; one American millionaire offered a staggering £500 (around £36,000 in today’s money) for a pair.

That year’s line-up included Stanley Holloway, Jessie Matthews and the Harry Roy Band, and was an enormous success; but the King who had paved the way for a century of Royal patronage and dedication to the entertainment’s industry’s own charity unfortunately died a few months later, in January 1936. A one-year interlude followed, during which King Edward VIII’s crown had barely touched his head before British rule and the reins of Variety Performance patronage were taken up once more by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother). The 1937 event was held again at the London Palladium, and it was widely agreed that controversial comedian Max Miller stole the show.

Although no-one could have foreseen it, 1938 turned out to be the final show before World War II stopped play for the next seven years. As if anticipating the dark days ahead, seminal performances were given by an incredible 250 artistes, making it the biggest night in RVP history.

His Majesty King George V

Riding high on Hitler’s defeat, Britain channelled the spirit of victory into 1945’s event, billing it ‘The Victory Royal Variety Performance’ and turning it into a national celebration.

Tommy Trinder played host to a cast of acts that included Sid Field and Vic Oliver, and Robert Nesbitt made his debut as director for what was to be an impressive 25 further shows. Queen Elizabeth II attended as Princess, aged 19, accompanied by the King and Queen and her younger sister, Princess Margaret Rose.

Presenter of the 1947 Performance, Val Parnell, caused controversy by choosing several high-ranking international names at the expense of some rather less familiar, home-grown acts; he defended himself by pointing out that the purpose of the event was to showcase the Variety business to its best possible advantage for their Majesties’ enjoyment, adding as an aside that ‘We cannot afford, when people are paying ten guineas a seat, to experiment too much’.

The Royal Variety Performance continued to reach new heights in the ’40s and ’50s, the precocious star of the 1948 show being an enchanting 13 year-old Julie Andrews, who followed up her solo spot by leading the cast in a verse of the National Anthem in the finale. The original TV recording can be seen on our website and Facebook pages.

In 1951 Michael Bentine, future Goon, pulled together an eccentric and hugely popular comedy troupe from six acts who had been regulars on the Royal Variety circuit since 1932; The Crazy Gang was born, and raised the rafters.

This was also the year in which surprise appearances were made in the Royal Box by an absent King George VI’s two private nurses; Queen Elizabeth reported to his well-wishers that the King was, regrettably, too ill to attend, ’but he is listening in’. Richard Murdoch and Kenneth Horne sang His Majesty’s health.

There was much excitement around 1952’s Variety Performance, being as it was the first in the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. No doubt to everyone’s relief, upon seeing the programme the Queen declared it ’the best show of all’ – one which featured the Beverley Sisters, Ian Wallace and Norman Wisdom. The Duke of Edinburgh took a particular shine to comedian Tony Hancock and his impersonation of a French Royal Navy commander.

The decision of the Crazy Gang in 1951 to do away with the audience’s long-running fear of becoming too raucous in the presence of royalty proved such a success that in 1954 they took the idea to the next level; before the Royal Family arrived, the Gang gave the audience a thorough warm-up by strolling in and out of their Box dressed as cleaners, and selling icecreams in the auditorium.

By a stroke of good fortune, two Royal Variety Performances were arranged in 1955; this meant that the country was perhaps not as disappointed as it could have been when 1956’s show was cancelled due to brewing unrest surrounding the Suez Canal. The performers themselves were distinctly piqued, however, and a disgruntled Jimmy Wheeler launched into his act upon hearing the news, announcing ’I’ve rehearsed this bloody act for a fortnight so somebody’s gonna hear it’. Fortunately not the Royals, however, as his impromptu act was somewhat more risqué than the prepared version. The first 1955 show was held at the Opera House in Blackpool, with predominantly regional talent such as Tower organist Reginald Dixon, comic doubleact Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warriss, and a couple of young comedians by the name of Morecambe and Wise. The London line-up was more traditionally diverse, and included Benny Hill and the Chinese Classical Theatre Company. Independent Television’s bid to broadcast the show that year was swiftly

quashed, on the grounds that TV would threaten the variety format.

The format began to undergo some changes in 1958 at the hands of Bernard Delfont and Robert Nesbitt, not all of them well received. Delfont decided to cut back on long-established British acts in favour of the big American artistes of the day, Pat Boone

The original TV recording of the Beatles’ performance of three songs can be seen on our website and Facebook pages.

A gifted comedy quartet comprising Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers were a massive hit at the 1965 Royal Variety Performance, which returned to the London Palladium. Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey were also on hand to provide a quintessentially 60s musical element.

The entire English football team took bashfully to the stage after their World Cup triumph in 1966, while the French singer Gilbert Becaud was forced to watch silently from the stalls after having lost his voice.

Further change was afoot in 1959 when the Performance was held, for the first time, in Manchester Palace Theatre. As well as the traditional comic element in the form of Al Read, an 18-year-old Cliff Richard made an angelic and well-scrubbed appearance.

The organisers finally gave in to the lure of televisation in 1960, a year in which the show was utterly eclipsed by Sammy Davis Jr. “In eight electrifying minutes,” the Daily Sketch excitedly reported, “this entertainer made the word ‘star’ seem inadequate”.

The year 1963 was the year Beatlemania hit the Royal Variety Performance. The Beatles attracted ecstatic fans outside the Prince of Wales Theatre and through the Sunday rehearsals the noise of the throng could be heard by the artistes on stage. It was necessary to construct a screened passageway between the theatre and the hotel next door, where the Beatles were staying, in order to get them in and out of the theatre without being seen. The effect of the crowds obviously affected the other artistes on the bill and Marlene Dietrich made a point of always being in evidence when the photographers were around!

During rehearsal Paul McCartney managed to get his guitar caught in the curtains, but on the night itself the Beatles took the show by storm and John Lennon passed into Royal Variety history when he made his celebrated suggestion that those in the cheap seats should clap their hands; the rest could just rattle their jewellery.

Girl Power made its first appearance in the 1967 show, which was crammed to bursting with female entertainers after their absence had led to complaints the previous year – a modest Sandie Shaw was seen to have changed out of her revealing stage outfit to meet the Queen, commenting that ‘I am told it would be more elegant to be presented to the Queen in something a little more special!’

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, a seasoned music hall and variety aficionado, announced that the 1968 Performance was one of the best ever. Des O’Connor, Engelbert Humperdinck and Petula Clark all played their part, and former Supreme Diana Ross used the occasion to make a moving tribute to Martin Luther King, whose tragic assassination had rocked the world earlier that year.

By the 1970s the RVP had really got into its stride, pulling the crowds in with line-ups that positively glittered with stardom; national treasures like Ronnie Corbett and Elton John rubbed shoulders with international sensations including the Jackson Five, Carol Channing and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

A rather risque sketch from the popular BBC TV comedy ‘Till Death Us Do Part’ found its way onto the 1972 bill, much to the consternation of a public keen to protect their delicate Royals. In the event, all went smoothly on the night and a rather harried Bernard Delfont reported afterwards that the Queen Mother had said ‘Well, that wasn’t too bad, was it?’ with evident relief.

1974 was the year in which the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund became the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (EABF), allowing a wider cross-section of showbusiness to fall under the charity’s protective net. The use of ’Crossroads’ star Noele Gordon as the show’s first ever female host was an additional landmark for that year.

In 1976, after 16 years of pre-recorded broadcasts, the Royal Variety Performance took a nervewracking leap into the world of live television.

The long-suffering Bernard Delfont wearily recalls the poltergeist-level disruptions that beset that year’s show, including falling microphones, power outages and a persistent sound fault that rendered poor Mike Yarwood’s voice practically inaudible over a deafening orchestra. After two years in which to retreat and lick their wounds, the organisers braved the live format once again in 1978. Although all went well, the experience and the potential for embarrassment and disaster were deemed overall too stressful to make it worthwhile, and the show has wisely been pre-recorded ever since.

In 1979, a no doubt grey-haired Lord Delfont passed the organisational baton to Louis Benjamin, highly qualified by dint of his position as managing director of Associated Television, chairman of Stoll Moss Theatres and life governor of the EABF. The show was held at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane for the

The 1980 Performance marked Her Majesty the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday, and as such was a nod to all the variety show greats of the last 50 years who had kept the Queen entertained throughout her reign.

1981 saw another innovation, stimulated by the need to counter the mounting costs of staging the show. For the first time, sponsorship was introduced to offset the unavoidable production costs and as a less contentious alternative to raising seat prices. Louis Benjamin also alleviated the financial problem by selling advertising spots in the Performance programme, and re-negotiated screening fees in the

In 1983 the Royal Variety Show was delighted to have the legendary American dancer and actor, Gene Kelly as its host at the Theatre Royal in the presence

of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The spectacular show included legendary ballet dancer Wayne Sleep, Laurence Olivier, Michael Barrymore and Les Dawson.

1986 was the BBC’s 50th anniversary, so in a fitting tribute this was the year the company produced and presented the show. From then until 2010, broadcasting and production alternated each year between the BBC and ITV.

ITV contractor London Weekend Television staged the Performance in 1987 and a galactic cast included Stephen Fry, Sarah Brightman and Tom Jones.

Two breaks from tradition followed a few years later. The 1990 Royal Variety Performance, staged by the BBC, was billed as Queen Elizabeth’s ‘Royal Birthday Gala’ and took place in July in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Margaret, Countess

of Snowdon. Roger Moore, Sir John Gielgud and the Band of the Grenadier Guards all made an appearance. The following year, a performance of the musical ‘Miss Saigon’ was put on for the show at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane.

After this, the Royal Variety Performance was held in London’s Dominion Theatre for the next five years with a roster of household favourites such as Lulu, Cilla Black and Tom Jones.

American rabbi-turned-comedian Jackie Mason vastly outstayed his allotted stage time, the adulation he was receiving seeming to blind him to the TV monitor mounted on the theatre’s circle flashing ‘GET. OFF. NOW!’ at him in large red letters.

Since 2008, Simon Cowell’s hugely successful ITV show, ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ has generously donated a proportion of the money raised from viewers’ telephone votes to the Royal Variety Charity. In return, the Royal Variety Charity arranges for the series winner of the talent show to be awarded with the much-coveted prize of a spot on that year’s Royal Variety Performance. The first winner to perform was opera singer Paul Potts, followed by the incredible 14-year-old street dancer George Sampson, then the ten-strong dance troupe, Diversity. Gymnastic group Spelbound wowed the audience the following year, followed by Scottish singer Jai McDowall in 2011, Ashleigh and Pudsey in 2012, Hungarian shadow dancers Attraction in 2013, Collabro in 2014 and Jules, Matisse & Friends in 2015. In February 2011, the Royal Variety Charity awarded exclusive broadcasting and production rights of the show to ITV1 for the next ten years, securing the future of this great entertainment institution and further strengthening the Charity’slinks with the country’s most prominent commercial broadcaster.

The year 2012, saw a very special production of the Royal Variety Performance to mark its centenary year. The event was staged at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. A spectacular international line-up was presented that included, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Placido Domingo, Bill Bailey, One Direction, Girls Aloud, David Walliams, Rod Stewart, Andrea Bocelli and Neil Diamond, The 100th anniversary evening was celebrated in style with a further fundraising event at a lavish aftershow banquet at the Hilton Hotel on London’s Park Lane. This one evening of entertainment raised over £700,000 for the charity.

The Royal Variety Performance has been hosted by many cities outside London, in its lifetime, including Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Blackpool and Manchester.

2014 was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the first time and was held at the London Palladium. It included a glittering cast including host Michael McIntyre, Bette Midler, Shirley Bassey, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Golding and One Direction.

On 26th June 2015, the Executive Committee of the EABF met for an historic Annual General Meeting. Chairman Giles Cooper had previously gained

approval from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office to change the name of the charity from the EABF to the Royal Variety Charity and Buckingham Palace and the Cabinet Office followed by awarding the charity the honour of official use of the title ‘Royal’ within the charity’s name. The Executive Committee subsequently voted on that day to change the name of the charity with immediate effect.

The 2015 Royal Variety Performance was staged for only the second time at the Royal Albert Hall and marked another first, with the attendance of HRH Prince Harry for his first time. Security was tight for the ever-popular Prince and it got even tighter as the night progressed and news of the numerous terrorist bombs in Paris spread amongst the security services. The show was led by its youngest ever host at 29 years old, Jack Whitehall, who introduced acts including the debut return of Jeff Lynne’s ELO, together with Little Mix, Brandon Flowers from the Killers, Ricky Martin and Sir Elton John. A highlight included a magical show stopping moment from the cast of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s multi-award winning musical Mary Poppins, when Mary flew to the stage suspended by a zip-wire stretching the entire length of the Albert Hall! However, a surprise addition from the relatively unknown cast of the Play That Goes Wrong, for many stole the show, and included some surprise star cameos including participation from Kylie Minogue, Josh Groban and Jack Whitehall!

The 2016 show returned to London’s Hammersmith Apollo for only the second time in its history and was attended by TRH, Charles The Prince of Wales and Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall. Hosted by David Walliams, highlights included Lady GaGa, Sting, Robbie Williams, Gary Barlow and Barry Gibb. The Royal Variety Charity then staged its official aftershow party and banquet at Grosvenor House on Park Lane for the

In 2017, the show returned to the London Palladium and welcomed back the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge for a night of spectacular entertainment hosted by Miranda Hart.

The Royal Variety Performance 2018 was ‘a first’ on many fronts. The show was staged at the London Palladium exactly six months (to the day) following the marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended their first Royal Variety Performance together on 19th November 2018. Her Royal Highness was pregnant with the Royal couple’s first child and huge crowds gathered outside the Palladium, on a wet and windy November night to

catch a glimpse of the Royal arrival. The show included the Invictus Games Choir singing the national anthem, the original West-End cast of Hamilton, where the original stage set had been flown in from New York’s Broadway the previous week and the cellist from the Royal Wedding Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

2019 continued the run of spectacular shows, this time with the hugely supportive Duke and Duchess of Cambridge back in attendance. Emile Sande & the Bee Vocal Choir provided a very emotional rendition of ‘You Are Not Alone’, to highlight the plight of mental health and the new Mary Poppins musical made the Duchess remark that the young Prince George and Princess Charlotte had wished they could attend the performance, but alas, it was way past their bedtime! Robbie Williams performed twice, the second time replacing Sir Rod Stewart who had unfortunately fallen ill with a throat infection on the morning of the show.

2020 brought with it the onslaught of the Covid pandemic and therefore proved one of the most challenging in Royal Variety history. The show was staged at the spectacular Royal Opera House Winter Gardens in Blackpool with host Jason Manford. However, lockdown restrictions meant that the show had to be without a physical audience in the theatre. Instead, it was streamed virtually to an invited audience of charity supporters and Blackpool’s

NHS and key workers. LED TV screens were placed in each of the stalls seats, so the performers could see the faces and reactions of their virtual audience! HRH Charles, The Prince of Wales made an impassioned video message in support of the Royal Variety Charity and thanked all of the performers for taking part in the fundraising extravaganza during such an awful year for the entertainment industry. A particular highlight was the inclusion of Captain Sir Tom Moore who performed his No. 1 Hit, with Michael Ball OBE and the NHS Choir. As always, the show was broadcast on television throughout the world over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

In 2021, the Royal Variety returned to the Royal Albert Hall for a stunning show hosted by Alan Carr. Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a diverse variety bill, opened by Baz Luhrmann’s spectacular Moulin Rouge and ending with Ed Sheeran performing two songs exclusively for the Royal Variety.

The 2022 show was attended by TRH The Earl & Countess of Wessex for the first time and was staged as tribute to Her Late Majesty The Queen, Patron of the Royal Variety Charity for 70 years.

Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales were our Royal guests of honour in 2023 and were accompanied in the Royal Box by The Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden. Hosted by the fabulous Bradley Walsh, it was a record-breaking night, raising over £1M for the Royal Variety Charity, and featuring stand-out performances from Hannah Waddingham, Lang Lang, Cher and a spectacular medley celebrating 100 years of Disney musicals.

The 2024 show was honoured to welcome His Majesty The King as its guest of honour and whilst he had attended the show on 16 previous occasions, this was his first as Patron of the Royal Variety Charity. Regretfully, Her Majesty The Queen was unable to attend due to a nasty chest infection. Hosted by the wonderful duo of Amanda Holden and Alan Carr, highlights included Sir Elton John introducing the Devil Wears Prada musical, the outstanding cast of Oliver starring Simon Lipkin, and a poignant and emotional finale led by Marti Pellow and an arrany of stars from stage and screen in Lorraine Kelly’s ‘Change and Check Choir’ to raise awareness of early detection of breast cancer.
