LAURIE MANSFIELD, HON. LIFE-PRESIDENT Dawn of a new era…

‘‘

elcome and thank you for your support this evening. Tonight is the culmination of a very special year for us at the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund and in more than one way marks the start of a brand new era for the charity.

In February, we announced the signing of an exclusive, ten-year broadcasting and production contract with ITV and this evening’s Royal Variety Performance is the first show of those ten and will, I am sure, be the start of a very successful and fruitful relationship with the TV broadcaster.

It was certainly the right choice for us in terms of the long-term interests of our charity; not just financially, but also with regards to television production. The leaps forward that ITV have made in recent years in the arena of ‘live event’ broadcasting have been ground-breaking and their production of live shows such as The Brits, X-Factor, Dancing On Ice and Britain’s Got Talent, are second to none. Granting ITV this exclusivity allows their producers and directors a longer term vision to develop and improve the show’s production year-on-year, ensuring that the Royal Variety remains one of the main TV events of the entertainment calendar. For the EABF and, in particular, all of our dependants at Brinsworth House, it provides a term of security as we all make our way through these very uncertain and difficult times. It also, of course, strengthens our existing relationship with Britain’s Got Talent; the winning prize being for the series winner to appear on this, our annual fundraiser. I would like to thank Peter Fincham, Elaine Bedell, John Kaye Cooper, Lee Connolly and Fiona Clark from ITV, for all of their hard work in producing this year’s performance. This evening also celebrates a new era for us in terms of the management and organisation of the EABF and let me be the first to congratulate our new Chairman, Giles Cooper, on his first full year in office. Giles has not only worked very hard on this evening’s Royal Variety, but he has also led the EABF through a year of great change and has instigated many programs and initiatives that have brought the EABF into the 21st century, whilst still being sensitive to the wonderful history and heritage of this 103 year old charity. Not the easiest of tasks! Our Executive Committee and its various sub-committees, together with our new, fresh board of Trustees comprise a breadth and diversity of characters and experience; all contributing to these revolutionary changes and new found efficiency. It has been an honour to chair this new team

of Trustees and I would like to thank them all individually; thank you to Giles, Phil Dale, James Jones, Ray Greenwood and Peter Prichard OBE, and, indeed, to all of our Management Body for working so well together this year. As a result, the future is looking that little bit brighter for all those entertainers who need help from the Fund over the coming years. I would also like to thank our Matron at Brinsworth House, Sheila Gould RGN, who continues to do such a wonderful job looking after our many residents in our residential nursing home in Twickenham. I would particularly like to thank the Royal Family for their continued support and, in particular this year, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. Their presence at this event is hugely appreciated.

‘‘

Lastly, I wish you a very happy evening. Thank you so much for your support and please enjoy the show.

GILES COOPER, HON. CHAIRMAN

‘‘

t is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 84th Royal Variety Performance, held in these fantastic facilities at the Lowry.

Despite it being just over a year, it feels like yesterday that I was elected Chairman of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund; the organisers and beneficiaries of this evening’s very special, annual show. It’s a great privilege to lead this wonderful charity, with its Royal patronage and very colourful 103 year history and over the past year we have made enormous progress in modernising the way that we govern and operate the Fund, ultimately enabling us to help many more sick, elderly and impoverished entertainers across the UK more efficiently than we ever have before. It has also been a very special year for us as a charity, as we celebrate 100 years of Brinsworth House, our dedicated nursing home in Twickenham, Middlesex. I would like to thank my fellow Trustees and all of the members of our Executive Committee for their fantastic contribution and support over the year and I would particularly like to thank our Life-President, Laurie Mansfield, for his invaluable, almost daily, help and advice. Special thanks must also go to two of the Fund’s most loyal and ardent supporters, Stuart Littlewood and Frank Carson, both of whom have played an enormous role in the amount of money raised this evening from ticket sales.

The Royal Variety Performance has quite rightly become one of the most prestigious and most well-known of British institutions; the diversity of legendary acts over the years is truly breath-taking and its worldwide TV audience, combined with its 99 year history has made it the most successful and longest running show on earth. However, it’s been a real eye-opener realising first-hand the amount of hard work that goes into this annual Royal event; there’s no other show on the planet that involves liaising with such a cross section of society and such a diversity of people and professions as the Royal Variety; it really is a small miracle how it all comes together on the night. I would like to thank Captain Nick Wright and Natasha Taylor at Buckingham Palace, Neil and Rob from the Security Services, the Rev. Canon Paul Denby JP from the Lord Lieutenant’s office and Sally Anderson and Tony Smith from The Lowry. I would also especially like to thank Carol Fowler and Lorraine Crowther in our events team at the EABF and also my PA, Cathryn Tomlinson, for their consistent hard work, devotion and dedication over an entire year, leading up to this evening’s performance.

PAGE 18 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2011

On behalf of the EABF, I would also like to extend our utmost gratitude to the dozens of people from ITV who have worked so hard in producing this evening’s show, with particular thanks to Lee Connolly, Fiona Clark, Christian Fletcher and Amanda George for their unfaltering energy and creativity. In addition, many thanks to Simon Cowell and all at Syco Television for the continued support of Britain’s Got Talent; which generously donates a large proportion of the money raised from viewers’ telephone votes to the EABF, each year. Most importantly, I would like to offer my personal and most heartfelt thanks to our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, for her unwavering and continued support of the EABF and I would also, of course, like to offer our very warmest welcome this evening, to Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and to Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. Lastly, but by no means least, on behalf of all at the EABF, a very big thank you to all of the acts performing in tonight’s Royal Command; all of whom have given their services free of charge.

‘‘

The stage is now set. Please sit back and relax and enjoy what will undoubtedly be a fantastic night of entertainment.

‘‘

t continues to be such a privilege to be actively involved with, not only this great and traditional annual performance, but even more so with its beneficiary, the EABF; allowing us to continue our much needed work at Brinsworth House.

Due to your generosity and the generosity of the artistes, sponsors and ITV, we have been in the enviable position of being able to organise a number of improvements at Brinsworth House over the years, bringing it up to the most modern of standards. The registered care home accommodates 36 residents, who are personally taken care of by the finest of nurses and care assistants and it is so heart-warming to see them enjoying these wonderful facilities and especially experiencing their delight when they are visited and entertained by today's excellent performers throughout the year.

‘‘

We are so proud to be closely involved with such a wonderful charity and we are richly rewarded for our trouble by the very simple joy of seeing these once so-active and talented ‘old pros’ living in the comfort they deserve and most importantly seeing them safe and with a smile on their faces. On behalf of the EABF I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support! Phil Dale Hon. Vice-Chairman

‘‘

am privileged and proud to have been recently appointed Honorary Treasurer of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund and I am looking forward to working hard to justify the faith placed in me by the Hon. Life-President and the Hon. Chairman.

Quite naturally, the current challenging financial environment is a cause for grave concern to those of us who work for charitable causes; it is now harder than ever to survive in the present and plan with confidence for the future. The EABF cares for hundreds of entertainers throughout the UK who need help and assistance as a result of old age, ill-health or simply hard times and we at the Fund are eternally and humbly grateful for your support in this difficult climate. With responsibility for 36 residents at Brinsworth House and many others supported in various ways in their own homes throughout the UK, it is a constant uphill struggle to raise sufficient funds to maintain the superior levels of care and guardianship for which we are renowned.

‘‘

Please help us to maintain our invaluable work by donating at www.eabf.og.uk/donate - each and every penny really does count. Thank you so much for your support. Ian Freeman Hon. Treasurer

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE F

ew entertainment industry institutions have attracted as much attention, d i s c u ss i o n a n d , o cca s i o n a l ly , controversy as has the annual Royal Variety Performance.

The 99-year history of this internationally-recognised show chronicles not only the best of light entertainment, but equally provides a potted history of Britain itself – its tastes in music and humour and the ups and downs of its people in war-time and peace-time, as well as giving us a unique insight into the lives and loves – showbusiness-wise, of course - of the royal family.

The quality and diversity of performers over the years is extraordinary... from Elgar to Pavarotti, from The Beatles to Take That, from Laurel & Hardy to Morecambe & Wise, from Aretha Franklin to Leona Lewis, from Sammy Davis Jnr. to Michael Jackson, from Liberace to Sir Elton John, from Tommy Cooper to Harry Hill, from Shirley Bassey to Lady Gaga... the list of legendary performers is breathtaking and endless.

The first Royal Variety Performance – or ‘Music Hall Command Performance’ as it was known that year - was staged on 1st July 1912 in the presence of His Majesty King George V and Her Majesty Queen Mary at the Palace Theatre in London. Who would have imagined that it would be, almost 100 years later, one of the most watched shows in the world - the 2010 Royal Variety Performance was seen by a TV audience in excess of 150 million people. In Norway, for example, it’s a New Year tradition – the show is broadcast at midnight every January 1st! The first show should actually have been held a year earlier in Edinburgh to coincide with the coronation of George V, but the theatre where it was to be staged had burned down a few weeks earlier resulting in several deaths. For the 1912 show, to aid the Variety Artistes' Benevolent Fund (the previous name of the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund) and the Fund’s care home for entertainers in Twickenham, west London, Brinsworth House, the theatre was decorated with three million roses draped around the auditorium and continued > > > over the boxes. HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

> > > In a letter to the organisers, William

Carington, of Buckingham Palace’s Privy Purse Office, said “The King and Queen will be obliged by your assuring the Artistes who were on the Stage that Their Majesties thoroughly appreciated their talent, so equal in excellence and varied in style”. Among the performers were the male impersonator Vesta Tilley – the Queen covered her eyes with her programme at the sight of a woman dressed in trousers – comedian Little Tich and legendary Scottish singer Harry Lauder. Those who complain that today’s Royal Variety Performances are too long, take note – the 1912 show featured 142 artistes!

The second Royal show was the first to be billed a ‘Royal Variety Performance’. Held at the London Coliseum on 28th July 1919, the show was staged as a ‘celebration of peace’ and, as the official announcement expressed it; Featuring Australian aerialists The Flying Banvards, French clown Grock and comedian Harry Tate, the orchestra was conducted by Sir Edward Elgar. PAGE 26 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2011

In 1921, His Majesty King George V agreed to become Life Patron of the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund – the start of an unbroken line of royal patronage which continues to the present day – and from that year the show became an annual event. The King decreed, after the show, that 'the Monarch, or a representative of the Monarch, would attend an annual performance in aid of Brinsworth House and the Variety Artistes' Benevolent Fund, once a year thereafter'. By 1923 the show had become established as a major entertainment event and tickets sold out as quickly as they were placed on sale. It was decided, in 1926, that the Royal Variety Performance would be broadcast on BBC radio, in order to bring it to a wider audience. Held at the Alhambra Theatre, on the site of what is now the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square, all the performers were making their Royal Variety debut. The theatre which was to become the show’s spiritual home, the London Palladium, played host for the first time in 1930, a year which saw an everincreasing involvement by the BBC. Apart from broadcasting the show, one of the first BBC radio ‘stars’, the eccentric monologist Gillie Potter, was a huge hit with the audience and especially with the Queen, who was seen to be ‘literally rocking with laughter’ during his act. Jack Payne and his BBC Dance Band closed the show.

In the first few years of the 1930s, many names still recognised today as being at the top of the variety profession took part in the Royal Variety Performance including Max Wall, Gracie Fields, Max Miller, Cicely Courtneidge and Will Hay. The 1932 show, though, has a special place in history as it saw debut performances by six comedians who were later to form the most famous comedy troupe in British entertainment history, the Crazy Gang – Bud Flanagan and Chesney Allen, Jimmy Nervo and Teddy Knox and Charlie Naughton and Jimmy Gold.

1912

The 1935 performance, in the Silver Jubilee year of His Majesty King George V and Her Majesty Queen Mary, was, understandably, a sell-out, with applications for tickets flooding in from all over the world. The bill featured Stanley Holloway, Jessie Matthews, Sandy Powell and the Harry Roy Band, and the show proved an fitting finale to the great support that His Majesty King George V had given to the variety profession. The 1935 Royal Variety Performance sadly proved to be his last – he died a few months later, leaving the royal patronage of the Fund to live on in his heirs and successors. After a one-year hiatus, the Royal Variety Performance returned with a flourish in 1937, once again at the London Palladium but this time before His Majesty King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, who attended their first Royal Variety Performance as monarchs. It was generally agreed that the risqué (for those days) comedian Max Miller ‘stopped the show’ that night. The 1938 Royal Variety Performance, held at the London Coliseum for the first time in ten years, was to be the last until 1945. The finale of the show, involving around 250 artistes, was the biggest ever for the Royal Variety Performance and seemed an appropriate, if unintentional, grand finale before the grim and desperate war years that were, unexpectedly, to follow.

The 1945 show was billed as the ‘Victory Royal Variety Performance’. Hosted by Tommy Trinder and starring Sid Field, Vic Oliver and skating virtuosos The Nine Avalons, it became not so much a variety show but more a patriotic celebration. The show was also noted for being the first to be directed by the spruce, suave Robert Nesbitt, who was eventually to take no fewer than 25 Royal Variety Performances under his wing. Attending along with the King and Queen were the two young princesses, Elizabeth, then aged 19, and Margaret Rose, who was 15. continued

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE continued > > > Although it seems unlikely to happen again in these days where talent is globally recognised, Val Parnell, who presented the 1947 Royal Variety Show, came in for some criticism for including several big-name overseas acts at the expense of less well-known, home-grown talent. To his critics, he commented “We try to show off the variety business to their Majesties to the best possible advantage. We cannot afford, when people are paying ten guineas [£10.50] a seat, to experiment too much.”

The Royal Variety Performance continued to grow in stature during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The 1948 show was ‘stolen’ by the 13 year-old Julie Andrews who followed up her solo spot by standing on a chair to sing the National Anthem at the finale. In 1949, the hit performance was by eccentric comedian (and, later, Goon) Michael Bentine, and the 1951 show saw the first performance by what was now billed as The Crazy Gang, although the individual performers in this knockabout comedy troupe had served as Royal Variety regulars since 1932. In 1952, much was expected of the Royal Variety Performance, being, as it was, the first of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's reign. “This is the best show of all” was Her Majesty’s verdict on the programme, which included a number of artistes making their royal debut, among them the Beverley Sisters, singer Ian Wallace, and zany comedian Norman Wisdom. Tony Hancock was a particular hit with the Duke of Edinburgh in his sketch featuring a lieutenantcommander in the Royal Navy and a surprise addition to the bill was French singer Maurice Chevalier. In 1953, with the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh due shortly to tour the Commonwealth, the show’s finale was filled with citizens of member countries around the world, including Australian tennis players and cricketers, lifesavers and servicemen and civilians from New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Bermuda. There had always been concerns that Royal Variety audiences were ‘sitting on their hands’ – not applauding or enjoying themselves as much as they would at a normal show due to the presence of royalty. In 1951 it was decided that The Crazy Gang would ‘warm up’ the audience in advance of the arrival of the royal party and this had proved a huge success. In 1954, to the audience’s delight and roars of laughter, they walked in and out of the royal box dressed as cleaners and sold ice cream in the auditorium. In 1955, two Royal Variety Performances took place. The first, at the Opera House, Blackpool, in April, featured many acts familiar to local audiences, including Tower organist Reginald Dixon, comic double-act Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warriss, George Formby, Arthur Askey and a couple of young comedians by the name of continued > > > Morecambe and Wise. HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE continued

> > > The 1955 London audience watched Benny Hill, Lena Horne and Jimmy Edwards, along with debut Royal Variety performances by American heart-throb singer Johnnie Ray and comedian Dave King. The year also marked the creation of Independent Television, the new commercial broadcaster, which made a bid to televise the show. The offer was refused, on the grounds that television may put the well-being of variety theatres all over the country in jeopardy!

The 1958 show at the Coliseum theatre marked the first of the long-running series of Bernard Delfont/Robert Nesbitt productions with a large and impressive cast. Delfont decided to make several changes, not all of them popular. He cut back on the long-established British acts, and on imported American artistes – settling just for crooner Pat Boone and husky-voiced vamp Eartha Kitt – and brought in newer talent such as Roy Castle, Max Bygraves, Tony Hancock, Julie Andrews, Norman Wisdom and magician David Nixon. The press seized on the omission of The Crazy Gang from the bill and rounded furiously on Delfont.

Perhaps it was just as well that 1955 had two Royal Variety Performances, for the 1956 one has gone down in history as the show that never was. Four hours before curtain-up, the producer Val Parnell informed the cast at rehearsals that he had just heard from Buckingham Palace that the mounting Suez Canal crisis meant that, at that very moment, British troops were landing in Port Said, Egypt and Her Majesty naturally felt it inappropriate to attend. The show was to be cancelled.

The Royal Variety Performance was held, for the first time, in Manchester in 1959.

There was widespread disappointment amongst the cast. Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh and John Mills were on the bill. American piano virtuoso Liberace broke down on the stage in tears. It was the Cockney comedian Jimmy Wheeler who restored flagging spirits when he took out his violin and announced, "I've rehearsed this bloody act for a fortnight so somebody's going to hear it!", and promptly went into his full routine, adding several gags that would never have found their way into the show proper!

Staged at the Palace Theatre, the show featured Liberace, Tommy Trinder, wry comic Al Read and, as part of a sequence based on TV pop show ‘Oh Boy!’, an 18 year-old Cliff Richard. Top of the bill was the city’s famous Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Sir John Barbirolli.

The 1960 Royal Variety Performance was the first to be televised and will probably always be remembered as the Sammy Davis Junior's show. “In eight electrifying minutes”, wrote the Daily Sketch, “this entertainer made the word 'star' seem inadequate”. continued

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

> > > In 1963, Beatlemania came to the Royal Variety Performance. The Beatles attracted ecstatic fans outside the Prince of Wales theatre and throughout the Sunday rehearsals the noise of the throng could be heard by the artistes on stage. It was necessary to construct a screened passageway between the theatre and the hotel next door, where the Beatles were staying, in order to get them in and out without being seen.

continued

The hoards of fans obviously affected the other artistes on the bill and Marlene Dietrich made a point of always being in evidence when the photographers were around!

On the night itself, the Beatles took the show by storm and John Lennon passed into Royal Variety history when he made his celebrated suggestion that the audience in the cheap seats should clap their hands; the rest could just rattle their jewellery. A quartet of comedy talent – Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers – were big hits at the 1965 Royal Variety Performance, now back at the London Palladium, which also featured Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Tony Bennett and French rock legend Johnny Hallyday. PAGE 32 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2011

The entire English football team took to the stage after their World Cup triumph in 1966, while French singer Gilbert Becaud was forced to watch the show from the stalls as he had lost his voice. The 1967 show featured a raft of female entertainers, following complaints of a lack of them the previous year – The Bluebell Girls, Sandie Shaw, Lulu and Vikki Carr were among those featured. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, a seasoned connoisseur of music hall and variety, hailed the 1968 Royal Variety Performance as one of the best ever. Prince Charles and Princess Anne joined their grandmother in the royal box and enjoyed a bill which included Des O’Connor, Arthur Askey, Englebert Humperdinck and Petula Clark. American singer and former Supreme, Diana Ross, used the occasion to make a moving tribute to black civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, who had been so tragically assassinated earlier in the year. The roster of Royal Variety performers in the early 1970s read, simply, like a list of the greatest entertainers from around the world – top British names such as Ronnie Corbett, Vera Lynn and Elton John shared the bill, and, often, a dressing room, with the likes of the Jackson Five, Carol Channing and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

In 1972, Bernard Delfont took a calculated chance by including in the show a sketch by the cast of the BBC TV comedy ‘Till Death Us Do Part’. The gritty situation comedy had a reputation for robust language and Delfont’s post-bag was filled with protests once the announcement was made. “I spoke to Johnny Speight, the writer and creator of ‘Till Death”, says Delfont in his autobiography, East End, West End. “I went over his script so many times… I let through a couple of bloodys. Afterwards, the Queen Mother said to me ‘Well, that wasn’t too bad, was it?’ I think she was a bit relieved.”

In 1974, the show's organisers and beneficiaries, the Variety Artistes' Benevolent Fund, changed its name to the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund, to broaden its criteria of help enabling it to offer support across entertainment. The year also marked another first in the show's history, by having a female host for the first time, musical theatre doyenne and star of television’s ‘Crossroads’ soap opera, Noele Gordon.

In 1976, after 16 years of recorded television broadcasts, the Royal Variety Performance was broadcast live on television for the first time. “Disaster followed us at every turn”, recalls Bernard Delfont in his book. “A mic was knocked flat in the opening number, the lights went out on ventriloquist Roger de Courcey…and a sound fault allowed the orchestra to drown out the voice of Mike Yarwood.” The show was once again live on TV two years later. All was well, but, says Delfont, “…we only had to reflect on what could have gone wrong to decide, never again.” The show has not been broadcast live since. In 1979, Lord Delfont handed over the organising and presentation of the Royal Variety Performance to Louis Benjamin, who was joint managing director of Associated Television, chairman of Stoll Moss Theatres and a life governor of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund. The show was held at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane for the first time in its history. 1980 had particular significance as it marked Her Majesty the Queen Mother's 80th birthday. It was devised as a salute to Her Majesty by presenting a programme that spanned and reflected the very best in the field of light entertainment, from a nostalgic look back to the 1930's to the exciting tempo of the 1980's. continued

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2011 | PAGE 33

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE continued > > > 1981 saw another innovation, stimulated by the need to counter the mounting costs of staging the Royal Variety Performance. For the first time, sponsorship was introduced, to pare down the unavoidable and ever-increasing production costs, as a prudent and acceptable alternative to increasing seat prices. Louis Benjamin also introduced advertising in the brochure and re-negotiated television fees, both in the UK and overseas.

The 50th anniversary of BBC television fell in 1986, so it was appropriate that this was the year the broadcaster produced and presented the show. From then on, broadcasting and production of the annual Royal Variety Performance alternated each year between the BBC and ITV, until 2010. The ITV contractor London Weekend Television staged the show in 1987 and stars included host Anthony Newley, Stephen Fry, Sarah Brightman and Tom Jones.

Two breaks from tradition followed a few years later. The 1990 Royal Variety Performance, staged by the BBC, was billed as ‘A Royal Birthday Gala’ and took place in July in the presence of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon to celebrate the Queen Mother’s 90th birthday. Stars included Sir John and Hayley Mills, Roger Moore, Sir John Gielgud and the Band of the Grenadier Guards. PAGE 34 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2011

The following year, Cameron Mackintosh staged a performance of the musical ‘Miss Saigon’ at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, also in the presence of The Queen Mother. The show moved to London’s Dominion theatre for the next five years, with stars such as Lulu, Cilla Black, Tom Jones, Tony Bennett and American rabbiturned-comedian Jackie Mason, who, after staying well over his allotted time, seemed only to hear the roars of laughter he was receiving while failing to notice the TV monitor mounted on the theatre’s circle flashing ‘GET. OFF. NOW!’ in large, red letters!

The Royal Variety Performance has been hosted by many cities throughout the UK, outside of London, including Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Blackpool and now, once again, in Manchester. Since 2008, Simon Cowell’s hugely successful ITV show, 'Britain's Got Talent', generously donates a large proportion of the money raised from viewer's telephone votes to the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund. In return, the EABF arranges that the series winner of the show is awarded a coveted spot on the annual Royal Variety Performance. The first winner was singer Paul Potts, followed by the incredible 14 year old street dancer George Sampson, then the ten strong dance troupe, Diversity, and last year the thirteen amazing gymnasts Spelbound. This year sees the debut of the 2011 winner, Scottish operatic vocalist Jai McDowell. In February 2011, the E.A.B.F. awarded to ITV1 exclusive broadcast and production rights for the Royal Variety Performance for ten years, thus ensuring the future of this great entertainment institution until at least 2021 and further strengthening the Fund’s links with the country’s most prominent commercial broadcaster. As we look forward to next year, in which we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Variety Performance, we at the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund, along with our friends and colleagues at ITV and everyone associated with the staging of this unique show, will strive to ensure that this great entertainment institution will continue to thrill and delight world-wide audiences. Your support enables us to provide, a safe, peaceful and happy environment for our Brinsworth House residents, and financial assistance for our beneficiaries all over the UK, at a time of their life when they most need and, indeed, deserve it. For that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

YOUR HOST

PETER KAY eter Kay’s rise in the world of comedy has been phenomenal and is now well regarded as one of Britain’s best loved comedians. He holds the record of the highest selling live standup comedy DVD of all time and is still one of the UK’s most prolific stand-up comedians. His most recent tour, ‘The Tour That Didn’t Tour Tour’ has just entered the record books as the biggest selling comedy tour of all time; playing to over 1.2 million people. He’s won numerous awards for his television work including five British Comedy Awards, five Royal Television Society awards, the Rose d’Or at the International Television Festival at Montreux for best actor as well as a special BAFTA award and Emmy nomination for his television special ‘Britain’s Got the Pop Factor’.

Tonight will be Peter’s fourth appearance at The Royal Variety Performance and his second time as host. “I grew up watching the Royal Variety Performance every year so to be asked back for a second time to host is a huge honour, so I must have done something right the first time, either that, or it’s because I can see my house from the roof. Whatever the reason, it’s going to be an unforgettable night”.

He also wrote, directed and starred in ‘That Peter Kay Thing’, the BAFTA winning‘Phoenix Nights’ and ‘Max & Paddy’s Road to Nowhere’. He’s had a total of four Number 1 hit singles in aid of charity, a special animated song for Children In Need and ‘(Is This the Way To) Amarillo?’ for Comic Relief. But it’s as a writer that Peter’s humour has been widely celebrated with three self penned books, including ‘The Sound of Laughter’, which still holds the record as the biggest-selling British hardback autobiography since records began.

THE TRUMPETERS OF THE HEAVY CAVALRY AND CAMBRAI BAND

2011

The Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band is one of 23 military bands in the Corps of Army Music and is based in Catterick, North Yorkshire. They perform many varieties of music within their ensembles for both military and civilian engagements across the British Isles and many other countries around the World. The Band was formed on the 1st June 2006 and has an establishment of 35. From this they provide the Fanfare Team who will perform tonight’s fanfare, as well as a Concert Band, Display and Marching Band, Dance Band and other small and diverse musical combinations.

DRUMMING ENSEMBLE STOMP STOMP was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1991 and is now celebrating 20 years of phenomenal success. Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas had collaborated as street performers and musicians for over 10 years before taking the show to the Edinburgh Festival. It was in 1992, however, after a string of festival appearances in Australia that STOMP really took off. In 1994 the show debuted in New York and has been filling the Orpheum Theatre ever since. The West End production opened its doors in 2002 and with multiple companies still touring the world, STOMP has become an international sensation. Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas are the creative directors for this opening performance.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF

BRINSWORTH HOUSE

‘‘

W

hat a privilege it is to be able to tell you about our lives at Brinsworth House. Unfortunately, these days, all we seem to hear about from the media are terrible stories of neglect, both in hospitals and care homes - such a sad reflection on nursing today. ‘Coming into care’ is a frightening and worrying experience, coupled with the fact that everything you’ve ever known will change forever, your day to day life reliant on others - it’s daunting. There is a warmth and a friendly feeling everyone seems to notice when arriving at Brinsworth. The house is 180 years old, mellow and welcoming. Show posters adorn the hall and staircases and there are scintillating aromas wafting out from the kitchen. There is also a small intimate theatre bar where residents and their friends and family can gather. It is a truly bustling place, always something going on: visitors coming to lunch (small charge), musical movements, quizzes, a bi-weekly hairdressing service and bingo, of course. Art therapy and handicrafts, film shows, Pet Therapy dogs, along with our fortnightly shows performed on the stage and spontaneous piano performances by some of our residents are also part of life at Brinsworth. We have close links with our local junior and infant schools just across the road that come and visit the residents at Christmas and Harvest Festival times and during Book Week, when the children choose a book and come and read to the residents. For peace and quiet there are always the gardens in summer and the conservatory in which to read the paper. The residents have their own parties, one in the summer and one at Christmas, where they can invite their friends and relatives. PAGE 52 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2011

BRINSWORTH HOUSE 1911 - 2011 Celebrating 100 years of care for members of the entertainment profession

With regards to the staff at Brinsworth, there is my deputy, Mrs Muriel De Silva, always known as Nurse Muriel. She oversees the day to day care of the residents together with her dedicated team of registered nurses and health care assistants. Our staff receive full and continuous training, with most of the courses held at Brinsworth. Henry, our chef, ensures that everyone’s dietary needs are met. Homemade soups, locally sourced meat, fish, fruit and vegetables are all delivered fresh each day to give the residents a varied and nutritious menu. The staffing levels are high; most of my staff have been with me for the majority of my 24 years at the Home. We do not use agencies and retired staff stay on the bank to help out when needed so our residents receive the continuity of care they deserve - 58 staff and 36 residents, not a bad ratio. The maintenance staff ensure that the fabric of the Home is well maintained and life at Brinsworth continues to run smoothly and our residents are kept safe and comfortable. We have an ‘open door’ policy and relatives and friends can always see me or a senior nurse to allay worries and fears. The rapport we have with relatives and next of kin is very important to us and hopefully makes them feel they can trust us with the care of their loved ones.

‘‘

None of this could happen if it wasn’t for the Trustees and Executive Committee of the EABF, who work tirelessly to raise the income needed to support Brinsworth House. The residents and staff of Brinsworth have asked me to say a special thank you to you all on their behalf. They are grateful for your support and hope you have a wonderful evening.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF

BRINSWORTH HOUSE he idea of a ‘home for retired entertainers’ was first suggested by Joe Elvin (the King Rat of the Grand Order of Water Rats) in 1908. The idea was received with great enthusiasm and a considerable sum of money was immediately pledged from across the entertainment industry. Various fundraising events were organised in conjunction with The Music Hall Artistes’ Railway Association and later that year, the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (the original name of the EABF) was formed for the benefit of artistes across the Music Hall and variety profession. The particulars of a dilapidated mansion near Twickenham were discovered and in August 1911, Brinsworth House was purchased for £2,400. Extensive renovations and alterations were needed, in addition to furnishing the home and a special ‘Sixpenny Donation Fund’ was organised by ‘The Performer’ newspaper. The work was completed by November and a grand opening reception was held at Brinsworth House attended by many of the day’s leading artistes and journalists. At the reception, Joe Elvin and William McCarthy put forward an idea to establish a Society, to be known as ‘The Noble Six Hundred’ consisting of artistes and friends of the profession, each of whom would make a donation of £2.10.0 (£2.50) to raise the £1,400 required to pay off the mortgage. By the following April (1912), the entire amount had been raised and the mansion and 5 acres of land became the freehold property of the Music Hall profession. A board was erected and placed in the hall of the Home with the names of ‘The Noble Six Hundred’, where it still stands today. By the end of November 1912, there were ten occupants in residency, including one married couple. continued > > >

> > > In 1912, Alfred Butt, Chairman of the

VABF, proposed that an extension be built to Brinsworth House to accommodate the rising demand for the home and he and Oswald Stoll persuaded King George V and Queen Mary to attend a ‘Royal Command Performance’ in aid of Brinsworth House. King George V and Queen Mary were so impressed by Brinsworth House and the work of the Fund that they became its Patrons from 1921. The Fund has enjoyed Royal Patronage from the reigning monarch ever since and the annual fundraising ‘Royal Variety Performance’ is now approaching its 100th anniversary. In 1974, the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (VABF) changed its name to the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (EABF), to allow the Fund to widen its criteria of support, enabling it to house anyone who had spent their life working in entertainment. Over the years, and with the continual help and financial support of the entertainment industry, two new wings have been added to Brinsworth House and on both occasions the care home was honoured by the presence of one of its most ardent supporters, the late HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who performed the opening ceremonies. More recently, a new Conservatory was built, which was opened by HRH The Prince of Wales; also a very keen supporter of the Fund.

‘‘

he late, great Dame Thora Hird, DBE, introduced me to the wonderful work of the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund, the charity you are supporting by attending this Royal Variety Performance. For many years, I had been one of Thora's regular visitors to her delightful mews home in London. She was the most wonderful story teller and I delighted in hearing about her years in show business and life as a child in Morecombe. The death of her beloved Scottie, her husband, manager, confidante, line-tester and very best friend, was a blow from which Thora never really recovered. Her daughter Janette was wonderful and she adored her two grandchildren but no one replaced Scottie. As the years went by, her health began to fail and there were fewer dates in the diary, something that really depressed her. She had live-in carers but towards the end even they couldn’t give Thora the care she both needed and deserved.

So Thora moved to Brinsworth House, the EABF’s 36 bedded care home in Twickenham. For Thora the move wasn’t easy. It never is leaving your own home, but the care she received couldn't have been better. On my first visit, Thora was sitting in one of Brinsworth’s very comfortable, relaxed lounges. A member of staff came and asked her if she would like tea for her guest. A tray of tea and biscuits was brought, put before Thora and she poured. This is the level of respect Brinsworth shows to all the residents. Under the wonderful leadership of Matron, Sheila Gould, a devoted staff of nurses, carers, cooks, cleaners, handymen, gardeners, and administrators make sure the quality of care is second to none, something that is recognised by the local authority on its regular but unannounced inspections. And the care is total care. There are outings; the visits to HRH The Prince of Wales’ Cotswold home ‘Highgrove’ are a real treat, as are boat trips on the Thames. Live entertainment means a lot to many of the residents who have spent their lives in show business. And there’s a Bar - you can't ask for more! I so enjoy my regular visits, which have enabled me to share some very special moments with both residents and staff. But the EABF doesn’t just care for those who are in Brinsworth House. Each month, a committee meets to allocate grants to those in need. All this work is very expensive and this is why your support and that of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ is crucial. Mega salaries are reserved for the top stars. There are many people in show business whose salaries are not that much above the minimum wage. The work isn’t regular and as regards pensions, well forget them. When I was playing Widow Twankey at Wimbledon, I had to remember that when the panto season ended I would be all right - I had other work to do. Many of the cast, especially the hard-working chorus, had no idea where their next job would come from. So it only takes illness, an accident or some other unfortunate, unplanned happening for the life of a performer, or one of his or her dependants, to be thrown into chaos, especially financially. Rent and fuel bills have to be paid, house repairs have to be carried out and food needs to be put on the table. Sometimes there isn’t even the money to pay for a funeral. This is where, because of your generosity, the EABF can and does help.

PAGE 56 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2011

REV. CANON ROGER ROYLE

‘‘

hen my mother, Dame Thora Hird, DBE, moved into Brinsworth House for, what turned out to be, the last few months of her life, many people were surprised. Here she was with 5 BAFTAs and an American Emmy Award for heavy and dramatic roles, numerous “straight” plays in London’s West End and a career count of over 500 plays in theatres up and down the land. Although her television career had included half a dozen comedy series, she was best known for her Alan Bennett “Talking Heads” plays and her 20 years of the BBC Sunday programme, ‘Songs of Praise’. But if you scratched the surface a little you would soon discover strong links and friendships with Variety. Her father, James Hird, started his career as a strolling Minstrel on the sands in Morecambe, Lancs, and her mother, Marie Mayor, met him while appearing in a summer show on the Central Pier. In the 1950s, Thora herself did many “Summer Seasons” in broad comedy plays at the Grand Theatre in Blackpool, Scarborough, Torquay, Southsea, Bournemouth etc. and during each of these summers, struck up friendships that she kept going through the years. So it was no surprise to me that in her nineties, when she needed a little help and tender loving care, that she asked to visit Brinsworth House. Sure enough, as we walked in, she met old and dear friends and started trading stories and memories, from Blackpool Circus and the Black and White Minstrel Show, to a pianist who had accompanied her as she entertained troops during World War II.

‘‘

She moved in for “a rest” shortly afterwards and although she still made a couple of appearances in “Last of the Summer Wine” (a TV series that she had been in for over 16 years) it became very difficult for her to continue working.

It was at this point that the wisdom and understanding of the staff became so very important. With total love and patience they cared for her, showing kindness and thoughtfulness beyond anything I have ever encountered. They helped her and they helped me and I will never forget them all.

JANETTE SCOTT - daughter of Dame Thora Hird, DBE

fter over 100,000 entries and auditions from all over the UK, the spectacular grand finale of Britain’s Got Talent 2011 was broadcast live on ITV1 on Saturday 4th June. It featured showstopping performances from each and every one of the fantastic finalists.

T

he hugely successful, annual ITV1 television show, Britain's Got Talent, generously donates a large proportion of the money raised from viewers’ telephone votes to the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund each year. The EABF, in return, arranges for the series winner of the show to appear at the annual Royal Variety Performance, which is held in the presence of a senior member of the British Royal Family and watched by many millions of TV viewers worldwide. The EABF, now often simply known as the 'Royal Variety Charity', is enormously proud to be associated with Britain's Got Talent, and gratefully acknowledges the continued help and support of Simon Cowell and all at Syco Television.

Jai McDowall (aged 24), from Ayrshire in Scotland, perfomed the Josh Groban hit ‘To Where You Are’, securing him this year's crown and winning him the coverted spot on this evening’s Royal Variety Performance. He beat off stiff competition from hotly tipped favourites, Ronan Parke and New Bounce, who finished in second and third places respectively. The 5th series of Britain’s Got Talent featured two new judges; the lovely Amanda Holden was joined by British comedy king, Michael McIntyre, and by the legendary actor and television personality, David Hasselhoff. Simon Cowell returned for the live stages of the competition, and our very own favourites, Ant and Dec, continued as presenters of the hit show. Britain’s Got Talent was regularly watched by over 13M viewers per episode!

IL DIVO Il Divo are one of the most successful international musical break-out stories of this millennium and the world’s leading classical crossover quartet. Recently named Artist of the Decade at the Classic BRITS, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, French pop artist Sebastien Izambard and US tenor David Miller were formed by Simon Cowell in 2003 and have sold over 25 million albums, with 150 going gold and platinum in 33 countries. Their first four LPs achieved 50 No.1 chart positions internationally and now they return with 5th studio album ‘Wicked Game’, released November 28th, featuring a dramatic reworking of the Chris Isaak classic ‘Wicked Game’. They tour the UK in April next year as part of their massive 4th world tour.

GREG DAVIES Best known as the psychotic Head of Sixth Form Mr. Gilbert in ‘The Inbetweeners’ (Ch4), Greg first appeared on television in the critically acclaimed anarchic sketch group ‘We Are Klang’ (BBC3). In 2010 Greg’s solo stand up show ‘Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog’ delighted audiences at the Edinburgh Festival with manically told tales of growing up and the tribulations of his former teaching career. The show was nominated for the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award and an enormous sell-out national tour followed. Greg is a frequent face on our screens, appearing on shows including ‘Live at the Apollo’, ‘Have I Got News For You’, ‘The Graham Norton Show’, hosting ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’ and as a team captain on BBC1's ‘Ask Rhod Gilbert’. He is thrilled that he is appearing on the Royal Varity Performance, almost as thrilled as his mum.

JAI McDOWELL Tens of thousands of people applied for Britain’s Got Talent 2011, but it was Jai McDowall who won the judges and public over with his unforgettable voice. He wowed the audience with his incredible rendition of Josh Groban’s ‘To Where You Are’ and has since embarked on the Britain’s Got Talent tour, performing to huge crowds across the country. The 25 year-old has just finished recording and is about to release his debut album after landing a record deal with music giants, Sony, and has already fallen in love with studio life. He is thrilled to be a part of this evening’s Royal Variety Performance.

BARRY MANILOW With worldwide sales of more than 80 million records, Barry Manilow’s success is a benchmark in popular music. His concerts sell out instantly. He is ranked as the top adult contemporary chart artist of all time, according to R&R (Radio & Records) and Billboard Magazines, with no less than 25 consecutive Top 40 hits. The list includes all-time favorites that Manilow still sings today: ‘Mandy’, ‘It’s A Miracle’, ‘Could It Be Magic’, ‘I Write the Songs’, ‘Weekend In New England’, ‘Looks Like We Made It’, ‘Can’t Smile Without You’, and the Grammy Award-winning ‘Copacabana (At the Copa)’. Rolling Stone crowned him ‘a giant among entertainers... the showman of our generation’, and Frank Sinatra summed up Manilow best when Ol’ Blue Eyes told the British press, ‘He’s next’.

LEONA LEWIS Leona first came to prominence six years ago as the Hackney born starlet who triumphed as the X Factor winner of 2006. Since then she has become known as one of the most successful British pop exports in modern music. She is already a multiplatinum selling artist and three time Grammy Award nominee for her music spread between two consecutive albums, ‘Spirit’ and ‘Echo.’ Leona has now sold over 9 million albums with her most successful single, ‘Bleeding Love,’ reaching number one in over thirty countries. Spirit became the fastest-selling debut album and biggest seller of 2007, making her the first British solo artist to top the Billboard 200. he Lowry is delighted to be hosting the 84th Royal Variety Performance and I’m particularly delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal for another wonderful night of art and entertainment. This evening’s performance is undoubtedly one of the highlights of our eleven year history.

At the heart of everything we do is our commitment to building deep-rooted relationships with communities in Salford and beyond. Our innovative community residency programme, Walkabout, is spending this year in Salford's Lower Broughton. Walkabout works in partnership with local people to devise and present arts-based events and initiatives that explore fundamental issues close to home.

The Lowry is a beacon for the regenerative power of the arts. Just twenty five years ago, this site had approached the end of its life as a working dock. In 2011, with MediaCityUK opening its doors for the first time, Salford Quays is entering a new era as one of the most exciting cultural and media destinations in the world. Since opening in 2000, we have seen some of the world’s most talented performers take to The Lowry stages and finest artists displayed in our galleries. We play a critical role as the most visited cultural venue in the North West and in supporting art produced in the North West.

In 2012, we will stage Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Wonderful Town’ – a landmark collaboration between three of Greater Manchester’s finest artistic institutions: The Hallé Orchestra, The Royal Exchange and The Lowry. At the other end of the scale, our Studio development programme is working with some of the most exciting artists and emerging companies in the North West.

We are determined that The Lowry will always look for new ways to provide everyone, especially children and young people, with the opportunity to be inspired by great art both in the community and in The Lowry. I hope you enjoy the performance.
