Mother River What is in the mix for 2017? Of course there will be the Distinction Advisory Days and we hope to have some Special Interest Advisories, such as Nature and Travel. We are planning more Self Help Group/Café Sessions which are proving to be very beneficial as the first steps for those who are interested in working towards RPS distinction. We are working hard with a couple of SIGs to bring something different to the region, although this is still in its infancy of planning. There will be a couple of days of photography and as this is a ‘member activity’, if anyone wishes to suggest themes or places for consideration, this would be helpful for all members to get the greatest benefit. The region will also be hosting an Assessment Day in York during May 2017; this will only be available to book through the website or Bath. Now that should be enough to tempt your appetite and all will be revealed on the website and promoted in the Journal throughout the year. More information can be found on page 4 of this Newsletter.

A Photography Journey along the Yangtze Yan Wang Preston British-Chinese photographer Yan Wang Preston began her project as a way to reconnect with her homeland after moving to the UK in 2005. She was interested in the ways in which the Yangtze is perceived and portrayed in China and the West. She describes the process of documenting the 6,211km of the Yangtze River as "four years of blood, sweat and tears." Mother River project follows a strict ‘Y Points System’: to photograph one of China’s Mother Rivers, the Yangtze, with a precise interval of every 100 kilometres using a largeformat film camera, a total of 63 photographic locations were recorded by the singleminded artist-explorer. Completed between 2010 and 2014, the project has received multiple awards, including the Reviewer Choice Award at Format International Portfolio Review in Derby (2014) and the Shiseido Photographer Prize at the Three Shadows Photography Award in Beijing in April 2016. Solo exhibitions of Mother River have been staged at the 56th Venice Biennale as well as museums in China such as the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum and Wuhan Art Museum. The renowned British curator Zelda Cheatle comments on Mother River: “Yan Preston’s pictures of the Yangtze River will stop you in your tracks. This is a photographic odyssey that is remarkable for the pictures and remarkable as a story. This young and fearless woman set off to make a pictorial record of the entire Mother River, stopping every 100km to take a picture on her large plate camera. The result is an astonishing look at the whole inner life of China, composed and shot with great skill and ingenuity in often the most adverse conditions. Three and a half years later, this wondrous series of pictures is being made into an exhibition that will thrill and enthral and educate. A work of genius and an eye-opening experience.” Yan’s presentation can be seen at the York Medical Society, 23 Stonegate, YO1 8AW at 6:30 - 8:30pm, 29th Oct 16. Booking details can be found on the website.

Details of RPS Special Interest Groups and other Regions Locally, we tend to receive a few details about the RPS SIGs, especially when they are doing something with a Yorkshire flavour, or they have a sub-group which meets in and around Yorkshire. When any of these groups provide me with summaries of their local activities, with a few images, we include details within the Newsletter, to let everyone know what is going off and possibly encourage more involvement. The newly formed Landscape SIG is growing rapidly (see next page), although it seems they have yet to venture into Yorkshire’s landscapes to take photographs, but perhaps they are building up to this? Some SIGs and Regions publish their Newsletters and Journals at www.issuu.com as with this Newsletter, and entering the name of the publication, or simply ‘RPS’, in the search box reveals a wide variety of interesting items. Let’s hope the RPS ‘trial’ subscription with issuu is to continue, then everyone can share more than ever.

Landscape Special Interest Group

(article received from Jim Souper ARPS)

The Landscape Special Interest Group, launched in January 2016, aims to encourage and develop the practice of landscape photography, in all its many forms. It has already attracted more than 400 members. At the last count, there were 22 from the Yorkshire Region, which is represented on the committee by group newsletter editor Jim Souper. The group’s main objectives are -“to encourage photographers to concentrate on the art of landscape photography, in its broadest sense, through enhancing understanding of techniques and collaboration of ideas, with the lofty aim of advancing both the art of the landscape photograph and the skills of those who practice it”. The group produces a monthly e-newsletter and, during its first months, has run a number of successful field trips and a workshop on the use of tilt and shift lenses for landscape photography. All have been fully booked. One of the challenges for the group is to ensure our events have a wide geographical spread, and it is hoped that Yorkshire locations will feature before too long. If any Yorkshire member is interested in organising a field trip in the area, please contact Paul Graber, the group’s events co-ordinator at landscapeevents@rps.org Moving forward, the committee is working on how best to put the results of their recent members’ survey in to practice. One of the priorities identified was to provide the means for members to get in touch with other local members. Should any Yorkshire members wish to follow up on this, please contact Jim Souper at jim_souper@msn.com For more information about the Landscape Group please visit http://www.rps.org/special-interest-groups/landscape

More from your Regional Organiser. Hopefully by the time you receive this newsletter, the Regional Committee will have outlined plans for 2017 events. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, there are still some events in this year in particular we have two photography days, a café session [under our new format ‘Self Help Group’] in York and an Distinctions Advisory day at Wakefield. The photography day is planned to be with the Police and Dog training unit, the opportunity to photograph criminal work, aspects of dog training, involving ‘bite work’ with perhaps the heelwork and agility element of the syllabus. We are also very fortunate to have a wonderful guest speaker late in October - ‘Mother River - A Photographic Journey along the Yangtze’ by Yan Wang Preston, this will be in York and tickets are limited so booking early will be advantageous. Please check the details and dates etc on the website. A good step into my next mention – we are lucky to have David Edge who has taken on the website for the Region, he is a natural with the technology and has really absorbed himself in the role. It would be good if members could give him support by the way of passing him information or images that they would like to be shared. Many of the Photographic Societies and Clubs around the region will also have plans afoot for 2017 and we would very much like to hear of them. You may be aware that the Advisory Board and Council Meeting of March was cancelled, this was so that the Strategic Plan 2015-2020 needed addressing with more pragmatic vision and objectives set. This plan is still in draft form and was discussed at the July Regional Organisers Day, it will also be a main part of the Group Chairs Day in August and then the appropriate points will be aligned with the draft to become a working document. There were some very interesting points made at the RO day and hopefully some of these will be taken on board as part of the plan developments. Finally I must mention that the International Photobook Exhibition will also be visiting Yorkshire for one day only 12th November. The winners and short-listed entries for the RPS Open International Photobook Exhibition 2016 will be on display at the Impressions Gallery Bradford. Mary Crowther ARPS Please be aware that the next Contemporary Group NE meeting in September will have a change of venue from York to Wakefield, details again can be found on the website.

The 37th Frame And finally - an apology for the poor quality of the images in the last Newsletter. They were not up to the usual standard and all seemed a bit out of focus. The original photographs were sharp, the printing was as good as ever and the paper quality - likewise. Culprit ? - method by which I attached the pages to my email to our printers, reducing overall size from several MB to a few KB. Whoops - as a volunteer, I deserve every penny I don’t get.

The last bit, squeezed in at the end. When using 36 exposure films, it was expected that a Yorkshireman would manage to get at least one more frame out of the film.
