May 2023 Newsletter

The Annual Exhibition is now live and shining, in Carnoustie Library , 21 High St Carnoustie DD7 6AN. It’ll be up until the end of June, so plenty of time to avail yourself of the pleasures of Snooty, and even if you’re not a golfer there is lots to see and do.

The lead image in this year’s Exhibition is Down Came The Rain by Mike Tibbs ARPS, and a special mention to him for his vibrant, eye-catching, high impact image. The list of all images chosen is on Page 2, and the images can be viewed on our website.

Tayside recently had a Day Oot at St Andrews, and 5 intrepid snappers had a grand day in a grand wee town, the e-zine version of our collective efforts is attached. There will be more of these informal days, so keep your eyes peeled and your minds open

Landscape SIG has a few Scottish-specific events coming up, and I’ve included details of the next one in the What’s On column on page 1. They also have a few special projects going on as well…Shipping Forecast, Postcards From Home, ‘Zines, so if you think you can help in any of those, or want to be involved then get in touch with them via Colin Balfour on landscape@rps.org.

Landscape / DI SIGs have a joint Talk-Walk-Talk project as well, focussing on coastline photography, with the scheduled talk set for 7th September, followed by leader led photographic sessions around our coasts, then a follow up discussion / show and tell session. To get involved contact Colin as above, or Jean Robson on digmem@rps.org

Speaking of Jean…Big Big Congratulations are due to her for achieving the lofty pinnacle that is an F., based round Svalbard, which interestingly is Norwegian, home to about 2000 people, many of whom are either Ukrainian or Russian - and peaceful. Achingly beautiful, empty but full of space, and Jean captured it’s essence sublimely.

Other Scottishy things of note are:

Nigel, our Grampian area volunteer, is hoping to start a local group, with the possibility of meeting up for chats, to share images, to take images, to visit exhibitions, maybe some zoom meetings…just whatever you want to do. This is all part of the grand plan of increasing the range and geographical availability of RPS contact, and so if you are in Grampian and want to get better value for your RPS subscription, get in touch with him by replying to the email that went out via the RPS Broadcast system.

On a similar note, the Contemporary SIG are trying to get a Scottish Group up and running, and they’ve sent a Broadcast email out too. There is a possibility that Documentary will tag along with that, as Contemporary / Documentary do that in a few regions in England, so you might get an email from that SIG. Putative plans are out there for a Cityscape Day in Edinburgh? Maybe at Fringe time? Maybe also a similar day in Dundee, Scotland’s trendiest waterfront City.

We can see from our own area of Scotland, from the entries to competitions, from the numbers that come to the AGM, from the folks who interact on FB that most RPS members are happy enough with the Journal, and that’s all they really want…which is fine. But, there is a lot more stuff available now, and within Scotland we are all trying to catch up with the very successful Highland Bunch, so take a look at what’s out there and give it a go.

This will take you to the details of an exhibition that has just opened in Glasgow University, chronicling the fates of some terminally ill patients who were also living with the added pressure of poverty and an inability to afford to attend their treatments and appointments. This is happening right now, 2023, right here in Scotland (and the rest of the UK) and that is a sad reflection on our Society. It only runs until May 5th, so it may be too late for you to go and visit it, but I’m going on Tuesday 2nd, and I’ll be outraged / moved on your behalf. Here’s another:

https://igpoty.com/exhibition/dundee-heritage-trust-igpoty-16/

A wonderful plant based exhibition at The Verdant Works, Dundee, until the end of August….24 separate categories of stunning imagery, not just about a bonny rose. There’s also a smaller Exhibition upstairs by Matthew Schwartz, and that’s pretty cool too. Tomato soup and Cheese Scone is a winner.

And, finally, this month’s congratulations goes to John Thomson for his very excellent Animal image, Gotcha…which you can see at the top of Page 1. May’s subject is Woodland…and who amongst us doesn’t have a picture of a tree of some sort? Either just a wee solo one on a hilltop or hillside, fighting for survival against the wind and the elements, or a huge forest of them huddled together and sheltering wild animals and bogeymen, or full of bluebells, or blanketed in snow. Get your entry in to scotlandweb@rps.org, as soon as you can…this could be a busy one.
