06 Events Details of group events

A great deal of planning goes into the Group's field trips but, with the best will in the world, the one thing that cannot be guaranteed is the weather. This was highlighted by the experience of those joining last month's Cromer field trip, as you will see from Barry Freeman's report.

I am indebted to committee member Pauline Benbrook for this month's Favourite Place, Epping Forest. There have been very few submissions from the wider membership this month, so there is no Members Images page, so if you have been thinking of submitting please do!

I know that quite a few members have found difficulty getting to grips with posting images to the forum. The good news is that we now have a dedicated email address for the newsletter landscapenews@rps.org. I hope this will make it easier for members to contribute to the newsletter.

Submissions The next newsletter will be out in mid November. The deadline for submissions is Sunday 6th November.

For articles, please keep your copy to 500 words or less and include two or three images at least. Feel free to send a brief summary of your idea before committing to the full piece

NEWS ROUND UP Outdoor Photographer of the Year 2016 The closing date for Outdoor Photography magazine's annual competition is 2nd November. This year's prize is the chance to photograph the Fjallraven Polar 2017 expedition next April.

There are a number of categories, with Light on the land and At the water's edge being the most obvious of interest to landscape photographers.

More details can be found in the latest edition of the magazine or at opoty.co.uk.

Weather Watch Tim Moxon was named 2016 Weather Photographer of the Year competition by the Royal Meteorological Society and the RPS, on 10th September.

Short-listed images, from more than 800 submitted, can be viewed here. The 2017 call for entries will be made early next year.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016 Winners of the 52nd Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition will be announced at the Natural History Museum on 19th October, with 100 of the best images being exhibited from 21st October until 10th September 2017.

Entry to the 2017 competition is open from 24th October until 15th December. For details, visit http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/wpy/competition.html.

EVENT REPORT Cromer Field Trip 10th & 11th September

by Barry Freeman ARPS The planned date was for Saturday 10th September, but on the days before it became more and more obvious that the weather might not be that good. On the Friday, many of those down to attend on the Saturday became concerned as the forecast said there was to be heavy rain throughout the day.

With the marvels of email, there was a quick discussion and the majority agreed to change to the Sunday. The problem was that Pauline Benbrook and her partner, Bill, were already on their way and they had booked a hotel for the Friday night.

Of course most likely the Saturday being wet, could have lead to better landscape photography, but the rest of us did enjoy a warm sunny day with clear blue skies and a good lunch. You can decide for yourselves which pictures are best between the wet and the sunny day. Pauline and Bill enjoyed the Saturday in the rain.

12 members and partners attended and we all enjoyed the comradeship of the Landscape Group day out. We will all be looking forward to the next one.

MY FAVOURITE PLACE Epping Forest

Epping Forest, Essex is close to where I live and my favourite place at any time of the year.

The ancient forest is a place of natural beauty, which is designated a Special Area of Conservation and Site of Special Scientific interest.

Autumn is an ideal time for photography and I also enjoy a walk on a cold and frosty winter's day.

A selection of exhibitions & events which may be of interest to landscape group members

Exhibitions Edward Burtynsky - Salt Pans/Essential Elements, London Images from Salt Pans and from his earlier projects at London's Flowers Gallery, from 16th September until 29th October. The exhibition coincides with the publication of a major new monograph, Edward Burtynsky: Essential Elements Lin Gregory: Between Land and Sea, East Sussex Between Land and Sea represents a journey along the East Sussex coast, capturing the landmarks that occupy the space where the land meets the sea.

Coast and Country, Guildford Five local photographers exhibit their views of the natural world at the Treacle Gallery, Guildford until 6th November.

Dan Nathan: Paralland, London Black and white landscape photography exploring themes of time and erosion in the Sahara Desert and the border between Utah and Arizona. Showing at Serena Morton II, Ladbroke Grove, until 12th November Inside the Outside, Nottingham An exhibition of work by landscape photography collective Inside the Outside, including work by John Blakemore and Valda Bailey. Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Edinburgh The exhibition, on tour from the Natural History Museum, is on show at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, from 16th September until 19th February 2017.

The View from Here | Landscape Photography from the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh A selection of landscape photographs from the 1840s to the present day, drawn entirely from the permanent collection of photographs at the National Galleries of Scotland. At the Scottish National Portrait Gallery from 29th October until 30th April 2017.

Joe Cornish Gallery, Northallerton The On Landscape Room is currently showing work

Chester Arts Fair The Deepbridge Chester Arts Fair 2016, returns for its fifth successive year from 18-20 November at Chester Racecourse. Visitors can view and buy art from over 90 galleries and artists presenting collections of visual art, photography, sculpture, glasswork and ceramics.

Photomonth, London A celebration of photography in galleries across East London, from 1st October to 30th November.

Digital Splash, Liverpool Equipment, advice and guest speakers at the Liverpool Echo Arena on the weekend of 15th & 16th October.

The Photography Show, Birmingham The UK's largest photography show returns to the NEC, Birmingham from 18th to 21st March 2017.

Liverpool and Crosby Field Trip Saturday 15th October

Spend the morning photographing the blend of architectural styles in and around the city centre.

Then, weather permitting, relocate to visit Anthony Gormley's renowned Another Place, an installation of 100 life-sized statues at Crosby Beach.

Pembrokeshire Weekend 29th/30th October

Haverfordwest Saturday morning will start at Marloes Sands. After lunch, we will move on to Broad Haven or, if the group prefers, Wooltack Point with views to Skomer and Skokholm. On Sunday we will go to Solva and Mathry. See here for more details.

Capture the Lake District in Autumnal colours Saturday 22nd October

Elterwater The North West Region is again running its successful autumn trip to the magnificent Langdale valley in the Lake District; a trip that will be of interest to many members of the Landscape Group.

Walk through Aira Beck on to Gowbarrow and then the top of Yew Crag; visit Aira Force with various falls, rocks and rapids. After lunch move on to the Bowder Stone car park in Borrowdale to visit either Grange Crags, with sunset opportunities towards Derwentwater and Skiddaw, or King's How. See here for details.

Long Exposure Coastal Exploration Sunday 4th December

Shoreham The day will start at Shoreham harbour, West Sussex, making images of the harbour structures and the harbour wall. After two hours, the group will drive along to Shoreham beach and make images of the posts and breakwaters as well as break for lunch. The day will finish on Brighton beach with the opportunity to photograph the old west pier at sunset. See here for more details.
