First netball match in 18 months

In May, we played our first matches for 18 months against Kingswood. Read the reports from Olivia and Eva for the Under 14A team, and Seren and Yvie from the Under 14B team.

Under 14A team

We are over the moon to have got to put our training into practice, and especially, in beating our rivals Kingswood. We have grown as a team, and it showed on court when we clicked throughout our play.

We started the first quarter strong with accurate passes into the D and a flow of passes from player to player. Sophie and Olivia were a great pair with quick passes into and around the D, which were beautifully finished by Summer and Emily.

From the defensive side, effective pressure from everyone in defence lead to inaccurate balls from Kingswood and superb interceptions from us. For example, in Goal Keeper Hannah and Zahra's arms seemed never-ending, in Goal Defence Freya and Ruby's jumps were explosive and rewarding while in Wing Defence, Eva as well as Freya's shouts were loud and confusing, it was great to see training practice come into court play. Thank you, Ms Slade for the top tips!

Coming to the last quarter things changed, we were more than 10 points in front of Kingswood so Ms Slade put a spanner in the works and helped us prove to ourselves that we should have faith in our RHS Under 14 team.

Well done to Ruby and Summer for receiving ‘Players of the match’ from Kingswood and to Sophie for ‘Coach's player’ and Zahra for ‘Player’s player’.

We are beyond happy to be captains for our first match this year, and also because we get to play with amazing people every week and do what we love. Olivia and Eva, Year 9

Under 14B team

We were all very excited to be back on the courts for our first match in a long time. Our team was motivated and worked well together throughout the match. When given out positions as a team we got on with it making no fuss and supporting each other ready for the game. We had made our goals for the game and Seren prepared us with helpful tactics.

Our match started off strong, with everyone communicating and using some of the skills we had learnt in training. Through the whole match everyone gave 110% and was determined to do well. If we made a mistake, we picked ourselves up and had positive thoughts.

Using our tactics became helpful when we included the split drives when a backline was taken, this helped us find space without the ball being intercepted.

As captains we both feel very happy with our team’s performance and we found it really helpful when our sub gave us feedback and improvements for the following quarter, which helped the team spot the oppositions tactics. One key thing that we learnt was that it is very important to get on side quickly and to take the centre pass as quick as possible.

One improvement that the team agreed to remember for next time was that some balls were high and loops, therefore easier to intercept. Next time, we aim to have stronger passes to avoid the opposition gaining possession.

Overall, we all tried our best and we all agreed that it paid off, and we can’t wait to improve even more when we play our next match.

Finally, we would like to thank our coaches for helping us improve and for teaching us new things as we can definitely see an improvement. Seren and Yvie, Year 9

Kaleidescope: An evening of dance inspired by the colour wheel

The annual Dance Show took place in May and featured performances from the Prep and Senior girls. The choreography was inspired by the colour wheel and our girls demonstrated their creative flair in selecting themes, music and costume to enhance their choreographies. Themes such as royalty, coral in the ocean, sunshine, a neon party, nature and fire were reflected throughout the evening. Highlights included the Year 5 Victorian inspired performance, Year 6 Kaleidoscope patterning and the Senior Dance Company performing a dance for camera ‘Queen’s Gambit’ inspired chess dance.

Miss Kovacs, Dance teacher said, “I am so proud of our RHS dancers who have shown great determination, passion and resilience in coming together to create the dance show this year. All of the rehearsals began during the January lockdown, learning movement content for group choreographies during GHL lessons. Once we were back on site our dancers continued to rehearse relentlessly to create a vibrant and joyous show! Congratulations to all who took part.”
