COMMODORE’S REPORT

Welcome to the Annual Report for 2023, now an established publication providing members with a summary of what has been another enjoyable and successful year, though not without its challenges both on and off the water.

A contrasting season out on the water where “O hear us when we cry to Thee, for those in peril on the sea” readily illustrates the sentiment of sailors who faced days either becalmed with no wind or too much, resulting in many races and cruising trips cancelled or abandoned. Yet there were occasions which make it all worthwhile.

One of those was the first day of the Squib Scottish and Northern Championships where the sun shone, the moderate wind was warm and the racing competitive… champagne sailing at its best. The Club has strong claims as the Scottish base for the active Squib fleet joining the Dragon and H Boat fleets with such an accolade. The Cruise in Company programme continues to develop including an inaugural cruiser/racer joint event, the Open Sailing evening for the public are more popular than ever and our joint racing events with Forth Corinthian continue to grow in popularity. The Club’s Cadet training programme benefitted from professional tuition for the many cadets who enjoyed the activities on and off the water.

The Club strives to ensure members have the best yacht club experience and the investment in facilities continues both for the clubhouse and the yard and harbour. The last few years has seen major capital expenditure and whilst the present need for such is currently not as imperative, plans are being implemented to ensure adequate budgeting with funds available to cover anticipated future requirements. Every penny earned is reinvested for the benefit of all members and I’m encouraged that membership numbers continue to grow. I trust this season’s new members have enjoyed their introduction to the Club and found good experiences and value.

SAILING REPORT

2023 has been an ‘interesting’ year in terms of weather. The first warning came when the Commodore told the Council meeting that he was hoping that the “pesky” (or similar) Easterly winds wouldn’t appear this year. We then had 4-5 weeks of Easterly winds to start the season and by the end of the season the Easterlies were showing us that they could do a storm too. We lost quite a lot of races to the wind – either too little or too much – this year.

However we still had lots of great races and our open regattas all managed to achieve a series despite some challenging conditions for the race officers. This year we held the VX One Nationals at the same time as the Edinburgh Regatta, Squib Scottish &

In-house training included Powerboat II courses which has resulted in a very much needed increase in our pool of RIB drivers.

Again we held some very successful Cruises in Company including an overnight to Port Edgar and a combined cruise and informal race to Aberdour.

Our collaboration with FCYC continued via the Festival Series, which again was designed to encourage cruiser-racers, and the reintroduction of the Jubilee Cup as a joint team racing event between the two Granton clubs.

The latter was sailed in RFYC H-Boats and was great fun for all involved.

Council approved the purchase of a Sailing Shed at the start of the season. This has changed RFYC life for me and many others – we can now store our racing and cadet equipment all in one place and we have a hub for our cadet training.

As always, the sailing activity has been dependent on the support and enthusiasm of our members. THANK YOU to the many people who contributed with results, cruising events, open events, cadet training, boat repairs, mark laying/ lifting, harbour management, race duties, websites, bookings, catering and entertainment. None of the activities mentioned in this report would be possible without you.

Outwith hosting events, the House team has been working hard behind the scenes to continue to improve the member experience.

We substituted one of the beer taps to Beavertown Neck Oil, which proved an instant success. The range of non-alcoholic beverages continues to evolve, as does our range of wines and spirits. Within the lounge we replaced our temperamental old projector with a new flat screen TV to support talks and presentations, upgraded several seats, and installed new curtain tie backs (to fully show off our new windows views). The rotten cladding on the outside north facing side has been replaced and we are in the final stages of re-furbishing the office. The new honesty payment system has bedded in well and we have trained several members to serve behind the bar, operate in the kitchen, and open/close the clubhouse.
