1 COMMODORE’S REPORT Commodore Michael Tasker

It is with great pleasure that I introduce not the Commodore’s Report, but the Royal Forth Annual Report by way of this new format. I trust that it will provide a sufficient summary of the year’s activities where you will find comments by Flag Officers and Office Bearers highlighting their own areas of responsibility.

A description of a year where “Omnia mutantur nihil interit”, as Pythagoras is alleged to have stated, appears most valid. With a loose translation being “everything changes, nothing is lost”, I complete my first year of being your Commodore having overseen the implementation of the initial stages of a plan for change at the Club, yet ensuring the very essence of what has and continues to make Royal Forth successful is certainly not lost; not even just maintained, but enhanced. With Covid-19 ever lurking in the background, I suggest we can all be quietly satisfied that the effort put into recommencing all Club activities has been a success, with the changes implemented already bearing fruit.

Membership numbers continue to increase and at the financial year end the Club hit the second target of the year at 300 (see Appendix 1). The increased focus on and usage of the Club’s social media platforms has certainly been a contributory factor providing a much greater profile of the Club’s activities for the public to engage with. My thanks go to Will Davies, Membership Secretary who has reorganised the membership application process, the number of new members being testimony to its success. I welcome all of this year’s new members, thank them for joining and look forward to all becoming more involved in the activities the Club offers.

The most significant event of the year was the retiral of Sandra Cameron after thirty seven years of “taking care of business” in the Club office. The occasion was marked with a very enjoyable function in the clubhouse in early July where Sandra was presented with gifts from the membership as an appreciation and heartfelt thank you for all her unstinting contributions to the efficient running of the Club. We wish her a long and happy retirement.

At the start of May, the Club welcomed Karen Bates, our new Business Manager and Moira Barker, our new Finance Manager. They have been instrumental in instigating the plan to digitalise the Club’s administration and financial management. Members can now access a full range of information and functions on our new website’s members’ portal including payment processing.

This has been a huge effort and my thanks to both for their diligence and perseverance. The Club will continue this where further aspects of administrative processes are being reviewed.

There has been significant capital investment both inside and out. In the clubhouse, the bar has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment and a new professional kitchen has been installed. Many members have already enjoyed an enhanced food and drink offering and I would encourage a greater use of these facilities by all members. The House Committee has undertaken to drive this change, led by Rear Commodore Will Davies and I’m sure all members are very appreciative of their dedication to the cause. For the Yard and Harbour, the electric tug has been replaced and a second container is now in place to offer further storage and workshop facilities.

A significant number of moorings have been refurbished with further ground chain being replaced in order to increase the current number of moorings offered for members’ use. Rear Commodore Brian Robertson with Piotr, our Yard and Harbour Manager plus the Harbour Committee and volunteer team are due a debt of gratitude for the amount of work that has been and continues to be undertaken, often unseen by most members.

Yet it is the opportunity offered out on the water that is the principle reason we are members and it was fantastic that an uninterrupted season of racing and cruising was enjoyed by many, with the usual mix of weather, though the Easterlies were very stubborn to leave us. Members are encouraged to participate in the organised activities on the water; those lacking experience are welcome to participate as there will always be assistance and advice available. It was also encouraging that the two Squibs available for hire by members were regularly seen out on the water.

The highlight of the sailing season was the Dragon Scottish Championship and Edinburgh Cup, enhanced by the participation of the newly refurbished ‘Bluebottle’, the late Duke of Edinburgh’s Dragon. The week’s racing saw a dozen visiting Dragons compete with our members’ yachts making it a memorable spectacle, and whilst winds were light, the racing was very close and competitive.

The Club hosted a fantastic operation shore side including very efficient lifting in and out of competitors’ yachts, and the hospitality, including two memorable prizegiving dinners — top quality throughout the week. The feedback from competitors was most complimentary and everyone involved in the planning and execution of the week’s events can be proud of their efforts. The guests departed with a very favourable impression and it re-establishes the Club as a venue for future regatta events. Thank you to all involved in making this such a success.

I would like to sincerely thank my fellow Flag Officers, Office Bearers and members of Council, plus others who have volunteered, for all the diligent effort that has been undertaken to deliver a very successful year for the Club.

Whilst implementing a programme of change, and there will be more to come, I can assure members that we will continue to strive to enhance the experience and value of being a member of Royal Forth.

I am pleased to report that despite the various challenges which the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to us all, the Royal Forth Yacht Club finds itself in a sound financial position. The annual accounts which have been signed off by the Club’s auditor Chiene and Tait, show an annual loss of £12,211 for the financial year ending in October 2021. There were, however, a number of significant one-off items both in terms of income and expenditure.

On a continuing operating basis, the Club is operating at break-even, which continues the improving trend shown over the past three years.

A Year of Investment The Club has been fortunate to benefit from a number of grants that were made available to support small businesses and organisations such as ourselves through the pandemic. This increased our income by £19,000 during the financial year. The benefit of lower legal and personnel costs meant that we had sufficient financial strength to allocate this supportive income to investment in the fabric of the Club House and facilities within the yard. There has been £18,327 of expenditure for a total refurbishment of our catering facilities, the investment of which was timed to support Will Davies and his many helpers to provide the catering and refreshments for the Edinburgh Cup. It should also be recognised that Will and his team did much of the heavy work themselves, and sold on most of the departing kitchen equipment to lower the overall costs.

The Harbour and Yard have also seen significant investment with Brian Robertson leading a programme of maintenance and repair. The two largest investment items have been the £8,400 for the new tug which is required for the numerous boat movements in the yard during the season, most notably during lift-in and lift-out, and the shipping containers which are acting as the boatman’s workshop and office.

Thank you It would be remiss of me not to thank Club members who have kindly donated time, money or both to help support the Club’s activities. Generous donors raised over £8,000 to furnish new race marks that facilitate the racing activities within our sailing areas. Members who donated their time and skills for the Edinburgh Cup also allowed the event to generate a small operating profit for the Club which can be reinvested for the benefit of everyone. The Harbour team also managed to salvage scrap metal from the East harbour to the value of £1,500, fully justifying the expression, “where there’s muck, there’s brass’.

Finally, I’d like to thank Moira Barker, our new Finance Manager. She has worked tremendously hard to bring the Club’s accounts into the electronic age and we now have a fully integrated banking and budgeting system.

We are able to track both income and expenditure into specific activity areas and we will be using this financial data to work with the various Club Committees to create and manage budgets, and to prioritise long-term capital expenditures. The aim is to be in a position to be able to manage our finances so that it will be possible to setaside capital ahead of important capital expenditures, the purpose of which is to maintain and improve the fabric of the Club and the services that can be provided to all members.

3 RACING REPORT Sarah Robertson Sailing Secretary

The Sailing Committee decided to take an optimistic view in 2021 and also to enable as many people as possible to race and cruise. During the planning phase, Covid-19 restrictions were still in place and guidance was both draconian and confusing but we decided we would take the view that this would all change.

We therefore planned a full calendar of racing and introduced changes to the sailing instructions that extended the use of gate starts. The latter meant significantly less duty volunteers were required and that more people could sail.

We lost a couple of races to the weather over the course of the season but overall the programme largely went to plan. We planned six Cruises in Company, sixteen evening races, twenty-two weekend Club racing days and two open events. The ‘big one’ (Dragon Edinburgh Cup) is being reported on separately, however we also managed to run the One Design event which incorporated a 707 traveller, the H-Boat Nationals and the Squib Scottish Championships. The weather let us down but regardless we received good feedback for our organisation and welcome.

This year we completed the racing mark replacement plan with the help of generous member donations. We now have a full set of yellow race marks and a couple of spares. They are not as visible in certain weather conditions as the old black canisters but require a lot less maintenance and are very much easier to handle.

We also reviewed the Sailing Instructions to reduce duplication and to comply with the altered Racing Rules, plus we introduced a racing season Entry Form to ensure that we are following proper process in terms of racer sign-up to the SIs. As always, the sailing activity has been dependent on the support and enthusiasm of our members — thank you to John McLaren and Cathy Ogden for setting up and laying the new marks, John Robertson for his help with Sailing Instructions, Louise Harney and Mark Harding for maintaining our web entries, Will Davies for his amazing House support and user knowledge of the online Sailing Club Manager portal and of course the Sailing Committee members themselves (Dave Northridge, Louise, Will and Cathy).

In 2022, I hope we will find ways to encourage our new members into joining our racing, cruising and training activities plus see a return to having the changing rooms open for use (I like my changing robe but not that much!).

4 CRUISING REPORT Brian Robertson Rear Commodore (Harbour Convenor)

Despite the difficulties caused by Covid-19 this year, particularly during the earlier months of the season, the ‘Cruise in Company’ events were very well supported and it is clear that this is an activity within the Club which is growing in popularity. Cruising in Company is also a great way for existing and new members to gain confidence in their craft and themselves.

There were six ‘day’ events held this year and it was not uncommon for as many as 12 craft to be in attendance.

These events are designed principally to be social events and often it is not the distance which we sail to our destination which is important, but rather what we do once we get there!

If tides are against us, and finding a sheltered anchorage is the only option, then anchoring and rafting up is a good way to socialise. We were fortunate however to be able to visit Aberdour Harbour twice during this season and, on these occasions, members were able to disembark and socialise on the pier. Usually on these occasions we find Aberdour Boat Club very welcoming.

This season, the ‘cruisers’ did venture further afield, and in July a week-long trip was organised to Arbroath and Eyemouth. We would have taken in Berwick and Holy Island as well if the conditions had not been against us. On our return leg, both Tidecatcher and Solveig enjoyed a magical circumnavigation of the Bass Rock…

5 CADET REPORT Will Davies Membership Secretary

We have had another hugely successful Cadet Season with numbers increasing again this year to 24 cadets who regularly attended Tuesday evening sessions. Under the tutorage of our lead instructor, Fiona Drennan, and supported by cadet parent helpers, they have enjoyed a variety of on and off the water activities. The cadets have enjoyed sailing several different boats utilising the Club Toppers, RS Feva, Laser 2000s, and Squibs. There has also been the opportunity to join in the keelboat racing to broaden their experience.

It has been fantastic to see some of the more experienced cadets assist some of the less experienced ones, sharing knowledge and tips, as well as enjoying sailing with them. Off the water, they have enjoyed learning the theoretical side of sailing: knot tying, boat maintenance, plus building great friendships.

The Cadet Regatta was deservedly won by Amy Lane in the four-race regatta. Simon Ellis was second, and third place was tied by Hamilton Cruickshank De Farias and Iain Huffer. The end of season was marked with a fun evening packing the boats up for the winter followed by a meal in the clubhouse with cadets and helpers.

2021 has been an extremely busy and unique year for House. At the start of the year the clubhouse had to operate within strict Covid-19 restrictions, resulting in reduced opening, one-way systems, and plenty of hand sanitiser! Rather than letting the restrictions hinder the Club’s development, a business plan was pulled together to undertake a full refurbishment of the bar and kitchen.

I’m sure much of the old equipment had been installed when the clubhouse was built in 1985 and in some cases was still the original kit! So, what has been delivered?

The bar refurbishment involved replacing all the old beer taps, soft drinks dispensers and cellar equipment, installing a new system that is better suited to the Club’s bar schedule and thus significantly reducing beer wastage.

It requires minimal maintenance from volunteers, and is simple/reliable to use. A large four-door bottle fridge replaced ambient temperature storage which has allowed us to offer a much larger range of alcoholic and nonalcoholic chilled drinks without the need for using the kitchen fridges to chill stock. The back bar worktops were all replaced and the front bar re-stained and varnished.

The glasswasher and glass drying racks have been relocated and a new floor laid. New glass shelving, a backlit RFYC logo and new lighting have all made the bar a central focal point in the lounge.

The old kitchen was fully stripped out and replaced with a modern, fit-for-purpose professional kitchen that can serve light snacks to full sit-down event meals for 70+ people.

All the old equipment was sold to offset part of the cost of the new. The kitchen was fully re-wired to conform to the latest health and safety regulations, along with fitting new hygienic wall cladding and flooring.

Within the lounge area, a new tea and coffee station was created, carpets deep cleaned and new smaller round tables purchased to maximise flexibility and various usage options.

In undertaking a review of the clubhouse electrics, it was deemed necessary to install a new main electrical circuit board, due to it reaching full capacity, and not being able to source replacement parts. The new board future proofs expansion if required, as well as giving the whole wiring a much needed tidy up behind the scenes. Many metres of old cable were removed from around the clubhouse!

A new single fob entry system on the front gate and front door was installed to simplify entry for members and reduce administrative overheads.

The work didn’t stop inside. The patio furniture was repainted, the patio tidied up, and Wi-Fi extended to cover the patio and Yard and Harbour Manager’s office.

The Club website, social media and automation of behindthe-scenes activity has continued throughout the year and continues to evolve. It is assisting the Club’s operations in becoming more efficient and to reach more people, which has helped support membership growth this year.

Besides all the development activity, Covid-19 restrictions lifted partially during the sailing season, which enabled the clubhouse to open, and with it, the ability to use our newly refurbished bar and kitchen! The House team has supported several events and functions this year and we are well on the way towards generating a good return already on the investment made.

Our biggest test this year was supporting the Edinburgh Cup week. Due to the refurbishment, we were able to host all the social events in house, generating valuable revenue for the Club. Over 850 meals were served, over 350 pints poured and over 100 bottles of wine were consumed! It was a huge effort and a brilliant achievement for the Club to deliver so successfully. The feedback from competitors and guests was exceptional and has certainly put us on the map off the water as well as on it!

Our social activities certainly don’t stop there! The Fireworks with Prizegiving was recently held and we are well advanced in planning for the winter talks, the Christmas lunch, and a busy and active social calendar for next year. Expect to see the bar open more often, more food and more general social activity within the clubhouse. Other areas of focus looking ahead include Club merchandise, further clubhouse and patio improvements and website/social media evolution. Did I also mention the creation our very own RFYC branded Gin, in collaboration with Pickering’s Gin – just in time for Christmas! There is a lot to look forward to and we have exciting times ahead!

Most of the redevelopment work (except for specialist electrical or flooring work) was done through the hard work of the dedicated House team and other member volunteers. This has saved the Club a significant amount of extra expense. Volunteers have also regularly supported bar and catering activities over the year. On behalf of all members, we say a massive thank you! We are always keen to ensure that we are offering members what they want, so if you have a need, just ask and we will see what we can do for you – everything is possible!

7 YARD AND HARBOUR REPORT Brian Robertson Rear Commodore (Harbour Convenor)

The last 12 months has been a busy time for the Yard and Harbour team, with many long outstanding maintenance issues in the yard, both large and small, being addressed.

The six-man Yard and Harbour Committee has been supplemented with co-opted members, and now consists of a group of thirteen volunteers. Many of the Yard and Harbour tasks can be fairly physical, so this increased number is entirely necessary if the Yard and Harbour is to be maintained in the manner which it requires. The group is continually active and greatly supplements the work being done by our Yard and Harbour Manager, Piotr Pistor.

Regular Tuesday morning work sessions are now in place and indeed any Club member who wishes to assist with the ongoing works in the yard is welcome to come along on these mornings to help.

The harbour ground chain replacement programme requires a huge physical effort from the team. Trot 9 was renewed earlier this year and trots 10 and 11 are scheduled to be replaced before the start of next season.

Early this year, the team carried out mechanical repairs to ‘Royal Forth’, but gearbox problems persist, and more major replacement works may be required in the future.

The yard electrics were found to be in an extremely poor condition and have now been completely upgraded, with cabling replaced and double external sockets fitted throughout the yard. The bulk of this work (other than the final testing and connection which was carried out professionally) was done by Harbour team members, with great financial savings to the Club.

With the ‘new shed’ project currently in abeyance, two new containers have been purchased to act as a temporary office and workshop for Piotr. This ultimately is to allow for the abandonment of the workshop on the Pharos Pier. A new covered area has been erected by Lift-Out operations are a major undertaking annually

the Harbour team to give Piotr a covered workspace during the winter; a facility which has been badly lacking for many years.

The Pharos Pier itself continues to deteriorate but Harbour team members, assisted by George Brown & Sons operatives, successfully managed to install a number of steel supports at the north end of the pier. It is hoped that this may extend the life of the pier by a few years.

George Brown & Sons recently carried out painting works to the Club crane and also replaced the steel frame at the Club gate. They are currently investigating the 5tonne winch on the crane, which has been problematic of late, and which may require to be replaced after forty years of constant use.

A dredging programme did take place this summer, but it called for a huge effort on the part of the Harbour team as well as other volunteers. The condition of Boswall Bittern is now a matter of concern and considerable maintenance will be required if she is to continue doing this work.

Wall pointing on the external western boundary wall has been completed by the team, as has the safety fence at the south slip.

A new Harbour Agreement was reached with Forth Corinthian Yacht Club this year which will see an equal split of the East Harbour between the two Clubs. This will require the adjustment of some existing RFYC moorings, and the Harbour team will commence this work in the near future.

Yard space constraints continue to be an issue and the priority for winter boat storage must go to members who are active ‘on the water’ during the season. For this reason, members can no longer expect to use the yard solely as a year round storage facility for their boat.

A recent addition to our ‘fleet’ is the new yard tug. The operation of this is different to the previous one and members will be required to be fully trained before being allowed to use it.

With winter now approaching, the work of the Yard and Harbour team goes on, with major repairs being planned to the blue and white launces as well as the white work launch during the winter months.

None of this work could be done without the full commitment of all the members of the Yard and Harbour team and I would like to thank each and every one of them for all their hard work during the past year. I also acknowledge the considerable work done on our behalf by our Yard and Harbour Manager, Piotr Pistor, and I would also acknowledge gratefully the huge support which this Club receives from our member George Brown in the regular and willing provision of the excellent services of his company.

8 DRAGON EDINBURGH CUP AND SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP 2021 Charles Morton Chair, Organising Committee, Edinburgh Cup Being chosen to host the Dragon Edinburgh Cup, the UK championship for the class, together with their Scottish Championship in 2021 (postponed from 2020) was a very great honour, but prestige is often accompanied by anxiety and this event was no exception. The British Dragon Association had obtained a very generous donation towards the costs, and the pressure was on to provide a regatta that justified the faith of the donor and the history of the event.

A call had gone out in late 2019 seeking volunteers, and in some cases their boats, for 2020. This had been well answered, so the first challenge was translate this enthusiasm to 2021 and the response was very gratifying on both counts. Events of this standing demand the most meticulous execution on the water and we were lucky to secure the expertise of Rob Brown, ex RFYC and winner of the Edinburgh Cup in 1994, as Race Officer who recruited an expert team of Assistant Race Officers and mark layers including John McLaren from FCYC. The Harbour team turned out in strength to organise lifts in and out, and to assist boats away from the pontoon.

The House team put on a splendid performance — one visitor said catering was the best he’d experienced at a sailing event — and of course, Karen Bates our Business Manager, worked tirelessly in keeping all the administration together, and Moira Barker, our Finance Manager took care of financials during and after the event.

As to the racing, light easterly winds prevailed all week and on a couple of days the Race Officer kept the fleet ashore whilst waiting for the wind to declare itself. But once arrived, the wind was for the most part consistent and on most days the sun shone. The final race tested both the Race Officer and the competitors, with wind shifts of 20 to thirty degrees, but most of the usual suspects were near the front of the fleet and Badger was a deserved overall winner of the Edinburgh Cup (to add to her victory in the Scottish Championship earlier in the week).

Special mention must be made of the beautifully restored Bluebottle, the oldest boat in the fleet at age 73 — placed third — and the French team of Bande à Part, the furthest travelled, who were fourth. First RFYC member, although skipper and boat are now based elsewhere, was Ron James in Fei-Lin’s Flirtation, placed fifth.

A very big thank you to all those who contributed to making the event a success.
