Poštovane dame i gospodo,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

zadovoljstvo mi je pozdraviti fotografski festival Photodays koji se pod pokroviteljstvom Ministarstva kulture održava drugu godinu zaredom, u gradu Rovinju.

It is a great pleasure to greet the photography festival Photodays that takes place in Rovinj for the second year under the high patronage of the Ministry of Culture.

Fotografija je danas nedvojbeno sve prisutnija u dokumentiranju svakodnevice, neizostavni je dio informiranja putem novinskih i elektroničkih medija. Njezina stalna prisutnost u vizualnoj kulturi današnjice najčešća je kroz trendovski izričaj, eksperiment ili svjesni izbor pojedinca zbog motiviranosti izražavanja drugačijeg pristupa životu.

Today photography is without any doubt more present in capturing everyday life, and represents an indispensable part of information in news and electronic media. Its constant presence in the contemporary visual culture comes across most often through expressions of trends, experiments or conscious choices of individuals, motivated to express a different approach to life.

Treba imati na umu da je danas fotografska građa golema, disperzirana po arhivima mnogih kulturnih ustanova i privatnih kolekcija, te je zbog svojih specifičnosti neizostavna ne samo kao medij izražavanja već i kao osnova dokumentiranja. Upravo zato, fotografija je idealna za prenošenje poruke koja neponovljivo zaustavlja jedinstvenu ljepotu jedne zemlje, njezinog naroda, običaja, prirodnih raznolikosti i bogate kulturne baštine. Vjerujem da su u tom smjeru krenuli i umjetnici koji su se prijavili na ovaj natječaj i u fotografiji pronašli inspiraciju za transmisiju ideja i subjektivnih doživljaja. Vidjeti ljepotu Hrvatske na ovako velikom i reprezentativnom broju fotografija zasigurno je veličan-

We need to keep in mind the enormous quantity of today’s photographic material that is dispersed throughout archives of a multitude of cultural institutions and private collections, whilst due to its specificities it remains crucial not only as medium of expression, but also as a basis of documentation. That is the reason why photography is ideal for the transmission of messages that inimitably hold the unique beauty of a country, its people, customs, natural diversity and rich cultural heritage. I believe that this was the direction taken by artists who applied for this competition, and who took photography as an inspiration to transmit


Ljubitelji fotografije kao i posjetitelji ovog festivala imaju prigodu posvjedočiti snazi fotografskog izričaja odabranih djela koja nam daju uvid u činjenicu da svako od njih na svoj poseban način različitim pristupom dokumentira trenutak u vremenu. Ne zaustavljajući se samo na tome svaka fotografija svojom jedinstvenosti i svojom neponovljivošću živi svoj emotivni život. Svojim jakim vizualnim i umjetničkim izričajem govore o ljepoti naše domovine, njezinim prirodnim i kulturnim vrijednostima. Upravo iz tog razloga festival Photodays kao kulturno-turistički događaj kojim se inicira kvaliteta i raznovrsnost zbivanja i interes fotografske zajednice postaje nezaobilazna stanica struke, popularizirajući jednako fotografiju kao bazični medij te Hrvatsku kao nepresušni izvor motiva. Čestitam organizatorima ove manifestacije i nadam se kako će i ovogodišnji festival još više približiti umjetnost fotografiranja širokoj publici.

ideas and personal experiences. To see the beauty of Croatia in such a large and representative number of photographs, is a wonderful occasion that deserves our attention. Photography aficionados, as well as participants in this festival, have the opportunity to witness the strength of the selected works’ photographic expression offering us an insight into the fact that each and every one of them, in its own unique way, captures a moment in time. Each photograph also lives its own emotional existence in its uniqueness and distinctiveness. They speak of our homeland’s beauty, its natural and cultural values through their own strong visual and artistic expression. For this reason the Photodays festival, as a cultural and touristic event which initiates quality and diversity of the scene, as well as stimulates the interest of the photographic community, becomes an important event for the profession, promoting photography as a fundamental medium and Croatia as an enduring source of motifs. I congratulate the organizers for this event and I hope that this year’s festival will bring the art of photography closer to the general public.

Neobično mi je drago što vas i ove godine mogu pozdraviti iz fotogeničnog Rovinja koji će na završnici Photodaysa 5 i 6. lipnja zasigurno biti respektabilni centar fotografskih znalaca ali i svih ljubitelja fotografije.

I am extremely glad that I can greet you again this year from photogenic Rovinj, which will definitely be a respectable center for photographic experts, and also for all photography fans at the finals of Photodays on the 5th and 6th June.

Photodays je manifestacija koja ima za cilj pozicionirati i valorizirati struku u njenoj suvremenoj aktualnosti, ali istovremeno poštivajući i sve njene tradicionalne kulturološke i umjetničke vrijednosti. Od samog početka pomno analiziramo gotovo sva svjetska fotografska događanja, učimo, komuniciramo s uglednim predstavnicima struke i uvodimo promjene. Redefinirali smo sustav kategorija i nagrada te uveli počasnu nagradu za životno djelo koje će ove godine dobiti Marija Braut - legenda hrvatske fotografije. Domaćim članovima žirija pridodali smo imena iz samog vrha svjetske fotografske scene.

Photodays is an event which aims to position and evaluate the profession in its contemporary topicality, and at the same time respect all its traditional cultural and artistic values. From the very beginning we have carefully analyzed almost all the world’s photographic events, we learn, communicate with renowned representatives of the profession and introduce changes.The system of categories and awards has been redefined, and we have introduced an honorary life achievement award, which will this year be awarded to Marija Braut - a legend in Croatian photography. The local jury members have been coupled with the names from the very top of the world’s photography scene.

Na ovogodišnji se natječaj prijavilo 690 domaćih autora s preko 10 700 radova što je dvostruko više nego prošle godine i predstavlja apsolutni rekord u Hrvatskoj.

There are 690 applied authors from Croatia with over 10,700 works, which is twice as much as last year and represents an absolute record in Croatia.

Na završnicu manifestacije u Rovinj nam dolaze mnogi domaći ali i inozemni predstavnici struke. Nadamo se lijepom vremenu i pravom fotografskom spektaklu.

Renowned guests from the USA, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy and others are coming to Rovinj.

Fotografi i njihova djela neobičan su autorski spoj darovitosti, emocija, ponosa, osobitosti, strasti, meni vrlo drag.Uistinu mi je zadovoljstvo što Vas mnoge osobno poznajem te Vam ovim putem još jednom zahvaljujem na suradnji s napomenom da tijekom naredne godine svi zajedno, svatko svojim aktivnostima, učinimo još više za promicanje fotografije kao osnovne komponente vizualne komunikacije u estetskoj kulturi....

The photographers and their works are an unusual authorial combination of talent, emotion, pride, peculiarity, passion and are very dear to me personally. I often recall the numerous questions referring to the selection of photographs for the application to the competition: To which category should certain photographs be sent? Should one apply photographs as a series or as individual items? Which child to pick as the best?

Tehnika zapisivanja prizora iz stvarnosti na sloju materijala koji je osjetljiv na svjetlost je tehnička definicija fotografije, međutim kao i mnoge druge definicije niti ova ne govori mnogo o tome što fotografija zbilja jest. Čini mi se puno prikladnije fotografiju definirati pomoću grčkih riječi iz kojih je pojam fotografija nastao: phos (“svjetlo”) i graphis (“pero”, “kist”) koje zajedno znače „crtanje pomoću svjetla“. U ovoj se „definiciji“ mistika fotografije dotiče na puno suptilniji način.

The process of producing images of objects on photosensitive surfaces is the technical definition of photography, but, as other definitions, it does not tell us much about what photography really is. It seems more appropriate to define it using the Greek words from which the term photography originated: phos (“light”) and graphis (“stylus”, “paintbrush”) which, when put together, mean „drawing with light“. In this „definition“, the mystery of photography is described in a much more subtle way.

Možda su ove definicije na sličan način nepravedne prema temama koje opisuju. Turizam i fotografija zbog toga mogu podijeliti zajedničku definiciju, a ta je da oboje realan život pretvaraju u novu vrijednost, dijele je sa svojom publikom/gostima i na kraju je vraćaju u prostor gdje nastaju obogaćujući ga novim naslijeđem. Fotografija kao i turizam može biti kvalitetna ili nekvalitetna, autentična ili neinventivna, autorska ili puko komercijalna. U Maistri težimo stvaranju turizma koji će biti utemeljen na autentičnosti, kvaliteti i originalnosti. Za uspjeh u tome, jednako kao i za stvaranje fotografije koja nosi te iste vrijednosti, nije presudna realnost prostora već emocija. Ova dva prekrasna fenomena modernog društva dijele mnogo toga zajedničkog i mnogo toga međusobno poklanjaju. Kroz našu manifestaciju turizam je na nov način fotografiji poklonio Rovinj, a fotografija je Rovinju poklonila Photodays. Dobro došli!

Tourism is “the sum of the phenomena and relationships arising from the travel and stay of nonresidents, insofar as they do not lead to permanent residence and are not connected with any earning activity.” This is one of the most acceptable definitions of tourism in the world, but it still does not tell us much what tourism really is. Perhaps these definitions similarly don’t do justice to the topics they describe. Therefore, tourism and photography can share a common definition according to which they add different value to reality, share it with their audiences/guests and, finally, return it into space where they created it, enriching it with new heritage. Like tourism, photography can be of good and poor quality, authentic or uninventive, authorial or purely commercial. In Maistra, we strive to create tourism based on authenticity, quality and originality. Success, much like success in creating a photography that carries these same values, does not rely so much on the actual space, but the emotion. These two lovely phenomena of the modern society have many things in common and intertwine in many ways. Through our manifestation, tourism has presented photography to Rovinj in a new way and photography has presented Rovinj with Photodays. Welcome!

Turizam je skup odnosa i pojava koje proizlaze iz putovanja i boravka posjetitelja nekog mjesta ako se tim boravkom ne zasniva stalno prebivalište i ako s takvim boravkom nije povezana nikakva privredna djelatnost. Ovo je jedna od najprihvatljivijih definicija turizma u svijetu, međutim i ona ne govori mnogo o tome što turizam doista jest.

FOTOGRAFIJA U ERI DIGITALNE NADSTVARNOSTI

PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE ERA OF DIGITAL HYPERREALITY

Nepopravljivi nostalgičari skloni bolećivoj sentimentalnosti mogli bi reći - ako bi ih uopće itko išta o tome želio zapitati - da je fotografija digitalizacijom izgubila svoju predmetnost. Umjesto vizualnih i taktilnih senzacija koje se pri premetanju radova izvedenih na fotografskom papiru spajaju u jedinstven doživljaj, danas smo suočeni samo s optičkim efektom posredovanim ekranom računala. Digitalizacijom, fotografija je izgubila i format koji je u gotovo svakoj likovnoj i vizualnoj umjetnosti konstitutivni dio djela, jer se dimenzije unificirano svode na veličinu ekrana; mogu biti manje, ali ne i veće.

The incorrigible nostalgic individuals that favour pathetic sentimentality could say - if anyone would even ask for their opinion - that photography with digitalisation has lost its subject. Instead of the visual and tactile sensations that, with the transposition of works created on photographic paper are united into a unique experience, today we are faced only with the optic effect through the mediation of a computer screen. With digitalisation, photography also lost its format that is a constitutive part of a work in almost every visual art, because the dimensions are unified and reduced to the size of the screen. They can be smaller, but not larger.

Ali nam je digitalna fotografija donijela i neke velike prednosti od kojih je možda najveća njezina oštrina, jasnoća, kristalična pixel rezonanca koja na podlozi plazma-ekrana stvarnost pretvara u virtualnu nadstvarnost. Digitalno generiranje slike također je tehnološka novost koja je proširila značenjska polja i opsege medija.

But digital photography has given us some great advantages. One of the greatest one might be its sharpness, clarity, crystal pixel resonance that on the background of a plasma screen turns reality into virtual hyper-reality. The digital generation of a photograph is also a technological novelty that has widened the semantic field and the scope of the media.

Ali ono što je možda najznačajnije za jednu fotografsku manifestaciju kao što je PHOTODAYS, jest brzina protoka slikovnih informacija. Najčešće više nema razvijanja, sušenja, pakiranja, slanja poštom i plaćanja troškova, u krajnjoj liniji, već se cijeli postupak odvija s nekoliko upora na tipkovnicu, mada organizatori potpuno uvažavaju i one klasične postupke i opcije. Zbrajajući i oduzimajući, mogli bismo reći da smo u plusu.

Perhaps the most significant thing for one photographic manifestation like PHOTODAYS is the speed of the flow of pictorial information. Most often there is no more developing, drying, and packing, sending by post and paying postage costs. Ultimately, the whole process is completed with several clicks on the keyboard, although the organisers accept the classical procedures and op-


A pobjednici će, kao i uvijek u ovakvim slučajevima, biti rezultanta ne/znanja, ne/stručnosti, ne/informiranosti i senzibilnosti ukupnosti zbroja članova Ocjenjivačkog suda i međusobnih silnica koje grupe ovakve vrste proizvode. Zato sud nas kojima je dana ta mogućnost nije konačan, već je tek jedna od usputnih stanica na putu koji zovemo fotografija, a prema krajnjem cilju koji se zove umjetnost.

tions as well. Considering it all, we could say it is a plus for us. This might be the reason why this year’s, second in a row, photographic festival is so well-attended. The number of 5,200 photographs and 350 authors who entered the Competition in its first edition now rose to 10,800 works and 690 authors. In this great number of creations very little was worthless, so we can conclude that the authors were their own first censors - in a good sense of the word - and photographs of high quality standards dominated. It was difficult to narrow and select ten authors in each category and even more difficult to select the best three. To that extent, the selection of the winner should have been easy. And the winners, as always in these cases, will be the result of (no) knowledge, (no) competence, (no) information and sensibility of all the members of the Jury and the mutual forces that such groups produce. Therefore, our judgement, of the people who were given this possibility, is not final, but only one of the incidental stations on a journey that we call photography towards the final goal that is called art.

Možda je i zato ovogodišnji, drugi po redu fotografski festival toliko posjećen; broj od 5.200 fotografija i 350 autora prijavljenih na Natječaj prvog izdanja, povećao se ove godine na 10.800 pristiglih radova 690 autora. U tom je velikom broju ostvarenja bilo malo bezvrijednog, pa možemo zaključiti da su autori bili svoji prvi cenzori - u dobrom smislu riječi - a prevladavale su fotografije visokog kvalitativnog standarda. Teško je u svakoj od kategorija bilo izabrati deset autora za uži izbor, a još teže troje najboljih. Utoliko bi lakši trebao biti izbor pobjednika.

Povjesničar umjetnosti, arheolog, likovni kritičar, muzealac (u stručnom muzejskom zvanju muzejskog savjetnika od 1996.), konzervator, publicist. Diplomirao povijest umjetnosti i arheologiju na Filozofskom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Zagrebu. Od 1980. zaposlen u Modernoj galeriji u Rijeci kao kustos, te od 1990. do 1999. kao ravnatelj.

Art historian, archaeologist, art critic, museologist (a museum counsellor since 1996), conservationist, publicist.Received his B.A. in Art History and Archaeology from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb in 1979. Curator at the Modern Gallery in Rijeka in 1980 and its Director from 1990 to 1999.

Stipendije za profesionalno usavršavanje na Reinwardt Academy for Museology u Leidenu, Nizozemska, 1985. i u Centre for Contemporary Art u Clevelandu, SAD, 1994. Utemeljio dvije međunarodne izložbe: Ex tempore u Opatiji (1983.) i Biennale mladih Mediterana u Rijeci (1993.). Reorganizirao Međunarodnu izložbu crteža, također u Rijeci, 1990. Samostalno koncipirao, postavio i napisao predgovore katalozima za preko 250 samostalnih, te oko 150 skupnih izložbi u galerijama i muzejima u Hrvatskoj i u svijetu. Objavio preko 300 stručnih tekstova (likovne kritike, analize, osvrti, prikazi, intervjui, putopisi itsl.). Hrvatski povjerenik na 47. Venecijanskom Biennalu, 1997. Odlikovan za izuzetne doprinose u kulturi, 1996. i dobitnik Nagrade “Neven Šegvić” za znanstvenoistraživački rad na području arhitekture, 1998.

Recipient of the Reinwardt Academy for Museology scholarship (Leiden, The Netherlands) in 1985 and the Contemporary Art scholarship (Cleveland, USA) in 1994. Founder of two international exhibitions: Ex tempore in Opatija (1983) and Biennale of Young Artists from the Mediterranean in Rijeka (1993). Reorganized the International Exhibition of Drawings in Rijeka in 1990. Conceptualized, installed and wrote prefaces to catalogues for more than 250 independent and 150 group exhibitions in galleries and museums in Croatia and around the world. Published more than 300 art critiques, analyses, reviews, surveys, interviews, travelogues etc. Commissioner for Croatia at the 47th Venice Biennale in 1997. Honoured for exceptional contributions to culture in 1996 and received the “Neven Šegvić” award for his research work in the field of architecture in 1998.

Fotografija me očarala kada s 18 godina, a s 22 godine sam se odlučio njom i baviti. Studirao sam fotografiju 3 godine na institutu INRACI u Briselu u Belgiji. Danas radim i živim uglavnom u Parizu. Svoj rad opisujem kao stalnu potrebu za kretanjem i razvojem te neprestanu potragu za nečim što je neopipljivo, ali u čemu se odražava svijet oko nas. Idealizacija ljepote i savršenstva mogla bi ukratko opisati moj svijet estetike. Ne pokušavam predstaviti stvarnost, već je filtrirati i prikazati kao zamišljeni svijet u kojem je prisutna elegancija, šik i blještavilo. Ipak, važno mi je uvijek isticati da moj rad nije zapravo samo moj, on je plod zajedničkog stvaralaštva čitavog tima za koji sam vrlo vezan. Njihov trud i rad smatram barem jednako značajnim kao svoj, a njihovo okruženje podjednako me inspirira i ispunjava i kao čovjeka i kao profesionalca.

At the age of 18 photography became my passion and I decided to make it my future career when I was 22. I studied photography for three years in Brussels (Belgium) at INRACI. Now I mostly live and work in Paris. I would describe my work as being based on the constant need to move and evolve! It is a continuous search for something that cannot be touched but is contained in the world around us. An idealization of beauty and perfection could be a brief description of my world of aesthetics. I don’t try to represent reality but I try to filter it and through this imaginary world attempt to show its elegance, chic and glitter. For me, the most important thing about my work is not to think of it as only mine since it is the product of teamwork! I am very attached to my team and I consider their work just as important as my own! Working in a team for me means being surrounded by people that you appreciate not only as professionals but as people as well!

Enrico Bossan se pridružio “Fabrici” (Centar za istraživanje komunikacijegrupe Benetton) 2005. godine kao voditelj odjela za fotografiju. U travnju 2007. postaje urednik časopisa COLORS. Njegove se fotografije redovito pojavljuju u međunarodnim časopisima od 1985, te su izlagane na PhotoFestu u Houstonu, Bienalu međunarodne fotografije u Torinu i Amsterdamu, Arlesu, Milanu, Rimu, Saloniki, Tokiju i Veneciji.

Enrico Bossan joined Fabrica (Benetton group communications research center) in 2005 as the Head of the Photography department. In April 2007 he became the Editor of COLORS magazine. Since 1985, his photos have appeared regularly in international magazines and have been displayed at the Houston PhotoFest, the International Photography Biennale in Turin and in Amsterdam, Arles, Milan, Rome, Salonica, Tokyo and Venice.

Osvojio je nagradu Kodak za profesionalnu fotografiju 1987. godine. Njegova ranija izdanja uključuju Pechino-Parigi (1986.), putovanje od Azije do Europe, i Exit (1992.), priča o Americi iz dvaju kuteva, napravljeno u suradnji s fotografom Robertom Kochom. He won the Kodak award for professional photography in 1987. His earlier publications include Pechino-Parigi (1986), a journey from Asia to Europe and Exit (1992), a tale of America “from two angles”, produced in collaboration with the photographer Roberto Koch. In 2000 his books focused on healthcare and hospital life: Esodo, views of daily life in a shelter for AIDS victims and Un Privilegio Difficile, a black-and-white photo report for Cuamm Doctors With Africa on socio-medical cooperation in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Michael je radio na kampanjama za SPEEDO, NIKE, BILLABONG, DITA EYEWEAR, RANGE ROVER, DODGE, FILA, i VON ZIPPER. Upravo je završio dugotrajnu podvodnu ekspediciju na Otočju Galapagos za švicarskog proizvođača satova IWC koji će poduprijeti Charles Darwin Foundation i UNESCO. Michael je nedavno dokumentirao prvi film studija MARVEL pod naslovom IRONMAN, te X-MEN ORIGINS WOLVERINE, HANCOCK, MAX PAYNE, ENTOURAGE, 24, CRASH, THE BEAST i mnoge druge filmske i televizijske projekte. Projekt kojemu je najviše privržen je njegov novi dobrotvorni rad pod nazivom KIDS CLICKING KIDS koji je započeo s ART OF ELYSIUM. KCK donosi fotografije u svijet bolničke djece od kojih mnoga nikad nisu držala kameru u rukama. “Gledati kako se djeca koja podnose veliku bol osmjehuju dok fotografiraju, iskustvo je koje nadilazi sva ostala,” ističe Muller. Nakon petnaest godina prebivanja, putovanja i rada u Los Angelesu, New Yorku i Parizu, tridesetosmogodišnji Michael Los Angeles opet zove svojim domom. Oženjen je i ima tri kćeri.

His work has graced the covers and pages of magazines including: Vanity Fair, Elle, Rolling Stone, Harper’s Bazaar, Flaunt, The New York Times, Espn, Filter, Esquire, Interview and Time Magazine. Michael has worked on campaigns for SPEEDO, NIKE, BILLABONG, DITA EYEWEAR, RANGE ROVER, DODGE, FILA, and VON ZIPPER. He also just finished an extensive Scuba Expedition in The Galapagos Islands for the Swiss watchmaker IWC that is going to help support The Charles Darwin Foundation and UNESCO. Michael has recently documented MARVEL Studios first film IRONMAN, as well as X-MEN ORIGINS WOLVERINE, HANCOCK, MAX PAYNE, ENTOURAGE, 24, CRASH, THE BEAST as well as many other film and television projects. The closest project to Michael’s heart is his new Charity called KIDS CLICKING KIDS, which he started with the ART OF ELYSIUM. KCK brings photography into hospitals to a variety of children, many who have never taken a photograph in their life. “Watching children smile and laugh while in such pain from taking photos is an experience that supercedes any that come to mind” says Muller. After 15 years of living, traveling, and working in Los Angeles, New York, and Paris, at the age of thirty eight, Michael once again calls Los Angeles his home. He is married and has three daughters.

The first active trading Art Fund in Lichtenstein. 2008 - Co - founder and curator for the art part of the “St. Moritz Art Masters”, an art, music and cultural festival held in St. Moritz. Co-founder and partner of the Wolf Roth & Partners Fine Art Gallery in Miami.

They’ve also been jury presidents or jury members at awards shows such as the London International Awards, Graphis, New York`s Cresta Awards, the British D&AD awards, the Moscow International Advertising Festival, the Magdalena Festival in Maribor and the Golden Drum Festival in Portorož. Their work has been published in many international professional publications.

MARIJA BRAUT Rođena u Celju, LRS 1929. g. Od 1941. g. živi, školuje se i radi u Zagrebu. Fotografski početak 1967., u atelijeru Toše Dabca čija je učenica i suradnica do 1970. godine. Od 1968. do 1972. radi kao fotografkinja u Galerijama grada Zagreba. Nakon toga postaje samostalna umjetnica. Od 1969. članica je ULUPUH-a i Fotokluba Zagreb. Članica je ZUH-a do umirovljenja 1988. Prva samostalna izložba u Galeriji Studentskog centra (s P. Dabcem). Od tada samostalno izlaže preko stotinjak izložbi u zemlji i inozemstvu. Sudjeluje na mnogim skupnim izložbama - Fotoklub, ULUPUH, Zagrebački salon itd. Surađuje u časopisima, publikacijama pretežno umjetničkog likovnog sadržaja (katalozi i monografije likovnih umjetnika). Djela se nalaze u mnogim javnim institucijama HGK, veleposlanstva RH, Elektra Zagreb, Lijepa naša. Živi i radi u Zagrebu, članica je kluba CroArtPhoto uz čiju potporu i pomoć je ova izložba i realizirana.

“Najpoznatije fotografije” Postava izložbe fotografija Marije Braut u crkvici Sv. Tome Apostola uključuje najpoznatije fotografije koje su obilježile karijeru poznate fotografkinje kojoj će u sklopu završne svečanosti fotografskog festivala biti uručena službena nagrada “Kadar” za životno djelo. Marija Braut was born in Celje in Slovenia in 1929. Since 1941 she has lived, has been educated and worked in Zagreb. She started working in photography in Toše Dabac’s atelier as a student and assistant from 1967 to 1970. From 1968 to 1970 she worked as a photographer in the Galleries of the City of Zagreb. After that she became an independent artist. Since 1969 she has been a member of the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts, the Zagreb Photo Club. She was a member of the Community of Artists of Croatia until she retired. She held her first independent exhibition in the gallery of the Student’s Centre (with T. Dabac). She has displayed her works since then at more than a hundred exhibitions in Croatia and abroad. She has participated in many group exhibitions - photo clubs, the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts, the Zagreb Saloon, etc. She has cooperated with magazines and publications mainly dealing with artistic visual content (catalogues and books of visual artists). Her works can be found in many public institutions - the Croatian Chamber of Economy, the embassies of Republic Croatia, Elektra Zagreb and Lijepa naša. She lives and works in Zagreb, she is a member of the CroArtPhoto Club, which has also helped organize this exhibition.

“The most famous photographs” The exhibition of photographs of Marija Braut, in the small church of St. Thomas the apostle, includes the most known photographs that have marked the career of the famous photographer who will be granted the Life Achievement Award “Kadar” during the final ceremony of the photographic festival. BEST OF HASSELBLAD MASTERS Hasselblad Masters Award je najprestižnija nagrada fotografske industrije. Nagrade se dodjeljuju za doprinose i izvanredna postignuća u fotografskoj umjetnosti, prema kriteriju izvrsne fotografske sposobnosti, kreativnosti, kompozicije, konceptualne snage i tehničke vještine. Iako su autori i njihove fotografije potpuno različiti: mladi, stari, sa zapada, sa istoka, klasičari, eksperimentalisti, tradicionalisti, modernisti i futuristi, vjerojatno im je samo jedno zajedničko - majstori su koji fotografijom oduševljavaju na prvi pogled i koriste Hasselblad opremu. Izložbu organiziranu u sklopu fotografskog festivala Photodays, sačinjavat će 30-ak fotografija autora: August Bradle, Barry Ryan, Carl Lyttle, Chase Jarvis, Chris Simpson, Claus-Peter Dudek, Dominique Amphonesinh, Hans Strand, Joel Meyerowitz, Kevin Then, Laurence Laborie , Marco Grob, Morfi Jimenez Mercado, Paolo Esposito, Peter Mathis, Raya, Russel James, Stuart Weston, Victor Billy Hells, Yanan Li. U prizemlju muzeja postavljeno je 10-tak fotografija Hasselblad kamera: prva izrađena Hasselblad kamera, modeli koji su se koristili u svemiru, „zlatni modeli“, najnovija H3DII digitalna kamera 50 MP, fotografija gospodina Victora Hasselblada: Također, bit će izloženi stariji modeli Hasselblad kamera u privatnom vlasništvu.

The Hasselblad Masters Award is the most prestigious award of the photographic industry. The awards are granted for contributions and outstanding achievements in photographic art according to the criteria of excellent photographic capability, creativity, composition, conceptual force and technical skill. Although the authors and their photographs are completely different, some are young, some are old, from the West and from the East, of classical, experimental, traditional, modern and futurist expression, they probably have one thing in common - they are masters, who with photography delight at first sight. The exhibition organised within the photographic festival Photodays will contain about 30 photographs of the following authors: August Bradle, Barry Ryan, Carl Lyttle, Chase Jarvis, Chris Simpson, Claus-Peter Dudek, Dominique Amphonesinh, Hans Strand, Joel Meyerowitz, Kevin Then, Laurence Laborie, Marco Grob, Morfi Jimenez Mercado, Paolo Esposito, Peter Mathis, Raya, Russel James, Stuart Weston, Victor Billy Hells And Yanan Li.

Izložba će biti otvorena od 5. lipnja do 13. lipnja , u Zavičajnom muzeju grada Rovinja.

Around ten photographs of the Hasselblad camera will be displayed on the ground floor of the Museum: the first ever made Hasselblad camera, models that have been used in space, the „golden models“, the latest H3DII digital camera 50 MP, a photograph of mister Victor Hasselblad. Also the older models of the Hasselblad camera that are in a private collection will be displayed.

The exhibition remains open from June 5 to June 13, 2009 at the Rovinj Heritage Museum.

Gloria: “15 years with you”

Često se kaže da fotografije govore više od riječi. Da u tome ima i te kako istine, majstori riječi priznat će majstorima fotografije. Jer, pravo je umijeće kamerom uhvatiti trenutak, treptaj oka, pogled, nečije lice koje je poput zatvorene školjke ili otvorene knjige: na kojem se zrcale vedrina, sreća ili ushit, ali i zabrinutost, tuga, tragovi proživljene boli.

It is often said that photographs are worth a thousand words. The masters of words will admit it is true. It takes skill to catch the moment with the camera, to catch the blink of an eye, a look, somebody’s face that resembles a closed shell or an open book; the face that reflects brightness, happiness or rapture, as well as concern, sorrow or traces of experienced pain.

Svaku priču u Gloriji u proteklih petnaest godina u stopu je slijedila vrhunska fotografija, bilo kao dodatni “začin”, ili je fotografija sama potaknula priču. Stoga je svaka zanimljiva tema kompletna tek kad je dokumentirana fotografijom. Premda se Glorijini fotografi razlikuju, i generacijski i po tome što ih najviše zanima, svatko od njih ima i svoj prepoznatljiv rukopis. A otisak autora vidljiv je svaki tjedan kad se lista novi broj Glorije.

During the last 15 years, every story in Gloria has been accompanied by a top-quality photograph, whether it was an additional spice or motivation for the story. Therefore, every interesting topic is complete only after it has been documented by a photograph. Although Gloria’s news photographers differ from each other in regard to their age and to their field of interest, each of them has a recognizable style. And the author’s imprint is visible in the fresh issue of Gloria every week.

CROPIX: “Cropix 2008”

Cropix je najveća hrvatska fotoagencija s preko 80 fotoreportera te pokriva gotovo svaki kutak zemlje.

Cropix is the biggest Croatian photo agency with over 80 news photographers and it covers almost every corner of the country.

Izložba je presjek radova nekolicine fotoreportera a tema nije isključivo novinski događaj već i njihovo sasvim osobno zapažanje događaja i ljudi oko sebe. Time izložene fotografije sadrže nekoliko dimenzija; informaciju, osobni stav i likovno-fotografski izraz. To je ujedno i ono što nastojimo njegovati u fotoagenciji Cropix: informacija kroz osobni pečat autora.

The exhibition is a cross-section view of works of few news photographers, and the topic is a personal observation of events and people around the authors, as well as a newspaper event. That is why the displayed photos contain several dimensions; information, personal attitude and artistic-photographic expression. These are also values that we pursue in Cropix: information personally marked by the author.

Croatian Photographic Association: “Heritage - Photo Workshops for the Young “

Hrvatski fotosavez je od 1995. godine do danas proveo više od 120 fotoradionica za mlade osnovnoškolskog i srednjoškolskog uzrasta u najrazličitijim krajevima Hrvatske.

The CPA has, since 1995, organized more than 120 workshops for the young, including elementary and secondary school children, in all parts of Croatia.

Budući da je turizam zbog svoje masovnosti stvorio u fotografiji jake stereotipe pa i predrasude o motivima, veoma je teško u prostorima izloženim stalnim pogledima, ostvariti novu drugačiju fotografiju i pritom ukazati na golemu i bogatu baštinu kojom smo okruženi, unutar koje živimo.

Since tourism has created strong stereotypes, even prejudices in photo motifs, due to its massive scale, it is very difficult to realize new different photographs in spaces displayed for constant viewing and still point out the enormous and rich heritage that surrounds us.

Fotoradionice Hrvatskog fotosaveza za mlade odvijaju se malo podalje od centra, podalje od velikih turističkih gužvi, u intimi malenih mjesta, pučke tradicije, u veličanstvenosti golemih prostranstva prirodne baštine.

Photo workshops for the young, organized by the Croatian Photographic Association, take place a little further from the center, further from big tourist crowds, in the intimacy of small places, folk tradition, in the magnificence of immense spaces of natural heritage.

Ove su fotografije izbor iz ogromnog broja snimljenih radova, a mogle bi, osobito „fotografsku“ publiku potaknuti na istraživanje, bilježenje, vrednovanje i očuvanje hrvatske kulturne i prirodne baštine.

These photos are a selection of a great number of images. They could inspire the audience, especially photographers, to explore, register, value and preserve Croatian cultural and natural heritage.

FOTOmag : “sedam godina” U trenutku kada se pojavio FOTOmag je bio jedini hrvatski fotografski časopis. Prateći fotografsku tehniku na našem tržištu, educirajući cijelu generaciju kako novopečenih fotografa, pratili smo rad kako domaćih, tako i stranih autora. Danas je FOTOmag mjesečnik koji je od samih početaka do danas ostao ono čemu je namijenjen - praktični vodič kroz svijet fotografije. Sa 37 opširno obrađenih tema, preko tisuću objavljenih fotografija čitatelja, nekoliko stotina testiranih fotografskih uređaja te prateći trendove u fotografiji FOTOmag je bio i ostao štivo uz koje su stasali mnogi mladi fotografi. Na izložbi je predstavljeno nekoliko autora koji su svoje prve radove objavili u FOTOmagu, ali i nekoliko etabliranih autora, priznatih umjetnika koji su od prvih brojeva bili uz FOTOmag i pomogli u njegovom stvaranju.

FOTOmag : “seven years” The first issue of FOTOmag appeared on news stands in the summer of 2002. At that moment FOTOmag was the only Croatian photographic magazine. Following the techniques in photography on our market, educating an entire generation of new photographers, we have kept an eye on the work of both local and foreign authors. Nowadays, FOTOmag monthly magazine, from its very beginnings until today, remained what it was intended to be - a practical guide through the world of photography. With 37 extensively elaborated topics, over one thousand published readers` photographs, several hundred tested photographic devices, following the trends in photography, FOTOmag was and remained a magazine that many young photographers were raised on. At this exhibition we are presenting several authors who have published their first works in FOTOmag, but also several acclaimed authors and prominent artists who supported FOTOmag from its first issue and helped in its creation.

Nije slučajno što je Frano Supilo upravo u Rijeci 1900. godine pokrenuo svoj dnevnik, jer je tada, kao i danas, pogled na hrvatsku stvarnost i hrvatsku budućnost iz Rijeke malo drukčiji.

It was not by chance that, in 1900, Frano Supilo started his daily paper in Rijeka, since then, just as today, the view of Croatian reality and Croatian future was slightly different than elsewhere.

“Novi list” je još uvijek tu i zbog onoga što je Supilo činio, zbog onoga kakav je i on bio. A bio je pragmatičan, inovativan, spreman na suradnju, ali uvijek svoj, čvrst, jasan, pošten. Valjda samo takve novine mogu preživjeti različite režime i društva i biti medij koji pomiče granice demokracije. Na izložbi su predstavljeni radovi onih koji su zaslužili da ih se poimence spomene: Ognjen Alujević, Marin Aničić, Roni Brmalj, Livio Černjul, Sergej Drechsler, Petar Fabijan, Robert Fajt, Marko Gracin, Darko Jelinek, Silvano Ježina, Vedran Karuza, Dado Kovačević, Denis Lovrović, Nenad Reberšak, Sandro Rubinić, Damir Škomrlj, Ivica Tomić.

Novi list is still around owing to Supilo’s work, because of who he was. He was a pragmatist, innovative, ready for cooperation, but still himself, firm, clear and honest. It seems that only a newspaper like this one could have lived through different regimes and societies and be the medium that moves the boundaries of democracy. “GANT” WORkshop The fashion workshop is geared towards participants that have an interest in fashion photography and wish to expand their existing skills. A basic understanding of photography, camera, lighting equipment and Photoshop is necessary.


Ova radionica podučava u stvarnom okružju fotografije modnog editoriala, a oblikovana je kako bi pomogla u izgradnji portfolija na natjecateljskoj razini i razvila razumijevanje unutarnjeg koda industrije. Uz autentične, profesionalne produkcijske ekipe (modele, šminkera, frizera, stilista), ova radionica pokazuje na koji se način ispravno radi u modnoj fotografiji. Pri tome se temelji na tradiciji uspješnih modnih časopisa i stvaranju fotografija koje se mogu natjecati na razini višoj od amaterske fotografije.

This workshop is taught in the real world of fashion editorial photography, designed to help build portfolios on a competitive level and develop an understanding of the inside codes of the industry. Providing authentic, professional production teams (models, makeup artist, hairdresser, wardrobe stylist...), this workshop is about the dos-and-don’ts of shooting fashion correctly, in the tradition of successful fashion magazines and creating photos that can compete at a level higher than self-produced photography.

“Hasselblad” radionica: “Portreti”

“Hasselblad” workshop: “PORTRAITS”

Intencija radionice je prikazati kvalitetu snimaka snimljenih fotoaparatom Hasselblad, a radionici može prisustvovati 10 fotografa koji se mogu upoznati s opremom i postavljati pitanja o načinu snimanja. U prostoru Zavičajnog muzeja grada Rovinja biti će postavljen studio za portretiranje i printer EPSON 7880 na kojem će biti printane fotografije do formata 60 x 90 cm.

The intention of this workshop is displaying the quality of images shot by the Hasselblad camera. Up to 10 photographers can participate and get familiar with the equipment and ask questions about the mode of making photos. In the County Museum of Rovinj, a studio for portraying will be set up, and it will include the EPSON 7880 printer that will print photos up to size 60X90 cm.

Malo tko nije čuo za Mare Milin, vrsnu umjetnicu fotografije, posebice modne. A kako je sve počelo, najbolje će vam objasniti ona sama: “Nakon završetka studija dizajna u Zagrebu namjera mi je bila vratiti se u rodni Zadar, no fotografija mi je pomrsila planove. U fotografiju sam se zaljubila na drugoj godini studija. Noćima ne bih spavala, nego bih uživala u tamnoj komori u potkrovlju Arhitektonskoga fakulteta. Smrdjela sam po fiksiru i sve su mi majice bile uništene zbog kemikalija. Ali, to je bio i ostao neopisivi gušt.” Prva prilika bio joj je modni editorijal 2001. u Cosmopolitanu s kojim je ušla u svijet mode i glamoura. Moda ide naprijed, no Mare Milin voli provjerene, tradicionalne vrijednosti: “Volim film i mislim da ga ništa ne može zamijeniti. There are not many people who have not heard of Mare Milin, an excellent photographer, in particular fashion photography. And the artist herself will best explain how it all started: “After finishing the School of Design in Zagreb, I intended to return to my hometown Zadar, but photography upset my future plans. I fell in love with photography in my second year of studying. I wouldn’t sleep at night, but instead enjoyed spending my time in the darkroom that was in the University of Architecture’s attic. I smelt of sodium thiosulphate and all of my shirts were ruined because of the chemicals I used. However, I greatly enjoyed myself”. Her first big chance was the fashion editorial for Cosmopolitan in 2001, which was her gateway to the world of fashion and glamour. Fashion pushes forward, but Mare Milin stays loyal to authentic traditional values: “I love film and in my opinion nothing can replace it. I haven’t neglected my artistic side or forgotten how to react to the world around me and inside me with my art. I am happy when I take shots of my strolls, my days, moods, my journeys….”

“POLICE” RADIONICA Radionica je usmjerena prema sudonicima koje zanima modna fotografija. Preduvjet je osnovno razumijevanje fotografije, fotoaparata i obrade fotografije. Prema zamisli multitalentirane umjetnice i kreativne, umjetničke direktorice ove radionice, Mare Milin, interpretacija je specifična, riječ je o low-tech pristupu suvremenoj tehnologiji koji rezultira tehnički i estetski zanimljivim rezultatima. Obično se ovakve modne fotografije mogu vidjeti u časopisima poput ID-a, ili ih susrećemo kod fotografa koji su proslavili ovaj stil: Juergen Teller, Terry Richardson, Bettina Rheims, Corinne Day i sl...

“POLICE” workshop This workshop will focus on the participants who are interested in the fashion photography. The requirement is the basic understanding of photography, camera and image processing. According to the concept of Mare Milin, multitalented artist and the creative, art director of this workshop, the interpretation is specific, the emphasis is on the low-tech approach to modern technology which produces interesting results in the technical and artistic sense. This kind of photography can normally be seen in magazines such as ID, or found in the work of photographers who made this style famous: Juergen Teller, Terry Richardson, Bettina Rheims, Corrine Day, etc.

What is Color Management and what is it used for?

Kalibracija, treba li mi to? ili Zašto moja fotka na printeru ne ispada kao na ekranu? Što će se kasnije desiti sa mojom fotografijom? Ili zašto moja fotka u Jutarnjem ne izgleda kao ona u National Geographicu?

PREDAVAČ: Dean Žvorc (Zagreb, 1967) diplomirao na Grafičkom fakultetu u Zagrebu na katedri Fotografskih procesa. U petnaest godina radnog iskustva u grafičkoj industriji bavio se najvećim dijelom problemima reprodukcije fotografija u tisku, skeniranjem, obradom i pripremom za tisak, te je surađivao na raznim projektima najviše vezanim za PLIVU. Sustavima upravljanja bojom (Color Management) bavi se od samih začetaka istih prije desetak godina. Danas radi u tiskari Vjesnik u Kontroli kvalitete gdje se najviše pažnje posvećuje upravo reprodukciji fotografije u tisku.

LECTURER: Dean Žvorc (born in Zagreb, 1967) graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Arts in Zagreb at the Photographic Processes Program. During 15 years of work experience in the graphics industry he has mainly dealt with the problems relating to the reproduction of photos in the press, scanning, editing and preparation for press. He has also cooperated in various projects, mainly connected to Pliva. He has been dealing with Color Management since its beginning, about ten years ago. Today, he works in the Vjesnik printing-plant in Quality Control, where most attention is focused on the reproduction of photos in the press.

Patrick Hoelck nije svoju karijeru započeo kao fotograf te nerijetko ističe da je njegov uspjeh „sretna slučajnost“. Danas, ovog svjetski poznatog fotografa žele svi, a između portretiranja slavnih osoba, eksperimentiranja s erotskom fotografijom i različitih fotografskih i filmskih projekata Patrick pokušava zadržati osobni potpis po kojem je prepoznatljiv, a koji bismo mogli opisati kao kombinaciju umjetničke fotografije s visokom modom. U posljednje vrijeme primjenjuje dvije metode rada - onu s troje asistenata i samostalni rad sa subjektom. Podjednako voli obje. Patrick Hoelck did not start his career as a photographer and often states that his success was a “lucky coincidence“. Today, everyone is after this internationally famous photographer, and between photographing celebrities, experimenting with erotic photography and various photographic and film projects, Patrick is trying to retain his well known signature look, which we can describe as a combination of art photography with high fashion. Lately, he has been working in two methods, one with three assistants, and the other where he is alone with his subject. He likes both equally. Find out how he grew in his photographic career when he presents his work, after which there will be an open discussion with him.

Patrick Hoelck odrastao je između Kalifornije, New Yorka i Londona i njegov odgoj bio je sve osim tipičan. Važnije uspomene iz djetinjstva uglavnom se odnose na “usvojenje, strast, motore, kriminal i tučnjave”. Počeo se baviti fotografijom kasnije u svom životu kako bi upotpunio vrijeme dok je radio kao direktor glazbene i video produkcije. Početni proboj dogodio se kada je bliski prijatelj i umjetnik Vincent Gallo posebno zatražio Patricka, umjesto pokojnog Richard Avedona, za naslovnicu britanskog časopisa. Od tada su kampanje i uvodnici samo počeli stizati.

Patrick Hoelck was raised between California, New York and London, Patrick’s upbringing was everything but typical. Significant childhood memories consisted of mostly “adoption, lust, motorcycles, crime and fights”. He picked up photography later in life to pass the time while workaing as a music video director. An early break came when close friend and artist, Vincent Gallo, specially requested Patrick over the late Richard Avedon for a British magazine cover. Then the campaigns and editorials started rolling in.

Enrico Bossan se pridružio Fabrici 2005. godine kao voditelj odjela za fotografiju. U travnju 2007. postaje urednik časopisa COLORS. Njegove se fotografije redovito pojavljuju u međunarodnim časopisima od 1985, te su izlagane na PhotoFestu u Houstonu, Bienalu međunarodne fotografije u Torinu i Amsterdamu, Arlesu, Milanu, Rimu, Saloniki, Tokiju i Veneciji.

Enrico Bossan joined Fabrica in 2005 as the Head of the Photography department. In April 2007 he became the Editor of COLORS magazine. Since 1985, his photos have appeared regularly in international magazines and have been displayed at the Houston PhotoFest, the International Photography Biennale in Turin and in Amsterdam, Arles, Milan, Rome, Salonica, Tokyo and Venice.

Osvojio je nagradu Kodak za profesionalnu fotografiju 1987. godine. Njegova ranija izdanja uključuju Pechino-Parigi (1986.), putovanje od Azije do Europe, i Exit (1992.), priča o Americi iz dvaju kuteva, napravljeno u suradnji s fotografom Robertom Kochom. He won the Kodak award for professional photography in 1987. His earlier publications include Pechino-Parigi (1986), a journey from Asia to Europe and Exit (1992), a tale of America “from two angles”, produced in collaboration with the photographer Roberto Koch. In 2000 his books focused on healthcare and hospital life: Esodo, views of daily life in a shelter for AIDS victims and Un Privilegio Difficile, a black-and-white photo report for Cuamm Doctors With Africa on socio-medical co-operation in Sub-Saharan Africa. He has been represented by the Contrasto photo agency since 1992.

Roberto Ferri rođen je u Milanu, gdje i danas živi. Imao je 18 godina kada mu je ponuđen posao u foto-agenciji marka. Brzo se strastveno počeo baviti svojom novom aktivnošću da bi na koncu prekinuo studij kako bi svo svoje vrijeme posvetio fotografiji. Nakon rada za međunarodnu agenciju gamma, vratio se u agenciju marka u kojoj je najprije postao partner, a potom i njezin vlasnik.

Roberto Ferri was born in Milan where he continues to live. He was 18 when the photographic agency marka first offered him a job. He quickly developed a passion for his new activity and eventually gave up his studies in order to devote himself to it full time. After working with the international agency gamma he returned to marka where he became a partner and then owner.


In 2000 his was one of the the first Italian photographic agencies to enter the digital era when marka’s site made 5 million photographs available on line.

2009. godina predstavlja prekretnicu u turističkoj ponudi same destinacije, a jednako tako i kompanije. Otvorivši prvi hotel s pet zvjezdica u Rovinju - Monte Mulini, ekskluzivni boutique hotel prilagođen najvišim standardima luxury leisure publike čija je ukupna investicija iznosila oko 27 milijuna eura, Maistra d.d. je Rovinju i Hrvatskoj dala potpuno novu kvalitativnu dimenziju.

The year 2009 represents a turning-point in the tourist offer of the destination itself, as well as of the company. By opening the first 5-star hotel in Rovinj - the Monte Mulini, an exclusive boutique hotel adapted to the highest of standards of luxury leisure guests whose total investment amounted to 27 million Euros, Maistra d.d. gave to Rovinj and to Croatia a completely new quality dimension.

ORGANIZATOR ORGANIZATION Astoria d.o.o. je tvrtka koja je unutar svoje strukture podijeljena na četiri odjela: informatičku edukaciju, grafički i web dizajn, izdavaštvo i posebni projekti. Tek jedan od izdavačkih projekata tvrtke je magazin LivingStone koji je poznat po kvalitetnoj fotografiji te predstavljanju i promidžbi izvrsnih fotografa iz Hrvatske. Upravo je iz kvalitetne suradnje s brojnim hrvatskim fotografima kroz magazin Livingstone nastala ideja o Photodaysima kao stručnom natječaju, koji objedinjuje sva područja fotografije i tradicionalnom godišnjem skupu.

Astoria d.o.o. is a company which, within its structure, is divided into four basic activities: IT education, graphic and web design, publishing and special projects. Also, Astoria is the publisher of the LivingStone magazine that is known for its highquality photography and presentation and promotion of excellent photographers from Croatia. It was due to this good cooperation with numerous Croatian photographers through the LivingStone magazine that the idea of Photodays, as a professional competition that would unite all the areas of photography and be a traditional annual meeting, emerged.
